Welcome to the August issue
The summer holidays are in full swing, now’s the time to soak up the sunshine and make the most of all the fun happening across our community. Whether you’re staying local or planning some days out, there’s no shortage of ways to keep everyone entertained this month.
Inside this issue, you’ll find a fantastic line-up of family-friendly activities – from an amazing Tennis Camp and Suffolk Libraries’ Reading Quest, to the brilliant Prehistoric Beasts: Land, Sea, Sky exhibition at Moyse’s Hall Museum. The Dream Care Farm Summer Holiday Club in Thurston offers a wonderful outdoor experience for children, and for a bit of theatre magic, don’t miss The Sword in the Stone at the Theatre Royal. The Food & Drink Festival is back on 24th & 25th August, more details on page 17. And when the kids are finally worn out, we’ve got something special for the grown-ups too. Why not try our refreshing Apple Prosecco Punch recipe on page 42? It’s light, fruity, and the perfect way to toast to summer in style.
However you’re spending August, we hope this issue brings you lots of ideas and inspiration. It’s full with local news, events, and features from some of the brilliant businesses that make our community so special. Have a fantastic August, take care, and we’ll see you again in September!

We welcomed several visitors to our July meeting to hear our speaker, Jason Middleton tell us about the ‘Gemstones and Jewellery of the Rich and Famous’.
Jason’s ‘day job’ is in the jewellery industry working as an international gemstone buyer supplying the jewellery market and his own company with loose gemstones specialising in pearls and semi-precious stones.
Jason explained the different ways of cutting precious stones to enhance the sparkle and explained that these techniques were relatively modern which is why, in Tudor times, pearls were the precious stone of choice.
His talk was well illustrated with slides showing some of the most luxurious jewels ever, such as those owned by celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly.

He also talked about some of the glittering collection of jewellery and particularly tiaras, owned by the royal family which certainly made everyone feel that a visit to see the Crown Jewels would be good.
Jason brought with him a selection of his own pearl and silver jewellery for members to purchase if they wished and members certainly enjoyed both his talk and browsing through the items for sale.

Challenge yourself & support your local NHS

If you have ever thought about doing something a little different –something that pushes your limits while giving back to your community – now is the perfect time.
At My WiSH Charity, we are here to help turn your motivation into something truly meaningful by supporting the work of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (WSFT).
We cover West Suffolk Hospital, Newmarket Community Hospital and the vital NHS community services that care for people across Suffolk. Whether it is funding enhanced equipment, transforming patient spaces or supporting staff wellbeing, everything we do is about making a difference where it matters most.
We are lucky to have some amazing fundraisers in our community and, this summer, one of them is WSFT’s chief executive, Dr Ewen Cameron. He is taking on an impressive personal challenge, running seven half marathons in seven days to raise funds for patient care.

Dr Ewen Cameron, Chief Executive of West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust
When we asked him about why he wanted to support the charity, Ewen said he was:
“lucky enough to see how the work of My WiSH enhances the care we provide every single day at the Trust”.
And he’s right. From providing black-out blinds in our birthing rooms to a bespoke Cardiac Diagnostic Centre at West Suffolk Hospital, the breadth of benefits to both patients and staff is enormous.
You can support the charity by making a one-off donation, regular giving, choosing to leave a gift in your Will, or by taking part in your own fundraising challenge.
No matter the size of the contribution, by supporting My WiSH you can make a meaningful difference to someone’s experience of care during their most vulnerable moments.
Our charity team is here to help you every step of the way.
If you enjoy a physical adventure, we have a limited number of charity places for the Cambridge Half Marathon in March 2026. The flat, scenic 13.1mile course through the city centre is a fantastic experience whether you are a seasoned runner or trying something new.
We are also offering places in the National and Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenges, a London to Paris cycle ride and a skydive.
But fundraising does not have to be about fitness. Our flagship event, Grow Your Dough, is a creative challenge where teams start with £50 and use it to raise as much as they can over three months. From bake sales to quiz nights, the possibilities are endless.
We hold a launch event to kick things off and an awards evening at the end to recognise everyone’s efforts.
We are also introducing Treecycle in early 2026. We will collect your real Christmas tree in exchange for a donation, then recycle it into chippings.
And do not forget the NHS Big Tea every July –the perfect excuse to pop the kettle on and raise funds while celebrating the NHS’s birthday.

Summer Cooling Tips…
It’s best to avoid extreme temperatures as too much heat can increase swelling of the affected limb(s) rooms, which includes not sitting too close to heat sources such as bar-b-ques and outdoor heaters. Using a cooling spray, iced water in a spray bottle works well, on your compression garment can help cool the affected limb and yourself.
Incidentally, if you sit out on concrete or by a brick or whitewashed wall – the sun’s rays also reflect off these. Ultraviolet rays are invisible and are present in every season, so wearing sun protection isn’t something that you should reserve for a summery beach day or being on holiday. The 11th Rotary Classic Car Show raised over £40,000 for charity
The annual event took place on July 13th at Culford School, where fabulous weather contributed to a successful day for more than 6,000 visitors.
This was the 11th Car Show organised by the Bury Abbey Rotary Club, with support from other nearby Rotary clubs, and the fifth year it has been hosted at Culford School.
Over the past 11 years, the Classic Car Show has raised more than £200,000 for various local charities, with East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) serving as this year’s headline charity.
Building on the success of previous years, the Car Show featured a variety of entertainment. With more than 40 car clubs and around 600 cars on display, attendees enjoyed a spectacular selection of vehicles gleaming in the

sunshine. It was delightful to witness the different car clubs and their coordinated displays. The lines of Morgans, Jensens, and Mustangs contrasted with the more eclectic assembly of individual exhibitors, whose cars were equally impressive. The sheer variety of cars was astonishing.
Additionally, attendees enjoyed a wide range of food options, from Mexican cuisine to hog roasts, as well as local craft stalls. This year, the Suffolk Soul

The headline charity supported by the Car Show, EACH, provides essential services to numerous families across East Anglia. Days like this are crucial for raising both funds and awareness to continue their vital work.
Bury Abbey Rotary President Melanie Lesser stated, “This has been our busiest show ever, with blue skies, sunshine, and a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day. We are pleased to have raised over £40,000 for the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, along with the many other local charities supported by Bury Abbey Rotary Club. Special thanks go to Culford School and all our 160 volunteers, including those from the USAF and many organisations across the region. We would also like to express our gratitude to our 17 car show sponsors, including 7 new ones for this year.”

Sisters Choir added to the atmosphere by entertaining the crowd with their performances.

In the July session we did decoupaging taking some plain garden potting pots and turning them into pretty planters using table napkin tissue and glue. You have to be careful of tearing the tissue when its wet and you can get a little sticky from the glue however the finished result can be very effective and colourful.

In the September session we will be looking ahead to Christmas getting preparations in early. Crafting is all about rewards, being creative, having fun and going home with a sense of achievement.

LATEST NEWS

Thank you to all of those who attended the last Moreton Hall Residents Association meeting on 14th July 2025 great turn out and lots covered.
This past month has continued to be a busy one with the publication of our “Big Listen 2025” report and work with councils and others on issues such as HGVs, antisocial behaviour and the ongoing Royal Mail parking issue.
Local Government Reorganisation
In the last edition, we focused on Suffolk County Council’s proposals, and so this edition is focusing on West Suffolk Council’s.
To support their work to develop a final plan, the district and borough councils have carried out engagement with communities and partners, including an online survey which has received more than 1,700 responses to date In the survey, the most important attribute for future local government in Suffolk is: “Being LocalEnsuring decisions that affect you, and where you live, are made close to you - by councillors and a council that understands your needs and represents your area”.
The district councils are going to focus on developing a model for three new unitary councils on the basis that:
a. residents are saying that the most important thing to them is a local connection to their council;
GET IN TOUCH
b. three councils would have the capacity, capability and resilience to drive service improvement on the things that matter most to residents; and
c. it is strongly believed by the district councils that this model is most likely to meet both the Government’s criteria for local government reorganisation and our own local criteria, specifically the need to:
- Best reflect a meaningful sense of place and identity to support local democracy whilst also ensuring the need to create economies of scale;
- Bolster the future financial sustainability of public services by considering the right scale and ability to drive this vision with system partners, as well as provide resilience in the short, medium and longer term;
- Respect the character of Suffolk which is reflected in its diverse geography and local community identities;
Moreton Hall Residents Association, Chairman: Melanie Soanes
Next Moreton Hall Residents Meeting

Next community pick Sunday 28th September 2025 10am – 12pm. Meet at Moreton Hall Community Centre.
Activities for children and young people in the holidays
With summer holidays in full swing, Moreton Hall Residents Association has collated a list of activities and opportunities for children and young people to do in the holidays. This can be found on the Moreton Hall Residents Association website moretonhallresidents.wordpress.com in the “Latest News” section.
- Ensure focus on the future growth of, and opportunities across, East Anglia;
- Provide the resilient, accountable leadership and capacity required to meet community needs and deliver public sector reform; and
- Ensure our communities, businesses and residents have a strong voice on the East Anglian Mayoral Strategic Authority, and enable them to support the wider devolution agenda and delivery.
West Suffolk Council will debate/vote on their final proposal to submit at their September meeting.
Moreton Hall Residents Association and Eastgate Ward Community Association have written to both councils highlighting the need for more information for residents and inviting them to both take part in an open residents meeting with a Q&A options. Keep an eye out on Moreton Hall Voice Facebook page for more information.

Bury Abbey Rotary Golf Day 2025: A Swinging Success!
The annual Bury Abbey Rotary Golf Day took place on Suffolk Day, June 20th, 2025, at the picturesque Stowmarket Golf Club, attracting a fantastic turnout of golfers eager to support an excellent cause. This year, an impressive £6,333 was raised for the headline charity, Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS), surpassing last year’s total.

Craft Corner

Welcome to my crafty column! Every month I share a crafty activity for you to try at home. Check out my facebook page for more info www.facebook.com/thecraftyfoxes or visit www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk

You will need… a paper cup, some felt tips (or coloured tape), 2 bamboo skewers, some tape and a balloon.
Decorate your paper cup using felt tip pens or tape.
Tape 2 bamboo sticks to either side of the cup on the outside.
Blow up a balloon so it’s just the right size to fit in between the gap made from the 2 sticks and tie a knot.
Tape balloon in place if it doesn’t stay put and cut off the knot.
Cut out a photo of yourself and place in cup sticking out so it appears you are in the hot air balloon.
If you don’t have a photo you could get your grown ups to take one with your arms up like you’re cheering. This months’ make is a super effective fun way to display a photo and brighten up your windowsill!
TOP TIP…

If you have a small toy, you could place that in the cup poking out! You could also add some star stickers to the balloon for decoration.

Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church

What does your pelvic floor have to do with Praying?
Over the last 12 weeks our services at Christ Church have been about praying.
The content of a prayer can vary. The place can vary. The decision to pray alone, or with others can vary. Whether we pray out loud, or in our own minds, can vary. There is no wrong or right way.
Sarah, (our Minister), said ‘Our heart is restless until we rest in God. Going to God and seeking his will’. Which I found a perfect way to explain praying.
A couple of years ago I got chatting to a gentleman in my favourite coffee shop. After a brief introduction to each other
I found out he was a retired vicar. I felt comfortable to speak openly about the mindfulness of going to church, and the help it gives me to manage my own problems. The gentleman acknowledged how wonderful it would be if more people gave faith a chance to help them in their lives.
To me praying can be so simple, but so effective. It can deliver strength when we feel weak. Praying can provide peace in your heart and mind. If you pray collectively, you will feel that bond, a mutual understanding. It can also bring resilience, to see things through, especially when we regularly pray.

Perhaps you need a prompt card to help you pray. Sarah gave us a card which offers direction for our prayers, which can help you direct your thoughts. We also have a tree in church to place our prayers on, and we have been able to share with the congregation any prayers that have been answered.
Talking of answering, if you are unsure of the link between doing your pelvic floor exercises, and praying, just read this article again, as the answers are right in front of you! Or you could join one of my classes to learn more about the importance of your pelvic floor.
ALTERNATIVES TO PLASTIC PACKAGING
At various times over the last 8 years, we have talked about plastic. It’s uses, it’s problems, it’s forms, but I do not recall that we have ever looked at alternatives in any detail. This month I thought it would be a good idea to check out a few materials that can do the same thing as plastic but do not come from oil.
Of-course we are all well aware of forever shopping bags made from products other than plastic such as organic cotton, jute and hemp. But how about an alternative to plastic cling film, one of the best is beeswax wraps. They do exactly the same thing as the plastic but they are 100% Plastic Free. They are made of natural ingredients and can be used several times after washing. A brilliant alternative that is biodegradable, compostable and planet friendly. I love this idea and have a nice supply in my packaging drawer.

Another innovative packaging material is mushroom based. This packaging material is primarily made using mycelium, the root structure of fungi. Mycelium is a natural binding agent that can grow around and bond with agricultural waste materials, such as corn stalks, straw, and sawdust. This can be grown in moulds of the required

shape and size. Once the structure is robust and strong enough, the material is dried and the finished result is a lightweight, resilient, and biodegradable packing material.
It can be used to provide protective packaging for electronic devices, food containers, and even building materials. They are also resistant to heat, moisture, and pests, ensuring the integrity of the packaging during storage and transportation. Finally, the production of mushroom-based packaging helps sequester carbon dioxide, as mycelium growth absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere. This contributes to reducing the overall carbon footprint of the packaging industry.
Edible six pack rings
It’s a distressing thing to see a seagull or turtle stuck in a six pack ring, thankfully a craft beer company has come up with a brilliant idea to counter the problem. Saltwater Brewery in Delray Beach, Florida has created edible six pack rings. They are made from beer byproducts during the brewing process such as barley and wheat and are
completely safe for humans, turtles and fish to eat.
So simple, and not only are they edible but they are also 100% biodegradable and compostable, the ultimate in sustainability.

The only drawback is that edible six-pack rings are more expensive to produce than conventional plastic products and so they have not been taken up by many other breweries. However, the big beer producers have virtually all moved away from plastic six pack rings by using cardboard surround packaging. A good alternative to the Saltwater brewery solution and using a recyclable material.

We have mentioned just a few of the interesting ideas for alternative packaging products but we have a very long way to go before we remove plastic from our food and drink industry.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE
Race Across the World
Local Mother and Son team of Caroline and Tom from Hargrave near Bury were the worthy winners of this season’s Race Across the World. Congratulations to them!
Have you ever wondered why Jesus sent out his disciples two by two? No phones, no maps, and no bags – just each other and their annoying habits!?
Watching the fifth series of the hit BBC show got me thinking about Jesus’ strategy of sending them this way. Pairs of very different disciples are about to discover what it’s like to get up close and personal. They will share the joy of unexpected hospitality. They will learn to bear with one another and carry each other’s burdens. Perhaps the partnership is the point.
Such is the premise at the heart of the show that follows pairs racing around 9000 miles across continents with limited cash, no tech, and just each other for company, often on sweaty thirteen-hour plus bus rides. Ostensibly a competition, what makes the show so compelling for the
6 million of us watching, is not so much the racing, but imagining how we’d fare if it we were stuck with our chosen other.
We often rush through life as if the aim is to get furthest, fastest. We can be so preoccupied with our next task that we miss the moment with the person we’re with, or worse, believe they are a hindrance on the way to the next destination. But watching the show has made me wonder if that’s the way Jesus would have us run our race.

journey to work, school run, or first Zoom meeting, choosing to see others as companions more than competition.
I suspect that the makers of Race Across the World know all this. With playful provocation, they challenge the contestants to be honest about their frailty, embrace their need for one another, and discover the joy of racing with others rather than against them.
I don’t think any of us needs to backpack through Asia to learn the same. We can experiment on this morning’s
Life does have a way of feeling like a race - indeed, the Bible describes it as such: “Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of faith” But Jesus shows us a better way to run it — not alone, not in a hurry, but side by side. So that’s what we should try to do: run with others, eyes fixed not on the next checkpoint, but on each other, and Him. And it’s available on iPlayer if you have not yet seen it!
