Rössing launches construction of six complementary water reservoirs Sharlien Tjambari CNNC Rössing Uranium (Pty) Ltd constructed six water reservoirs at the tune of N$105 million to complement the storage capacity that is provided by NamWater reservoirs. The Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform Calle Schlettwein inaugurated the Rössing Uranium Water Reservoirs yesterday, 28 April.

According to Project Manager, John Moody, the reservoirs have a diameter of 41.27 meters, they are 8.4 meters high, and have a capacity of 10 000m³. Moody said the earthworks started in May of 2021, the tank foundations started in June of 2021, and the first tank installation was started on 16 August 2021. Tank one and two were completed in October 2021, and all six were completed in December 2021. All work was done in about four and a half months. In his keynote address, Schlettwein said, the water reservoirs will enable the mine to continue with production for seven additional days during periods of extended water supply outages. It means that now with the additional

storage capacity can bridge unforeseen extended water interruptions, and the security of water supply is significantly improved for both, the mine, and the community of Arandis. According to Schlettwein, the unpredictable sulfur outbreaks in the ocean occasionally disrupt the desalination of seawater at the Orano Plant, which is a crucial source of freshwater for the central west coast water region generally and Rössing mine specifically. Schlettwein said, “of the total demand for freshwater, roughly 50 % is satisfied from the desalination plant. This temporary stoppage of supply from the desalination plant does not only put great strain on the security of
