Welcome to the Moonah Arts Centre January-March Program 2024. We are excited to welcome the new year with a captivating schedule of international and local artists and musicians.

During the first quarter of 2024, we are proud to partner with MONA FOMA Festival to present two incredible projects, The Shruti Sessions — bringing ten of the world’s most talented and celebrated musicians from India and Australia to MAC to perform a series of music events, and Bollywouldn’t — an exhibition from artist TextaQueen presenting decolonial narratives and the reclamation of power and space by South Asian diaspora.

We will also welcome South Sudanese funk and blues legend, Ajak Kwai, Guinean fusion/groove ensemble, Jarabi Band and country rock troubadour, William Crighton to perform live at MAC. We are excited to have DRILL Performance Company return in March to present Kaleidoscope — the annual performance from their junior company, as well as celebrate the heartbeat of Tasmania’s diverse cultural influences during Harmony Week with a free festival.

With a rotating roster of exhibitions, workshops and events, there is something for everyone to do at MAC. I trust we will see you soon at Moonah Arts Centre.

OTHER FURNITURE X H A N D M A D E M AT T E R S F R I D AY 2 6 J A N U A R Y — S AT U R D AY 1 0 F E B R U A R Y During 2022, Ben Grieve-Johnson and Jon Grant collaboratively designed a chair to be made using traditional techniques. A Thread That Binds presents a series of prototypes, accompanied by the artists’ reflections on the design processes and the nature of crafting furniture through collaboration.

To bring awareness to a craft few people are familiar with, this exhibition will include a demonstration of the process by the artists as they teach the design to a student in the gallery.

TREE OF LIFE MARGARET LOVETT-WILSON F R I D AY 2 6 J A N U A R Y — S AT U R D AY 1 0 F E B R U A R Y Tree of Life is a series of new and existing paintings and drawings, including large life figure studies, sketch books and portraits of people, chooks and gumtrees.

Born in Austins Ferry, Margaret Wilson still lives and paints in Glenorchy. As an adult, she travelled widely in Australia, which influenced her arts practice. She studied in Adelaide where she achieved a profile as an artist, mainly painting portraits and what she calls her “chook pictures”. While chickens remain a favourite subject for Margaret, her oeuvre includes landscapes, garden scenes, portraits and various animal pictures.

SONIC DOUBLE CLAUDINE ARENDT & MARIA BLACKWELL F R I D AY 2 6 J A N U A R Y — S AT U R D AY 1 0 F E B R U A R Y Sonic Double asks how we can deal with loss; personal loss and the ongoing loss of biodiversity. Sonic Double brings together the Irish tradition of sharing cultural and familial histories through song, with the science/art practice of providing shape to the echoes of tiny underwater organisms.

Maria Blackwell uses found vocal recordings from a deceased family member and adds the resolved vibration of harmony. Processing grief through collaboration and creating a living connection to the remnants of memory.

Claudine Arendt takes scientifically determined acoustic echoes of marine species, processed through a porcelain cast, rendering tangible the invisible world of marine zooplankton.

WILLIAM CRIGHTON WITH SPECIAL GUEST BEANS ON TOAST 7.30PM THURSDAY 25 JANUARY The last two years have seen Australian artist William Crighton win an ARIA, support Midnight Oil on their final tour both in Australia and Europe, play his first Glastonbury, as well as release his third album “Water and Dust”. Crighton is one of Australia’s new generation of story tellers, his music has soaked in the essence of this country.

Crighton is joined by his good mate UK folk singer Beans on Toast. The pair met at the UK festival Boomtown in 2018 and have toured together on and off since, supporting each other’s home country shows. Beans on Toast is a folk hero in the UK, has played Glastonbury 15 times and released 15 albums. He’s a hippy, a punk, a poet, a drunk, a die-hard romantic and an eternal optimist.

7 . 3 0 P M S AT U R D AY 1 7 F E B R U A R Y Ajak Kwai is revered for her powerful performances and as a strong voice for an inclusive and diverse Australia.

Originally hailing from the small town of Bor on the Upper Nile in what is now South Sudan, music has always been part of her life.

Performing in English, Arabic and her native language, Dinka, Ajak Kwai’s music draws upon South Sudanese funk and blues influences and brings together elements of traditional music alongside more contemporary gestures. The result is something significant, unique, powerful and uplifting.

Ajak is supported by Guinean fusion/groove ensemble Jarabi Band. Jarabi means love and love resonates throughout everything the band do.

During this time, they will learn from each other, share their influences and technique to become a brand-new ensemble, performing for three nights only at Moonah Arts Centre.

Each performance will be a unique experience; a presentation of the relationship formed between these world-class musicians during the residency. Each night will be led by different members of the ensemble, offering a new experience for audiences in an intimate setting.

B O L LY W O U L D N ’ T T E X TA Q U E E N F R I D AY 1 6 F E B R U A R Y — S AT U R D AY 9 M A R C H Bollywouldn’t is a solo exhibition by Goan Indian artist TextaQueen. Through portraiture, photography and mural painting, Bollywouldn’t presents decolonial narratives and the reclamation of power and space by South Asian diaspora.

TextaQueen’s portraits of queer South Asian community have been digitally mapped onto buildings in and around London, creating the illusion that they exist as actual murals on a monumental scale against colonial structures.

Examining identity and the ever changing, endless possibilities contained in the human experience, this cast of creative young people have worked with professional dance and design artists to make a work that embraces the messy and wild parts of their personalities.

OUTLIERS 24 OUTLIER ARTIST STUDIO F R I D AY 1 5 M A R C H - S AT U R D AY 6 A P R I L OUTLIERS 24 showcases the highlights from the Outlier Artist Studio — a weekly facilitated studio program at Moonah Arts Centre. The Outlier Artist Studio is for artists working outside the mainstream visual arts industry or educational institutions, who may be self-taught or have no formal training in their chosen mediums.

Since 2022, the studio has provided a free space and materials for artists to develop a professional body of work, better understand their ideas and themes, and form a community of artists.

OBJECT HARMONICS ANN MENEZIES F R I D AY 1 5 M A R C H - S AT U R D AY 6 A P R I L Object Harmonics is a body of work by Tasmanian artist, Ann Menzies. Ann’s process involves immersing herself in the natural environment, specifically walking along the beaches, looking for shells, stones, leaves and seed pods. This is an important aspect of Ann’s artistic process, as this is where she feels most connected to her divine feminine energy.

This collection is steeped in symbolism — the objects in the paintings are stacked, depicting the Chakras and energy centres in our bodies. Through these depictions of amulets and chimes, Ann intends for the paintings to resonate frequencies of calm, of love, of life energy… do they resonate with you?

As the sun sets over Moonah, dance to global rhythms, savour diverse cuisines from local food vendors and celebrate our community with neighbours.

O P P O R T U N I T I E S FO R Y O U N G A R T I S T S YO UT H SOLO EXHIB ITION 2 0 2 4 We are looking for emerging young artists aged 25 and under to apply for their very own solo exhibition at Moonah Arts Centre.

Successful artists will receive experience preparing and presenting an exhibition, including writing an artist bio and statement, curatorial guidance with professional handling and installation of artworks, promotional support and professional documentation of the exhibition. There are no gallery hire fees for the recipients of this opportunity.

G LE NOR CH Y YOU TH OPEN 2 0 2 4 Not ready for a solo show? Enter The Glenorchy Youth Open 2024!

This is a community exhibition, celebrating the creativity of young and emerging artists, aged 25 and under who live, attend school, work or have a strong connection to the City of Glenorchy. Artists are invited to enter one work in any medium to be exhibited in the gallery.

Artwork to be delivered to Moonah Arts Centre with a completed entry form (found at moonahartscentre.org.au) between Tuesday 2nd - Friday 5th April 2024. Exhibition Dates 12th April - 4th May 2024.

Ages 11-16 years can sign up to a deep dive into mastering painting, exploring colour matching activities and developing their own still-life painting under the guidance of talented Tasmanian artists.

There will also be workshops for lovers of theatre and performing arts, circus skills, puppetry and more.
