DRC residents will soon have water and electricity Sharlien Tjambari

The story of sharing four taps and walking long distances to fetch water will soon be a story of the past for the legal plot owners of DRC informal settlement in Swakopmund after the council have decided to bring services closer to the people of DRC who are legal plot owners. According to the Marketing and Communications Officer of the Swakopmund Municipality, Mrs. Ailie Gebhardt, it is Council's priority to formalise the DRC and bring services to the community and the main aim of the project is to bring water to the homes of the residents of DRC. When asked why the council is only bringing water to the residents of DRC now, Gebhardt said there were no funds for the project back then and now funds are available for this new development and “ it is Council's intention to provide each and every household with full municipal services, but this will happen in time and as soon as more funds become available”. Delfina Meyer to be charged again

Delfina Meyer

Piquet Jacobs

Sources close to the investigation into the 2015 death of a female police official at the Walvis Bay road block, after allegedly being hit by a vehicle driven by Walvis Bay resident Delfina Meyer, confirmed this week Meyer will be re-charged for culpable homicide as soon as forensic results is received by the investigating officer. Meyer was arrested in May 2015 after running over a female police officer at the roadblock outside of Walvis Bay. Meyer allegedly then fled the scene, forcing a patrol vehicle to pursue her which led to her arrest. She allegedly also refused to give her co-operation and was eventually arrested on charges of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, failing to stop at the scene of an accident as well as failure to render assistance to the injured. The case against Meyer was withdrawn late in 2016, as the forensic results were not yet received. Her acquittal led to questions, specifically by angry family members of the deceased officer. A senior police source indicated though the charges were only temporarily withdrawn in order to provide ample time for the forensic results to be finalised and forwarded to the investigation.

Paramedics from E-Med Rescue 24 treated all the victims. The babies were fine and miraculously sustained no injuries. The victim was admitted to hospital though as she was suffering from severe shock after the ordeal. “We spent the next two hours looking for the suspect, but were not able to find him. We lost his

According to Gebhardt, the taps that are currently in place at DRC will be recovered for alternative use if still functional. She said the illegal plot owners will have access to the taps that are currently in place, but the taps are normally recovered for alternative use if still functional. Gebhardt says the good news is that this new development include the supply of electricity and other municipal services such as sewerage, refuse removal, etc. Of all the residents in and around the DRC, those considered as “legal plot owners” are 1227 at present, however Council's intention is to come up with a housing solution which includes all residents in and around the DRC. Gebhardt further said that the development process will be completed in time, “it all depends on the availability of the funds and the project is expected to be completed during this year (2017), if construction is not interrupted” she adds. Messrs Strydo Construction cc was awarded the tender under Contract T40/2013 : Provision of Services to Blocks 1-3 & 8-11 DRC for the Mass Housing Initiative project and a total of N$ 2 663 335.56 was availed by the Government as part of Mass Housing Development Initiative. “We are advising the community to kindly co-operate with the requests to move their shacks or else the project will be delayed. If they do not move, it will make the provision of services more complex” Gebhardt concluded. The DRC residents said they are very happy that the council is finally bringing water to their homes, but said they were not sure about the electricity at this point in time because they have not heard any talks about electricity, but they will be more excited if they also receive electricity. Two trucks lose their loads at Swakopmund Erwin Leuschner

Two huge granite blocks fell from a truck on Wednesday evening at the traffic circle on the eastern outskirts of Swakopmund. Earlier at the same day the load of a truck transporting two litre Coca Cola bottles shifted. The first incident occurred late in the afternoon after a truck, which was travelling to the Coca Cola depot in Walvis Bay, entered Swakopmund. The driver stopped the vehicle close to the Puma Service Station after he noticed that the entire load had shifted and was almost falling of the flatbed trailer. All the Coca Cola bottles had to be loaded onto other trucks and then transported to Walvis Bay. It is suspected that the load shifted to the side whilst the driver was going around the traffic circle. No damage was caused though. Later that same evening a truck lost two huge granite blocks whilst travelling around the

new traffic circle constructed on the B2 highway east of town. The truck apparently drove over the traffic circle, causing extensive damage to the tyres. The two blocks smashed on the sidewalk, causing further damage and demoli-shing one lamppost entirely. Residents have called on the Swakopmund Municipality to set up small hobbles as you enter Swakopmund, to warn drivers of the upcoming traffic circle so that they slow down. Since its construction a surprising number of trucks have toppled over entirely at the traffic circle close to the Swakopmund truck port.

HAN calls on the public th Happy 50 Birthday to stand up and fight Lisbet Beukes rising crime Erwin Leuschner

The Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN) is seriously concerned that the rising crime wave – especially at the coast – is crushing the tourism growth. HAN issued this statement after an armed robbery took place at a guest house in Kramersdorf a week ago (namib times reported). In the meantime, two similar incidents occurred. “Unfortunately, rising crime, and in particular the increasing brutal armed robberies at guest houses and sites frequented by tourists in both Swakopmund and Walvis Bay may destroy Namibia's opportunity to become the most desirable tourism destination in Africa by the end of this year,” the statements reads. “Risks to safety and security of travellers and Namibians alike may ruin Namibia's chances of becoming the most popular tourism destination in Africa.” It is for this reason that

HAN calls on all stakeholders to stand together and halt the serious threat that the rising crime levels at the coast pose to tourism prosperity. “Hospitality Association of Namibia, and its coastal members in particular would like to urge NAMPOL, the Namibia To u r i s m B o a r d , t h e Ministry of Environment & Tourism and all relevant government authorities to ensure that Namibia's environment, both in terms of nature and safety, remains conducive for tourism growth and prosperity,” HAN states. HAN further calls on the

public to action and contact the Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch at 085 999 to find out how they can be of assistance and get involved. “We furthermore ask you to call your local Police Charge Office and report any incident,” the statement continues. According to HAN the Namibian tourism industry last year experienced one of the best results in over a decade, with Namibian tourism accommodation properties recording nearly 60% occupancy across the country and throughout the year. The coastal

region even exceeded that average, fairing the best of all regions, with accommodation on average over 62% filled in 2016. “At the moment, 2017 promises to be equally positive for tourism, if not better, with a high demand for tourism services currently processed by tourism operators. This trend is of particular importance for Namibia at a time, when other economic sectors, be it fishing, agriculture or mining to some extent, experience difficulties,” it states.

Today’s a very special day for you may today be filled with joy and happy memories of the past. And bright hopes for the future. Be the person who you are with that smile on your face With Lot’s of Love !!!

Stakeholders in Namibia’s large pelagic fishery, targeting mainly yellow fin tuna, believes seismic research activities off Namibia is a great deal responsible for the near disappearance of this fish species from the country’s fishing grounds. Seismic research is necessary to determine natural gas and crude oil reserves deep under the surface of the ocean seabed. This research involves among others the discharge of large volumes of compressed air under the water surface to use sound echoing to determine possible fossil fuel reserves. This is believed to cause a disturbance in the natural migration patterns of the tuna biomass. Tuna virtually disappeared from Namibian waters in recent years. According to the Chairman of the Confederation of Namibian Fishing Associations, Mr Matti Amukwa the large pelagic to fishery catches are down to almost zero. A change in the licensing year for the industry from December to August of each year brought some respite, but ongoing dialogue with prospecting companies making use of seismic research remains crucial, according to Amukwa. NTB: Illegal accomodation establishments must to register Erwin Leuschner

The Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) has called on all accommodation establishments at the coast, especially in Swakopmund, to make sure they are registered with the NTB. The call comes in the wake of a sudden mushrooming of self-catering accommodation establishments online – those not registered can be prosecuted. Travelling the world has become easier than ever before thanks to the internet. On popular websites like www.airbnb.com and www.booking.-com travellers can quickly and easily book their accommodation from anywhere in the world. But there is a catch: “We have noticed a great number of people, advertising their property on these sites to generate an extra income. But they are required to register with the NTB by law. If they do not, these people can be charged,” said Renatus Neema, Senior Tourism Inspector at NTB, to namib times. Neema called on all accommodation establishments to register their businesses with NTB until the end of March. Otherwise they can face a fine of up to N$20 000 or even two years behind bars as is prescribed in the act. According to Neema there are currently about 3 000 businesses in the entire

Erongo Region registered with the NTB. Lately though, he has noticed a mushrooming of accommodation businesses – all over. “At the coast, especially in Swakopmund, many people own holiday homes. To generate an extra income they advertise these properties on these sites, on social media or in newspapers, which is illegal,” he said. On www.airbnb.com there are more than 170 accommodation establishments available in Swakopmund – only a handful of those are registered with NTB. And some of the advertised establishments make an absolute killing. They are located all over town, ranging from upperclass areas or beachfront properties to apartments in Mondesa. The average nightly price across all of these stands at almost N$1 300 per night, making these accommodation options more expensive than some registered hotels.

The most expensive option is described as “First House By Ocean Best Beach House Swakop”, which can be acquired for a hefty N$8 987 per night. The house is advertised to accommodate 16+ people in the nine bedrooms. “You will never find a place more luxurious, exquisite and beautiful than this ocean front house in Swakopmund. The back door opens straight to the ocean, big braai area, jacuzzis in every room, antique furniture, king size luxury beds, sauna, and in the best part of Swakopmund,” it states. According to Neema all accommodation establishments, even if you only rent out one room, must register with the NTB and pay a registration fee of N$200 (applicable per room) as well as a tourism levy of 2%. “These people are jumping on the bandwagon of big hotels and businesses, who are investing large

amounts of money to advertise Swakopmund as a prime destination. They are not paying a cent for advertisement but are generating large amounts of money,” he continued. Once accommodation establishments have registered with the NTB the authority inspects the property to ensure that these places indeed fulfil the minimum requirements and have a certain standard. “Some of these people are greedy. Some even prescribe a minimum amount of nights to stay and ask large amounts of money. We cannot allow the standard to be hampered,” he said. Neema added that when these properties are advertised online or even in newspapers, they must be able to provide a NTB registration number, otherwise they are illegal. “The moment you advertise accommodation you are required to register,” he concluded.

Suspect nabbed for possible cattle theft A suspect has been charged with possession of suspected stolen stock / produce after being caught offloading 2 cattle carcasses without a permit. The suspect had been travelling from Otjiwarongo and was busy offloading the carcasses in Johanna Benson street in Kuisebmond when members of the community found it suspicious and contacted the police. Upon arrival, the suspect could not provide the needed paperwork for transporting the cattle, as well as a satisfactory account for the carcasses. The eartags of the cattle were also already removed and the skin of the cattle had apparently been sold in Otjiwarongo. The suspect was then taken into custody and the carcasses were confiscated. We have given our complaints to various police officers, warrants and Station commander, but nothing has been done about it. There is a lack of food at station due to food accounts not paid. There is limited food available, so inmates are suffering, they eat twice a day morning at 9 or 10 o' clock , 6 slices of bread and at 16h00 they eat porridge with soup from that time till the next day. Inmate stay 17 hours with only food Station don't allow food from outside by family members , but if they can't provide for us why must we go hungry, because of debt not being paid. Water is another major concern, due to water being closed, because the station is cutting cost of water, so we inmates suffer for a lack of water. It is very unhygienic and very unhealthy and it is a health hazard because of germs and the smells. We have given our complaints to Ombudsman in September 2016. Last year when they made it a fit at the station. We sleep under dirty blankets which are full of dirt too causing a lot of unwanted illnesses. The food given to inmates are not healthy and don't contain the proteins we need. We know we have commited offence, but we innocent until proven guilty. We are still human and have rights even being here. We are being beaten by officers and stripped completely naked, because they are searching police cells, why are there cameras in the cells, if they are switched off while our dignity manly parts are exposed and we are humiliated. Officer use rubber gloves to tough our anus to feel we not hiding anything. We complain to call to our family members regarding issue such as bail, lawyer and to bring thing we need such as toilettrees, but we are not allowed due to officers not wanting to assist us. We complain going to the hospital but complains are not taken seriously and officer ask you question like if they are doctors. There are inmates with serious illnesses and diseases which can cause harm to healthy inmates. The toilet and shower facilities don't function, they are out of order and we inmates 14 in a cell use a 20 litre empty container to shower out of and use the same container to flush the toilet. It is unhygienic and unhealthy to stay in such condition. We don't get any cleaning material or chemicals to clean the toilet and shower facilities. The kitchen where food are prepared does not have ventilation extractions to extract the heat out of the kitchen, so the people preparing the food have to endure hot conditions causing them to sweat while preparing food. They don't have head cups to cover their hair while preparing food causing a health hazard . We need this matter to be addressed and immediately. Please we are going through harsh condition at the police station cell in Walvis Bay. Officers tell us we can complain but nothing will come of that because we inmates. (Pls note this letter was not checked for language and grammar, except for instances where legibility required us to do so. )

NAMA’s not confirmed for Swakopmund

Erwin Leuschner

The Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMA) will not necessarily be hosted in Swakopmund this year. The main event sponsor, Mobile Telecommunications Ltd (MTC), reacted to an article published in namib times recently stating that “no town” and “no venue” were selected yet.

The announcement by MTC was made after the Swakopmund Town Council discussed the NAMA's at its meeting at the end of January 2017 whereafter it was decided to support the event with N$200 000. Council discussed the event after Tim Ekandjo, Executive Chairman of the NAMA's, had sent a letter to the municipality in December 2016 stating that “Swakopmund made history by successfully hosting the event twice

Metrology Act soon in full swing Piquet Jacobs

The Namibian Standards Institution (NSi) hosted a workshop on Wednesday on the enforcement of the Trade Metrology (Act 77 of 1973), as amended. As the NSi is responsible for the maintenance of the National Measurement standards and the administration of the Act, which will be effective from 1 March, the company invited representatives from various businesses to explain to them the Act as well as providing a clear indication as how these businesses could be affected by it. Metrology is described as 'the science of measurement'. The current Act is outdated, but the NSi has put pressure on Government to address this matter and have the Act updated.

consecutively in 2014 and 2015.” “At this stage, we place on record that no town and subsequently venue has been selected yet, we will make a pronouncement about this in weeks to come,” said John Ekongo, Corporate Communications Officer, at MTC this week. He added that the letter drafted by the Executive Chairperson Tim Ekandjo in December of 2016 “was merely a support solicitation letter”, in which MTC sought Council support should the NAMA's be hosted in Swakopmund. The letter by Ekandjo seems to have caused

confusion, as he stated that “we would like to bring back the NAMA event to Swakopmund in 2017”; and: “This letter serves as an official request to partner with the NAMA 2017 even as accommodation sponsors, so that we can once again have a magnificent event in Swakopmund.” Subsequently Council, in its recommendation, stated “that Council takes note that the Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMA) 2017 will be hosted from 28-29 April 2017 at the Dome in Swakopmund.”

Coastal architects scoop two awards Erwin Leuschner

Two coastal architectural firms recently received awards at the Namibia Architecture Awards of Merit 2017 (NAAM) hosted in Windhoek. The event was organised by the Namibia Institute of Architects (NIA) and is a regular highlight for all architects across the country.

An award of achievement (compared to a silver medal) was handed over to Erhard Roxin Architects for the Reinhildsgarten Apartment Block in Kramersdorf. A project that receives this award should be generously possessed of poetic attributes and should demonstrate a high level of discipline & skill in execution by its author. The author of a project that receives this award is presented with a certificate, as well as a plaque that is to be attached to the project. An award commendation (compared to a bronze medal) was handed over to Hugo Scheepers Architect for the COSDEF Arts & Crafts Centre on the eastern outskirts of Swakopmund. This award is aimed at formally recognising an architectural

achievement above and beyond the scope of what is required to fulfill the merely practical and programmatic constraints that may have been imposed by the brief. To receive this award the functional and tectonic aspects of the building must be elegantly resolved. The entries submitted for consideration stemmed from all over Namibia. This highest award, an award for excellence, was handed over to Wim & Endri Steenkamp Architects for the Nakayala Private Academy and to Barnard Mutua Architects for the Nujoma Offices. The People's choice award winner was handed over to Kerry McNamara Architects Inc. for the Dr. Frans Aupa Indongo Oshakati Open Market.

COMMUNITY NEWS

24 FEBRUARY 2017

De Duine presents its orientation A night to remember for the Grade 8's of 2017. De Duine Secondary School held it's annual orientation concert on Thursday, 26 January under the clown theme which commenced in the school hall. Orientation is an old school tradition which dates many years back; an official attempt on new candidates (grade 8's) after taking their first footsteps on secondary soil, before they can officially adept in the school. This however, is a welcoming procedure that every grade 8 learner have to endure during their obligated introduction time. Making them feel like grade 1 again on a secondary level. These orientations are often followed by a concert performance, where every grade 8 class gets the chance to deliver a special item in which they can exhibit their talents. The event started off with a booming music entrance by Mr J Neporo which was the intern DJ for the evening. The enthusiastic spectators were asked to rise and sing the National and School Anthem. Head boy, Veikko Shakapala stunned the crowd with his astounding welcome remarks, followed by a scripture reading from Medwin Swartbooi. Edwardo Cotton opened the stage with a spectular rap performance that got the spectators on their feet and soon the grade 8A and 8B came out leaving spectators amused with their dancing performances, and thereafter grade 8C showed the crowd how it should be done with their breathtaking drama and dance performance. A short break commensed shortly after, giving the audience time to grab some refreshments at the school tuckshop. As the spectators rushed back into the hall, the General Jitas continued the concert by jumping on stage with a jaw dropping performance. After having the crowd sweat

with excitement, the grade 8's came back adding some amusement with their two role plays, a dance and a modeling act from the grade 8 D. Grade 8E brushed it off with some great dance moves. As the event came to a sadful end, the O.K.K left spectators drooling with amazement after finishing off the night with their dancing performance. After major cheers, grade 8C was declared winners of the competition. This was initiated to create a memorable experience in these learner's first secondary education years, enjoying themselves and at the same time making their audience burst with laughter and pleasure. To top the icing on the cake, after all the hardwork, the grade 8's were treated to an adventure at Dolphin Park the following day, accompanied by their LRC members. This however, allows them to interact with one another, having fun and at the same time setting an equal boundary between junior learners and their leaders. This helps them to better understand each other to enable better co-operation amongst both parties. On the last day of January, the grade 8's were officially made part of the school by Mr A Van Wyk, principal of the school, in attempts of cutting the ribbon as the grade 8 learners stepped into the school, followed by a short assembly thereafter, to notify these learners of what to expect the next few school years as well as informing them of how the school infrustructure operates. Now the grade 8's are able to feel like ordinary learners once more.

Two studios, One Heart Yoga And Urban Zen Yoga are two yoga studios based in Swakopmund (Sam Nujoma Drive). The two studios are run by Ronja Gossow and Sigi Kolbe respectively under one umbrella to accommodate clients with a variety of classes. Myoga is primarily a yoga studio, which offers different styles of yoga and also offers zumba, ballroom and latin dance classes to accommodate all ranges of ages and people. Ronja Gossow is the owner of Myoga and together with Sigi Kolbe teach the yoga classes. Andrea Brand offers Zumba classes and Svetlana Diergaardt offers the Ballroom Dancing classes. Being active and attending classes helps people stay healthy, improve stamina and strength, prevent depression whilst being social and getting to know other people. Yoga is not only suitable for flexible young people, but accommodates elderly, and those with injuries. Sigi Kolbe has been a yoga practitioner for 15 years, prior to that she used to train in a gym and participate in running events. Sigi's husband introduced her to Yoga as he had been a yoga parctioner in Germany, and this was an important influence in her yoga journey. Sigi opened her own Yoga Studio in Windhoek in 2004 named Urban Zen Yoga and taught Power Yoga, Vinyasa yoga and later Yin Yoga. In 2015, Sigi met Ronja via Facebook and this lead to Ronja inviting Sigi to teach a workshop in Swakopmund at Myoga with a colleague. When Sigi and her family relocated to Swakopmund at the end of 2015, Ronja and Sigi then decided to combine forces at Myoga. The first 8 months of 2016 were spent working from Myoga studio and additional classes were included to the existing ones. Sigi opened her own studio in September 2016 in Oceanview and it was decided to operate both studios in tandem. Both Ronja and Sigi teach classes in these studios. Ronja Gossow started Yoga, whilst she studied at University of Cape Town in South Africa, and practiced Yoga to bring a bit of balance from the stress of studying. When Ronja returned to Swakopmund in 2013 she decided to open her own studio as she missed the wonderful classes she experienced in Cape Town. Sigi and Ronja too have been successfully operating as one unit. The two studios run smoothly with two teachers supporting each other and complimenting each others teaching styles. According to Sigi 'it is very important to have a partner, to assist and stand-in when it's necessary. It is easy to get burnout when you run a studio alone. Both of us benefit from encouragement and inspiration and this keeps us motivated. All teachers have different strengths and if we can combine them then we can offer our clients a bit of everything'. The aim for Myoga and Urban Zen Yoga is to grow in every possible way. Client satisfaction is an important concern and aim. The primary goal is to be the best yoga facility in the country and both partners continue to work very hard to achieve this. Yoga unlike other sports is something you can do until an advanced age. More men have begun to attend yoga classes in the past few years, which has been encouraging. Yoga has primarily been seen as a 'women's activity' in the West, however these misconceptions are changing as men see the advantage of improving their flexibility to enhance their other activities. “Most people are incredibly stressed, worried about

survival, work pressure and other stresses - this creates an environment where people don't balance their lives adequately. Yoga gets them relaxed!. When people leave the class with a smile on their face and radiate a calm glow then Yoga has done what it is meant to do. There is nothing that makes you feel as good, calm and connected as a beautiful yoga practice. Lifestyle changes come when people start their Yoga practice and as teachers we support and advise where necessary. We open doors, teach our clients what they need to know, then they have to decide whether they want to enter”, concludes Sigi. Saturdays the two teachers get together to practice their own sequences and to remain in the correct physical condition to teach. In March the yoga teachers plan to offer a 3 hour hip opening workshop for their students. Workshops are ideal to work individually with the students and improve their practice. In order give the best to their clients, they attend teacher training courses to increase their own level of incompetence. Andrea Brand came from Romania (heart of Europe) 6 years ago. She is an international Zumba fitness and ZUMBA step instructor. Zumba is part of health progress, helps people lose weight while getting heart and muscles stronger. It includes fitness elements such as cardio, chorea, music toning, balance and flexibility and boost energy. “Anyone can do zumba without any fitness or dance skills, first class is often free. I am training overseas for my speciality. I try to give back to the community what clients given to me by raising money for a few people/ organisations”, emphasized Andrea. First she did the Zumba flashmob in the middle of Swakopmund two and a half years ago. NMC health days, Rain dances 2015, flashmobs to the opening of mall Platz am meer. She also did blue Zumba autistic awareness, programmes where everyone has to dress in blue to raise money for Fanilo Haller and pink classes for preventing cancer and many more. Two years ago she cut her hair during the Spar Breakfast in support of cancer. This year she plans to make a powerless class, where lights has to be switched off. Making use of candles and other luminous objects. This is an awareness for economic power wastage. At the zumba class they do have a combination of different music, just to mention a few; hip pop, reggaeton, belly dancing, bollywood, western country, cumbia. According to Andrea, the biggest problem in society is lonliness. At zumba class you are able to meet and interact with interesting people.

Disabled does not mean unable Sharoldine Bock Para Olympic Champion, Johanna Benson (born paralysed) wishes to motivate the community that anyone can become something, despite your condition, gender or defects by sharing her history and experiences. Benson's athletic life started in the streets of Walvis Bays as a young girl of 7-6 years by running with her family members (also athletes). She would often watch Olympics games on television admiring the renowned Frankie Fredricks, and Agnes Samaria, just to mention a few. Her dream as an athlete started formulizing at Kuisebmund Secondary School, where one of her coaches; Belinda Oberholster saw her potential during the Interhouse athletic competition and instantly directed her to the Para Olympics. She had to go undergo a few obstacles to reach the big target. She first took on the Nedbank Athletic Championship where she qualified to reach South Africa in which she competed in a normal athletic competition in 2006. Her first big competition started in the World Championship in 2010 where she started competing on an international platform in India, where she won a bronze medal in 100m. Benson did not stop there, 2011 during the World Championship in New Zealand she grasped a 4th position in 100m and 200m race, qualifying to participate in the 2012 Para Olympic games in which she made history for the country by receiving silver in 100m and gold in 200m. She went for bronze in her 100m and 200m race during the World Championship in France. During 2014 she was in full swing during the Common Wealth games where she received a bronze medal in long jump in Scotland. Benson thereafter failed for the next two years; first in 2015 during the World Championship and in 2016 during the Para Olympics in Brazil. Nevertheless, she has not lost her spirit, she will still attempt this year, despite the losses during the World Championship in London which will commence in

July, where she opts for a bronze medal in 100m, 200m and long jump. “When most people run into an obstacle they seek escape, but I have a plan to push forward when this happens. I learn all I can from my challenges. I know facing adversities is part of being successful”, Benson added. Three words she wishes to advise the nation “Have faith, focus, and be positive”. According to Benson if you have those words implemented in your life, success will be knocking on your doorstep. “I have a lot of challenges being at the Olympics and World championship or any other competition.

Competitions tends to be tough and I am often exposed to a lot of pressure from the nation, but nevertheless that does not pull me down, the risk only excites me even further”, noted Benson. Furthermore, she motivates herself by comparing herself to someone who is perfectly healthy. Benson also wishes to encourage her fellow disabled people, “We all have special talents, whether your body is normal functioning or not, we too can make something of our lives, don't let that inhibit you from reaching your goals”, Benson concludes.
