Gunshots tear silence in Hermes 66-year old woman locks herself in bedroom and has failed suicide attempt after argument with husband

Some four gunshots rang out in Walvis Bay's Hermes suburb on Sunday at around 13:30. It sent alarmed residents from their homes to ascertain the origin of the shots. Upon closer inspection it was found the shots were fired at a house in 16th Road, occupied by the Maass couple. The Namibian Police was dispatched to the scene. A security company's reaction force member also arrived at the scene. An armed police officer was seen entering the house. Soon thereafter the ambulance arrived at the scene and an injured person was evacuated to hospital. The Namibian Police confirmed the incident and explained that Mrs. Elizabeth Maria Maass (66) attempted to commit suicide and used a 7,65mm pistol in the shooting. She was hospitalised with a gunshot wound to one of her arms. The Police further confirmed in its crime report that an argument ensued between Mrs Maass and her husband on Sunday where after she locked her-self in the bedroom and shot herself. The firearm Mrs Maass used was confiscated and an investigation is launched into the incident. On the picture to the right: the 7,65mm pistol used by Mrs Maass. Swakopmund's municipal Traffic Chief, Melvin Cloete, opened up this week over an illness that not only cost him weeks from his work, but almost cost him his life. Cloete had to undergo an operation and as a result had been admitted to an intensive care unit at Swakopmund for two weeks. Gossipers and doom profits, who were not aware of Cloete's health woes, spread rumours that he had trouble with his employer, the Swakopmund Municipality. Some said he was fired and others said he opted from retirement.
