De Duine presents its orientation A night to remember for the Grade 8's of 2017. De Duine Secondary School held it's annual orientation concert on Thursday, 26 January under the clown theme which commenced in the school hall. Orientation is an old school tradition which dates many years back; an official attempt on new candidates (grade 8's) after taking their first footsteps on secondary soil, before they can officially adept in the school. This however, is a welcoming procedure that every grade 8 learner have to endure during their obligated introduction time. Making them feel like grade 1 again on a secondary level. These orientations are often followed by a concert performance, where every grade 8 class gets the chance to deliver a special item in which they can exhibit their talents. The event started off with a booming music entrance by Mr J Neporo which was the intern DJ for the evening. The enthusiastic spectators were asked to rise and sing the National and School Anthem. Head boy, Veikko Shakapala stunned the crowd with his astounding welcome remarks, followed by a scripture reading from Medwin Swartbooi. Edwardo Cotton opened the stage with a spectular rap performance that got the spectators on their feet and soon the grade 8A and 8B came out leaving spectators amused with their dancing performances, and thereafter grade 8C showed the crowd how it should be done with their breathtaking drama and dance performance. A short break commensed shortly after, giving the audience time to grab some refreshments at the school tuckshop. As the spectators rushed back into the hall, the General Jitas continued the concert by jumping on stage with a jaw dropping performance. After having the crowd sweat
with excitement, the grade 8's came back adding some amusement with their two role plays, a dance and a modeling act from the grade 8 D. Grade 8E brushed it off with some great dance moves. As the event came to a sadful end, the O.K.K left spectators drooling with amazement after finishing off the night with their dancing performance. After major cheers, grade 8C was declared winners of the competition. This was initiated to create a memorable experience in these learner's first secondary education years, enjoying themselves and at the same time making their audience burst with laughter and pleasure. To top the icing on the cake, after all the hardwork, the grade 8's were treated to an adventure at Dolphin Park the following day, accompanied by their LRC members. This however, allows them to interact with one another, having fun and at the same time setting an equal boundary between junior learners and their leaders. This helps them to better understand each other to enable better co-operation amongst both parties. On the last day of January, the grade 8's were officially made part of the school by Mr A Van Wyk, principal of the school, in attempts of cutting the ribbon as the grade 8 learners stepped into the school, followed by a short assembly thereafter, to notify these learners of what to expect the next few school years as well as informing them of how the school infrustructure operates. Now the grade 8's are able to feel like ordinary learners once more.
