Destruction as fire rips through shack community Mondesa's Oletweni quarter was hit by a devastating shack fire in the early morning hours of Saturday. The fire destroyed twenty shacks, but thanks to people running knocking at every door for residents to get out to a safe distance, no injuries or deaths were reported.

Swakopmund's town council some years ago set out land where all of Namibia's cultures could establish a traditional village with the aim of creating a new tourist attraction and also place where people can learn about and from one another's cultural origins. So far, only the ovaHimba traditional village has gone up in 2018. It is located next to the Martin Luther Museum at the entrance to the town. The main aim was in line with what was expected by the local authority. It was showcasing products and services as well as the ovaHimba cultural music called “Ondjongo”. Tourists and locals alike flocked to the village. In the first months after its opening in October 2018, matters started to turn for the worse.
