National Council rejects proposed amendment of Local Authorities Act The Local Authorities Amendment Bill of 2015 was Wednesday rejected by the National Council (NC), responsible for reviewing proposed legislation before it is sent back to the National Assembly (NA) and Cabinet, and possibly signed into law by the head of state when all bodies are satisfied. Members of the NC strongly opposed the Bill that was tabled in the NA during November 2015 and referred for discussion.

NC members found the amendments of the Bill to centralise powers and create a system of bureaucracy, while the Namibian Government

has a goal to decentralise powers and accelerate development. Deputy Minister of VeContinues on Page 2

Ekango Salt employees to re-apply for their jobs in sweeping restructuring process

Education - Parents should be involved

Floris Steenkamp Ekango Salt Refiners, the producer and exporter of top-grade Namibian table salt in Walvis Bay, confirmed yesterday a restructuring of its work force, in lieu of expectations to raise current production output of 4 500 tons of table salt per month to 6 000 tons per month.

Managing Director André Snyman admits to salary cuts and possible separation packages

Additionally, Ekango Salt Refiners through its holdings company, CAH Holdings, has recently acquired the well-known, top-grade South African table salt trade mark Cerebos. The intended restructuring also has much to do with accommodating the Cerebos trade mark at the Ekango

production facility at Wa l v i s B a y S a l t Refiners. Ekango Salt Refiners is a subsidiary of Walvis Bay Salt Holdings which is in turn owned by Chlor & Alkali Holdings (CAH) which in actual fact in turn acquired the Cerebos trade mark. Upon inquiries yester-

day afternoon, the Managing Director of Walvis Bay Salt Holdings, Mr André Snyman, set the record straight over the financial viability of Ekango Salt Refiners. Snyman rejected all rumours that the restructuring is to counter a financial loss of Continues on page 2

National Council Continued from Page 1 terans Affairs, Hilma Nikanor, who also objected to the Bill, said the power local authorities are entitled to cannot be taken to central government, as this will render them toothless and in the end result in them being ineffective in their service delivery. This, she said, was with reference to the amended provisions of the Bill that the appointment of a chief executive officer (CEO) will be done by the management committee of the local authority, but the line minister should solicit approval. Chief Whip of the NC, Lebbius Tobias also noted that majority local authorities that participated in the public hearing on the Amendment Bill last week Friday, indicated that they were not consulted on the contents of the Bill and thus could not make valid contributions to the discussion. Other issues raised on the amendments of the Bill were powers of local authority councils and restrictions on the sale of immovable property and alienation thereof. The Amendment Bill will be referred back to the NA with the amendments for reconsideration. The NC will resume on 11 February 2016. NAMPA

Demasius Continued from Page 1 engineer of the Swakopmund municipality in 1992, and was then appointed Chief Executive Officer. Demasius is known as an old-school public administrator and tonguein-the-cheek always insisted to be known by the title of Town Clerk and not as the Chief Executive Officer. In the corridors of the Swakopmund municipality there was much debate this week over Demasius' immediate future. There are those who supported the decision and saw no other path than for Demasius to part with the Swakopmund Municipality at day-end 9 May. The majority consulted though felt he still has much to give at the age of 62 to the town's administration, and was supporting the alternative of Demasius assuming the position as the interim-Chief Executive Officer. “At least till we have clarity on the possible amendments to the Local Authorities Act”, said a municipal official yesterday on condition of anonymity and quite unaware of the uncertainty with such amendment bill after the National Council earlier this week rejected the amendment bill. In this particular event the amendment bill, if passed by Parliament and signed into law, would have given the sole authority of appointing local authority CEO's to the Minister of Urban and Rural Development. Now this decision is still vested in local authority councils. Demasius could not be reached for comment yesterday, as he is out of office on a visit to Namibia's South.

ICT has transformed the way Customs and Government work The Directorate of Customs and Excise in the Ministry of Finance says the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) will be a massive contributor to the success of customs organisations' services. A statement issued by the directorate on Tuesday during International Customs Day said this year's theme 'Digital Customs: Progressive Engagement' focuses on the directorate's dedication to the promotion and use of ICT to collect and safeguard customs duties. It said the utilisation of ICT equally contributes to the facilitation of the seamless flow of goods, people, conveyances and money to secure cross-border trade free of crime and terrorism. The Director of Customs and Excise, Commissioner Bevan Simataa (pictured) was quoted in the statement as saying ICT has become embedded and profoundly vital in customs and excise operations. “ICT has transformed the way customs and Government operate - from the use of ICT in office automation, Internet and the dissemination of information, to making declarations or clearing systems,” he said. He added that the directorate is making a bold statement as a customs community by further developing digital integration in order to simplify trading. “This will help to increase operational performance and to facilitate the reintervention and innovation of the way we do

With its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, the WCO's primary objective is to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of member states' customs administration. The WCO is internationally acknowledged as the global centre of customs expertise and plays a leading role in the discussion, development, promotion and implementation of modern customs systems and procedures. “The technology landscape is changing rapidly, with a number of key trends emerging such as cloud computing, mobile technologies, advanced analytics and information management, and each of these technologies affects our role of customs in different ways, and provides numerous opportunities to drive connectivity,” Simataa said. Death notice scam - Payment dispute renders FNB issues warning building project incomplete “Fraudsters continue to target mourning Namibians to scam them out of their money. FNB Namibia once again wishes to alert the public to increasing death notice scams especially targeting grieving family members who have placed death notice or tombstone unveilings in the local newspapers.” Rodney Forbes, Area Manager, Far North Area Office, FNB Namibia, says a family member of his recently almost fell victim to these convincing and conniving fraudsters. “Luckily I was around and could prevent this from happening by educating and advising the family member targeted,” he says. Vicky Muranda, Manager of Corporate Communications at the FNB Group adds: “We warned the public about this in April and July last year and still it continues and it saddens us that innocent people continue to lose money because of this.” Muranda explains the scam: “People who have lost their loved ones will receive a call from a person introducing him/herself to be an employee of a bank. The person would advise that the deceased had a policy with the bank and that he/she is the beneficiary to the policy. The fraudster would then ask for banking details of the beneficiary and identity details apparently for the deposit of the benefit. This is in actual fact just a trick and the person will call back after a while telling them that in order to hasten the payout of the claim, the customer needs to deposit a certain amount to a given account and or e-wallet, for funds to be cleared. This is not an approved bank process and always a scam.” Muranda warns that the most important aspect people need to keep in mind is the fact that FNB would never ask customers to send the bank money via eWallet. “Never take it at face value that a caller works for the bank. Either immediately end the conversation or take down the details of the caller, and get the bank to verify these details. Never share your own details. If it sounds too good to be true – it usually is. If you have suddenly inherited millions, but the caller needs your bank details and more for any transfer – do not react. If you are asked for a deposit in order to receive funds you are not aware of – chances are this is a scam. Remain alert and vigilant at all times. Suspected fraudulent activity can be reported to 061 299 2222/2101.” Muranda further gave a tips which customers should always remember so that they are protected: · The Bank and/or any other Insurance company would never call on a claimant and ask for a payment to clear funds. · The Bank or any other Insurance Company would never ask for payment to be affected viae e-wallet for any type of payment. · Always insist on company account details which you can verify with the Bank for legitimacy. · Never make a payment to receive your just dues, such as insurance benefits. · Ask for actual policy number and do a direct follow-up with that specific company.

In February last year, Günter Garbade signed a seven month contract with MJ Boucher Builder, owned by Mathew Boucher, to build and furnish his house on Erf 5643, Kramersdorf. MJ Boucher Builder, however never completed building or furnishing the house and left without completing the work. According to Garbade, the dispute started when Boucher returned back from leave and was requesting more money for work not completed. “The agreement on the payment terms was that I pay him in phases, he was supposed to complete a certain area before I could pay him,” said Garbade. According to Garbade, he paid Boucher a certain percentage of the money and asked him to complete his work before he could pay him the rest of the money, “but he was already packing up and with the quotation which requested for more money, there was a letter from his lawyer which said that if I have a problem with the quotation I should contact the lawyers,” added Garbade. To this day, Garbade's house remains incomplete, the roof topping is cracking and “it is only 1.5 cm thick while it is supposed to be six, I have called a couple of building inspectors to look at Boucher's work, and they all said the work on the floor and the roof topping should be redone,” stated Garbade. “I have paid him what he wanted, because I do not want this issue to go to court as my house will be delayed,

but I want him to refund me for all the work which need to be redone and for all the money I paid in advance,” said Garbade. Garbade wants to make it public that a person who deliver such bad work should not be allowed to work on people's houses. What hurts him more is that he was given a list of sub-contractors to choose from, by an engineer who have to decide if Boucher was wrong or not, but most of these sub-contractors are not having all the skills required to complete the whole house and to build the boundary wall and he was told to consult Boucher should he need another subcontractor. “I wrote a letter a few weeks ago to request a contractor but Boucher replied saying I should only use the ones on the list,” said Garbade. When reached for comment, Mr Boucher referred namib times to his lawyer, who was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press. namib times also contacted Andre Ruch, the engineer who is to make the ruling and he said he is just waiting for the results of the topping before he can make any ruling. Parents should be more involved Sharlien Tjambari During the Stakeholders meeting which is took place at Swakopmund Primary School, the Governor of Erongo Region, Mr Cleophas Mutjavikua said the parents should participate more in their children's school work. Parents should attend more parent meetings and be active in their children's participation in school. “Parents expect to see better results while they do not participate in the work of their children” Mutjavikua emphasised. Mutjavikua said when he visited the Kavango East Region he was surprised to see how teachers are passionate about teaching, they even teach till three of four in the afternoon and every time the results come out, they do not stress because they know they prepared their learners well, “teachers who run home early and who are not passionate about teaching are the main cause of failure in our schools,” said Mutjavikua. “A teacher is just a teacher, they must enjoy teaching and go an extra mile to fulfil their duties as teachers,” said Mutjavikua. According to Mutjavikua, another reason why learners are failing is the mobile phone. He said cell phones are disruptive and warned that the day will come when he will stop school learners from carrying cell phones.

Kuisebmond residents particularly concerned about littering and hygiene Liesl Losper The past week we have received numerous phone calls from residents that are shocked about the state of the town, specifically Kuisebmond, as a result of littering. Residents raised similar concerns where they said black bags filled with litter were left unfetched just north of Long Beach where it is now torn apart by scavenger animals and the wind and would soon again result in littering of the beach area in the immediate vicinity. One of Kuisebmonds concerned residents, Erastus Nkevali, said to the namib times: “We all know that a clean town attracts visitors and investors but look at how Walvis Bay has become specifically Kuisebmond. I am not just putting

the blame on the town's administration, but also on residents who are not doing anything to prevent the increasing litter that is heaped up at almost every corner of town. People throw things anywhere, they dump the waste everywhere and it's uncalled for”. Some residents said they dumped garbage on the streets because their dustbins are full because of non-collection by the municipality. Littering is also one of the aspects that the mayor has mentioned in his first council meeting speech, that we need to keep close attention to. “It starts at the most

basic level, such as removing election posters immediately after their relevance has come to an end, or being friendly and helpful when someone needs municipal services, or looking after public infrastructure and not littering at all. If we can manage the basics, the rest will follow more easily. Let us continue to be proud of what we have, and cling steadfastly to our good reputation” he said. With this said, it is clear that the municipality and the community have the same concern and it will be dealt with by the municipality” the mayor said.

Residents, business and sport join hands to clean fish-mess Anglers left the fish cleaning facility at the Walvis Bay lagoon in such a mess in recent weeks, residents of the lagoon suburb, a local business and the Rock & Surf Angling Association decided to intervene to clean the area.”

“Visitors frequent the lagoon walkway daily. I am ashamed over this dirty facility, not to talk about the smell”, said Danie du Toit recently whom together with an employee of him, Mr John Kauta (above right), went to clean the facility. Oliver Nederlof It is so sad when people behave like this. We are all human beings, it does not matter what the colour our skin is. We are just different and the difference is what makes us so special. We were all created in God's image. He made us so special that no one looks like the same and that is a good thing. We are all different with different talents and looks but we are all human beings. There is no need and absolutely no reason for such discrimination. Teaching methods blamed for poor Gr10 and 12 results Teachers and schools were urged on Friday to change their teaching methods to uplift the performance of Grade 10 and 12's. Schalken Monika Van Heerden So...it's only the teachers' fault? Parents are not at all responsible for the academic success of their children? Only teachers must discipline the unruly children? I have seen and am working daily with the curriculum for Gr1-3 learners. Although it is admirable what should be taught at this level, it is simply too much for a teacher to teach the kids, make sure that they practice it, teach them basic manners and discipline and generally be parents to 40+ kids in a class. Yes sure teachers should make sure that the kids understand. But please do not underestimate the impact that repetition at home and actually doing the homework has! No teacher can function without support from the learners' parents. So please do not blame the teachers alone. Many are doing their best in difficult circumstances (overcrowding of classrooms, discipline issues etc). Yes every teacher can learn new ways of teaching and new ideas are always good. But make sure that parents are involved in their kids' lives and I am sure that the marks will improve! Franklin Feris Amen to the last part of that story. Uakutura Tjikusere Very well said indeed Mr /Awaseb! Principals and teachers must take note and act accordingly.

Walvis Bay town council kicks off 2016 Liesl Losper The first council meeting of the Walvis Bay Town Council for 2016 was held on Tuesday night at Council Chambers at the Civic Centre. It was here that newly elected mayor Immanuel Wilfred made the wake-up call to newly elected councilors that 2016 will be coloured not only with Namibia's domestic challenges but also global challenges that will impact the town and its residents. Clr Wilfred made use of the opportunity to welcome all councilors, following their swearing in late in 2015 after the local authority elections. “I would like to thank the political parties for their selection of representatives on the local authority council. In my opinion, this is a team that can propel this town forward in the right direction,” he said. The mayor said despite having to deal with the town's own problems locally, such as overcoming the brutal effects of the drought that could impact food prices, globally there seems to be little to cheer about as most economies will experience little or no growth. There are also other challenges like the exchange rate and concerns of interest rate hikes. The mayor appealed strongly to cut down on expenditure wherever possible and not to engage in unnecessary debt. “We need to adopt a culture of saving, also on a personal level. However, if the recent rains are anything to go by, we will

remain optimistic that every cloud has a silver lining.” He further continued and said that Walvis Bay has not declined and they are delighted with the number of capital projects currently being undertaken, and those in the pipeline. “We may not be the best at everything we do, or have the best of everything we offer, but we are quite comfortable in acknowledging that we are eager to learn from the best locally and abroad. But I do believe that we offer the best possible allround package to residents, visitors and investors alike, and we are determined to improve all the time. In order to maintain that kind of success, we need support at every possible level.” He urged local authority councillors, municipal administration and the community that it is crucial that they must work together, constantly. “May all our efforts reflect that we have the best interests of our city and all its inhabitants at heart.”

Junior Council’s year already gaining momentum..... Liesl Losper

The Walvis Bay Junior Council alongside Miss Teen 2015, Lythia Yon, recently had a beach clean-up project in which they filled numerous garbage bags along Longbeach. This is the Junior Council's first environmental project for the year and the aim was primarily to raise awareness amongst the youth to always conserve Walvis Bay's natural form. “My aim for taking on this project was to ensure that residents of Walvis Bay understand the magnitude of always keeping our beaches clean, as well as to inspire the youth to take the initiative and protect our land for many generations to come,” said Junior Mayor Laura van Reenen.

The Junior Mayor during a council meeting applauded the new Junior Council for the initiative. “I am applauding our new Junior Council for taking the lead in their recent cleanup campaign when they tackled a kilometre-long stretch of the beach north of Langstrand. Although that particular area falls under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, our young citizens should be commended for a job well done by collecting about 80 bags of rubbish left behind by irresponsible holidaymakers.”

Five Reasons Food Tastes Better The Ocean Cellar Guide to Red Wines! Near the Sea Your friend asks you what wine you would like, a Cinsault or a The Strand Hotel Swakopmund will house three full service restaurants open seven days a week, plus an ice cream parlor and another small Café. The Brewer and Butcher will brew its own beer on site, while the Farmhouse Deli will serve fresh from local farms. The Ocean Cellar is the Strand's most refined establishment, offering fresh seafood and a fine selection of South African wines. And all of these establishments will have magnificent views of the sea. Swakopmunders will tell you that food tastes better near the sea. Let's face it: this is clearly a biased opinion (shared by this writer from Swakopmund). But is there any truth to this claim? In fact, science does support this argument in some important ways, both physical and psychological. 1. Salt water Things taste better near the sea simply because it is near salt water. The argument here is that the sense of smell and sense of taste are closely related. Borrowing from a LiveScience.com article from August of 2008, "The

sensation of flavor is actually a combination of taste and smell," said Tom Finger, a professor at the University of Colorado-Denver Medical School. "If you hold your nose and start chewing a jelly bean, taste is limited, but open your nose midway through chewing and then you suddenly recognise apple or watermelon." Therefore, the smell of miniscule water droplets in the air will affect your sense of taste. If you enjoy the scent of the ocean, it will enhance your enjoyment of your food. 2. Fresh air Going back to the same argument, that your sense of smell affects flavour as much as your sense of taste, the fresh air near the sea will also improve the flavour of your food. 3. Sea Salt One way to bring the sea with you to enhance the flavour of your food, no matter where you live, is to buy sea salt. But is sea salt any different than

normal table salt? Claire Harrison of foodeducate.com looked into this question. The answer, in short, is yes, but not that much. The key is that salt is simply the chemical compound Pottasium Chloride, or NaCl. In both table salt and sea salt, the concentration of NaCl is about 85%, with the other 15% composed of other minerals found in the sea. And this is the kicker, all salt is actually sea salt! It is just that sea salt is fresher, extracted from today's current oceans. Mined salt (used for common table salt), is from the remnant deposits of salt from ancient salt lakes. Both types of salt must go through some purification process. The difference is that sea salt retains trace elements only found in salt water. So there is a difference, but not as much as is advertised by sea salt manufacturers. It does, however, really bring the sea to your table, even if it is only in a small way. 4. Environment According to a Popular Science article in March of 2014, there are many other factors affecting flavour besides taste and smell! Environment is one of them. “People

were asked to describe the qualities of the same Scotch whisky in three rooms themed as grassy, sweet, or woody. (For example, the first room smelled of grass and played recordings of bleating sheep.) They largely responded with 'grassy,' 'sweet,' or 'woody,' respectively.” Even if it is only psychological, this would imply that the proximity to the ocean would enhance that sea air experience and improve the flavour of your food. 5. Memory According to the same Popular Science article, memory is important, too, “Recalling a positive memory about eating vegetables will make a present experience with them more enjoyable (and you'll take a bigger portion too).” This is perhaps the most important reason food tastes better near the sea. If you enjoy the sea, and associate your meal with the enjoyable memory of the setting, you will remember the meal as all the more enjoyable. Savignon Blanc. You nod your head wisely, as if in contemplation, but in reality you are not considering your choices, you are simply considering how best to answer without exposing your ignorance. You skew and eyebrow for effect, and confidently suggest the Cinsault Blanc, which is a blend which does not exist! While none of us really want to take the time and effort to become a sommelier, the following article is a handy reference to keep you in the conversation about red wines. The Ocean Cellar is one of three full service restaurants to occupy the ground floor of the new Strand Hotel Swakopmund. It will offer first class seafood and first class wine. The wine selection will be broad, but will focus on South African vintages. South African wine has been a competitor in the global markets for decades now. Just this year the Cape Winelands claimed 8 global and forty-three regional awards in the 2014 Best of Wine Tourism awards. Here is guide to red wine varietals found in the Cape, according to the Wines of South Africa Export Council. · Cabernet Franc Related to Cabernet Sauvignon, this variety is usually softer, has a lower sugar content and contains less alcohol. Used as a component in classic, Bordeaux-stye blends but also for varietal wines. Small but increasing vineyard area. Unless specified, ‘Cabernet' refers to the Sauvignon and not the Franc variety. · Cabernet Sauvignon An increasingly significant variety at the Cape, it's the foremost variety of te Bordeaux region of France. Cabernet Sauvignon produces topclass wines that develop well with age into spicy, full, complex wines. As in Bordeaux, it may be blended with Merlot or its relative, Cabernet Franc. · Carignan Flourishes well in warm, dry aras. Originated in Spain, also widely planted in the south of France and grown in North Africa. Insignificant plantings in South Africa. Produces a light dry wine or is used as a blending component, particularly in Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz. · Cinsaut Previously known as Hermitage. A strong bearer and very versatile variety it can be used to blend with Cabernet, to produce reasonably priced early drinking wines, or as quality wine for brandy distilling. It is also often used for ros port-style and repigo wines. Once South Africa's most widely planted red variety, vineyard area has decreased as it has been replaced by more noble varieties. · Gamay (Noir) Mainly light red wines in the nouveau style are made of this grape in France's Beaujolais regio. Several reds are made locally in a similar early drinking style. · Grenache (Noir) One of Spain's most important varieties where it' known as Garnacha, this hardy grape is resistant to drought, wind and sun. Typically used for blending with Shiraz, Merot and Cabernet Sauvignon. · Malbec Once a significant component of Bordeaux' blend but no longer found in the region' best vineyards, this spicy variety is now mainly grown in Cahors in western France where it' known as 'Cot' Argentina' signature vriety, it' also grown in Chile. Very small plantings in SA, varietal and blended bottlings. · Merlot An early ripening variety, traditionally used as a blending partner to add softness and breadth to Cabernet Sauvignon but now increasingly being bottledas a varietal wine, with some superb results locally. Planted in increasing quantities, particularly in the Stellenbosch and Paarl regions. · Mourvre Originated from Spain, where it's known as Monastrell (in California and Australia it's known as Matar). The spicy notes make it a good blending partner with cultivars like Shiraz. Small vineyard area locally. · Muscadel This variety produces a very popular sweet red wine, particularly in the Little Karoo. Miniscule plantings in South Africa. · Nebbiolo Big, tannic wines with lengthy ageing potential are made from this grape in its home terroir of Piedmont in Italy. Tiny plantings here. · etit Verdot This superb variety is used in small percentages in Bordeaux-style blends and can also be made into culivar wines. Limited plantings locally. · Pinot Noir The king of Burgundy but notoriously difficult to grow elsewhere. Although not yet widely planted, this variety is now producing excellent wines in the cooler viticultural areas of South Africa. Wines tnd to be lighter in colour with distinct vegetal flavours and aromas. A large proportion is used in Cap Classique sparkling wines. · Pinotage A local cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (Hermitage), created by Professor Abraham Perold in 1925, this variety combines the noble characteristics of the former with the reliability of the latter. Unique to South Africa, it can produce complex and uity wines with age but is also often very drinkable when young. With great strides made in the making of Pinotage, South Africa' own variety is rapidly gaining increasing acceptance and finding favour worldwide both as a varietal bottling and in blends. The 'ape blend'is an evolving term which generally denotes a red blend with Pinotage as a component making up 30 to 70 percent of the wine. Download the Pinotage Aroma Wheel ere · Roobernet A 1960s local cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Pontac, it has an unusual (for reds) grssy character. Withstands diseases particularly well. Can be made into a cultivar wine, also a good blending partner, particularly in combination with Pinotage for a uniquely South African blend. · Ruby Cabernet A Californian cross between Carignan and Cbernet Sauvignon, this prolific producer is suited to warmer areas. · Shiraz A noble variety of French origin. Better known as Syrah elsewhere, the largest production of Shiraz is now found in Australia but local plantings have increased strongly. Made i several different styles here, it yields deep purple smoky and spicy wines which develop a complex character with age. · Souzào Originally from Portugal, this is one of the traditional port varieties. Its high fruit sugar content and strongly pigmented kin give taste and colour. · Tinta Barocca Considered one of the best varieties for the production of port-style wines in South Africa. It produces earthy, organic red wines and is excellent for blending. · Touriga Nacional Regarded as the best variety for port, it's one of the oldest cultivars in the Douro area of Portugal. Produces varietal wines with a very dark colour and a strong ripe berry character with around 13% alcohol. · Zinfandel This leading Californian grapevariety (the same as Italy' Primitivo) is planted on a limited scale in South Africa.

The oceans their classroom

The port of Walvis Bay hosted the Dutsch sailing ship Gulden Leeuw this week, which called at port to take in supplies and to conduct repairs.

This ship is not only unique due to the fact this was an ordinary ship transformed into a tall sailing ship, but also the fact there are students of more than ten countries aboard that carry on with their school studies but at the same time learning boatmanship and learning from other cultures and the places they visit. It is therefore not far - fetched to call Gulden Leeuw a floating classroom. The sixty students aboard have been sent by their parents and caretakers on this eight months sailing adventure. Their school programmes are not interrupted, as they continue to receive school tutoring aboard, but at the same time learn the qualities of life like hard work, discipline to carry out tasks timely and learning from other cultures and from the ways things are done at the many ports and harbours they dock. Gulden Leeuw has a permanent crew apart from the students aboard. namib times spoke to the captain, Arjen Töller who explained the journey of eight months started in Amsterdam in the Netherlands and ends there again by August this year. By this time the ship would have crossed the Atlantic several times and the southernmost port is that of Cape Town. Töller is proud of his crew of students and says in the beginning most find the daily chores aboard a sailing ship crossing the oceans very difficult. It is a life of getting up early, often woken at night for a shift as helmsman and of course the never-ending cycle of preparing food, cleaning and deck chores. The most difficult for many is to climb the ship’s tall masts as part of the rigging work. “We make sailors out of students”, explained Töller. Hinting that life is a sailing boat crossing the oceans. There are things that needs to be done every day, over and over and whether these tasks are small or big, deemed important or not, it is needed to keep the sailing boat safe, on course and liveable.

"The all-new Honda Civic Type R is the most extreme and highest performing Type R ever built, and sets new standards in the fiercely contested high-performance front-wheel drive hatchback segment," says Graham Eagle, director of operations at Honda Motor Southern Africa. "Boasting an all-new forced-induction VTEC Turbo engine, advanced new suspension systems and purposeful styling that delivers the visual excitement expected of a Type R while enhancing performance and stability, the new Civic Type R sets new benchmarks for power delivery, handling dynamics and overall driving thrills," he added. This exhilarating new model signals the start of a new performance era for Honda, drawing on the brand's racing DNA to occupy the top position in the Honda Civic line-up. "Part of a wave of next-generation, all-new Honda vehicles, the new Civic Type R demonstrates the brand's pioneering approach to technological innovation which makes life better for its customers," Eagle concluded. Inspired by the Japanese word 'buttigiri', which translated means 'to break through and leave the rest behind', Honda's engineers sought to develop a Type R that would more than live up to the high expectations associated with the red badge. The new Civic Type R has been engineered to deliver a dynamic, class-leading performance regardless of whether it's being driven on fast roads, through a twisty mountain pass, or on a racing circuit. At the same time, it remains true to the ease of use and practical packaging expected of a Civic. The new Type R combines a world-first application of Honda's new VTEC Turbo engine with a sensuous sporting sound, to aggressive func-tion-led styling and pioneering new chassis technologies. The result is a profound driving machine: a super hatch equally at home on the road as it is on the track, at the push of a button. Offered as a full-specification five-door model, the Civic Type R is set to catapult Honda back to the top of the two-wheel drive performance hatchback league. Tested for success: lap record around the legendary N端rburgring Nordschleife As part of a rigorous and detailed development and testing programme, a pre-production development Honda Civic Type R achieved a lap time of 7 min 50,63 sec around the legendary 20,8 km N端rburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany. This time is unmatched by any other front-wheel drive performance hatchback. The lap time was achieved during the final phase of pre-production testing in May 2014 by a Civic Type R development car in a standard state of engine tune, with suspension, drivetrain, ex-haust, brakes and the aerodynamic package identical to those of the production Civic Type R. The removal of equipment such as air conditioning, the front passenger seat and audio equip-ment offset the additional weight of a full roll cage (installed specifically for safety reasons, and not to add rigidity). During the test cycle, the development car used production-specification high-rigidity 19-inch alloy wheels. These were fitted with the 235/35 R19 Continental SportContact 6 road tyres developed specifically for the new Civic Type R. The Type R has since become the first production vehicle to be fitted with the new Continental SportContact 6 as original equipment.

The Opel GT Concept: This is How Sportscars Will Look in Future The Opel GT Concept will celebrate its world premiere at the 86th Geneva International Motor Show (March 3 to 13). This trendsetting sportscar expresses the continuous innovative strength of Opel - breathtaking in its shape, reduced to the bare essentials, pure passion. The thoroughbred athlete with a front mid-engine and rear-wheel drive is a direct descendant of the Opel GT and the Monza Concept and takes Opel's sculptural design philosophy to the next level. The sportscar is avant-garde yet puristic, renounces everything that disturbs the pure form. The GT Concept has no door handles or exterior door mirrors. In the best tradition: GT Concept continues philosophy of Opel Experimental GT The Opel GT Concept will follow in the footsteps of the famous Opel Experimental GT at the Geneva Motor Show. In 1965, only one year after the foundation of the first design studio run by a European car manufacturer, Opel presented this sleek and expressive coupé with the reliable technology of the Kadett B at the Frankfurt Motor Show. However, it was not just innovative because it was the first concept car ever presented by a European manufacturer. The GT already shone with innovations such as retracting headlamps and displayed a slim form along with perfect proportions without unnecessary decoration. The uncompromising concept by Erhard Schnell mainly wanted to be one thing - a design statement. The reactions from the public were so overwhelming that the series production Opel GT was at dealerships only three years later. The rest is history - a success story, an automotive icon. The GT Concept once again showcases Opel's pioneering spirit. A dynamic driving machine something that is already symbolized by the red signature line that splits the vehicle body horizontally and proportions it. The distinctive red front tires - mounted on rims with a cheeky roller skates design - are reminiscent of the Opel motorbike Motoclub 500 that was also avant-garde at its time and was the proud owner of two red tires in 1928. Apart from that, the GT Concept does not have many links to the past. The long bonnet, the absence of a trunk lid, the central dual exhaust and of course, the name all refer to the original GT. Apart from that the Opel GT Concept is independent with no sign of retro-design. "We created the GT Concept to capture the bold, emotional spirit of the Opel brand. It is dramatic, sculptural and full of innovations, which is our great tradition that we intend to continue. Back in 1965, Opel developed the Experimental GT, a thoroughly modern vehicle that also boasted a pure sculptural shape. It's certainly difficult to reinvent an icon but just as the Experimental GT was avant-garde back then, so too is this GT Concept today - absolutely pure, minimalistic, yet bold and uncompromising. This coupé impressively demonstrates the continuous development of our Design philosophy - 'Sculptural Artistry meets German precision'," said Mark Adams, Vice President, Design Europe. A key innovation of the Opel GT Concept are the large doors with the integrated side windows that show a seamless transition from glass to painted surfaces. Both the driver and the front passenger gain access to the unexpectedly spacious interior after pressing the touchpad for the electric doors that is integrated in the red signature line of the roof. Even tall drivers have enough room inside. The doors immerse considerably into the front wheel arches when opened. This space-saving and patented mounting allows a large opening angle - particularly in relatively tight parking spaces. The compact athlete is therefore optimised especially for urban areas. Two cameras mounted behind the wheel arches ensure a safe overview while driving in the city. They transmit their images to two monitors on the left and right-hand side of the cockpit the days of exterior door mirrors and blind spots are therefore over. The windshield flows into a glass panorama roof enabling the occupants to enjoy a driving experience similar to that offered by a targa with a removable roof. Real sportscar: Front mid-engine, turbocharged and rear-wheel drive The stretched hood reveals the powertrain concept of the GT Concept: Just like the first Opel GT and US sportscar icon Corvette also made by GM it has a front mid-engine. The vehicle's center of gravity is therefore low and central ideal for sporty handling and excellent cornering dynamics. The Opel GT Concept has a powerful 1.0-liter, threecylinder turbocharged engine based on the ultra-modern all-aluminum engine used in ADAM, Corsa and Astra. The extremely efficient direct injection gasoline unit develops 107 kW/145 hp and maximum torque of 205 Nm in its sporty trim (consumption values for the Opel GT Concept are not available yet). The turbo power is sent towards the rear axle with mechanical differential lock via a sequential six-speed transmission that is operated by shift paddles on the steering wheel. Thus, the Opel GT Concept possess traditional rear-wheel drive especially appreciated by sportscar purists. The performance of the two-seater with a total weight below 1,000 kilograms also matches this. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds and has a top speed of 215 km/h. A further highlight of the Opel GT Concept are the main headlamps with integrated indicators. Thanks to ultramodern projection technology, these shine very threedimensionally. The next generation adaptive full LED light is obviously the perfect match for this technology. The Opel IntelliLux LED® matrix light, which allows glare-free high beam driving, already made its debut in the new Astra in 2015 and won the SAFETYBEST Award. The Opel GT Concept sees the introduction of the next stage of development of the intelligent light system. The design of the lights is rounded off by the three-dimensional design of the tail lamps that make the new GT distinctive at night.

Danny Boy is ready to fight Sarukhanyan Sharlien Tjambari In his first fight for the year, Albinus “Danny Boy” Felisianu will face Vage Sarukhanyan (25) a Russian national, on 27 February in Ondangwa. They will be battling for the IBO and IBF International championship. During an interview with namib times, Danny Boy said the fight will take place at Kamuti Lodge in Ondangwa. Tickets are available at Kamuti lodge, VIP tickets are N$500 and normal tickets are at N$200. Danny Boy's training camp will be in Oshakati at Kilimanjaro Boxing Promotion and the training camp this year is sponsored by Cross Roads Distribution Namibia. When asked if he is ready to fight the Russian, Danny Boy said he will make Swakopmunders proud. “I am ready for the fight, and I will do it like last year,” he said. According to Danny Boy, the contact between Team Danny and Kilimanjaro Boxing Promotion allows him to fight three fights per year of which two are scheduled to take place in Ondangwa and one in Omuthiya, in the Oshikoto Region. Danny said he is very thankful to his fans and also thanked Dare Devil Adventures for sponsoring his training camps and taking care of all his travelling expenses every time he had to travel with fights last year, and Auto Perfect for assisting him. T-shirts of Team Denny will be available as from end of February, with a new brand of Team Danny's logo. Danny is urging all his fans to buy tickets as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Coastal Girls to V-Power V-Power Football Club intends to stop the Magicians with everything at their disposal, during the Women Super League this year, including the acquisition of a Swakopmund trio on a loan basis until the end of the 2015/2016 season. Two central defenders, Anna Ndakolonghoshi and Stevencia Araxas and one lethal stiker Cheronice Bianca Guriras are expected to join coach Risto's oil ladies on Friday from coastal sides Dream Team and Desert Rollers respectively. The three girls were signed up with V-Power FC so they can get exposed to a different type of playing and

Women beach volleyball trying to make it to Rio 2016 The Namibian national women's beach volleyball team is working hard towards qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games set for Brazil in September this year. The team's coach James Verrinder, who doubles as the director of Namibia Beach Volleyball, told Nampa this week that the team of four players train six times a week in the afternoons only, because most of them are employed fulltime. The team consists of Kim Seebach, Julia Laggner, Rosi Hennes and Stempanie Palmhert. They competed in the annual Castle Light International Championship last December in Swakopmund when they won against Uganda, and also won against Rwanda in the first round and against Angola in the second round of the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) Continental Cup in Cairo, Egypt last November. This means Namibia qualified for the third round of the CAVB Continental Cup Olympic qualifiers after finishing in third place out of four countries participating in Group C, with Egypt finishing in top position and Rwanda as runners up. The top three countries from each of the four groups (12 teams) qualify for the next round, which is already the semifinal, and will be played beginning of 2016. Only one team in each gender from Africa will qualify for the Olympic Games set to take place from 07 to 18 September in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The date and venue for the next round of qualifying competitions will be announced at a later stage. Verrinder is optimistic that the sport is growing in Namibia. There are three beach volleyball clubs in the Swakopmund, one in Windhoek and plans are underway to establish clubs in Oshakati and Rundu. Beach Volleyball is affiliated to the Namibia Volleyball Federation, and Verrinder appreciates the recent agreement between Volleyball England and Namibia Volleyball Federation, saying it is a great initiative for volleyball development in the country. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the two federations in Windhoek on 22 January 2016, and will see the two organisations sharing expertise and equipment in the next 10 to 15 years. Meanwhile, the men's beach volleyball team did not proceed past the first round of the qualifying competitions. NAMPA competing league. The trio's first test will be against ambitious club, Tura Magic on Saturday, Tura Magic have been the leading team in the Women's Super League. According to Risto Shikomba, the coach of V-Power, there are eight matches left for this season and the coastal players are going to be part of each and every match lined up. Risto said his team is well prepared to beat Tura Magic, especially with the help of the three players from the coast.
