Welcome to the October issue

The leaves are tumbling, the jumpers are out, and there’s that unmistakable smell of autumn in the air. It’s one of those months where cosy evenings and pumpkin-spiced everything feels completely justified – and of course, we’ve got Halloween creeping up for a bit of spooky fun.

A little reminder too – the clocks go back on Sunday 26th October at 2am. That means an extra hour in bed (hooray!), or maybe just more time for a slow breakfast before braving the chill outside. Either way, it’s one of those small October gifts we’ll happily take.

This month, we’ve packed in plenty to keep you warm and wellfed. There’s a hearty Beef and Pumpkin Stew to bubble away on the hob, and for pudding lovers, a self-saucing butterscotch treat that’s gooey, golden and downright irresistible. And if you’re in the mood for something crafty, Michelle at Crafty Foxes has a brilliantly simple spooky-ghost activity – perfect for keeping the kids entertained.

So pop the kettle on, wrap up in something snuggly, and dive into this issue.

Have a fantastic October, take care, and we’ll see you again in November!

Southgate’s Multi-Community Food Bank and Winter Hardship Initiative

We are excited that for the third year the Southgate Community Partnership (SCP) in conjunction with Southgate Church and Hardwick Primary School are once again supporting families and individuals this Christmas and Winter.

There are lots of reasons why people experience financial hardship, struggle to afford the basics and a cash crisis can happen to anyone. This year we have the fantastic support of Morrison’s Daily, and its branch manager, Darren Ward.

It is our earnest wish to help those in our community better enjoy Christmas with hope, smiles and optimism. With multi-community spirit and endeavour our aim is to distribute food provisions to those in need, meat vouchers in

Bury Abbey Rotary Club Celebrates success at Suffolk Community Awards

Members of the Bury Abbey Rotary Club were thrilled to attend the Suffolk Community Award ceremony held at The Food Museum in Stowmarket on September 23rd.

The evening was a momentous occasion as the club was honoured with the prestigious Event Organiser of the Year award for their outstanding Classic Car Show.

The award, presented by Larking Gower, included a trophy, a certificate, and a £50 prize, recognizing

the club’s dedication and hard work in organising this beloved community event. Throughout the evening, a total of seventeen awards were presented, celebrating the achievements of young people, community members, and volunteers who have made significant contributions to the region.

Mark Murphy MBE served as the compere for the event, engaging the audience with interviews, including a spotlight on Phil Peters, the co-ordinator of the Classic Car Show. This annual event,

held in the picturesque grounds of Culford School near Bury St Edmunds, has become a staple in the community, attracting car enthusiasts and families alike.

Now in its 11th year, the Classic Car Show has successfully raised over £200,000 for local charities, making a meaningful impact on the lives of many in the area. This year’s recognition marks a significant milestone for the Rotary Club of Bury St Edmunds Abbey, as it is the first time they have received a Suffolk Community Award.

A Group for all Seasons

Bury Water Meadows Group works to preserve and enhance the water meadows, and the chalk streams flowing through them.

Bury St Edmunds has the privilege, and responsibility, of hosting two examples of this precious, globally rare habitat that is capable of supporting an array of iconic species such as brown trout, kingfisher and water vole.

The scope of the work undertaken by BWMG has expanded dramatically since its establishment over ten years ago. The group’s primary area of operations ranges from Ram Meadow to the north of the town, and then follows the course of the River Lark upstream, through the Abbey Gardens and the site of the monastic fishponds in the Crankles, south to No Mans Meadows. We have around 200 members, with a dedicated core of volunteers who turn out in all weathers to do their bit for the local environment. There is always a great deal to be done and we are always busy. Some issues, such as water quality and the vagaries of our increasingly erratic and unpredictable climate, are outside our control but there

is still much that we can do to try and ensure that future generations can enjoy what we perhaps sometimes take for granted.

Our work is seasonal and throughout the year we run three work parties a fortnight. During autumn and winter, when the birds are not nesting, we wade in ditches, clearing undergrowth and low-growing tree cover to create a light and shade mosaic of habitats to encourage biodiversity; where the unsung but vital fungi, creepy crawlies and spiders, the shy and elusive water vole, the more glamorous kingfishers and majestic barn

owls can thrive. This is when we continue our ongoing habitat management work at the large pond in Ram Meadow, (formerly known as the scrape).

As the days lengthen and the weather becomes warmer we discard our waders and take up scythes to cut nettles along the Lark Path and in the Crankles in pursuit of our aim to create wildflower meadows. The wildflower meadow project is now showing good signs of progress as the nettles have succumbed to the scythe. Raking the cut vegetation (the arisings) is a vital part of the process, to reduce the nutrient content of

www.burywatermeadowsgroup.org.uk

the soil and allow the wildflowers a chance to grow. In the spring and early summer the meadow is rich in wildflowers such as ox eye daisy, tufted vetch, cow slip and lady’s bedstraw and is alive with bees and butterflies. Yellow rattle is known as the meadow maker, another vital component to give the wildflowers a chance to thrive.

Whatever the time of year, we finish our work parties with a sense of achievement in a job well done! We are always on the lookout for new volunteers to help us in our work, so if perhaps the turning of the season from summer into autumn is prompting you to start a new activity do get in touch!

POSTCARD CLUB BURY ST EDMUNDS

This month our speaker was Simon Last, a genealogist from Southend. He finds old postcards/photos at postcard fairs and antique shops, researches them, and posts his findings on https://charnwoodgenealogy. wordpress.com.

One example was a wedding photo taken by Opie Limited, Redruth, Cornwall of Alexander R Abram and Dorothy Korb in 1928. The

only message on the reverse said “With Mr & Mrs A R Abrams compliments”. Simon discovered Alexander was a Merchant Seaman in WW1 and his campaign medals can be seen in the photo.

The 1939 Register showed Alexander and Dorothy living at Devon House, Anglesey, Wales, where Alexander’s occupation is shown as working for Trinity

as a Lighthouse Keeper, presumably at the South Stack Lighthouse.

The photograph was successfully reunited with the couple’s great nephew in America.

For more information about the club/events please contact Sue Rawles on 01284 769480 or email burystedmundspostcardclub@gmail.com Or find us on facebook: Bury St Edmunds Postcard Club

Moreton Hall WI

Unfortunately, our September speaker had to cancel at the last minute due to health issues, but we were very fortunate to find a replacement.

Mr Ian Robertson from Pakenham Water Mill stepped in and gave us a fascinating talk about the watermill as well as bringing some of the flour ground at the Mill to sell.

Pakenham Water Mill is the oldest surviving flour mill in Suffolk and still produces stone ground wholemeal flour, spelt flour and rye flour for local sales. It is over 1000 years old and is owned today by Historic Suffolk and run by a team of volunteers, of which Ian is one. His talk was illustrated by slides and videos, the latter being particularly helpful in showing us how

the mill operates using streams channelled across Pakenham Fen to feed the millpond which provides the waterpower to turn the mill’s iron waterwheel and drive the millstones. We are looking forward to arranging a visit to the mill so that we can see it in action and sample the legendary scones, which Ian felt would rival any produced by the WI!

Mama B’s 3rd birthday

This month marks three years of Mama B’s, a special pamper day for cancer patients at the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, My WiSH Charity is privileged to help fund this monthly event, held at the Stephen John Salon in Moreton Hall.

On the first Monday of every month, the salon closes its doors to the public and opens them exclusively to patients undergoing cancer treatment. Here, a dedicated team of volunteers, alongside the salon’s professionals, offer a range of treatments including manicures, oncology massage, reflexology and wig washing. More than that, they provide time, care and a listening ear.

Mama B’s is led by salon owner, Steve Trowles, in memory of his mum Brenda, who sadly died in 2016, only 12 weeks after a cancer diagnosis. Through his work, Steve met many women

experiencing hair loss due to treatment. He realised that, while each person had their own experience, they could benefit from coming together in a supportive environment. That idea became the heart of Mama B’s.

Since then, the monthly sessions have become a lifeline for so many. Patients tell us it is a safe space, where they can meet others who truly understand what it feels like to receive a cancer diagnosis. For some, it is about regaining confidence, enjoying a manicure or having their wig styled. For others, it’s simply chatting, laughing, and sharing stories with people who “get it”.

One of the volunteers, Jeanette, who has been through breast cancer herself, explained that while the hospital team focus on the medical side, Mama B’s looks after the cosmetic side. Being able to look in the mirror and feel more like yourself again can have a huge impact on wellbeing.

It is no surprise that Steve’s dedication has been recognised beyond Suffolk. Last year, he received a

surprise visit from BBC’s The One Show and Jeff Brazier as part of their One Big Thank You. The programme celebrates those who go the extra mile for their community, and Steve’s commitment to supporting people through Mama B’s made him a very worthy recipient.

As a charity, we are so proud to support Mama B’s. It’s a wonderful example of what can happen when people come together - local businesses, volunteers, and generous donors - to make a real difference and help enhance care for patients at West Suffolk Hospital.

David Wright

Here’s to three years of Mama B’s, and to many more. For me personally, it’s an honour to spend time with these incredible ladies each month, hearing their stories and seeing first-hand the difference a little pampering can make. Mama B’s takes place on the first Monday of each month, from 10am until 3pm, at the Stephen John Salon, Moreton Hall, Bury St Edmunds.

A HAPPY MEMORY

We all have to deal with pain and what it does to our lives, sometimes on a daily basis. Some days are much harder than others. How we deal with it, can be very difficult and it is very necessary to be as prepared as possible to fight pain both physically and mentally. Over the years, you may have put together, ways for to cope however one idea may seem strange, but could work for some. A special and happy memory which brings a smile to your face.

Happy memories to concentrate and focus on at times of anxious moments, onset of a panic attack or just your everyday discomfort. By bringing those thoughts to mind may help.

All you need is to pick that memory, something above everything else. It does not have to be life changing. It could be as simple as a particular time you went some where. One particular memory works best. Try it and see if it helps you too.

Dissolve the beef stock granules into the beef mixture. Stir in the tomatoes.

Preheat oven to 170°C.

Cut top off the pumpkin and remove seeds and pulp. Place the pumpkin in a heavy baking tin. Fill the pumpkin with the beef mixture. Brush outside of the pumpkin with remaining oil.

Bake in the preheated oven 2 hours or until tender. Serve the stew from the pumpkin, scraping out some of the pumpkin flesh with each serving.

Cricket Club BURY ST EDMUNDS

The cricket season ended on Saturday September 13th and witnessed a climax to the Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League never before or likely ever again. The league went into the final round of matches when 5 of the 6 had a bearing on which club would end up in the play offs.

Bury St Edmunds won their final game at home against Witham thanks in the main to the bowling of captain Josh Cantrell who produced one

of the best performances of his career taking the 6 wickets to see Witham all out for 98. Without realising it, Cantrell had taken a hattrick of wickets with the last delivery of the 28th over and first two of the 30th. In fact his last two wickets in consecutive deliveries ended the game so he starts next season on another hat-trick!

Bury team showed a level of commitment and great determination to retain their EAPL status, but it would not be plain sailing. After lunch Bury opened their innings and soon lost 3 wickets with just 15 scored. The wicket was certainly not easy after an hour long delay for rain (and lightening) Bury resumed to win the game with Will Routledge and Cantrell gradually taking control.

Bury were 44.3 after 20 overs both survived some appeals and the odd bit of luck probably overdue, both

players showed grit and courage. Routledge had travelled all the way back from Exeter University to play and was not going give his wicket away, Cantrell played with a degree of panache and the target became close Bury scored the 99 runs as Routledge remained 35 not out from 105 deliveries in 105 minutes of batting (Geoffrey Boycott would have been proud) and Cantrell 46 not from 64 balls in 69 minutes. Bury had secured 25 points to win the match and retain their EAPL status.

The win was doubly important as it enabled the 2nd team to win promotion to the Two Counties League Division 1 the league below the EAPL.

It has been an outstanding season for the 2nd team with many of the players involved the next day as the club went on to retain the Suffolk Cup.

10.30am-noon. Come and think about life’s big questions over breakfast (sorry everyone has to pay for their own breakfast). All welcome and you don’t have to be a Christian to join in the conversation!

Do you question ‘why people have faith’ or ‘The meaning of Life’?

I recently heard this poem read out by the granddaughter of a lady that came to faith later in her life.

The lady decided to relay her faith journey through poetry, and the words really helped under pin why we have faith and what life is about.

I hope this gives you time to reflect.

(From Are You Talking To Me God? by

“O why do things go wrong?”

(So often people say)

“And why, if there’s a God, does He let me feel this way? Would He leave me, if He loved me, in my sadness and despair? How can He let it happen? Does He love me, does He care?”

When we look upon this life only our side can we seeWe should really try to see it as God’s wondrous tapestry. We are looking at the back, the front is hidden from our viewBut each knot and hanging thread shows how much He cares for you.

A knot will hold a thread, so that thread can’t fall away. And in our lives those knots save us, too, from going astray. Trust in the father’s pattern, Wait until the day you see The front and all the splendour, In God’s wondrous tapestry.

In this life we can’t imagine, but one day we will be shown, Then the joy of understanding As His wonders He makes known. For there, in all its glory from the right side we will see all the beauty, and the answers in God’s wondrous tapestry.

In this life we can’t imagine, but one day we all will see the beauty and the answers in God’s wondrous tapestry.

Social media has many pluses but also many minuses, recently I have been watching too many Instagram reels but something good has come from it. My compulsion to like positive stories means the algorithm feeding me is now providing some interesting reels. This month I want to share a couple of these with you.

The first idea is provided by Tata World Solar. They are actively involved in a process that utilizes osmosis technology to produce energy from water, this innovative approach, uses the difference in salinity (saltiness) between river water

Secondly, I would like to introduce you to another amazing innovation being developed between Researchers from Zhengzhou University in China and the University of South Australia. They have developed a “biodegradable cooling film” that reflects nearly all sunlight and emits internal heat into space.

This biodegradable cooling film can reduce building temperatures without electricity and is an innovative eco-friendly material which could be used to combat rising temperatures and energy use.

The newly developed cooling film can lower temperatures by an average of 4.9 degrees Celsius during the day and 5.1 degrees at night without using any electricity. The researchers explained that by attaching it to building exteriors or roofs, it can effectively help address global warming and urban heat island

and seawater to generate electricity. This provides a steady and carbon-free, clean renewable energy source 24 hours a day.

My immediate response was one of cynicism and as I read the reel, I could hear Donald Trump shouting ‘Fake news’ in my ear. But it’s true, you can make electricity from the interface of salt water and freshwater. This is achieved using pipes which channel freshwater and seawater through selective membranes, this generates an ionic current which is the core mechanism behind converting osmotic energy into electricity.

That means wherever rivers meet the sea we could develop generating plants to provide electricity.

phenomena. Simulation results showed that the film could reduce cooling energy by up to 20.3% annually in hot cities like Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

The key component of the cooling film is polylactic acid (PLA), a plant-based plastic made from natural materials like corn starch that decomposes over time. The researchers applied a special structure that reflects 98.7% of light, designed to effectively block heat even under strong sunlight.

The researchers stated that this film was designed to be easily applicable in various places, including building exteriors or roofs, electronic devices, and agricultural greenhouses, so that it does not remain merely a laboratory result. They are currently reviewing the possibility of mass production, and it is expected to expand

Nicolas Heuzé, co-founder of Sweetch Energy, a company working to bring this technology to scale is convinced that this could be a game changer, and according to estimates from the Dubai Future Foundation, osmotic systems could eventually generate nearly a fifth of global electricity needs – around 5,177 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually.

Testing has already begun in France, a demonstration facility known as OPUS-1 began working at the end of 2024 on the Rhône estuary. The pilot site is designed to show how osmotic systems can operate under real-world conditions.

If replicated more widely on the Rhône estuary, such facilities could deliver up to 500 megawatts of carbon-free electricity, which could power more than 1.5 million

to fields such as medical cooling patches in the future.

Let’s hope that both ideas come into mainstream production, the two together could have a huge effect on reducing greenhouse gases and slowing the advance of manmade climate breakdown.

What do you think? Do you have any ideas? If so please drop me a line .

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

The God Who Transforms Us

A Scottish fisherman had returned from a day’s fly-fishing and was having tea in a smart café. Whilst he was describing his catch, he spread out his arms and knocked over his tea which made an ugly brown stain up the whitewashed wall. The fisherman was mortified.

“Never mind!” said a man on a nearby table.

He jumped up, took a crayon from his pocket and began sketching around the tea stain on the wall. Soon he’d transformed the stain into a stag, with majestic antlers. The artist was a man called Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, one of Britain’s foremost 19th century wildlife painters.

I find this story powerful, because to me, it illustrates what God does with us when we become Christians. How he takes us as we are and begins to transform us. People sometimes think that the church is full of disapproving goodygoodies. But this has not

been my experience. Indeed, most of the Christians I know, will tell you that they have a past that they’re not proud of.

But once a person has put their faith in Jesus and been forgiven, they really do begin to change. Because from the day you become a Christian, God’s Spirit comes to live within you and you come alive, spiritually. Which perhaps explains why many new believers say that they feel very different: Light-hearted, joyful, and more hopeful. And that over time, they have become more patient, forgiving and generous. Even the men.

Jesus says that this process

transforms you so profoundly, that it is like being born-again. So that to God, you look like a new person!

Over the years, I’ve seen many new Christians begin to change. I’ve met an ex-prisoner, who is now a prison chaplain. I’ve talked to a former heroin addict who is now married. And I know a professional gambler who has given up betting.

Southgate Church is full of people who have been transformed and who will happily tell you their stories. As a result, visitors are often surprised by how much they enjoy the experience; and their children often ask to return. So, why not give us a try one Sunday morning? Our services begin at 10.30am and last for just over an hour.

After which, of course, we’ll offer you a cup of tea – or coffee.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back and also welcome to the real autumn edition of the 19th hole, I don’t like saying the word WINTER as I know it signals the end of the golf season and for lots of us, the end of regular trips out onto the course.

However, with WINTER comes a great opportunity to highlight, change and practice your golf game in preparation for the start of next years season.

COACHES CORNER – STRIKE!

This is most important aspect of any golf shot you hit, and without better strikes you will find it very hard to achieve your desired ball flight.

So to hit functional golf shots we need to be hitting the middle of the club more often than not, but also if we aren’t we need to know where we are hitting and why.

With this in mind this months Coaches Corner is highlighting the importance of strike and how within your practice you can track your strike to give to feedback on what happening when you swing the club.

This information will to draw conclusions on what may need to improve within your swing or explain why you may not be getting the results that you are expecting on course.

WE ALWAYS NEED FEEDBACK!

Here are two great ways to receive feedback on your striking

I know we have only just finished the season but there is no time like the present to highlight a few areas of your game to work on during the off season.

Have you made a plan for the off season? If so, well done and I hope that you achieve the results you are after. If you haven’t it’s the perfect time. If you would like any help during these winter months it would be great to help any of you with your games.

throughout your practice, neither of these will break the bank either.

Use a dry white board marker to make a large dot on the golf ball, then position the dot so you will strike it. This will then mark the club when it is struck and you will receive the feedback on your strike location.

Another way to see where you are striking the ball on the face is with dry shampoo…

YES you heard me correctly! Spray the face of the club and then strike a shot, this will mark

Have a great month, enjoy the first major of the year and getting out on course and playing this great game. I will speak to you all next month.

the club face again giving you more feedback on your strike location.

Now that you will be armed with better information about your strike patterns you can make either an informed decision on your technique, or take this information to your PGA professional and together look at ways to achieve better results going forwards.
