Major energy players are accelerating activity in the offshore Orange Basin. This week, French energy giant TotalEnergies confirmed it has entered formal discussions with the Namibian government to address fiscal terms tied to its landmark Venus oil project, while BW Energy and NAMCOR E&Pannounced plans to drill theKharasappraisalwellontheKudugasfield.
TotalEnergies' chief executive Patrick Pouyanne revealed during the company's second-quarter earnings call that the new government had formally invited the company to the table to negotiate project terms. “I received a letter asking us to engage in the discussion,” Pouyanne said, adding, “It's a new government and they're very willing to develop the oil industry.” Pouyanne met with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in Windhoek inApril to lay thefoundationforwhatmaybecomeNamibia'sfirst offshore oil development. The Venus field, located in Block 2913B in the ultra-deep waters of the OrangeBasin,liesapproximately290kilometresoff Namibia's southern coast, near the maritime border withSouthAfrica.Sittingatawaterdepthofabout3 000 metres,Venus is believed to hold up to 750 million barrels of recoverable oil, though technical challenges remain due to the reservoir's low permeability and the need to reinject large volumes of natural gas. TotalEnergies aims to bring Venus online through 40 subsea wells tied to a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, with
a processing capacity of 150 000 barrels of oil and 550 million cubic feet of gas per day In the meantime, BW Energy, together with NAMCOR E&P, is preparing to drill the Kharas appraisal well on the Kudu gas field, another cornerstone of Namibia's energy future. The Kudu field, located about130kilometresoffshorethesoutherncoastof Namibia, is part of Production Licence PPL003 in the Orange Basin. Drilling is scheduled for the second half of 2025 using the Deepsea Mira semisubmersible rig, a 6th-generation dynamically positioned/anchor-moored vessel capable of operatinginwaterdepthsofupto3000metres.Therig is owned by Northern Ocean and managed by Norwegian firm Odfjell Drilling, with the contract falling under a rig-sharing agreement with Rhino Resources. Youth Summit Ignites Namibia's Oil and Gas Future
· Young minds challenged to lead energy revolution at 2nd Youth in Oil & Gas Summit in Walvis Bay
Eileen van der Schyff
The2ndYouthinOilandGasSummit,heldattheWalvisBayTownHallunderthetheme“Drilling into the Future: Empowering Youth in Namibia's Oil and Gas Revolution”, brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and hundreds of ambitious young Namibians for a powerful twodayengagementaimedatturningdiscoveryintoopportunity.
Hon Kornelia Shilunga, Special Advisor
and Head of the
Upstream Petroleum Unit in the Office of the President, delivered the keynote address and emphasised that Namibia's oil and gas revolution must be inclusive, forward-thinking, and youth-driven.
“This platform is more thanaconference, itisa gathering of possibility,” said Shilunga.
“Our strategy is not only focused on resource extraction, but also on skills extraction. Your generation must lead with knowledge, integrity and urgency.”

Namibia's energy outlook has significantly shifted since the first discoveries in the Orange Basin in 2022. By 2024, the country had seen 28 offshore and 10 onshore wells drilled, placing it firmly on the global energy map with an estimated 11 billion barrels of oil and 2.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas

Shilunga reaffirmed the government's commitment under the 8th Administrationtorevise outdated petroleum laws, establish a new logistics and supply base, and reach ambitious NDP6 targets: producing 150 million
barrels of oil equivalent andcreating22800new jobs by 2030, 15% of which must be filled by local and youth-driven enterprises.
Erongo Governor Natalia /Goagoses echoed the call for youth integration in national

development and urged stronger collaboration between industry and educationalinstitutions.
“You are not waiting to lead one day You are leaders today,” said /Goagoses “This is about building skills, creating jobs, and preparing the next generation to lead. Local content must include youthcontent.”
According to the 2023 NSA census, youth account for 71.1% of Namibia's population, a statistic that summit organisershavetakento heart. Founder of the Youth in Oil and Gas Summit, Ms Justina Erastus, reflected on how far the movement has come. “Last year, we gathered as curious minds with a shared dream. Today, we stand asacommunityreadyto transform Namibia's energyfuture,”shesaid. Erastus emphasised action over lip service, highlighting that all service providers at the summit, from media and catering to staging and branding, were owned and operated by young Namibians
“Enough with the social media click-bait posts. Let's start hiring and training these graduates with zero experience.”
The event also celebrated strong partnerships Sponsors included Walvis Bay Diving and Salvage (Diamond Sponsor), Chevron, Petrofund, NAMCOR, FNB Namibia, RMB, MTC Namibia, and many others Erastus called on youth to seize the full spectrum of opportunities, not just in engineering and exploration, but across the entire oil and gas value chain, from logistics and environmental management to creative services and communications.
“Thereisroomforevery passion, every skill, and everydream.Usewhat's in your hands. Because that is where the blessingbegins,”shesaid.
