WHERE IS HOME TO YOU?
As an expat, it’s a hard question to answer. I grew up in leafy Cheshire in the northwest of England. And every time I return, I’m enveloped in a warmth that comes from the slow pace, the familiarity of each street, the homeliness of the house my parents have lived in for the last 30 years. But truthfully, it stopped feeling like home the day I moved out and laid my foundations in London. I spent a few years building my life around this enigmatic city, making milestone decisions against the backdrop of breakfasts at cosy cafés, dinners at vibrant restaurants and weekend strolls at the myriad parks, markets and museums.
Then I moved to the UAE eight years ago, and the process began again. Initially, everything felt less permanent. Sure, I established the same rhythms: my local coffee shop, a favourite walking route, the best bar for after-work drinks. But for a long time, the plan was always to go ‘home.’
It wasn’t until last year that I realised that I am home here in the UAE. It’s here that I’ve built my career, bought my first home, established a network of lifelong friends, met my fiancé… this is home.
But it took me until this year to conclude that home also doesn’t always have to be a place. It’s a feeling that’s hard to pinpoint, but it’s one you can feel even when you’re somewhere new. And when you’re there, you’ll know it. It’s this feeling that’s dawned on me often when embarking on one of my favourite weekend pasttimes – a UAE staycation. And Abu Dhabi has no shortage of destinations for one of those. From family-friendly fun to blowout luxury getaways, you’ll find the very best of them from p15. I hope you’ll feel right at home.
Enjoy the issue,

Winding into the weekend at… Byron Bathers
In a bid to squeeze every last moment out of the alfresco season, I’ve been ticking off a few outdoor restaurants that I still haven’t visited of late. Recently, that meant an early dinner at Byron Bathers, the Aussie-inspired seaside eatery from EatX that replaced Bidi Bondi at Shoreline. It’s a lovely, relaxed spot that quickly filled up with families enjoying drinks in the final moments of sunshine, all tucking into the tasty menu of crowd-pleasing seafood.

Watching Reacher on… Prime Video
Amazon’s Prime Video has so much quality content for adults and kids, great movies and applause worthy original series. My latest fave for downloading and watching on the treadmill is Reacher. It’s an adaption of the popular Lee Childs literary character and it’s an absolute banger. It’s Jason Bourne with sarcastic quips. Peak popcorn TV.

Getting my matcha fix at…. Nette
A quality cup of matcha can be hard to come by but Nette does not disappoint. There are so many wholesome green tea dishes to choose from like smoothie bowls, matcha pain perdu, matcha cold brew, and smoothies. Cravings officially satisfied.

There’s a new home for eyewear in Mall of the Emirates. You have all the big fashion brands, luxury brands, lesser-known niche brands and you can even create your own pair at The Design Hub. Enjoying after-work drinks at… Salmon Guru

There’s a reason why the original Salmon Guru has been ranked within the World’s 50 Best Bars for several years running. I went recently to try the cocktail menu and I’m already planning what I’ll order on my return.

Getting my sweat on at… Crank
Risen is one of my favourite cafés. Not only are the interiors absolutely beautiful, light and airy – but the food never disappoints. I recently enjoyed the Risen smoked salmon pancakes, which can be compared to a Yorkshire pudding, stuffed with cream cheese, capers, pickled onions and smoked salmon.
@risendubai
– Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
My Tuesdays would not be complete without a 6am trip to Crank, kickstarting my day with nothing but good vibes. My trusted instructor, Nelson Sequeira, always serves the best Brazilian hits and positive energy, that has me pushing myself to new heights in the club-like spinning room. Never have I ever not left dripping with sweat but always feeling on top of the world, and absolutely ready to conquer the day ahead.

Through MY EYES
THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Layla Kardan and Hamdan Al Khafaji
We ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, their favourite places, hidden gems, must-have products, local brands they love. This month, singer, creative director, and entrepreneur Layla Kardan (@laylakardan) and her husband, restauranteur and entrepreneur Hamdan Al Khafaji give us the lowdown on what they’re loving right now and the favourite spots that their combined 50-years’ worth of UAE living has brought them.
Our morning routine consists of coffee at the cutest coffee shop, To The Moon and Back, in a courtyard in Jumeirah 2. It’s the most beautiful way to start the day and to practice our morning meditation. After coffee, we walk to Nessnass beach. It’s busy but not too busy, and we love saying hi to the locals we’ve befriended over the years. It’s a real community and the perfect beach to take our son to swim as it’s not too wavy. @ttmb.coffee
Our favourite staycation spot in the UAE is Ras Al Khaimah. We love to get away and revel in its natural beauty, amongst the emirate’s majestic mountains, do a hike and maybe a zipline, and take in the fresh air. We love to stay at The Ritz Carlton, Al Wadi Desert. On the way, we stop at Thunder Road Pizza for a good authentic pizza and stock up on delicious Italian cheeses and European produce and condiments. ritzcarlton.com
We have created our own little havenContrast Sauna and Ice Studio. It seems like a plug, but it truly is an escape. Contrast is the perfect place to unwind, switch off, and rejuvenate at the same time. The space is calming and makes you feel you’re in the Mediterranean. @contrastwellness
Our favourite restaurant is our own, Penelope’s at Yas Marina. Hamdan perfected the French Riviera menu and Layla curated the best talent in the UAE playing jazz and soul, and bringing so much life and flavour to the capital. @penelopes.ae
We love Honeycomb Hi-Fi in Downtown Dubai. It’s an incredible vinyl listening bar with great food and a casual ambience, and the design is top.
@honeycombhifi
The Palm’s new beach club and restaurant Tagomago transports you to Ibiza with the setting, vibe and menu. We’re not big fans of loud beach clubs, but we are so inspired by this beautiful space. It’s a great date spot or a place to go as a group.

THE BIG ONES
Adrift Burger
After a successful run at Expo 2020 Dubai, Adrift Burger Bar by ‘Gypsy Chef’ David Myers, which began life as a pop-up on Venice Beach, lands in Abu Dhabi as a permanent address at Yas Mall. The menu features a range of burgers, milkshakes and sides, but the DM Burger, once described as ‘The Perfect Burger’ by The New York Times, is the signature here, served with a mediumrare patty topped with Vermont cheddar, lettuce, and secret sauce on a brioche bun. @adriftburgerbar.ad
Sticky Rice
From a small family run Thai restaurant in Dubai’s JVC to occupying prime real estate inside Yas Mall, the story of Sticky Rice is heart melting. On the menu you’ll find refined SE Asian classics such as pad Thai, khao pad, and tom yum alongside rarer finds. We loved the umami-forward local clams stir fried with fresh garlic. And, for a limited time, diners get the chance to battle the claw to win Kew, Sticky Rice’s cuddly duck mascot.
@stickyriceae
Al Fanar
Initially created to bring traditional Emirati flavours to a wider audience, Al Fanar – located alongside the entrance of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi – mimics a UAE of yesteryear, with stone walls, souk vibes and wind towers in its nostalgic décor. The extensive menu includes a selection of traditional Emirati breakfast options served on long trays, and main dishes of grilled or fried meats and fish, rice dishes and kebabs.

BOO
Hailing from the UK, Boo Burger is the latest addition to the UAE’s smash burger scene with its first international branch now open in Yas Mall. Boo promises fast and fresh bites, crafted onsite with the best British and Irish-sourced products to make their classic American burger. @boo.burgerae

MEET THE CHEF
Adrift’s David Myers on what makes a perfect burger
Where did your search for the perfect burger take you?
No farther than my family’s kitchen. I was very lucky growing up. My mother made, what I consider to be the perfect burger, which was super simple – great ground beef, high quality cheddar cheese and a secret sauce, which was amazing. I’ve tried many burgers all over the US, but I still think hers was the most perfect.
What makes the perfect burger? It’s all about simplicity. It starts with great quality meat and the right balance of fat and texture. I think the simpler the condiments on it, the better. I prefer a soft bun, but firm enough to hold the meat and keep the juices in. At home, I prefer to grill my patty over bincho-tan coal, so it has a nice flavour.
What’s something that a lot of burger chains get wrong?
I just think it’s important to have an authentic story around a burger – something that comes from a place of history. That’s what we have. Keeping it super simple with the best ingredients and delivering it with your own heartbeat.
What should you never include in a burger?
Each to their own, I think. Everyone has their own taste, but for me, I don’t see myself putting pineapple on a burger anytime soon.

Adrenark Adventure, Abu Dhabi’s newest entertainment hub, is now open at Al Qana
WORDS: MILES BUCKERIDGE
WHATSON.AE | JUNE 2023 27
Along its waterfront promenades, Abu Dhabi leisure mega-project Al Qana can already list some amazing inhabitants. There are the award-winning dining concepts; bougie cafes; a giant integrated wellness hub and gym – The Bridge; a massive deluxe movieplex –CinemaCity; The National Aquarium; and futuristic gaming, VR and eSports hub Pixoul. But the latest attraction, Adrenark Adventure, is amongst its most impressive attractions. After swinging open its doors last month, it’s now in full, adrenal gland sapping, operation.
The chief deliverables of Adrenark are entertaining kids, heart rate-spiking thrill experiences, and a wild three-level e-karting track, all with packages starting from Dhs99.
It features an incredible 20 different activities and whilst many of them are just the ticket for adults, they also do a stand-up job of siphoning off some that *screams, covered in slime and acrylic paint* young person energy.
You’ll find the mammoth 54,000 sq ft (making it the region’s largest indoor adventure park) wow-opolis right next to Pixoul Gaming.
There are activities such as potholing (that’s cave exploration for those that weren’t in the Girl Guides or Cub Scouts) and it is deifinitely not for the claustrophobic. Plus, a rooftop zipline called Roll Glider that twists and turns and allows you to control your own speed; cheek-puffing oof rides; a series of slides; bravery-testing stunt bag jumps; an elevated rope course; Through The Roof - a theme park-style drop ride that gives your insides the John Cena treatment; softplay; multiple climbing walls and much more.
Their star attraction though is the

multi-level e-karting track that climbs three floors inside the building. This unmissable attraction will test even the strongest of friendships to the limit when competitive streaks are unleashed on the track. And, in case of any future court case, let us state clearly for the record that we are absolutely not planning to recreate the iconic ending of Thelma and Louise from the top tier.
Talking about the launch, Paul Hamilton, General Manager of Adrenark Adventure said: “We are thrilled to announce the opening of Adrenark Adventure, the region’s largest indoor adventure park, offering a diverse range of thrilling activities for visitors of all ages.”
“From our multi-level e-karting track to our climbing walls to the treasure caves, each activity offered by Adrenark Adventure confirms our commitment to providing visitors with a fun, interactive, and immersive experience. We are confident that Adrenark will become a must for thrill seeking families.”
How much does it cost?
The Discovery Pass is Dhs135 and gets you on six different experiences. The toddler pass is Dhs78 and unlocks activities for younger adventurers. The eight-attraction strong Adventure Pass is Dhs179 and the Get Tired Playing, which nets you unlimited access to the park’s full collection of adrenalin thrills, is Dhs299.

What else is new at Al Qana?
There’s a brand new smokehouse – Meat Moot, serving up premium meat dishes and non-limp brisket. There’s a new Neapolitan-style pizzeria, Graffiti Pizzeria & Trattoria that’s opened up in Abu Dhabi’s largest movie theatre, Cinemacity Al Qana, creating an opportunity for ‘dinner and a show’ date night greatness. There’s also Trax. Inspired by flavours from the east coast of the USA, this refined diner is bringing Philly cheese steaks and messy sliders to the picnic ensemble of Al Qana. Off Record Café is an eatery with its own DJ. La Vena Café is a cute little coworking space and then there’s the brand new Terra...
TERRA FIRM FAVE
Terra is a concept from the culinarily creative mind of Rashed Al Tayer, founder and CEO of Outset. You may remember them from such hospitality portfolio inclusions as the Dubai outlet of Terra, and then there’s Boston Lane, Neighbors, and CMPLX.
But with the already considerable assembly of EU restaurants already taking up residence on the breezy waterfront of Al Qana, why should we instead head to this house of Med? What’s quintessential about this ambassador of continental?
The Euro-feasts of Terra Eatery’s menu feature an “open and humble approach to gastronomy and culinary processes”. We’re hoping that translates into honest, uncontrived flavours from carefully selected ingredients. You’ll also find distinctive earthy (as the name suggests) aesthetics, strong botanical hemming, and an open ‘show’ kitchen.

PAGE 33
REVIEW: JOSÉ BY PIZARRO
Is it worth tapping up this tapas spot?
Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers’ new casa of continental cuisine, José by Pizarro is a bijoux, 46-seat tapas bar and restaurant. It’s a concept from, as the name provides the most explicit sort of spoiler for, international cheffing icon José Pizarro – tapas tzar and poster boy for the globalisation of Iberian gastronomy.
In terms of interior space, the warmlylit resto-bar feels somewhere between an Osakan karaoke joint and a Ramblas bodega. One stretch of terracota wall features framed black and white Pizarro family photos, and demonstrates the chef’s belief in the idea that restaurants work best when they connect with people on a personal level: “I think kitchens and restaurants are about memories” he told us when we visited ahead of the opening, “life is about memories.”
At 5.30pm on a Tuesday, we’re here for an obscenely early dinner, and making the best sort of memories.
Heading up the kitchen when Chef José is off campus is Carlos Ortiz. He’s holding court on menu recommendations with the
rare ice cool charisma that is only seen in the most storied chefs. From the sharing small plates, Ortiz insists we take the signature Cantabrian anchovies on brioche (Dhs33), along with a tortilla (Dhs50) – that’s the Spanish omelette variety; and spinach and manchego cheese croquetas (Dhs50). From the sharing mains gallery, we’ve elected a serving of the arroz meloso de carabinero (Dhs325), a deep sea red prawn with rice.
José by Pizarro anchovies are missionaries for the salty fish dish, providing – we’re told – a clinic for even the most stubborn anchovy cynic. And it’s true that what we have here is incomparable to the variety that are often picked and flicked off the top of pizzas. These fillets are of pure bred Atlantic-fringe pedigree, packed in premium oil and full of complex meaty, almost game-tinged flavour, precisionframed by the sweet brioche and deeply smoky butter cradle.
The croquetas are also essential selections, a tapas table staple that in this Pizarro world are given a velvety
fondant complexion that makes them hot contenders for most “excuse me ma’am, could we get another plate of these please” orders. Ask for your tortilla to be served soft, it’s where you get the fullest and we’d argue most authentic flavour.
We end our evening with (we’re sacrificing accuracy for brevity here) prawn paella. It’s a creamy, and therefore deceptively rich and filling plate. It feels regal and indulgent, the carabinero prawn – a prized deep sea treasure – offers all sorts of pleasure triggers for those appreciative of outstanding seafood. It’s beyond negative criticism, but for a raucous, rustic emotionally-charged plate of the people, we’d recommend the chicken paella (Dhs315) we tried on our last visit. There’s big competition, but it may very well be the best of its kind in the UAE. A true taste of provincial España.
José by Pizarro, lobby level, Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi Corniche, W Corniche Road.
Tuesday to Sunday 5pm to 11.30pm.

LOVE VIBE CAFÉ
Does Love Vibe pass the vibe check?
The UAE’s insatiable love for Instagrammable cafés has showed no signs of slowing down. And pretty pink concept Vibe has been at the forefront of that movement in Dubai for some time now.
The first café launched in Jumeirah, while the second, a licenced outpost in DIFC, came soon after. Now, the Vibe team has expanded to the capital, and developed its nomenclature to offer ‘a more sophisticated version’ of its classic design, in the form of Love Vibe.
Found in Khalifa City Community Market, the bright, airy space is hard to miss, with its signature pink furniture, neon signage and rose-hued staff uniforms. We pull out a stylish pink chair
under the words ‘don’t kill my Vibe’ lit-up in neon LED.
The digital menu takes us through a myriad of punny, pop culture-inspired menu items from ‘what she order? Fish filet’ to ‘worth every penne’. This outpost isn’t licensed, but that doesn’t stop the drinks selection from being varied and exciting. We begin with a refreshing virgin strawberry mojito (Dhs29), which is presented with plenty of strawberry slices and mint. Since we never met a fritter we didn’t like, we begin with wild mushroom fritters with sweet chilli mayo (Dhs45 for four).
Our streak continues, the deep-fried spheres are delicious, oozing with tasty, creamy filling with just the right amount of crunch. We also dig into the beetroot hummus (Dhs35), which is a large portion
Words: Elise Kerr
of suitably fuchsia dip accompanied by light, thin tortilla chips. The hummus is flavourful and moreish, but there are mains on the way.
Drawn in by the description, we order the ‘braise yourself’ (Dhs159). Slow braised wagyu is served in a mushroom and pepper jus, topped with crispy potatoes. The meat is tender, breaks apart easily, and absorbed the flavour of the jus, our only critique is the potatoes were not as crispy as we’d have liked. From the pasta section we opt for ‘the pesto is yet to come’ (Dhs65). A generous portion arrives, coated in homemade basil pesto. There’re also sundried tomatoes, chicken strips, and chilli cheese crumbs, which add a delightful flavour to the dish.
For those with a sweet tooth, a display of freshly made cakes is available to choose from, or the signature pink pancakes (Dhs61) are the way to go.

The dreamy island getaway you never knew you needed…
Nurai Island has always enjoyed a mysterious allure, sitting just a 20-minute boat trip from Saadiyat Island, this secluded safe haven has been on our list for some time.
So with a rare burst of Sunday afternoon motivation we find ourselves aboard a water taxi and Nurai-bound for an epicurean adventure. It takes us over waves and through untouched ocean blues, tracing a line of serene mangroves.
On arrival, we are greeted by a luscious canopy of tropical foliage, with floral pops of purple and a wooden boardwalk guiding us to the shore. This exotic oasis exudes sophistication and luxury while retaining
an understated barefoot bohemian chic. We arrive at Dusk, a charming Mexican eatery with views of the sun slowly sinking into the sea. We sit at an ocean level annex on the outdoor terrace, plush cushion to our backs. Below us, a carpet of grass catches shadows from the soporific sway of palms. We decide that sharing dishes are the appropriate form for an island idyll and begin with smoked guacamole (Dhs75). It makes a magician’s entrance, brought to the table encased in a glass bell jar, and swimming with mesmerising smoke. We dig salty tortillas straight in, heaping on the greeny, smokey goodness, punctuated with bursts of lime.
We also try the aguchile de salmon (Dhs90). This smallbut-mighty bowl of seared cubed salmon sits in an aromatic bath of spicy, citrusy auguachile sauce, and the array of flavours is given a welcome zest by garden-fresh crunches of onions and cucumber.

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:
SAADIYAT BEACH CLUB
Can the brunch match the beach at this luxurious leisure location?
We will never take off our ‘I heart Saadiyat hat’, nor tire of telling the uninitiated about just how magical that Abu Dhabi island truly is. It’s a bonafide natural beauty, blessed with fairytale dunes, exotic wildlife, perfect turquoise seas, a collection of iconic cultural landmarks, super luxe five-star lairs and a blossoming culinary community.
Saadiyat Beach Club (SBC) took over the space formally occupied by The Monte-Carlo Beach Club in 2014, so it’s been in public cognisance for more than a hot sand minute. And since the very birth of the venue, it’s enjoyed a reputation for hosting bougie crews, azul hues and the most spectacular views. It’s an unashamed celebration of leisure time luxury – cabanas in the front, party in the back – but we’re not here to test its double (pool and sea) dip credentials. We’re here to pass comment on something altogether more serious – The quality of its ‘starting at Dhs345 for the soft package’ brunch.
Inside the lowrise, bone-white building that houses the main line-up of food and beverage venues, we’re confronted with a sophist’s choice, peak alfresco season is behind us, and although those pool-side tables on the terrace look terribly tempting, the wiseman dines indoors. So let it be. The SBC brunch is a buffet-style feast at Safina restaurant, and although we’re placard holders on the march towards a future of ‘sharing starters, and your choice of a main,’ when the more traditional format is done right, it can still be immensely enjoyable.
And of course, Saadiyat Beach Club does it right. The only corners cut here are the laps around the pool. There are tables lined up with intricate salad concoctions and connoisseur cold cuts, but our line of sight is sucked away by a focused team of chefs searing char lines into premium cuts on the grill
stations. Our plate begins to feel heavy, but the ice-chilled super luxe seafood spread is calling sirenlike from the side of the room. And pizzas, big Neopolitan energy, freshly fired flat bread – topped with glinting, oil dimpled mozzarella. More impossible choices navigated, but only on the understanding that further trips will be made.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Scoring highly across the brunching board, if it’s in your price range – you’ll find few contemporaries with such experiential charm.
Safina puts on live entertainment for its brunching public, and the service is smart and fleet. The only ostensive reality check is in the pricing. It’s Dhs345 for the soft package and that doesn’t include a day pass (you’ll have to add on Dhs200 for that particular pleasure). But Saadiyat Beach Club was never destined to be anything less than ‘VIP, darling’. And looking absolutely flawless doing it. Saadiyat Island, Sat 1pm to 4pm, soft Dhs345, house Dhs445, premium Dhs545. @saadiyatbeachclub

NEVER MEAT: YOUR HEROES
The UAE’s first ever meat alternative production plant has just begun operations in Abu Dhabi
a massive 20,000 sqft plot in KEZAD has now sprung into life and is preparing halal-certified, GMO-free, soy-free, allergen-free, gluten-free, completely meat-free regional favourites such as kebabs, kofta, soujuk, minced ‘meat’, and of course, burger patties.
The science is pretty clear – most of us should be eating less meat. We’re simply pointing out the facts, we’re not here to judge. The author of this feature likely ranks in the 99th percentile for carnivorous consumption. But for our own health, and that of the planet’s, going plant-based – if not exclusively at least a little more often – is almost certainly a very good thing.
The cruelty-free trend isn’t new of course, and neither is the concept of ‘meat alternatives’ – but the products have been getting steadily more sophisticated, and some are now suspiciously close to their inspiration. There are entirely ethical plantbased burgers that ‘bleed’, chickenfree nuggets you’d swear had history in
the coop and doner that once spiced and layered with condiments are virtually indistinguishable from the traditional 2am “all the salad and chilli sauce, please boss” snack.
The demand is blossoming too. According to the statista.com website, the value of the meat-substitute market in the UAE is growing annually by over 27 per cent.
And with Abu Dhabi being at the cutting edge of most future technology, it was only ever going to be a matter of time before it spawned some homegrown plantbased meat pioneers of its own. And that bread roll has now been filled by locally-based FoodTech outfit, Switch Foods. Their first location,
Talking about the importance of this sort of project, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment H.E Mariam bint Mohammed AlMheiri, who was there to inaugurate the facility said: “Plantbased meat generates 30 to 90 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional meat and contributes to a more sustainable food supply.”
“The inauguration of Switch Foods’ facility is timely as we celebrate the Year of Sustainability and prepare to host COP28 later this year ... we are investing in a thriving ecosystem that fosters innovation and growth through partnerships and investments in sustainable food production. This project embodies the spirit of public-private collaboration and ingenuity necessary to achieve our food security and climate action objectives.”
And it represents a huge milestone in the journey of the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051, a project focusing on promoting food security “through sustainable innovations and diversified food sources”. A massive deal for a country with a land surface area that is still majority desert.
But, without positioning our mouthes at the end of a conveyor belt in Switch HQ, where does one find tasty meatalternatives in the city?

The best summer blockbusters coming to screens in 2023
Blockbuster season is almost upon us — that time of year where plots and nuanced character arcs take a back seat to car chases, explosions, one-line catchphrases, kill counts and plans that are just so crazy, they might just work. And there’s a jumbo popcorn-bucket sized serving coming up this summer. These are just some of our faves...
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
Expected: June 8
This movie was crafted to be a direct sequel to Bumblebee (and prequel to 2007’s Transformers). It’s based on the Beast Wars set of comics and animated TV shows, and charts the adventures of another set of giant alien machines, the Maximals. Rather than turning into modes of transport, these robots have the ability to eh-eh-eh into animals. It’s directed by Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II, so he’s used to picking up a film series halfway through) and we know that regardless of whatever we think (honestly, when is ‘make the robots animals’ ever the answer?), the kids will still ‘roll out’ to see it.
The Flash
Expected: June 15
Everything we know about The Flash (titular character played by Ezra Miller) screams fan service in the most authentic way possible. From this year’s Super Bowl trailer we got confirmation on the return of Ben Affleck as Batman, Michael Shannon will reprise his role as General Zod, and there was a revealing teaser for Sasha Calle’s hotly anticipated turn as Supergirl. And we should probably address the other bat in the room. Michael Keaton, back in The Dark Knight’s cowl. If you’re wondering why there are two Batmans in the same movie, buckle up. According to comic book lore, Flash can run fast enough to travel through time, allowing him to alter the past. Queueing up fun in the form of messing about with timelines and inter-dimensional dabbling. The big question isn’t whether it’ll be any good, all signs point to yes, it’s more about whether this film will provide the launch pad for studio head, James Gunn’s new DCU vision.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Expected: June 30
It’s hard to resist the subconscious urge of ageist prejudice after learning that at 80, Harrison Ford is reprising his iconic actionarcheologist role, Indiana Jones for one last crack of the whip. But it’s a baited boobytrap, and the giant tumbling boulder of shame will wipe you out if you don’t move out of its way. He might not be as spritely, but the trailer teases that same pedigree of swashbuckling, snake-phobic, artefact-chasing, map-hopping, humour-laced adventuring that’s often been imitated over the past four decades since the original film was released, but never replicated. And an inestimably large part of its charm over that tenure has been Ford’s glint-eyed screen charisma. This fifth chapter of the story sees the return of long-time pal and Fez enthusiast Sallah (John RhysDavies), Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays Indy’s Goddaughter Helena, and Mads Mikkelsen also appears (presumably as arch baddy).
The Meg 2: The Trench
Expected: August 9
The end of the first Meg movie very transparently teased the possibility of a sequel, and the name of this second film suggests that Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) and his gang of amateur shark busters will be returning to the ingress point that spawned the last batch of aquatic leviathans. If you’re looking for spoilers, the movie is based on the Steve Alten book, The Trench (the follow up to Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror which the first film was based on), but if you’d prefer baited waters a little less chummy, we might suggest to you that the eponymous trench might be home to a lot more than sharks. *Queue ominous Jaws music*.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
Expected: July 13
If you’re an action movie fan, they don’t come much bigger, or as frequently as the films of the Mission Impossible franchise. And like the man who plays lead protagonist Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), they only seem to be getting better with age. The next two entries, Dead Reckoning, Parts One and Two, were shot back-to-back. Again, details are scant but we do know that the IMF Squad filmed in Abu Dhabi. So maybe there’s a great objet d’arts heist at Louvre Abu Dhabi, or a high-stakes car chase up the E11 in a pair of Nissan Patrols. We can only hope.
Gran Turismo
Expected: August 10
This isn’t a true movie adaptation of the popular Sony game. It couldn’t be. The game doesn’t have a plotline and whilst you may argue that might actually have improved the Assassin’s Creed movie, we wouldn’t dare comment. Instead, this film is based around the miraculous real life story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe). Jann was an elite gamer, a Gran Turismo grandmaster who was recruited into a racing academy on a gut intuition that good gamers might make good drivers. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) and the cast list includes David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Djimon Hounsou, Josha Stradowski and Geri ‘Ginger Spice’ Horner. We’re expecting the plot curve to go a little up, a little down, up, down, left, right, square, X.

THAT’S SNOW BUSINESS
The region’s biggest snow park is primed to open on June 8, bringing cool vibes, cold snaps and chill times to the capital
VITAL SKATE-TISTICS
These are probably the most exciting snow facts that we’ve ploughed through in our research on the attraction.
•There will be 12 exhilarating rides and 17 engaging attractions spread over a 10,000 square-foot area.
Snow Abu Dhabi looks set to be the real ‘piste’ de résistance of 1.2 billion US Dollar mega project, Reem Mall. Your invitation to elope to the slopes begins on June 8, when the region’s largest snow park finally unleashes an avalanche of sub-zero shenanigans on the capital. And we can’t wait to skidaddle over to live, laugh, and ‘Let It Goooooo ’
Snow Abu Dhabi is a Majid Al Futtaim Group endeavour and part of the wider Reem Mall construction. The mall is deep
into its phased opening plan now and once fully finished, it’ll feature 85 different dining options and over 450 stores, across twomillion-square-feet of retail space.
What will likely take the top spot on the list of ways to stay chill in the capital this summer season, Snow Abu Dhabi will offer whimsical encounters with themedcharacters and exciting entertainment experiences.
@snowauh
•The temperature will be regulated to a super chilly 2ºC, and the slopes will be dusted in a snowcapped coating to an average depth of around half a metre.
•Confirmed attractions include two giant slides, one named ‘Ice and Floes Toboggan Race’ that sounds nice and gentle, and ‘Grauppel’s Summit Escape,’ which sounds theatrically less so.
•Other rides include The Entry Plaza, Flight of the Snowy Owl, Magic Carpet, Polar Express Train, Crystal Carousel and Ice and Floes Bumper Tubes, The Trolls Bowl, Drifts Downhill Run, and Snow Hares Bunny Hill and The Enchanted Tree (which will serve as a sort of central part of the story telling aspect of the park).
•Snow Abu Dhabi dining experiences come in the form of The Lodge Restaurant, Grotto Amphitheatre, Ice Café, the Party Room and VIP Room.

Paw Patrol Live is coming to Abu Dhabi
In hugely exciting news for kids
(admittedly somewhat less so for the parents) – Paw Patrol Live is returning to Abu Dhabi Taking place across four days from June 8 to 11, the interactive live show is bringing your favourite band of emergency rescue pups to life. Kids and adults alike will be transported to such touristic Adventure Bay hotspots as The Lookout, Seal Island and beyond. To help set the scene, the stage craft will employ a blend of classic theatrical background art, and a super modern, high-tech video wall.
We’re not going to share any spoilers about the storyline, you’re likely already well aware of the show’s narrative formula. And there’s always the fear that Mayor Humdinger will put a price on our head. So if you hear us “yelp for help”, you know who to call.

CULTURE // SHOWS
MEET THE CREW
Let’s reintroduce the main gang of mutts for those who may need a little nudge to jog the memory. For the purpose of understanding the play we will only be focusing on the main seven that will be on stage.
Ryder The kingpin
We’re not entirely sure what favours he had to pull at City Hall to secure the private emergency services contracts or how he managed to acquire quite so many dogs, given the fact that he is only 10, but we applaud his creativity.
Chase The glory seeker
You know the type, always has to be right, must be at the forefront of every case and craves the adoration and approval of his superiors. His weakness? Cat allergies? Standard lame Chase energy.
Zuma The surfer bro
His main job is water rescue, basically the David Hasselhoff of the Paw Patrol rescue services ensemble is what we’re saying. Cool in a crisis, calm under fire, Zuma is all about good vibes and gnarly waves.
Rocky The Eco-warrior
The loveably scruffy Rocky is Adventure Bay’s own Greta Thunberg. He lives and breathes environmentalism. Hugging trees, ensuring people are using the appropriate colour-coded recycling bins, and just generally hoarding.
Skye The brains
The Paw Patrol’s eye in the sky-e, there could be no better name for a helicopter pilot. With the sole possible exception of Chopper, but that’s not very ladylike. The power of flight means that Skye comes in very handy for any jobs that require a bit of altitude and a positive attitude.
Marshall The clown
We say ‘clown,’ he’s often actually borderline criminally negligent, frequently more of contributor to the chaos than an interrupter. It’s his enthusiasm that’s the problem, he’s just so excited he ends up all fumbles and whoopsies. It’s a good job he’s not tasked with putting out fires then.
Rubble The glutton
An English bulldog who would literally rather snack on a big ol’ sarnie (we hear you Rubble) than try and rescue the perennially imperilled folk of Adventure Bay. Honestly, considering how often these catastrophic calamties seem to occur – and who can blame this ‘goodest’ of boys?
Etihad Arena, June 8 to June 11, tickets start from Dhs105. pawpatrollive. com / abu-duabi. platinumlist.net. Meet and Greets are available.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
Ramy Elzaghawy
48 JUNE 2023 | WHATSON.AE CULTURE // ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Words: Aarti Saundalkar
There’s so much that contributes to the UAE being one of the best places in the world to visit and live in. And whilst it may not be the first defining characteristic that springs to mind, this beautiful country really has become something of an open-air art gallery, with sculptures, installations and charismatic street murals adding to the amassed urban appeal.
Many facades of the UAE’s cities, the walls and old buildings have become impromptu canvases, living frescos with colourful designs created by talented local artists. And amongst the most exciting, ambitious, stirring works are those from the hands of Ramy Elzaghawy.
Elzaghawy is a graffiti artist based in the UAE and is committed to raising the profile of his beloved artistic medium. He has been a part of a number of prestigious projects and has left his mark at several emblematic locations across the country. The spray paint splendor of the lady at Bla Bla Dubai, the green and yellow floral design at W Hotel Palm Jumeirah, and other art murals at Barasti, Zero Gravity, Yas Marina, and more all bare his swag and his tag.
His largest piece to date measures a whopping one kilometre – a work of art that the artist spent four months creating. The mural, located in Al Qana, Abu Dhabi was created for Adrenark Adeventure – the region’s biggest indoor adventure attraction and eSports hub Pixoul.
When What’s On asked if he has a team to support him, Elzaghawy tells us “I don’t have a team. I work alone from
day one. It’s a one-man show. I believe everyone has his own style.” He tells us that all his work for must demonstrate his (magic) ’touch’ so he works alone. His work spans the GCC but he loves to focus on the UAE as something new is always happening, and he is always keen to add his artistic flair. “In Dubai, every day is a new day, something fresh is showing up. I believe I am in the best place in the world to showcase my art.”
So, how exactly does Elzaghawy come up with his creative vision? He tells us clients will almost always give him some level of brief, including details such as the colour palette to use, but Elzaghawy does his own research on where the art will be placed. Analysing patterns in light and shade aspects, visibility from various angles, movement vectors, surface textures and other technical considerations. This vision and preparation plays no small part in the fact that his presentations for commissions often get the green light on the very first try. People that appreciate art seem to trust Elzaghawy and give him the space and creative freedom to express himself.
When asked about his favourite mural, (the very humble) Elzaghawy tells us he doesn’t want to have one because, “inside me, I always feel like I can do better. If one day I feel like I love a particular piece, that is the end of me and I won’t grow anymore.”
He adds that he loves what he does and enjoys it, but believes he can do more and wants more walls to keep doing what he loves.
Much like Banksy, Elzaghawy loves to work at night after the city has gone to sleep. He loves the silence and listens to music while he works, and enjoys every second of it. He gets so connected at times to a mural that he can work all night up until the next evening.
Elzaghawy was born and raised in the UAE and believes that this is his country. He loves the UAE and feels this is his home. When asked what he loves most about the UAE, he says it’s hard to put into words, “the country has connected so deeply with me and I love every single thing.” He then restates “I believe I am in the best place on earth.”
When asked about future murals, Elzaghawy has plans for one more big mural in the UAE but is awaiting confirmation, and we honestly can’t wait to see what he does.

ROWED TRIP
Meet the Dubai-based team making a ‘world’s first’ voyage across the Pacific
Maybe it’s the frontier desert landscape that occupies much of the UAE’s interior, maybe it’s the pervasive sense that anything is possible in this beautiful ol’boomtown of ours, but certainly, something seems to fan the flames of pioneering fire within the emirate’s residents. And the latest wild challenge to be chosen by a band of intrepid Dubai-based adventurers is something though attempted in the past, has never been achieved. It’s a journey that will require extreme physical endurance from the team tackling it, bringing them face-to-face with unknown perils of the deep, Einstein’s crystals, cosmic isolation, the potential for 100ft waves and James Blunt’s ukulele...
52 JUNE 2023 | WHATSON.AE SPORT // ADVENTURES
We’re speaking to Paris Norriss (AKA Guy in Dubai), one of a four-man crew (which also includes Harry Amos, Oliver Amos and Barney Lewis) aiming to row across a treacherous 4,800km stretch of the Pacific Ocean, from Monterey California to the island of Kaua in Hawaii. The scheduled departure date for the ‘Brothers N Oars’ team is June 12, and — with fair winds and a bit of luck — the voyage will likely take around 40 days.
Top on our list of questions was of course ‘why though?’ But we also drop anchor over some of the more exciting, compassionate and frankly terrifying aspects of the trip.
What are the biggest dangers and physical challenges that you’ll have to overcome?
The most remote place on earth is Point Nemo in the Pacific Ocean, not far from where our route takes us. Being so isolated means the closest people to us will be astronauts and hence we need to be able to endure everything the Pacific throws at us. Hurricanes in the ocean can generate waves up to 100 feet high in bitter cold winds. This could capsize the boat which can be very dangerous and we need to know how to correct the situation if it does occur. But the thing that keeps me awake at night is sharks. Once every five days someone needs to get in the water and scrub the bottom of the boat to make it streamlined. This takes about 20 minutes and whilst your teammates will be watching out for sharks, it doesn’t take away from the fear of looking down at an ocean that is 11km deep.
What inspired you to make this journey?
My own personal motivation came 10 years ago when I looked after someone within my extended family who had a terminal illness and eventually passed away. The notion that life is not guaranteed gave me the realisation that I need to make my career the avenue for the life I want to live and came up with the idea to create my own TV series (Guy in Dubai) covering the adventures that the eight-year-old version of myself dreamed of. I made a conscious decision to take on some mega challenges, so when my dear old school friend Oli Amos told me he was planning to row across an ocean with his brother, I didn’t waste a second to say “I’m in”.
What kind of supplies and equipment will you be taking?
The boat is a Rannoch R45 Elite. It’s built of carbon fiber to make it more lightweight than traditional fiberglass. It’s 7.5m long and about 2m wide and has two cabins which we sleep in. We generate electricity from two solar panels which feed our communication equipment as well as our water desalinator and anything else electric we wish to take with us. Our food is mainly freeze dried food from Real Turmac which we add hot water to hydrate. We need to eat between 5-6,000 calories each day (we’ll be burning around 9,000), so highly calorific snacks are a must. Malt loaf seems to be one the team like. Also, celebrity mystifier Uri Geller sent the team four crystals , for good luck. They were
found on Albert Einstein’s desk when } he died.
What sort of shanty bangers are going on your mid-Pacific playlist? A bit of Hawaiian music seems topical, though Oli Amos is in charge of our playlist as he seems to have a taste that we all agree on. We also have a signed Ukulele being donated by James Blunt (cousin to the Amos brothers) for me to play along the journey. As the Ukulele is an instrument native to Hawaii, we thought of creating a few songs along the way to let the Hawaiian’s know we are inbound.
How did you choose the charities involved?
We are supporting two charities, The Invictus Games, which was a strong supporter of Cayle Royce MBE and hence a nice way to give back to a Charity that helped a good friend of the team. We also wanted to support a charity focusing on marine conservation as our row will take us past the Pacific trash dump. We want to raise awareness and funds for the inspirational projects that the Blue Marine Foundation are doing to conserve 30 per cent of the world’s oceans by 2030.
Good luck to Paris and the team. May peace be the journey. You can follow the lads’ voyage on their Instagram page

Posture Studio
Words: Elise Kerr
Posture Studio was founded by Shamma and Rodha, two Emiratis who discovered their love for Pilates and well-being over a decade ago and wanted to bring the benefits of Pilates to Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi. After extensive research and training, the founders created a space where people of all ages and abilities could come together and experience the transformative power of Pilates. The studio’s welcoming and inclusive approach ensures that everyone feels at home, regardless of their fitness levels. The female owners set out to offer a range of popular classes, from mat Pilates to barre, and the increasingly popular reformer, which we came to test out for ourselves.
Reformer can feel intimidating to the uninitiated, but it’s a simple tool, based on a board attached to a set of springs, allowing it to move back and forth with varying resistance. The class is 50 minutes long, and sessions are run according to ability level.
Lying on our backs, we place our feet on the footrest (it’s recommended to wear grippy socks for reformer) and dig our heels down to gently float backwards on the board. We repeat this motion with various alterations in order to work different muscle groups in our legs, before moving on to upper body at the half-way point.
The studio itself is bright and spacious, utilising natural light to create a welcoming
and uplifting atmosphere. There are two studios, one for barre and mat classes, and one for reformer. Down the corridor are the changing facilities, while in the reception there’s a small selection of products available to purchase and a tea station for welcome drinks on arrival. The modern finishings add to the overall aesthetics of the studio, which show the amount of thought and detail that has gone into designing the space.
Prices start from Dhs100 for a single class of mat Pilates, and Dhs150 for reformer, with multi-class packages available. Posture Studio, Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, daily 8am to 8pm. Tel: (0)50 712 0183. @posturestudio.ae

THINGS TO SEE AND DO
Our Lady of the Rocks
Located in the serene Bay of Kotor, Our Lady of the Rocks is one of Montenegro’s star attractions. The story goes that this islet was built by two brothers, both local seamen, to protect a painting of the Virgin Mary with Christ, which they discovered on a sea rock in 1452. To protect it, the brothers built a quaint church around the painting, and continued each year to bring rocks to the island to ensure its safe keeping. Even today, that tradition is kept alive by the locals, and each year on July 22 residents sail over to the island bringing rocks with them, in a festival known as fašinada.
Old Town of Kotor
A picturesque masterpiece wedged between the endless azure shades of the water and dramatic craggy mountain peaks, Kotor is a maze of narrow cobbled streets and quaint squares dotted with stores selling local crafts and cafés serving piled-high plates of local seafood with homemade lemonade. With its storied history under the rule of Romans, Byzantines, Austro-Hungarians, and Venetians, ever-present in the historic town’s architecture, each turn provides an opportunity to marvel at Venetian palaces, baroque monuments and ornate stone pillars. Layers of history make their mark on the exterior, while a new wave of upscale cafés and stylish boutiques harmoniously settled within the buildings draw the town into the present: the two worlds integrating with palpable ease.
Porto Montenegro
If Porto Montenegro, Luštica Bay and Porto Novi are the golden triangle of Montenegro’s new era of glamour, Porto Montenegro is the original anchor. Decidedly chic and unapologetically modern, it presents a dazzling first impression for international arrivals sailing in from overseas, with a ritzy French Riviera feel. The waterfront promenade is a sublime setting for relaxation and sunset rendezvous, lined with elegant boutiques, chic cafés, and restaurants in soothingly contemporary hues.
Savina Winery
Get a taste of the local grape at hillside winery, Savina. Having begun as a hobby for the two brothers and owners, Savina is now spread across a multi-hectare vineyard, producing a modest 25,000 bottles of grape per year, which it largely supplies to the growing list of upscale restaurants and resorts throughout the south.

WHERE TO STAY
One&Only Portonovi
A fashionable resort town on the idyllic rim of the Adriatic, Portonovi is the location of One&Only’s debut European resort. One&Only Portonovi has transformed a former military base into a luxurious Adriatic escape with endless appeal. Where verdant land encounters soothing sea, the aesthetic is distinctly Mediterranean, laced with One&Only’s five-star signature style. At the heart, a stretching infinity pool in shimmering aquamarine serves as a runway down to a manmade beach where plush loungers are shaded by white parasols that swing lazily in the breeze, and you’ll find one of two signature dining experiences, Sabia, an upscale Italian restaurant. The delectable menu is a celebration of Italian-inspired dining in a beachfront setting that emulates breezy summer days on Portofino’s sun-drenched shores. A total of six swimming pools are encased by perfectly manicured gardens or positioned by the golden sands: children splash playfully at the
family-friendly pool; beachgoers dip between three inviting pools lining the sand; a glamorous crowd recline effortlessly poolside at Tapasake, a vibrant Japanese restaurant and beach club; and the cavernous indoor spa pool, part of a first-of-itskind Chenot Espace wellness facility set over a sprawling 4,000 square metre space. A collection of 28 treatment rooms invites guests to discover tailored programmes and pioneering treatments to pamper and purify, a combination of clinical science and holistic wellness that will draw guests long after the summer season concludes in October. But even at this new nautical playground, grand on the grandest scale, the fusion of old and new is never far. From every angle, guests can view the fireplace in their room, an ode to the focal point of traditional Montenegrin homes where families would gather around the fire for cooking, warmth and bringing the community together. Even the crisp cream buildings are topped by tiles in varying shades of terracotta, blending right in with the historic old towns that dot the waterfront. Room rates in June start from Dhs4,078 per night. oneandonlyresorts.com

Nikki Beach Montenegro
Contemporary and cutting-edge Nikki Beach – a hedonistic beach club brand that’s expanded into upscale resorts in recent years – brings its effervescent approach to luxury lifestyle experiences to an otherwise unassuming stretch of homely villas, pebble beaches and national parks at Tivat Bay. The voguish resort – complete with extensive spa and bohemian-luxe beach club – should clash with its serene coastal surroundings, yet somehow it fits in effortlessly. Perhaps it’s the carefully curated colour palette: varying shades of seafoam, endless cream hues and an impossibly large collection of pampas that blend into the bay. Perhaps it’s the way hotel guests and weekenders flock to the thumping beats of the weekend parties at the tropically adorned beach club, a split-level space that serves as Nikki Beach Montenegro’s beating heart. A long swimming pool with a catwalk through the middle is enveloped by plush white days beds and fourposter cabanas, crowned with a DJ booth backdropped by the craggy mountain peaks, where lively beats spin from the decks and reverberate into the calmness of the bay. Alongside
the beach club, the property is also home to a Nikki Beach Restaurant, where guests fill their plates with globally influenced fare. The menu takes inspiration from Nikki Beach locations across the world, anchored by local ingredients and seasonal produce. Tartares of tuna, beef and freshly caught local fish feature alongside a lobster and crabmeat salad, Adriatic sea bass and beef cuts with saffron risotto. But away from the hedonism of the restaurant and beach club, the Nikki Spa is a haven of relaxation. From treatment rooms where you can meld into firm massages to an indoor pool backed by mountain vistas for getting your laps in, it’s all about finding your inner zen. Room rates in June start from Dhs1,353 per night.

Catovica Mlini
A 200-year-old converted mill is the unique location of this cosy tavern restaurant, found in the small town of Morinj. A celebration of the finest local ingredients and a slower pace of life, the menu features dishes like a saffron and shrimp risotto, salted sardines and monkfish kebabs. catovica-mlini.com
Kiki’s Lustica Bay
In the more modern seaside town of Lustica Bay is Kiki’s, consistently ranked among Montenegro’s best restaurants. Perched on the promenade, this romantic restaurant is a charming addition to the array of restaurants, bars and coffee shops that line the water’s edge in this sought-after spot. The distinctly Mediterranean menu shines a light on modern gastronomy but presents it in a relaxed way that feels warm and inviting.

paradise
Ever flown home from a holiday feeling more depleted than you did when you left? Consider booking a sunshine escape to Sri Lanka’s Makahiya –a retreat that will actually rejuvenate you, physically as well as mentally…
Think of Sri Lanka and you probably imagine yourself lounging on a beach with a steady supply of cocktails. Not 7am wake-up calls, sweaty bootcamp sessions, ice baths and a booze ban. But if you’re looking for a break – and a holiday that leaves you feeling much better – Makahiya Fitness is for you.
The gorgeous purpose-built fitness centre in Unawatuna has been a labour of love for British couple – and all-round wonderful humans – Lizzy Chitty and James Jones, who moved to Sri Lanka in 2016 to start a new life among palm trees and paddy fields on Lanka’s lush south coast.
The hilltop haven that they’ve built has everything needed for the ultimate fitness getaway. With top-spec workout facilities, including a rooftop yoga shala, stunning infinity pool overlooking Lanka’s lush forests and a full menu of nourishing meals at their wonderful poolside restaurant, Makahiya is the perfect place to push yourself in paradise, and the workouts, setting, ethos and nutritious food are all designed to leave you feeling rejuvenated.
The tropical facility hosts a maximum of 16 guests in a range of eight deluxe digs. Each air-conditioned room is bright, spacious and contemporary, with a private balcony and modern ensuite bathroom. There’s A/C to keep you cool, hot water to wash off the day and ample Wi-Fi by the pool for when the boss wants a word.

Body positive
The daily grind
Those familiar with restriction-based retreats will find Makahiya’s bon-vivant approach refreshing. Unlike other fitness camps that have hectic programming, Makahiya’s exercise regime is relatively loose. Each morning a class begins at 8am and ends around 9.30am. Then there’s another session at 4pm. You’re welcome to fill the gap in between as you please, either by sunbathing by the pool, swimming laps, hitting up a solo workout in the gym, going for a walk or, if you like, heading out to the nearby beach. It’s a perfectly balanced programme that’s rewarding, challenging and still leaves you feeling like you’re on holiday.
Food for fitness
It might sound unusual for a health break, but you’ll never go hungry at Makahiya. The philosophy is to eat fresh and well, and the on-site restaurant is beloved not just by the owners and those on the retreat, but by Lanka’s gym bunny expat crew, who not only join in on the daily boot camp sessions but refuel here too. If you’re on the retreat, breakfast, lunch and dinner is served here every day of your stay where you’ll find a curated menu of nutritious dishes and nourishing drinks. Everyone talks about the protein pancakes as the ultimate breakfast of champions, and don’t be surprised if you order the grilled barramundi with sweet potato mash multiple times for dinner – it’s sublime.
Makahiya is not a weight-loss retreat. In fact, there isn’t even a set of scales on site. Instead, ex-rugby player James, and fitness coach Soph work with you to reframe your attitude to your body, helping you to make positive changes, both physically and mentally. The sessions are designed for all abilities, and the biggest surprise is that it’s fun. From team-based bootcamps that may feature wall balls, box jumps, (less fun) hill runs and sled pulls, to strength and mobility training, the jungle workouts are all sweat fest parties with a full schedule of daily classes, all of which are included in every retreat package.
Away from the bootcamps, Makahiya also has its own bespoke gym with an arsenal of Watson Gym Equipment, custom-made and shipped from the UK, that James reckons rivals any of Dubai’s best gyms. Unlimited access is part of every package, so you can step up whenever the squat rack calls. Plus, everyone receives a complimentary coaching session where the team work with you to set a fitness foundation and tailor the shape of your training for when you’re back home. You can add on more private sessions for just Dhs90 a class.

Makahiya reopens from June 17 with week-long retreats starting and finishing on Saturdays. A one-week retreat starts at Dhs5,027 (or Dhs7,299 based on two people sharing). Prices are all-inclusive. Book now. You won’t regret it. makahiyafitness.com

NH Collection Dubai The Palm
A vibrant new hotel set on the iconic Palm Jumeirah
LOCATION
Located at the far end of Palm West Beach, the NH Collection Dubai The Palm is set back from the main promenade but enjoys direct access to the beach. Its seafacing rooms provide spectacular views of Dubai Marina and the western fronds of Palm Jumeirah, while the ever-popular Nakheel Mall is just a stone’s throw away. It’s a short stroll to the Arabian Gulf and on the horizon is the unmistakable outline of Ain Dubai.
LOOK AND FEEL
Dubai’s first NH Collection hotel is compact but cool. There’s a fun, quirky and playful ambience to the place, with its walls liberally sprinkled with murals and stencil-like depictions of Dubai’s skyline. Those murals include a headscarf-wearing camel in sunglasses and a colourful
portrait of a woman partially obscured by a traditional battoulah. Overall there’s an unmistakable vibrancy to the property, which has made local character and sustainability a priority.
ROOMS
We stay in a Premier Sea View Room with floor-to-ceiling windows at one end. Cosy rather than spacious, it’s bright, breezy and modern. There’s a stylish flair to the room, with its SleepBetter mattress, generous selection of pillows, and sustainable amenities. ‘May the adventures never stop’ is written above our king-size bed and one lens of a camel’s sunglasses doubled up as a mirror. The colour scheme is all soft blue and white tones and the compact ensuite bathroom features a wonderful rain shower.
FACILITIES
Arguably the hotel’s biggest draw is its sunset-facing rooftop infinity pool. Gently following the curvature of the hotel, it boasts everything from floating
loungers to spectacular views of the Dubai Marina skyline. Below and in the near distance is one of the hottest stretches of beach in Dubai, to which guests have easy access. There is also a small beachside pool, as well as a gym, a Soul Senses Spa, and a kids’ club.
FOOD AND DRINK
There are five venues to choose from and opting where to go is something of a dilemma. First up, there’s Maiora, which serves a wide selection of both regional and international dishes. The rooftop infinity pool, meanwhile, is home to Seen Restaurant & Bar, where we sipped on cocktails before heading downstairs to Seven Sports Bar, an industrial-style venue featuring an abundance of large TV screens. We tucked into a wonderful truffle mac and cheese (Dhs60) and a plant-based vegan burger (Dhs60) before embarking on an amusing game of pool. One morning we opted for breakfast at Revo Café, a chic little venue offering everything from shakshuka to Spanish potato tortilla. We opted for eggs royale (Dhs55), before heading to the beach and a relaxing day of doing absolutely nothing.
ROOM RATES
A one-night stay for two in a Premier Sea View Room starts from Dhs766. Rates are inclusive of breakfast.

ATLANTIS THE ROYAL
This new address wants to be the world’s most luxurious hotel. Here’s what it’s like...
An iconic location for an iconic hotel, you’ll find Atlantis
The Royal at the top of the Palm Jumeirah. It’s separated from sister hotel Atlantis, The Palm by the world’s largest waterpark.
Where neighbouring Atlantis, The Palm is a palatial pink beacon of Arabian grandeur, Atlantis The Royal is the antithesis in terms of aesthetic. The design can best be described as posh blocks of Lego stacked on top of each other to create a futuristic, two-tower emporium connected in the middle by a stretching sky pool. Inside, the hotel adopts an equally contemporary feel, adorned in varying shades of oceanic blue and soft sea spray, laced with shimmering gold accents. Those typical Dubai touches exist on steroids throughout Atlantis The Royal, from the fire breathing water features in the lobby, to the mesmerising water fountain in the grounds.
There are two options for the entry level guest rooms – either ocean- or palm-facing – and we’d recommend palm. Whichever room you pick though, expect to soak up the views from your private balcony, make a splash in the generous circular tub, and get polished and preened with all-gold amenities, including gold toothbrushes.
It’s hard to imagine being bored at Atlantis The Royal. For those that like to drop-and-flop, a private stretch of sand and
temperature-controlled royal pool await, lined with loungers and cabanas aplenty. A more VIP twist on the classic hotel pool day can be enjoyed at Nobu by the Beach, the brand’s first beach club, where tan-toppers can listen to chilled DJ sets and graze on Nobu signatures. Twenty-two floors above, there’s the awe-inspiring Cloud 22, where guests can take a dip against the backdrop of dazzling city vistas, retreat to the shade of a plush cabana, and sip masterfully mixed cocktails at the swim-up bar.
A burgeoning culinary array of no less than 17 restaurants caters to guests. A star-studded celebrity chef line-up includes Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner by Heston, Jaleo by José Andrés and La Mar, an iteration of chef Gastón Acurio’s famed Peruvian restaurant. For high-energy dining, Ling Ling ticks all the boxes with upscale Asian dishes. Then there’s more casual eateries including Seascapes, a breezy sundowner bar by the ocean; all-day dining restaurant, Gastronomy; and an American diner called Malibu. But even these have been given a royal touch through chic decor and menus that extend far beyond the basics. Take breakfast at Gastronomy, where global cuisines from around the world fill buffet counters and live cooking stations offer made-to-order eggs a dozen ways, that can be upgraded with the likes of truffle or caviar. It’s impossible to dine your way around them all in a weekend.
Room rates start from Dhs2,450 per night inclusive of breakfast and access to Lost Chambers Aquarium and Aquaventure Waterpark.

TRAVEL GUIDE 2023 11
QASR AL SARAB DESERT RESORT BY ANANTARA
A true oasis of luxury in Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter...
Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is an unashamedly palatial oasis, a true ‘sand castle’ overlooked on all sides by towering dunes. It’s known as a luxury retreat for the international travel market’s seclusion seekers, offering premium pampering, walkabout wellness journeys, bedouin-inspired experiences and royal court-level service. But we wanted to check in, and check out just how well it functions as a staycation setting for families.
The journey to Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is an incantation, it’s part of the resort’s spell, contributing in no small part to the experiential sense of exclusivity and secluded allure. It’s two hours from Downtown Abu Dhabi (and three hours from Dubai), along desert roads that chase an ocean of rising and crashing sand through the Empty Quarter. On your journey, way beyond the clawing shadows of skyscrapers you’ll cross over the latitudinal parallel marking the Tropic of Cancer.
UAE desert hotels represent some of the most spectacular ‘getting-away-from-it-all’ vacation opportunities available anywhere in the world. They’re a rare breed, in scenery and in the level of juxtaposition between home and holiday. And Qasr Al Sarab is perhaps the truest archetype of these sorts of resort.
This desert chateau holds 140 rooms, 14 suites and 53 pool villas (we stayed in the latter). The design themes from the hotel’s communal areas continue into the private quarters, with exquisite finishes and a romantic reverence for the bedouin lifestyle. Large private plunge pools sit in the rear of the villa and offer panoramic views of the surrounding desertscape.
Relaxation is the chief mantra at casa Qasr. And whatever that means to you. There’s plenty on offer at the spa, beyond the usual treatments and massages, a traditional Moroccan hammam with marble beds for example; an ice room; Biologique Recherchetrained therapists; desert yoga sessions; sunset meditation and more. There is a huge (supervised) kid’s club, a teen’s club, gym, padel courts and swimming pools. Desert specific activities include sandsurfing, camel riding, nature trekking, star gazing, dune buggying, archery, falconry and saluki shows, fat biking, horse riding and an alfresco cinema.
Following a comprehensive menu glow up at the hands of a locally based cheffing legend, the recently relaunched Al Falaj by Dina Macki is now serving regionally inspired aromatic awe on majlis style seating, under the stars.
Pro tip: There’s a page of special offers on the anantara.com with discounted room rates for GCC residents, bonus added extras and some attractive package inclusions. But even just going off the standard rates, you can pick up villas from around Dhs4,000, suites from Dhs3,200 and rooms from less than Dhs2,000. This isn’t shoestring budget territory, but when you compare it to similar properties, it genuinely does translate into fantastic value.

THE RITZ-CARLTON RAS AL KHAIMAH, AL HAMRA BEACH
Book in for a luxurious and tropical beach escape – no plane ticket required
Few places in the UAE really offer supreme privacy quite like The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Hamra Beach. Made up of 32 exclusive private villas with private pools, the boutique hotel offers an exclusive escape 90 minutes from Dubai.
Close to Al Marjan Island, Al Hamra Beach feels very secluded, yet is conveniently located only a short five-minute drive away from shops and amenities. The drive from Dubai flies by, and the arrival experience begins with a five-minute boat ride to the welcome jetty. Technically the hotel isn’t on an island, but this clever tactic sure makes it feel that way.
Villas are lined up along a winding path, surrounded by high white walls and an abundance of lush greenery to create a completely private setting. The beach is vast and peaceful, and guests can enjoy a range of water sports, including kayaking. The resort is long, so if your room is at the far end, you’ll need to call the buggy to get to the restaurant or lobby.
The villas are inspired by Bedouin tents – if Bedouins had impeccable taste and were partial to chic monochrome furniture. We stayed in an Al Shamal Ocean View Villa, which has a large four poster bed complete with sheer white curtains, facing a black and white leather storage unit from where a flat screen
TV rises out. There’s a large bay window with a spacious reading nook, and a tray set up on arrival for us to DIY our own cocktails. Every inch of the space oozes with luxury and all details have been considered to make guests feel at home.
Al Hamra Beach is the type of resort where you really escape from the world, so expect to spend the majority of your stay in your villa. It comes with a private pool, outdoor shower, and bathtub, as well as a long path leading towards the beach, and a sundeck at the end to watch the sunset. The pool is perfectly chilled and reaches a depth of 1.3 metres so you can properly submerge and relax, before making your way to the cabana for a spot of sunbathing. An Instagrammable floating breakfast was served not long after sunrise, on a wicker tray that balances on the water with a selection of exotic fruits, eggs, coffee, pancakes, French toast and more.
The resort has just the one restaurant, Shore House, a nautical themed all-day diner serving a variety of international dishes. Well-presented and tasty, the food is clearly an important focus for the team, ensuring that the menu includes something for everyone, from pasta and risotto to steak and seafood.
A night in the Al Bahar Tented Villa during June starts from Dhs1,680, including breakfast, beach access and private pool.

FOUR SEASONS RESORT DUBAI AT JUMEIRAH BEACH
Four Seasons Resort at Jumeirah Beach remains one of Dubai’s most luxurious staycations. Facilities are plentiful, dining is top-notch, and the discreet but thoughtful service remains the jewel in the crown at this near-faultless beachfront address.
In its unmistakable shade of sand, this low-rise resort unrolls along the golden beach in Jumeirah 2. Widely regarded as one of Dubai’s most luxurious stays, Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach is an oasis of beachfront bliss, consistently accoladed as a leading light in the city’s luxury hotel scene. This resort’s array of stylish rooms and suites, dozen dining options and facilities aplenty ensure guests of all ages that check-in receive the five-star Four Seasons treatment.
With sweeping city vistas on one side and a sandy beach that rolls into the Arabian Gulf on the other, Four Seasons Resort Dubai is ideally located to offer a taste of the city while still serving as an idyllic beachfront address. A mere 10-minute drive away and you’re in the heart of Downtown, where Dubai’s star attractions are all within easy reach.
Guest rooms are split between east and west wings, a duo of lagoon-like swimming pools are set amongst lush, landscaped gardens, and just when you think you’ve dined around all of
the restaurants and bars – you realise there’s an entire village of them a short stroll away in the Restaurant Village.
A continuation of the gentle fusion of Middle Eastern splendour and contemporary elegance seen across many of the public spaces, the recently refurbished suites at Four Seasons Resort at Jumeirah Beach are a welcome upgrade. The suites –already luxurious in the fact that they’re among the biggest in the city – somehow feel even larger in modern, oceanic shades. Plush carpets offer a delicate foot hug, crisp cotton sheets are impossibly comfy, and light drapes billow softly in the breeze when the French windows open. The bathroom deserves a mention for its huge free-standing tub and waffle robes.
The extensive breakfast buffet set the tone for the spoiling array of dining options guests have here. A maze of buffet stations range from continental classics to staple breakfast dishes from India, southeast Asia and Europe, while live stations of eggs and waffles are complemented by a juice bar serving everything from healthy shots to Bloody Mary’s or protein shakes. Seaside dining doesn’t get much chicer than at Sea Fu, where pan-Asian fare is expertly crafted and designed to share while soaking up views of the sea. For a romantic evening of drinks and dining, rooftop Mercury Lounge is an after-hours delight for master mixology and grazing plates. Then there’s the array of internationally-imported and locally-renowned names that populate the Restaurant Village, just two minutes’ walk away from the resort. At Coya, enjoy a masterclass in upscale Peruvian dining, while Scalini is a fail-safe spot for Italian classics and Mimi Kakushi is one of Dubai’s finest restaurants.
A one-night stay for two in a deluxe city-view room starts from Dhs2,100 for the room only, or Dhs2,400 inclusive of breakfast. Four Seasons Resort at Jumeirah Beach, Jumeirah 2, Dubai. Tel: (0)4 270 7777. fourseasons.com/dubaijb

STAYCATIONS | FOUR SEASONS JUMEIRAH BEACH
A beachside paradise worth splashing out on
PARK HYATT ABU DHABI HOTEL AND VILLAS
An island escape that feels almost international
We all know why we book a staycation, it’s to try and get as close to the real thing, even if just for a weekend, without leaving the country. So, in our eternal search for that convincingly ‘abroad’ feeling, we packed our car and headed up to Saadiyat Island. While the beachfront is well-known for its crystal-clear water, it really must be seen to be believed. The almost-Maldivian sea is the most perfect shade of light blue, and more than passes the ‘can you see the bottom?’ test.
We’re checking into Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, where for just a weekend, we’ll be switching off from the hustle and bustle of city life and relaxing at this luxe beachfront hotel. Upon entering our room, a fresh coconut is waiting for us, and we quickly get comfortable on the balcony, taking in the oceanic air and calming sea view. It’s a spacious room with a king bed, large bathroom, and a walk-in wardrobe. The bed has been decorated with rose petals ahead of our arrival – it’s the little things.
The well-lit lobby is broad and modern, with an Arabian feel. In the evenings, a DJ takes centre stage to set the mood for the rest of the night. Over the mezzanine, guests can spy a huge
infinity pool stretching out towards the beach.
The pristine sand beach is vast and lengthy, shared with a few other five-star resorts on the island. We would’ve liked the sun loungers to be placed a little closer to the ocean though, especially in peak summer when the floor becomes actual lava. The pool is a more convenient alternative, with plenty of chic cabanas surrounding it.
Home to Argentinian restaurant, Maté, Park Hyatt’s main sell is the two-storey Latin American concept, where guests can enjoy grilled dishes from the parrilla. In the morning, breakfast is served buffet-style at The Café. Other options include Shala Beach Lounge, The Beach House and The Library.
A king bed room with sea view starts at Dhs1,055 per night in June. The room includes a furnished private balcony overlooking the Arabian Gulf.

One Hundred Shoreditch
When Ace Hotel closed its doors during the early days of the pandemic, it left a hole in oh-so-cool Shoreditch for a design-centric lifestyle hotel. We’re happy to report that One Hundred Shoreditch, which opened last year, has more than filled that void. While the location may be the initial draw: the delights of the East End and thriving city centre are both with easy reach, there’s much more to this stay. Generously sized guest rooms are minimalistic and bathed in natural light, the lobby doubles up as a co-working space, and a duo of bars – one on the roof and one in the basement – each present an alluring menu of liquid libations.

STRAIGHT FROM THE EXPERT’S MOUTH
Q&A with Mike Mpuche, a field guide at Singita Pamushana in Zimbabwe.
How did you become a safari guide?
I was born in Zimbabwe, on the shores of Lake Chivero National Park, where my Father used to work. I spent most of my school holidays with him at one of the first luxury safari lodges in Zimbabwe, so I went on many game drives as a youngster where I fell in love with bush and the seed was planted. In my family of five boys and one girl, all my brothers are safari guides, and my sister is married to a guide. It runs in the family!
What is the wildest thing you’ve ever seen on a game drive?
A brown snake eagle teaching its juvenile how to hunt and kill a snake. It was fascinating to watch the parent teaching it how to attack the snake.
If you could be any animal for a day, what animal would you be?
I would be an elephant. I think they are the king of the jungle, an intelligent herd animal; very good communicators; family-oriented with sophisticated family structures and you can observe them being kind to each other.
Set realistic expectations. Some days you might see plenty of animals and other days less.
Be prepared to be around creepy crawlies – you are in the wild, after all.

Switzerland is known for chocolate box mountainscape, but at the heart of it all Zurich is the city that keeps the country ticking…
Words: Miles Buckeridge
Zurich in the summertime
Winter sports enthusiasts are likely well acquainted with such sophisticated Swiss slope situs as Zermatt, St. Moritz and Grindelwald. They’re home to some of the world’s best known and most exciting ski experiences, as well as glitzy-ritzy off-piste apresski opportunities. Less well known however, are the native charms of Zurich in the summertime. Between June and August, the lakefront city blossoms under the sun and fresh mountain air, giving way to one of Europe’s best kept secrets.
Alfresco disco
Held in multiple locations, across a variety of musical genres – Zurich transforms into an open-air auditorium in the summer months. Hosting festivals such as June’s Blues’N’Jazz Rapperswil sessions at Lake Zurich, the free-to-see Stadtsommer series in July, and Werdinsel Openair on Werd Island in August. Because beats just bang that bit harder in the great outdoors.
Grape escapes
Take a hike pal
Zurich may be a city, but within its surrounds there are many ways to reconnect with nature in a visceral wholesome way. Head to one of the local ravines – we’d recommend Elefantenbachweg, accessible by the Burgwies tram stop. Here you can soak up the endless serene greens, leaf through books under the shade of trees, leap across melt water streams, or saddle up for an appropriate use of your mountain bike.
Switzerland’s F&B reputation is largely built on a mountain of chocolate, with strong supporting roles from fondue and raclette. But you’re missing out if you don’t trace their wine producing story back to its source. Many of the world class vineyards are open to the public, and offer tasting experiences so you can wax whimsical on what notes of honey and juniper you’re getting. Zweifel Winery is a family run business with a 600-year-old legacy and its vines enjoy some absolutely vintage views.

FIVE Zurich
Yes, that FIVE. You can count on one hand the number of UAE residents that don’t know this luxury leisure icon (spoiler, it’ll likely be less than five). Yes the five-star, five-gun salute to the high life, FIVE now has a mega luxe pied-à-terre in Zurich. It’s home to 45 suites, 42 suite-sized lifestyle rooms, 62 ‘Amazing Rooms’, multiple international award-winning restaurants, a vibe tribe approved rooftop nightclub, outdoor social pool and lavish wellness spa with indoor pool and hot tub. Of course you can expect the same elite tier of service and attention to detail exemplified by the Dubai locations, but this first foray abroad comes with Zurich city views from the Uetliberg plateau and status as Swizerland’s only LEED Platinum hotel.

La Réserve Eden au Lac
This century old grand dame of the Lake Zurich waterfront looks plucked from the run time of a Wes Anderson masterpiece. An artistic building, with tasteful modern rooms, design touches such as glass elevators and city famous restaurants, La Réserve Eden au Lac feels a million miles away from the frantic urban energy of the UAE.
@lareserve_edenaulac_zurich
Park Hyatt Zurich
Caught between the Old Town and Lake Zurich, this Swiss stunner provides easy access to the Bahnhofstrasse shopping district. It’s unashamedly modern and comes with a gym, steam room, sauna and other wellness facilities. F&B highlights involve the popular Onyx Bar and Parkhuus Restaurant.

DINING OUT
What to expect:
Climate: Few places have quite the literal glow up as Switzerland in the summertime.
Sound of Music vistas meet continental summer highs of 23ºC to 25ºC. Note though, rains can be sudden, heavy and stormy.
Language: Switzerland has four official languages (Romansh, French, German and Italian). But as you might expect from multi-linguists, English is widely spoken.
Currency: Not the Euro. Five points to everyone who said Swiss Franc.
MAISON MANESSE
This trendy haunt holds one of the Michelin Guide’s coveted Green Stars (for sustainable practices). Dining takes places in an artfully rustic pub setting, with comprehensive vegan and vegetarian menu options served alongside the omnivorous versions. The kitchen craft is creative, without being obnoxious, making it a worthwhile stop for adventurous foodies.
@maisonmanesse
SWISS CHUCHI
We’ve grown kind of fondue that European style of DIY hot pot dining experience that lets you cook in oil or cheese. And you’ll find few melting pots in the city that have quite the reputation of the Swiss Chuchi. It offers a huge range of cheese and meat fondue varieties as well as the traditional raclette serving ritual.
@swisschuchi
SKIN’S – THE RESTAURANT
Our recommendation for an extravagant splurge, Skin’s is contained within an old factory and is named after the skinmed clinic it sits slap bang next to. It’s a two Michellin Star restaurant with a young and (ahem) hungry kitchen team that proudly blends tradition with modern world influences and has some pretty gnarly ideas on the future of surf ‘n’ turf.

64 TRAVEL GUIDE 2023 LONG HAUL | ZURICH
Destination: Tuscany, Italy
This summer, I am heading to the Tuscan Hills as the one-year countdown to my wedding begins. We’ll be saying “I do” at Dievole Wine Resort, a charming hotel and vineyard in Chianti. I’ve got a particularly romantic attachment to this stunning slice of Italian countryside, as it’s where we also travelled to on our first vacation, and got engaged four years later.
– Alice Holtham, Group Editor
Destination: Athens, Greece
We’ve started slapping on stopovers on the way back from our summer trip home (to the UK). This year, our sights are set on that crucible of democracy, western society and salads with feta in them –Athens. I’m a history nerd, a huge fan of Greek food, and the idea of smashing plates without losing deposits appeals to the rest of the family – so it really is an ‘all-win’ scenario.
– Miles Buckeridge, Senior Online Reporter
Destination: Seoul, South Korea
Since I’m into Korean drama, I tend to adapt to their culture from food to fashion to music. So, every time I watch K-Drama I dream of travelling to Seoul, Korea and exploring some of the Mapo district, which is famous for its traditional Korean BBQ restaurants. I can’t wait to try their speciality dishes, such as charcoalgrilled pork and aged kimchi, then visit a traditional pub and go for a market tour with my family.
– Sheila Deocareza, Art Director
Destination: Cyprus
Nothing quite says ‘summer vaycay’ like lounging around on European island Cyprus. I’ll be checking out the stunning scenery, coupled with the country’s incredible history and, of course, gorgeous beaches to top up my tan before I return to the sauna that is Dubai. –
Shelby Gee,
Junior Reporter
Destination: Bali, Indonesia
After my 2020 Bali travel plans never came to fruition, I’m still desperate to go. This summer will finally be the time I get to visit the beautiful rice fields, incredible beaches, trendy beach clubs, and stay in a huge villa. My only concern is that I won’t want to come back!
– Elise Kerr, Deputy Editor
Destination: Florence, Italy
My love for renaissance art is one of the sole reasons I would visit Florence. From paintings and sculptures, the galleries and museums, the cathedrals (high on my list is the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore) and so much more, I plan to soak in as much as I can. And while I’m there, I will, of course, indulge in as much divine Italian food as possible from pasta to pizza and all the tiramisu. –
Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
Destination: Dubai, UAE
Dare I say it, I rather enjoy summer in Dubai. There’s the discounted pool and hotel deals, plenty of indoor familyfun, quieter shopping malls, day trips to Fujairah (where the sea is always that bit cooler) and making the most of the early mornings and late evenings. Bliss! –
Tamara Wright, Online Reporter
Destination: Brazil
I have dreamt about going to South America for the last five years, and this summer, long after our pandemic stress, I will finally be going to Brazil. This luscious, exotic and vibrant country has always fascinated me, with its beautiful coastal towns and cities, tropical islands, Portuguese culture and bosa nova music. I’ll be travelling from the south, passing through Rio, and up to the north to the pristine beaches of Itacaré. I can’t wait.
