Namibia's first green hydrogen production plant was launched by the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group and CMB. TECH on Tuesday, 22 February. The plant will be built in the Erongo region. In a statement by the Economic Advisor to the Namibian Presidency, James Mnyupe on what the government is trying to achieve with the Green Hydrogen Demonstration plant, Mnyupe gave his views why energy security enhances economic growth, while energy insecurity measured by energy intensity and carbon intensity variables has a negative impact on economic growth: “We are pursuing energy independence from a troubled Eskom, we pay about 3 billion Namibian dollars for the 60-70% of the energy we import from the SAPP, 40% of it comes from Eskom. It is well documented that our electricity is some of the most expensive on the continent, and as a result, we are losing out on large investment opportunities including the recent Vedanta refinery that was poised to deploy N$6.5 billion dollars into the economy. As these gigawatt projects are built in the South, we are exploring the possibility of off-taking curtailed and dispatchable power from them at attractive prices, positively impacting our current account surplus, reducing our cost of electricity and ultimately increasing our competitiveness from a manufacturing point of view.
