Welcome to the February issue

It’s finally February. January can go on a bit can’t it? Especially with the sub-zero temperatures, but February feels like we’re edging closer to Spring at least!

February is also the month of love, with Valentine’s day on the 14th. If you’re thinking of entertaining at home, we have a deliciously simply dessert recipe on page 40 that’s perfect for a special meal and can be prepared in advance.

And Michelle at Crafty Foxes has a very sweet Valentine’s craft activity for the kids on page 48.

Also this month, ale and craft beer lovers won’t want to miss the Bury St Edmunds ‘Ale Trail’! Bury St Edmunds has a brewing history dating back 1,000 years when monks were brewing ale on the site of the Great Abbey. For more information, take a look at page 9 and start planning your trail with maps available online and at tourist information points.

Our cover features the brilliant Imogen Stubbs who is performing in an amazing production ‘The Children’ at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds from March 10th - 25th. More details opposite.

We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care and we’ll see you in March.

Problematic Potholes

It has been a challenging time with regards to highway management in recent weeks. I have been pushing officers at County to resolve the crumbling highway infrastructure quite aggressively and I hope to see improvements soon. Pretty much every town in the country has a similar issue, but we are working for improvement. Specifically to the areas I

represent, we do have a forward plan of works, however it is not sensible to undertake these when we have certain weather conditions unless it is a specific emergency. We can see this in various locations where channels have been dug for CityFibre - water can get in between the joins and when this ices over it can lift small potholes and

channel repairs. Given our recent sub-zero weather, it is prudent to wait for some of these repairs so they will not be immediately damaged. As we hit Spring, we should see action. In the meantime, I would encourage any resident to use the online tool to report any defects on the Suffolk County Council website.

Sad News Goodbye, FairMel...

It is with great regret that I report on a sad loss.

Our friend and colleague, Graham Newman was taken from us last month quite suddenly. Graham had been a cabinet member at Suffolk County for many years and chaired the council through Covid, being replaced by our own Robert Everitt last summer.

Graham was very helpful to me as a new councillor, especially regarding Highways and Education and he always had time to come to West Suffolk to aid us.

I must mark the work that our friend Melanie Lesser has done for our town as a great ambassador over several decades of hard work.

Many of you will know Melanie, especially from her work with Bury in Bloom and, recently, with the Abbey 1000 celebrations.

She is rightfully taking a step back and enjoying some rest and I hope you join me in wishing her well.

success story:

Eventus has completely transformed my mindset. Before coming to Eventus, I was really tired, and achy, and as a lady in her 50’s, very menopausal. I had breast cancer, I thought... I’m not going through another operation, let’s see if I can conquer this with fitness.

I’ve never lifted a weight in my life, but I’m lifting weights, I’m very proud of myself. You walk out of here thinking, I’ve really achieved something on a personal level.

I’ve lost 58cm, I feel younger and happier, the feeling is incredible, and seeing my family so proud of me.

The topic of ‘Emotional connection’ Part of the mental health and wellbeing advice series

Why is connection important?

As adults, the need for emotional connection plays a key role in staying well. The loss of an emotional connection following bereavement, for example, can prevent a person moving on and establishing new relationships. Often, when our need for emotional connection is unmet we can find ourselves trying to control feelings of loneliness through comfort eating or chasing the buzz of emotional intensity instead.

How do you look after your mental health and wellbeing?

That’s the basis for a new campaign for 2023 which focuses on 12 ‘emotional needs’ – one for each month – to bring you practical tips, people’s stories, and support to keep you well.

Be Well, Feel Well: A healthier Suffolk in 2023 is a partnership between Suffolk Mind, Public Health and Communities and a range of community groups teaming up to focus on ways for you to be well throughout the year. Look out for a new article every month with information for how you can keep healthy, get the help you need and even save money.

Top tips to stay connected

l Relationship skills, like rapport building, are the key to building new connections and enriching the relationships we already have.

l Being curious and showing an interest in others is important. This includes being ready to learn about someone new, what makes them tick and what is important to them.

l If you’d like to do more to support others who may need someone to talk to, consider volunteering.

The Befriending Network

At the Befriending Network we recognise the value of having someone to spend time with, to talk to about our experiences, share knowledge and stories, confide in or simply have a laugh together. This can all happen at the same time. Emotional connection is the essence of what we do.

The Befriending Network supports people over the age of 60 across West Suffolk who can benefit from companionship. Befriending gives people something to look forward to and a renewed sense of self-worth at a time in their life when many feel they have nothing new to contribute to society.

There are many aims of befriending, such as combatting isolation and promoting independence but fundamentally it is about the joy of social interaction and making new friends.

Where can I find out more?

thevoluntarynetwork.org/ befriending

ruralcoffeecaravan.org.uk

‘We get on like a house on fire and have so much in common. She is often one of the only people I see and it really brightens up my week. She brings cake and we chat.’ Our volunteers come from all backgrounds and age groups, and we support volunteers who have health conditions and are unable to work but still have a great deal to offer.

‘Being a befriender has made me feel a sense a purpose when I was at times feeling like I had none. I fully benefit from this just as much as the person I was matched with. I didn’t realise how much this could bring to my life and I now don’t see it as voluntary work, it’s truly a friendship.‘ As befrienders, we are not social workers or medics, but this can be an advantage. On the face of it we are informal and light touch. To us at the Befriending Network, it is about relationships and a feeling of community. ourspecialfriends.org

£20 (£5 non refundable deposit) – price held

We are organising a day trip to London, which is open to anyone who is interested in a fun and reasonably priced day out. The coach will leave from Home Farm Lane at 9.00am and will arrive on the Embankment at about 11.30am. You will be given free time in London and, to allow you to catch a matinee performance of a show if you would like to, we’ll be leaving London at about 7.00pm. The cost will be £15 per person – much cheaper than petrol and parking or train fares!

Our rates are very competitive. All monies raised are ploughed back into our local community as we are a registered charity, not a commercial profit maker. Contact Jackie for more details.

Christmas and the New Year celebrations may seem an age ago but as we quickly hurtle into 2023 it seems a great opportunity to reminisce on fantastic festive celebrations and activities.

If you have any questions or would like to book places please contact the Community Centre office on 01284 703705 or email office@southgatecommunity.org.uk

The office is open weekdays except Wednesdays.

Our picture montage on the right shows so much joy and happiness, light and colour to brighten dark December days as the Centre, and the wonderful fellowship that is Southgate Church staged some amazing events enjoyed by huge numbers from our local community. The month started with the ever popular Southgate’s Got Christmas, then followed the Light Trail and Christmas Fair. Environmental specialists Greener Growth then hosted three Wreath Making and Wooden Toy Workshops. There was fun on the dance floor at our first family disco, then it was off to the Macebearer for Carols in the Pub, again hosted by Southgate Church.

LITTER PICK

As a help to clean up the estate the Committee would like to hold a litter pick in March, as it is Mothering Sunday on the 18th March, is has been suggested that we aim for 25th March, if anyone is interested can let me know (contact email is: frankjwarby@yahoo.co.uk), we will provide equipment and arrange a meet up point. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Your Residents association

We meet bi-monthly in the Moreton Hall Community Centre at 7.30pm, we are looking for new members and your input would be very welcome; it is also a chance for you to meet and speak to your local councillors.

The next meeting is on Thursday 20th April.

SNOW DROPS

As the council workers were cutting trees in Home Covet just behind the coffee house they felled trees on top of a lovely patch of snow drops ruining the whole crop.

I have had several emails and phone calls complaining about this, having spoken to our councillors, sadly there is not much we can do about this now.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

We have had the report regarding the traffic in and around our estate, all indicators show that speeding is not an issue but there is still a problem with the volume of HGVs using Orttewell Road with concerns about the possibility of accidents or overturned vehicles.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the increased volume of HGVs using Bedingfield Way instead of the very expensive new road through Suffolk Park onto exit 43. There have been suggestions that there should be traffic signs advising HGV drivers to use the exit 43 investigations are still underway.

WARM ROOM

I would like to congratulate the Moreton Hall Community Centre for holding warm room sessions on Fridays, the timings are from 9am until 12 noon where you can drop in for a cuppa and a chat all are welcome, so do drop in and say hello.

Choir Hosts Successful Open Evening

Starting the new year off with a bang, St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir decided to host a special open evening, specifically for potential new members to come along, experience the choir and give singing a try. Many of the newcomers were friends of choir members or simply people that had seen our website or publicity material elsewhere.

A good number of visitors joined us and first of all had the pleasure of listening to the choir sing through the popular Robbie Wiliams song ‘Angels’. Our music director, Mark Jefferson, then broke down the

arrangement into its individual parts and carefully taught the newcomers how to sing it. This was done in a fun way, with lots of anecdotes and humor thrown in. By the end of the first half, everyone was able to join in and sing ‘Angels’ together as one. After a relaxing and sociable tea break, the choir sang through a varied selection of other songs, so that the visitors could begin to appreciate the breadth of our repertoire, and many joined in where they could. The evening was a considered a great success, especially as many of the newcomers expressed a wish to return and continue trialing the choir.

OUR PROMISE TO YOU, IF YOU WOULD ALSO LIKE TO TRY US OUT

Even when not hosting an open evening, we welcome anyone to a normal Thursday rehearsal, who feels they would like to give the choir a try. We can assure you of the following:

• You will be made most welcome and will be guided by an experienced singer

• You will not be asked to audition

• You will not be expected to read music (most of us can’t)

• You will be able to attend four rehearsals without obligation to join.

For further information, you can visit our website at www.semvc.com, or alternatively email / phone Nick Gane at semvcgane@hotmail.com or on 01284 700347

We meet for rehearsals every Thursday evening, 7.30pm at Howard Community Academy, Bury St Edmunds IP32 6SA.

This simple Italian dessert actually benefits from being made ahead.

INGREDIENTS

400ml double cream

250g mascarpone

75ml marsala

5 tbsp golden caster sugar

300ml coffee, made with 2 tbsp coffee granules and 300ml boiling water

175g sponge fingers

25g dark chocolate

2tsp cocoa powder

Sponsored by

1. Put the double cream, mascarpone, marsala and golden caster sugar in a large bowl.

2. Whisk until the cream and mascarpone have completely combined and have the consistency of thickly whipped cream.

Payroll Bureau –Now’s the Time

Have you thought about outsourcing your payroll? As we approach the new tax year, many owners are investigating ways to save time and concentrate on running and developing their businesses. Outsourcing the payroll can save money when compared to operating in-house and removes the need for the hardware, software and staff trained in their use. It also means the latest legisla tive changes are implemented.

For many companies, payroll is a concern for a limited time of the month. Outsourcing can cut costs and also reduce the chance of expensive errors.

Our experience shows that SMEs find compliance with constantly changing laws, rules and regulations is just too daunting a tas k. As an example, are you up-to-speed on the minefield that changes in holiday pay have created?

A modern-day payroll provider allows 24-hour access to payroll information. The employer has instant access to all payroll dat a at little or no extra cost through cloud-based payroll and individual employee log-ins.

It’s clear from the growing local demand that our Payroll Bureau is providing a specialist service that eases issues in many key business areas. To explore further please contact us at our office in Skyliner Way.

Fall in Love with Nature

January seemed endless with short, cold days and long, even colder nights. Despite the cold temperatures usually lingering throughout February, it also offers the promise of longer days and, if you look closely, early signs of nature starting to stir into action. These longer days make it easier to get outside to spot the signs of slow awakening from winter slumber, preparing for the spring ahead.

Wandering around the woods, it is possible to spot drifts of snowdrops carpeting the woodland floor, providing a stunning splash of colour.

According to ancient Moldovan legend, snowdrops were the result of a battle between Lady Spring and Winter Witch.

During the fight, Lady Spring cut her finger and the snow beneath it melted and created the delicate snowdrop. It became a sign that spring was beginning to win over winter.

With the leaves still absent from the trees, it is much easier to spot the birds which spend winter here with us. The weather might seem inclement, but nothing compared to the harsh winters of central Europe; Waxwings with their striking crests and black eyeliner can be spotted flying from hedgerow to hedgerow scavenging for winter berries.

As Valentine’s day approaches, love is in the air for our native species too. After a few days of bright weather, this kick starts frogs to think about spawning whilst other birds look for suitable nesting spots.

Getting out into the woods just for 10 minutes a day just makes us feel better. Switching off from the relentless pressures that technology can present and going out for a nature walk is better still. The long winter months can take a toll on all our mental health so perhaps this February - if the sun is out why not take a stroll and find the first signs of Spring in your local woods to look after your own mental health.

harnessing the power of nature

At The Green Light Trust, we harness the power of nature to support the most vulnerable, marginalised and those who society chooses to ignore. We work with people of all ages who are faced with multiple challenges in their lives; Individuals who have poor mental health or living with addiction, children and adults who have additional learning needs or for whom mainstream education does not quite work. The common thread in almost

all of their lives is that they have stalled for one reason or another. It’s usually only one incorrect decision or unfortunate event which creates this stall and the reality is, we are all one step away from being in their shoes. Moving on with their lives and getting on the road to recovery is about acceptance and belonging. At Green Light Trust, we take the time to support individuals using the healing power of nature as the catalyst in our stunning Suffolk woodlands.

WELCOME TO MY CRAFTY COLUMN!

Every month I share a crafty activity for you to try at home. Why not like my facebook page www.facebook.com/thecraftyfoxes and follow me on instagram @thecraftyfoxes to find out more about what I’m up to and see crafty videos to try at home.

YOU WILL NEED:

Pull off a small Babybel cheese size amount of clay

Work the clay until soft

Roll it out flat using a rolling pin or glass turned on its side, roll out on a ceramic tile or greaseproof paper so it doesn’t stick

Cut out a few heart shapes using a cutter or place paper and cut around the shape

Using the straw make a hole in the top of the heart

Leave to dry overnight ideally

Thread string through it to make gift tag

Paint inside the white heart to add interest.

TOP TIP… Try turning it into a key chain instead or thread some leather cord and make a necklace. You could even cut in half and make two holes so you can gift one to a friend.

Some white air drying clay, a rolling pin (or glass tumbler), heart shaped cutter (or heart shape cut out of paper and a sharp knife) a straw, string and some red or pink paint. www.thecraftyfoxes.co.uk

Not Long Now – Easter Weekend!

How quickly the seasons progress. Easter Sunday is only 10 weeks away (and yes, the eggs are in the shops! – told you so!!!). It’s still a little cold (minus 6) as we move into February.

Chairman Graham has motivated volunteers to rally into action, as the ‘job & project list’ develops. Experiencing rather chilly conditions, over 12 willing guy’s and gal’s spent Sunday (January 22nd) moving exhibit’s, cleaning, gardening, flag poling and more. Many hands make light work of these

jobs – can you please help? Any assistance on the forthcoming Sundays will be gratefully appreciated. Whether you have a particular skill or trade or just wish to muck-in a very friendly welcome awaits.

To add to our Sunday opening, this year access to the Museum

Echoes of the Past

will also be on Bank Holiday Monday’s. This will include Easter April 10th, May 1st & 29th, the King’s Coronation (May 8th) and August 28th. These additional dates are for a trial period this season and subject to volunteer availability. If successful we can continue in future years – but we still need some more helpers!

The Echoes of the Past event is planned for Sunday July 2nd. Arrangements are well underway to bring re-enactor’s, stalls, vehicles and much more. Please put the date in your diary’s.

memorabilia

We are always appealing for items of memorabilia (relevant to the USAAF & Airfield, the RAF and Bury St Edmunds) for display – either donated or loaned. Other items – aviation books, ‘Dinky’ cars and aircraft kits are always well received. The ‘for sale’ book-case has a great variety of aviation books, magazines, DVD’s available by donation. All contributions really help with our running costs.

So, our official countdown starts now 10, 9, 8… Easter Sunday 2023 which will soon be here, April 9th.

See you again next month in March 2023, here in The Directory.

We hope last months ideas helped reduce your food bill. As mentioned we will carry on with the same theme this month concentrating of things you can do before you leave the house.

Budget

Before you go shopping, look at your budget and ask “What can I afford?” Stick to your budget and avoid overspending. It’s easy to add £10 to your shop with impulse buys. Over a year this could add up to £500

Make a list

Make a list and stick to it. Large stores are a minefield for the unwary shopper. Supermarkets spend a fortune on marketing campaigns to lure you into spending more than you want or can afford.

Pre-plan meals

Pre-planning is a good way to shop efficiently, save money and free up precious leisure time.

‘Use By’ dates

Before making a list, check your cupboards and fridge to see if the ‘Use By’ date on any food has expired. If it has, it could be dangerous to eat, so throw it away and buy new. If the ‘Best Before’ date has expired don’t worry, that is only a manufacturer’s guideline.

Keep a list of food in your cupboards

What’s running out? Keep a list of foodstuffs noting what you run out of to save doubling up on ingredients. If you are in a rush, take a photo of your fridge or cupboard(s).

Jars and plastic containers

Only buy new containers of food when old ones are nearly empty. How many unused containers are in your cupboards or fridge? What a waste!

For every piece of food you waste you increase your CO₂e imprint. As it breaks down it gives out methane which is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases. As you can see saving food has many benefits to your pocket and the environment so please eat what you buy.

We will carry on with food next month looking at things you can do and watch out for when you are actually shopping.

Christ Church MORETON HALL

Dear Friends

We are facing a time of political upheaval and turbulence both in our own country and around the world. When that happens, it seems that things were much more serene and hopeful in the past. We forget that in the course of the 20th century this country faced two world wars, the Korean War, the Falklands War, the Malaya insurgency, a revolution in Africa and in the Middle East, not to mention the Suez crisis and the end of Empire and many other great changes.

It would appear that the 21st century is going to be much the same. The issue is not how we are going to survive or what are we going to do to get out of it, but rather how do we learn to cope with a life of change and difficulty?

The situation was much the same for the early Christians. Jesus Christ’s life began under Emperor Augustus and then continued under Emperor Tiberius, both of which were turbulent times. Not long after Jesus died the

Roman Empire suffered the convulsions of the tyrannous reign of Caligula and then shortly afterwards the reign of Nero. Then there was a civil war which lasted four years and involved the entire Roman world. The Christians had to get used to being persecuted for being Christians as well as all the political and economic upheaval of that time.

It was then that they began to realise the promises of Jesus could make all the difference. The first promise was that He would never leave them or forsake them. The second was that He would give them all the strength they needed. Thirdly, He would provide for them. In addition to all that He would forgive their sins, so they need not worry about their past. Finally, He gave them a glorious hope for the future – an eternal life with Him in heaven.

We are just entering the season of Lent with a special pancake service at Kids church at 4pm on Sunday 19th, then on Ash Wednesday 22nd Holy Communion at 7.30pm.

During the time of Lent Christians prepare themselves for the wonders of Easter when we remember the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We use these six weeks not just to give things up, but to renew our spirituality and draw closer to the One who loves us the most.

This is an opportunity for everybody to review their lives, to recognise the difficulties they are facing and to ask the One who can help them to come into their lives. If you do, He makes a big difference by giving you the strength, grace, peace and love you need to face these difficult times.

You could be one of them. Why not take this opportunity to join us at Christ Church on any Sunday morning to find out more?

With every good wish for the coming year

Again, thank you to those who contributed shoeboxes when we asked for them and gave large sums of money towards the Christingle appeal for homeless teenagers in the UK.

It was lovely to see so many members at our January meeting. We started the evening with a glass of prosecco to welcome in the New Year, before turning our attention to the proposed resolutions for 2022. Our votes were taken on the night for forward transmission to the Federation Office.

Unfortunately, our speaker let us down at short notice due to illness so our President gave us a short introduction

on ‘Philosophy for Children’ or P4C. The aim is to encourage children to question and think for themselves by engaging in debate on a variety of subjects. At a time when parents are often very busy, having time to discuss things with children in a light hearted way to help them to develop verbal reasoning skills is something that grandparents may be able to offer. There are no right or wrong answers to P4C

questions and every point of view is valid. It can be used with children as young as four by posing such questions as ‘Would Chocolate Rain be a Good or a Bad Thing?’ and expecting children to include ‘because’ in their answer. Older children can explore such topics as ‘What would you do if there was no internet?’ or ‘What is your most important possession and why?’ Once children are used to discussions, multi generation family discussions could include topics such as ‘What is the difference between adults and children?’ or ‘Can one person change the world?’

We are a friendly group and prospective members are always welcome.

The wedding present that changed two lives

About 30 years ago, a Christian prison visitor called Derek Watt, met a female prisoner called Margaret. She was friendly to him unless he started talking about Jesus.

Some years later, Margaret got married to a chap called Alan, and as wedding present Derek gave them a bible with a £20 note in it. Margaret thought: “I’ve got no use for the bible, but I can have a good night out on the £20”.

However, in time Margaret developed a curious urge to go to church. She ended up at an evening service in a small chapel where the preacher was talking about the amazing forgiveness of Jesus. Margaret was very moved and gave her life to Christ there and then! She wondered what Alan would say… But when she got home, she found him reading the bible that Derek had given them. Alan said:

“Does this book speak to you? Because it’s certainly speaking to me!” Although it was now very late, Alan rang the man who’d preached at the church Margaret had just visited and said “I think I need to come and see you. Right now!” That night, Alan also became a Christian.

I was a bit like Margaret and Alan. For the first 26 years of my life, I was completely uninterested in God-stuff. But one day, out of the blue, a friend promised me a free curry if I went to church with her. I went simply to claim my free madras, but the experience shocked me, because it wasn’t what

I was expecting. The building was warm and so were the people. The sermon was so thought provoking that I was still awake at the end of it. I left that service with questions that needed answers…

I took my questions to an Alpha. Alpha is a series of 8 evenings that gives you the chance to think and talk about the Christian faith. It begins with a relaxing meal, which is followed by a stimulating video talk on an aspect of faith, after which we have a discussion. Over 2 million people in this country have now done an Alpha, and you could too.

Our next Alpha begins on Monday 13th February, at 7pm. If you’d like more details, please give me a ring me on 07710 189402 or email me at

ST VALENTINE’S DAY

Originated as a church holiday to honour martyrs of the Christian faith. It is believed that the first valentine note was sent by a (you’ve got it) Valentine who was in prison to a girl he loved. While the meaning has changed, it remains a special day to shower with love those we hold close.

Whether you are in a relationship or not, God gives us unconditional and indescribable love. No matter your age or stage in life, Valentine’s Day can be celebrated because of God’s great love for us all.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole, January has been a very cold start to the new year. However, the first month of the year is done and we are one step closer to spring. That being said we still have plenty of time to action our goals and plans for our golf in 2023.

If you have set some goals for your game this year the one piece of advice I would give you is make it achievable. You can always reset if and when you achieve your goals.

COACHES CORNER – READY... STEADY…GO!!

This month we are looking at trigger movements and how they can help you commit to hitting better golf shots on the golf course. These small movements or feelings can help you make a more committed and have smoother movements. They can also help if you find yourself stood over the ball for a long Ame, these will allow you to pull the trigger and hit the shot far sooner.

Look at the image of the golfer holding a bucket in this section, if this bucket was full of water some of us would struggle to move this into a back swing position. However, with a small trigger movement forward this motion becomes easier and we would be able to move the bucket further and smoother.

This can be the same in your golf game, from putting to full swings a small movement or feeling that allows you to get your swing motion started a lot smoother.

This could be a push of the hands, a bounce or movement of the club head whatever works for you to get your golf swing moving at the same point in your routine.

Here are two examples from the worlds best players

If you would like more information on this topic or any other area of your game, then please feel free to contact me.

I hope this section will help to improve your game, but if you are still struggling with this or any area of your golf game, why not contact me for further assistance?
