Welcome to the March issue
Spring has finally sprung! This month, as we prepare to wind the clocks forward on 30th March (yes, an extra hour of daylight – hooray!), we’re embracing all things bright, blooming, and beautiful.
With Pancake Day on 4th March, we’re keeping things deliciously simple with our one-cup pancake recipe on page 42 – easy enough for even the most amateur of flippers! No need for weighing scales or complicated measurements, just grab a mug, mix, and you’re on your way to pancake perfection.
And let’s not forget Mother’s Day on Sunday 30th March – a time to celebrate the wonderful women in our lives. Whether you’re planning a luxurious afternoon tea (we’ve rounded up some of the best spots in Bury St Edmunds) see page 6. Or if you’re looking for a thoughtful but budget-friendly gift, we’ve got you covered with eight heartfelt ideas on page 18 that show love doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag.
We hope you enjoy this issue with lots of info from local businesses, plus all the usual news and events. Take care, and we’ll see you in April!

SESCA’s 2025 Season Preview

The St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association’s 2025 season starts on Saturday, 29 March at Lackford Lake, 5 miles NW of Bury St Edmunds.
A comprehensive programme of dinghy sailing and paddling events is scheduled, with on the water activities running through to November. Dinghy racing is organised on Sundays with social sailing, kayaking and paddleboarding taking place at any time, so long as two adult members are on site.
The club runs RYA adult and junior dinghy sailing courses and paddle sports training sessions for members throughout the season. The club owns a large fleet
of training dinghies (eg Wanderers; Gull; Lasers/ ILCAs; Picos; Toppers and Optimists), kayaks and paddleboards (SUPs), which are also available for hire. It is a great feature of the club that you do not need your own equipment to be able to sail or paddle.
SESCA hosts a number of group members including the Bury St Edmunds Sea Cadets; Newmarket and Mildenhall Sea Cadets; Young People Afloat (a sailing youth club); Suffolk Scouts; Priory School and WASH Sailability. The latter group caters for individuals with a variety of special needs, as well as people with a wide range of physical disabilities.
The highlight of the season's programme is the club's '12th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta', which will be held on Sunday, 22 June. This is a fun event, which celebrates 'Antigua Sailing Week' in the Caribbean. The Regatta is again being generously supported by the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority.
The club prides itself on its low membership fees and being affordable to all. (cadet £25 pa; adult £62 pa and family £90 pa)
Anyone interested in joining the club is invited to look at the club’s website www.westsuffolksailing.org.uk or contact the club secretary at sesca.admin@gmail.com for further information.

8 Thoughtful Mother’s Day Ideas
That Won’t Break the Bank

Prepare a homemade breakfast.
Mother’s Day is all about showing appreciation for the wonderful women in our lives – but that doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune to make it special. In fact, some of the most meaningful gestures cost little to nothing and come straight from the heart. Here are some thoughtful and affordable ideas to make her day unforgettable.
HOMEMADE BREAKFAST
Start her day off right with a homemade breakfast. Whether it’s classic tea and toast or a more indulgent spread of pancakes and fruit, she’ll love the effort you put in. Bonus points for adding a handwritten note or a fresh flower from the garden.
1 2 3 4
CREATE A DIY SPA EXPERIENCE
Transform your home into a relaxing sanctuary with candles, soft music, and DIY treatments. Give her a soothing hand massage, or make a homemade face mask using simple kitchen ingredients like honey and oats.
GO FOR A SCENIC WALK
Take advantage of the beautiful countryside, parks, or coastal paths and enjoy a leisurely walk together. Fresh air, good company, and perhaps a flask of tea or coffee make for the perfect bonding experience.
HOST A MOVIE NIGHT AT HOME
Set up a cosy cinema experience with her favourite films, comfy blankets, and some homemade popcorn. Whether she loves a classic rom-com, an action-packed thriller, or a nostalgic favourite, this is a perfect way to relax together.
COOK A SPECIAL MEAL
Instead of an expensive restaurant trip, prepare a home-cooked meal with her favourite dishes. Set the table nicely, light some candles, and make it feel like a restaurant experience – but with the warmth of home.
PLAN A GARDEN PICNIC
If the weather allows, set up a charming picnic in the garden or somewhere like the Abbey Gardens with homemade treats, a comfy blanket, and her favourite drinks. It’s a lovely way to enjoy nature and each other’s company.
DO AN AT-HOME AFTERNOON TEA
Whilst there are some wonderful places in Bury St Edmunds to enjoy an afternoon tea, you can also recreate the experience at home. Serve up sandwiches, scones, and cakes alongside a pot of tea, all beautifully presented on a tray or cake stand.
Mother’s Day isn’t about how much money you spend, but about the love and thoughtfulness you put into the day.
Whatever you choose to do, she’ll appreciate the effort and cherish the time spent together. After all, the best things in life are free – just like a warm hug and a heartfelt ‘I love you’! 5 6 7 8
LEARN SOMETHING NEW TOGETHER
Whether it’s a craft, a new recipe, or a simple DIY project, spend time learning something together. It’s a fun bonding experience and creates a lasting memory.

Plan a garden picnic.

Valentine’s Day Dance 2025
The red and white drapes provided a rosy glow to the main hall, suspended hearts added to the romantic ambience, flickering scented candles created a most special aura – once again the Southgate Community Centre hosted a most memorable Valentine’s Day event on February 14th.

So, what a special night it was with the return of Andy Reeves and ten fabulous musicians entertaining hugely appreciative

at 7pm Friday 14th March Easter Chocolatey Bingo Friday 11th April guests at our Valentine’s Dance. Hopefully they will be back again next year. For details of the band email: marrakeshband@gmail.com

Moreton Hall WI
The WI was a founding member of the Climate Coalition who promote February as the month to ‘Show The Love’ for our environment, which is why our February speaker traditionally has a ‘green theme’.
This month we welcomed Edward Gildea who recounted how his life changed when he took part in both the 2014 and 2018 Clipper Around the World Yacht Races. Sailing 40,000 miles across the oceans from Australia back to London and then from Uruguay to Australia gave him a powerful connection to the planet. He recounted some of his experiences during the Races and spoke about his increased awareness of the destructive forces of nature and the power of the oceans. His description of being drenched by hot sea water during a cyclone highlighted one of the many moments when he became intimately aware of the effect of climate change. These powerful experiences, coupled with the birth of two of his grandsons while at sea, turned him into a committed green activist, determined to do all he can to protect the world for future generations.
Edward’s talk was informative and wellillustrated with slides taken during his travels and showing some of his activities as an activist. It was not an easy listen as we considered climate change and how little is being done to protect our environment for future generations but the ‘take home’ message was very much that every action is a positive contribution towards a better future.
Moreton Hall WI meet at the Moreton Hall Community Centre on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. Visitors are always welcome. For more information contact Alison on 07557 005343 or Gwen on 07768 175235.

Spring is here –time to embrace new challenges in 2025!
As the days grow longer and brighter, My WiSH Charity is gearing up for an exciting year of events, supporting fundraisers as they take on incredible challenges.
This month, 14 dedicated fundraisers, including West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust staff, will run the Cambridge Half Marathon, all in the name of charity. Each has their own reason for running, but they all share the same goal: raising funds to make a difference for those receiving care at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.
Feeling inspired?
This could be you!
We have plenty of events lined up throughout the year. Whether 2025 is the year you finally take the leap – literally - with that skydive you’ve always wanted to do, or you use one of our fundraising challenges to kickstart your Couch to 5K journey, we’ve got the perfect event for you. Head to www.mywishcharity.co.uk to see all our events for 2025.
And if none of those take your fancy, don’t let that
stop you! Many of our amazing supporters raise funds through quiz nights, afternoon teas, and other events that are a little more relaxed than jumping out of a plane! Get in touch with the charity team, and we’ll help you plan an event that suits you. One of the best things about supporting My WiSH Charity is that you can see exactly where your money goes - and you can choose which area to support.

Just like Fred Power who, last year, took on a 100-hole golf challenge to raise £479 to thank the maternity bereavement suite at the West Suffolk Hospital. This money has been used to help us continue to support families with memory boxes. Each box costs around £50 and has everything in it to ensure special moments are captured to treasure. Fred is continuing this challenge and more for 2025 so we can’t wait to support him along the way.
Jenny Day’s dad had support for many years from the neuromuscular department. When he sadly passed away, Jenny fundraised and raised over £4000 allowing us to buy a specialist exercise bike called a Motomed for patients to use.

Would you like to make a difference like Fred and Jenny?
We’d love to hear from you. Email fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk or call 01284 712952 for a chat.

Hardwick have had an exceptionally busy and successful half term of sport competitions since January.
To start the term off, a really talented group of year five and six children came runners up in a Futsal tournament, with our amazing goalie being named player of the whole tournament. Following this was a year four Dodgeball competition, the children put in all their break times towards this event and had a great time participating.
After this, we had a Tchoukball event, in which the team won both their games (although this was a development event only). The swimming gala came next, from which the swimming squad put in a fantastic effort!
A team of Year 5 and 6 players then took part in the Bury St Edmunds School Games U11 Table Tennis Tournament
What’s been happening at… HARDWICK Primary School
By Zara Cowling, Head of School & Andy Abbott, Governor

staged at King Edward School and organised by the BSE Table Tennis Club. There was a fantastic standard of play, the team played non stop for two hours having given all of their lunch times for two weeks to train! and after some brilliant games Hardwick were crowned winners, and with sports lead Miss Weller-Poley, proudly received the trophy, an achievement to be proud of! Finally Hardwick Primary School
Football Club is very grateful to sponsor T K King Roofing (Suffolk) Ltd who has kindly provided the whole club with new shirts, shorts and socks for every player. The coaches and children are hugely grateful to Paul King who is sponsoring not just one kit but every player, some 50 footballers from Reception age to Year 6. They are looking forward to showcasing the new kit in all forthcoming matches.

So what is Lipoedema?
The West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service also treats patients with Lipoedema.
It’s a chronic and progressive disorder that can occur at any age and affects the adipose tissue, over 300 million women worldwide have this painful condition. Because of increased fat under the skin, legs can appear pale and feel cold when compared with the rest of the body. Skin feels fatty or doughy and is often tender and bruises easily. Feet and hands are not affected, although the arms can be occasionally. Lipoedema is often very painful – women with the condition often complain of aching in the
affected limbs and pain in the knees. Some features of Lipoedema are:
• Weight is gained disproportionately on hips and thighs and below knee, this usually affects both sides and is symmetrical
• Legs are sensitive to touch with deep throbbing pain in legs and pain in knee joints
• Legs feel heavy and swell throughout the day (especially after long periods of standing or sitting) but resolve overnight.
• Fat on legs looks dimpled like “orange peel“ and legs may feel cold to the touch. Lipoedema ‘fat’ does NOT respond to dieting and it is very dispiriting for those with Lipoedema to be advised it is ‘just a weight issue’ and to diet.
If you think you may be suffering from Lipoedema then visit your GP to ask for a referral to the West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service.

LATEST NEWS

A big thank you to all those who attended the MHRA Moreton Hall Residents Association meeting on Monday 10th February 2025, with over 32 attendees there including committee, residents and councillors. A lot of areas discussed and projects to be dealt with on the estate.
Parking
We would like to raise the awareness that there has been a number of issues raised about parking in and around the estate, including residents areas and around schools. Please be mindful when parking that Emergency Vehicles can access/ egress the route. If you can have consideration for other residents within the area and ensure you do not block driveways, pathways and try not to park on grass verges as these are being churned up. The Waste Collection and Delivery Vehicles are also having problems accessing routes, we all want our bins emptied.
‘Love where you Live’
NEW Litter picking event arranged for Sunday 16th March 11am- 2pm (approx) meet at Moreton Hall Community Centre (outside front of). Please wear hi-vis vest and gloves if you have, some equipment will be supplied. Further details on the Moreton Hall website page to sign up, we hope to do this on a regular basis.
Myself and Andy McGowan met with MP Peter Prinsley and other Moreton Hall Councillors at the end of January 2025 to raise some of the issues around infrastructure on the estate, we will be having regular updates, meetings with the team.
Rock Snake
This is moving forward and a big ‘Thank you to Clairie Clements’ who is revamping and making the rocks superb, they have really come to life again. We want to get this memory of what the children and adults achieved during this tough time into the rock snake asap. Watch this space.
Moreton Hall Survey
This will be available shortly, both on the website, various points available to pick up through the estate and facebook. Any questions please email Andy - mhravicechair@gmail.com who will be collecting and collating the data.
Next
meeting 28th April 2025 – 7.30pm.
As chairman, I am happy to raise any points from residents raised at the meetings and with local councilllors. But you can also direct any questions you may have to your local councillors:

One-cup Pancakes with blueberries
Ingredients:
1 large free-range egg
1 cup of self-raising flour
1 cup of milk
sea salt
optional:
200 g blueberries
olive oil
4 tablespoons natural yoghurt

Because pancakes are not just for pancake day!
Method:
To make the batter, crack the egg into a large mixing bowl.
Add the flour, milk and a tiny pinch of sea salt.
Whisk everything together until you have a lovely, smooth batter.
Fold through the blueberries, if using.
Put a large frying pan on a medium heat and after a minute or so, add ½ tablespoon of oil.
Carefully tilt the pan to spread the oil out evenly.
Add a few ladles of batter to the pan, leaving enough space between each one so they have room to spread out slightly – each ladleful will make one pancake, and you’ll need to cook them in batches.
Cook the pancakes for 1 to 2 minutes, or until little bubbles appear on the surface and the bases are golden, then use a fish slice to carefully flip them over. When the pancakes are golden on both sides, use a fish slice to transfer the pancakes to a plate.
Repeat steps 5 to 9 with the remaining batter, adding ½ tablespoon of oil to the pan between batches, if needed.
Serve the pancakes straight away, topped with a dollop of natural yoghurt, and some extra berries, if you like.
Tip: These are the easiest pancakes to make – you don’t even need scales to weigh your ingredients. All you need is a cup or a mug. As long as you use the same cup for measuring both the flour and the milk, you’ll be laughing!

This months’ craft celebrates Mothers day, spring on the horizon and all things floral. Perfect to gift to a special mum or grandma.
You will need… thin plastic food bag, white paper, paint (pink, green and yellow) a paint brush, paper cup and a hot Glue Gun
Turn the bag inside out
Tie a knot in the bottom of the bag
Turn the right way round
Paint the bottom of the bag with a paint brush
Press down gently on the sheet of paper to create flowers
Cut the cup in half along the join line and across the bottom
Place the cup at the base of the paper and draw a light pencil line where the top is.
Paint green stems from the flowers down to the pencil line to look as id they are coming from the paper vase
Using fingers blob a dot of yellow paint inside each flower
Glue gun the paper cup half in place
Decorate the cup with hearts and lines.
TOP TIP…
Try different coloured paints to create different flowers. Maybe use a canvas too instead of paper so it can be propped up on a mantelpiece to be admired. C

Do you ever question the logic of government decisions? So often there is a yin and yang to the policies. House building is one of those policies that seems so paradoxical. Yes, of course we need more homes but at what cost, and is there an alternative? The cost comes in several forms, but in this article we will concentrate on the carbon footprint of building 1,500,000 homes relative to our annual, national output of greenhouse gases.
The government is driving towards nett zero carbon emissions via decarbonisation and yet the huge CO₂e of building 1.5 million homes flies in the face of the whole concept.
Here are the numbers
The average carbon footprint to build a home in UK is around 65 tonnes CO₂e, that covers materials, transport and building the property. Numbers will vary depending on the size of the building, the materials used and where it is located, but 65 tonnes gives a reasonable average. This is an upfront environmental cost that does not include running a home in the future.
If we now multiply 65 tonnes by 1,500,000 = 97,500,000 tonnes CO₂e over 5 years to build all the proposed homes. The total CO₂e for Britain over 5 years is around 1,925 million tonnes based on figures taken from 2023, this means an increase of 5% on our current CO₂e footprint just from building the new properties. Not a great example to the rest of the world for a nation that wants to lead the way on decarbonisation.

So what are the alternatives
Here are a few ideas – there are currently 265,000 homes that have sat empty for more than 2 years in Britain. Surely there could be a way to utilise these properties with rent to the owners. Of course, many of these homes will not be in areas with high work prospects, but many people now work from home so there may be some lost opportunities here.
The move to working from home has left countless office blocks empty around UK, some of these could be converted to houses and apartments. This will still have a carbon footprint for the conversion work but it will most likely be much lower than new builds and also reduces the need for land grab.

A third possibility is building pod type homes with a small carbon footprint and small land area requirement, this could also include using old containers which make fantastic building blocks for modular construction.

Of course we all understand that major building companies will not like these alternatives to new builds but with increasing speed of climate breakdown, unconventional housing ideas will become a necessity.
Please let me know if you have any other thoughts on this subject.

Ivory Towers

Written by Samantha Reid, A member of Christ Church

Do you often see someone and wonder what their life is like? I chatted with someone recently, who often goes out of their way to talk to people; in a café or in the street, so that they have someone to have a conversation with. I am not saying this is wrong, in fact I am probably guilty of presuming people want to talk if they are on their own; and yet we forget that many people can have good reason to sit in silence.
Jesus made a point of doing exactly this for 40 days and nights; and today, many people use this time (Lent) to give something up and see if they can cope without it.
We know that loneliness has a massive impact on life expectancy, but perhaps when we choose to go out of our way to be quiet or not
be part of our community, it can also benefit those leading busy lives. I wonder what your thoughts are, and if you make time to just ‘be’? As I am a natural seeker of being with people, I do struggle to be on my own, however, I have taken great pleasure (along with frustration) of completing a puzzle. It is 1000 pieces, and an aerial view of Bury St Edmunds, so you might wonder why it has taken over a year to do. Partly because I can’t sit still for long and partly because of my patience in finding the right pieces. The good news is I’m nearly there. When I do sit and do two or three pieces it gives me great pleasure, but I do have to make myself do it.
I am not asking people to turn their backs on people who are lonely but they may be trying to just be still, be quiet,
and just enjoy what is around them as well as how amazing they are.
Yes, you can think this because just being able to see, hear, get out of bed on your own and be independent are amazing things to be able to do.
We often forget this until our freedom is taken away, or our health prevents us from choosing what we want to do. Let’s not sit in our Ivory towers, and judge others who choose a different path to follow. Let us be observant and enjoying the simple things in life.
I think the opportunity Lent gives us to take something out of our lives, allows greater understanding and appreciation of what we already have.

March Update…
The countdown continues. We look forward to our Opening Day on March 30th, 2025. So just 5 (YES 5) weeks till our season begins. (And please don’t forget the CAKE!).
Are we going to exceed last year’s figures?
Over 4,000 visitors was exceptional – 4,574. This included 35 individual visits from 94th and 322nd veteran’s families. Fantastic figures for any small museum, a very BIG thank you to all that have visited.
A full list of our event dates will be in next month’s edition – ‘Echoes of the Past’ etc.
Maintenance work has continued over the winter closed season, with plenty of projects going on. When you all return there will be more to see, read and study.

If you are interested in helping us please speak to Chairman Graham (email as below) or catch him on any Sunday. ALL assistance is very welcome, volunteers are the blood of our
existence. Without their time, enthusiasm, dedication (and laughter) we would not be here. Please come and join us. Membership is also available, again a great way of supporting us financially.

We re-open on Sunday 30th March 2025. 10.00 - 16.00. Please join us.
So, thank you for your continuing support, the committee and volunteers really appreciate your visits, especially when you join us for tea, coffee and cake. (YES, remember the Cake!!)
See you again next month in April, here in The Directory.

YOUR LOCAL CHURCH IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE
In 2013, one of Italy’s best known football teams, AC Milan, were not having a good season. They’d endured a long run of matches without a win and so their supporters had grown increasingly frustrated. At the end of their 5th home defeat, a large group of supporters surrounded the VIP car park and prevented the players from leaving. But at 11:00 PM, Milan’s star midfielder, Kaka, went out to speak to them.
He listened to their grievances and spoke calmly to them. An hour later, the previously angry crowd applauded him and dispersed peacefully. The next day, the Italian press called him “St Kaka”.
At the time, Kaka was one of the best-known Christians in Italian sport. A man who openly said that his favourite book is the Bible; a player who had ‘God is faithful’ stitched into his football boots; a man who gave
St Kaka

away at least £15,000 every week. A person whose life had been changed by meeting Jesus personally.
Kaka is a modern-day example of a Christian seeking to live differently to those around him. St Paul would also have applauded him. For in the bible, he challenges Christians not to conform to the ‘pattern of this world’. In other words, to live differently to those around them. Instead, Paul says, ‘live to please God’ and let God’s Spirit transform you so that you begin to think and behave like him.
In a sense that is what we recognise in Kaka’s
behaviour. His heart and mind had clearly been changed by God’s Spirit and so in that moment, he sought to be a peacemaker. Even though this meant taking a risk and putting himself in danger.
I believe that when we take a risk and step out in faith, to do or say what pleases God, it’s then that we see God’s faithfulness to us. It’s then that we experience his power, giving us the wisdom, words and courage that we naturally lack.
When you become a Christian, God’s Spirit becomes real within you, bringing you alive to God; enabling you to see him in everything you do. But the good news is, that when we desire to please God, he is always willing to help us. All that we have to do is to pray. And then his Spirit gives us the ability and the strength to do the right thing.

A Tryal of Witches

A Theatre
Royal Bury St Edmunds own production written by Tallulah Brown.

East Anglia, 1645, a hot and stifling Summer. The air is thick with paranoia and superstition. Matthew Hopkins, the self-appointed Witchfinder General travels from village to village telling all who will listen about the power of the devil and the prevalence of witches.
The play asks what led to one of the most shocking witch trials in British history. The trial in Bury St Edmunds was the first time women were convicted using ‘spectral evidence’ –the belief that witches could be in two places at one time.

THE 19TH HOLE
BY ADAM TRETT, PGA PROFESSIONAL GOLF COACH
Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching
Welcome back to the 19th hole.
February saw some very cold spells but also some lovely days where I hope you all got out to play some golf under some lovely blue skies.
It’s these days and some other smalls signs that gives the feeling that maybe just maybe the spring might be starting to appear.
With that in mind this month we have the clock change to look forward to and that will lead us perfectly into the start of the golfing season, The Masters in early April.
So if you haven’t been playing or practicing much over the last few months now is the time to dust the clubs down and get in some hard work before the season kicks off.
COACHES CORNER – STRIKE STRIKE STRIKE
Strike is the most important thing about any golf shot you hit, without good contact between the face of any club and the golf ball it will be very hard for you to be able to control the result of that shot.

This month I am going to highlight one area that I see a lot when coaching, clients in the short game. We are looking at topped or thinned chip and pitch shots, this shot will often happen just at the wrong time in your round of golf and will strike fear into other shot of this length or type for the rest of the round.
So the most common problem seen from clients hitting this type of shot is the arms moving up and towards the body through the impact area (elbows parting) and the right hand (for a right handed golfer) taking control of shot, this action makes controlling the low point very hard and often leads to striking the ball on or above the equator of the ball seeing it run across the green.
The drill below will allow you to practice better technique and achieve a more control and consistent strike on these short game shorts. Building confidence in the area of your game is essential to playing good golf.
Tie Drill
- This is a low cost drill that will allow you to say goodbye to those confidence killing thin chip shots for good.

As you can see from the images, you will need to set up to the chip shot as you normally would do. Then with the tie made longer you hold the tie under the left hand on the grip of the golf club.
The tie needs to be pulled torte at the address position, from here you will need to complete the back swing and follow through with the tie keeping the tension.
I hope this section will help to improve your game, but if you are still struggling with this or any area of your golf game why not contact me for further assistance.
If you can complete this then your arms wont have lost structure and should allow the wrists to be less involved throughout the shots.
Over time and with practice this movement will become more natural and you will learn to trust this even under the greatest pressure. You can also extend this practice into your full swing movements and allow you to build better strikes with all clubs.
