THURSDAY
Slimming groups are here to stay
EARLY BIRD session – 8am
5.30pm & 7pm
Weight loss drugs can’t replace the power of group support for lasting weight loss, says local expert.
Hall Community Centre 07792 603204
A Slimming World Consultant from Bury St Edmunds says slimming clubs are needed more than ever despite the growing popularity of weight loss medication.
7.30am, 9.30am & 11am
Southgate Community Centre 07355 810381
SATURDAY
8.30am & 10am
While the arrival of weight loss injections like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro have undoubtedly changed the weight management landscape,
She says: “While, of course, we know and our members are living proof that lasting weight loss can be achieved without drugs, we also understand that when you’re desperate to lose weight, it can be tempting to try something new that promises instant results. The truth is though there’s no magic bullet – losing weight and maintaining that weight loss requires change. Weight loss drugs need to go hand-inhand with making changes to your diet, activity and mindset. They’re not a replacement for those changes.”
Southgate Community Centre 07792 603204
Kelly, who runs groups in and around Bury, says the drugs will never replace weight-loss methods based on lifestyle changes, like Slimming World.
First Kelly became a Slimming World member in 2015 after struggling with her weight from her childhood.
A recent University of Oxford study found exactly this. It showed that people who stop taking weight loss drugs typically regained the weight they lost within a year, with full weight regain expected in under two years, if they don’t maintain a healthy lifestyle afterwards.
Kelly says Slimming World’s approach is focused on helping its members to make lasting changes. She says: “Our healthy eating plan encourages members to eat nutritious, everyday food so they lose weight without deprivation, and we have an activity programme that helps members increase how much and how often they move, at their personal pace. In our groups, members get behaviour change support which helps them to understand themselves more deeply as a slimmer and change the way they think about food, activity and their weight. With over 55 years’ expertise in helping people lose weight and transform their lives, we believe Slimming World offers the very best package there is when it comes to helping people to adopt healthy habits for life. That’s why we’re committed to offering support to everyone, including providing wraparound care for members who are taking weight loss drugs alongside attending Slimming World.”
Currently 64 million people in the UK are living with being overweight and obesity. Kelly says: “Many people join our groups after trying to lose
weight beforehand, often alone and unsuccessfully. They understand they need support because it isn’t easy – and it’s even harder on your own. Whether you’re using weight loss medication or have had surgery, lasting change needs real support. My members form strong friendships in group, and there’s nothing quite like the motivation and accountability that comes from losing weight with others who understand the challenges. Being part of a group helps you to stay on track and committed until the changes you’re making become everyday habits.”
Despite more weight loss drugs now being available, a poll of 2,000 adults revealed 69 per cent of adults would still be unlikely to take them. Of those, 25 per cent say they don’t want to change the way they eat, drink and socialise, 21 per cent worried they wouldn’t be getting the nutrition they need for good health and 20 per cent say they love their food too much.
Kelly says: “I often hear from new members how amazed they are that they can lose weight without feeling like they’re missing out. In fact, in a recent survey of our members conducted by OnePoll, 85 per cent told us they were surprised they could lose weight while still eating foods they loved.”

The survey of members of Slimming World’s 13,000 community weight loss groups and online programme found that 89 per cent love losing weight while getting all the nutrients they need. Over three quarters (77 per cent) of members questioned now make healthy, nutritious, filling meals that the whole family enjoys and 76 per cent feel proud that they’re passing on healthy habits to their families. More than half (56 per cent) report being surprised at how quickly they’ve lost weight since joining Slimming World.
Kelly has lost 5 stone since joining Slimming World in 2015 she says: “I’m delighted with my weight loss, it’s something I never dreamed I’d be able to
achieve. While I wouldn’t ever judge someone for going down the route of weight loss injections, I’m personally glad I didn’t choose that option because I feel confident that I’ve learned how to make changes I can keep up forever, so I’ll never go back to the old me.”
“I’ve changed the way I think about food and the expertise shared at group has helped me to see where and why my previous attempts at losing weight didn’t work. Now I know my triggers, I can spot when something might have the potential to send me off track and put a plan in place to protect my weight loss. I’m so grateful to Slimming World.”
Slimming World Consultant Kelly has lost over 5 stone since joining Slimming World.

This Summer, we will be renovating our splendid sprung floor. So, when you book a room, or attend an

We extend our ongoing thanks to our three local councillors: Sarah Stamp, Patrick Chung and Richard Rout for the regular financial support from their budgets, and participation as trustees.
If you would like to be involved in helping to run the Centre, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Moreton Hall WI

Our June meeting was a social evening to celebrate summer with Pimms, Prosecco, strawberries and friends, old and new. We welcomed Margaret Brackenbury back to lead a craft session, and we were kept busy fashioning gift boxes to take home.
Our delegate to the NHWI Annual Meeting gave a report on that meeting when members voted in force to support a major new campaign for 2025/2026 entitled ‘Bystanders Can Be Lifesavers’, aiming to increase CPR and

defibrillator skills across the UK. As a WI we will be considering what we can do to support this, so watch this space!
If you are interested in joining us, come to a meeting to see what goes on. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 2nd July, at 7.30pm at Moreton Hall Community Centre where our speaker will be Jason Middleton.
His talk is entitled ‘Gemstones and Jewellery of the Rich and Famous’ and he will give us a brief look at some of the most luxurious jewels ever, such as those owned by celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Princess Diana as well as information on famous historical jewellery houses such as Faberge and Tiffany.
Tickets are £5 on the door or for more information contact Alison on 07557 005343 or look for us on Facebook.

My WiSH Charity funds boost stroke therapy at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust

From interactive tech and therapy tools to community events and creative activities, My WiSH Charity is proud to support stroke care at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (WSFT) – both on the ward and beyond.
We raise funds to enhance patient care across all areas of WSFT – from cancer and cardiac services to dementia and paediatrics. We also help our incredible NHS colleagues at West Suffolk Hospital, Newmarket Community Hospital, and community services across Suffolk.
Stroke care is just one of the many areas where we’ve made an impact. Thanks to our amazing fundraisers – including NHS staff, patients, and donors from the local community – we’ve been able to make a real difference.
In 2023, the stroke team at West Suffolk Hospital set themselves a fundraising goal to enhance therapy on the ward. Some brave members of the team even took on a charity skydive! Alongside a fundraising bingo night, they raised

over £10,000. With their contributions, we purchased an interactive projector for the stroke ward.
This clever piece of kit is now used every day by therapy teams. It can project onto the walls, floor or a table, allowing patients to play games, answer quizzes,
or even take part in a virtual football match – all of which are proven to benefit physical and cognitive rehabilitation. It can also be wheeled to bedsides, making it accessible to everyone.
Occupational therapist Ellie told us: “Since having this

projector, we’ve found that it helps engage patients –especially those who have become withdrawn or been on the ward for a long time. Even just seeing the sensory elements the projector offers has really changed their mood, it often brings a smile to people’s faces!” The projector is used across physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy for both individual and group sessions.
In May, we were also delighted to support a community stroke event, funding the venue at New Bury Community Centre. Stroke patients, families,
and carers were able to meet members of the multidisciplinary team and hear about life after a stroke, as well as the help available.
Our brilliant volunteers, Sue and Paul, came along to share how My WiSH Charity has helped enhance stroke care. It was great to see so many charities and community groups working together for such an important cause. And that’s not all. Thanks to donations, we’ve also funded wheelchairs, games, crafts, and reminiscence activities – all designed to assist stroke rehabilitation and recovery. Staff have told us these items really help
to encourage conversation, socialising and cognitive activities.
The stroke service at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is something to be incredibly proud of. For over six years, the team has consistently achieved an “A” rating from the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP). In the most recent results, they were ranked first among acute admitting trusts in the East of England and second nationally. It’s a remarkable achievement and, as the Trust’s charity, we’re honoured to support such a fantastic team.

Well Done Year 6!
Huge congratulations to all our Year 6 students for their incredible effort during SAT’s week, hugely challenging we know but everyone showed outstanding dedication. Special recognition to the two children unfortunately off poorly but since worked hard to catch up with the rest of the class, your perseverance and commitment was truly inspiring, you should all be proud of your efforts.
It is always special when our whole Hardwick community can join together for a unique whole school experience, in the past it has been to the Theatre but what a treat it was when we had the opportunity to visit the circus. We enjoyed a wonderful walk to Nowton Park where the magic of Circus Piddly came to life for us and we had an exciting sneak preview of the show. It was a fun and memorable day for

Handy tips for keeping cool
Do keep hydrated! Keep yourself and especially Lymphoedema/ Lipoedema area/limb out of direct sunlight. This does not mean that you are a vampire!
When in a car, difficult when driving I know, keep yourself covered from direct sunlight. Keeping a tea towel or towel in the car
can be handy for this. Use suntan lotion, ideally 50 SPF, and do wear a hat.
Put your garment in the fridge overnight (in a bag) so it’s cool to put on.
Keep a spray water bottle in the fridge, or cool box if out, to spray all over you to help reduce your body temperature. You can spray your garments too.
Use insect repellent to keep biting things from nibbling at you. You can buy Mosquito Repellent Bracelets in a variety of colours (to give that ‘going to a festival’ feel....).
Use a small battery fan, or a Spanish type material/paper fan to waft yourself with. Use portable fans at home, if you do not have air conditioning, to help keep cool.

The Big Listen Results, final report will be available at the residents meeting for discussion.
ONE Suffolk
The Government is planning to simplify how councils operate in Suffolk – a process known as Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). Currently, there are six councils: a county council and five district and borough councils. Each is responsible for different services and different areas, a structure that has been in place for more than 50 years. Suffolk County Council is proposing a bold and positive change: to bring all six councils together into a single new council, delivering all local and county-wide services. This would mean replacing the existing councils with one new organisation, complete with a fresh structure, fewer layers of bureaucracy and better ways of working.
We’re inviting residents, town and parish councils, businesses and community organisations to help shape the future.

Change can feel uncertain, but it’s also a moment of great opportunity. Over the next six months, they’ll be out in communities asking for your view, from how you want to access services to how decisions should be made and how many councillors you think we need. This is your county and your voice will help shape its future. Please find out more at www.onesuffolkcouncil.co.uk

SUMMER SQUASH, MINT, AND PECORINO PASTA

Squash, mint, and lemon juice lighten up this fresh summer pasta made in under 30 minutes for the perfect weeknight meal.
INGREDIENTS:
12 oz rigatoni
2 tbsp olive oil
1 shallot, halved and thinly sliced
1 1/2 lb. zucchini and summer squash (about 4 small), thinly sliced into halfmoons
Kosher salt and pepper
3 oz. pecorino cheese (about 1 cup), grated, plus more for serving
1/3 cup of mint, thinly sliced
1 tbsp. lemon juice
METHOD:
Cook pasta per package directions. Reserve ¾ cup cooking liquid, then drain.
Meanwhile, heat oil in large, deep skillet on medium. Cook shallot, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Add squash and ½ teaspoon each salt and pepper and cook, tossing occasionally, until squash is very tender but still holds its shape, 10 to 12 minutes.
Add pasta to skillet and toss with squash and cheese, adding reserved cooking liquid 2 tablespoons at a time, to form a sauce that coats pasta. Fold in mint and lemon juice. Top with additional cheese and black pepper if desired.

SESCA’s 12th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta

Members of the St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association enjoyed spectacular conditions for their 12th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta at Lackford Lake recently. The gusty and shifty breeze provided great entertainment for the competitors and spectators alike.
Initiated as a fun event to coincide with and celebrate Antigua Sailing Week in the Caribbean, the Regatta came to the attention of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority, via a Google news alert. They were so impressed with the initiative that they came onboard as sponsor. With the Tourism Authorities generous support, the Regatta has become the highlight of SESCA’s dinghy racing calendar.
The Race Officer, Martin Davies, set an interesting figure of eight course around the lake, providing challenging up wind legs and exhilarating downwind sailing in full view of the clubhouse. The sudden and unpredictable gusts caught out many of the sailors at

times resulting in several capsizes, which kept the safety crews busy.
Two races were sailed before a well-earned barbecue lunch. This was accompanied by the amazing Calypso sounds of the Dallaway steel pan band, provided by the Tourism Authority, which added an authentic Caribbean feel to the occasion.
With the Laser helms doing more than their fair share of swimming, Alan Wright, sailing his Solo, put on a great performance to lead the fleet home in each of the races. However, it was Debs Steele, racing her Topper, who mastered the conditions to win all the three races on handicap, with Alan having to settle for second place. Third overall was taken by new club member, Razvan Adam, who outshone several of the older hands in his Laser. Special mention should be made of young Adam Davies, who, despite several capsizes, persevered to complete all of the races in his Topper to take the junior prize.
The prizes, including several bottles of genuine English Harbour rum, were kindly provided and presented by Shakyrah Davis, Marketing Communications Executive of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority. Members of the Capsize Club were awarded towels!
Ms Davies concluded the presentations by saying how delighted the Tourism Authority were to have been involved with SESCA’s Antigua Sailing Day Regatta for the past 13 years. She then amazed everyone by saying that it was her great pleasure to invite Mike & Debs Steele, who came up with the idea, to attend next year’s Antigua Sailing Week, as guests of the Authority, in appreciation of the many years that they have been organising SESCA’s Regatta.
Mike Steele was stunned by the announcement and said how grateful he was on behalf of the club for the Tourism Authorities ongoing support for the event. He and his wife are delighted to accept the Authorities’ tremendous invitation.

POSTCARD CLUB BURY ST EDMUNDS
“The Suffolk Regiment –A Legacy in Postcards” was the presentation given by our guest speaker, Taff Gillingham from The Great War Huts at Hawstead, this month.
We saw examples of how postcards played a part in aiding recruitment in World War 1 as well as colourful patriotic and cartoon cards which were printed for various regiments using the

same picture. There were also some beautifully embroidered WW1 Suffolk Regiment postcards.

The evening was a mine of information about the Suffolk Regiment and its battalions which included some entertaining stories along the way.
After the breakup of the
Essex and Suffolk Cyclist Battalion, we heard how effective the 6th (Cyclist) Battalion were in halting charging cavalry, being faster than the foot infantry, and carrying out silent recces at night.

Craft Corner

Welcome to my crafty column! Every month I share a crafty activity for you to try at home. Check out my facebook page for more info www.facebook.com/thecraftyfoxes or visit www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk Michelle x

This months’ make is a great cheap and cheerful Summer activity – making beautiful soaring seagulls out of a simple white paper plate.
You will need… white paper plates, glue stick, split pins (optional), orange paper (cut from magazines or food packaging if you don’t have paper) and a grey and black felt tip pen or pencil.
Cut out the body of the bird from the middle of the plate and then use the 2 left over pieces either side to be the seagulls wings.
Attach with glue in a fixed position to resemble the bird flying or use a split pin so you can move the wings.
Add the orange beak and feet using glue and draw a black felt tip pen eye in place. Depending on where you place the beak and feet will determine if your bird is flying sideways or straight on.
TOP TIP…

Try making lots of sea gulls and adjust the wings on each one to give the illusion of flying. You could pin them up onto a garden shed or fence.

Is Jesus knocking at your door?

Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church

Ok, yes, I have been inspired by our all-age family worship sermon from Anna who questioned this idea that we may have a moment or several times when Jesus is calling us to Him. It has also come from the beautiful back light-stained glass image of Jesus holding a lamp and knocking at a door in the corner of our church. So, what does this mean for each of us? I am sure if we opened this conversation, each of us will have a different story of when, how often, or if at all Jesus has been in your life waiting for you to open the door?
Sarah, our Minister at Christ Church, is going to be celebrating 10 years of being ordained as minister in July. However, since getting to know Sarah, she has mentioned that Jesus had to knock on her door several times. In fact, it took years of gentle awareness that God had a plan for Sarah and every door she opened;
because she wasn’t rejected, she knew that this was the path for her to follow.
It began at Sarah’s regular church on transfiguration Sunday, and the vicar’s sermon focused on Moses having to wear a veil because he had been in Gods presence. Sarah felt a message come through that she had a vale to lift, and asked the vicar to discuss this with her. This led to another professional chat which opened a door to exploring her vocational calling. After using the task to draw a picture of what Sarah’s calling was, an image of a wall was drawn. The wall was not a door closing, but, as Sarah gave her role as a Head teacher up and placed her trust in God, she had a job opportunity with Children and Family’s work. This did fit with her skills and experience, but it didn’t fulfil Sarah. Sarah is asked to lead a service in this new benefice, and her
search for answers continued. Through speaking with more Vicars, she is asked to fill the forms in to go to a panel that would decide if she is ready to go to theological college. To get to this stage, Sarah needs a Bishop to sponsor her. In Sarahs mind she felt the wall was still too high, and the door was going to close. The bishop was very happy with Sarah’s journey, and the panel who usually give further advice for candidates to complete, but Sarah was given the green light for training. Sarah finally felt this was what God had been saying to her, and it was her own belief that kept her opening the doors. The wall was something that she had to take down brick by brick, overcoming each obstacle. If you are not sure if God is calling you, try talking to someone with faith, or visit Christ Church and listen to the words that stand out for you.
It’s been a long time since I have mentioned what’s happening at Larkwood lakes nature reserve in West Stow, but I just have to tell you what a bumper year it’s proving to be for wildlife. Last year was a disaster for so many reasons but how refreshing to see nature bounce back with a vengeance.
I could talk about many different groups of organisms but would like to concentrate on reptiles and amphibians. This year we are seeing several species around the lakes and in good numbers. I work hard to provide shelter, hibernation sites and wild areas for them to feed, breed and hide. One of the highlights of our nature walks around the lakes is a visit to 2 large sheets of corrugated iron laid on the ground. These are a focal point for grass snakes and slow worms which love the heat generated underneath and every time I have

I am also seeing grass snakes in the water and on one occasion watched 4 small individuals hunting tadpoles in West Stow lake just in-front of the clubhouse. They are such beautiful little creatures, totally harmless to humans and I never quite understand why anyone should fear them, but I guess coming from someone who once worked with large sharks that’s not surprising.

Our other slithering friends, the slow worms which for all the world look like snakes are actually legless lizards. Their name is not surprising, they are slow and when young look like a worm, a very beautiful worm, they are an iridescent bronze colour just like a small piece of jewellery. Slow worms are ovoviviparous, this means the female retains eggs in her body and bears live young. She will produce 8 to 12 babies which are capable of looking after themselves as soon as they are born.
If you are lucky enough to see a slow worm, please leave it alone, similar to grass snakes they are totally harmless to humans and now a protected species.
This year we had huge knots of tadpoles in the lakes, thousands of
individuals more than I have ever seen before. We have small frogs and common toads everywhere on the paths, I spend my whole time scanning the ground for tiny hopping amphibians as I walk round the lakes. I am so intent on avoiding them that I am probably missing kingfishers and otters posing and watching me as I pass by.

Any of the four species mentioned above may live in your garden especially if you have a pond. If you are lucky to see any, please leave them alone, watch them, photograph them, protect them from pets but most of all enjoy the experience.
If you are interested in a Nature walk around Larkwood lakes please contact me (see below), we take small groups of 4 to 10 and charge £10 per person – all proceeds going to maintaining the nature reserve.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE
Fellowship
I have been thinking about the word fellowship. The dictionary defines it as the friendly feeling between people who do the same thing or share an interest. As an Occupational Therapist working in mental health, I believe that the meaning, purpose and sense of belonging we find in what we do and who we do it with, impacts our health and wellbeing. Research supports this. Being part of a group gives us a sense of identity and empowers us to feel part of something bigger than ourselves. The group could be based on your values, beliefs, skills or hobbies.
Personally, I find that experience of fellowship and sense of belonging in my faith. As a Christian, I believe that the fellowship shared in meeting with other Christians encourages me and helps me manage the ups and downs of life. I believe the fellowship we have with God: through prayer, worship and studying the Bible, is consistent and empowering and goes beyond the fragility of our peer and family relationships.
I was privileged to experience
Zac’s (aged 6) interpretation of fellowship. In his words: “Church means community”.
another form of fellowship recently, as a visitor to a local Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Often described as “the fellowship”, this is a meeting for people recovering from drug addiction. As an outsider I was taken aback by how honest and frank people were in sharing their journey and the acceptance and support from others who were able to say: “I’ve been there too”. As I left, I was encouraged that there are spaces where people can be vulnerable about their struggles and feel supported in managing them. It also affirmed my experience of fellowship and mutual support at Church. In fact Narcotics Anonymous shares many Christian principles: admitting our weaknesses; seeking forgiveness and reconciliation; and believing and submitting to a power bigger than ourselves.
It left me considering the experiences of fellowship in these two settings which from the outside could be viewed as very different. For both, there are people of different ages, backgrounds and stages of their journey, meeting together to spur each other on.

I wondered about those who may not have these opportunities. I have had times in my life when I have not attended Church regularly and have felt all the poorer for it. As a teenager I remember thinking that my faith was private, just between me and God, so why would I want to spend my Sundays with other Christians?
What does it take for us to realise our need for connection? Does it have to take a drug addiction or a near death experience? Perhaps fellowship is something to be curious about. And see if our lives are made richer by it.

THE 19TH HOLE
BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH
Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching
Welcome back to the 19th hole, well that’s three majors completed for 2025 and this month brings us to The Open Championship.
The US Open didn’t disappoint and we have a new major champion in JJ Spaun and what a way to do it. Needed two putts from 64ft he only needed one and then the celebrations could begin.
After losing in a playoff earlier in the season at The Players Championship it was his turn to raise the trophy and enjoy that winning feeling!
The main talking point about the course itself was the rough… grown to 5 inches deep and was very hard to play from.
This month we will be previewing THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP, this year sees The Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
Hosting The Open in 2025 will offer the world another chance
to witness the Dunluce Links in all its glory, as the world’s best golfers take on the challenges posed by this magnificent course.
THE BIG QUESTION… Who will win this years Open Championship. This time I am not going to try and guess the winner as my track record isn’t that good. One thing’s for sure that if an Irish man is towards the top of the leaderboard the crowd will let us know!
COACHES CORNER – HOW TO GET OUT OF THE ROUGH!
Below are some helpful tips to escape tricky lies.
THINGS TO DO
Don’t get too brave from these lies, select enough loft to get the ball from these lies. After selecting a club opening face slightly will allow you to stop the club head closing at impact by the longer grass length.

Reposition your weight, shift across onto your lead foot. This will allow you to create a steeper angle of attack into the ball and with the lofted club you have selected will give you a great chance to escape this lie.
Swing steeper and hold on tight, being steeper and holding it a bit tighter to the club through impact will help you stop the club face closing through impact and get you back into play.
THINGS TO AVOID
Don’t try and help it up and out… you have changed your set up to help yourself come down steeper so don’t try and help it out, and lean back.
Just commit to these changes and swing down and through the shot, try not to let your weight fall onto your back foot.
Do not expect full control over this shot, remember it’s a shot you’re either trying to get back into position or are happy if it hits the green or surrounding areas.
If you expect too much from these lies then you will often
If you are having problems with this or any other part of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this game more. As this should be the most important aspect for anyone’s round of golf. Enjoy your golf in July and I will speak to you again next month.
find yourself playing the same shot again or worse, get back in play first before taking on shots to the green.
Hopefully putting these simple steps into your game when you need to escape some tricky lies will help.
