Arts Centre

Welcome to Moonah Arts Centre

Welcome to the Moonah Arts Centre April, May and June Program! I am very pleased to introduce another vibrant season full of events, exhibitions and workshops for people of all ages to enjoy.

As usual, I am particularly excited about the Glenorchy Youth Open, our annual youth art exhibition inviting young people to share their unique and unfiltered perspectives through any medium they choose. All entries received are accepted and professionally curated and hung throughout the gallery. Plus, all artists go into the draw to win a $100 voucher for adArt Art Supplies to encourage further creative exploration.

In this program, we introduce the five emerging Young Artists selected to have their own solo exhibition at MAC in 2024. Each artist is guided by our expert staff to prepare and present an exhibition with curatorial guidance, professional handling and installation of artworks, promotion and documentation of the exhibition. I’m very proud Glenorchy City Council are supporting the next generation of artists by offering such a valuable experience.

In May, we are thrilled to present the Mosaic Festival of Arts 2024, a wide-ranging, four-week program of performances, presentations and workshops delivered by Mosaic Support Services, Second Echo Ensemble and special guests. This festival provides a platform for local artists living with disabilities to share their ideas, experiences and prolific creative output.

Finally, we invite you to join us for Out of the Closet Comedy, a stand-up comedy event that celebrates transgender representation in honour of Pride Month. Laughter has the power to unite us, and we are proud to support this inclusive and joyful night of diversity.

I hope to see you at the MAC!

With kindness

pretty drowning

Scarlett Tope

pretty drowning explores feminism, misogyny and body issues through the female figure. Using strange colours and surrealist-like techniques to push societal norms, this collection of work focuses on the parts of the body usually found unattractive such as scars, stretch marks and body hair.

Together Forever Woolf Wattern

This collection of drawings is based on the exploration of the shadow. Losing myself in the flow of the pen the shadow draws itself, it’s not something I really think about, I just feel it.

Together Forever includes drawings created over the last couple of years. I was curious of what it would be like to reveal these personal drawings in a public setting and what curiosities and conversations they would evoke about my inner world.

La Famille

Amelie Moschberger

La Famille is a celebration of the individuality, inspiration and love found among my loved ones. It focuses on my family and friends — their interests and what reminds me of them. It is an ode to them, a reminder of how special each one of them is to me.

ScribblaMETRA

Grace Chia

Welcome to the wonderful world of ScribblaMETRA — a world born out of the balance of chaos and order.

“Scribbla” harnesses the power of freedom with line and pen, the unusual and instinctive flow that comes with art. “METRA” is derived from the word “Metric” and incapsulates the ordered patterns, symbols and perspectives that are cohesive throughout my work.

The plains in this world are unlike ours and you will often come across secret doors, portals and optically illusive pathways. Immerse yourself in the ScribblaCity, the native language formed in symbols throughout and get lost with the creatures through the secret doors waiting for you.

Release

Amanda Kay

FRIDAY 7 JUNE — SATURDAY 22 JUNE

ART PARTY LAUNCH EVENT: 5.30PM THURSDAY 6 JUNE

This exhibition explores the temporal act of writing, erasing and re-writing one’s story in paint; a cathartic process that allows one to let go, clearing the mind and body. Release is an exploration of trauma on the feminine which contemplates the hidden complexities of the mind. Through their process of making, the artist observes rapid thought patterns, transcribing these into the work and re-writing memories.

EXHIBITION

SeaWorthy

Edwina Cooper

FRIDAY 7 JUNE — SATURDAY 22 JUNE

ART PARTY LAUNCH EVENT : 5.30PM THURSDAY 6 JUNE

SeaWorthy investigates the dynamic relationship between the hull of a boat and the body of water it traverses.

This installation uses boat building methods for shaping timber to take ‘relief casts’ from the hulls of existing vessels — which when abstracted, mimic the shape of either hull or wave. Amassing in the gallery, this installation physically and metaphorically draws out the threshold space and relationships between boat and water / air and sea / human and non-human.

SeaWorthy is motivated by reframing our relationship with water — considering themes of oceanic immensity alongside our responsibilities to better care for and encourage respectful cohabitation with water spaces.

EXHIBITION

Animal Prestige

Duncan Hose

FRIDAY 7 JUNE — SATURDAY 22 JUNE

Image: Duncan Hose, Catteh, 2020, ink on papery

ART PARTY LAUNCH EVENT: 5.30PM THURSDAY 6 JUNE

How do animals, including humans, understand each other at a moment’s notice?

By projecting and perceiving behaviours such as grace, intelligence, learning, style, wit, intimidation and beauty. These are examples of humans using their status, or prestige, to claim territory. Displaying prestige is an animal tactic of dominance or seduction — it is a trick of glamour. These works explore the concept of animals performing prestige through the medium of drawing.

Empower

Tilly Ferguson

FRIDAY 28 JUNE — SATURDAY 20 JULY

ART PARTY LAUNCH EVENT: 5.30PM THURSDAY 27 JUNE

“In 2016, I’m sitting with a counsellor discussing the dark hole I think I’m stuck in. He tells me no matter what the situation, there is always a choice. I start looking for options in a new light and try changing my viewpoint.”

The two meditation lamps in this exhibition illustrate this experience. The plus and cross of each lamp change appearance depending on the viewpoint, background or lighting, yet remain centred and balanced within the frame. To the artist, this represents taking the time to centre oneself and to choose authenticity and empowerment.
