Boyfriend beats girlfriend with hammer, kills himself Erwin Leuschner
A 25-year old Walvis Bay resident committed suicide on Friday evening, shortly after he seriously injured his 24-year old girlfriend by hitting her with a hammer on the head. The man shot and killed himself with a pistol shortly afterwards. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police in Erongo, cases of attempted murder and inquest are now investigated. It is alleged that the incident occurred at a house in Topaas Street in
Kuisebmond at about 23:30. The deceased, Tomas Hangombe, allegedly hit his girlfriend, Saima Nepembe, for reasons not yet known. The victim was taken to Walvis Bay State Hospital where she was admitted in a critical but stable condition. It is further alleged Hangombe afterwards shot himself with a pistol in the head. He died on the spot. “It is not yet clear what caused the deceased to act in that way,” Iikuyu said.

Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, who served as the regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, has been transferred to the Oshana region as the new head of police administration. Her position has been filled by Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, who was promoted to that rank on 1 April. The changes in the Namibian police system came into effect on 1 April and saw a total of 52 police officers, who were chosen to serve in new positions. Most notably was the promotion of Major General Anne Marie Nainda, who was previously a Commissioner. She will serve as Deputy Inspector General responsible for administration. “Some of the changes were brought on due to some officers retiring. The structure was adjusted here and affected some regions,” said Erongo police Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu to namib times. In the Erongo region the abovementioned changes were
the only ones. Kashuupulwa had been serving as regional crime investigations coordinator for a few years. Before that she was the Station Commander at the police station in Swakopmund. She also served in the Omaheke region and in Windhoek, before she was stationed in Walvis Bay as the regional crime investigations coordinator. Iikuyu started his police career in Walvis Bay in 1990. He joined the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID). In 1999 he was promoted to Sergeant and became the Station Commander at Omatjete. In 2000 he was promoted to Warrant Officer and became the
Station Commander in Kuisebmond. After that he was again promoted to Inspector and was trans-ferred to Oranjemund, where he became the Station Commander. He also served as Station Commander in Lüderitzbucht, before he was finally transferred to the regional headquarters in Walvis Bay in 2011. There he was a staff officer at the CID. He was promoted to Chief Inspector in 2014. “Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu is a very experienced officer,” said Commissioner Nelumbu. The position is not new for Iikuyu though as he was acting in the position on several occasions when Kashuupulwa was on leave.

WBPHS “Legends Evening”a huge success As part of the Walvis Bay Private High School (WBPHS) 4th annual FNB Desert Sport Festival, which concluded on Saturday, an evening of fine wine and dining with rugby giants Bakkies Botha, Schalk Burger Sr, Danie Gerber, Braam van Straaten, former couch Pieter de Villiers and Namibia's own Jacques Burger was hosted at the Tom Swemmer school hall on Friday. The evening was well supported. The legends kept the crowd captivated with rugby talk and also taking questions. The night included a cosy wine tasting, auction and dinner. The legends were in town throughout the sport festivities and hosted a rugby clinic on Friday morning, sharing hints and techniques with players participating in the FNB Desert Sport Festival. *Namib times on Friday erroneously reported that former Springbok, Schalk Burger Jr, attended the FNB Desert Sport Festival as one of the “Legends”. Recycling project expands to Swakopmund landfill

This statistic was revealed in the Agenda of the recent Town Council meeting. Rent-A-Drum made two submissions to council requesting to promote and implement a deep collection refuse removal and storage system, mainly intended for large businesses, as well as requesting permission to recycle material at the Swakopmund landfill site. Both applications were approved. The Swakopmund recycling project was initiated a few years ago and peaked after Rent-A-Drum erected and commissioned a state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in partnership with the municipality. The facility was launched in September 2015. Initially the household recycling rubbish stood at 26.2 tons per month – and it has grown up to an average of 45.7 tons. Currently an average of 105 tons of rubbish is sorted per month in Windhoek. Rent-A-Drum recently applied to council to do recycling at the landfill. Even though the municipality has to date handed out 6 000 wheelie bins, specifically designed for recyclable material to various households, much of the material still ends up at the landfill. Council gave Rent-ADrum permission to demarcate an area on the landfill site to accommodate the storage of recyclable materials. Additionally council approved the implementation of a deep collection refuse removal system (DCS) as well as a reduced levy for the removal of refuse at all businesses that implemented (DCS). The deep collection system is also known as the Molok system and has been successfully introduced to some major Namibian towns, including Walvis Bay. “The system has proven itself to be the acceptable system for major new developments and businesses such as the Dome, Strandhotel, Platz am Meer, Swakopmund Hotel,” etc,” it states.

Earthquake similar to the East African rift system Erwin Leuschner
The Ministry of Mines and Energy analysed data of the earthquake that struck Botswana on 4 April and has issued an explanation. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale, was felt in many parts of Southern Africa, including by many residents of the coastal areas of Namibia. According to the Geological Survey of Namibia, which falls under this ministry, the event was similar to earthquakes of the East African rift system. “The rift system is a result of the breaking-off of the Somali-plate from the Africa-plate and runs from Eretria in the north down to Malawi in the south,” it states. The extension towards the south is an area of active research. “The quake is a result of
broadscale regional tectonic stresses similar to those that produce the East-African rift system,” it states. The earthquake was measured at two Namibian stations, one in Windhoek and another one in Ariamsvlei, at about 18:42. Additionally the Tsumeb station, forming part of the USGS global seismic network, recorded the event at around the same time. This was
about two minutes after the quake occurred in Botswana. The epicenter was approximately 238km northwest of Gaborone in Botswana, at a depth of 29 kilometers. Further analysis of the data from Namibia is currently not possible though as the network is undergoing an extensive infrastructural upgrade. “Therefore, only a few stations are currently online,” it states. According to the geological survey the region of southern Africa historically is perceived to have a low level of seismic activity. Earthquakes are not entirely uncommon in Namibia though and occur rarely, sometimes in the northwestern parts of the country. The recent earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 was perceived as “strong” and had the potential of damages that could occur. No damages were recorded in Namibia though.
Olivier-truck driver faces charge of culpable homicide Piquet Jacobs
The Walvis Bay police confirmed yesterday that the driver of the truck that caused the fatal accident in March in which Walvis Bay businesswoman Mrs Connie Olivier was killed, is investigated for culpable homicide. The docket will be submitted to the Prosecutor-General to consider the merits whether he would be criminally charged, it was explained. Since another fatal accident on Thursday evening on the B2 coastal road near Vierkantklip, the public again asks critical questions as to why trucks cannot be permanently re-routed to use the MR44 behind the dune belt. The accident on Thursday night was almost to the hour three weeks after the accident in which Olivier was killed. It has become custom for the Roads Authority to compel drivers of trucks heavier than 5 tons to use the MR44 during every December holiday when holiday traffic surges on all coastal roads. “Why can this not be a permanent arrangement for trucks to use the back road? I would also hope they make the same arrangements for the upcoming Easter long weekend when holiday traffic increases”, a road user asked yesterday.

Another fatal collision involving a truck on B2 Erwin Leuschner
One person died on Thursday evening (6 April) during yet another accident involving a truck on the B2 coastal road. The accident occurred at Vierkantklip between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. The accident almost to the hour occurred three weeks after wellknown Walvis Bay businesswoman Connie Olivier was killed when her vehicle slammed into a truck on the B2 near Walvis Bay. According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police at Walvis Bay the truck with registration number N143-540W, registered to Namib Mills was travelling towards Walvis Bay from Swakopmund. The driver, R. H. Ratjamรก (35) was the only occupant. At about 22:00 the truck collided head-on with an oncoming Isuzu double cab pick-up (N30318W) in the vicinity of Vierkantklip a few kilometers south of Swakopmund. The driver of the pick-up was also alone in the car. He was killed on impact. He was identified as 35-year old John Eddy Penda Nashandi (35). After the collision, the truck crashed through the barrier on the side of the road, ploughed through the sand and came to a standstill only meters from the beach. The truck driver sustained minor injuries. The cause of accident is not yet known. The investigation continues, according to Iikuyu. Sources revealed to namib times that shortly before the fatal collision the driver of the pick-up allegedly lost control over the vehicle, causing it to swerve on the road. The truck driver allegedly attempted to evade the collision. The accident once more sparked a heated debate on social media as to why trucks are still allowed to use the B2 coastal road.

Professional Speakers Association hosts four international guests

On 3 April the Swakopmund Chapter of the Professional Speakers Association of Namibia (PSAN) played host to four international speakers at Hotel Europa Hof. The evening was led by the chapter president Mr Brandt van der Westhuizen and featured international professional speakers: Dr Gustav Gous, who is an entrepreneur and life coach and serves as the national president for the PSAN; Nabil Doss, who is the former National President for the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers as well as the current president of the Global Speakers Federation; David Lim, a mountaineer who led the first Singapore expedition to Mount Everest, who is also a motivational speaker; and Karl Raats, a Belgium born speaker from the Netherlands. Each speaker did a fifteen minute presentation that focused on becoming a better communicator, a better speaker, running your business better and marketing your skills in a digital world. Mr Lim was the evening's first speaker and demonstrated how to market your skills to a global audience through multiple marketing techniques and image branding. Dr Gous spoke about selling customers not only content but an experience that transforms their lives for the better and mentioned his strategies that have brought him success. Mr Raats spoke about leadership, taking con-trol of your life and not letting others dictate your life and keep you from reaching your goals. The last speaker of the evening was Mr Doss who spoke about instilling the power of film trailers to speeches and presentations in order to captivate an audience and keep their interest. Mr Doss is known as "The French Voice of Paramount Pictures in Canada", he is a seasoned speaker and has scripted, voiced, directed, and produced hundreds of Hollywood blockbuster promotional trailers. The evening showcased different perspectives from global speakers who all praised the elegance of Swakopmund in particular and Namibia in general. They have spent the last week in Namibia and have enjoyed the natural beauty and atmosphere that the country has to offer. Busy week for bulk commodity handling in port Bulk commodity handling in the port of Walvis Bay this week includes the loading of 3000 tons of bulk salt, the discharge of 5000 metric tons of higher grade manganese for a mining company and the discharge of 10 000 metric tons of copper concentrate, destined for the smelters at Tsumeb. In addition, four container ships are also expected alongside to load and discharge containerised cargo. Two tanker ships are also expected alongside, respectively to discharge 19 000 tons of sulphuric acid for Rio Tinto Rรถssing and a consignment of petroleum products. Man dies after assault and stabbing in Mondesa Vernon Maletzky (22) passed away on Tuesday in Windhoek after being assaulted and stabbed on Saturday afternoon by a group of men in Mondesa. It is alleged that Maletzky confronted a group of men in Mondesa near USave Shop, demanding back his cell phone they allegedly stole from him. It is further alleged that during the confrontation, the suspects beat Maletzky with a stick and stabbed him with an Okapi knife in the forehead. The suspects fled the scene. Maletzky reportedly removed the knife before being rushed to Swakopmund State Hospital. Due to the serious nature of his injuries, Maletzky was transferred to Windhoek for further medical treatment on Sunday morning. He passed away on Tuesday. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder, whilst a second suspect reportedly fled to the North. The police continues the investigation. A jet carrying former U.S. president George W Bush and his wife Mrs Laura Bush touched down at the Walvis Bay International Airport yesterday. Massive diesel spill
A massive underground diesel spill has been discovered at TransNamib's locomotive refuelling depot in Walvis Bay. It is accepted diesel could have been spilled and seeping undetected into the ground at the railway yard for the past half a century. A report saw by namib times confirmed this. Disturbingly, the spill seeped into most of subterranean Walvis Bay. During an investigation the past several weeks, it was learnt TransNamib has already started with a cleanup project that involve the excavation of a large hole near the locomotive refuelling area. Seawater containing high concentrations of diesel seeps from underground into this large hole (pictured above). The diesel is then extracted from the water in the hope that if this project is continued, the massive underground diesel spill can clear. Traditional healers say foreigners and fly-by-nights give them a bad name A prominent traditional healer at Walvis Bay urged the Ministry of Health and Social Services this week to speed up the law-making process for Namibia to have a Traditional Health Practitioners Act, as this would be the only way to put practical guidelines in place to manage the conduct of traditional healers. Immanuel Katambo says too many people are calling themselves traditional healers, but are in actual fact greedy, cunning individuals whose only aim is to steal people's money or even having access to females for the purposes of sexual abuse. Katambo gathered a number of advertisements of several Namibian publications and explained many of these traditional healers are in fact a single person advertising under different names and different cell phone numbers. Eastern Bulls shreds ERA Sharoldine Bock
Eastern Bulls shredded Erongo Rugby Academy (ERA) in a 36-5 victory in a Namibia Rugby Union 1st league encounter in Walvis Bay on Saturday. Freddie Van der Merwe (2), Nikki Oteli, Eastwon Springbok, Ashlin Brandt and Adrian Du Plessis were the try scorers. Gladwin Kamies scored the only try for ERA. West Coast Sharks was scheduled for a clash against Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), but last mentioned did not turn out for the match. West Coast Sharks were automatically awarded the log points.
Social League Soccer Sharoldine Bock RMB and Coastal Uranium locked horns in the Social League soccer match at the Kuisebmond stadium on Saturday, with last mentioned winning 2-1. Haffeni Shiinda from RMB scored the first goal whilst Jorha Naruseb (Coastal Uranium) scored an equalizer four minutes after RMB's first goal. Owen Beukes of Coastal Uranium scored in the 54th minute – bagging the game 2-1 for his team. Pirates played Funky Town in their social league tie-up. Raymond Stephanus scored the only goal of the match. Pirates 1 – Funkky Town 0. Pirates moved up to second position on the log. Also on Saturday at the Kuisebmond Stadium, the Erongo Regional Team 3 took on Eleven Arrows in a preparation game for the upcoming The Namibian Newspaper Cup (14-17 April 2017). Simon Techo scored the first (and only) goal for Eleven Arrows. Anthony Kham scored Erongo's first goal. It was followed by two more goals for Erongo by Mbandja Tjahikika and Quiton Katanga. Erongo Marine Enterprises hands over N$210 000 towards hostel repair Sharlien Tjambari
Erongo Marine Enterprises handed over a cheque of N$210 000 to the Office of the Erongo Regional Governor recently on Friday, the money to be used for the repair and maintenance of several Swakopmund school hostels. Erongo Marine Enterprises pledged the money during the Namibian Newspaper Cup fundraising dinner that was hosted by the Office of the Governor. According to the Managing Director of Erongo Marine Enterprises, Dr. Martha Uumati, the money is specifically earmarked for the school hostels in Swakopmund: “so at the gala dinner when we heard about the schools and saw the presentation on the schools we, decided that this is an opportunity to actually invest and to give back. We are aware some of the hostels are in extreme need of repair and it is affecting the Namibian child”, said Dr. Uumati. According to Dr. Uumati she lived in hostel and is aware of the negative effect of deteriorated hostels on the quality of life for the children. “We would like to see our children living in conducive environments and of course also when we are hosting events such as the Namibian Newspaper Cup taking place over the Easter weekend. The players can also now live in an equally conducive
environment.” So as one of the captains of the horse mackerel industry, it is important for us that our fishing rights and the profits gained through our operations benefit not just us but the wider community”, Uumati added. “Our policy here in Erongo region is that yes we make use of the government budget, but we also go beyond the government budget. We always go out of our way to use various means to tackle the problem and address it. Some of our hostels are not well. That's why we thought let's use the money on the hostels and repair whatever we need to repair. Therefore, on behalf of the regional leadership we were really humbled by your gesture. Rest assured we will make use of that money for that specific purpose. Your contribution is really a double contribution to the Namibian Newspaper Cup and to the social upliftment of the quality of education of the Namibian child”, remarked the Governor of Erongo Clr. Indoor Soccer Festival, a success once again Piquet Jacobs
The 2nd annual Indoor Soccer Festival was held on 31 March and 1 April in enthusiastic sportsman spirit, with a total of 18 teams that entered to participate and challenge each others skills. The event was held at the Jan Wilken Indoor Complex with a roaring crowd of spectators. The League finals were between Dream Team and Western Spurs, both teams known in the game, with Dream Team winning the cup with a score of 12 - 2. Namport II and Kaiser Chiefs challenged each other in the Social finals, the game had fans on the edge of their seats, in the end Namport II walked away with the cup. The festival was started in the light to create a platform for corporate, business and social clubs to
play a sport they love, as well as to include juniors to learn and improve from experienced teams. The initiative was started by local businessman, Boeta Mouton, and former Brave Warriors player, Danzyl Bruwer, as they realized an absence of a relaxed environment for teams to socialize in the spirit of the game and to keep the sport alive. Institutions and individuals that came on board to support the sports event include JDK Logistics, Genna Du Plessis, Charlies Meat Market and HCJ Accounting Firm.
