The Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) is busy preparing for a comprehensive survey designed to collect data on household income,expenditure,andlivingconditions,slatedforMarch2025 untilMarch2026.
The national statistics agencyconcludedtheir training of trainers' workshop for an upcoming national survey at SwakopmundlastFriday Dr Ingo Paulina (Demographic and Social Statistics) explained that by assessing variousaspectsofincome and expenditure, the survey will help to identify and address povertytrendsanddisparities within the
country as this is the primary source of data on income, wealth and expenditure in Namibia This household income, expenditure, and living conditions survey is a crucial survey in Namibia as it provides essential data on household income, spending patterns, and living conditions and thisinformationisvital for measuring poverty, assessing inequality, and shaping evidence-
based policies for economic development and social welfare programs, as per Dr Paulina. The information is also needed for theconstructionofarevised basket and weights for consumer priceindices, andcompilation of National Accounts, and international reporting. The lastNationalhousehold income, expenditure, and living conditions survey (NHIES) was

2015/2016.
The just completed training of trainers (TOT)workshopwasin preparationofthemain training which is the training of field staff scheduled from 24 February to 20 March 2025, Dr Paulina remarked.
According to her, the survey will be conducted by trained fieldworkers from the NamibiaStatisticsAgency who will visit selected households to gather the necessary data. The
selected households canexpecttrainedenumerators to visit their homes to collect information on their income, spending, and livingconditions.
Households will be asked to record their daily expenses over a specific period and providedetailsontheir sources of income
Enumerators will be conducting interviews using structured questions using tablets to ensure accurate data collection.
DrPaulinastressedthat
participation is confidentialandvoluntary, and all information provided will be used strictly for statistical purposes to support national development planning and policymaking.
She further noted that the time required to complete the survey variesdependingonthe size of the household, necessitating advance notice to households regarding the potential durationandrequesting their patience with the interviewer
Additionally, a daily record book will be provided to households for recording their acquisitions and con-sumption over a period of 14 days following the interview
“Participation is mandatory for all selected households, and it is highly encouraged

Local Trans Community Turns to GPs for Specialised Care
Sharlien Tjambari
InNamibia, transgenderindividualsareforcedtorelyongeneralpractitionersforspecialised care, as the country lacks access to public gender-affirming hormone replacement therapy (GAHRT). The absence of such treatments in state healthcare facilities, coupled with the requirement formedical aid, has left many in the trans community without the support they need, leadingthemtoseekalternativesolutionsinsecrecyorabroad.
A 22-year-old transgender man says he has wanted to transition for over two years. Born femaleandwantingtobe male, Max (not his real name) says not being able to transition makes him hate his body, leaving him vulnerable to discrimination. He said, as a transgender man living in Namibia, his hope regarding the accessibility of HRT is to have these therapies available to people like himself without obstaclesorgenderdiscrimination. Max said he is readytotransition. While he believes one can never be fully ready for change, the thought ofaligninghisbodyand physical representation with how he feels and sees himself is the most euphoricfeelingforhim. "I do this because it's something I truly want for myself." Like Max, many transgender Namibians want access to GAHRT, a combination of hormones like antioestrogens, androgens, and hormone blockers. However, due to a lack of endocrinologists openly practicing GAHRT in Namibia, the doctors who do help often do so in secret.
Princess Verquisha Veronica Bock says she was on HRT but is now
off due to financial constraints; it is financially draining. "HRT is very expensive, and the process of reaching sexualreassignmenttherapy is quite expensive becauseitisnotprovidedin Namibia by state hospitals." Verquisha's wish is for state health facilitiestoprovideaccess to HRT and sexual reassignment surgical therapy Doctor A, who prefers to stay anonymous, says that obtaining the right hormones for treatment is not the biggest challenge "Feminisation hormones are readily available because they are used to treat menopause, butwhenitcomes to masculinising hormones, the situation is different. There are far fewer options, and some of them are special orders or compounded medications These compounded medications can lack proper quality control. The real issue lies in the specialisation Namibia doesn't even have an endocrinologist at the moment.Thismeansthe country lacks the necessaryexpertisetotreat basic hormone-related issues.Notonlydoesthis affect the ability to manage hormone dysfunctions, butitalsoprevents
the alteration of hormonefunctionstomatch respective genders, which is essential for transgender individuals seeking medical support," said Doctor A. With no endocrinologists practicing genderaffirming care in the country and a lack of trained psychologists in hormone replacement therapy, manyNamibian transgender individuals are left without critical medical support needed to align their physical selves with their gender identity Another doctor, DoctorB,whoseidentity is vehemently protected by the trans community, says that the absence of access to GAHRT reflects a broader issue within the Namibian public healthcare system. He explains that individualswhocometo him for GAHRT are vulnerableandatrisk,as a combination of scarce resources, limited healthcare infrastructure, and social stigmas compounds the struggle forequalityandmedical dignity "Whensomeone ismakinggoodprogress and achieving the desired body changes, but then they run out of funds, there can be a significant gap in their hormonetreatment. This leadstoareversalofpro-
gress because they can't afford the therapy anymore, causing them to defaultontheirtreatment for months, or even a year Thissetbackcanbe tremendous," he explained. He also noted that GAHRT is quite expensive, asitisn'tcoveredbymedicalinsurance, meaning that patients must be financially stable to begin the treatment.Themostcommon and effective options for hormone delivery are injections and patches, which typically cost between N$600 and N$700 per month, at a minimum.Luckily, some members of the trans community have been abletotransitionabroad. Jaqui van Staden, who was born male and transitioned to female, beganGAHRTinEurope when she moved to Germany to live and work there. In Germany, she found an endocrinologist who guided her through the costly process Jaqui stated, “My endocrinologist monitored my kidney, blood, and liver functions, as hormones are metabolised in these organs.” Jaqui's journey to transitioning took over twoyears.Shenowlives anormallifeasawoman and is grateful she could
afford the surgeries and therapies. According to Jaqui, transitioning in Namibiawasmuchmore difficultbackthenthanit is today “There was only one psychiatrist in Windhoek, and their knowledge of transitioning was limited. It was something they likelystudiedbriefly, but there wasn't any real experience in the field,” she said. Jaqui said that when she returned to Namibia in 2016, she didn't experience any problems getting her HRT from her general practitioner, as by then she had been on hormones for a very long time.As for Jaqui, transitioning improved her qualityoflife.“Ifeltthat I could live, that I am alive. Ever since I started,Ihaveneverdoubted that I should not have doneit.Iamhappywith mytransitionandwould neverwanttochangeit.”
NamibTimesalsospoke with Maria Del Rosario Hamutenya, who recently started her transition in Europe. Maria shared,“Itransitionedin Europe (through vaginoplasty), but I initiallybeganseeingsocial workers, psychologists, and eventually private doctorshereinNamibia. After facing severe discrimination in public healthcare spaces in Namibia, her donors helped her transition in Europe and are paying forhermedication. The total treatment cost
N$4650145.28,butshe did not face significant logistical or financial challenges during her journey Mariaexpressed that her primary concernsaboutnotpursuing treatment in Namibia werethelackofaccessto safe hormonal therapy and appropriate medical care for her transition. Shesaid, "Discriminationthrough invasive questions and lack of knowledge contributes to disparities in healthcare and places a disproportionate burden of health risks on us as transindividuals.”Maria received overwhelming support from her husband, family, and friends throughout her transition Despite taboos, gender-affirming care is not illegal in Namibia, nor is transitioningfromonesexto another The fact that many from the transgender community are accessing specialised care from general health practitioners is a concern Without the involvement of the public healthcare system in administering these therapies, the doses and medication cannot be regulated, putting this keypopulationatfurther risk.Studieshaveshown that gender-affirming care can have a positive impactonmentalhealth. By reducing gender dysphoria and increasing self-acceptance, it can lead to decreased rates of anxiety, depres-

sion, and suicidal ideation among transgender individuals. In the meantime, there are people like Max who claim he has faced immensediscrimination because his body does not correspond with his gender He, like countless others, needs to spend thousands of dollars for GAHRT abroad or have it administered by general healthpractitionerswho often treat them in secret.
