Welcome to Moonah Arts Centre
As we approach the end of the year, the creativity and vibrancy of our local community continues to flourish! I am excited to share another engaging program of exhibitions, live events and workshops for everyone.
Our School Holiday Program is returning in full force this October, offering two weeks of visual art and performance workshops and free events for young people to explore, create and learn through play. I am particularly excited for the Clowning Around workshop for children aged 8-12 years (Tuesday 8 October), run by international circus star, Samora Squid. Participants will develop their own unique character and storyline, learn techniques to spark laughter and hype up a crowd. View the full schedule of workshops and free events via moonahartscentre.org.au.
To wrap up the holidays, we will be transforming Moonah Arts Centre into a vibrant playground of sound and light for a free all-ages gig — Electro Playground (Friday 11 October). Headliner Electrolyte Orchestra will be crafting sonic landscapes for young audiences to lose themselves in. Supported by a lineup of local emerging musicians, this will be a high energy night of dancing and fun.
Entry into all the gallery spaces at Moonah Arts Centre is free – all year round, meaning everyone is invited to experience an ever-changing display of exhibitions from a range of artists. This season includes the ever-inspiring annual Glenorchy Open exhibition (15 November – 21 December). This exhibition is a highlight of my calendar, sharing the creativity and diversity of our community members. From professional artists to those who dabble, this exhibition brings us together in all our forms of creative expression.
For our older community members, we are offering a range of activities to connect generations as part of Seniors Week 2024 (14-20 October). Join artists from the Women’s Art Prize Tasmania 2024 Finalists exhibition for a cup of tea to discuss their work (Saturday 19 October).
Also for Senior’s Week, visit Moonah Arts Centre with the older people/younger people in your life for an intergenerational creative art workshop – paint a portrait of your favourite pet (Wednesday 16 October) or drop in between 11am-12.30pm on Saturday 19 October for a free art-making event led by artist Yilian Basser.
Read on for further details on all of the above. I’ll see you at Moonah Arts Centre!
Warmest regards,
Sue Hickey

Songs That We Carry Lutruwita
Art Orchestra
7.30PM SATURDAY 5 OCTOBER
Lutruwita Art Orchestra is a 17-member ensemble that creates a unique sonic culture through diversity in instrumentation and musical traditions, collaborating and creating through improvisation and radical fusion.
Songs That We Carry weaves together an exploration of music to which each member of the orchestra has deep connections. Songs are sourced from childhood, folk songs, poems or original compositions and speak to landscapes, ideas and ancestral culture. They are woven into a rich musical tapestry that opens a window to other worlds, other lives and the infinite possibilities of connectedness.
The performance will be accompanied by responsive visuals by filmographer Takani Clark, creating a stunning backdrop for this musical adventure.
Tickets $30-40 via moonahartscentre.org.au

The Other Side
Collaborative Group Project
FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER — SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER
LAUNCH EVENT: THURSDAY 17 OCTOBER
The Other Side explores themes of beauty and mystery through the material process of camera-less photography and abstract mark-marking.
This exhibition showcases collaborative work from participants of a recent Chemigram workshop run by artist Simone Darcy.
Chemigrams are created by forcing a chemical reaction between photographic paper and photographic chemistry. Resistant household materials (such as wax, Vaseline, nail polish, oil, etc.) are painted, scratched and sprayed onto the paper and then submerged into chemical trays to form patterns and marks resembling celestial dark matter.

2024 Finalists Exhibition
FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER — SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER
Celebrating the talent and diversity of women artists practicing throughout this state, the WOMEN’S ART PRIZE TASMANIA aims to inspire, facilitate and celebrate the development of professional and emerging women artists in Lutruwita/Tasmania.
As Lutruwita’s/Tasmania’s only art competition exclusively featuring artists who identify as women, this exhibition provides an important platform to showcase their work.
LAUNCH EVENT: THURSDAY 17 OCTOBER
The $2000 People’s Choice Award will be presented at the Moonah Arts Centre opening by the Director of Madeline Gordon Gallery, Madeline Gordon.
Special Guest Speaker at Launch Event: The Hon. Madeleine Ogilvie MP, Minister for the Arts and Minister for Women.

Broken Home
Donna Bergshoeff
FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER — SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER
LAUNCH EVENT: THURSDAY 17 OCTOBER
Broken Home examines concepts of territory and identity in connection to domestic spaces.
It explores the relationship between these spaces and the effect they have on our evolution of self.
This body of work and the stories it tells draw parallels between personal archaeology and the subjective way people create a “home”.
Donna Bergshoeff is a photo-based artist with an inquiring interest into identity and its ever fluctuating role in our lives.

FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER —
SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER
Touring annually, this exhibition celebrates the creativity and artistic achievements of the Tasmanian art education community.
Highlighting the balance between teaching and artistic practice, this exhibition offers a platform for visual art educators to share their work, discuss challenges and inspire their peers. The work of these artists reflects the commitment to both their art and their profession, giving insight into their dual roles as creators and educators.
