Winter time at the coast increases the risk of shack fires. During cold spells shack residents make use of open flames for heat generation and light, whilst during the Eastweather high temperatures, the dry air and winds also increase the danger of shack fires. The situation now calls for urgent measures to be taken, as in Swakopmund alone nine shacks were totally destroyed by fires. The first shack fire occurred on 4 July, when three shacks burnt down. On Monday morning a shack was destroyed by a fire in the Matutura suburb and on Monday afternoon five shacks burnt down in Tulinawa, Mondesa. These numbers were provided by the Fire Brigade

Chief Adri Goosen. Fortunately no lives were lost in these fires. The first shack which burnt down belonged to a blind lady. She was at home at the time the fire started, but it is not yet established what had caused the fire. Shack fires are particularly tragic as in most cases people lost everything they have. Shack fires are mostly caused by open flames like candles, gas fires and illegal electricity connections. Shacks are usually construc-

ted of highly combustible materials like corrugated carton and wood and plastics. Flames spread rapidly and the burning materials are also emitting noxious gases.
