Oil spill enters the Walvis Bay lagoon The Minister of Tourism Pohamba Shifeta visited Walvis Bay over the weekend to inspect various sites along the coastal areas around the harbour town affected by a heavy fuel oil spill. Oil spill response workers have been battling an oil spill since 8 March. At first, only beach areas in the vicinity of Dolphin Beach were affected. However, over the weekend a floating oil slick entered the Walvis Bay lagoon. Minister Shifeta met with the Chief Executive Officer
of Namport Bisey Uirab and the CEO of the Walvis Bay municipality over the weekend to determine how these relevant authorities will see to the clean-up. Also to determine progress made with the investigation to establish from which ship or
vessel the heavy fuel oil spill originated. It is believed a passing ship dumped the heavy fuel oil. The floating heavy fuel oil was split by the current off Walvis Bay, according to the Minister who spoke to namib Continues on Page 2
Two Congolese refugees residing in Namibia arrested with cocaine at Swakomund The Namibain Police arrested two Congolese nationals in Swakopmund on Saturday during two separate anti-drug operations, netting cocaine valued at N$1500. What makes the arrest of these two foreigners so much more cumbersome is the fact both have refugee status and live at the Osire refugee camp northeast of Windhoek. Katende Mulumba Fiston (32) was arrested in Mondesa Extension 3 at around 07:30 on Saturday. That is after cocaine powder valued at
N$500 was found on his person. Tsibola Andre Francois (32) was also arrested at Extension 3, but he had cocaine powder to the value of N$1 000 in his possession.
The duo made their first court appearances in the Swakopmund magistrate's court yesterday morning. Photographs of suspects on page 2.
