From the Editor

HELLO AND WELCOME

to the March 2025 edition of Motor Trader.

It has been an astounding few weeks with regards to the weather. In last month's edition, I commented on how depressingly familiar it was that we should see the year begin with North Queensland being struck by some terrible weather event.

This month, while we do focus on that in our story that starts on page six, I have also had to include something quite unfamiliar, reporting on a cycloneCyclone Alfred - that hit the southeast region in early March. On a personal note, this was my first experience of a cyclone and the anxiety was strong as I - and millions

of others - battened down the hatches and waited to see what Alfred would deliver. As I write this column, the now extropical cyclone is still hanging around, delivering a final dose of misery to communities that have been damaged and flooded.

To my friends and colleagues from the northern end of the state who seem so experienced with such things, I thank you for your kind words and humour over the past few days, and be assured that while there is some astonishment that a cyclone struck here, no one is forgetting there is still much to be done up there.

As always, MTA Queensland is here to assist members where and when it can. There is some useful information and links to resources on pages 10 & 11 of this edition, and please keep across updates and more information that will be sent out through our newsletter and other channels.

Cheers

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY offers an important opportunity to celebrate the remarkable contributions of women across all sectors, including the automotive industry. Through Auto Women, MTA Queensland is proud to support and empower women in the industry with resources, networking, and initiatives designed to help them thrive in their careers.

Having spent over 20 years in the automotive industry, I have witnessed firsthand the incredible women who have entered and made lasting impacts in the field. Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with The Motoring Chronicles to discuss the importance of recognising these accomplishments and continuing to drive the future for women in the industry.

On that note, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the winners of the 2024 Women in Collision Awards. I was both humbled and honoured to be recognised in the Industry Supplier Representative category, alongside MTA Queensland member Anne McClure (Owner/ Manager category) and MTA Institute apprentice Lily Welsh (Technician/Estimator category). These inspiring women are not only excelling in their careers but are also paving the way for future generations in the industry. Read more about their achievements on pages 22-23.

Nominating for industry awards is crucial - not only does it recognise individual achievements, but it also highlights the vital contributions women make daily to advance the automotive sector. If you know someone who would be a great candidate, don’t hesitate to give them the recognition they deserve!

Lastly, we are excited to announce the opening of the Auto Women Scholarships! These scholarships, proudly sponsored by MTA Queensland, Care Super, and Women and Leadership Australia, offer outstanding opportunities for women to upskill and progress in their careers. Apply now for the Leading Edge or Executive Ready scholarships HERE. We look forward to seeing more women excel and thrive in the automotive industry.

QUEENSLAND SOLDIERS ON AS FLOODS AND CYCLONE ALFRED PUMMEL THE STATE

BRISBANE AND THE SOUTHEAST BATTERED BY CYCLONE ALFRED

FOR THE FIRST few days of March, the southeast of Queensland was on high alert as Cyclone Alfred, a Category 2 storm, hovered menacingly off the coast.

More than 4 million people made preparations for Alfred making landfall sometime around March 6 and, for a few days, the heavily populated region that includes Brisbane and Gold Coast, held its collective breath.

BY THE TIME CYCLONE ALFRED REACHED

By the time Cyclone Alfred reached the mainland on March 8, its impact was already being felt. Powerful winds with gusts over 100km/h struck everywhere from northern NSW to the Sunshine Coast which, together with substantial rainfall, led to widespread damage and disruption.

More than 300,000 properties in the region experienced power outages, buildings were damaged, trees were felled, people were evacuated from homes, and rivers across the region swelled to bursting causing flooding.

Beaches on the Gold Coast were washed away, Brisbane streets were submerged and, tragically, a man lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters in northern NSW. Additionally, as resources were moved in for rescue and recovery

duties, two military trucks involved in emergency response efforts collided, resulting in injuries to 13 Australian Defence Force personnel.

It was an anxious time even if, all things considered, Alfred was not as destructive as first feared. However, Alfred was, as was noted by many, the first cyclone to make landfall in the region since 1974.

For those who have never experienced

Cyclone Alfred

the anxiety of waiting for a cyclone to hit or had a taste of even a less powerful one such as Alfred turned out to be, the experience gave an interesting perspective on what it must be like for fellow Queenslanders in the north who live with this type of event seemingly every year. It’s uncomfortable, to put it mildly.

At the time of writing, Cyclone Alfred had weakened to a Tropical Low, but it was still loitering in the region and was still dumping vast amounts of rain. The dangers of flooding still loom large.

Quite what damage Alfred has inflicted, and how severe and widespread that damage is, will be determined in the coming days and weeks but both the Queensland and Australian Governments have stepped up to initiate assistance and support. For information on what is available, click on the links at the end of this article.

ROAD TO RECOVERY: NORTH QUEENSLAND MOVES ON AS FLOOD WATERS RECEDE

In early February, North Queensland experienced a catastrophic natural disaster with prolonged heavy rainfall leading to floods there were unprecedented. The deluge, which began in late January and extended into February saw areas such as Ingham receiving almost

1.5 metres of rain fall in just three days. The Herbert River rose to 14.89 meters, approaching the record level of 15.2 meters set during Cyclone Dinah in 1967. The flooding inundated other towns including Ingham, Townsville, and Cardwell, causing devastation to homes, infrastructure, and businesses.

Many people were injured and, in dreadful news, two people were killed in the floods. Reports of outbreaks of diseases called Melioidosis and Leptospirosis have been a worrying update.

The transportation network suffered severe disruptions. The North Coast railway line, critical as a connection between Brisbane to Cairns, was badly damaged, with many sites along its route affected by washouts, scouring, culvert damages, and bridge damage. It was only on March 1 that Queensland Rail was able to report the North Coast was fully reopen to freight and passenger trains.

Roads and highways were also compromised, isolating communities and hindering emergency response efforts. The Bruce Highway – a critical artery spanning Queensland’s coastline – was put under severe stress. Notably, the collapse of the Ollera Creek Bridge, situated between Townsville and Ingham, severed a vital link, disrupting the flow of goods and

emergency services. Other sections of the highway were damaged, submerged or washed away.

For the entire region - and the communities, individuals, families and businesses that call it home - it has been a tough start to the year. For the many automotive businesses across the region, which are integral to local economies, the challenges have been significant.

Besides the obvious impacts of drowned workshops and destroyed assets and equipment, the damaged road infrastructure delayed the delivery of parts, supplies, inventory, foods and cleaning supplies. Suppliers were put under additional pressure to deliver services with plumbers, electricians and builders in high demand.

On the ground in the region is MTA Institute trainer Jason McCann. It became obvious very quickly that the impact of the weather event was going to be severe.

“On the first day of the intense rain and flooding in Townsville, it was apparent that this was turning into a serious event,” said Jason. “Many workplaces started closing and collection of kids from school was made paramount as the roads in Townsville were quickly rising with flood water. I had to change vehicles from the work Camry to my personal Toyota Hilux, just to be able to pick up my daughter from her school.

“Many low-level vehicles were becoming

waterlogged and locking and as the rainfall continued, people in low-lying areas were forced to evacuate to higher ground and emergency shelters. This was all occurring in a short timeframe.”

Many MTA Queensland members were affected by the flooding with some, said Jason, seeing a metre of water in their workshops and offices. And even for those that made it through the flooding unscathed, the closure of major highways impeded the supply of parts and other business necessities.

As always seems to be the case, however, the determination to get communities back on their feet saw people pull together.

“On the upside any weather event such as this one, is that it brings out the North Queensland spirt and strength,” said Jason. “From volunteers filling sandbags and dropping them off to the elderly and people in need, to people volunteering rooms and space for families that had to evacuate, to those making food and fuel donations for families that were cut off. There’s always a general banding together to get the job done.”

As we approach the middle of March, and with the flood waters receding and roads and rail lines reopening, the recovery across the region is now underway. There is, as there aways is in the wake of such reversal, still much to be done and MTA Queensland will continue to play its part in supporting

automotive businesses affected by the floods and be available with resources and guidance for affected businesses.

For some MTA Queensland members, a bit of luck and planning helped them survive the deluge in decent shape. For Ingham-based Guido’s Panel and Paint, being owned and run by a family with a long history in the region was a great benefit.

The late Guido Gilberto grew up in Ingham and founded the business in 1992. When the record-breaking flood of 1967 left him stranded in the upper story of his family home, the memory imprinted deeply on his psyche and when it came to build the workshop for his panel and paint business on the block of land next to his family home, Guido insisted that the facility be built a full metre above that 1967 flood level.

In 2025, three years after Guido’s passing, the family truly appreciated this foresight - they were one of the few businesses in town which did not get washed away.

In the last week of January this year, the reports of incoming rain prompted Guido’s wife Maria and their son David to mobilise the team, lifting everything they could to the workshop and high ground.

By the first weekend in February, the town was in trouble. The six-foot-high fence in front of the workshop was completely submerged. The power was cut off and access was only via boat. With customers’ cars safely high and dry, the business turned its attention to caring for

its staff and it was all hands on deck as the team pitched in to help each other move their belongings to dry ground.

Maria fell on day one of the flooding, hurting her leg badly. Some staff became homeless as their houses were inundated and management helped them to find alternative accommodation. Almost everyone lost access to electricity in the region, and David was on hand to provide generators so staff could keep the power on.

Power returned by February 10, and business resumed the next day. On that first day of resumed trading, David saw 79 local vehicles written off.

“We specialise in flood insurance claims,” he said. “Apart from assessing damaged vehicles, we spent that first week training our staff and refreshing their skills in detailing cars after a flood and how to be safe with flood-affected vehicles. One employee nearly had a nasty accident with an air bag that exploded unexpectedly.”

Having managed the business through 10 other floods, Maria strapped her damaged foot up in a moonboot and leapt into action.

“We rang MTA Queensland for HR support to make sure we were doing everything we could to look after our team,” she said. “We hired a mature-aged apprentice to handle the additional workload. We reached out to our loyal, long-standing customers to make sure they were okay and to look after their fleets of vehicles.”

With countless floods and cyclones under

Guido’s Panel and Paint, Ingham

her belt, Maria Gilberto had three tips to remain resilient in business during a disaster.

“Do your research before you open the doors. Find out where previous floods have reached and what you can do to disaster-proof your business,” said Maria. “Have some money stashed away to cover a rainy day. Being out of business for more than a week during the floods cost us more than $15,000 in wages and lost revenue. Try to have enough saved to survive the tough times and get the most comprehensive insurance you can.

“And stay connected with your team,” she added. “We stay in frequent and personal communication with our staff and our customers, so we know what they need professionally and personally.”

Like Guido’s Panel and Paint, many MTA Queensland members have reached out for support and the Association has assisted in many ways, from HR support and advice to assisting members in accessing the more than $100 million in Government-provided grants designed to assist small businesses as they rebuild. MTA Queensland continues to be ready to ensure that members have the support and information needed to navigate through these challenging times.

MTA |Q&A

Mark Rowe is the chair of Capricorn and also Vice-President of VASA, but apart from being a passionate advocate for the industry through those organisations, he is also an MTA Queensland member and has been delivering auto electrical services to Beaudesert and the surrounding communities of Southeast Queensland for nearly 30 years through his businesses, Rowe Auto Electrical and Jimboomba Batteries.

WHAT PRODUCTS AND SERVICES DO YOU OFFER AT ROWE AUTO ELECTRICAL AND JIMBOOMBA BATTERIES?

MR: We offer a wide range of auto electrical and air conditioning solutions for cars, trucks, earthmoving and agricultural equipment. Recently, in Beaudesert, we have also started offering mechanical services as well. I employed a mechanic about 12 months ago and did so because a lot of jobs now overlap. It has been a great development for us.

WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE INDUSTRY & HOW DID YOU COME TO ESTABLISH YOUR BUSINESSES?

MR: I started off as an apprentice and worked for five years with a local business in Beaudesert before they came to me one day and said they had run out of work. I went home that day to work out what I was going to do – I had a fresh mortgage – and I started the next morning working on a mate's truck. Then the phone started ringing and it went from there!

Mark Rowe, owner of Rowe Auto Electrical and Jimboomba Batteries
WHEN I AM NOT AWAY WITH CAPRICORN, I'M HANDS ON AS AN EXTRA TRADESMAN . . .

Doing it that way was never my plan, but that’s how it happened. I was mobile at first, with a workshop at home, and did that for four or five years before I moved into this location at Beaudesert.

About eight years ago, I saw an opportunity to open a battery shop at Jimboomba, and that has now grown from being a battery retail shop to a full-blown auto electrical shop.

HOW MANY STAFF DO YOU HAVE?

MR: I have 14 staff across the two shops, including four apprentices across the two stores, a manager at each shop, a mechanic, and a handful of auto electricians. It has grown a fair bit since I went out on my own.

ARE YOU STILL HANDS ON IN THE WORKSHOP AS AN AUTO ELECTRICIAN?

MR: Absolutely. Very hands on!

When I am not away with Capricorn, I'm hands-on as an extra tradesman – in fact, I did an air conditioning job and worked on a John Deere tractor just this morning.

I enjoy the work, always have done, and these businesses work perfectly to give me the flexibility to come and go as I'm needed. It’s what I enjoy doing but the Capricorn role is very exciting, a real challenge, and I love it.

IT SEEMS OBVIOUS, BUT WILL ELECTRIFICATION OF THE AUTO INDUSTRY IN THE FORM OF EVs AND HYBRIDS HAVE AN IMPACT ON YOU?

MR: Electrification is a major factor for businesses to consider. From mechanical to paint and panel, everybody's got to think about it these days.

Because we are regional here in Beaudesert we don't see a lot of EVs, but half the guys I've got here have done EV training. We can depower and repower EVs, we have all the equipment and are prepared and ready to work on them.

The arrival of EVs is exciting. It's change. It's different. And that means there are new opportunities and challenges. Workshops

MTA | Q&A

need to be prepared as EVs are going to come. It might not be as quickly as first predicted, but they will roll through.

That’s part of the reason I've employed a mechanic as I think this work is going to morph together - mechanics with some electrical knowledge or electricians with some mechanical ability. I think that will be where the EV market will end up. However, there will still be a need for separate auto electricians and mechanics for quite some time. ICE [Internal Combustion Engines] engines are going to be with us for a bit longer than first predicted.

WHAT SORT OF TRAINING IS AVAILABLE FOR YOU AND YOUR STAFF?

MR: I am big on training and keeping the guys up to date with new techniques, across the changes that are coming through, and staying on top of it all. It's good for the team environment and very important. We do that training with the MTA Institute or whoever we can use at the time. MTA Queensland’s training is second-to-none.

WHAT CHALLENGES ARE YOU FACING AS AN AUTO ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL BUSINESS?

MR: Finding skilled staff is quite challenging. There’s a real shortage. I do

I AM BIG ON TRAINING AND KEEPING THE GUYS UP TO DATE WITH NEW TECHNIQUES, ACROSS THE CHANGES THAT ARE COMING THROUGH, AND STAYING ON TOP OF IT ALL.

advertise but I usually find staff via word of mouth and they actually have approached me – they find out I am looking for someone and they turn up on my doorstep.

Having a good reputation is important, and I've got some fantastic apprentices at the moment. They are really good young men, all very enthusiastic and keen to learn, and have great attitudes.

YOU’VE BEEN A MEMBER OF CAPRICORN FOR MANY YEARS, HAVE TAKEN ON SENIOR ROLES THERE, AND ARE NOW ITS CHAIRMAN. WHY TAKE ON SUCH RESPONSIBILITY

WHILE ALSO RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESSES?

MR: I've always been a massive fan of Capricorn and what it offers. The ease of one statement, insurance needs taken care of, fuel cards – it is a great concept and I've always been very supportive of it.

In 2022, the opportunity came to become a director, and I was lucky enough that Queensland members voted for me. I took over the Chair role in October last year.

There's a lot of strategy and a lot of highend decision making at the Board level. That is exciting and there’s a lot of good things coming. Nothing I can share right now, but stay tuned!

Capricorn is the same as all automotive businesses – dealing with electrification and that uncertainty – and it has got to keep evolving to be able to keep our members informed and keep them viable. It’s an important link in the chain as Capricorn members are facing the same challenges as everyone else - staff shortages, skilled staff, the supply of parts is often slow. They are all the same challenges.

We have 30,000 members so we hold a bit of clout when we do get involved in different issues. Capricorn is a powerful beast these days.

CAPRICORN HAS BEEN WORKING WITH MTA QUEENSLAND ON THE SKILLS SHORTAGE ISSUE THROUGH CAREERS EXPOS HELD IN PARALLEL WITH CPARICORN TRADE EVENTS. HAVE THEY BEEN A SUCCESS FOR YOU?

MR: Absolutely. I’m very pleased with how

well that has gone, and I'm always bringing it up at Capricorn that Queensland is doing it better than the other states! And that's got a lot to do with Rod's [MTA Queensland CEO] drive to make these things happen.

Capricorn happily partners with them to enable these young people to come and have a look and see what's available –from selling parts to being a heavy diesel mechanic and everything in between. Feedback from Capricorn members is great and I believe we have 28 apprentices that have come through from those events.

Relationships and partnerships such as that between MTA Queensland and Capricorn - and VASA too, of which I am vice-president - are very important, and will continue to be in the future.

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU BECOME A MEMBER OF MTA QUEENSLAND, AND WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BENEFITS OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP?

MR: I became a member probably 20 years ago. It was important to be part of a bigger group and be able to get some workplace health and safety advice and so on. The flow of information, particularly with HR, is very useful because that's a changing environment and it's very hard as a small business owner - when you're worrying about customers and getting parts, when you’re having problems with apprentices

and your tradies are having dramas and so - to be across HR stuff that changes constantly. I find MTA Queensland is a very good reference point and always very helpful and ready with the correct information.

The benefits of being a member of MTA Queensland are great, plus there is a wonderful gala dinner at the end of the year!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG MARK ROWE JUST STARTING OUT IN BUSINESS IN THE INDUSTRY?

MR: As a young person starting out, you need a good accountant, you need to get some good legal advice about a structure when you set up, and you need to join MTA Queensland – lots of great information comes from them – and become a member of Capricorn!

It's important to be part of a network, especially if you're a sole trader or you've got just one member of staff, because you can feel very alone at times, and you may think the problems are just yours.

However, when you join a network, you talk to other people who have all the same problems. So, it’s important to become a member of groups that suit what you do.

AS A YOUNG PERSON STARTING OUT, YOU NEED A GOOD ACCOUNTANT, YOU NEED TO GET SOME GOOD LEGAL ADVICE ABOUT A STRUCTURE WHEN YOU SET UP, AND YOU NEED TO JOIN MTA QUEENSLAND.

DO YOU OWN A CLASSIC CAR OR IS THERE SOMETHING A LITTLE BIT SPECIAL TUCKED AWAY IN YOUR GARAGE?

MR: I do have a GTF - the last of the GT Falcons. It's 10 years old and has 1200km on it. It doesn’t get out very often!

I have no interest in selling it because it was something I always wanted - and it is just beautiful!

MTA QUEENSLAND CHAMPIONS YOUNGCARE’S 20-YEAR MISSION TO SUPPORT YOUNG AUSTRALIANS IN NEED

YOUNGCARE, THE AUSTRALIAN not-for-profit organisation, has been at the forefront of advocating for young individuals with high physical support needs since it was established in 2005. Founded by David Conry - along with Nick Bonifant, Matthew Lawson, and Simon Lockyer - the organisation emerged from a personal struggle when Conry's wife, Shevaune, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at 26, faced the prospect of living in aged care due to a lack of suitable accommodation. This experience ignited a mission to provide age-appropriate housing and care solutions for young Australians, ensuring they live with dignity and choice.

Over the years, Youngcare has made significant strides in addressing the

As it reaches its 20th anniversary, a cornerstone of Youngcare's success has been its partnerships, including with MTA Queensland.

Since 2008, MTA Queensland has been a steadfast supporter of Youngcare, recognising that its vision to provide dignified living options for young Australians with disabilities is powerful and most deserving of support.

The partnership has been visible through a number of collaborative efforts, including fundraising initiatives and awareness campaigns. For example, MTA Queensland members would know that during the annual MTA Queensland Industry Awards Gala, funds are raised to support Youngcare's projects through an auction. A bumper $13,000 was raised at that auction in 2024.

Youngcare is also a presence at the annual Motor Trades Golf Day organised by MTA Queensland, and MTA Queensland actively participates in Youngcare's events

such as the Y Women lunch.

The partnership between Youngcare and MTA Queensland is an example of how such collaborations can drive meaningful change. By leveraging MTA Queensland's network and resources, the two organisations have been able to amplify Youngcare’s message. It’s a partnership that not only enhances the lives of young individuals with high care needs but one that also fosters a culture of inclusivity and awareness within the automotive industry.

“We’re honoured to contribute to Youngcare through financial support, fundraising initiatives such as our annual Youngcare auction and encouraging our team to get involved in their community campaigns,” said Roid Camm, MTA Queensland CEO. “We believe in their mission and are excited to continue collaborating to create a more inclusive and supportive community for all. Together, we can make a real difference, ensuring that every young person with a disability has the opportunity to live life to the fullest, with dignity and independence."

The partnership with MTA Queensland will continue under new leadership at Youngcare. At the beginning of 2025, the organisation welcomed Clare Stewart

as its new CEO. Ms Stewart, who has previously served as the Mayor of Noosa Shire, brings a wealth of experience in public service and a personal connection to the cause. She takes on the role after the successful tenure of Greg Johnson.

Working with MTA Queensland has, said Ms Stewart, been very successful and the partnership would continue to be important as Youngcare works to deliver its much-needed services.

“With no recurring government funding, partnerships like this enable us to continue our work within the community. Outside of raising vital funds for young people with physical disabilities, the MTAQ partnership has given Youngcare a platform to spread awareness about the inequalities faced by young people,” said Ms Stewart.

“Now in our 20th year, Youngcare’s purpose will not waver. So, stable and continuous partnerships, such as that with MTA Queensland, are imperative in creating a future where all young people with disabilities can live the young lives they deserve.”

QUEENSLANDERS SHINE AT WOMEN IN COLLISION AWARDS

THE WOMEN IN Collision awards, organised and run by Australasian Paint and Panel magazine, took place in February, and MTA Queensland was proud to see plenty of representation from the Sunshine State amongst the finalists across all categories.

The awards recognise the contributions made by women to the collision repair industry, ensuring female leadership, ownership, skills and talent are celebrated industry wide, and particularly notable this year was the number of winners associated with MTA Queensland.

Amongst them was the Association’s Deputy CEO, Kellie Dewar, who was presented with the Industry Supplier Representative award.

With decades of experience in the automotive industry, Kellie has played a pivotal role in shaping inclusion in the industry, and the prestigious Women In Collision accolade recognised her contributions in supporting businesses, advocating for women and equality, and driving industry standards. To win the award was a proud moment for Kellie, and she encouraged more women to step up and put a spotlight on their own achievements.

“I encourage more women to put their name forward and nominate themselves

for Industry awards like Women in Collision and MTA Queensland’s Women in Industry award,” she said. “Every female in the automotive industry has impacted and influenced change within the sector,

“EVERY FEMALE IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY HAS IMPACTED AND INFLUENCED CHANGE WITHIN THE SECTOR, AND BY HIGHLIGHTING THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF WOMEN, WE CAN ENCOURAGE THE NEXT GENERATION TO GET INVOLVED.”

and by highlighting the achievements of women, we can encourage the next generation to get involved.”

Other Women in Collision award winners included Anne McClure of MTA Queensland member business McClure Refinishing in Townsville who picked up the Owner/Manager award.

Like Kellie, Anne is a passionate advocate for the inclusion of women in technical and leadership roles. Her encouragement for inclusivity extends beyond her business and includes being involved in mentorship programs for women in the industry.

Anne and Kellie were joined by Lily Welsh on the award winners’ podium. Lily, an apprentice painter with Advanced Auto Accident Repair Centre in Brisbane, has already been recognised as an outstanding talent having won the MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month award in November 2024. She picked up the top Women in Collision award in the Technician/Estimator category.

To see such a strong showing from Queensland in a national event is very heartening, and as the repair and collision sector continues to evolve, platforms such as the Women in Collision awards serve as catalysts for change, helping to dismantle previous stereotypes, paving the way for women in the automotive industry.

MTA Queensland is playing its part in this change too, introducing programs such as Auto Women. Kellie is at the forefront of this initiative, helping to create a network of professional women that foster support and connection.

Along with Auto Women and other programs and initiatives that support women in the industry, the Women in Collision awards plays an important role in highlighting just how crucial women are to the success of the automotive industry.

“Women bring immense value to the industry, and it’s vital that we create an environment where they feel encouraged and supported to embrace their contributions as the industry grows,” said Kellie. “The Women in Collision awards are an excellent platform for showcasing the incredible talent and contribution of women in the sector.”

DRIVING CHANGE IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

WOMEN WORKING IN trades and traditionally male-dominated roles are no longer exceptions; they are trailblazers, leaders, innovators, and changemakers who are shaping the future of tomorrow. These women are breaking down barriers, forging new paths, and inspiring the next generation to follow in their footsteps. However, the journey has not been easy. Historically, women have faced significant challenges when entering industries like automotive - workplace culture, gender stereotypes, a lack of role models, and limited support have long discouraged many from pursuing or obtaining careers in these fields. In fact, women currently make up just 2% of mechanics (Jobs and Skills Australia, 2024) and 8% of automotive apprentices (NCVER, 2024).

Despite these setbacks, the tide is turning. With increasing support and evolving perceptions, new opportunities are emerging to empower and uplift women in the automotive industry. Women working in trades are no longer seen as outliers but are now playing critical roles as leaders and decision-makers. These women are helping to reshape industries and inspire positive change. More and more programs and initiatives are designed to support women in pursuing these careers, helping them build the skills, networks, and confidence they need to succeed.

One such initiative is Auto Women, a program established in 2022 by the Motor

WITH A VISION TO EXPAND NATIONALLY, AUTO WOMEN IS CONTINUALLY ENHANCING ITS OFFERINGS TO SUPPORT BOTH INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES.

Trades Association of Queensland (MTA Queensland), which works to create a supportive and inclusive environment for women working across the automotive sector. Auto Women connects women in a range of fields to create a network that encourages collaboration, learning, and professional growth. The program is dedicated to empowering women to reach their full potential - whether they are just starting out or looking to advance in their careers. By offering networking events and a range of opportunities across Queensland, Auto Women is not just helping women build careers in the automotive industry but also fostering a community where they can share experiences and learn from one another.

With a vision to expand nationally, Auto Women is continually enhancing its offerings to support both individuals and businesses. Resources like mentorship programs, career development tools, and advocacy initiatives are all part of the program's efforts to create a more inclusive,

diverse workforce where women can rise to leadership roles. These efforts are particularly important given the barriers that women face in the industry, from challenges in securing senior positions to a gender pay gap that remains pervasive.

of women in the field who can access support, guidance, and comradery. This initiative is proudly supported and funded by the Queensland Government.

In August 2024, MTA Queensland introduced the Women in Trades Apprenticeship Mentoring Program, providing one-on-one mentorship support to female automotive apprentices across Queensland. In partnership with BUSY Sisters, the program delivers the guidance and resources necessary for women to thrive in their apprenticeship and offers a community of support and networking. Extending to employers of female apprentices and trainees, business owners have access to a range of tools to ensure they provide a safe, supportive, and inclusive workplace for females, ensuring women in trades can succeed. With access to monthly webinars tackling different issues such as hidden biases, self-doubt, and lack of support in the industry, apprentices, trainees, and employers can further understand the systemic setbacks women face in male-dominated fields and are provided educational resources on how to tackle them. Additionally, scheduled outreach road trips designed to connect more apprentices and mentors in Regional Queensland cast a wider support net, not only reaching more females, but fostering an even larger network

Addressing the gender pay gap is another critical focus of Auto Women. The 2022-23 Workplace Gender Equality Report revealed a 25.5% average total remuneration gender pay gap in the Repairs and Maintenance sector. This gap is driven by a higher proportion of men in leadership roles, while women are typically clustered in the middle and lower pay quartiles. To tackle this issue, MTA Queensland introduced the Auto Women Scholarship Program, which provides four scholarships annually to women in Queensland’s automotive sector. The scholarships are designed to accelerate women’s careers by offering professional development and leadership training, positioning them for senior and executivelevel roles.

This commitment to breaking down barriers extends to the growing challenge of attracting and retaining female apprentices. Research shows that more than 50% of women in trade apprenticeships fail to complete their studies, primarily due to workplace culture, systemic biases, and a lack of support. Given these obstacles, the dropout rate is higher for female apprentices compared to their male counterparts. Auto Women is addressing

these challenges head-on, offering support and creating a community where women can find encouragement, advice, and resources that help them overcome the systemic barriers in the industry.

The efforts of Auto Women are not just about improving the experiences of women in the automotive industry; they’re about creating lasting economic and social impact. The increase of women in trades has already helped improve Australia’s economy by 22% over the past 30 years (Goldman Sachs), and experts predict that increasing the number of women in trades by just 6% could add approximately $25 billion to Australia’s economy. Auto Women plays a key role in this shift, not only by empowering individual women but also by setting a new industry standard for inclusion, diversity, and equality.

Without increased female participation, industries continue to face challenges such as skills and occupation shortages.

The Queensland Future Skills Report (2024) predicts the demand for automotive technicians will grow by 14.2% by 2025-26, however, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA, 2018) highlights that Australia’s aging population will lead to a decrease and fall in the number of technicians by 2.6%. To mitigate this reduction, businesses must expand their skills and trade pools to continue to meet the demand for technicians. By fostering an inclusive environment, the industry can draw from a larger pool of applicants and apprentices who positively contribute to the skills shortages and overall health of the industry.

MTA Queensland is dedicated to creating an automotive industry that is not only skilled but also diverse, inclusive, and supportive of women at every level. Through initiatives like Auto Women, the organisation is building a future where women in automotive trades are given every opportunity to succeed, whether through mentorship, scholarships,

or networking events. By fostering an environment of support and inclusion, Auto Women is helping to drive a more inclusive and thriving automotive industry.

HIGH IMPACT: HOW TRADEMUTT AND ITS FUNKY SHIRTS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN MENTAL HEALTH

IT’S A SCENE that is becoming a little more common every day – amidst the sea of high-vis vests at a bustling workshop or construction site, warehouse, factory or mining site, there’s someone wearing something with an extra splash of colour and wild design that catches the eye. A closer look reveals a tradie, donned in one of the most vibrant work shirts you’re ever likely to see.

What that tradie is wearing is a legit work shirt. This is not some fancy bit of fashion that is wildly inappropriate for a work site. This is a fit-for-purpose, rugged bit of clothing.

It is not, however, an ordinary piece of workwear. This is a TradeMutt shirt - a fusion of function and flamboyance designed for the dual purpose of being solid, robust work gear while also being so unusual to the eye that people have to talk about it.

And that is the real purpose of these shirts - they are ‘conversation starters.’ They are a signal that the wearer is ready and willing to break the silence around a topic of great importance - one that is as widespread and sinister in the blue-collar world in which TradeMutt moves as it is in any other section of our community.

That topic is mental health.

The brainchild of a pair of Queenslandbased carpenters, Daniel Allen and Edward Ross, TradeMutt was founded in 2018 and it is, perhaps, not a surprise to learn that a

company whose purpose is to shine a light on mental health issues has its origins in a very dark place.

IN THE BEGINNING

Dan and Ed met on a Brisbane construction site in 2014. Dan was a qualified carpenter and Ed his apprentice and the two quickly bonded, forming an enduring friendship.

Their shared experience as tradesmen exposed them to the many challenges faced by workers in the construction industry, including mental health, and the loss of one of Dan's close friends to suicide in 2015 deeply affected both men.

In the months that followed, the pair struggled to come to terms with what had happened and thought long and hard about what might be done to prevent such

a tragedy happening again.

Their thoughful analysis of how the topic of mental health was being tackled in the work environments they knew highlighted something to them - that conversations around mental health, as serious a subject as it is, could be too serious.

Opening up and talking was clearly a good thing but mental health is not a subject that can easily be broached.

But Dan and Ed wanted people to start talking. They wanted to make those conversations less awkward, less forced. They needed to find a way to break down barriers and have those conversations start naturally. That’s when the idea of making bold shirts that could become conversation starters began to form.

“Our angle was to try to take a bit more of a colourful, fun and light-hearted

approach to get conversations rolling about the things that we all deal with,” said Dan. “. . . broadly, socially, and culturally, we just wanted to kind of bring down the barriers. We all go through things. Let's not pretend that we don't.”

While it is often said that blokesespecially blokes - don’t talk about their feelings and that somehow it is frowned upon should they do so, Dan and Ed felt sure that this was not really the case.

“I think that has been the observation . . . but, actually, blokes do talk. In fact, when they're given the right environment to talk, you can't shut them up!” said Dan. “I guess that's what we wanted to do - create that environment where people feel empowered to talk.”

By 2018, the idea of the bright, conversation-starting shirts had come a long way. Dan and Ed had sunk $30,000 of their own money into building some assets around business development, had bought a couple of computers, had begun building a website, and had invested in what they

hoped would be the first of many batches of work shirts - 1500 in total.

For a couple of tradies with little business experience, it had been hard work getting to this point. Now they had to consider launching their product.

Marketing and PR is an important part of the success of any business, but to where do a couple of chippies turn to make the big noise and marketing splash they needed?

A dash of luck, a sprinkle of good fortune, and a good dollop of boldness would be the solution.

On a fateful day in 2018, Dan and Ed, each wearing one of the only two TradeMutt shirts in existence, were down the pub and began to field some questions from curious customers about what they were wearing.

“One of the six people who came up to us to ask about the shirts was an editor from a local Brisbane magazine, and he said he’d love to do a story on it,” said Dan.

“That was going to run as a print article, but then Channel Seven got hold of it before it went to print and they called us and said, ‘This is really cool, we'd love to put you on the news’.”

And that was that. The news item was the splashy announcement that they had unknowingly been looking for, and Dan and Ed quickly followed up on their good luck. They pulled the trigger on the barely finished website and made some urgent phone calls to the shirt manufacturer to arrange some final details around what was needed to make those first 1500 shirts,

available in just three designs, available to order.

Any anxiety the two may have had about TradeMutt’s prospects as a healthy business and social enterprise, were quickly put to rest. The interest in their story and what they were trying to do led to a deluge of phone calls and sales in the wake of that Channel Seven broadcast.

“We were cash flow positive from that $30,000 investment after just two days,” said Dan. “And then we were just off and racing from that point.”

By 2020, TradeMutt the brand, the shirts, and the ‘conversation starter’ concept was well established and Dan and Ed, eager to make the brand even more useful to those who needed help, took the decision to move beyond the goal of triggering conversations.

Using the weight and influence that the TradeMutt name now carried, they looked to develop a means of delivering direct support services for those requiring mental health support.

While they could have just funnelled some money into an existing mental health support service, their intention was to do something more meaningful than that and so they established TIACS, a free mental health support service offering professional counselling via text and call. Operating Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 10:00pm, the service is designed to ensure that blue-collar workers, uncertain of where they might turn for such support, can get the help they need.

TIACS would be, Dan and Ed decided,

at Gold Coast Collision Centre (below) and Newman Mechanical (right)

a service that offered support that is sustained and available over time to guide someone out of trouble.

Funded through a combination of 50 per cent of TradeMutt's profits along with community and partnership donations, TIACS provides counselling without the need for a referral, making it truly accessible.

“Creating TIACS was our effort to really make sure that we could achieve the outcomes that we set out to achieve, rather than putting it in the hands of another organisation . . .” said Dan. “So we created TIACS as an accessible, confidential, support service and counselling service where people can actually connect with a professional counsellor and speak with that same person right the way throughout their journey.”

TIACS has been a resounding success. Recent data shows just how much good work is being done and how vital it is.

“On average, people are having four to five sessions with our counsellors at the moment,” said Dan. “That means they're really engaging in the process, and that gives us a lot of confidence that that our model of care is sound . . .

“For Quarter 2 of this financial year we've had 543 new clients. The average age of those reaching out currently is 26 to 35 . . . and 75 per cent of those callers were male. So that data indicates to us that it's working and indicates that men do talk.

“The other data point is that for Quarter 2, 55 per cent of people who have reached out to TIACS have done so after either having a conversation with someone in a TradeMutt shirt, having a conversation in a workplace, or having a conversation with friends and family," added Dan. "So, there's really, really strong indicators that people are talking about mental health at a social level, are sharing the facts about TIACS, and people are reaching out because of that. That's awesome for us. Everything for us is dependent on that connection in that conversation and then following through for professional support. So, there are some really good signs.”

PARTNERSHIP WITH MTA QUEENSLAND

TradeMutt and TIACS' success has seen it reach out into a number of blue-collar industries. Recently, partnering with MTA Queensland has seen the launch of a custom

automotive-themed work shirt. The shirt includes the slogan ‘Don't Shut the Bonnet on It,’ a clever play on words that encourages open discussions about mental health.

With tens of thousands of people working in automotive in Queensland, the partnership is a way for both TradeMutt and MTA Queensland to offer real, quality support to a large and critical industry.

“We are proud to partner with TradeMutt to create a product that benefits the wider automotive community,” said Rod Camm, MTA Queensland CEO. “We want every person across the industry to get involved and wear these outrageously funky shirts every Friday to encourage meaningful conversation. Mental health is a vital issue, particularly in the blue-collar sector and through this collaboration, we aim to foster a culture of openness and support.”

TradeMutt exemplifies how innovative thinking and personal experiences can drive meaningful social change. By transforming standard workwear into conversation starters, Dan and Ed have not only built a successful business but also created a platform that challenges the stigma surrounding mental health in blue-collar industries. Their efforts, including the development of TIACS and strategic partnerships like that with MTA Queensland, are making a difference, and it is a very welcome one indeed.

“When we originally created this thing, the concept was that when you wear a TradeMutt shirt, you take on

the responsibility to act with empathy, compassion, and always take a nonjudgmental approach to any of the conversations that you end up in," said Dan. "Because no matter who you are, no matter what you do, no matter what environment you find yourself in and what conversation you find yourself in, every single one of us is going through something . . . we’re all dealing with life’s situational stresses, individually or, sometimes, many at one time.

"Wearing a TradeMutt shirt basically acknowledges that we are all human . . . and by wearing this shirt, you're sending a clear signal that you're happy to have a conversation, be open and talk with anyone that you might come into contact with.”

So, remember, when you see those TradeMutt shirts, have a chat and ‘Don’t Shut the Bonnet On It.’

BMW UNVEILS 800V ELECTRIC DRIVE SYSTEM FOR NEUE KLASSE

BMW HAS REVEALED its sixth-generation eDrive technology (Gen6) - featuring 800V architecture - that will power its upcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicles (EVs). The company showcased the innovation at the Tech Days event in Landshut, providing insights into its new high-voltage battery, electric motor systems, and next-generation drive units. The first Neue Klasse model is set for series production later this year.

At the core of Gen6 is a new highvoltage battery system that the company says improves charging speed by 30 per cent and extends range by 30 per cent compared to its predecessor. The new cylindrical cells offer 20 per cent greater energy density than the previous prismatic cells. A “cell-to-pack” design eliminates unnecessary modules, allowing for better integration into vehicle architecture, while a “pack-to-open-body” concept turns the battery into a structural component of the car.

BMW’s bidirectional charging capability is now standard.

A key innovation is the BMW Energy Master, a central control unit mounted on the high-voltage battery. BMW says that this intelligent system manages

power distribution between the battery, electric motor, and vehicle electronics. The Energy Master enables real-time remote software upgrades, improving efficiency and safety over time.

BMW’s Gen6 eDrive system integrates both electrically excited synchronous motors (EESM) and asynchronous motors (ASM) for improved efficiency and flexibility.

EESM motors generate their magnetic field using electric currents rather than permanent magnets. ASM motors, used in front-axle applications, are more compact and cost-efficient. BMW says that its modular motor system allows BMW to offer different configurations, from singlemotor RWD setups to quad-motor AWD performance models.

A new inverter system now runs on 800V technology with silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors, improving energy efficiency and reducing power losses. With its lighter, more efficient, and scalable Gen6 eDrive system, BMW says the Neue Klasse will introduce a 20 per cent gain in overall efficiency, setting new benchmarks for range, performance, and sustainability.

STELLANTIS REVEALS STLA AUTODRIVE

STELLANTIS HAS INTRODUCED STLA AutoDrive 1.0, its first in-house developed automated driving system, designed to offer SAE Level 3 autonomy with HandsFree and Eyes-Off capabilities. The system is a key part of Stellantis' vehicle intelligence strategy, alongside STLA Brain (advanced electrical/electronic and software architecture, serving as the central nervous system for their next-generation vehicles) and STLA Smart Cockpit (next-generation digital interface designed to seamlessly integrate vehicle occupants' digital lives with their in-car experience).

Stellantis says STLA AutoDrive allows drivers to temporarily disengage from driving tasks in traffic conditions up to 60km/h. Ideal for stop-and-go urban commutes, it gives drivers the freedom to relax and, perhaps, make time behind the wheel into a productive experience.

MERCEDES-BENZ ROAD TESTING SOLID-STATE BATTERY

MERCEDES-BENZ HAS IS testing a solid-state battery-powered vehicle. Developed in collaboration with Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) and Factorial Energy, the prototype battery system, integrated into a modified EQS, began road testing in February 2025.

COMPARED

TO A

STANDARD EQS BATTERY, MERCEDESBENZ SAYS THE SOLID-STATE VERSION ENABLES 25 PER CENT MORE RANGE AT THE SAME WEIGHT AND SIZE.

Solid-state batteries are considered a game-changer for EVs. They replace conventional liquid electrolytes with solid ones, which enhances safety, efficiency, and energy density. Mercedes-Benz says the technology can offer up to 450Wh/ kg of energy density—significantly outperforming traditional lithium-ion batteries. This advancement allows for lighter, more compact battery packs while increasing driving range.

Compared to a standard EQS battery, Mercedes-Benz says the solid-state version enables 25 per cent more range at the same weight and size. This could push the

vehicle's range beyond 1000km per charge, far exceeding the current EQS 450+, which has a maximum range of 800km with a 118kWh battery. With road tests now underway, Mercedes-Benz aims to validate the performance and longevity of its solidstate battery. Over the coming months, the company says that lab and on-road evaluations will refine the technology, enabling its future integration into production EVs.

RENAULT MAKES FIREMAN ACCESS INNOVATION AVAILABLE TO THE GLOBAL AUTO INDUSTRY

RENAULT GROUP HAS announced that its Fireman Access system - a patented safety feature for electric vehicles (EVs) - is now available to the global automotive industry under a free licensing policy.

Renault says the system is designed to enable emergency responders to extinguish EV battery fires within minutes and is technology that is based on a simple yet effective mechanism in which a special adhesive disc is placed over an opening in the EV battery casing. In the case of a fire, firefighters can direct a high-pressure water jet at the disc, which dislodges it and drenches the battery cells. Water cools the cells, preventing thermal runaway—a phenomenon that causes EV battery fires to reignite even after initial suppression.

“FIREMAN ACCESS IS A PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATION OF WHAT CAN BE ACHIEVED BY COMBINING OUR EXPERTISE AS A MANUFACTURER WITH THE SKILLS OF THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO KEEP US SAFE EVERY DAY . . .”

Renault says the system can see a fire can extinguished in just a few minutes, rather than several hours.

Renault Group says it has already integrated Fireman Access into all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles sold under its Renault, Dacia, Alpine, and Mobilize brands worldwide.

“Innovating to improve road safety is part of who we are at Renault. We're particularly proud of the partnership developed with the fire services in recent years,” said Luca De Meo, Renault CEO in a statement. “Fireman Access is a practical demonstration of what can be achieved by combining our expertise as a manufacturer with the skills of the men and women who keep us safe every day. I'm delighted to be making this innovation freely available, because when it comes to a subject like safety, we need to break down all the barriers . . . "

The company says that automakers and parts suppliers can now obtain a free licence through an open collaborative platform and, in return, any future enhancements to the system must be shared with the community, fostering a collective approach to safety.

MTAA CALLS FOR ACCC TO BLOCK INSURANCE MERGERS AND STRENGTHEN INDUSTRY REGULATION

THE MOTOR TRADES

Association of Australia (MTAA) and the Australian Motor Body Repairers Association (AMBRA) are calling on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to reject two proposed insurance mergers and introduce stronger regulations to protect competition in the vehicle insurance and repair industry.

The ACCC is currently reviewing Allianz’s acquisition of RAA Insurance, and Insurance Australia Group’s acquisition of RACQ, seeking feedback on their potential impact on market competition. MTAA strongly opposes both deals, arguing they will lead to greater insurer dominance, reducing consumer choice, increasing costs, and putting pressure on repair businesses.

MTAA warns that a more consolidated insurance market will not only drive up repair costs and premiums but also limit access to high-quality repairs. It argues that these acquisitions offer no tangible benefits to the industry or consumers but will further entrench insurer dominance.

The organisation also highlights that current state-based regulations are inadequate, with penalties too low to deter unfair insurer practices.

The MTAA is calling on the ACCC to reject these acquisitions and introduce a robust regulatory framework by strengthening the Motor Vehicle Insurance

and Repair Industry (MVIRI) Code of Conduct to protect the industry and ensure a fair, competitive market for all stakeholders.

"Without stronger oversight, insurers will continue to dictate repair practices, creating an unfair playing field that hurts small businesses and limits consumer choice. The ACCC has a critical role to play in ensuring a fair, transparent, and competitive insurance and repair industry,” said Matt Hobbs, CEO of MTAA.

“A nationally enforced Code of Conduct with real penalties is essential to holding insurers accountable and protecting the livelihoods of thousands of repairers across Australia."

To protect industry competition, MTAA is urging the ACCC to:

• Expand its oversight to monitor and prevent anti-competitive behaviour in the insurance sector.

• Mandate nationwide enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry (MVIRI) Code of Conduct.

• Implement stronger penalties and oversight mechanisms.

MTAA and its members are actively engaged in the MVIRI Code review, pushing for clearer dispute resolution, defined assessment timelines, and enforceable sanctions to safeguard repairers and consumers.

TOYOTA DISCONTINUES GRANVIA PEOPLE MOVER IN AUSTRALIA Auto news

TOYOTA AUSTRALIA HAS announced the discontinuation of the Granvia premium people mover, citing changing consumer preferences and new regulatory requirements. The decision follows a decline in demand for people movers, which now account for just one per cent of new vehicle sales in the country.

The move came in February as Toyota evaluated the impact of Australian Design Rule (ADR) 98/00, a new regulation that took effect on March 1st. Initially, the company planned to upgrade the Granvia to meet these requirements but ultimately decided against it due to low sales, market shifts, and the complexity of production updates.

“The people mover segment makes up just one per cent of the total market with buyers gravitating towards large SUVs. In the end we couldn’t make a compelling business case for continuing with the vehicle,” said Sean Hanley, Toyota Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations. “We apologise to any customers inconvenienced by this decision.”

“THE PEOPLE MOVER SEGMENT MAKES UP JUST ONE PER CENT OF THE TOTAL MARKET WITH BUYERS GRAVITATING TOWARDS LARGE SUVS.”

The discontinuation is effective immediately, with final deliveries set for March.

The Granvia, introduced in late 2019, was available in six- and eight-seat configurations with a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine, targeting high-end hospitality, family, and corporate buyers. Despite its premium positioning, it only attracted around 1,000 buyers in Australia.

ADR CHANGES MARK SHIFT IN MODEL AVAILABILITY IN AUSTRALIAN MARKET

ON MARCH 1, 2025, Australia saw significant updates to its Australian Design Rules (ADRs) with the introduction of ADR 98/00, mandating that all new vehicles sold in the country be equipped with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems. This aims to enhance road safety by ensuring vehicles can autonomously detect and prevent potential collisions with other cars.

The introduction of ADR 98/00 has prompted automakers to reassess their vehicle offerings in the Australian market. Models lacking compliant AEB systems face discontinuation unless manufacturers invest in necessary upgrades. Some manufacturers have determined that such an investment is not worth it, and that decision has seen several popular models withdrawn from the local market.

systems, future regulations are set to expand these requirements. Starting in August 2026, ADR 98/01 will mandate car-topedestrian AEB systems in all new vehicles.

While these regulatory advancements align Australia with global safety benchmarks, particularly those established in Europe, they present challenges for manufacturers, including increased production costs. Consumers can anticipate a shift in available vehicle options, with a possible reduction in budget-friendly models as manufacturers prioritise compliance with stringent safety standards.

It has been reported that models from Suzuki - such as the Ignis, Swift Sport, Vitara, and S-Cross are being phased out; and that the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport off-roader and Eclipse Cross SUV are also set to exit the market. Fiat’s petrolpowered variants of the Fiat 500 and Abarth models will go too, while certain LDV models, including the V80 van, will be discontinued. Mahindra’s Pik-Up utility vehicle is also reportedly among those being withdrawn from the Australian market. Toyota Australia has decided that its Granvia people mover will not be part of its future plans (see page 47).

The local discontinuation of these models underscores the challenges automakers face in adapting to evolving safety regulations. For some manufacturers, especially those with models in the latter stages of their product cycles, the investment required to upgrade safety systems may not be economically viable.

While ADR 98/00 primarily addresses car-to-car AEB

In December 2024, the Australian Government announced it would commence a review of the Australian Design Rules with this independent review set to analyse ADRs and assess their alignment with international standards to identify opportunities for improvement and for the removal of unnecessary barriers.

The review will include considering how the adoption of internationally harmonised ADRs can support:

• choice and price outcomes for consumers,

• productivity and technology innovation in the vehicle and related sectors, and

• the net zero transition.

The Government said it will also consider how the process of adopting international standards into ADRs can be streamlined to reduce timeframes.

The road vehicle industry, unions, road safety advocates and other stakeholders were invited to have their say as part of the review process with submissions open until 24 January 2025. A specific publication date for the review's findings has yet to be announced.

Despite the addition of hybrid technology, Ford says the Ranger PHEV maintains full off-road capability, including a mechanical transfer case for all-wheel power distribution. The 4WD system,

inherited from the V6 Turbo Diesel Ranger, features a 2-speed transfer case with driving modes: 2H, 4A, 4H, and 4L. There’s a locking rear differential and the vehicle also incorporates regenerative braking.

Fuel efficiency is a standout feature, with Ford claiming consumption of 2.9 litres/100km. A Sport mode, derived from the Ranger Raptor, optimises power delivery and throttle response for performance-oriented driving.

Included on the Ranger PHEV is Pro Power Onboard, a system that offers up to 6.9kW of power through three outlets—one 10amp, 2.3kW socket in the cabin, and two 15-amp, 3.45kW sockets in the tray. Ford says this enables users to power tools, camping gear, and even caravans without requiring a separate generator. The system

remains functional even when the vehicle is locked or charging, and if the battery depletes, the petrol engine takes over to maintain power supply.

EV DRIVE MODES

The Ranger PHEV allows drivers to choose from four distinct EV Drive Modes, providing flexibility based on driving needs:

1. Auto EV – The vehicle automatically switches between petrol and electric power to optimise performance and efficiency.

2. EV Now – The Ranger operates solely on battery power for maximum fuel savings.

3. EV Later – Prioritises petrol power to conserve battery charge for later use.

4. EV Charge – Uses the petrol engine as a generator to recharge the battery.

The Ranger PHEV boasts a 3,500kg braked towing capacity. Additionally, it offers 973kg payload capacity. Advanced towing features include a Trailer Light Check (standard across all variants) and Pro Trailer Back-Up Assist (optional on Sport, standard on Wildtrak and Stormtrak). The Gross Combined Mass (GCM) for the Ranger PHEV is 6,580kg.

The Ranger PHEV introduces several

design modifications tailored to its hybrid nature:

• Loadbox Design: The PHEV’s tray is slightly longer than its diesel counterparts, exceeding 1,600mm in length and accommodating two European-sized pallets.

• Charge Port: Located on the passenger side, marked with a debossed lightning bolt, featuring an automatic lock during charging.

• Electronic Fuel Filler Release: Since the petrol engine may remain unused for extended periods, the fuel filler is locked until a button is pressed to purge vapors before refueling.

• Wider Wheels & Bespoke Tyres: Specifically developed to handle the increased load from the battery while maintaining handling performance.

• Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS): Emits an external sound at low speeds to alert pedestrians, ensuring safety in silent EV operation.

The Ranger PHEV range is pretty packed with features. The entry-level XLT’s standard exterior elements include a black grille, steel

underbody protection, and side steps, while 17-inch alloy wheels come with all-season tyres, with an all-terrain option available. Inside, the XLT is equipped with dual-zone climate control, a 12-inch LCD touchscreen, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The premium cloth seats offer an 8-way manual driver adjustment. Theres’s smart keyless entry and push-button start. Safety features include adaptive cruise control, blindspot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and autonomous emergency braking (AEB).

Building on the XLT, the Ranger PHEV Sport adds LED headlamps, LED fog lamps, and puddle lamps. The exterior features a

dark accent grille, sports bar, and dual front tow hooks. There are 18-inch alloy wheels.

The interior sees enhancements such as pull-out cup holders, privacy glass, and wireless phone charging. Seating is

upgraded with leather accents, an 8-way power driver seat, and heated front seats. Additional driver assistance features include Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Traffic Sign Recognition, and Lane Centring.

The Ranger PHEV Wildtrak offers Matrix LED headlamps, auto high beam, and a signature Wildtrak front grille. There’s molded sports bar and roof rails and unique 18-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, Wildtrak gains ambient lighting, rear floor mats, and a 10-speaker B&O audio system. The 8-way power driver and passenger seats are wrapped in unique Wildtrak leather trim. Added driver assistance includes a 360-degree camera and Pro Trailer Back-Up Assist.

The range-topping Ranger PHEV Stormtrak introduces an exclusive Chill Grey color option, a gloss black grille with honeycomb pattern, and Stormtrak badging. Gloss black hood lettering and a rear bumper complete the look.

The Stormtrak features exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels with Chill Grey accents and a full-size spare. The load box is enhanced with a Flexible Rack System and Cargo Management System. Inside, there are Stormtrak seats with Chill Grey accents, gloss black details, and AUX switches. Pricing for the Ranger PHEV range sees the XLT coming in at $71,990, the Sport at $75,990, the Wildtrak at $79,990, and the Stormtrak at $86,990.

NEW VEHICLE SALES FALL IN FEBRUARY BUT INTEREST IN HYBRIDS CONTINUES TO GROW

AUSTRALIA RECORDED 94,993

new vehicle sales during February, a drop of 9.6 per cent on the same month last year, according to VFACTS data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

Sales in Queensland fell 10.1 per cent to 20,202 from February 2024. Sales in the ACT were down 16.2 per cent to 1,460; NSW was down 6.7 per cent to 29,801; Northern Territory decreased by 0.9 per cent to 863; South Australia decreased by 3.7 per cent to 6,215; Tasmania fell 18.6 per cent to 1,479; Victoria was down 13 per cent to 24,733 and Western Australia decreased 9.5 per cent to 10,240.

The strong consumer preference for SUVs (60.4 per cent) and Light Commercial Vehicles (22.5 per cent) continued while sales in the passenger vehicle (13.5 per cent) segment declined.

However, FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber, said the industry was increasingly concerned at the rate of total battery electric vehicle sales which recorded just 5.9 per cent of total sales, compared with 9.6 per cent in February 2024.

According to data from the Electric Vehicle Council sales report – which has information on Tesla and Polestar model sales – Tesla managed 1592 sales in February 2025. That’s down from 5665 in February last year.

While all-electric sales look a bit wobbly, Australians’ interest in hybrids continues to soar. Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) sales both grew substantially over February 2024 with hybrid sales reaching 15,348 in February 2025, up from 11,391 last

HYBRID AND PLUG-IN HYBRID (PHEV) SALES BOTH GREW SUBSTANTIALLY OVER FEBRUARY 2024

. . .

year, and PHEV sales booming to 4,871 in February this year, up from 1,092 last year.

“We are now two months into the Government’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, and while the supply of battery electric vehicles has risen dramatically, consumer demand has fallen by 37 per cent this year compared with the first two months of 2024,” said Mr Weber in a media release.

“We knew the supply of EVs would increase and there are now 88 models supplied to the Australian market. However, our grave concern has always been the rate of EV adoption and what assumptions the Government had made in its modeling around consumer demand for EVs in the NVES. This modelling remains secret.

“The easy part is to set aspirational targets but without consumers demanding EVs, the NVES will not succeed. It is time for the Government to consider the realities faced by consumers,” Mr Weber said.

Toyota was the market leader in February 2025 with sales of 18,832 during February, followed by Mazda (8,797), Kia (6,707), Ford (6,337) and Mitsubishi (6,119).

The Toyota RAV4 was Australia’s top selling vehicle with sales of 4,405 followed by the Ford Ranger (4,040), Toyota HiLux (3,616), Toyota Prado (2,723) and the Mitsubishi Outlander (2,385).

CHANGES TO CASUAL EMPLOYMENT COMMENCED 26 FEBRUARY 2025

THE RULES ABOUT Casual

Employment with new conversion pathways commenced on 26 February 2025.

Eligible casuals can now provide written notice to their employer to change from casual to full-time or part-time employment under the new employee choice pathway introduced by the government’s “Closing the Loopholes” workplace relations changes.

Casual conversion is nothing new. Starting from 26 February 2025, the new pathways shift the initiative for conversion to the employee instead of employer.

However, casuals employed by small businesses (with less than 15 employees) before 26 August 2024 will not be eligible to access the new employee choice pathway until 26 August 2025. The previous casual conversion provisions continue to apply for eligible employees until 26 August 2025.

To help employers and employees comply with the changes, MTA Queensland has released a new template that can be used by employees when they want to notify their employer that they want to change to permanent employment. An employer can only refuse the notice under certain reasons. MTA Queensland also published a template employers can use to respond to an employee's notice to change to permanent employment.

In addition, a reminder that employers must give every new employee certain Information

statements when they start work. The Casual Employment Information Statement must be provided at set times throughout a casual’s employment.

INDUSTRY REPRESENTATION TO GOVERNMENT

MTA Institute News

WELL, WE’RE

OFF to a blistering start to 2025. All our school programs have commenced, along with our pre-vocational course at the institute, and all our trainers are busily delivering training to trainees and apprentices around the state.

Last month, I expanded on one of the exciting 2025 prospects being our deeper school engagement via VETiS programs to provide a pipeline of new talent to meet industry’s current and future workforce needs.

This month I can elaborate on plans to expand our physical presence into the regions. With around 3,000 students across Queensland, our aspiration is to have training capabilities in the form of classrooms and workshop space in every major region across the State. We’ve had to start somewhere, so we are actively exploring purchasing/leasing a commercial property in Townsville.

Employers and students located outside the greater Brisbane area are fully dependent on MTA trainer/assessors to conduct all training and assessment activities within their workplaces. Although we’ve successfully managed this arrangement thus far, our ambition is to provide a consistent and uniform service across the entire state.

It is evident, from both industry insights and our practical experience, that although businesses tend to favour the workplace-delivery model, there are numerous advantages to removing students from the workplace to facilitate

their training. This approach is especially relevant during the advanced phases of apprenticeships, where the subjects become increasingly intricate and demand a greater level of detail. Such complexity necessitates substantial preparation, time, and resources from all involved parties to ensure effective learning outcomes. That said, the MTA Institute will still stand for delivery of apprenticeship training in the workplace. That is what differentiates our training model and it is what industry is looking for.

Regional facilities will also allow us to provide a suite of courses like we do out of our Brisbane location, including Auto Ready, the pre-employment, pre-vocational program for school students, and posttrade training such as air conditioning and Electric Vehicle training.

This is an exciting time as we expand into the regions providing equitable services across the state.

At the time of writing this column, Cyclone Alfred is nearing Brisbane and the southeast of the state. Hopefully, it won’t be too problematic and, as you read these words, we have all come out the other side unscathed. Stay Safe.

Apprentice of the Month: February 2025

The MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month is proudly sponsored by CareSuper

APPRENTICE:

MATTHEW WILKINS

WORKPLACE:

ADVANCED AUTO ELECTRICS & MECHANICAL

APPRENTICESHIP: AUTO ELECTRICAL

is the MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month for February 2025.

The 20-year-old is in the third year of his auto electrical apprenticeship and works for Angelo and Teena De Maria at Advanced Auto Electrics & Mechanical in Innisfail.

An outstanding employee, Matthew has, his employer said, proved himself to be an indispensable member of the team, always first to work and last to leave and always willing to give a hand to anyone who needs it.

As a student, Matthew is proving to be equally impressive. “Matthew is an outstanding apprentice,” said his MTA Institute trainer Antony Joslin. “He is self-motivated in his learning and practical work . . . has grown in confidence during the course of his apprenticeship and is constantly improving his skills and knowledge through myself and Angelo . . .”

While Matthew started his automotive career early - taking on a part-time school-based apprentice before joining Advanced Auto Electrics full time in 2023 - becoming an auto electrician was not something he has always seen himself doing. His ambition was, at one time, to go to university to study and, as a truly outstanding cricketer, perhaps pursue a career as a sportsman. While that pathway is still open to him, a growing interest in automotive drew him in the direction of auto electrical.

“Up until Grade 9, I had always thought I wanted to go to university,” said Matthew, “I got a scholarship with Ipswich Grammar to play cricket but after I went down there, I decided that I didn’t want to go to uni and came home.

“Dad is a diesel fitter and I had often helped out with that, but I had always liked the electrical side more as there was something different every day.”

Matthew’s family has a long relationship with Angelo and

Teena at Advanced Auto Electrics, so when Matthew expressed an interest in the work, the match-up was an easy one to make. He soon found himself working at the shop every school holiday until the opportunity for the apprenticeship came along.

Since then, Matthew has been in the thick of it. Advanced Auto Electrics & Mechanical offers a broad range of services on a wide range of vehicles and machinery and delivers those services at its workshop in Innisfail and on-site at locations from Cairns to Tully. The business works on trucks, tractors, cars, excavators and more and Matthew works closely with Angelo – a 35-year veteran of the industry – every day, be it in the workshop or out on the road at sites including farms, quarries, wharves, and mines.

Add in the training delivered by the MTA Institute, and Matthew couldn’t be receiving a more rounded and comprehensive apprenticeship program. And the breadth of work is what makes the job so interesting, said Matthew, “I like it all,” he said. “Especially fitouts, when everything is tidy, and diagnosing - especially when it’s an in-depth diagnosis. That is very satisfying.”

But what about cricket? Matthew really is a top-class player. An opening batsman, he has a gift for smacking a cricket ball and racking up big scores. And that skill has seen him rise through the many levels of state cricket so that, in 2023, he was picked for the Queensland U19 team – the first player from north Queensland in 20 years to be so honoured – and in 2024 he was picked to play for the Australian Country Cricket side.

While he is clearly a tremendously gifted player, Matthew is not putting his long-term career hopes into the sport. Not yet.

“If I wanted to go further, I’d probably have to move to Brisbane,” he said. “When I went down there for school, I didn’t really like it . . . so I’m not sure.”

What he is sure about is that he will finish his apprenticeship, stay with Advanced Auto Electrics & Mechanical, and then see where things lead.

“I’ll see how things pan out,” he said. “. . . but the biggest thing is that you have to be happy, and I am very happy here.

MAKING CONNECTIONS: MEET & GREET EVENTS BRINGING TALENT & EMPLOYERS TOGETHER

ON FEBRUARY 27, MTA

Queensland had the pleasure of hosting an automotive-specific Employer/Jobseeker Meet & Greet event, held at Aspley Hornets Football Club on Brisbane’s north side. This is the third such event the Associations has hosted, and it won’t be the last - more on that shortly.

So, how does it work? We bring our employers together with people that have shown an interest in a career in the automotive industry in what could best be described as a “speed dating” afternoon.

At Aspley, we had 38 jobseekers and 29 Year-12 school students (most having started or completed a Certificate II in Automotive) come and meet employers. The energy in the room was amazing, bustling, organised chaos, and it worked. Already, we have jobseekers interviewing for jobs as well as school students interviewing for school-based apprenticeships and work experience opportunities.

“I HAVE BROUGHT 4 YOUNG JOBSEEKERS HERE, AND THE ENGAGEMENT FROM THE EMPLOYERS AND MTAQ STAFF IS UNBELIEVABLE.”

The feedback from the event was outstanding with the enthusiasm from employers particularly pleasing to hear and showing that this is another MTA Queensland initiative that really can help to tackle the staff and skills shortage issues in the automotive industry.

“This is the best recruitment event that we have been to. We will talk to our senior management about using these events for ongoing recruitment,” said a representative from Eagers Automotive.

“Wow! We heard about the two previous events, but seeing it live, and seeing the connections made, is inspiring,” said a representative from the Department of Trade Employment and Training (DTET).

Jase Pearson, owner of Pearson Automotive in Brisbane, was equally as excited about what he was seeing.

“I came here not sure if I wanted to employ anyone at this point, and I have walked away with three resumes!’ said Jase. “This beats Seek hands down.”

Representatives from jobs providers and organisations helping jobseekers to find employment were equally pleased.

“I have brought 4 young jobseekers here, and the engagement from the employers and MTAQ staff is unbelievable,” said Candice from national Group Training Organisation, WPC Group.

For us here at MTA Queensland, seeing the reactions to these events, and the opportunities that are resulting from them, is truly encouraging.

“The Meet and Greet events have proven to be the preeminent employer/jobseeker introductory program for our industry,” said Rod Camm, MTA Queensland CEO. “They result in real jobs and career pathways and we take them seriously, as evidenced by us bringing 15 staff along to support them.”

Personally, these events are the coolest part of my job. A lot of hard work goes into them from our dedicated MTA Queensland staff, and the satisfaction we all get from

seeing real results and real opportunities resulting from such events is what drives our team.

So, to employers, we say that if you are chasing entry-level staff, an apprentice, or counter staff, then come along to one of our upcoming Meet & Greet events. Your next employee could be waiting! It is over to you.

MTA QUEENSLAND PROGRAM WORKING TO TACKLE WORKFORCE ISSUES AND CHANGE YOUNG LIVES

THE OPENING DOORS to the Automotive Industry program is a collaborative initiative between the Queensland Government and MTA Queensland. It’s a program that aims to address the workforce challenges in the automotive industry by connecting businesses with untapped employment groups and foster new recruitment and retention strategies.

Part of the program’s mission is to develop employment pathways for individuals who have been disadvantaged and challenge traditional recruitment practices to create diversity in the workforce. For an industry that always has staffing and skill deficits near the top of its list of challenges, thinking outside of the box in terms of where, for example, the next exceptional technician might come from just makes sense.

For MTA Queensland, the Opening Doors to the Automotive Industry program has been both a meaningful and successful exercise in promoting the industry as one that not only is accessible and offers truly exciting career opportunities, but is also one which highlights that extremely talented, enterprising and passionate people are clamouring for a chance to join the industry and show what they can do, if only they are given the chance.

Spearheading MTA Queensland’s

FOR MTA QUEENSLAND, THE OPENING DOORSTOTHEAUTOMOTIVEINDUSTRY PROGRAM HAS BEEN BOTH A MEANINGFUL AND SUCCESSFUL EXERCISE IN PROMOTING THE INDUSTRY

push to bring all of this together has been Bob Grierson and Alicia Welsford, who have worked with young people, employers, employment organisations and training enterprises, and a host of other stakeholders to bring about some brilliant results.

One of those success stories can be found in northwest Brisbane, at The Gap Mechanical & Service Centre.

Owned by former leading RACQ roadside assistant Dario Cardenas, The Gap Mechanical & Service Centre shows just how passion, resilience, and the right opportunity can change lives.

The business’s reputation is built on delivering high standards, on teamwork, and inclusivity. It’s a workshop that fosters an environment where strengths and weaknesses are balanced within the team, ensuring that every member contributes to the bigger picture.

The team works hard at developing a high-performing,

Ziaulhaq Khushhal and Stewart Fielding from Westpoint Autos with Bob Grierson from MTA Queensland's OpeningDoorstotheAutomotiveIndustry team

culturally diverse team. Employing people from diverse backgrounds has provided the business with access to a labour supply largely untapped. They have looked at their recruitment from a different angle to how they select and develop staff.

“Skill levels, strength and weaknesses and, most importantly, an attitude set on growing, learning and adapting is at the heart of our recruitment process,” said Dario. “By focusing on these we have managed to recruit a team that works harmoniously and that is always improving.

“Recognising that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses means that we can rely on each other to fill the gaps and lift our own standards up by having complementing strengths and weaknesses in the team. Having this as a focus has allowed us to find reliable hard working team members from all walks of life.”

Over at Westpoint Autos at Seventeen Mile Rocks, a wonderful success story is taking shape with former car

washer Ziaulhaq Khushhal, a 33-year-old from Afghanistan, who has begun his apprenticeship journey with help from the MTA Queensland team.

When Ziaulhaq, known as Zia, arrived at an MTA Queensland-run Automotive Career Preparation Session in September 2024, he had a passion for cars but faced a significant challenge – a speaker of the Dari language, he had very limited English skills.

Determined to pursue a career in the industry, he enrolled in the Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation qualification with the MTA Institute. His trainers and the MTA Queensland Workforce Solutions team provided extra support, ensuring he successfully completed the course.

After graduation, the search for a Light Vehicle Apprenticeship proved difficult due to the language barrier. However, instead of giving up, the MTA Queensland Opening Doors to the Automotive Industry team took a different approach, focusing on

entry-level opportunities. This led Zia to Westpoint Autos, where he started as a car washer in November 2024. The company saw his potential and offered him the chance to advance if his English improved.

Through perseverance and hard work, Zia quickly adapted. The team at Westpoint Autos provided continuous support, while having a colleague who spoke his native language made the transition smoother. His dedication paid off - on February 24, 2025, Zia commenced his apprenticeship.

For Zia, securing his apprenticeship is his biggest accomplishment and the help he received from the MTA Queensland team, as well as the welcoming and

supportive Westpoint crew, has made for a great experience.

“They have been very kind to me throughout my journey with them,” said Zia of Westpoint Autos. “They provide recognition where it is due, and they treat all of their staff members with respect. I believe they are a very good company to work for.

“And Bob and Alicia have been a great help to me as well as the trainers while I was studying. I believe that doing the training with MTA Queensland definitely helped me to secure the job I have now and that it was a great benefit to have.”

For Westpoint Autos, Zia has been another success story in their

journey employing those from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds. They’ve now partnered with MTA Queensland to fill all future vacancies, recognising the Association’s effectiveness in connecting skilled and unskilled workers looking for automotive careers.

“We have hired lots of people from a CALD background,” said Stewart Fielding, manager at Westpoint Autos. “It is where our future seems to be. We actually have more CALD employees than English - we have about 21 staff members and 13 of them are from a CALD background.”

1700km north of Westpoint Autos, at Bears Body Works in the Cairns suburb of Smithfield, Jonathan Bernays is also carving a start for himself in the automotive industry with assistance from the MTA Queensland team.

A recent, mature-aged hire who has joined the business’s administration team, Jonathan has always wanted to be part of the automotive industry and attended MTA Queensland’s Employer/ Jobseeker Meet and Greet event held in Cairns in September 2024 - an event which brought together people looking for the opportunity to join the industry with employers looking to take on new staff. Jonathan had the good fortune to meet Bears Body Works owners Graham and Nicole Nicholls who saw potential in him and offered him a two-day-a-week work experience trial in administration.

Jonathan’s dedication and enthusiasm quickly became evident and, after just a few weeks, Bears Body Works recognised his value and offered him a permanent position. He has now been part of the team for five months and absolutely loves his job.

Though he initially worried about his working speed, Jonathan was reassured by Graham and Nicole that he could take all the time he needed. Their supportive approach created an environment

where Jonathan could thrive without pressure.

With help and assistance from Bob and Alicia at MTA Queensland, as well as assistance from the team at Mylestones Employment – which also works to find employment for people with difficulties –Jonathan has slotted in brilliantly into the Bear Body Works team.

“Everything is going well so far,” he said. “Graham and Nicole have been very supportive . . . “

With the backing of their employers and the right support network Zia and Jonathan have landed the opportunities to craft long and successful careers, and their stories are just a couple of the many

examples of the benefits that can be had through inclusive hiring and engaging with those outside the cohort that businesses might traditionally look to for staff.

The Opening Doors to the Automotive Industry program is part of a wider program of initiatives that MTA Queensland has created to tackle the challenge of workforce and skills shortages.

Inside, it is, as you’d expect, suitably cutting edge. Rear-hinged doors and a flat floor create an open cabin. The second-row seats fold up, allowing the front-row seats to slide back far enough to create an area that users can take full advantage of when the vehicle is parked.

There’s diagonal LED lighting, a triangular LED dashboard animation, and a sleek metal lower dash provide a futuristic feel. High-tech features include a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function and Overthe-Air (OTA) updates.

Other smart features include pop-up luggage dividers and straps to help secure cargo of all sizes; a message lighting system that lets users display text
