Electricity price hike Swakopmund mayor not that significant angered by theft of prepaid water stand Regional electricity distributor, Erongo RED, said this week it remains committed to supply electricity to its customers at the lowest possible rate, given the prevailing negative economic climate. The rate hike was formally announced on Wednesday.
Erongo RED has not increased its tariffs for the past two consecutive years (19/20 and 20/21) and the increase that came into effect on 1 July this year varies from two cents per unit to four cents per unit, depending on the customer segment. To further minimise the impact on electricity consumers, the regional electricity distributor will keep in place the following as well: ·There will be no basic charges for pensioners using up to the 40-ampere circuit breakers. ·The so-called “block tariff structure” will also stay in place for consumers using the 20-ampere circuit breakers. The first 100 units is charged at a lower rate, followed by a higher rate for units 101 to 500 and the highest rate from unit 501 onwards. The system resets every month, meaning the consumer will again pay the lowest rate for the first 100 units. ·Pre-paid consumers above the 20-amperes threshold will continue to pay the flat-rate tariff, meaning units are charged at the same rate throughout the month. ·Erongo RED will also continue to supply and install prepaid meters for free to pensioners, as well as for consumers under debt management. Erongo RED continues with its campaign to support consumers, who cannot afford commercial tariffs, with its lifeline Social Tariff policy. The company urges the public to apply to benefit from the Social Tariff policy if their circumstances meet the necessary criteria.

The water stand is the source of clean and accessible water supply to the residents of the DRC. “It is unbelievable that there are individuals who break down what is meant to uplift the community”, the mayor said. Namdeb’s eagerly awaits delivery of its new marine diamond mining ship Eileen van der Schyff
The largest diamond recovery vessel on the planet, now still only referred to as AMV3, is expected to arrive in Cape Town by next week, where the vessel will undergo final preparations before being commissioned by Debmarine in Namibia's offshore diamond mining industry early in 2022. ANV3 was constructed in Romania at the shipyard of Damen Shipyards. After it was handed over to its new owner Debmarine in Romania, it set sail on 19 August this year for its southbound voyage to Cape Town. At a length of 177m and fitted with ultra-modern offshore diamond mining equipment, Debmarine prides itself as the owner now of this ship, officially the biggest of its kind on the planet. The ship's new name has not been announced yet, and several of the components that the ship will be fitted with were fabricated in Walvis Bay. "It marks a significant milestone on the Debmarine Namibia calendar, and for our country Namibia, as we witness the completion of the vessel”. “It represents the largest ever single investment in the history of marine diamond recovery. We keenly await the arrival of this asset to join the rest of the fleet to recover marine diamonds safely and sustainably, while building a lasting positive legacy for Namibia", Willy Mertens, the Chief Financial Officer of Debmarine Namibia”, said in Romania last month during the official handover of the ship to Debmarine during a quayside ceremony at the dock-yard. The AMV3 that will use sub-sea crawling extraction techniques to retrieve diamonds from the seabed. The diamond bearing gravel will be processed on board. The vessel's expected operational lifetime is thirty years.

Domestic Tourism Campaign out of the starting blocks Sharlien Tjambari
Affordable domestic tourism is regarded as the main driver to bring economic recovery to Namibia's tourism industry. This was the message recently by tourism minister Pohamba Shifeta at the launch of the Domestic Tourism Campaign, which is a joint-initiative between the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) and the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). The Covid-19 pandemic brought a devastating 89,4 % plunge in the number of international tourism arrivals in 2020, costing the tourism industry billions in lost revenues, business closures and job losses. Most industries allied to the tourism industry also took a devastating and destructive blow. Where approximately 1,6 million foreign tourists visited Namibia during 2019 that number plunged to a mere 170 000 arrivals in 2020. That represented an 89,4 % decline. According to Minister Shifeta at the launch event that was held at Swakopmund, a revival is experienced this year. Bed occupancy increased by between 10 and 15 % and that this was mainly driven by domestic tourism. Hence the realisation that tour and traveling be encouraged among Namibians. It is expected the Domestic Tourism Campaign will assist to create local tourists and a recovery of the tourism and hospitality sector as well its allied sectors. Minister Shifeta however, also pointed out local tourism is price sensitive and the market is limited. High-end tourism activities like fly-in safaris and other high-priced activities and establishment will most likely not receive significant benefit. The Minister said he is appreciative of this domestic tourism campaign initiative. It is there to encourage the local population's curiosity about Namibia's attractions and activities and to stimulate a spirt of exploration among Namibians.
Adding: “We need to boost local vibes and domestic consumption. This shall start to help facilitate homegrown passion. Without doubt by giving locals and local businesses something to rally behind, we start by building a reconnection and enthusiasm that will grow into a desire to warmly welcome the world once Tourism Minister Pohamba Shifeta more with open arms and open hearts. Domestic tourism will continue to serve as an anchor in reviving Namibia's economy”. According to the Chairperson of the NTB, Madelein /Goagoses the campaign highlights quality destinations, visitor attractions and experiences on offer across Namibia. It aims to build back a demand for domestic traveling. The NBC's role is to film, make productions and broadcast to local audiences the places to visit and activities to take part in. These advertisements will feature play during prime slots on NBC TV 1. Voice productions will also be produced and played over various radio stations in local languages. Both NTB and Walvis Bay and Swakopmund businesses are encouraged to take part in the NBC's social media platforms will also feature Domestic Tourism Campaign of the NTB and NBC. Not only will this stimulate the these productions number of Namibian travelers but will also assist Namibian visitors to know what The campaign will run from this month to activities are available and what points of interest can be visited March 2022. NTB is calling on tourism businesses, operators of visitor attractions and destinations across Namibia to get involved. /Goagoses explained interested parties must approach the NBC, and that all negotiations with the national broadcaster have been finalised under the banner of the NTB. Note: The campaign is funded by KFW, at an amount of N$2.3 million.

Learners care for health heroes Rudi Bowe
The learners of Walvis Bay Primary School recently donated lunch packs, with drinks and energy bars to the health workers at the Walvis Bay State Hospital as a small token of appreciation for their hard work and ongoing sacrifice. The character traits health workers possess is responsibility, as thes e workers take the responsibility when many others have not and therefore, they are the health heroes of the nation. The learners thanked the health workers for that. The Director of Walvis Bay Primary School, Charl Theron, said as part of the monthly theme the school felt it the right thing to do to donate the lunch packs to theses frontline workers at the Walvis Bay State Hospital. Theron said, “The theme for August was responsibility, and to close off the month we decided to look at how we can exercise our social responsibility. We then decided that frontline workers who are working tirelessly at vaccination and testing sites, needed to be shown the appreciation we felt. This a small gesture. We hope it will motivate other institutions to also get onboard to ensure our frontline workers are well taken care off. To our frontline workers,
as a school, we are with you”. The Acting Senior Medical Officer at the Walvis Bay State Hospital, Dr Augustu Gawab, said the school is sending a message to other entities to support government. Dr Gawab said, “The
donated packs will be distributed to hospital staff members stationed at vaccination and testing sites. We are thankful for this beautiful gesture. Our staff sacrifices their time to ensure that the community is taken care off”, Dr Gawab said.

Van der Schyff crowned Pro-Ed top performing school Xco Championships Pro-Ed Academy in Swakopmund is the National Archery in the Schools Program in Rudi Bowe
Walvis Bay cyclist Luanne van der Schyff was crowned Namibia's national mountain bike champions when she won the Elite women's title at the Nedbank National Cross-Country (Xco) Championship in Windhoek last weekend. It was the first time that Van der Schyff won the national title which until last year belonged to the formidable two-time Olympian Michelle Vorster. Van der Schyff won the Elite women's race as she finished more than two minutes ahead of Nicola Fester and won the four-lap race in one hour 20 minutes 22 seconds, with Fester second in 1:22:50 and Marion Shonecke third in 1:28:18. Van der Schyff said to compete at high altitude is always challenging especially if you are from the coast. “I am super happy to walk away with the title of woman's elite Namibian Cross-Country champion. I have been a regular on podiums, but this is my first national title-so that in itself is very special. In the first lap and a half I was just managing my effort and I was sitting tight in 2nd position when Nicola Fester fell in front of me. I passed her and in lap 3 and 4 I extended my lead to take the win. It was a challenging track but also a lot of fun. It was my first XCO race since the 2018 National championships where I had a crash and suffered a concussion and broken sternum and was unable to finish that race. My coach, Michelle Vorster, who also held this title for the past 6 years was crucial in helping me prepare and reaching this goal”, she said. According to her, there is still plenty of room for improvement and she is looking forward to putting in the work as she will be participating in all the XC races next year. The complete results are at the race day events. Elite men: 1 Alex Miller, 2 Hugo Hahn, 3 Xavier Papo Elite women: 1 Luanne van der Schyff, 2 Nicola Fester, 3 Marion Shonecke Women U23: Cindy Rowland Junior men: 1 Bergran Jensen, 2 Ethan L'Estrange, 3 Anton Engling. Blue Waters in must-win derby at the coast Rudi Bowe
The table is set for a must-win derby tomorrow as the Mighty Blue Waters from Kuisebmond takes on neighbours Western Spurs from Narraville in the round of 16 in the MTC NFA Cup AWEH at 14:00 at the Jan Wilken Stadium in Walvis Bay. Blue Waters F.C. is one of the oldest football clubs in Namibia and playing in the country's highest league. The Namibia Premier League will go into tomorrow's derby against Western Spurs with two things in mind, showing they are the best at the coast and keeping their name in tact as the derby kings. Blue Waters advanced to the round of 16 after beating the other harbour town giant Eleven Arrows FC 2-0 in the round of 32 in the MTC NFA Cup AWEH at the Sam Nujoma stadium in Windhoek. Western Spurs from Narraville made history in qualifying for the round of 32 when they beat Kangweru Black Tops 4-3 in penalties to advance to the round of 16. It will be the first time that these two coastal football teams will play against each other. Chairperson of Western Spurs Football Club Tyrone J Mouton said the team is ready to compete against neighbour, the premier league outfit Blue Waters FC. “We had a good run out over the past weekend, with a lot of positives we took from both games. Due to unforeseen injuries, not all our players will be available this weekend but we can assure Spurs will have enough in our arsenal to deploy against our opponent as our sole focus this past week was on the cup tie which lies ahead tomorrow”, Mouton said, adding, “this is Football, so whichever team progresses to the next round will have deserved to be there and will have the support of the entire Erongo region to further progress into the competition, and that is something on its own to be proud of. Whatever the result on Saturday, Western Spurs Football Club will keep moving forwards with the community firmly behind the team. We urge the community for their continuous support to carry us through.” According to Mouton the whole team will enjoy every step of this historic journey both for players, club officials and supporters. Mouton explained that to date this is the furthest that the club has progressed in an NFA Cup Round and the team is ready to give their all and showcase the young talent on this platform. As the only established football club in Narraville, it is only league status separating Western Spurs from Blue Waters and with the talent that Spurs possess they are ready to compete at any top level. “The football lovers of this town and its community are in for a treat as they will witness some of our home-grown and experienced talent in action with the likes of Diego Fransman, Akio Van Wyk, Alexander Melani, Luciano Fischer and Petrus “Gombai” Nanghama just to mention a few”, Moutons said. “Western Spurs FC first and foremost wants to thank and acknowledge our partners ARYSTEQ Asset Management a boutique asset management firm for the 2021 season, we are proud to have them onboard, OTB Sport and MR24/7 Emergency Medical care as well as the community of Walvis Bay in particularly Narraville we do appreciates all your commitment and support towards Western Spurs Football Club” said Mouton. Let us get the numbers to the stadium and support our boys but I urge all supporters to please adhere to the Covid-19 protocol for their own safety Blue Waters Sports Club coach Paulus Shipanga said with most of his players available, the team is ready as it can be under the circumstances. Shipanga said “With contact sport being stopped most players couldn't train. My Boys started eating and some are little overweight and some lost their football appetite and opted for other ways of making money.” “Am not thinking about losing, but for now my focus is on Western Spurs and the big derby on Saturday. We take it one game at a time” Shipanga said. My team is made up of mostly younger guys who need all the help and support we can give them, but these youngsters are also fearless and ready to play. So, come Saturday we will play to win.
