Yesterday, 130 years ago, the town of Swakopmund came to life, the Swakopmund Municipality is hosting various funfilled activities during this month to celebrate the 130th anniversary of Swakopmund with its residents. Yesterday, 4 August, the 130th-anniversary celebrations themed “Swakopmund, shining since 1892” kicked off with an official opening ceremony at the Swakopmund Amphitheatre where the Governor of Erongo region Neville Andre Itope, Mayor of Swakopmund Louisa Kativa, Mayor of Karibib Davey Van Wyk, Swakopmund Municipality's Chief Executive Officer Alfeus Archie Benjamin, Regional and Local Authority Councillors and members of the community graced the event by cutting and sharing a cake. During his keynote address, Itope said, “Somebody was saying Swakopmund is the cleanest town in Namibia, indeed it is, it is because of who we are as people of Swakopmund. Dad saves daughters from blaze

Karl Stefanus Blaauw' (50), father of the 12 and 15-year-old girls caught in a blaze after their home caught fire earlier this week, told the Namib Times about the nightmare that unfolded in front of him. Both of Blaauw's daughters were severely burnt after the shack they were living in caught fire just after 11:00 on Monday evening. Erongo police, at the time, confirmed the condition of the two girls were serious and that they were first transported to Walvis Bay state hospital, from where they were transported to the Windhoek state hospital on Tuesday. The ambulance of the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) transported the two girls accompanied by their mother. The condition of the 15-year-old girl was reported as critical on Wednesday. She is currently under sedation in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with 40 percent third degree burns. The 12-year-old sustained 20 percent third degree burn wounds.
