Welcome to the September issue
Can you believe it? This month we’re celebrating 20 years of the magazine – that’s 240 issues! Here we are, two decades later, still landing on doormats every month. It’s such a huge milestone for us, and we couldn’t let it pass without saying the biggest thank you.
Thank you to you, our readers, for picking us up each month and making us part of your lives. Thank you to our advertisers, who’ve supported us year after year and kept this little community magazine thriving. Thank you to our brilliant delivery teams, who’ve braved all weathers to make sure every copy finds its way through your letterbox. And a special thank you to our wonderful contributors – some of whom have been with us since the very beginning.
September always brings a bit of a change of pace, doesn’t it? The kids are back to school, students are heading off to college and university, and suddenly the calendar starts filling up again. Autumn’s here, the air’s turning fresher, and there’s so much to look forward to locally over the coming months. We’ll be keeping you posted on it all, as always.
So here’s to 20 years, and with your continued support, many more to come, we couldn’t have done it without you. Have a fantastic September, take care, and we’ll see you again in October!

MUSIC FROM THE MOVIES
The afternoon concert on a hot August Sunday was well attended and the brilliant musicianship of Roger Cletheroe greatly appreciated.
£600 was collected to support the work of St Nicholas Hospice.
Over four days towards the end of August, the Centre was buzzing in the morning with large numbers of children enjoying Southgate Church’s legendary
Holiday Club. Alison Lovejoy and her all-age band of helpers gave everyone attending a fun time with songs, games, crafts, puppet shows - as well as learning a bit more about Jesus.
To reflect the theme of the seaside, a beach party was held on Friday evening for all the families of the children taking part to experience what had been happening all week.

From High Sheriff to Patron
Mark Pendlington DL joins Bury Drop In to help build on a decade of impact.
Bury Drop In is delighted to announce that Mark Pendlington DL has joined the charity as Patron during our landmark 10th anniversary year, marking a decade of dedicated service to people facing homelessness in Bury St Edmunds.
Mark is no stranger to our work. In 2023/2024, during his tenure as High Sheriff of Suffolk, he selected Bury Drop In for one of his prestigious High Sheriff Awards, recognising the charity’s outstanding service to the community. His decision to now serve as Patron reflects his ongoing commitment to supporting homeless and vulnerably housed people. Mark has extensive working experience across public and private sectors, including industry, voluntary organisations, education, economic development, and academia. On Suffolk Day in June, Mark was awarded the Suffolk Medal to recognise his many years of service to the county.
Founded in 2015, Bury Drop In has become a trusted lifeline for people in Bury St Edmunds who are homeless or vulnerably housed, providing nutritious meals, emergency

provisions, signposting to specialist support, and a safe space.
One guest, Ben (name changed for privacy), recalls how Bury Drop In has supported him “The volunteers are kind, always ask how I’m doing, and the food and vouchers helped me survive. But most of all, it’s the support to connect with services that has made the difference.”
Mark Pendlington DL said: “I am delighted to become Patron of Bury Drop In and to help support those who are among the most vulnerable in society. I am inspired by the amazing work of the dedicated professional team and volunteers, who are joined by many partner organisations in offering a trusted, secure and safe environment for
those most in need. It is a privilege to be part of this very special team.”
Robert Green, chair of trustees, said: “We are honoured and delighted to welcome Mark as our Patron. His recognition last year was a tremendous encouragement to our team and guests. Mark’s passion for Bury Drop In, combined with his expertise, will help us strengthen our impact for years to come.”
The charity will be celebrating its 10th anniversary throughout the year with a series of events, stories, and a special anniversary report; celebrating the charity through the words and photos of volunteers, guests and supporters — all aimed at raising awareness of homelessness and inspiring local action.

Moreton Hall WI
In August, we met for a Picnic in the Park to celebrate 110 years of the WI. The sun shone, there was good food, laughter and friendship and, of course,

it wouldn’t be the WI without cake.
Back in 1915 the WI was founded to give women a voice and be a force for good in the community. So much has changed but the WI still offers a space for women to meet, make friends and support each other and make a difference to the community.
Fancy joining us? Come along to our September meeting.

Why David gives every month – and how it’s helping patients at West Suffolk Hospital

By Sally Daniels, My WiSH Charity grants and appeals manager
At My WiSH Charity, we often say that it’s the little things that make the biggest difference, and nothing reflects that more than the work we’ve been able to do through our Butterfly Appeal.
Launched in 2019 with support from the Bury Free Press, the Butterfly Appeal aimed to raise £340,000 to create a dedicated indoor space and beautiful garden at West Suffolk Hospital. We wanted to give end-oflife patients a calm, private place where they could spend precious time with their loved ones.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, we opened the Butterfly Garden in 2023, and it’s already making a lasting impact. It’s hosted weddings, reunited patients with their pets, and given grieving families somewhere peaceful to reflect. It has also provided a change of scenery for

patients who have been on a ward for some time. But our work doesn’t stop there. The Butterfly Appeal continues today, funding meaningful additions that bring comfort when it’s needed most. These include comfort packs for families who arrive unexpectedly, ready beds so loved ones can stay overnight, scenic screens for privacy and dignity, and handmade
blankets and knitted bears - crafted by the brilliant Blanketeer group.
One supporter who’s helping to make this possible is David Wright, a retired marketing director, who moved to Bury St Edmunds to be closer to his family. David told us West Suffolk Hospital has a warmth that sets it apart. It reminded him of a cottage

Knitted blankets and bears in the Butterfly Room
hospital, welcoming and kind. After discovering My WiSH on a hospital visit, he decided to give monthly to our Butterfly Appeal.
He’s already raised £870 through his regular donations and says that knowing he’s helping local people makes it all worthwhile. What’s more, the messages of thanks he receives from our team reinforce that his generosity is making a genuine difference.
David’s story is a powerful reminder of what regular giving can do. Monthly donations allow us to plan ahead, respond quickly

To

when needs arise, and continue projects like the Butterfly Appeal well into the future.
If you’ve ever thought about supporting your local NHS charity, I’d encourage you to consider becoming a regular giver. Every pound adds up, helping us go that little bit further to enhance care for patients and their families when it matters most.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School
Welcome to a new school year at Hardwick and especially to our new Reception children and their families, we hope everyone had a fantastic summer break and some great holiday experiences.
As we look forward to an exciting new term lets reflect on what an amazing time was had at the end of last year, so many memorable happenings and activities.
Never to be forgotten was the simply brilliant UKS2 production of Olivia Twist, with many goosebump moments, stunning solos and great acting, one of Hardwick’s best performances. Then the children were able to have some hugely enjoyable out of classroom adventures with not just one but four excursions part funded by the Friends of Hardwick Primary School (FoHPS).
Firstly there was the Musical Theatre Group led by the amazing Miss Weller Poley who sang their hearts out at the Snape Maltings Concert Hall supported by Mrs Manning and Mrs Suttle, months of dedicated rehearsals paid off and making Hardwick proud.
Then different year groups excitedly boarded coaches to Jimmy’s Farm, Chadacre and the Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse Victorian Activity Day, such valuable and worthwhile educational

activities very much enjoyed by the children.
Finally it was sad as we had to say goodbye to our outstanding Year 6 cohort and wish them well on their secondary school journey and also to some long serving staff, some retiring, and some embarking on new exciting chapters.
A special farewell to Head of School Mrs Cowling after many years of compassionate loyal service to Hardwick, her dedication and warmth has made such a difference to the lives of so many children and their families.
By Andy Abbott Governor and FoHPS Chairman

CPSG ARE A WARM AND WELCOMING, FRIENDLY BUNCH OF PEOPLE…
Summer break is now behind us, Autumn is upon us and CPSG regroups for the latter part of the year, starting with Positively Crafty whereby we will be looking ahead to Christmas.
CPSG are a warm and welcoming, friendly bunch of people who come together to enjoy their time out, have a laugh and not think about their pain. So don’t be alone, come and be surrounded by friends,
people who understand what you are going through. Join us anytime to see for yourself.
The reality of an invisible illness is about what you see and what you don’t see. Chronic pain is debilitating and time after time people are discriminated against. Until you walk in their shoes do you have the right to judge them? Surely they are as much entitled to live their lives in the best way possible, as any other person, despite their inabilities.
DIARY DATES

SOMEONE ONCE ASKED THE QUESTION:
‘What tools assist you in your day-to-day’ life. Whilst nervously responding came the interruption ‘what about a radio’. A radio, who knew that something taken for granted, is apparently a welcome distraction for people in pain more so than the useful implements purchased/borrowed/been given. Whilst this may help some it may not help all. We are all unique individuals and on our journey of self-discovery and selfmanaging our pain we find out/learn what works for us. Interesting though what crops up when least expected and believed to be a helpful tip or is it?

Positively Crafty – Thursday 4th September from 1.30pm-4pm
Coffee Morning – Monday 8th September from 10.30am at The Dragonfly Hotel

Tomato, Red Wine & Chorizo Risotto
Ingredients:
Olive oil
2 shallots
1 clove of garlic
80g higher-welfare chorizo
1/2 a bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley, (15g)
750ml–1 litre of organic chicken or vegetable stock
1 x 400 g tin of quality plum tomatoes
300g risotto rice
200ml red wine
50g Parmesan cheese, plus extra to serve
sponsored by

Topped with Parmesan & fresh parsley
Method:
Peel and finely chop the shallots and garlic, finely chop the chorizo, then pick and finely chop the parsley leaves, finely chopping the stalks.
Drizzle 2 tablespoons of olive oil into a wide, shallow pan. Add the parsley stalks, shallot, garlic and chorizo to the heated oil and cook over a medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, or until the shallot is softened and the chorizo is beginning to crisp.
In another pan, heat the stock with the tinned tomatoes. Add the rice to the shallot mixture and stir to coat the grains. Cook over a high heat for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the grains have cracked and are slightly translucent at the tips, then pour in the red wine.
Stir well and cook until almost all the wine has evaporated. Add the hot stock and tomato mixture, ladle by ladle, stirring well with each addition, and only adding more when the previous ladle is almost fully absorbed. You may not need all of the mixture, or you may need to top it up with a little water.
The rice should be tender but with a little bite in the middle. When it’s cooked, add one last ladle of liquid.
Finely grate the Parmesan, then add to the pan with some seasoning. Stir well, take off the heat and cover. Leave for 5 minutes or so before stirring again, tasting and adjusting the seasoning, if necessary.
Serve topped with extra grated Parmesan and the chopped parsley leaves.

Craft Corner

If you like this column why not book on my Halloween workshops at The Apex in October half term.
Welcome to my crafty column! Every month I share a crafty activity for you to try at home. Check out my facebook page for more info www.facebook.com/thecraftyfoxes or visit www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk Michelle x
This months’ make is for the garden or a window sill. Make a recycled sun catcher.
You will need a piece of clear food packaging, some scissors, a hole punch, some pva glue and flowers from your garden. Optional extras are a branch some small hooks.
Draw around a jam jar lid or glass and cut the circle out
Punch a hole in the top
Cover with a thin layer of pva glue.
Glue your flowers and leaves on and press firmly
When dry, coat with a top layer of pva glue
Repeat as many times as you wish
Screw some hooks along the branch you have found and hook your sun catchers on
Hang the branch from a window or outside on a tree by tying string to both ends of the branch.
TOP TIP…

The less glue you use the more see through your sun catcher will be. If you don’t have flowers see how many unusual leaves you can find on a country walk and use them.

BURY ST EDMUNDS
Cricket Club
As the 2025 cricket season reaches its conclusion we can report an immense amount of activity at Bury St Edmunds.
As always a mixture of success and disappointment, but it is enabling a large number of players, men, women, boys and girls
to enjoy the sport which is at the heart of the clubs role in the local community.
None of this would be possible without the help of volunteers who are essential to maintaining the club on and off the field.
Junior cricket continues to thrive thanks to the many coaches who give up their time to encourage young players in particular to play cricket.
The highlight has been the excellent season of the Saturday 2nd team who at this stage with 4 games remaining sit second in the Two Counties Division Two. We do not know what the final position will be but a team featuring many young players has had an excellent season.
The first team have had a mixed season with some good and some disappointing games but that is the nature of cricket.

Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church

This is quite a hard one for me, as I know I would want my grandparents, plus their grandparents, my dad, and current family members which only leaves a couple of seats for famous people. I would love Steven Fry, Whitney Houston, Nelson Mandela, and Jesus.
Like most families not everyone is religious, has the same sense of humour, or music tastes; so how would this work? How many big meal gatherings do you go to these days? We can probably think of Christmas, may be Easter, and perhaps a Christening, wedding, or funeral in this mix. But it’s sad that this isn’t the norm each month or week for people to meet. What is interesting is the link these all have with religion.
I had a really special experience 12 years ago, as my mum and I
went to Italy, and booked a time slot to see the painting of the ‘Last Supper’. I am not a follower of art, but when you know the story behind a painting, and it is in the original place it was created, really brings to life what the picture was trying to tell us. On one level it is a group of men having a meal. But when we understand that Jesus explains what is about to happen to him, what the passing of the bread, and the sharing of the wine and what these actually represent, it is like looking into the souls of each disciple and knowing what that meal means to each of them.
I don’t know about you, but most meal times at special occasions, I try and sit next to someone I know. I tend to be very polite and ask lots of questions to whom I am sitting next to. Even if I am
with extended family, I don’t necessarily know much about them and I certainly would not be able to predict how they would treat me in the future. Jesus however chooses his disciples, and yet he knew one of them would betray him (Judas) and another deny him (Peter). He organises a meal even though he understands what the future will bring. This is a real testament to forgiveness.
I pray you can forgive those that betray or deny you, and the bridges you build from this provide a trusting relationship. Perhaps that starts with an invitation to a meal, even without a special occasion being required. Who ever you share food with let it be meaningful and without judgement. (I say that as I try to cook good food most evenings, but it’s not always the best).
If you are anything like me and can’t bear the thought of good food going to waste, then you are the perfect person to join ‘Still Good Food’ to do something about it.

SGF outlets
This charity based in Bury St Edmunds has a multi-pronged attack to help reduce waste. They collect food from supermarkets, receive donations of food from organisations and individuals and visit farms after harvesting to glean unwanted produce. The food is then distributed through 2 outlets as shown below and in addition much of the gleaned food goes out to 16 other organisations in Suffolk and beyond such as food banks, ‘Bury Drop In’ and many more.
Elsey's Yard, Risbygate St, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP33 3AA
Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 10.00am - 12.00 noon Monday & Thursday 2pm - 4pm Great Barton, Freedom Church, Mill Road, Great Barton, IP31 2RU
Wednesday & Thursday 10.00am - 12.00 noon Monday, Tuesday & Friday 2pm - 4pm
The Elsey’s Yard and Freedom Church shops are open to the public, anyone can shop at ‘Still Good Food’ and every time you shop you save good food from being thrown away. Customers helped SGF save over 40 tonnes of food last year!
The shops operate on a 'Pay as you feel' donation system (minimum

There are many opportunities for volunteers, you can help in a shop, collect food from a supermarket or come out to farmers fields to help glean, please see contact details below to learn more. hello@stillgoodfood.org Gleaning - roz@stillgoodfood.org www.stillgoodfood.org
SGF make up to 40 visits a week to local supermarkets to collect surplus food that may have gone beyond it’s ‘Best Before’ date. These dates are about quality not safety, when the date is passed, it doesn’t mean that the food is harmful, but it might begin to lose its flavour and texture. Here’s a big shout out to supermarkets for providing the food but there is still a mountain to climb to help reduce the waste that goes to landfill and incineration.
I have just joined Roz and the gleaning team to help work in the fields to collect as much surplus food as possible, we are now in full harvest mode working with 8 farmers in Suffolk. They call us after harvesting and we are given a window of opportunity to visit the fields and orchards to collect as much produce as possible in the time given. The bulk of the produce being onions,

apples, pears and potatoes. We have a target of 36 tonnes of produce to glean before end of March 2026 so any help is welcome.
If you think your time is better spent working with customers in the shops please do not hesitate to call, again, any help is welcome. This is a great opportunity to make a difference, we look forward to hearing from you.
PS. Thanks to everyone already working and volunteering for SGF.
Do you have any ideas? If so please drop me a line – see details below.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE
Forgive!
A few years ago, when I was the vicar of my previous church, a man in his 70s left his wife for another woman in our congregation. Everyone in our church was truly outraged!
But it was particularly upsetting for the man’s wife; a gentle, kind woman who soon began to burn with anger towards him, because he’d hurt her so deeply. Perhaps you can sympathise with her? After all, she was the victim of a terrible injustice.

But the trouble was that her unforgiveness gradually began to spoil many of her closest relationships. For example, although her grownup children felt her pain, they understandably wanted to maintain contact with their father. Which the lady interpreted as unforgivable disloyalty. At this point, many of her Christian friends encouraged her to try to let go of her unforgiveness for her own sake. But she said “Why should I, he doesn’t deserve my forgiveness!”.
Perhaps you have heard people say: ‘Holding on to unforgiveness is like drinking
poison and expecting the other person to die’. And this was certainly what this lady was doing. So over time, she literally poisoned herself with her own bitterness.
However, the good news is that unforgiveness is one of the things that Jesus came to save us from. Our constant rebellion against God creates a massive barrier between us and him. But on the cross, Jesus took all our sin upon himself and dealt with it by taking the punishment that should have been ours. Which enables us to be totally forgiven and to begin a new life-changing relationship with God that will last forever. What’s more, when you put your faith in Jesus and receive God’s forgiveness, his Spirit comes and lives within your
heart. And from that moment on, you feel a new lightness in your spirit. It’s as though you’ve been unburdened and set free!
But as a new follower of Jesus, God will then encourage you to forgive others, as he has forgiven you. This is one of the hardest parts of being a Christian. But mercifully, God always helps us do the right thing. Which means that when someone hurts you, you can pray. And ask God’s Spirit to help you let go of your anger and forgive them.
Jesus always wants the best for us. Which is why he forgives us and asks us to forgive others.

THE 19TH HOLE
BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH
Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching
Welcome back to the 19th hole, we missed the boat in the August issue so there is a little more to catch up and look forward to this month. July saw another amazing OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP at Royal Portrush and as always we were treated to a great week of competition.
This month is the RYDER CUP!!!!!
For anyone that isn’t aware The Ryder Cup is a biennial men’s golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is contested every two years with the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe.
FORMAT OF PLAY
The Ryder Cup is a match play competition between players selected from two teams of twelve. On Friday and Saturday there are four fourball
matches and four foursomes matches each day; a session of four matches in the morning and a session of four matches in the afternoon. On Sunday, there are 12 singles matches, when all team members play.
The winning team is determined by cumulative total points. In the event of a tie (14 points each) the Ryder Cup is retained by the team who held it before the contest. Europe currently are the holders after their victory in 2023 in Italy.
The Ryder Cup 2025 will take place at Bethpage Black, New York USA. This brutal golf course will be a tough test for both teams. But… how will the US team set up the course?
As I write this. teams have not been confirmed. However, whoever earns their place on the teams or receives a captains pick will show up with only one result in mind. If you have never seen a Ryder Cup make sure you tune in and watch it will be amazing whatever the result… COME ON TEAM EUROPE!!
COACHES CORNER – HIT MID IRON SHOTS PURE!
This month we are looking at iron play, an essential area of the game where better strikes will allow us to be closer to the flag with our approach shots allowing for potential better scores.
When I am teaching, the biggest area I see for inconsistent strikes is having too much body movement throughout the golf swing.
SET UP AND BACKSWING
As you can see from the set up (far left), the chest (sternum) inline with the ball both at address and as the club is moved into the backswing.

This allows for an easier transition into the downswing movement, and more importantly gives a better opportunity to allow the golf club to hit the ground in the same place each time.
If the body weight moves too much in backswing (right for right handed golfer) it will lead to having to make a bigger movement in your down swing. If this large movement is not reversed into impact this can lead to inconsistent strikes.
DOWNSWING MOVEMENT / FEELING
So you’re in a great position at the top of your backswing, now it’s time to strike this iron shot pure.
I just want you to think of moving your body weight or momentum towards the target from this point, resulting in you holding your finish position. This movement is easier from the position you are now easier as you haven’t moved too much in your backswing.
From here all you need to do is watch another great shot find its target.
If you are still struggling with your irons after this, or any other part of your game then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this game more. As this should be the most important aspect for anyone’s round of golf.
DRILL – TWO TEE DRILL
This drill is great to give you the same feeling through impact without the needing the space to hit golf balls.
As you can see from the images, the first tee is positioned where the golf ball would be positioned and then the second tee is positioned around 3 to 4 inches in front of (towards the target) of the first one.

hitting both tee’s as the go through the impact area, being able to do this will ensure you and the club are moving into impact well.
