Cape Fur Seal Entanglements on the Rise

Adisturbing surge in Cape FurSeal entanglements along the Namibian coastline is shining a stark light on the escalating issue of plastic pollution in our ocean. According to Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN), a local non-profit dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating marine animals, the numbersofinjuredandtrappedsealsareincreasingandbreakingrecords.

“The Namibian coast is home to the largest population of Cape Fur Sealsintheworld, about 1.5 million,” Damian

Schreiber, Marine Conservation Communications, Field and Research Officer at OCN told the Namib Times. “But right now,

we are watching that incredible marine heritage suffer under the weight of our waste.”

Cape Fur Seals, known for their playful, curious nature, are becoming unwitting victims of marine debris, especially plastic. “The most prevalent sources of marine

The OCN team on seal rescue patrol at Pelican Point

litter in Namibia, according to the type of entanglement, are recreational fishing line, commercial fishing line and packaging straps, in that order,”saidSchreiber An estimated 60–80% of the debris these animals encounter is plastic. The OCN team has rescued

over 5 000 seals since 2013, with fishing lines andpackagingstrapstopping the list of entanglementcauses.

This year alone has already painted a troubling picture. By the end of July 2025, OCN had rescued 656 seals, making it the worst first seven months in any year todate.“Junewasalready unprecedented, 43 rescues in a single day, 199 in a month, ” said Schreiber “Then came July We hit 60 rescues in one day and 220 in one month. We didn't think those numbers were possible ” While the dedication and skill of OCN's team are commendable, refining rescuetechniquesovermore

than a decade, the spike in rescues isn't a sign of improvement. It's evidence that the problem is gettingworse.

“People sometimes think we'rejustgettingbetterat spotting and rescuing seals,” Schreiber explains, “but the reality is these entangled seals are the symptom of a much bigger disease ” The second quarter of 2025 confirmed an ongoing trend: more than 80% of rescued seals were less thanayearold.Sealpups are naturally inquisitive and playful traits that tragically increase their risk of getting caught in deadly debris. And the damage is not just external. “Over half of the seals we rescue already have visible injuries,” Schreiber said. “That's the cost of a single piece of plastic, pain, infection, andoften, slow death.” Despite the tireless efforts of the OCN team, patrolling places like Pelican Point,

responding to distress calls, and manually freeing animals often in difficult and dangerous conditions, the group knows that rescue alone is not the answer “Even if we stopped all plastic entering the oceans today, we'd still be left dealing with the millions oftonsalreadyoutthere,” Schreiber emphasised “We can't just keep cutting plastic off seals. We

need to cut plastic off at its source.” Ocean Conservation Namibia urges the public to adapt to better waste management, responsible fishing practices, and reducing plastic useindailylife.

“We are proud to do this work,” Schreiber said. “But we'd be far prouder to never have to rescue another seal again.”

Integrated Performing Arts exposes learners to the fundamentals of various artistic disciplines including music theory,

musical theatre, animation, mime, filmmaking, stand-up comedy, dance, and drama. Mrs Carol-Lee Peters, one of the leading IPA educators, alsoteachesthebasics of filmmaking. This empowers learners to become young storytellers and budding creators within thegrowingfilmandentertainment industry Both IPA teachers, Mrs Peters and Mr Peter, are seasoned performers. Mrs Peters is an award-winning actress, while Mr Peter has appeared in various films and stage productions, and is also a musician Their professional experience adds significant value to the classroom. As Mrs Petersexplains,“Thereare two components: first, the theoretical aspect, where we teach learners the different genres, such as how to read music in music theory Then, we move to the practical component, where learners are assessed on stage, showcasing what they've learned to a liveaudience.”

The annual IPA showcase is a highlight of the acade-

mic year It not only gives learners a platform to display their talents but also raises awareness of performing arts as a legitimate and enriching school subject. In the past, only teachers witnessed what learners created in class. Now, the showcase invites parents and the broader community to appreciate the students' hard work and creativity Weekly rehearsals take place every Thursday afternoon for two hours. In addition to theirdailyclasses, students remain after school for rehearsals.Whiletheprocess can be exhausting, Mrs Peters emphasises the learners' dedication: “They're tired, but they are truly committed because they know the end result is worth it. We teach them

multiple choreographies, some have lines to memoriseforroles, andothers must learn to play musical instruments such as the recorder, guitar, or piano.”The showcase is open to family members, the school community, and the wider Swakopmund public. This not only gives learners real performance experience but also provides affordable, highquality entertainment to the community Furthermore, proceeds from the event help raise funds for essential stage equipment and materials needed for learners'practicalexams. Participation in the showcase, including all rehearsals, is compulsory and contributes to the learners' final semester grade. The event gives learners real-

world insight into the full process of staging a production, from scriptwriting, casting, and rehearsals to stage and costume design, lighting and sound management, marketing, and backstage work. This year, the theme of the showcase was “Over the Moon”, a powerful narrative focusing on self-acceptance and individuality It explored the challenges teenagers face with insecurity, low self-esteem, and the pressure to conform, using theatre for development to educate and inspire throughperformance. Mrs Peters hopes more schools will recognise the immense value of Performing Arts as a subject and introduce it into their curriculums.Shenotesthat

IPA teachers are not only qualified but also experienced artists who are deeply passionate about passing on their knowledge. “Teaching these learnerstheskillswehave in the performing arts takes tremendous effort,” Mrs Peters said. “Staging a production involving about 60 learners is no small task. It involves directing, choreographing, costume and lighting design, and much more That's why Mr Peter and I would like to thank our immediate community, especially our learners, fellow teachers, and our leader, Mrs September, for their continued support.”

#ShowYourTribe Campaign Sparks Global Interest in Namibian Identity

A growing number of Namibians are proudly celebrating their tribal heritage through the viral #ShowYourTribe campaign, a photography and storytelling initiative launched by Polish photographer Janusz “Papa Janusz” Ballarin.

While the campaign draws from communities across the country, it also resonatesdeeplywithresidents in the Erongo region, where Himba families and others have made their homes, blending tradition withmodernlife.

Janusz Ballarin's journey began earlier this year

during visits to tribal villages across Namibia, including the northern Kunene Region and communities now living in Erongo. His experience with the Himba, Herero, Oshi-Wambo and other tribesinspiredhimtocreate a platform that amplifies Namibian voices and counters stereotypes through authentic representation. Many Himba families have migrated south over time, including to Erongo. Ballarin explained,“whileembracing modern lifestyles, these families carry their cultural roots with great pride. This blending of worlds is very real and very Namibian ” The #ShowYourTribe campaign invites Namibians to share portraits and stories expressing their tribal identity via Instagram, with winners receiving free professional portrait sessions in early 2026. The initiative has already attracted strong engagement, with almost 30 000 page views on the official website (www papaclicks africa) and heartfelt participation from various tribes, including many Herero women. The accompanying campaign anthem, Show Your Tribe, blends traditional African rhythms with modern beats, reflecting Ballarin's lifelong connection to music andtheemotionalpowerit holds in expressing identity The final jury panel for #ShowYourTribe includes Namibian ambassadors from various tribes and regions who champion cultural pride and unity across historical divides. SCHOOL

Uplifting Youths at Government Schools Through Sport

Devaranche Bedja, the founder of Devaranche Carter SportsAcademy is hard at work in the Erongo Region in his quest to embed sports directly into government schools and bydoingsobringthesportsculturebacktoschools.

According to Bedja the "A Kid with a Dream" project will be launching its first official school leagues on 16 August, featuring football, netball, rugby, and boxing at government schools. “The project aims to uplift young people by using sport not just as recreation, but as a transformative life tool. Each session blends physical training with mentorship, teaching young athletes goal setting, teamwork, and resilience,” said Bedja. He further explained that this initiative is not only about competition, but also about transformation Bedja's aim is to ensure that every child, regardless of his or her background, has access to structured play, mentorship, and the chancetodreambig. An emotional Bedja infor-

med Namib Times that this was his late son, Devaranche Carter Bedja's vision and final wish, forhimtoassistotherchildren like he helped him (late son) to achieve his goals. His late son was a keenfootballerandsportsman. Sports codes will be coached by trained mentors, with matches hosted across participating schoolsinSwakopmund.

“AKidwithaDream”currently operates in Swakopmundwithplanstoexpandintootherareas, with the project offering supporttoensurethatnochild is left behind. All government schools in the Swakopmund circuit are already on board. The upcoming leagues will feature football, netball, rugby and boxing to foster team-work, discipline, empowering of young girls through sport, building resilience and strength, teaching focus,

respect, and self-control. In a bold stride toward youth empowerment, the project merges athletic training with mentorship, helping children rise beyond circumstance and embrace ambition, according to Bedja. “Children are not only taught skills, but they're also taught to believe. “A Kid with a Dream” instils values of teamwork, commitment, and discipline in every drill, every cheer, every moment on the field,” he emphasised. Bedja plans toexpandtoothergovernment schools and eventually establish a regional traininghub. According to him educators, parents, and the youth are rallying behind the initiative. Young athletes speak of finding confidence and purpose, while teachers note improved discipline and engagement in the classroom. Devaranche Carter

Sports Academy invites local businesses, NGOs, and sports federations to partner in this movement. Sponsorships, volunteer coaching, andfacilitysupport will help sustain and grow the leagues. Bedja recently donated two new

football kits to Coastal High School for the sports league. “For many children, this will be their first taste of organised sport and perhaps the first step toward a lifelong dream. For Swakopmund and beyond, this isn't just about sport. It's about giving kids, regardless of their background a reason to believe in their future,” Bedjaconcluded.
