In the heart of the Namib Desert, just north of Swakopmund, a facility has quietly but powerfully shaped life in the ErongoRegionfor15years.
The Erongo Desalination Plant (EDP),ownedbyOranoMining Namibia and operated by NafasiWater, thismonthcelebratesa milestone that few industrial projects can match. More than 123 million cubic meters of potable water produced, and not a single lost-time injury recorded sinceitsfirstdayofoperationon 1June2010.

Henties Bay's water supply was significantly affected this week after ErongoRed powerlinepoles, supplyingelectricitytoNamWater'sOmdelboreholeswerevandalised, andcriticalcoppercableswerestolen.
Accordingtoapressreleaseissued byNamWateronTuesday, thirteen Erongo RED powerline poles supplying electricity to NamWater's Omdel boreholes were vandalised, and critical copper cables were stolen on Monday night.
“As a result, there is currently no power supply to the Omdel
wellfield, making it impossible to pump and supply water to Henties Bay and Swakopmund via that source,” the press release reads. As per NamWater, Henties Bay is significantly affected with Swakopmund continuing to receive water from the Desalination Plant and is thus not impacted. The National
water supplier further noted that on Tuesday, Henties Bay's reservoir level had dropped to 17%, and that efforts are underway to temporarily power the strongest borehole using the Municipality's generator set (genset),whichmaypartiallysustain supply until repairs are completed.

Built to secure water supply for the Trekkopje uraniummine, theEDPhasevolvedintoacritical regional asset, especially as water scarcity, population growth, and industrial demand put pressureontraditionalwatersources. Nowakey contributor to NamWater's supply network, the EDP services households, municipalities, and uranium mines across Erongo, enabling development and resilience in one of Namibia's driest regions. “Fifteen years on, the EDP continues to unlock the potential of the Erongo Region,” said Orano Mining Namibia MD Tommie Gouws at a commemorative event held on-site with plant staff and regional leaders. “Water security is economic security, and the availability of desalinated water has positioned Erongo to grow sustainably ” The plant's innovative energy recovery systems, installed from inception, help reduce operating costs and environmental impact by reusing pressure from its reverse osmosis process. With more than 50 000cubicmetersofseawaterprocesseddaily,this efficiency is vital. Now, Orano is preparing to commission a 10MW solar power plant near Arandis through a partnership with InnoSun Energy Once operational, this will further cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30%, or roughly 9 722 tons of CO₂equivalent annually, making the EDP one of the region's most environmentally

advancedutilities.SuzieNkambula,CEOofNafasi Water, highlighted the plant's sustainability-first approach “This is about producing water responsibly, reliably, and with long-term resilience,” she said Currently capable of producing 22.5 million cubic meters of potable water annually, the plant can be scaled to meet future demand, first to 25 million cubic meters within existing infrastructure, and up to 45 million cubic meters through further investment. Despite natural challenges like sulphur outbreaks, which can force temporary shutdowns to protect delicate membranes in the reverse osmosis trains, the EDP has maintained an extraordinary safety and operational record. Preventive action, strategic shutdowns, and coordination with NamWater and stakeholders ensure uninterrupted regional water supply even during these rare oceanic events. The milestone celebration, held on 13 June, also paid tribute to the people behind the plant. Five team memberswhohaveworkedattheEDPsinceitsfirst day were honoured during a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony, joined by Orano's executive team and the Hon. Governor of the Erongo Region. Hilifa Mbako, Executive Director at Orano Mining Namibia, captured the moment, “This is a celebration not only of infrastructure but of people, the quiet professionals who have kept this vital lifelinerunningeverydayfor15years.”
The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) is taking big steps to reconnect with its members and strengthen its presence across the country. One of those steps happened right here in the Erongo Region this week, with a Western Regional Roundtable that brought union leaders face-to-face with local members in an open, honestconversation.

“Additionally, Uis is experiencing a similar situation following a copper cable theft incident two days ago. The Uis reservoir was at 40% this morning, and water tanker mobilisation is in progress,” NamWater stated. On request for an update on the scenario, yesterday, NamWater responded that once a comprehensive update is available it will be communicated. NamWater urges all resi-

Meanwhile five suspects have been arrested at Karibib on Tuesday, after they were found in possession of 80- to 100 meters of suspected stolen copper wire with an estimated value of N$52000.
This was confirmed by
the Erongo Police Regional Commander, Commissioner NikolausKupembona. Commissioner Kupembona remarked that the police cannot yet confirm or deny that the suspected stolen copper cables found in the suspects possession are linked to the ErongoRed coppertheft. A member of the Bridge Club at the Lions Old Age Home in Swakopmund, Mr Ed Barbour celebrated his 95th birthday on Tuesday
Any person with some knowledge of playing bridge will agree that this card game requires a sharp and active mind.
It involves strategic thinking, memory, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances, all of which stimulatethebrain.
Hence, for someone to still be participating regularly in this game at the age of ninetyfive, speaksvolumes.
According to Mr Barbour he first started playing bridge as a student during 1948.
“There was no televisioninthosedaysand
