Welcome to the June issue

Can we finally dare to believe that summer is here to stay? (or at least stick around for more than a weekend). There’s something about this time of year that brings a real buzz to the community – longer days, warmer evenings, and a good excuse to sit in a pub garden with something cold in hand... Purely for research, of course.

Speaking of which, on page 8 we’ve rounded up some of the best beer gardens in and around Bury St Edmunds – perfect spots for soaking up the sun, catching up with friends, or simply enjoying a quiet cold drink. And if you fancy bringing the summer vibes home, we’ve got you covered there too: there’s a delicious Halloumi Kebab recipe on page 42 and a Rosé Sangria Spritz on page 45, that’s basically summer in a glass.

As we head into the warmer summer months, there’s a noticeable increase in local events and activities taking place in and around the community. It’s a great time to get out and about, enjoy the sunshine, and see what’s happening nearby. And don’t forget — Father’s Day is on Sunday 15th June.

We hope you enjoy this issue, packed with news, events, and great features from our amazing local businesses. Enjoy the month ahead, take care, and we’ll be back with more in July!

Pints in the sunshine: Pub gardens worth lingering in this June

As Bury St Edmunds shakes off the last of spring and steps into full-on summer mode, there’s one simple pleasure calling us: a pint in a sunny pub garden. Whether you’re catching up with friends, celebrating the end of the school term, or just in need of a peaceful moment with a cold drink, our town has just the spot this summer.

Here are five of our favourite local pub gardens that are perfect for lingering in this June:

THE DOG & PARTRIDGE

Affectionately known as the D&P, this classic pub offers customers a blend of classic and contemporary styles. Step through the back to find a surprisingly spacious garden, beautifully decorated and plenty of friendly chatter. It has a strong community feel and one of the best spots in town to catch the late afternoon sun. Bonus: their beer selection is brilliant and always well-kept.

THE QUEEN’S HEAD

Stylish but still relaxed, The Queen’s Head has carved out a spot as one of the cooler destinations in Bury without losing its soul. The garden is small but perfectly formed: think festoon lights, potted plants, and a buzzing crowd most evenings. Great for cocktails, casual dates, or catching the last of the light after work.

THE MASON’S ARMS

This historic pub feels like a proper slice of old Bury. The garden out back is a bit of a hidden gem, full of character. A favourite for locals who like their ale traditional and their garden peaceful. You’ll often find a mix of regulars and newcomers enjoying a quiet pint or two.

DAMSON & WILDE

More bistro than boozer, Damson & Wilde is ideal for those who want their Aperol Spritz with a side of olives and ambience. Their enclosed garden terrace is one of the prettiest in town, with leafy

plants, fairy lights, and a laidback continental feel. It’s a great spot for long lunches that turn into early dinners. Bring your sunglasses and your appetite.

THE MORETON HALL PUB

The Moreton Hall Pub has a spacious garden that’s ideal for families, larger groups, or anyone wanting a relaxed pint without heading into the town centre. There’s a friendly, neighbourhood feel here, with plenty of seating, decent pub grub, and easy parking. It’s especially popular on sunny weekends, so arrive early for the best spot!

Southgate Community Fun Day 2025

It all started back in 2014 and for the last ten years(we missed a year because of Covid) - the playing field at Hardwick Primary School has hosted the hugely popular Southgate Community Fun Day on May Bank Holiday Monday.

This year was extra special with an incredible twelve teams taking part in the interschools Year 1/Reception and Year 2 football tournaments...

That’s approaching 100 players, massively encouraged by enthusiastic parents and supporters with Thurston Primary School deservedly winning both.

New this year was the brilliant Rock Choir, who rehearse at the Community Centre, and a special performance from the Hardwick Primary School Theatre Music Group led by Miss Weller-Poley ahead of their July appearance on

Moreton Hall WI

Our AGM is always a great opportunity to look back at the past year of WI activity and this year was no exception.

We enjoyed monthly talks from a wide variety of speakers as well as lots of chat and friendship. With the Committee and President elected our 2025/2026 year is underway and several events are planned for over the summer months in addition to our monthly meetings. Our speaker at our May

meeting was the Operation Manager from Restore Women’s Aid in BSE, who told us about some of their work and the services offered. Sadly, the need is as great as ever with 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men in Suffolk being a victim of domestic abuse of some kind, with coercive control becoming quite prevalent.

In addition to a safe house for women and children fleeing high risk abuse situations, Restore also run four outreach hubs in Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill, Newmarket and Stowmarket.

Sadly, they are seeing an increase in abuse in the 1624-year-old age group and there is a need to help these young people understand what healthy relationships look like.

Funding is their biggest issue and MHWI are proud that Restore is their Charity of the Year.

We are a friendly group and, if you would like more information, please do get in touch with Alison on 07557 005343 or follow us on Facebook.

Hospital consultants go the distance and Dr Ed gets a makeover – all for My WiSH Charity

This month has been full of adventure, achievement, and a brand-new look for our charity mascot – all thanks to our wonderful supporters.

Two West Suffolk Hospital consultants, Will Petchey and Liam Ring, have completed a five-day trek through the deserts and mountains of Jordan, raising £4,415 for My WiSH Charity. Their journey took them to Petra, the breathtaking ‘Rose City’ and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Covering an average of 15km a day, Will and Liam tackled ridges, mountains and vast desert terrain, braving the heat – and even the odd scorpion – along the way.

Will, a nephrology consultant, said: “We are exceedingly fortunate to have had this opportunity. It was a fantastic experience and one that will always stay with us. We’re incredibly grateful to all our friends, colleagues, patients and relatives who supported

us – we’re proud to have raised so much for such an important charity.”

Liam, a consultant cardiologist, was inspired to fundraise after witnessing My WiSH’s impact firsthand: “In 2018, they helped fund a bespoke Cardiac Diagnostic Centre at West Suffolk Hospital. This

transformed my working life and continues to help us deliver the best possible care to our patients.”

Sally Daniels, fundraising manager at My WiSH, added: “Will and Liam’s efforts are truly appreciated. Their commitment, as members of staff who see

Will Petchey and Liam Ring during their trek.

the charity’s work every day, makes their achievement all the more meaningful. The funds raised will make a real difference across our hospital.”

And while Will and Liam were trekking overseas, something exciting was happening closer to home – our charity mascot, Dr Ed, has had a makeover!

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of three fantastic local companies – Treatt, Sema Lease and Sealey Tools – Dr Ed is now

sporting a brand-new look. To celebrate, Dr Ed toured West Suffolk Hospital, stopping by Rainbow Ward, the fracture clinic and paediatric emergency department to meet patients and staff.

Joanne Landucci, head of fundraising at My WiSH Charity, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Treatt, Sema Lease, and Sealey Tools for generously funding Dr Ed’s amazing new look.

“As a much-loved figure in our charity, it was fantastic to see how warmly Dr Ed

was received during our walk around the hospital - the smiles, waves, and high fives said it all! We’re really excited to bring Dr Ed along to future events to help raise awareness and support for the vital work we do to enhance patient care across West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.”

From overseas treks to local visits, every effort supports our mission to enhance care for patients across West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. Thank you to all who make this possible.

To find out more, visit our website

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School

This month we feature the amazing Lower Key Stage 2 show ‘Mystery at Magpie Manor’ with fantastic performances from the children, huge hard work by the teachers and support staff and of course under the usual energetic and dynamic direction of Miss Weller-Poley.

Need more from your existing solar installation?

If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system

The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours.

A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it.

If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage.

Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

Why choose Generate + Store?

• Local business for 20+ years

• NICEIC and MCS accredited

• 95% of customers recommend friends & family

• Full end-to-end service with great customer support

• No hard sales!

Taking small steps and making small adjustments can make all the difference and be rewarding too.

Exercise plays an important part in coping with living with Lymphoedema and Lipodema and with the health maintenance of these chronic conditions. It doesn’t have to be marathon running or mountain climbing - doing housework and gardening count as exercise! However you exercise the important thing is to do it regularly, so Keep Moving. Doing Simple Lymphatic Drainage (SLD) massages twice a day can help to reduce painful fluid retention. Using a handheld roller to massage arms and legs can also be beneficial. Local skip hire firm goes 100% landfill diversion

Bury St Edmunds residents now have a cleaner, greener option when it comes to skip hire - and it’s all thanks to a major new investment just down the A134.

SunSkips, the trusted local skip hire company, has officially hit 100% landfill diversion, meaning none of the waste collected in its bright orange skips is sent directly to landfill.

The company has always looked to the horizon of recycling innovation, leveraging both traditional

recycling and energy from waste to get the maximum value out of our local rubbish.

And now, construction and demolition waste is being processed at SunEnviro’s brand-new aggregate wash plant in Thetford.

SunAggregates can clean and recover over 100,000 tonnes of waste a year to produce high-quality materials ready to go back into the circular economy.

“People want to do the right thing when it comes to waste,” said managing director Mat Stewart. “This new facility helps our customers do exactly that, without any extra hassle or cost.”

Whether you’re clearing out your garage or renovating your home, booking a skip with SunSkips now means your waste stays in the circular economy and out of landfill.

This months’ make is great to while away a lazy Sunday in the garden! Making a spinning eye ball!

You will need… thick card, cut from a brown box is ideal. Paints or pretty wrapping paper or cut up colours from magazines.

Firstly on the cardboard draw around something round like an old CD or saucer or small plate or bowl

Using a bamboo skewer or pointy stick make 2 holes in the centre 5mm apart from each other

Now decorate the circle to look like a giant eye ball using paper and a glue stick or paints. Using a smaller circle to draw around works well so you have the contrast of colours to look like a real eye.

If you have the time do the other side too.

Place string through both holes and tie a knot. The string should be a grown ups arms length long from fingers to shoulder.

Now pinch both ends of the string with both hands and then keeping one hand still circle the other hand round and round so the string gets all twisted up. Like when you spin a playground swing round and round and then release it. When you stop spinning the string undoes cause the wheel to spin round and round making a cool pattern on the eye ball.

TOP TIP…

Move your hands closer and then further away to keep the circle spinning. How long can each family member keep it spinning for. Time them.

Cricket Club BURY ST EDMUNDS

The 2025 cricket season is well under way with excellent conditions for cricket but not so good for farmers and gardeners.

Clearly a lot of emphasis is on the senior teams playing at a high level but the Victory Sports Ground is a multi-sports venue with football the main winter sport, plus

tennis and croquet being played throughout the year.

The ground is operated by a Community Interest Company with all proceeds going back into providing an outstanding sporting facility.

Recently a special day was devoted to providing disabled cricketers a chance to enjoy the game, it was run by Suffolk Cricket and proved a great success.

A large number of local schools will be using the ground during the summer at a time when cricket facilities in schools are difficult to maintain.

Those involved with operating the Victory Ground are most grateful to the support given by West Suffolk Council, Bury Town Council and the local councillors who along with the many sponsors make cricket available to play at an affordable price for very many people.

Come along and enjoy cricket every Saturday and most Sundays –the bar will be open!

10.30am-12pm – Stay and Play For parents/carers of babies to pre-school age having fun with toys and time to chat over a drink & biscuit.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Can you recall what it was that you have done for the first time? Some of you may be able to instantly remember the first time you took your feet off the floor, and peddled a bicycle without a parent holding onto it. Perhaps it was the first exam you did, the first job you started but what about more recently?

I recently listened to the pod cast ‘What’s up Doc’s’ in which a psychiatrist explained that our brain likes the same footpath, following a welltrodden route, providing a clear destination and easy to walk on. When we deviate from the path our brain gets irritated as it doesn’t know the destination or the route we are taking, and the problems we might incur.

Unconsciously we can make decisions in our day that keep us on track, we know the

routine of getting up in the morning, the food we like to eat, the jobs we have to do. We also make some conscious decisions to avoid things that are going to be challenging, like asking a stranger to pick up a piece of rubbish they have dropped, or booking tickets to visit another country. This is because our brain is giving us signals, maybe from experiences in our past, that we should not change what we do.

In Isaiah 43: 18-19 ‘Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.’

God doesn’t remember our past, he gives us a fresh start. If we reflect on the new things we have done, most of us can

also remember the person or people that supported us through that change. David Tennent said that when he first played Hamlet before going on stage, he curled up in a ball in his dressing room and cried, until another actor came in and encouraged him to be brave, face his fears, and do his best. He may never have been the actor he is today without that support.

I truly believe God is always there encouraging us, helping us step off the welltrodden path to explore new adventures and help us live life to the full. Maybe you have friends or family that have and will always be there for you.

One thing’s for certain, doing something for the first time can feel scary, but it also makes us feel alive. So what can you do for the first time today?

As I write this article I am looking out over our parched lawn baked by continuous sunny dry weather over the last few weeks. By chance there is a light shower, enough to wet the patio slabs but not enough to penetrate the ground. We need some rain, actually a lot of rain to avoid a drought this Summer.

Just a quick reminder, each cubic metre of water costs us between £7.90 (1 person in a household) to £6 (3 people in a household), and adds 10.4kg to your carbon footprint. Any water you can save helps you financially and reduces your greenhouse gas output.

Cleaning your drive and patio with a power washer can use 1,000 litres of water an hour. By cleaning with a bucket of water and a broom will give you a good workout and save a huge volume of water.

If you are a keen gardener, water butts are a must. That’s free water, when it rains of course, and I am led to believe that the water is better for your plants than tap water. I recently saw a household with 6 butts in a row, all linked by pipes, as one butt fills it passes water to the next and so on.

Goodness

Farmers are tearing their hair out, crops are already failing, we need some long-term planning to make sure our food providers are adequately supplied to help maintain their businesses for the future and ensure our long-term food security. This is surely a matter of urgency, and our water companies need to step up to help.

Of course this needs government level intervention, but as mentioned last month each of us can help. You may think what difference does it make if I save 50 litres of water a month, however scale that up to 1 million people doing the same think and it’s more than a drop in the ocean.

knows how many litres of water they are collecting a year.

Another great tip for gardeners, don’t use a hose, use a watering can and be precise where you deliver the water to the soil around the base of your plants.

In the kitchen, running a tap until the water is cold wastes about 4 litres each time. Why not fill a covered jug and put it in the fridge for later use. Do this every day and you will save 1,460 litres of water a year which works out at around £8.00 a year = (15kg CO₂).

Don’t wash vegetables under a running tap, use a bowl of cold water instead. This saves about 5 litres of water every time and you can then use the water in the bowl on household plants. Do this 5 times a week and you will save 1,300 litres of water. In financial terms this is £7.80 a year (=13kg CO₂).

There are so many ways to save water and if you want to see more, please go to the Ecofrenzy website.

Happy saving!

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Tucking In!

For about ten years I’ve had the pleasure of being part of the Southgate Church team at the Community Fun Day on the May Day Bank Holiday.

My favourite role amidst all that the Church does on the day, is serving at the tuck shop. The stall is a bit of a throwback to a traditional sweet shop, as we specialise in items, whether chewy, fizzy, sour or chocolatey, costing between 1 and 10 pence. It’s wonderful watching the children carefully choosing what they want and adding up the running total to make sure that the £1 they’ve been given by Mum, Dad or a grandparent, is not exceeded. So, phrases like – “you’ve spent 35 pence so far, or “you have 10 pence left”, and reminders of which sweet costs what, are constant throughout the day! Somehow, I hope that by doing this, we are helping with adding up and budgeting skills. Who knows, I may have served a future Chancellor of the Exchequer or Governor of the Bank of England!

The day always goes well, as different members of the local community come together. With the football tournament

as a special feature, watched by family and friends, and fun stalls, places to eat and space to play in the grounds of the school - it’s a perfect way to spend the day.

There are two important things which enable events like the community fun day to happen. Firstly, it is a wonderful example of cooperation between different groups; most notably, Southgate Community Partnership, Hardwick Primary School and Southgate Church. And for this and any community to flourish, various groups and agencies need to work together for the community, that is for the good of all.

are built on the hard work of individual volunteers; people who go above and beyond, working very hard to ensure that lots of people have a good time. Certainly, for Southgate Church, we know that without volunteers, our work in the community would grind to a halt, and this is true for thousands of churches across the

Similarly, the Community Fun Day is built on the endeavours of many people, but especially the Southgate Community Partnership team and trustees. They say that the number of people willing or able to be a volunteer, is decreasing. I do hope that this trend doesn’t continue because without events like the Fun Day, our lives would be much poorer and our communities less friendly places in which to live.

So, a big, big thank you to all who made the Southgate Community Fun Day such a great occasion, even with a prolonged rain shower thrown in! And maybe next year I’ll see you at the church tuck shop stall –there’s lots of grown-ups who quietly say – “and pop 50 pence worth of those sweets in a bag for me, too, will you?!”

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole, how are we already in June? Golf season is full flow now and this month we are looking forward to yet more great competitions including the US Open.

US OPEN PREVIEW

This is the third major of the year and another chance to go down in golfing history as a major champion. As always The US Open will be the toughest of tests, the PGA of America always set the course very challenging.

As the prestigious Oakmont Country Club prepares to host the upcoming U.S. Open, golf enthusiasts are in for a wild ride with the jaw-dropping alterations made

to the iconic course. Renovated from scratch to recapture its original essence from the early 1900s to the mid-1940s, Oakmont is all set to challenge even the most seasoned pros in June.

Bryson is back as the defending champion this year after a stunning performance last year, could he win again? Will the changes should put everyone in the same position, so who will learn the new aspects

quickly and become US Open champion 2025.

So if your looking to pick a winner then all you need to find is... someone who drives it long and straight, hits precision iron shots every hole and holes their fare share of putts as well.

So who will perform well around this venue… So it could be anyone in this years field, so sit back and enjoy this event!

COACHES CORNER – WATCH THE WORLDS BEST PLAYERS

Continuing on the major championship theme, I want to draw your attention to the TV coverage and how the players plan and play this venue.

Course management is so key around any course, pay attention to player/caddy conversations and the numbers they talk about when planning out shots. Where they are looking to land shots to to either make an approach shot easier or to allow the player to have an easier putt.

Yes, I know what you are all thinking, they are the best players in the world and they can hit these shots on demand most of the time so it’s easier for them to make these plans.

You are correct in a way…. HOWEVER, if you stand over a shot with a clear plan of what you

want to do from tee to green this will allow you have make a fully committed swings each time you address the ball.

After the plan has been made another area to watch will be the players pre-shot routine. These will be bullet proof, they will do the same thing each and every time they play a shot. If anything disturbs this process they will reset and go through it again.

This allows them to stay committed to the plan they have made with their caddie and instills the confidence to perform the shot needed.

Watch and learn from the best in the world this month!

I hope this edition of the 19th Hole has helped, if you would like any advice or help with your golf game please get in contact. Here’s to a great time out on the golf course, and I will see you next month.
