WHAT IS CRYOTHERAPY?

An advanced Cryotherapy innovation that is a fast, effective, safe and a new solution for removal of skin imperfections. Procedures typically last from 5 to 30 seconds, so you can be in and out of the salon quickly.

HOW IT WORKS

It emits a fine jet of Nitrous Oxide under high pressure, which allows the clinician to work with millimetre precision. This destroys the tissue by freezing the inter-cellular fluid, forming ice shards and crystals which rupture the membrane, thereby destroying the cell. That means there will be no collateral damage to healthy tissue. It’s so incredibly accurate and practical.

Cosmetic procedures such as skin tags, milia and cherry angiomas are no longer being

treated by many doctors on the NHS. With Cryotherapy you can now have these treatments with us here at Suffolk Cryotherapy.

The applicator is held as close as possible to the skin imperfection and moved quickly towards and away from it. This could be from 1-30 seconds, depending on the size and depth.

For more information, contact Suffolk Cryotherapy on 07548 446094 or visit our website at: www.suffolkcryotherapy.co.uk

The speaker at our March Meeting was John Foreman CBE. John served as the Defence Attaché in Kyiv from 2008 to 2011 and later served as the UK Defence Attaché in Moscow from 2019 to 2022 including the period of the invasion of Ukraine, the build up to it and its consequences. He is the only British officer to be the Defence Attaché in both countries which allowed him to give us a unique insight into how Russia views both Ukraine and Europe.

John gave us a fascinating and informative talk, illustrated with a large variety of slides showing elements of his life in Moscow and what Russia is like outside the capital. He spoke briefly about life in Moscow during Covid and went on to outline how difficult life became for UK nationals as relationships between the UK and Russia deteriorated. What stood out was the intense pressure of being under scrutiny and working 24/7 and we understood his need to get a better life balance at the end of the posting.

The speaker at our meeting on Wednesday 2nd April will be Michelle Russell who will be talking about her work with stained glass and selling some of her pieces. Visitors are very welcome. £5 on the door. For further details please contact Alison on 07557 005343.

My WiSH welcomes new head of fundraising

We have big news at My WiSH Charity! We would like to introduce our new head of fundraising Joanne, Landucci.

Jo joins us with over 12 years of fundraising experience and expertise across the charity sector and is passionate about supporting NHS services across West Suffolk.

On joining the charity, Joanne said:

“I am full of excitement and motivation to make a lasting difference at My WiSH Charity, which supports such

a worthy cause across WSFT. The fundraising team has given me a warm welcome - they are a talented bunch, and I feel extremely lucky to be part of the team.”

As a charity, we support a wide range of services, from West Suffolk Hospital and Newmarket Community Hospital to community programs in health centres and patients’ homes. Given

this broad scope, there’s a lot for Jo to learn. However, with a family background in nursing and her previous experience in hospice care, she understands the impact our staff have every day and is excited to support them in making a difference.

Fundraising is our aim, but what do we do with the amazing donations we receive?

Jo Landucci, head of fundraising My WiSH Charity

£50 provides our maternity bereavement team with a memory box full of items to ensure previous moments are captured at this most difficult of times.

£100 can provide a lot of toys! We are passionate about supporting our young patients and toys are not just for playing. They can be used to help distract during difficult procedures and also to help therapists during assessments and therapy sessions.

£5 provides a ‘going home’ pack. This pack contains bread, cereal, milk, tea, coffee etc to ensure a patient has a couple of meals worth of food before their home care package is reinstated. This has proved an invaluable service and on average we provide around 10-15 packs a month enabling patients to go home.

£200 buys a vial of magnetic beads used with patients undergoing surgery for breast cancer. The beads are used with a £25,000 machine we purchased called a Sentimag. This machine allows the surgeon to pinpoint the first lymph node which can not only help prevent lymphedema but makes the surgery less invasive and recovery quicker.

£1,000 means we have recently purchased a video laryngoscope for the neonatal unit.

£10,000 was raised by our stroke nurses enabling us to buy a projector which plays interactive games on the table and floor. This allows the occupational therapists to hold sessions with several patients at once, not only ensuring everyone gets the therapy they need but providing social interaction which is just as important.

World Book Day at Hardwick Primary School was celebrated in style and colour and costumes, all about illustrations and drawing!

The children dressed up and had an amazing time participating in a live drawalong with Nick Sharratt, the talented illustrator of books like You Choose, Shark in the Park, and The Grumpy Bird.

They were fully immersed in the creative process, learning tips and tricks from Nick himself. It was a day filled with excitement and creativity, with a big focus on the art of illustration!

What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School

Staff at the school joined in the fun, spotty and black and white, all dressed up as Cruella de Vil and the 101 Dalmatians.

It is amazing how often just looking after yourself can make such a big difference!

At LSS’s 24th March meeting, Sarah of Footwork Reflexology and Tracy Simpson of Celestial Feet Reflexology gave us an engaging introduction to Reflexology and its role in supporting those with Lymphoedema.

The interactive session, trying a few reflexes on the hand which correspond lymphatic drainage reflexes, was quite revealing as to which pressure points relate to the different areas of the body and was fun too.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy and is a technique that applies gentle pressure to your feet or hands. It aims to bring about a state of relaxation and help the body’s own healing process. Reflexology works in a similar way to acupressure and acupuncture.

Sarah and Tracy also gave us tips about finding a professional reflexologist, who is qualified, an accredited member of the Association of Reflexologists and fully understands delivering lymphatic reflexology.

WHAT WILL YOU FIND TO LOVE?

What will you find to love this spring in our green spaces? Given the breadth of species to be found in the town’s water meadows, it’s of no surprise that asking our biological recorders for their ‘top 10’ species, to showcase in our forthcoming Wildlife Day, caused some lengthy debate.

For example, how would you choose between a creature who is lethal enough to be able to jump 14 times its own body size to land on its prey from behind, but yet will dance for its mate; or one who is so beautiful it was hunted to near extinction for its plumes that were used to decorate ladies’ hats?

Listening to the debate, I realised that our human interest in the other species we share this special place with, is as unique as we are.

Whether it’s the peace and serenity one can find being outdoors and feeling our connections with the wondrous web of life; learning about the fascinating roles so many other species have played in our human histories; or whether it’s just simply enjoying the beauty of nature’s colours and form, there is something all of us can love right here on our doorstep. We are lucky enough have over 40 ha (100 acres) of water meadow and green spaces surrounding our two rivers, the Lark and the Linnet.

Everyone is invited to come and explore the amazing local wildlife with us at our upcoming Bury Wildlife Day, 17th May

9.30am - 4pm in the Abbey Gardens. We will have free guided walks and fascinating talks throughout the day, led by local ecology specialists and enthusiasts. Plus, creative activities and mini-beast safaris for all the family. From the approximately 500 species recorded in the meadows, the only reptile which lays eggs, a tree that helped build Venice and a tiny brightly coloured fungus which the elves drink from, also make the ‘top 10’; all will be revealed on the day!

So, save the date and check out our Facebook page for the full programme of events: Bury Water Meadows Group Facebook Page. Come along and find out what there is for you to love in the water meadows.

NEW BEGINNINGS…

Chronic Pain Support Group is run by patients for patients.

The group is designed to encompass all needs for all age ranges; members are troubled by a wide variety of conditions. The value the group offers in enabling members to make friendships with fellow sufferers is very important, but equally vital is to provide members with tools with which to help manage their condition more effectively.

Our experience has indicated that many feel isolated with their pain, each day can not only be

physically painful, but it can also be draining emotionally and spiritually. Sometimes it is from within progress can be made.

Members benefit from being amongst fellow sufferers where ideas and coping strategies can be shared. They feel more relaxed and by providing a ‘safe’ environment a support group is viable. Members have commented on the relief they have felt knowing they are not alone, they have found friends, skills and more importantly feel valued. Meaningful interactions can be facilitated and socialising brings people together.

Easter gingerbread chicks

Ingredients:

100g salted butter

3 tbsp golden syrup

100g dark muscovado sugar

½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

1 tbsp ground ginger

1 tsp ground cinnamon

225g plain flour

Icing sugar/food colouring

Method:

Step 1 – Heat the butter, syrup and sugar together in a small pan until melted, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool slightly.

Step 2 – Mix together the bicarb, ginger, cinnamon and flour in a large bowl. Pour in the buttery syrup mixture and stir to combine, then use your hands to bring together to form a dough. Add up to 1 tbsp of milk to combine if needed. The dough will be soft at this point, but it’ll firm up in the fridge.

Get all your ducks in a row and try these fun, Easter-themed biscuits. Super simple and great to make with the kids!

Step 3 – Put the dough on a sheet of baking parchment, shape into a rectangle, and lay another sheet of parchment on top of it. Roll the dough out to a thickness of ½cm. Transfer to a baking sheet to keep it flat, leaving the parchment in place, then chill in the fridge for 1 hr.

Step 4 – Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5 and line a large baking sheet with more baking parchment. Remove the dough from the fridge and cut out the chick shapes using a cookie cutter or by hand.

Sponsored by

Step 5 – Place the shapes, spread apart, on the lined baking sheet, and bake for 10-12 mins. (Depending on the size of the cutters you use, they might need a few minutes more or less cooking in the oven). Leave to cool completely on the baking sheet.

Step 6 – Meanwhile, mix up icing sugar and food colouring in yellow, orange and white (for the eye/wings). Decorate the cooled biscuits with the icing using a piping bag with a thin nozzle.

BURY DROP IN: CELEBRATING 10 YEARS

This year, Bury Drop In is celebrating their 10th anniversary.

It’s a decade marked by growth, triumph and a profound impact on the lives the volunteers serve. In early 2015, a steering group was formed to address the issue of the lack of provisions available to people who are homeless and vulnerably housed in Bury St Edmunds.

From this, Bury Drop In was born, opening its doors, in September 2015, 2 guests supported by 15 volunteers. Fast forward 10 years, it became clear that the charity needed to adapt their services to meet the increasingly complex needs of the community, serving about 50 guests per a session. Over the past decade, the charity has developed successful projects based upon a person-centred approach including emergency dental treatment, stopsmoking cessation and spin off self-help progression group, Table 1. The true measure of success lies in the stories of the people that we support.

“This is a very special landmark

year for the charity, as we look back over the last 10 years. We want to celebrate this special anniversary with our volunteers, guests, supporters and the community that we so proudly serve. To celebrate our historic milestone over the last decade, we will feature a collection of stories from volunteers and guests, a commemorative webpage and memories scrapbook,” said Ally Gill, marketing and communications manager at Bury Drop In.

Bury Drop In’s vision: to care for and inspire homeless people as they work ensure everyone has a place to call home. The charity will start planning towards the challenges of 2026-2030 later this year, reviewing their

current vision and strategy.

As Bury Drop In celebrate their 10th anniversary, Robert Green, chair of trustees, said: “Ten years ago when Bury Drop In was in its earliest days, what might be in store a decade later was far from our minds! Our focus was then and is now to serve, with Christian commitment, some of our most vulnerable and overlooked neighbours. The last ten years have been an exciting rollercoaster with an amazing team of committed volunteers at the heart of our work, and we’re here to stay!”

A steering committee will meet next month, made up of staff and volunteers, to help plan and support the anniversary celebrations.

Part of the route to net zero carbon emissions worldwide is the reduction of greenhouse gases emitted by every company and every person on the planet. Much of lowering carbon emissions can be driven by a move to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Some countries are working much harder than others to achieve these targets. I am very pleased to say that UK is doing better than most and has big ambitions to do better.

So, how are we doing?

UK used around 266 terawatt (TWh) hours of electricity in 2023 / 2024 – this represents a significant 22% drop since 2000 when it was 340 terawatt hours.

266 TWh is still an immense power consumption especially if we understand the meaning of a terawatt hour. 1 terawatt hour = 1 billion kilo watt hours (kWh).

Let’s break this down further, to a level that means something to us.

1 kWh is the amount of electricity required to run a 5W LED bulb for 200 hours, and at a household level, we use an average of 3,400kWh of electricity per year.

As a nation the direct consequence of using 266 trillion kWh of electricity in a year is a carbon footprint of around 79.8 million tonnes going into the atmosphere. Of that our 28.4 million households only contribute around 29 million tonnes CO₂, the rest comes from business and other users. From this information it therefore makes more sense to concentrate on the latter for the biggest reductions.

How can we do this? One of the main ways to decarbonise our country is a move to increase renewable energy sources. The reason being the greenhouse gas emissions to produce 1 kWh of electricity from solar and wind are significantly lower than producing electricity by burning fossil fuels – see below.

Coal - 950g CO₂ per kWh electricity

Natural Gas – 490g CO₂ per kWh electricity

Solar – 45g CO₂ per kWh electricity

Wind – 11g CO₂ per kWh electricity

We are powering forward with renewables as a nation and in 2024 - after a century of either coal or gas being our main source of electricity, wind power is now Britain’s single largest source of electricity generation. Over the 12 months to April, Britain’s wind farms produced 83 TWh of electricity, compared to 81 TWh from gas-fired power stations. Wind produced 32% of the country’s demand, versus 31% from natural gas. It’s important this is measured year-round, as this accounts properly for the intermittency of wind, which ‘doesn’t always blow’. I think that’s something we should be shouting about, but how often do you hear anyone talking about this success?

Also, according to ‘Statista’, in 2023, UK solar panels generated an impressive 15.225 terawatt hours of electricity, that’s about 6% of our overall electricity requirement. I was a bit surprised how small this is compared to wind, but it also shows the huge potential for more change.

The introduction of the new state run GB Energy could provide the catalyst for a quicker transition to renewables and in the last week we have had an announcement that GB Energy is providing £200 million to help 400 schools and hospitals to purchase solar panels, in reality this is the tip of the iceberg but it’s a start. There are also many grants from councils to help individuals decarbonise their homes which in turn reduces energy consumption and saves householders money. Contact your local council for more information.

Also, the more energy we can produce as a nation, the more security we have to protect ourselves from external influences such as the invasion of Ukraine and this will help to reduce our energy prices in the future.

Finally, if you have been reading my articles over the last 9 years you will know there are countless ways to reduce your energy requirement by small lifestyle changes.

Hop onto the ecofrenzy.com website to remind yourself. Remember for every kWh of electricity saved that’s an extra 22p in your pocket.

Who do you trust?

It’s an interesting question to ponder and very often we don’t need to use that trust, but the more we know there are people who we can turn to in any difficult situation the more comforted we are.

In April, after Easter Sunday, we will be looking at Luke Chapter 24 verses 1-12. In this we see it isn’t the apostles

that find Jesus’s body has gone but Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary Jame’s mother. They go to sprinkle spice in the tomb. When they discover the body has gone, they go back to tell the apostles, who rather than trusting their word, have to see it with their own eyes. It is interesting that most of us believe things when we see it

LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Easter is worth celebrating!

Some years ago, a family had a serious car accident. Danny, the youngest of two brothers was badly injured and needed a blood transfusion.

Fortunately, his eight-yearold brother Josh had the same blood-type as Danny. And so, his father gently explained to Josh what a blood transfusion was and how he could give his blood to save his little brother. Josh said “Yes Daddy, I will give my blood to Danny so that he can live”. The hospital then took a pint of Josh’s blood. When the procedure had finished, Josh looked solemnly at his father and said “Daddy, when do I die?” The little boy had misunderstood his father. He thought that by giving his blood to save his brother he would then die himself. But amazingly, he gave it anyway!

Every year, Christians celebrate Easter. It’s a time when we remember what happened to Jesus in the

last week of his life. How he was betrayed by Judas, arrested by the religious authorities and interrogated by Pontius Pilate. We recall that Jesus was whipped and made to carry a cross that he was then nailed to and left to die. Men who were crucified, generally remained alive for four days, however, Jesus had been so badly abused that he only lasted for six hours.

But just before Jesus died, he cried out “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” He did so, because at that moment he was taking upon himself the sin of humankind. And so, for the first time ever,

Jesus was cut off from his Heavenly Father. That is what sin does; it cuts us off from God. But by dying in our place, Jesus was taking the punishment that should have been ours and clearing the way for us to begin a relationship

Eight-year-old Josh gave his blood for his brother even though he thought that he would die in the process. However, Jesus actually did die for us. But the good news is that three days later, he came back to life! And so, at Easter, we are remembering that by dying in our place and by rising from the dead Jesus has proved that he really can offer us life after death.

If you think that this is worth celebrating, do join us on Easter Day at 10.30am, in the Community Centre.

Cricket Club BURY ST EDMUNDS

The Victory Sports Ground having seen a great deal of football over the last seven months will in early April change to accommodate Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club.

For 23 weeks the ground will host a vast amount of cricket, the club much appreciates the support of West Suffolk Council and Bury Town Council, both organisations can rightly highlight the significant amount of sport in the area.

From a cricket perspective there will be matches every Saturday on both grounds, the 1st team featuring in the Thurlow Nunn East Anglian Premier League, 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams in the Two Counties Cricket League. On Sundays two teams will compete in the Hunts Bats League.

Equally important will be women and girls cricket which is a major growth sport, the club has successfully built this section over the last two years. Find us at: The Victory Ground, Nowton Road, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP33 2BT

The theme is cricket for all ages and abilities, vital is the junior cricket with a cricket programme for All Stars (aged 5 to 8 years) and Dynamos ( 9 to 11 years) these younger players then move onto hardball cricket at under 13 and under 15 level, the club has very strong under 13 and under 15 teams who look to great success in 2025.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole… it’s that time of the year that us golfers have dreamt about, the clocks have changed and it’s THE MASTERS this month.

The Masters, it’s at this time of the year that I get excited for the golf season ahead. I always see The Masters as the start of the season and what better

way to do so than with a trip to Augusta National to watch the worlds best players play around what I think is one of the worlds best golf courses.

The biggest question is…. Who will put that green jacket on this year?

COACHES CORNER – FIRST TEE NERVES

Are you a person that gets a little nervous on the first tee or when you have an important shot to hit during a round?

I know I am; every competition I have first tee nerves. There are ways to deal with these and this month we will talk about how good planning and routine can help rid you of those nerves.

Pre-Shot Routine

The first and best way to help you focus on the shot in hand is to have a pre-shot routine. Having this process in your game will allow you to treat any shot within your round the same, so whether it’s a straight forward chip shot or a putt to win a competition your pre-shot routine will help to make sure there are no outside distractions that could hinder your performance.

Plan YOUR pre-shot routine

Everyone is different in what they like to do and think about before hitting each shot, below I have highlighted a few areas that might help you plan YOUR best pre-shot routine.

Thinking & Planning

In this stage you have to considering a lot of different things: - Lie

- Club Selection

- Externals Factors (wind direction etc…)

- If you’re going to miss where is best? - “Golf is a game of misses. He who misses best wins.” – Ben Hogan

- Type of shot - TARGET

Make a clear plan at this stage so that from this point on you are 100% committed to the shot you have planned.

Physical Rehearsals

In this stage it’s not just a case of making perfect practice swings. It’s all about getting a feel for the shot you are about to play and the type of movement you are going to need to produce to get the outcome you have planned.

SEE THE SHOT

During these rehearsals try and picture the shot in your minds eye. Make this image as detailed as possible, the more elements of the shot you can clearly see the better your rehearsals will be.

GO TIME!

You have planned the shot out and made your rehearsals so now its time to TRUST the plan and yourself.

Take a couple deep breaths in through your nose and slowly

Have a great month, enjoy the first major of the year and getting out on course and playing this great game. I will speak to you all next month.

exhale through your mouth or nose. This will ease the tension in your body getting you ready to perform.

If any negative thoughts creep in at this stage, start over. At this point you could introduce a trigger. This could be verbal like “Commit” depending on what works best for you.

From this point on be confident and align yourself to your target and make a committed swing knowing you have done all you can.
