Welcome to the May issue

Spring is in full swing, and as we head towards summer, the local calendar is starting to fill up again – and we’re here to help you make the most of it. May brings not one but two bank holiday weekends, perfect for getting outdoors, and enjoying some well-earned downtime.

A date for your diary this month is the Southgate Family Fun Day on Monday 5th May at Hardwick Primary School. It’s always a brilliant day out for all ages, packed with games, food, and feel-good fun. And if you’re in the mood for something sweet this month, don’t miss our recipe for a Baked Sticky Rhubarb Pudding on page 42. Comforting, tangy, and the perfect way to celebrate rhubarb season.

We had a fantastic response to the competition in our April issue to win a family ticket to The South Suffolk Show. Thank you to everyone who entered! A big congratulations to our lucky winner, Denise Dinsey. If you didn’t win this time, don’t worry, tickets are still available for the show on Sunday 11th May. It’s a great day out, with something for everyone to enjoy.

We hope you enjoy this issue, packed with news, events, and great features from our amazing local businesses. Enjoy the month ahead, take care, and we’ll be back with more in June!

Repair Café – Why Volunteer?

A cynic once said that “The world is run by enlightened self-interest” or, put more simply, “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours”. Chimpanzees, Bonobos and Gorillas, our primate cousins, engage in this activity very literally, maintaining societal bonds by mutual grooming.

We humans like to think that we’re more civilised but scratch the surface and you’ll see this reciprocity in a lot of human behaviours. This is not supposed to be an essay on Anthropology but I think there’s an interesting angle on why the Repair Café is such a powerful and popular concept.

The rewards that clients (the “scratchees”) of the Repair café get are pretty obvious: you bring in your broken and

possibly precious object, a skilled and friendly expert fixes it while they talk you through the process and show you how you might undertake a similar repair yourself. All the while, other lovely people are making tea and cake to refresh you.

The benefits to the expert repairers (the “scratchers”) are less obvious but, I think, more powerful and deeply-rooted in the way our human society operates. Speaking personally, as a retired engineer and an extrovert, I craved the intellectual stimulation and social interactions that work provides. I don’t like golf, so I wanted to find another opportunity for social engagement preferably with something to keep my brain occupied. I also felt something more fundamental – a desire to

give something back: an altruistic urge.

The term Altruism was coined in the early 19th century as the opposite of egoism: “The concern for the well-being of others, independently of personal benefit or reciprocity.”. The benefits of altruism are well-documented. Despite the definition saying the giver is independent of personal benefit or reciprocity, studies show the mental health of the giver can improve more than the receiver.

That deals with the social sidewhat about the intellectual? Repairing something (be that an item of clothing or something electronic) is a bit like a “Whodunit”. The detective (the repairer) has to work out the means, motive and opportunity of why something broke, piece together the story and then provide the satisfying denouement where they hand back the repaired article in front of an amazed audience, embodying the café’s motto of “Bin it? No way!”

The Repair Café is a global organisation started 15 years ago in Holland. We’re run by volunteers for donations. The money goes to venue hire, insurance and consumables. It’s not why we do it.

The next Repair Café in Bury St Edmunds is on 10th May from 11-2 in the Unitarian Meeting House on Churchgate Street. Book in using our online form: https://tally.so/r/3lyvqo

We offer free mental health support in Suffolk to people aged 16 or over. You can self-refer for talking therapy (without seeing your GP) and access a large range of online workshops by visiting us online or giving us a call.

Our April meeting was well attended, and we welcomed several visitors to hear our speaker, Michelle Russell from Churchouse Stained Glass. What a marvelous evening.

Michelle told us how she decided to enroll for a four-day training course on stained glass which changed her life and since 2013 she has had her own studio in Elmswell.

Michelle brought examples of her work together with some of the equipment she uses, and talked us through the different techniques employed, including leadwork, foils and kiln formed jewelry.

Have you ever wanted to challenge yourself while supporting a cause close to home? Now’s your chance.

My WiSH Charity is proud to support the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (WSFT), which includes West Suffolk Hospital, Newmarket Community Hospital, and vital NHS community services they provide across Suffolk. Our mission is simple: to enhance patient care and support our NHS staff. From funding state-of-the-art equipment to improving patient environments and supporting staff wellbeing, every pound raised helps us go above and beyond for our community.

This year, we’re thrilled to offer our supporters the chance to take part in a series of incredible challenge events. These are well-known, bucket-list style experiences – and now, for the first time, you can take them on while fundraising for your local NHS charity.

Take your pick from three exciting opportunities.

YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE

Tackle the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough in just one day. That’s 24 miles and over 1,400m of ascent – all in under 12 hours! This challenge offers stunning views and a huge sense of achievement. Join us and claim your place in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Club, all while raising money for patient care right here in West Suffolk.

NATIONAL THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE

If you’re up for a bigger test, why not conquer the UK’s three highest peaks in one incredible weekend? Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike (climbed at night!), and Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon await. It’s a demanding 22-mile trek with over 3,000m of climbing, but the rewards are enormous.

LONDON TO PARIS CYCLE RIDE

Prefer two wheels to two feet? This five-day, 311-mile cycling challenge takes you from the heart of London to the streets of Paris. It’s an unforgettable ride through beautiful countryside and bustling cities, all in support of My WiSH Charity and the people WSFT care for every day.

These events are more than just physical challenges – they’re a way to give back. Perhaps you, or someone you love, has been cared for at West Suffolk or Newmarket Hospital. Maybe you just want to support your local NHS in a memorable way. Whatever your reason, we’d love to have you on board.

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School

Wow… Easter has come and gone and unbelievably we are two thirds of the way through the school year. We hope all enjoyed their holiday and had a lovely chocolatey time!

So much happened last month and one of the highlights was the visit of acclaimed “Ready, Eddie, Go” author Nikki Saunders organised by Governor Waveney Metcalf as part of World Autism Awareness Week. The children heard a fun story, learnt about autism and discovered why being different makes us all special. Nikki was “shocked” at how well behaved all the children were, “The little ones were amazing, it was truly lovely to hear so many questions from them, I love that they relaxed and shared their ideas with me”.

Eagle Class celebrated British Science Week with the exciting challenge to build their very own Energy Town. This led to brilliant discussions about green energy alternatives, pupils quickly realised that making a thriving city wasn’t easy!. We also celebrated Red Nose Day and the FoHPS Easter Bingo was a huge success, and very exciting was the launch of the OPAL Lunchtimes programme.

The Outdoor Play and Learning initiative focuses on enhancing outdoor play and learning For children, promoting creativity, teamwork and active play and we look forward to giving our pupils the chance to really enjoy and learn from play.

Finally this months montage features brave Kylie Turner who had her hair bunches cut off in front of the whole school assembly to raise funds and provide her precious hair for the Little Princess Trust. Kylie had the idea when she was brushing her hair in the mirror and asked Mum if she could

have it cut to donate it to children with cancer, Mum Lucy cut the first locks then Ms Suttle cut Kylie’s hair. Fifteen inches of hair was cut and over £800 was raised and we are incredibly proud of Kylie.

Another very special occasion was when players from the Hardwick Football Club were mascots at a recent Bury Town football match against Walthamstow at Ram Meadow. They witnessed a 3 - 1 home win, led the players onto the pitch and chose the Man-ofThe Match, a truly special experience.

Need more from your existing solar installation?

If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system

The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours.

A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it.

If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage.

Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

Why choose Generate + Store?

• Local business for 20+ years

• NICEIC and MCS accredited

With the warmer spring weather, getting outside seems more inviting to do and gardening is one activity that many of us will have been busy doing.

It is important for those with Lymphoedema and Lipoedema to remember to

wear gardening gloves and appropriate footwear to help protect your skin from getting scratched, stung or damaged.

If your skin suffers damage, then treat it straight away with an antiseptic solution/ wipe, a medicinal cream that

LSS’s 2nd June meeting theme will be Taking your Lymphoedema and/or Lipoedema on Holiday.

There’ll be hints, tips and advice on all manner of things that those with these conditions need to consider and know before setting off for a break, whether in this country or abroad.

Baked Sticky Rhubarb pudding

This baked rhubarb pudding has a lovely bottom layer of sticky rhubarb, topped with an ever so moist sponge. The topping is what makes this baked pudding a little different, but it’s essential to achieve the lovely stickiness!

Top with half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon for a nice aromatic touch, and serve with custard or cream.

Ingredients:

370g diced fresh or frozen rhubarb

125g plain flour

150g caster sugar

80ml milk

45g butter, melted

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Topping

200g sugar

1 tablespoon cornflour (if needed)

225ml boiling water

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Place rhubarb in a buttered 20cm square tin. In a small bowl, mix flour, sugar, milk, butter, baking powder, salt and vanilla (mixture will be thick). Spread over rhubarb. For topping, combine sugar and cornflour. Sprinkle over sponge mixture.

Pour water over all but do not stir. Bake for 55-65 minutes or until pudding tests done.

This months’ make uses old egg boxes and turns them into a cute flower shop.

You will need… 2 egg boxes, pair of scissors, hot glue gun, old cardboard, ruler, paint.

Firstly cut out a rectangle 50cm x 24cm from cardboard.

Draw a scalloped edge on another rectangle and cut out. This will be the canopy.

Draw a round circle (draw around a tin can).

Paint the wheel to look like a tyre and spokes and paint the canopy.

Leave to dry and then stick in place using a hot glue gun.

Then cut out 4 dividers and 3 egg cups from egg boxes and paint white.

Stick them onto the flower shop.

Pick some wildflowers and add them into the vases to complete the look.

TOP TIP…

Try placing some wet tissue in the bottom of the egg box vases to stop the flowers from drying out so quick.

Are you a giver or a receiver?

You may think about presents when we talk about giving or receiving, but actually I wish to focus your thoughts on other ways you can give or receive.

Maybe a friend has been there to pick you up when life gets hard, or a family member has cooked you a lovely meal. You might have been someone who has given their time to cut someone’s grass, or volunteer on a regular basis; but which of these do you get most pleasure from?

It is hard to decide if you have just been the recipient of someone else’s good will, or you are smiling because of recent experiences helping others.

In May we are looking at

Acts 9-16 and the journey with Jesus. 11th May we read about Tabitha, who had a reputation of ‘doing good & helping those in need’. I tried to discover her reasons why she helped others so much, and as a committed disciple she learnt from, and followed Jesus’s teachings. Tabitha also had the resources to help make clothing for widows, and provide food for the community she lived in.

We may think we don’t have resources to help anyone else. Actually, Jesus used his teaching to show that we are all born with skills, but sometimes it takes other people to bring these out.

Since I have been teaching exercise classes in the

community, I have often used Easter time to make chocolate crispy nests with eggs in to share with my classes. This was influenced by my mum who would make sweets for her student nurses, and patients. My husband often gets disappointed as the cakes are not for him.

I think Jesus wants us all to find the gifts we are born with to help others, maybe we can help ourselves enjoy what we are capable of.

If you haven’t discovered your own unique abilities, why not try helping others; Not only could it be a wonderful gift to others, you might receive the best gift of all…

Your reason for being here!

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE

Funny isn’t it, water is one of the most important substances on our planet but sometimes we take it for granted. Thankfully over the last few years an increasing group of organisations and individuals have become more vocal to hold our suppliers to account.

Interestingly the average water usage per person per day depends on the number of people living in a household, these are the numbers supplied by Anglian Water:

• 1 person 54 Cubic metres a year per person

• 2 people 50 Cubic metres a year per person

• 3 people 46.3 Cubic metres a year per person

Putting that into perspective the water used by 46 of us living on our own would fill an Olympic sized swimming pool in a year. Pretty shocking.

Also compare that to the 1830’s when we used just 18 litres of water per person per day, that’s only 6.6 Cubic metres a year, less that a seventh of our consumption today.

It is now just a commodity in the eyes of the privatised water companies who have made huge sums of money also paying share holders over £80 billion in 30 years.

In that time we have seen a degradation of our water treatment infrastructure which has led to increasing pollution in our rivers, streams and lakes.

If more of those profits had gone into upgrading our system, maybe we would see cleaner purer water in more of our waterways. Anyway, that’s enough of a rant, how about we look at the water coming out of your tap.

Financially, each cubic metre of water costs us between £7.90 (1 person in a household) to £6 (3 people in a household), and adds 10.4kg to our carbon footprint.

Note - The increase in cost with fewer people in a household is due to the relative effect of the daily standing charge which is charged by household not householders.

Depending on the number of people in a household that gives a range as follows:

1 person £427 and 561kg

CO₂ per year

2 people £327 and 525kg

CO₂ per person per year

3 people £278 and 481kg

CO₂ per person per year

My advice here is look at the big water usage in your household, these are going to be things like showers, toilets and high pressure outside washers. You could save anything between 30% and 40% of the water you use by significantly cutting back on these activities. e.g. reduce an 8 minute power shower from 8 minutes to 4 minutes save 11 cubic metres of water in a year, that’s £66 and 114kg CO₂ per person.

Using a dual flush toilet, you could save around 4.5 cubic metres of water in a year, saving £27 and 47kg CO₂ per person.

I think we will carry on with this subject next month, there are many more ways we can save water that I want to share with you.

Please let me know if you have any other thoughts on water.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

The Pope without Pomp

Cardinal Vincent Nichols is the current leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Great Britain, and tells the story of a meeting with the Pope. After they’d been together for a while the Pope asked him if he had any questions. Cardinal Nichols said that he had just one: “What should I look for when identifying potential bishops to recommend to you?” The Pope thought for a while and said: “If a man is good at teaching, let him teach you; if he is good at administration, let him run your office; but when sending me potential bishops, send me men who smell of the sheep”.

In other words, an authentic Christian leader will not float around in high level meetings behind closed doors, talking only to other senior clerics. Rather they will retain a heart for ordinary people and spend their time ministering amongst them, in the real world.

Last month, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, also known as Pope Francis, died at the age of 88. He was loved and respected, both in and outside the Catholic Church. Upon becoming Pope, he said

“I am a sinner, but I trust in the infinite mercy and patience of our Lord Jesus Christ”. And so, from the outset of his papacy, he was reluctant to condemn immoral behaviour in others, preferring instead to stress God’s mercy.

He also became known for his rejection of pomp and luxury; and was often spotted driving around Rome in a 20-year-old Renault 4, with 190,000 miles on the clock. He lived simply, eschewing the gilded papal apartments, in favour of an ordinary flat where he cooked for himself.

When he was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Bergoglio had a reputation for spending most of his time visiting the

poorest neighbourhoods, where he urged his priests “to get out of their churches and onto the streets” so that they could meet the poor “person to person”.

Until the end, Pope Francis remained humble, sincere and warm. He never became a professional Christian, hiding behind his esteemed title, in the safety of an institution. Indeed, people who wrote to the pontiff asking for his help were often surprised when he telephoned them himself.

If Jesus showed us what God looks like, then surely Pope Francis, showed us what a Christian should look like.
