Welcome to Moonah Arts Centre’s July, August and September Program. I am excited to share another engaging program of exhibitions, live events and workshops for the whole community.
Our beloved School Holiday Program returns in July, offering two weeks of workshops and free events for young people to explore, create and learn through play. Our workshop program includes Build a Bug (Tuesday 9 July) run by Science Communicator, Dr Shasta Henry (AKA The Bug Doctor) for children aged 6-12 years. Participants will learn the story of three endangered insect species from the islands of Tasmania, Lord Howe and Hawaii, then design and create their very own insect puppet, made out of recycled craft materials.
Entry into all the gallery spaces at Moonah Arts Centre is free – all year round, meaning everyone is invited to experience an ever-changing display of exhibitions from a range of artists. This season, I am particularly looking forward to Sleepwalkers (26 July – 17 August). This exhibition will share new work from a collection of artists, writers and poets exploring the fragility, impermanence and state of flux, we – and the environment – are currently experiencing.
Another exhibition I encourage you to participate in is Minds Do Matter (20 September – 12 October). This is a community exhibition for Mental Health Week, inviting everyone of all ages and abilities to enter artwork (closing 11 August). Find out more and how to enter your work within the program.
As always, this program contains a diverse range of live events, including PAGODA (6.30pm, Friday 20 September) curated by esteemed local performers, Emi Emi and Grace Chia. Celebrating the vibrant East Asian artistic community of Lutruwita, PAGODA will feature live music, dance, visual art and food, highlighting the diverse ways culture manifests in creative works and performances.
I’ll see you at Moonah Arts Centre!
Warmest regards, Sue Hickey

Cheryl Rose is a Pataway/Burnie-based artist and descendant of the Plangermaireener/Trawoolooway people from the Cape Portland area on the East Coast of Lutruwita.
Inspired by coastal lands and sea, Lutruwita Coastline acknowledges the past and present. Honouring her people and the Country on which they walked, cared for, gathered and suffered. The lands we continue to walk on and care for today and always.
Working with layered Japanese Kozo paper, Cheryl overlays hand rendered, etched, frottaged and printed images reflecting the intricacies of the coastline she calls home.

FRIDAY 23 AUGUST — SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER
LAUNCH EVENT: THURSDAY 22 AUGUST
Standing stones, mountains, obelisks, shards of light — these are our connection with the sky, with the heavens and with the ethereal world. Often on top of these connecting shapes, is a corona or crown of energy, symbolising enlightenment, a boundary between the profane and the sublime — or more mundanely, a paddock fence or aerial. These paintings represent life, all life, not just human, not just animate or visible, but that of animal, plant and stone. The spheres circling mysteriously above us in space, space itself, this whole conglomerate of wonder and joy that is our life. In the end, we are all luminous.

Drawing a drawing is not very boring. My drawings are drawings that keep me from snoring. My drawings of drawings will help you exploring. These drawings of drawings are fabulously soaring, high and low, to and fro. My little stories that come and go.
I invite you to come and explore my drawings that I have created by pen, ipad, oil pastel, ink, fingers, hands, knees and toes. Perhaps not the last couple of body parts. Fun, colour and nonsense for everyone, an escape from the serious, stuffy and bland.
That is all. Enjoy. Or not.
