Kamala Harris is a proven fighter: Biden
WASHINGTON, AUG 13 (PTI): Democratic party presidential nominee Joe Biden has said his pick for the party’s vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris is smart, tough and a proven fighter for the country’s middle class. Biden, 77, made his maiden public appearance with his running mate Harris on Wednesday and said that both of them are ready to get to work in rebuilding America and a better future for its people. “Kamala, as you all know is smart. She’s tough. She’s experienced. She’s a proven fighter for the backbone of this country, the middle class, for all those who are struggling to get into the middle class. Kamala knows how to govern,” Biden said. “She knows how to make the hard calls. She’s ready to do this job on day one. And we’re both ready to get to work rebuilding this nation and building a better,” he said making a joint appearance with Harris in Wilmington. ning mate, making history by selecting the first black woman to compete on a major party’s presidential ticket. The announcement resulted in enthusiasm among the party’s base. “Yesterday we had our best grassroots funds raising day of the campaign, more than double our previous record. And in doing so, we set a single day record for online political fundraising, and I think I know why,” he said. Biden raised USD 26 million for his presidential campaign in the 24 hours that followed his
announcement on picking Harris to be his running mate. “This morning, all across the nation little girls woke up, especially the black and brown girls who so often feel overlooked and undervalued in their communities, but today just maybe they’re seeing themselves for the first time in a new way, as the stuff of a president and vice presidents,” Biden said. In her campaign and the primary, according to Biden, Harris often talked about what she referred to as the 3:00 am agenda, about moms and dads

Wellington, Aug 13 (IANS): New Zealand reported 14 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, amid a second wave of the virus resurgence in the country. A positive case in managed isolation was a woman in her 30s who arrived in New Zealand from the Philippines on August 8, reports Xinhua news agency. She has been in managed isolation at the Distinction Hotel and tested positive around day 3 of her stay, Director-General of
Health Ashley Bloomfield told a press conference. The 13 other cases were reported in Auckland and were all linked to the four people from the same family in the city previously reported, Bloomfield said. The 14 cases have brought the total number of active cases in New Zealand to 36, 17 of which are linked to the recent outbreak, he said. The country’s total number of confirmed cases reached 1,238. Auckland resumed
COVID-19 Alert Level 3 at noon on Wednesday for three days, with the rest of the country going to Level 2, after 102 days without community transmission in the country. The government will make decisions and inform people in advance of a lockdown ending on Friday midnight, said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. New Zealand reported new cases this week after 102 days without a new infection.
awake late at night in their kitchens, worried, scared, uncertain about how they were going to take care of their families, about how they’re going to pay the bills, about how they were going to make it, simply make it. “Growing up in Scranton and Claymont, Delaware, I saw that struggle with my family as well. Kamala saw it with hers as well. And millions of Americans are living that struggle as we speak, especially in this moment of crisis, especially with so many jobs lost,” he said. As the child of immigrants, Biden said, Harris knows personally how immigrant families enrich the country, as well as the challenges of what it means to grow up black and Indian American in the United States of America. “Her story is America’s story, different from mine in many particulars, but also not so different in the essentials. She has worked hard. She’s never backed down from a challenge, and she has earned each and every of the accolades and achievements
School set ablaze in Afghanistan Kabul, Aug 13 (IANS): Unknown armed men set a school ablaze in Taluqan city, the capital of Afghanistan’s Takhar province, on Thursday, a local official said. Provincial police spokesman Abdul Khalil Asir confirmed the incident to Xinhua news agency, saying: “The second floor of Abu Osman Taluqani school was completely burned due to unknown reason at around 3.30 a.m. today.” Asir also said that investigation had been initiated to determine the reason for the incident. Three other schools were set on fire in Takhar province over the past couple of years. The locals and officials have blamed Taliban militants for the incidents. But the militant group, which outlawed schools for girls and modern education for boys during its six-year reign, has denied its involvement.

comprising a permanent resident and four work pass holders. There were also six imported cases who had been placed on stay-home notices upon arrival in Singapore. On Wednesday, 800 foreign workers were quarantined after health authorities discovered a case among them in a dormitory that had been cleared of the virus. They are among about 22,800 workers who are still serving out their quarantine period. These workers will be tested when their quarantine ends, and it expects the new infection case counts to remain high in the coming days before tapering off, said MOH. The 11 imported patients reported on Wednesday comprised two Singaporeans, three work pass holders, one work permit holder, four dependant’s pass holders and one special pass holder. These patients had returned from Indonesia, India and the Philippines. Among them is a Filipino seaman holding a special pass who arrived from India on August 8 on a vessel.

SINGAPORE, AUG 13 (PTI): The first batch of volunteers aged between 21 and 55 in Singapore have received a dose of a potential coronavirus vaccine being developed in the country. Called Lunar-Cov19, the vaccine is developed by Duke-NUS Medical School and American pharmaceutical company Arcturus Therapeutics. Arcturus in a statement on Tuesday said that this first phase of the trial involved volunteers aged between 21 and 55, who were injected with a single shot of the vaccine. Data from this phase of the early-stage trial would be used to select the dosage regimens of the next phase, which will involve those aged 56 to 80, as well as younger adults. Arctur us president and chief executive Joseph Payne said that based on pre-clinical trials, its vaccine may only need to be administered once, and at a very low dose. “These favourable attributes could greatly facilitate mass vaccination campaigns necessary to control this

As attorney general of the largest state in the country, Harris took on the big banks over mortgage fraud and won, later also took on big oil when it wanted to pollute without consequences, he said. “She was a pioneer in marriage equality and tackled the gun lobby. You know, we’ve all watched her in the United States Senate go toe to toe with Trump officials trying to hide the truth, asking the tough questions that needed to be asked and not stopping until she got an answer. And when none was forthcoming, it was obvious what the answer was,” Biden said. “As a member of the Intelligence Committee and the Judiciary Committee, she’s been the center--in the middle of the most critical national security challenges our country faces, well aware, well aware of all the threats to this nation and ready to respond to them,” said the Democratic party’s presidential nominee.
