Erongo Law Enforcement Sports Association says no to Gender Based Violence Sharlien Tjambari The 4th edition of the Erongo Law Enforcement Sports Association (ELESA) Games commenced on Wednesday this week with “We say no to Gender-Based Violence” as the theme for this year. The games are taking place at the Vineta Sports field in Swakopmund. It started Wednesday this week and will end tomorrow. The Namibian Correctional Services organised this edition of the games which aims to strengthen ties, enhance fitness levels and build a spirit of unity among members of law enforcement agencies. On the occasion, the Patron of the ELESA games, Claudia Lofty-Eaton launched an antigender-based violence (GBV) initiative. LoftyEaton said: “It is my belief that the Armed Forces and the broader Namibian community believe in, support and will protect basic human rights of women in our community”. According to Lofty-Eaton, fighting gender-based violence is not just a police issue but, a community issue. She said sometimes it feels as if

the Namibian Police Force (Nampol) fights a sole and lonely battle against GBV. Lofty-Eaton further said laws such as the Combating Domestic Violence Act and the Combating of Rape Act, which were introduced by the government has helped a lot but is not enough. “Let us stand together as one. If we do so we can change the attitudes of Namibians. Today we stand empowered as sisters-embarking on a new era where we empower and embrace each other with love and respect”, Lofty-Eaton concluded. Four arrested for drugs Eileen van der Schyff

Four people, one of which is a 60-year-old woman, was arrested for dealing in drugs on Wednesday, Thursday 11 and 12 September. Johannes Tomas (25), was arrested for dealing in 88 units of suspected Crack Cocaine and was in possession of 3 small bankies of Cannabis in Kuisebmond Walvis Bay. The total value of the drugs found in Tomas's possession was N$8 950. Tomas appeared in the Magistrate Court of Walvis Bay yesterday. On the same day in Walvis Bay, Monika Mokhatu, a 60-year-old woman was arrested at a house in Theo Ben Gurirub Street in possession of one full and three halves of suspected Mandrax tablets and 5 grams of cannabis. The total value of the drugs found in Mokhatu's possession amounted to N$300. Mokhatu also appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrates Court yesterday. On Thursday, 12 September, two suspects were arrested at a house in the DRC location on Mondesa Swakopmund. Daglas Tsuseb (33), and Markus !Owos-Oab (26), were caught with 17 ballies of cannabis, 15 bankies, 3 full Mandrax tablets and 10 quarter tablets of Mandrax during police action. The total value of the drugs must still be determined. Both Tsuseb and !Owos-Oab appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate Court yesterday.

Members of various law enforcement agencies in the region including the Namibian Air Force, the Navy, 125 Motorised Infantry Battalion, 44th Artillery Regiment, Namibian Police and Correctional Services are competing at the games which ends tomorrow. The tournament kicked off with a street procession with the Navy Brass Band and the law enforcement officers. The Kick-Off game was between Namibian Airforce and Namibian Correctional Services (NCS). Namibian Airforce won the match by beating NCS with 3-0. The second match of the tournament was between the Navy and Nampol. The Navy scored 3 goals and while Nampol only scored 1 goal. The sports codes at the games: soccer, netball, volleyball, athletics and Darts. The first edition of games took place in 2008, the 2nd was in 2017 and the third took place in 2018 in Walvis Bay when Namibian Police arose as champions that year.
