MOONAH SOUNDS OF THE WORLD FRIDAY 13 MAY - SATURDAY 25 JUNE (SEE PROGRAM FOR INDIVIDUAL DATES)

A concert series celebrating the rich diversity of culture, music and dance in Tasmania, featuring members of our local multicultural communities.

In response to the COVID-related cancellation of the 2022 Moonah Taste of the World, we present five evenings to showcase the incredible talent of more than 17 different acts from our community. Join us at MAC and be transported around the world to celebrate music and dance.

Selecta DJ Girlzila will be spinning some global beats at all shows.

MOONAH SOUNDS OF THE WORLD PROGRAM Central Asia - 7.30pm Friday 13 May Featuring: Artha — Nepalese folk and contemporary music | Teahouse — Interweaving of both Western and Eastern scales | Marzi — Traditional Persian Dance Ilyas Hussain — Traditional Sitar of the North-West of Pakistan

Euro - 8pm Saturday 4 June Featuring: Xenos — The beautiful and powerful dance music of the Balkans Lastovke — Traditional and new folk songs from both Slovenia and Tasmania contrasted and presented bilingually | Oberek — Traditional Polish Dance

Afrika - 7.30pm Saturday 11 June Featuring: King B-Fine and the Afrikaya Band — Reggae and afro beat Mambo Afro Trio — Marrying the music of Malawi and South Africa: Kwela, Mbube and Mbaqanga with Flamenco, Samba and High Life | Fabio Chivhanda — Original mbira music from Zimbabwe

Latin Fiesta - 8pm Saturday 18 June Featuring: Xixa — An eight-piece lively Cumbia band | Yacuruna — Mellow boleros to the dance beats of Cumbias | Maira Rodriguez — A mix of Colombian folkloric dances and storytelling

Pacifika - 8pm Saturday 25 June Featuring: Boil Up — A ten-piece band celebrating the coming together of different cultures into one family | Karai — Singer-songwriter and guitarist Tongan Tauolunga — Traditional Tongan Dance

Selecta DJ Girlzila will be spinning some Global Beats at all shows.

EBB AND FLOW When: Friday 13 May — Saturday 4 June Who: Catherine Stringer | Where: Exhibition Space Launch: Thursday 12 May at 6pm This exhibition explores the ebb and flow of the sea and of life through the medium of seaweed, alluding to themes of movement, transience, change and transformation. It is also a celebration of the beauty and creative potential of seaweed.

Ebb and Flow will present wall-based and sculptural seaweed paper artworks, and paintings.

EMBODIED When: Friday 13 May — Saturday 4 June Who: Christl Berg | Where: Project Space Launch: Thursday 12 May at 6pm For this exhibition I reflect on living in a body, dwelling on earth. Using a combination of photographs, drawings and words I play with this contemplation and invite you, the visitor, to engage and, if you like, contribute.

BRIDAL SEDAN CHAIR When: Friday 10 June — Saturday 2 July Who: Adelphie He | Where: MAC Foyer Launch: Thursday 9 June at 6pm Bridal Sedan Chair is a commemorative installation for people who fight for gender equality and seek justice for genderbased discrimination. A bridal sedan chair is a traditional type of transportation, particularly used in traditional Chinese wedding ceremonies. This interactive artwork, and the invitation for any woman-identifying person (or anyone at all) to sit in it, has been created to challenge the traditional symbolism of this object.

MAWSON When: Friday 10 June — Saturday 2 July Who: Martin Walch | Where: Exhibition Space Launch: Thursday 9 June at 6pm MAWSON is an exhibition of photographic and screen-based artworks that explore the distortions of space and time experienced by those living and working at Mawson Station during an Antarctic summer. The works emerge from a threemonth residency spent at Mawson during the austral summer of 2017/18, as a result of being awarded the Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship.

This exhibition is proudly supported by The Australian Antarctic Division through its Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship of 2017/18 (AAD); The Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT); and The University of Tasmania.

LOOKING THROUGH ROSE-COLOURED GLASSES When: Friday 10 June — Saturday 2 July Who: Yumemi Hiraki and Corinna Howell Where: Project Space Launch: Thursday 9 June at 6pm looking through rose-coloured glasses is a collaborative and interactive exhibition by Yumemi Hiraki and Corinna Howell.

Building on their past collaborations, this exhibition explores their Japanese ties and how their individual narratives merge and interact to help them accept their fleeting memories of loved ones and reconcile with loss.

WORD! — 8pm Friday 10 June Featuring: Rob Braslin | Chloe Black | Stray | Grace Chia Young Dawkins | Roaming Trees | Touch Wood Tales A variety night showcasing some of Tasmania’s finest performers and wordsmiths.
