Emerging Walvis Bay Company to Tackle Burning Tyre Crisis

Along-standingenvironmentalandpublichealthissueinWalvisBayisbeingmethead-on by a newly established local company determined to offer a sustainable solution. Tyrecycle, foundedbyLeighWesterdale,BrianLangerandChrisvanRensburg, officially opened its doors on Monday this week, bringing with it new hope forresidents tired of the toxiccloudsofsmokerisingfromthedumpsite.

Residents have voiced concern over the burning of disposed tyres at the town's landfill for some time now This activity is driven by scavengers who burn the rubber to extract steel for resale. This practice has created a consistent public health nightmare. The black, acrid smoke released by burning tires contains a dangerous cocktail of pollutants, including carbon monoxide, sulphur oxides, volatile organic compounds, and carcinogenic substances like benzene and dioxins. These pollutants not only contaminate the air but settle into the soil and water systems, posing longterm health risks to the town's communities. “The tyre burning has been a never-ending problem in Walvis Bay,” said Leigh Westerdale. “It's not just an eyesore, it's a serious health hazard. Namibia's e-ID Cards to Launch in 2026

ComeJuly2026,Namibianswillsaygoodbyetoold-schoolpaper identity documents and hello to a smart, secure digital upgrade, thecountry'sveryfirstelectronicidentitycard(e-ID).

The Ministry of Home Affairs made the announcement recently, confirming that the e-ID rollout is officially happening next year

This major shift into the digital age was first introduced by Minister Lucia Iipumbu inApril, and things aremovingfast.Atthe heart of it? A sleek, contactless card, similar to your bank card with a microchip that stores your biometric andpersonaldata. The goal is real-time ID verification in everythingfrombanking and voting, to education, healthcare, and government services.

Etienne Maritz, Executive Director of the Ministry, said the e-ID will change how Namibia handles identity, making the system safer, smarter, and harder to manipulate. “We're talking about eliminating fraud, cleaning up duplicate records, and building a more secure digitalsociety,”hesaid. The shift also aligns with the UNDP's digital identity framework, placing Namibia on the map as a forward-thinking player in e-governance.

Anationwideawareness campaign has already started in the Khomas Region, with the spotlight on the upcoming

“UnConferenceonDigital Legal Identity” happening on 26 June in Windhoek. Unlike your average conference, this one is fullyinteractive. The publiccanexpect open dialogue, direct answers, and no stuffy speeches Over 500 community members, including councillors and regional leaders, will be there to talk real concerns and practical solutions “Every innovation comes with uncertainty,” Maritz said.

“So we're showing up early, with honesty andfacts, tobuildtrust andclarity.”

Nowadays, we can just go down the street to our local tuck shop and withdrawoure-walletmoney

However, these people who are charging us extra is misusing us, as many of us don't know our rights, and just accept that they are operating within their rights,” one Mondesa resident said. Namib Times investigated the allegations, anditprovedtobefactual.

This reporter went undercover to one oftheallegedculprit-businessesinthe Mondesa vicinity (nearby DRC) to withdraw a N$100 e-wallet. After providing his cell phone number, PIN number and amount, the friendly assistant went to fetch the money and returnedwithonlyN$90.

When confronted about the remaining N$10,hewastoldthattheassistantdid inform him about a N$10-fee before the transaction was done, which was not the case, otherwise the reporter would have questioned it beforehand.

The reporter insisted on receiving the full e-wallet amount of N$100, but to noavail.

Only when he informed them that he was well aware that they, in their capacityascash-outpointforFNBare not allowed to charge any extra fees, hegotthemanager'sattention.

The reporter then cautioned that he could report them to FNB, as this is actual exploitation of the poor and vulnerable, as it seems this “hustle” mainly occurs at some businesses in and around Mondesa and DRC informal settlement. The remaining N$10 was quickly handed over, but not without a stern reminder for the reportertonotmakeuseoftheirservices ever again. Upon enquiry in this regard, FNB Namibia responded that this is a big No, No. “They are not allowed to do it, and if reported and found guilty of this misconduct their contracts will be cancelled and the FNB machines which they are using will be confiscated,” Namib Times wasinformedbyaFNBspokesperson. He further noted that normal procedures require for a warning-notice to be send out to the accused vendor to immediately stop this dishonest practice.Shouldthebusinessnotadhereto the notice, their contract with FNB willbenullified.

Anyone who might fall victim to this exploitation can contact FNB's Contact Centre at 061-2992222 and lodge a formal complaint against the business.
