TANKOA YACHTS’ LATEST DAZZLING FULL CUSTOM SUPERYACHT
Signed in 2021 and delivered in the summer of 2024, Diamond Binta is a stunning fusion of innovation and elegance, showcasing the latest achievement from the renowned Tankoa Yachts shipyard in Italy.
Unveiled to widespread acclaim at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show, this 58 metre embodies bespoke craftsmanship, where every detail from her refined exterior to her sophisticated interiors reflects the art of boutique yacht building. Diamond Binta is a full custom yacht designed with a unique and distinctive style that fully expresses the owner’s personality and needs. To bring the owner's vision to life, the shipyard partnered again with Francesco Paszkowski Design Studio to capture a beautiful,
timeless and understated mood for the yacht, both inside and out. Collaboration between the shipyard, the owner, and the design team was key, generating a synergy evident in every aspect of the final product.
“Our design philosophy for Diamond Binta included the owner’s requests and extended beyond them, focusing on creating a welcoming ambience defined by understated elegance,” Paszkowski states.
Diamond Binta takes many elements found on modern yachts: a large beach club aft, for example, and a panoramic top deck
gym, main deck master suite, large tender garage capable of housing a 9-metre limo tender, and a helipad forward on the upper deck. The spacious beach club includes a generous seating area and a treatment room with a glass wall that allows light to flood in when the two side terraces are lowered and the transom door is opened. There’s also a skylight from the main deck to illuminate this popular area further.
The owner’s passion for engineering is evident in a striking lower deck feature, which the Tankoa Yachts team has
beautifully engineered. A guest corridor with large panoramic windows into the spotless engine room runs on the centre line between the beach club and the lower deck guest accommodation. Diamond Binta boasts five guest cabins, including two with Pullman beds to cater to up to 12 guests, and in addition, there’s a full beam master suite forward on the main deck complete with starboard side lounge and study next to a drop-down owner terrace.
Up top on the fly deck, there’s a pool with built-in spa jets developed in-house
by the shipyard and a generous lounging and alfresco dining area aft. The central section is given to a protected, enclosed gym with spectacular views to inspire guests while working out. Alongside the pool, a custom-designed bar and two round sunbeds complete the amenities. The wheelhouse also gets its own design treatment, highlighting its more technical nature, for which the team drew inspiration from automotive design. Using dark brown hard leather, accented by subtle red details, achieves a fine balance between elegance and functionality. This masculine and

understated ambience sets the wheelhouse apart from the yacht’s other interiors, reflecting its focused and specialised purpose.
The next chapter in Diamond Binta’s story takes her owners to new horizons as they enjoy her comfort, elegance, and functionality on her maiden cruises towards the States, where the yacht will make her U.S. debut at the Palm Beach International Boat Show this month.

PUBLISHERS COMMENT DOUG DUKESON
WOW, 200 ISSUES... COVERING 29 YEARS!
Ivividly remember my first road trip south after returning from a year tripping through Europe. Throughout my time away, I kept in touch with my old workmate, Barry Thompson, at Vantage Publishing- mostly by fax - picking up on a conversation we had before my departure, planting a seed that, upon my return, we should consider launching a fresh take on PowerBoat Magazine. This idea emerged after the demise of Boating World, which was an amalgamation of our previous titles, Sea Spray and Power Boat magazines.
In February 1996, after returning to New Zealand, I flew to Invercargill and drove back to Auckland in a Mitsubishi V3000, visiting industry leaders along the way and pitching a new, 100% powerboating magazine. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and just three months later, in June 1996, we launched Propeller Magazine at the then New Zealand Boat Show. The rest, as they say, is history.
Over the years, these 200 issues included Propeller, Launch & MotorYacht, Australian Propeller, Alloy Boat Magazine, Performance and Race Boat, and annuals like Pacific PassageMaker, RIB Magazine, PWC Magazine, and Motor Yacht Magazine, which even appeared as a China MotorYacht version!). All of this certainly kept us on our toes. Our team worked tirelessly to bring our readers the latest and best in specialist powerboating content, and our team has enjoyed every moment of it.
I want to express my heartfelt thanks to our team—editorial, advertising, and design, both past and present, including our loyal and talented team of contributors on both sides of the Tasman. A big thanks must go out to the marine industry and our dedicated readers from both New Zealand and Australia. Your support over the last 29 years has allowed us to create what we believe is the best power boating read available.
Happy reading. We look forward to seeing you at the Auckland Boat Show from March 6th to 9th. Stop by the stand to celebrate our 200th issue with us.

AN EVOLUTION IN STYLE AND A REVOLUTION IN PERFORMANCE
The Grand Banks 54 is a remarkable reinvention of a classic. It offers an unbeatable combination of speed, comfort, and efficiency, achieving a top speed of 29 knots while maintaining an impressive range of nearly 500 miles at 21 knots.
The design prioritises flexibility for both owners and crew, allowing the GB54 to be manoeuvred easily by a couple or even single-handedly when needed. With excellent visibility from the helm, a convenient starboard-side helm door, and a seamless transition from the helm stations to the deck, operating this yacht is a breeze—whether you're at the dock, catching a mooring, or dropping anchor.
THE MODEL RANGE
The Grand Banks 54 is available in Sedan and Flybridge models, offering customisable layout options for two or three staterooms. Depending on your preference, the galley can be positioned on the main deck for easy access and social interaction, or you may opt for a down galley, which provides a more dedicated and separate cooking area. Each configuration includes a spacious, beautifully appointed master suite and a double VIP cabin.
THE DESIGN
The design of Grand Banks Yachts is a beautiful fusion of classic elegance and modern innovation, firmly anchored in a rich, iconic maritime heritage. Originally renowned for crafting wooden vessels,
Grand Banks has evolved over the years to incorporate cutting-edge construction techniques while remaining true to the timeless design elements of the traditional Grand Banks trawler.
THE EXTERIOR
The classic silhouette of the Grand Banks, complemented by a gracefully curved sheer line and an innovative hull design and construction process, provides a sophisticated profile that enhances aesthetics while also ensuring optimal performance and fuel efficiency. Expansive decks offer ample space for relaxation and entertaining, featuring wide side decks with high bulwarks and handholds, as well as an extended boat deck that shelters the aft deck from the elements.
THE INTERIOR
The interiors of the GB54 are a reminder that timeless elegance, indulgent luxury, and practical seamanship can all co-exist equally. The handcrafted wood finishes created by artisans, fine fabrics and leathers are all sewn by their own in-house upholstery team. Designed and engineered for enhanced rigidity by fusing the bulkheads and fixed furniture with the hull, the yachts
feature meticulously planned internal layouts during the early design stages. This allows for flexibility in galley placement and stateroom configurations to optimise space utilisation and storage.

HIGHFIELD LAUNCHES ADV7
The ADV 7 is the result of a successful collaboration with renowned design and engineering studios, VOM Creations and Alpha Studio in Ljubljana. Naval architecture work was expertly undertaken by Andrej Justin. This partnership has fused innovative design and engineering expertise to create a new iteration of a versatile RIB that stands out in both performance and aesthetics. Every detail of the ADV 7 has been crafted to focus on improved functionality, performance, usability, comfort and quality while retaining the distinctive Highfield rugged identity and famed sea-keeping ability. The hull is a deep-V design with a very fine entry and 22 degrees of transom deadrise. It has been meticulously designed to comfortably seat up to eight people, making it perfect for both adventurous outings and family leisure time.
Among its array of innovative features are two large sundecks for enhanced comfort, providing ample space for relaxation and sunbathing. Its 2-metre internal beam offers plenty of room for family and friends and their gear for long days out on the water. The aft section is the ideal social space, perfect for socialising and dining at anchor. The optional marine toilet caters to all members of the family and ensures longer trips are more comfortable.
The heavy-duty T-top provides excellent sun protection, especially when combined with the stern shade. It is robust yet stylish. Meanwhile, safe water access is guaranteed thanks to the well-designed stern platforms, making boarding and re-boarding effortless. The stern arch is ideal for water sports enthusiasts, adding to the boat’s versatility.
The inflatable tubes serve multiple purposes by adding an extra layer of security and safety for your family, and acting as a fender during docking. The new model also gives the impression of being much larger than its actual size. It offers incredible interior space and features for a boat of this size while remaining very easy to tow behind a family saloon car or SUV.
Scheduled for launch in Australia at the 2025 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, 22 to 25 May on Queensland’s Gold Coast, the ADV7 will be one of the major model launches.

200 ISSUES ON
We are thrilled to present the 200th issue of PacificPowerboatMagazine. D&B Publishing is also gearing up to celebrate another significant milestone next year—our 30th year anniversary in business, an incredible achievement!
Much has changed since the release of our 100th issue, so we’re taking a moment to reflect on some key highlights and the journey that’s brought us to where we are today. To kick things off, we’re revisiting an article from the archives, penned by our late co-publisher and editor, Barry Thompson, when
PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE AT ISSUE 100:
Comments made by Editor and business partner at the time, the late Barry Thompson.
It only seems like yesterday that Doug Dukeson and I launched the first issue of NZ PropellerMagazine at the 1996 New Zealand Boat Show. The country’s first magazine totally dedicated to trailer boats, NZPropellerMagazine proved an instant success.
The cover of the very first issue of
That first issue featured a Buccaneer 720 Elite on the cover and our first boat tests were the Buccaneer 720 plus a Bonito 685 Calais and an Alli-Craft 450. We also ran the first of our ongoing features on buyers guides with a look at twenty 5.5m GRP cabin boats and a story on the growth in sales of diesel sterndrives. We followed that over the years with the industry’s first engine shootouts on everything from 30hp through to 300hp outboards and compared petrol, diesel and outboard power on the same boats.
One thing we have prided ourselves on over the past 17 years is our well-researched and in-depth technical articles.
Interestingly, we had advertisers in that first issue, such as Buccaneer, Fi-Glass, DMW Trailers, L&B, Tohatsu, Rayglass, CSB Huntsman, Volvo Penta, Mercury, Stabicraft and Yamaha that are still with us today and in this 100th issue.
Boat tests have always been a strong point of the magazine, with many hundreds of trailer boat reviews to date. Many of those are already on our website for purchase, and in time, we hope to have just about all of them available to download. We have always tried to offer a mixed bag of boats in each issue and not concentrate on one particular style or size.
During the buoyant years pre the GFC, there were plenty of boats available, with local manufacturers and importers endlessly coming up with new models, so the choices were vast. That has certainly changed in recent years, with slim pickings in some areas, although the alloy boat market seems to keep producing new offerings more so than the fibreglass builders.
In 1998 we could see a gap in the non-trailerable boat market so we launched Pacific MotorYacht to cater for powerboats over 10m. This was at a time when the America’s Cup was in New Zealand and the big boat industry was riding a high. Initially a quarterly, this soon changed to a bi-monthly and was published on alternate months to NZ Propeller. With interest building for the magazines in Australia, we expanded our horizons in 2001 and started distribution across the Tasman. Sales were good but we could see the need for a specialist Australian edition. Along with experienced and well respected marine journalist Barry Tyler, who took up the role as our Australian editor, we launched Australian Propeller in May 2003. While we enjoyed some buoyant times, as the market got tighter so did the advertising returns and in March 2005, after 12 issues we decided to absorb it back into NZ Propeller

PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAGAZINE 200 ISSUES ON
Since releasing its 100th issue in 2013, PacificPowerBoatMagazine (after the merge of Propeller and Launch & Motor Yacht Magazines) has continued to consistently provide extensive coverage of the power boating industry, including boat reviews, equipment updates, safety tips, destination guides, and buyer’s guides. Throughout its 200 issues, the magazine has reviewed well over 1,000 boats and published approximately 850 features across countless pages.
Since the 100th issue of Pacific PowerBoat Magazine was published in 2013, we expanded our content by including additional stand-alone magazines within each issue, targeting specific sectors of the marine market to include:
- Alloy Boat Magazine
- Pacific PassageMaker Annual
- RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat Magazine)
- PWC (Personal Water Craft Magazine)
We also embraced digital platforms, allowing readers to access issues on various devices, phones, ipads and computers, switching between PDF and text modes, and being able to receive notifications for new issues available. The PowerBoat website now stores current and back issues 116 in fact, past features and boat reviews which are now sitting at a count of 919.
We recorded the 25th year anniversary of D&B Publishing in May/June 2021 issue and celebrated at the 2021 Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show.
In late 2022, Barry, with over 50 years of marine publishing, negotiated a semiretirement package with 26 year business partner Doug Dukeson, to enable him to kick back and enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle, which he had been doing in more recent times, still as a contributor to PowerBoat.
Doug Dukeson and his wife Carla took over the helm of PowerBoat Magazine in April 2023.
In May 2023, Holly Dukeson (Doug’s daughter) returned from her Europe adventures and joined the team, as Sales and Marketing Manager, bringing fresh new youthful ideas to the Pacific PowerBoat portfolio.
Sadly, tragedy struck the D&B team along with the rest of the marine industry when Barry Thompson passed away suddenly on 8 September 2023. Barry, along with Doug, was a familiar sight at boat shows, factories, and international marine industry events. His relaxed persona, wit and good humour were a testament to his humble nature, even though many would say that his industry and product knowledge surpassed most others in the marine industry.
Husband to Soraja, father to Carl, Mitchell and Travis – long-time business partner of Doug Dukeson and mentor to so many, Barry left this world far too soon and the tributes and celebrations of his life, both in NZ and Australia, were a testament of the lives he touched.
Over the past 28 years, the D&B Publishing team have published Pacific Powerboat Magazine along with various annuals, including Alloy Boat Magazine, PWC Annual, Performance and Race Boat, Pacific PassageMaker, RIB Annual, several Boat Test Books and even an edition of China Yachting, a Chinese version of Pacific MotorYacht.
These highlights demonstrate Pacific PowerBoat Magazine’s commitment for almost 30 years to provide comprehensive coverage of the powerboating industry and its evolution to meet readers' changing needs.
Today, Doug Dukeson runs the magazine alongside his wife, Carla, and daughter, Holly, making it a real family affair with a multi-generational team - along with their knowable team of contributors they are passionate and moving with the times to deliver a mix of digital and printed versions of your favourite power boat fix.
The team today, along with long time associate Phil Smith, our print representative from SCG for over 10 years.
NEW ZEALANDERS’ LOVE OF BOATS GOES SUPERSIZE AS LARGE YACHTS DEBUT AT AUCKLAND BOAT SHOW
More than 1.3 kilometres of boats on the water, and 200 more vessels on land mean this year’s Auckland Boat Show is lining up to be the biggest New Zealand’s ever seen. When the Auckland Boat Show kicks off on 6 March, it will be a celebration of New Zealanders’ love of being on the water. So much so that there will be more than 1.3 kilometres of boat on display on the marina alone.
The show, in central Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre and Jellicoe Harbour, has become an annual release hub for new vessels and marine innovation. Once focused primarily on domestic releases, it’s grown into the region’s show of choice to release large yachts and other vessels from around the world as the New Zealand boating market increasingly seeks out the new, innovative, and luxurious.
“In the 24 years of the Auckland Boat Show, we’ve seen a distinctive increase in the size of yachts displayed at the show,” says show organiser, Stacey Cook. “Not only are we seeing much larger boats on display, with this year’s largest vessel sitting at 29 metres, we’re also seeing demand for luxury charter yachts as New Zealanders take to the seas, both here and in international waters.” Some of those large yachts now entering the New Zealand market are from the Greek brand, Omikron Yachts, which has recently been awarded the prestigious European Powerboat Award for its OT-60 and launched a new flagship OT-80 off the back of that success. “We’ve recognised the need for bigger and bigger yachts to grace the sparkling Waitemata,” says Paul McDonald of McD Yachts, the brokerage house introducing both the OT60 and OT-80 to New Zealand.
For the first time in New Zealand, two Sunreef yachts will be on display in a New Zealand boat show. At 23 metres, and with space for eight guests and three crew, Sunreef 70, Ginette is available for charter and of sale via Ocean Independence, and for charter comes complete with a full toy
inventory, including a five metre Smuggler Marine RIB, two paddle boards, wind surfing, kite boarding, scuba diving, and game fishing equipment, plus a private chef to cook any catches. “People are moving to bigger volume yachts and a catamaran suits that purpose superbly,” says Ocean Independence’s Blair MacLeod.
“A catamaran is also extremely stable and suits the new market of owners and charters who prioritise comfort, space, ease of handling and a strong connection to the water.” For those who prefer to own, a Sunreef 80 ft motoryacht will be on show within the brokerage section of the show. A custom vessel, built for extended voyages, this yacht is spacious, luxurious and has four staterooms, an hydraulic swim platform and plenty of lounging areas to make the most of time on the water.
Another debut this year; European Marine will present the Sasga 55FB. This striking flybridge yacht is made for cruising with superb performance, excellent range, comfort, and ease of handling. Space onboard is well-suited to New Zealand conditions with a full flybridge, large sundeck and spacious interior to cater to any weather. For 15 years, Family Boats has brought BRIG RIBs to the New Zealand market with the
latest model set to have its New Zealand premiere at the Auckland Boat Show. Recognised globally as a leader in innovation and design, BRIG
continues to set the standard with the new Navigator 22. Featuring a reinforced deep-V hull, spacious console, ergonomic helm seating, and sharp design, this vessel delivers a thrilling, stable ride even at high speeds.
Tickets are on sale now for the Auckland Boat Show 2025, and visitors can expect growth on the 2024 show, which displayed 400 boats and a wide array of marine product and service companies. The event’s sea trial marina allows show visitors to not only learn about new products, vessels and services, but to also experience them on the Waitematā Harbour. Known for that large sea trial area, and for providing a launching point for new marine releases, it is a favourite on the southern hemisphere marine calendar.
“We’re a marine nation and it makes sense that we lead the world in creating better ways to be safer, faster, and more sustainable on the water,” says show organiser, Stacey Cook. AUCKLAND-BOATSHOW.COM

The Boating Industry Association (BIA) is transforming Australia’s boat show landscape from 2025 with the introduction of two dynamic new formats designed to better align with industry needs, global trends and public interest.
BIA President Adam Smith announced a major new boat show and festival at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park from 14–17 August 2025. This event will spotlight paddle, power, and sailboats up to 10m in length, alongside cutting-edge marine technology, accessories, and the ever-popular boat-based fishing sector.
“Sydney Olympic Park is the perfect venue, offering worldclass exhibition facilities, excellent public transport, ample parking and the ability to expand outdoors," said Smith. "It places a premier boating event right at the geographic heart of Sydney with its vast population of more than 6 million. The event will be staged in The Dome and adjacent Exhibition Halls at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park. A link to a virtual tour of the venue is here.
In another significant change, the Sydney International Boat Show will move to November, embracing Sydney’s stunning spring weather and shifting away from traditional indoor exhibition space to fully utilise the harbourside precinct. The event will focus on larger in-water power and sail craft (10m to 30m+) while delivering an enhanced outdoor experience for visitors and exhibitors alike. “Our decision to move the Sydney International Boat Show to November allows us to take full advantage of the city’s ideal spring conditions - longer, warmer days and perfect boating weather," Smith added. "By stepping away from conventional indoor exhibition halls and fully activating the harbourside precinct, we’re creating a truly immersive experience where people can connect with the boating lifestyle in the most natural setting, on and around the water."
"These exciting changes are designed to meet the evolving needs of both the industry and boating enthusiasts," explained Adam Smith. By introducing two distinct formats, the BIA aims to create more engaging and accessible opportunities, allowing people to experience the best of boating in Australia.
Further details on both events, including information on how to apply for exhibition space, will be released in the coming weeks.
SCIBS UNVEILS LUXURY SEA TRIAL PRECINCT AS EXHIBITOR SPACE NEARS SELL-OUT.
A 100% electric hydrofoiling experience will be one of the showstopping attractions at the 36th Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS), taking place from May 22-25, 2025.
As Australia’s largest marine lifestyle event, SCIBS continues to push boundaries – this year with the launch of a brand new Luxury Sea Trial Precinct, giving premium buyers an exclusive opportunity to test-drive cutting-edge vessels on the stunning Gold Coast waters. With exhibitor space already 80% sold, the 2025 event is set to be bigger than ever, featuring the latest in marine innovation, opulent superyachts, and world-leading marine brands.
For the first time, the expansion of the Sanctuary Cove Marina superyacht arm on J Pier – including 25 new berths – will allow high-end buyers to step aboard and experience the thrill of a sea trial on luxury vessels. Among the standout experiences will be the Candela C-8, a revolutionary 100% electric hydrofoiling boat that glides above the water for a near-silent, ultrasmooth ride. Chris Hrones, Co-founder and Managing Director of Carbon Yachts, which will debut the vessel, says this is a momentous occasion for electric boating in Australia. “We are incredibly excited to premiere the Candela C-8 at Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. There is no better setting to showcase the future of sustainable luxury on the water.”
SCIBS 2025 will showcase an unrivalled collection of marine products and vessels from world-leading manufacturers and companies, including: AMC, Dometic, Horizon Motor Yachts, Maritimo, Northside Marine, Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Riviera, Princess Yachts, Shimano, Suzuki, Yachtsales Co, and Yachtsman International. Corey Rattray-Wood, Head of Events at Mulpha Events, says the demand for exhibitor space underscores the show’s influence. “SCIBS is where the marine industry does business. Every year, our exhibitors secure incredible sales results, and 2025 will be no exception.”
Last year’s sold-out show attracted 334 exhibitors, 767 boats – including a record-breaking 356 on the water – and over 2,500 marine products. The event contributed more than $400 million to the Queensland economy, with $380 million in direct industry sales and $20 million in visitor expenditure.
Michaela Claes, Operations Manager at Pantaenius Sail & Motor Yacht Insurance, confirms the event’s commercial impact. “This is our 13th consecutive year at SCIBS, and every year the results surpass our expectations. It’s our main event for the domestic market and the highlight of the year for meeting both industry and customers. What the Mulpha Events team creates is simply amazing.
The 36th Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is shaping up to be an unmissable event for marine enthusiasts, industry leaders, and luxury lifestyle seekers.

LIFEJACKETS SAVE LIVESCOASTGUARD BEGS KIWIS TO
“JUST WEAR IT”
This year has been one of New Zealand’s worst for drownings in boating incidents, with only one of the 17 fatalities wearing a lifejacket, according to Water Safety New Zealand data.
As summer is well underway and Kiwis are out on the water, Coastguard is urging everyone to carry out one simple step before hitting the water: just wear your lifejacket. Shockingly, out of the six land-based fishing drownings last year, five people weren’t wearing lifejackets or had any available. Coastguard Head of Operations Rob McCaw says the charity is astounded that people are still not making this one simple behaviour change. "Lifejackets save lives. We’ve seen far too many preventable tragedies, and the message is simple: if you're on the water, wear a lifejacket." Across nine weeks this past winter, there were five incidents and nine fatalities – none of those who drowned were wearing a lifejacket.
Water safety doesn’t just concern one group; it affects all. Between 2014 and 2023, 18% of all drowning incidents involved Māori, making them the second-highest ethnicity affected, after NZ Europeans (49%). 15% of drownings involved Pacific people, and 6% involved the Asian community. "It’s not just about boaties or open water," Rob continued. "We’re urging everyone - jet skiers, paddle boarders, rock fishers and kayakers - to wear fit-for-purpose lifejackets. No matter what your waka, make sure that you are prepared on the water, whether it’s a lake, a river, or the ocean.”
Only 28% of people consider themselves competent swimmers, even fewer (21%) in open deep water. Men consider themselves more competent than women, but ironically, most drowning fatalities are male (83%). Over the past 12 months, Coastguard reported that in incidents where people required assistancewhether non-urgent or an emergency - only 67% involved people wearing lifejackets. An additional 29 percent had lifejackets available but were not wearing them.
Rob urges people to wear the right lifejacket for the occasion and person. “Too often we see children in adult lifejackets or lifejackets that are long past their best. It’s not going to help them stay alive if they fall into the water unexpectedly.” This summer, Coastguard are also highlighting the benefits of Coastguard Membership, invaluable for Kiwi boaties seeking peace of mind on the water. Membership provides 24/7 coverage for non-urgent on-water assistance such as breakdowns, flat batteries, fuel issues, and more, helping boaties return to shore safely without incurring steep towing fees. For non-members, such assistance could cost up to $350 an hour.
“If you’re hitting the water, make it a Coastguard summer and stay safe out there,” Rob concludes.

Fabrum, a New Zealand company leading the world in zero-emission transition technologies, has collaborated on the design and build of a zeroemission hydrogen-powered boat H2Ocean with King Watercraft, a developer of sophisticated New Zealand made rigid inflatable boats.
The H2Ocean hydrogen-powered rigid inflatable boat (RIB), a zero-emissions solution suitable for tourism, commercial and leisure activities, will begin sea trials in January 2025. The boat can be adapted to suit the environment and operations of the end user – and be equipped to carry up to 12 people, making it ideal for tourism and ferrying activities, or fewer people and specialist equipment, making it ideal for coastguard, servicing and event-based activities. The boat carries 18kg of 350 bar hydrogen gas, supplied to a fuel cell, which in turn maintains charging to a battery bank that is used to power the two electric stern legs.
Christopher Boyle, Fabrum’s Executive Chair, said: “It’s exciting to be enabling another world-leading zero-emissions hydrogen project with our high-performance hydrogen-powered RIB boat. In collaboration with King Watercraft, we are bringing our expertise in hydrogen propulsion systems to this project, which showcases how hydrogen can support a new future pathway for the marine industry to decarbonise. This initiative has added significance as our companies are based in Christchurch, fast becoming known as the Hydrogen City of New Zealand.”
“Hydrogen's adaptability to different sectors and capability to meet the diverse energy needs of industries with varying power and operational requirements underscores the potential for hydrogen to be a cornerstone of the future energy landscape to support global decarbonisation efforts, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and enable energy security and sustainability. The Fabrum team is committed to leading the way with world-leading zeroemission hydrogen projects.”
Will King, Founder and Managing Director of King Watercraft, said: “For over 10 years, we have focused on producing bespoke RIBS designed specifically for the needs of our customers in New Zealand and beyond. What makes us unique is our ability to push design boundaries to stand out from the crowd, always striving to be one step ahead. With a focus on being at the forefront of sustainable propulsion, the shared values of King Watercraft and Fabrum brought this idea to life and together, this project offers a lighter footprint for the marine industry here and around the world.”

HUTCHWILCO LAUNCHES VOLUNTARY RECALL OF INFLATABLE LIFEJACKET MODEL
New Zealand leading lifejacket manufacturer Hutchwilco is proactively recalling a specific model of their popular Inflatable Lifejacket.
Customers with manual 170N lifejackets manufactured from June 2021 to May 2022 are potentially affected. The recall comes following an advisory from their American supplier, Halkey Roberts, of a potential failure during testing of the green/red indicator
This is reported as an occasional issue only affecting some units. Whilst the firing pin mechanism still functions, the indicator may show that the lifejacket is ready for use when in fact it isn’t due to, for example, the cylinder not being screwed in properly or the cylinder being damaged. The lifejacket may not inflate if this happens.
“Ensuring our customers have the right quality equipment to keep them safe while out enjoying the water is always our top priority. That’s why it’s important for us to take these voluntary steps to get our customers sorted and back on the water quickly,” says Tim Ritchie, General Manager.
Recalled inflators can be found on your Hutchwilco 170N manual lifejacket that’s fitted with a V96000 Halkey Roberts mechanism with a manufacture date of June 2021 through to May 2022 (this will be laser printed on the mechanism in the format MM/DD/YY).
“We’re asking boaties to help us maintain our top-quality standards and take the time to check the mechanism in their 170N Inflatable Lifejacket. If your mechanism is a Halkey Roberts v96000 please head to www.hutchwilco.co.nz/recall and follow our three simple steps to get your faulty lifejacket back to us at our cost. Our team are standing by to remedy the situation by either replacing the mechanism in affected lifejackets or coordinating a refund from the mechanism’s manufacturer, Halkey Roberts. Either way we want to get customers sorted quickly so they can continue to make the best of summer,” says Mr Ritchie.
The large majority of Hutchwilco’s popular inflatable lifejackets are manufactured with an alternative branded mechanism and aren’t affected. Boaties can continue to have nothing but trust in New Zealand’s leading lifejacket and safety equipment provider. These are voluntary steps that are being taken to ensure customers aren’t impacted by an issue that’s outside of Hutchwilco’s control.

AZIMUT WINS THE 2025 MOTORBOAT AWARDS
Azimut kicks off the new year by announcing its victory at the 2025 Motorboat Awards, presented by the renowned industry magazine MotorBoat&Yachting.
At the awards ceremony, held last January 21st during boot Düsseldorf, Azimut received the Innovation Award, introduced this year for the first time to recognize shipyards committed to making a difference through the development of innovative solutions that will improve the future of yachting.
The jury awarded Azimut’s Seadeck 6 for best combining design innovations and solutions aimed at reducing the boat’s environmental impact, highlighting “its emphasis on recycled materials, lightweight build and hybrid power.” The jury noted that the project demonstrates how “being sustainable doesn’t have to mean sacrificing on style, luxury, range or speed.“
Additionally, Fly 72 was highly commended by the jury in the ‘Best Flybridge over 60 feet’ category, thus making a mark in this segment of vessels.
SEADECK 6
Seadeck 6 is the first model of the Azimut hybrid yacht Series chosen by the Shipyard to usher in the gentle era for a new relationship between man and nature. With the Seadeck 6, Azimut inaugurates a Series of the most efficient and sustainable yachts ever produced, capable of reducing CO2 emissions by up to 40% compared to traditional yachts of similar size.
Aiming at reducing CO2 emissions and energy consumption, Azimut combines the lightening of the superstructure through the extensive use of carbon fiber with an efficient latest-generation hull, developed by the Azimut|Benetti Group R&D office in collaboration with NAMES. Furthermore, the Seadeck 6 introduces the Mild Hybrid Zero Emission Hotel Mode system, in collaboration with Volvo Penta, which allows both zero-emission anchoring and cruising with the generator off, further reducing onboard consumption.
Attention to materials is another central aspect in the design of the Seadeck 6. Here, Azimut replaces traditional materials where possible with others from sustainable sources, of natural or recycled origin: from the cork used in place of teak, to Econyl, a fiber made from nylon recycled from fishing nets abandoned at sea and other sources, for the carpeting on the Lower Deck. The search for sustainable alternatives reaches down to the heart of the yacht, where PET from recycled plastic replaces PVC for the creation of some structural components.
With these innovations onboard the Seadeck 6, Azimut proposes a new lifestyle concept, further strengthened by the Fun Island conceived by Alberto Mancini: a reinterpreted beach area where the two opening lateral wings create a large terrace overlooking the sea and a high-low platform that easily leads to the sea and allows you to sit at water’s edge, all made comfortable by a large sunbed where guests can spend their time. A hymn to socializing on board, the Seadeck 6 has the connection between the people who inhabit the boat at its heart.

The easiest way to go boating in New Zealand
Eyachts, the exclusive distributor of Greenline Yachts in Australia and New Zealand, has been named Greenline Dealer of the Year and awarded Best Marketing & Content Creation at the prestigious Düsseldorf Boat Show. This global recognition comes as Greenline’s responsible yachting philosophy continues to gain momentum across the region, with Australians and Kiwis leading Greenline sales worldwide, making Eyachts the top-performing dealer. The range of yachts sold includes Greenline 39s, 40s, 45s, and 48s, with deliveries across Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales, and Auckland, as well as overseas handovers in Slovenia and even the USA, where an Australian couple plans to cruise the Great Loop.
Responsible Yachting on the Rise
The rapid adoption of Greenline Yachts reflects Kiwis and Australians' growing interest in hybrid propulsion and responsible yachting. According to Peter Hrones, Managing Director of Eyachts, this shift aligns with Greenline’s vision of delivering yachts that blend innovation with efficiency. “Greenline’s philosophy resonates deeply with Australian and New Zealand buyers. Many of our Greenline owners are experienced boaties who now prioritise shelter from the sun, stability on the ocean, and easy one-level living,” said Hrones. “The ability to cruise quietly using hybrid propulsion and solar power is a game-changer for those who want an effortless and enjoyable experience on the water.”

The Sea-Doo FishPro Range Refining Fishing on the Water
BY DOUG DUKESON
Sea-Doo has pioneered personal watercraft (PWC) fishing, with an extensive range designed to cater to everyone, from avid fishing enthusiasts to occasional anglers. The FishPro models, co-designed with Kiwi PWC fishing expert Andrew Hill, are purpose-built for fishing adventures. The range includes the FishPro Apex, Trophy, Sport, and Scout, offering diverse options for all types of anglers.
Late December, we had the chance to test these models, from the versatile 170HP Trophy to the newly-released powerhouse, the 300HP FishPro Apex—the first of its kind in the Asia Pacific region. Here’s a line-up breakdown, culminating in a close look at the day's hero: the Sea-Doo FishPro Apex.
Sea-Doo FishPro Sport
The original FishPro, the FishPro Sport, delivers a new take on fishing. You can move about to fish from sitting or standing positions, and its fishing bench seat is designed for comfort while driving or fishing. Five fishing rod holders allow rods to be placed in various locations around the craft, allowing convenient rod storage and improved trolling capabilities. Rods can be kept within reach or out of the way, as your adventure dictates.
Sea-Doo FishPro Trophy
The FishPro Trophy provides tournament-level fishing in every aspect, ingeniously designed features in a PWC. With its Modular Swivel Seat, the rear portion of the seat transforms into a pedestal seat ideal for sight fishing, installed in seconds for a game-changing experience. The Rotax® 1630 ACE™ - 170 is the most powerful naturally aspirated Rotax engine ever on a SeaDoo watercraft. Offering plenty of topend speed to get out to fishing grounds fast while running efficiently on fuel.
Sea-Doo FishPro Scout
The next model up, the FishPro Scout comes with a better fish finder, more rod holders and trolling modes. Equipped with nine pre-set trolling modes, you can find your perfect trolling speed (By dropping the jet bucket), set it once and focus on fishing. Select between the nine low-speed settings for your ideal bait presentation, all without needing to touch the throttle.
The Hero of the Day: The new Sea-Doo FishPro Apex!
The newest addition to the range, the FishPro Apex, represents the pinnacle of Sea-Doo’s fishing innovation. Its exclusive design, striking colour scheme, and limited one-year production run make it a standout. Powered by a 300HP Rotax 1630 ACE engine (Supercharged) —adopted from the high-performance RXT model—it delivers exhilarating speed, perfect for getting to the best fishing spots first.
During our test, we hit a thrilling 116 kph at wideopen throttle. The tall touring windshield provided excellent wind protection at this speed—just a meter above the sea! Stepping onto a model without a screen at 100kph reminded me how much the elasticity in one’s face cheeks reduces at 50 years plus. The Apex maintained notable stability, both at rest and underway, adding confidence even during the high-adrenaline moments. The Apex also introduces advanced features like a hydraulic steering damper and an adjustable handlebar riser, allowing riders to fine-tune their setup for maximum comfort and control. Andrew Hill shared an invaluable tip: by setting the trolling mode and adjusting the steering tension, anglers can troll in a straight line while focusing on underwater structures and fish activity—a testament to the Apex's thoughtful design.
Final Thoughts
I was impressed with the hole shot acceleration (0-100kph in 3 to 4 seconds) and top-end speed (116 kph on our day), the protection the windscreen offered, and the quietness of the FishPro Apex’s engine, even at wide open throttle. No longer is there the question of the compromise between a Performance PWC or a Fishing PWC – this unit combines the best of both – but be quick, these Sea-Doo FishPro Apex models are available for a limited time and in limited numbers!
Feature Highlights
The FishPro Apex is packed with innovative features:
• Garmin 9-inch Touchscreen Fish Finder GPS: Equipped with an in-hull transducer, chart plotting, and ride tracking for superior fishing insights.
• Twin Batteries: Support additional onboard electronics.
• LinQ Cooler with Live Bait Tank and Washdown: This cooler keeps bait and catch fresh and simplifies postadventure clean-up.
• Intelligent Debris-Free Pump System (iDF): This system clears clogged intakes at the push of a button, enabling worry-free exploration.
• Stereo System designed for marine conditions that certainly pump out the tunes.
• Seven Rod Holders are well-positioned and built to handle rough conditions and high speeds.
• Rear Deck Extension and LinQ Points: These provide extra stability and storage for fuel caddies or gear in several locations.
• A 70-litre built-in fuel tank. Plus, the mentioned provision for additional fuel on the rear deck ensures you’re ready for extended adventures.
• Generous watertight storage in the glove box and unique rear-opening front bin.

FLETCH'S TIPS
With the summer season in full swing, New Zealand's harbours and lakes are busy with activity. Whether you’re fishing, cruising, or enjoying a family day out, it's a great time to get on the water and make the most of those long days. However, with the increased boating traffic, it’s essential to stay vigilant about both safety and boat upkeep. These maintenance tips can help you make the most of your time on the boat. Stay safe, stay prepared, and enjoy everything our beautiful waters have to offer!
TIP #171
FUEL SYSTEM CHECK
Before embarking on any extended trip, one often-overlooked component of boat maintenance is the fuel system. Boats sitting unused for weeks or even months during winter, fuel lines and filters can become clogged or cracked. Always pre-summer check and replace the fuel filter(keep a spare one on board) and check fuel lines for cracks or leaks around the joins. I’ve had a few frustrating moments where an engine stopped due to a clogged filter and in one instance, I had water build up in the fuel from condensation during the long humid days.
Pro Tip: While you’re at it, check your fuel tank vent for blockages, this can lead to fuel-starvation issues when you’re at full throttle.
TIP #172
ANTIFOULING RECOATING
The New Zealand marine environment can be harsh on boats, particularly for those situated further north. One of the key boat ownership tasks is keeping your hull’s antifouling in working condition. As the New Zealand summer approaches, especially for boats moored in coastal estuaries, the antifouling layer tends to degrade more quickly. This leads to an accelerated growth of barnacles and other marine organisms that thrive in the warmer summer temperatures. If left unchecked, this growth will reduce your boat’s performance but can also cause long-term damage to the hull. If you notice the bottom of your boat starting to appear "green" or notice an increase in drag while in the water, dive in and inspect the condition of the antifoul. While you can scrape off any bad areas, the best solution is to haul the boat out of the water and apply a fresh layer of antifouling. You need to deal with the issue proactively before the long NZ summer begins, as this will help maintain optimal performance and prevent long-term hull damage.
STEERING LUBRICATIONSYSTEM
On a recent trip, I noticed a slight stiffness in my steering system, I did a quick inspection found that the steering cables had dried out. This issue can be avoided by regular checks and the application of a marine lubrication. Make sure to grease the steering cables or hydraulic system at the start of the summer, this check can save you from having to deal with more serious steering issues later.
Pro Tip: If you’re unsure about which lubricant to use, marinegrade grease is your best bet. Do not use lithiumbased grease is not waterproof and can be washed away in wet conditions.
TIP #175
ANCHORING ETIQUETTE: AVOIDING ANCHOR CONFLICTS
Nothing ruins a day on the water faster than getting your anchor tangled with someone else’s. When anchoring close to other boats, it’s important to give enough space to avoid this. Ideally, anchor 2-3 boat lengths away to ensure you don’t drift into someone else’s swing radius.
Quick tips:
• Check the bottom: Avoid rocky or weedy areas where your anchor might get stuck.
• Allow room for movement: Your boat will move with the wind or current, so ensure there’s enough space to avoid crossovers.
• Communicate with others: A quick chat with neighbouring boaters can help confirm spacing and avoid confusion.
Pro Tip: When anchoring in a congested bay, drop your anchor before approaching your parking area to avoid drifting into someone’s chain.
TIP #174 BATTERY CARE & MAINTENANCE
With many electrical components relying on your boat’s battery, it’s essential to give it some attention before summer. Corrosion on battery terminals can lead to voltage drops and make your engine hard to start. Regularly cleaning the terminals with a mixture of baking soda and water can help prevent build-up, as well as checking the charge and ensuring the battery is holding up well over time. It’s also worth checking that all cables are tightly secured and not showing signs of wear. A failing battery can leave you stranded, so it’s always better to replace it sooner rather than risk it failing mid-trip.
TIP #176 INSPECTING YOUR TRAILER LIGHTS
It’s one of those things we always forget until we’re stuck at the boat ramp in the dark checking trailer lights. Always make sure that your brake lights, turn signals, and running lights are working before a long trip this summer. A quick check of the wiring for any signs of wear, corrosion, or loose connections can prevent potential headaches at the ramp or, worse, a fine from the police. Consider upgrading to waterproof or sealed LED lights, which withstand being immersed in water and dusty road conditions.
Pro Tip: Adding some reflective tape to your trailer corners to improve visibility at night or in low-light conditions adds an extra layer of safety when you're towing in busy areas.

YAMAHA H2 HYDROGEN OUTBOARD CONCEPT
Reports from the northern hemisphere show that Yamaha and SEMA are working to promote sustainable fuels and blunt electric vehicle momentum.
It might seem curious to find Yamaha Marine exhibiting its H2 hydrogen concept at an automotive trade show, but the outboard manufacturer has an alternative fuels ally in the Specialty Equipment Market Association. Yamaha and its partners, Regulator Marine and Roush, exhibited the H2 hydrogen-powered propulsion concept in the FutureTech Studio section of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas last November.
In the FutureTech Studio, Yamaha displayed the same cutaway Regulator 26XO and Yamaha XTO Offshore outboard — each modified to accommodate a hydrogen power system developed by Roush — which debuted as the H2 concept at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2024.
Following the debut of the H2 concept last February, Yamaha stated that it would spend the coming boating

MERCURY ENGINES ARE MADE FOR EXPLORING. SO ARE YOU. GO BOLDLY.
The Silent Bow-Thruster
‘You shouldn’t use the bow thruster,’ said my yachtie friends. ‘You’llgetdependenton itandthenoneday, itwon’tworkandyou’ll be in trouble.’
Iignored their advice because yachties don’t understand that at slow speeds, my launch wafts around like a leaf in the breeze, in which case the bow thruster is useful, and because it wouldn't happen to me.
That was especially important because recently I’ve moved to a new, 10m berth, narrower than my luxurious but expensive 12-metre berth. Not only is it narrower, but the finger is on the port side when I reverse into the new berth, which means it is basically invisible from the helm. All this was keeping me awake at night so I’d put myself through a learning process to ensure I had safe landings.
My first lesson didn’t go well. Neither did my second. Or maybe they did help because on my third lesson, I nailed it, albeit in a considerate northerly breeze. I developed a plan: halt the boat just as I reach my berth, put helm hard to port, apply throttle to make the turn, keep the helm hard over in reverse to continue the spin… then use the bow thruster to stop the spin and control steerage as I reverse into the berth. The plan relied on the bow thruster.
New Year’s Eve: the dreaded sou-easterly whipped gusts down the fairway marina, meaning that I had to get it right first time. I stuck with the plan, but started further upwind than usual to allow for the gusts.
The plan worked until the bow thruster didn’t. I was still trying to figure out why the boat wasn’t responding as it should when my crew started yelling: ‘No! No! No!’ Her meaning was clear: ‘Do the exact opposite of whatever you’re doing now.’
I managed to power out of trouble without getting into more trouble, but now what? I tried to get back to my starting position but couldn’t get the bow up into the wind before I had to back off to avoid boats on the other side of the fairway. I tried more throttle. I still have a memory of looking over my left shoulder to see a row of pointy bows lined up on my port side. Yikes. Still not sure how I got out of that one.
Eventually we wriggled and drifted our way downwind into the main fairway, which was wonderfully empty of other boats. We headed for open water to regroup and decided to make another attempt at berthing, this time in the knowledge that it would be without a bow thruster. I would love to say I planned what happened next, but I think I just got lucky. We ended up laying across the fairway, upwind of my berth, so we drifted down with the breeze and somehow timed it right to reverse in. After that, I needed a cup of tea and a lie down.
Bow thrusters for small launches comprise three basic elements: a battery-powered electric motor, a gearbox to move the bow to either port or starboard, and a propeller. If any of those malfunctions, there is probably no immediate fix, unless it’s to reset the circuit breaker.
Ben McDonald of Seafarer Marine Engineering in Picton said the most likely scenario was that the bow thruster’s propeller blades had sheared off after hitting an object in the water. A stuffed gearbox was the worst scenario, cost-wise, but unlikely. We knew
My bow-thruster after the propeller blades had been sheared off. No wonder it didn't work!
the electric motor was still working because it whirred when I engaged the bow thruster toggle.
A week later, I had the boat lifted and a quick glance showed that all the blades were sheared off. Seafarer Marine Engineering had it repaired and the boat back in the water the next day.
So, lessons learned? If a bow thruster fails, it is highly unlikely it can be repaired in the next five minutes, so it pays to have Plan B: how to remain clear of obstacles while you plan your next move.
Always test your bow thruster on final approach to your marina berth. This also ensures it won’t automatically time out.
Use your bow thruster; it helps to keep the blades clean but use only in short bursts. Always pause for at least two seconds when switching from one direction to the other, so you don’t stress the motor.
Visually check the bow thruster every time the boat is lifted: look for wear on the propeller or tunnel. Some bow thrusters have anodes.
Inside the boat, ensure the electric motor remains dry and free of salt corrosion, and doesn’t over-heat. It is normal for the toggle control to get warm.
Read your bow thruster’s maintenance manual to check for specific maintenance recommendations.
Occasionally, berth without the bow thruster to practice how your boat handles without it. Just don’t tell your yachtie friends.

Marine Brokerage: Buying and Selling
The quote re ‘Thebestdaysofownershiparethedayyoubuyandthedayyousell ’ didn’t reckon for another problem your poor broker has to handle. This is negotiating for the buyer who wants an essentially brand-new boat for less than a second-hand price. While this is not unusual in itself, some buyers will go to uncompromising extremes, which can be a wee bit unfair on some vendors and can give your broker a stressful workout.
One memorable example was a client who viewed a (then) modern cruiser/racer with me. These craft were renowned for developing Osmosis. I doubt if there was one built that did not suffer ‘boat pox’ to some degree. This craft had osmosis which was declared at the first introduction, being April 30, 19.. . It should also be noted that the purchasers were made aware that the vendor had a genuine and timely need to sell. A first right of refusal was granted while ruminating on the Osmosis problem. A contract was signed and a deposit was taken on 25th May after much protracted negotiations based on what might be. The purchasers then requested an extension on the contract’s time/performance requirements, so subsequently, the survey finally took place on 14th July. Consequent to survey, demands for a completely rebuilt bottom were made if the buyers were to continue. With the vendor committed, an agreement was reached on this also.
The survey was signed off, and a sea trial finally took place on 7th August. This craft had been a well campaigned racer in her time, and the vendor had a huge number of new and older sails, all noted on the inventory. Our purchasers, on what was
a reasonably windy day, demanded to see every one of them up, including an old mainsail. The would-be buyers never left the cockpit and did not relinquish their grip on the helm. The sea trial was accepted, and the boat was hauled on 22nd August for her bottom job. This was back in the days when Osmosis was exposed, washed and left to dry before the next steps were taken: no heaters, dehumidifiers or planing bad surfaces off. Within a week, the buyers were requesting the vendor pay for their surveyor to ‘oversee’ the repairs, but this was settled without too much grief. Finally on the 22nd November the purchasers settled, a 7 month saga during which time I do not think the buyers smiled once. To give them credit, they must have wanted the boat as they did conclude the deal, but ironically, a year later they came back demanding a new spinnaker which they heard had been built for the boat prior to sale, but was not on the inventory.... some buyers are never happy.
Another type of buyer is the ‘hunter’. I had one client to whom I sold 7 boats over a time, including one of my own, and one other he bought twice. This man delighted in looking for his next boat. He was prepared to travel considerable distances in search of his next ‘I want’. Once we had
found the next craft that fitted the wish list, he would step back and let his very competent wife handle the finer points of negotiation, signing, and payments.
Once the purchase was complete, interest seemingly waned. I personally delivered 4 of his boats North, and brought them back to Auckland to sell again. One he sailed as far as Kawau Bay before turning around and taking it back for resale (not my deal!). One of our early deals consisted of trading up to my own John Lidgard designed 36’er, by way of a Kevin Lidgard designed 33’ and some cash. This yacht had been built by the top-class boat builder, now noted designer, Bill Upfold, for himself and was a stunning wee craft. We swapped boats at the halfway point, Mansion House Bay, where we killed a few brain cells, and consequently, I forgot to tell him about the overflow tap for the diesel tank when on port tack, and he forgot to tell me about a broken keel bolt. Nowadays, suable offences! Yachting legend, John Lidgard, (a member of our private yacht club, the HGCTA) commented when I first rocked up in Legionnaire to one of our many AMMs (Annual Monthly Meetings); “What are you doing in that, Phil, it’s way too good for you”. I took that as an indication that I was moving in the right direction!
Another sale was a very well-built and spec’d 36 Vindex, which I delivered to Tutukaka, and subsequently returned unused to Auckland 8 months later, and on sold. This was replaced with a beautiful wee Al Williams 33, which was then sold and the Vindex repurchased. He moved further North, and then way South, and we lost contact, but I know he was still buying and selling. A genuinely top bloke.
THAI SEAFOOD CURRY
Ingredients
200gm Pad Thai noodles or substitute steamed jasmine rice
250gm thick white fish (Monk Fish, Hapuka)
250gm whole prawns
12 NZ clams in shell
4 tbsp red Thai curry paste (divided)
2 tbsp Cocavo coconut oil
½ medium onion (finely diced)
2 tbsp ginger (finely minced)
3 cloves garlic (finely minced)
330 ml can coconut cream
½ cup water
1 tbsp fish sauce
1 tbsp coconut or brown sugar
Rice flour for dusting
4 cups chopped veggies (pictured are beans, carrots, red bell peppers)
Minced coriander
Grilled lime rounds or wedges and lime juice
Sesame seeds (to serve)
Salt & pepper for seasoning
Method
Cook the noodles as per the instructions on the packet, add 2-3 tbsp of curry sauce and set aside. If using jasmine rice, steam and set aside.
For the Curry
1. Cut the fish into bite size pieces. Dry the fish with a paper towel then brush with 1 tbsp of the curry paste and dust with rice flour.
2. Heat the oil in a large pot or wok over medium-high heat. Gently fry the fish, remove from the pan and set aside. (Fish should be opaque in the middle as will finish in the sauce).
3. Fry the cockles until just opened, remove from the pan and set aside.
4. Fry the prawns until pink in colour, remove from the pan and set aside.
5. Add a little more coconut oil to the pan then add in the onion, ginger, and garlic and cook until fragrant, about 5 minutes.
6. Add the remaining curry paste, coconut cream, water, fish sauce, and sugar.
7. Add the veggies and bring the pot to a boil.
8. Reduce the heat to medium-low and return the fish, cockles and prawns. Cover the pot and cook for 5 minutes.
To serve
Place the noodles (or rice) into the middle of the plate, arrange the seafood and vegetables over top top and lap with Curry sauce. Garnish with coriander sprigs.
CHEFS TIP: Serve with a squeeze of lime juice or lime wedges on the side.
Pairing perfectly...
The crisp and refreshing profile of Florals by Anchorage Sauvignon Blanc beautifully complements the Thai seafood curry’s bold and aromatic flavours. Its bright acidity cuts through the richness of the coconut cream, while the zesty citrus notes and subtle herbal undertones harmonise with the lime. The wine’s tropical fruit flavours, such as passionfruit and guava, enhance the sweetness of the seafood, creating a balanced and vibrant pairing.
It’s been three years in the making, with a collaboration between the Riviera design group and superyacht designer Luca Vallebona. The much anticipated 6800 Platinum Edition is now the new, and very worthy, flagship of Riviera’s four model Sport Yacht Collection.
BY KYLE BARNES
The massive aft deck area and huge adaptable lounge all reflect superyacht design.
At just 73-feet, it really is amazing how easily a yacht of this size can be handled – even one-up.
REFINEMENT
The question I have, is how do you keep coming up with such innovative ideas after creating your 6000th motor yacht and over 100 individual models in 45 years of operation? Ideas always being refined; envelopes pushed and a brand that stands out as one of the leaders around the world. I guess you head to the factory, where all the magic happens. Riviera’s Brand and Communications Director, Stephen Milne said the 6800 had been created after extensive consultation with some of Riviera’s most experienced yacht owners around the world. Then the highly credentialed Riviera design group all worked together and in partnership with Lucca Vallebona, conceptualising, designing, detailing and documenting this new yacht using the most sophisticated computer aided design systems.
Precision 5-axis routers were then used to cut mould plugs and parts and then Riviera’s senior boat builders were empowered to bring this concept to brilliant life. All of this took more that 45,000 man hours of
research and development over three years. As Stephen says: “Our team relish each new design opportunity as this allows them to evolve, challenge, refine and create something different and better.”
THE HULL
Watching a new 6800 hull being laminated is fascinating. It starts with the isophthalic gelcoat being applied to the mould followed by fibreglass matting, longitudinal and transverse stiffeners, different cores, engine bearers, steel and aluminium fixing plates and pod rings all digitally pre-cut and numbered for their exact location, are dry-fitted in accordance with the Riviera engineers lamination schedule. When the entire hull framework is complete, the mould is bagged, placed in a negative vacuum and vinyl ester based resin is infused into the entire structure all at the same time. This leading edge technology creates an immensely strong, consistent part that is a completely bonded single structure, that has weight saving and positive environmental advantages which creates a hull that will take anything the sea throws at it. This same infusion process is applied to the deck and the myriad of small parts.
THE SHAKEDOWN
After several visits to Riviera’s Gold Coast-based factory watching various stages of the build, I headed off for a sea trial with Dean Brickell, Riviera’s Final Quality Control & Sea Trials Manager. Dean was among a team, of engineers, designers and senior boat builders who took hull number one out for its
‘barebones’ testing, undertaken before the interior was fitted, which I must admit sounded like a lot of fun. “We waited for a two-metre-plus swell day, where we ran the yacht hard into the swell, across and with the swell, falling off waves at high speeds,” said Dean. Basically, we ran the yacht the way an owner would never do, but we wanted to test the yacht and to push the yacht to its limits. What we determined was that the hull was supremely strong, nothing moved and there was no cracking. This severe testing was a huge success and was a testament to our team’s ability.”
JOYSTICK BOAT HANDLING
I arrive at the Runaway Bay Marina dock, as pre-arranged, but there is no yacht. Dean had moved the 6800 to another berth – solo – and he made it look so very easy. I watched as he reversed down a fairway, bordered by boats on one side and rocks on the other, and as he pulled up, he engaged the Dynamic Positioning System, keeping the yacht steady while he got the lines and fenders ready. The final piece of docking was a gentle move sideways where the yacht just kissed the dock. At 79’9” length overall, it really is amazing how easily a yacht this size can be handled – even one-up. And while she does look imposing from the dock, it is her wonderfully balanced engineering and the joystick control that gives you the confidence and feeling of being in total control, particularly in tight quarters when you have wind and currents to contend with.
SEA TRIAL
Dean and I took the 6800 out for a run on the Broadwater and I must say the Dynamic Positioning System is just incredible. We cleared the tight channel, engaged the DPS and the yacht took over, holding us perfectly, while we were busy readying for sea. It’s the same with the trim tabs, Humphree fins, thrusters and engines – they all work together to hold you steady and upright either at rest or underway. The run up through the Broadwater is not really a sea trial for something of this size, although its cornering capabilities shine with very little to no heel on a full lock turn at 27 knots. Not a drop of my coffee was spilt.
FAIRLY SLOPPY CONDITIONS
Time to head out through the seaway with fairly sloppy conditions, a mix of a moderate northeast wind and around a metre and a half of easterly swell. We clipped along at 27 knots at 2200RPM with a fuel burn of 10 litres per nautical mile total, pretty incredible for the 40-plus tonnes (including fuel) we were pushing through the water. With the windows and doors closed, the
The instrumentation at the generously sized helm is uncluttered and well laid out.
Opposite the helm, is a lounge that converts into a daybed with the same view as the skipper.

enhancing its luxury..”
At the touch of a button, the boarding platform lowers into the water. The impressive tender garage is devoted to all water sports.
A pair of fully adjustable sun pads on the foredeck lounge offers a relaxing space both at anchor and underway.

ride is almost surreal. It’s dry, effortless and despite the speed there is no engine, grinding hull or fitting movements, meaning you can happily chat away in a normal voice. Back to the Broadwater and we docked, maybe shoehorned is a better word, into an inside berth at Marina Mirage. Again, plenty of time to get things prepared and come in quietly regardless of the conditions. A couple can easily handle this yacht.
THE BOARDING PLATFORM
My 6800 experience begins with the large boarding platform and there’s nothing ordinary here. At the touch of a button, it lowers into the water and at the same time breaks into four well-positioned and generous sized steps. And in a following sea, you can raise the platform up, from its normal horizontal position to a metre or so off the water.
THE BEACH CLUB
There is a garage in the transom large enough to house an optional 3.8-metre amphibious tender. The tender has three drop-down drive wheels allowing for a dry landing on the beach. The tender is launched
and retrieved via a track and roller wheel mechanism which slides out and attaches onto the platform. In the garage there’s also a fully integrated compressor for the tender and all your inflatable water toys. When at anchor, with the tender and toys all deployed and the garage door raised, this area becomes a beach club with a roof over the swim platform providing shade protection and there’s even a rain shower to wash the salt off. Fantastic. Adjacent to the tender garage door, is a second door in the transom that provides direct access to the engine room allowing service technicians or captain access. The engine room forward door opens into the optional captain or crew quarters, equipped with a wet head, small galley and a single berth on top of the washing machine and dryer. There are two locked and soundproofed doors located between the crew cabin and the master stateroom. This cabin can also be optioned as a laundry with a walk-in robe in the master connecting the two.
THE ENGINE ROOM
In typical Riviera fashion, the engine room is well laid and thought out. A pair of Volvo Penta D13 IPS 1350’s are located under the tender garage and each
generates 1000 horsepower fed by the 4500-litre fuel tank further forward in the yacht. The dipsticks and coolant are all very accessible, with plenty of room around them. I love a well labelled engine room and here it is. Everything can be traced back to fault find. There’s also a 22.5-kilowatt primary generator and a secondary generator delivering 11-kilowatts.
INSPIRATION
Superyachts have clearly inspired many of the 6800’s innovations, this in part is due to the design partnership between the Riviera design group and superyacht designer Luca Vallebona. Rope boxes are cleverly hidden under the cleats tailing ropes away and out of sight. The massive aft deck and hugely adaptable foredeck lounge both offer extensive seating capacity and all reflect superyacht thinking with their scale, amenity and attention to detail. The rich teak used around the cleats, on the decks and inserted into the steps on the side decks where the deck height changes so these steps can be seen in the glare of the sun, are all beautiful and practical. On the aft deck opposite the port side lounge/dining area there is an outdoor galley with ample bench space complete with two drawer fridges, an icemaker, sink, rubbish bin and a double plate BBQ with a clever extractor system.
INNOVATIONS
Moving into the galley, which is separated from the outdoors by a sliding glass door and saloon window which can be lowered at the touch of a button, is everything you would expect from Riviera’s luxury yachts. Ample bench space, premium appliances, full-height fridge with a superbly appointed wet bar opposite complete with wine fridge. And there are more innovations. The dining area features a table that can be quickly folded back into the lounge by

This then transforms this space into a more casual lounge area or into an inviting family daybed courtesy of two moveable ottomans where a 65” LED TV rises up from the cabinetry apposite to starboard to create a full Gold Class theatre experience. In front of this TV cabinet is a further lounge facing the C-shaped dining area.
Further forward on the port side and opposite the helm is a third lounge that is L-shaped and allows guests to all converse when underway and share the skippers view. One of the moveable ottomans can be placed here to also turn this lounge into a daybed for longer passages.
The helm is a well-considered station with twin fully adjustable, electric leather helm chairs, with the mate’s chair turning 180 degrees to become part of the conversation when at anchor. To the right of the helm is a console that has the thruster, joystick and throttle controls along with the windscreen wipers and the grid controller for the three 19” Glass Bridge screens. These all fall easily to hand which is great at sea. Studying the controls further, I find a button on the dash which operates the two side electric windows, these close by rising up on tracks and then move outward to seal out the elements. Amazing engineering.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Down a small flight of stairs, I find the accommodation deck with a generous forward VIP guest stateroom with ensuite, a portside twin single or at the push of a button it transforms into a double bed stateroom with en-suite access to the shared day head. To starboard there is further accommodation with the fourth cabin offering two large crossover

Not only from the boat owners perspective, but as a locally owned and operated company that truly investing in its people, technology and its future. Last year the company opened the Riviera Academy of Excellence, their own in-house apprentice training facility which is now training some 150 apprentices.
SUMMARY
The Riviera 6800 Sport Yacht has been beautifully designed as a go anywhere blue water sport yacht with grand proportions. But it’s all about family with this motor yacht. The 6800 is obviously perfect for a longrange adventure with its excellent accommodation options and the impressive tender garage devoted to all manner of water sports. However the thing that really struck me was that it has so many separate entertaining areas that family groups, friends and couples can all be together or find their own space. When you slide open the saloon door and lower the electric galley window the massive aft deck flows inside creating one grand living, entertaining and relaxing space with two separate dining areas. But the 6800 certainly doesn’t need a family to handle her thanks to the ease of boating systems that Riviera has engineered into this exceptional yacht. She can be simply and easily handled in tight quarters with no stress by a couple following a Riviera captains training course.

One boat model – three engine options.
With special thanks to the Tristram Marine Team - who supplied us with three Tristram 821 Offshore models, each powered by a different propulsion option - we were able to get out on Auckland Harbour and report on a showdown between the MerCruiser 270hp 3.0L V6 Diesel Sterndrive, the Twin Mercury 250hp V8 Verado outboards, and the Single Yamaha 450hp V8 XTO outboard. Each setup offers distinct advantages, particularly in fuel efficiency, maintenance, and performance. After a day on Auckland Harbour, we discovered how these three compared against each other.
“...improved efficiency, lower emissions, and reduced operating costs.”
The MerCruiser 3.0L V6 Sterndrive Diesel engine is designed to balance power, efficiency, and reliability. This compact yet powerful V6 diesel engine delivers 270 horsepower and offers smooth cruising performance while maintaining fuel efficiency.
One of the standout features of this engine is its modern common-rail direct fuel injection system, which optimises fuel delivery for improved efficiency, lower emissions, and reduced operating costs. Combined with a turbocharged and aftercooled design, the engine ensures strong torque output across a broad RPM range, making it well-suited for leisure and commercial vessels.
The MerCruiser 3.0L V6 has improved engineering for quieter and refined operation on previous models, featuring advanced sounddampening technologies that minimise noise and vibration. Its closed-loop cooling system enhances durability by preventing exposure to corrosive seawater, extending engine life and reducing maintenance requirements.
Power: 270 hp
Configuration: Single sterndrive diesel
Fuel Efficiency: Diesel engines typically excel in fuel efficiency, especially at mid-range RPMs, which is ideal for long-distance cruising.
Weight: Generally heavier than the outboard options, but the weight is centrally located, sometimes assisting stability.
Maintenance: Diesel engines are generally longer-lasting but require more intensive servicing.
Performance: Excellent low-end torque, making it ideal for heavy loads and rougher waters. However, it does lack the top-end speed of single and dual outboard configurations.
Ideal For: Offering torque for heavy loads, prioritising fuel economy when travelling to distance fishing grounds and then trolling for many hours. Most of the Tristram Diesel sterndrives sold to date have been for fishing, where trolling fuel burn is an important consideration. From these figures, we can see an excellent range at low speeds; at a trolling speed of about 8.6 knots, the sterndrive can cover 499 nautical miles using less than one litre of diesel per nautical mile.
The MerCruiser sterndrive option also offers a clean transom and can be better suited for some hull designs.
TWIN MERCURY 250HP V8 VERADO OUTBOARDS
Two 4.6L V8 petrol engines
Outboard configuration
VS
“... a versatile, well-rounded outboard that offers a seamless blend of power, comfort, and innovation.”
The Mercury 250hp V8 Verado outboard engine is designed to balance power, efficiency, and smooth operation. Built around a 4.6L V8 powerhead, it provides strong acceleration and exceptional mid-range performance while maintaining the quiet, refined operation that the Verado range is known for.
One of the 250hp Verado's standout features is its Advanced MidSection (AMS), which significantly reduces vibration and noise, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable ride. This makes it an excellent choice for boaters, as it provides a quiet and refined experience without sacrificing power.
The twin outboard 821 Offshore option can be spec’d with electric joystick steering. This feature will allow for ease of manoeuvring into jetties. The joystick also features a spot lock option that will hold the vessel on the spot for deep drop fishing, adding to convenience and safety.
Designed for both performance and reliability, the 250hp Verado features dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) for increased efficiency and durability. It also boasts a lightweight design, ensuring an optimal power-to-weight ratio for improved fuel efficiency and top-end speed.
Whether used for offshore adventures, cruising, or fishing, the Mercury 250hp V8 Verado is a versatile, well-rounded outboard that offers a seamless blend of power, comfort, and innovation.
Power: 500 hp (combined)
Configuration: Twin outboards
Fuel Efficiency: Outboards are less fuel-efficient than diesel sterndrives, but advancements in Mercury Verado engines offer improved fuel economy.
Weight: This setup adds more weight to the stern, but it provides redundancy if one engine fails.
Maintenance: Outboards are easier to maintain than sterndrives, with more straightforward access and fewer components below deck.
Performance: The twin Verado setup offers high top-end speed and excellent handling, especially for sport-oriented boating and fast acceleration out of the hole.
Ideal For: Performance-oriented boaters prioritising speed, easier maintenance and redundancy should you run into trouble.
VS
SINGLE YAMAHA 450HP V8 XTO OUTBOARD
One 5.6L V8 petrol engine
Outboard configuration
“The high-power single outboard option was the lightest power option with great top-end speed of 48 knots.”
Yamaha has introduced the XTO Offshore 450, an evolution of its flagship XTO 425, delivering enhanced performance and modern convenience. Retaining the robust 5.6L big block displacement and many features of its predecessor, the XTO 450 builds on an already impressive platform.
The Phase Angle Control Charging System is a key upgrade, providing three-phase, simultaneous charging that generates more net amps at low RPM. This is ideal for powering high-demand devices like gyro stabilisers and air conditioning systems.
Yamaha’s TotalTilt™ system adds to the engine's usability, allowing faster and easier tilting with a simple double-press of the tilt button. Meanwhile, the cowling now features raised chrome graphics and refined panels, giving the engine a sleek, premium aesthetic.
Yamaha has introduced new propellers for different vessel types, including the XTO EC® Prop for heavy boats and a 27-inch pitch prop for lighter vessels seeking higher speeds.
The Yamaha 450hp engine can be optioned with the all-new Yamaha Helm Master. This new option features a single engine joystick, allowing for maintaining a position for fishing or even integrating into a bow thruster for ease of docking. The next Tristram 821 Offshore single engine currently in build has the Yamaha Helm Master/Bow thruster integration fitted.
The XTO Offshore 450 is the premium choice in Yamaha’s outboard line-up.
Power: 450 hp
Configuration: Single outboard
Fuel Efficiency: More fuel efficient at lower speeds than the twin outboard option and performs well at cruising speeds.
Weight: The single-engine setup is lighter than the Diesel Sterndrive and twin outboard configurations, allowing for less stern-heavy weight distribution.
Maintenance: Outboards are generally easy to maintain, and the Yamaha XTO is known for its reliability.
Performance: The high-power single outboard option was the lightest power option with great top-end speed of 48 knots.
Ideal For: Those looking for high speed in a lighter, more straightforward setup. Providing high power in a single unit can be preferable for some boat designs with a more straightforward, singleengine setup. The single-engine boarding platform on the Tristram 821 Offshore matched with the Yamaha 450hp is unique with large swim/ fishing platforms on either side of the engine. This added real estate makes for a generous area for many activities.
THE NUMBERS, KEY FEATURES & PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS:
Power Output
MerCruiser: 270hp (single engine)
Mercury: 500hp total (250hp x 2)
• Yamaha: 450hp (single engine)
The twin Mercury setup offers the highest total horsepower, followed by the Yamaha, then the MerCruiser.
Fuel Efficiency
The MerCruiser diesel engine offers the best fuel efficiency, especially at cruising speeds.
Mercury Verado outboards are designed for efficiency, with features like Advanced Range Optimization (ARO)
The larger displacement Yamaha 450hp V8 XTO outboard offers a balance of high performance and fuel efficiency, particularly when operated at moderate cruising speeds.
Noise and Vibration
The Mercury Verado outboards feature an Advanced MidSection (AMS) that isolates vibration and reduces noise. This technology, combined with their V8 configuration, makes them exceptionally quiet; there also has to be something said of any twin-rigged boat; the harmonics offer something just a little pleasing to the ear.
The diesel MerCruiser, which was reasonably quiet at idle, was undoubtedly noisier than the outboard options, particularly at lower speeds when getting up on the plane. However, once at cruising speed, the diesel noise level aligned more closely with that of the outboard options. Today's MerCruiser diesel engine has advanced significantly from the often nicknamed ‘coal burner’ diesel of the past, showing improvements in both exhaust noise and emissions.
Yamaha has used their Advanced Mounting System on the 450hp V8 XTO outboard; these are upgraded engine mounts and an improved exhaust routing to minimise vibrations. The engine felt smooth through the rev range, particularly at cruising speeds.
Maintenance and Serviceability
Mercury Verado outboards offer easy maintenance with features like an easy-access door for oil checks.
• Again, the Yamaha Outboard configuration allows easier access and servicing.
The MerCruiser sterndrive requires more complex maintenance due to its inboard nature.
Fuel Type
MerCruiser: Diesel fuel
Mercury Verado: Petrol 87 Octane
Yamaha XTO: Petrol 95-98 Octane
Boat and Engine Weight
(at the time of testing):
MerCruiser 270hp 3.0L V6 Diesel Sterndrive: 2.917 Ton Twin Mercury 250hp V8 Verado outboards: 2.986 Ton (combined)
Pricing varies with currency and exchange rate fluctuations and how engine manufacturers package the engines with different gauges, propellers, and associated electronics. There are also varying boat build expenses and price differences between outboard and stern drive options. There was a $25,000 difference between the most and least expensive options at the time of printing (the highest being the twin outboard and least expensive being the diesel package). This price difference of $25,000 would be less of a consideration than selecting the right engine type for the intended boating activity or boat ramp depth available.
• Single Yamaha 450hp V8 XTO outboard: $1,300 approx. SCAN THE CODE TO WATCH THE VIDEO
CONCLUSION - HORSES FOR COURSES…
What is weighted as a priority to one power boatie may differ from another - fuel burn versus performance is always a significant consideration. The fuel results from our day out were largely as expected: the sterndrive offered the best fuel economy, while the outboard options were less efficient - especially when factoring in the higher cost of petrol compared to diesel. However, as mentioned, it’s not always about fuel consumption; for some, performance, which the outboard options deliver, takes priority over economy.
With all the weights, fuel consumption, and performance figures considered, your choice between these setups ultimately depends on your boating requirementswhether it's high-speed performance with the Mercury Verado twins, long-distance reliability and economy with the MerCruiser diesel, or a powerful, straightforward Yamaha XTO outboard.
One constant is that the more horsepower you have and the more you use it, the more fuel you will burn.
The final decision depends not only on which engine style best suits your hull design, as both outboard and sterndrive setups have their advantages, but also on the type of boating activity that fuels your passion. Boat ramp depths can also be a contributing factor to a purchase decision. The sterndrive will draw more than the outboard. Therefore, an outboard option could be a wise decision on shallow boat ramps. Whether it’s offshore fishing, cruising with a focus on economy, or high-speed water sports, this will determine the ideal power choice for your boating lifestyle.
THE SHOOTOUT VEHICLE: THE TRISTRAM 821 OFFSHORE
A special thank you to the Tristram Marine Team, who helped make this article possible. The supply of three Tristram 821 Offshore models, each equipped with a different propulsion option, is greatly appreciated – we went out looking for a typical hard top model to be the donor boat to allow us to complete this task – in saying that – there is certainly nothing average about the Tristram 821 Offshore, far from it in fact.
The Tristram 821 Offshore, conceived in 2020, was an entirely new design for the company that took two years to deliver the finished product. Unlike some manufacturers that modify an existing model, the 821 was designed by Tristram Marine, using Computer Aided Design (CAD) with foam plugs made for the hull, deck, superstructure and all the various moulds. The CAD system’s accuracies are within 0.0025mm.
The Tristram 821 Offshore is more than a magnificent boat for entertaining; it is designed primarily to go serious fishing. However, you don’t have to have builtin tuna tubes, game poles, electric reel connections, or tackle drawers, as the 821 is available with a more family cruiser-based layout.
The 821 is available in twin or single outboards up to 600hp or diesel sterndrive. When you offer two power types, outboard and sterndrive, there will be some variances in the transom design. The usual method is two different transom moulds. However, not so Tristram Marine. Tristram has two deck moulds. So you don’t see any joining
lines between the transom moulding and the coamings.
The 821 hull has extra wide downturned chines, with a 21deg vee at the transom. Thanks to a deep keel, the boat tracks perfectly and goes precisely where you point it. It holds its bow up nicely in a steep following sea, and you don’t have any wavering or issues with broaching. Trim tabs are built into the hull, so there is no obtrusion off the transom. The 2.78m beam offers generous space within and outstanding stability, which we experienced on our day out on the water.
Speaking with Kingsley Fink, General Manager of Tristram Marine, 57 Tristram 821 Offshore boats have been produced to date, with 70% of these featuring the diesel sterndrive configuration, typically chosen by game fishermen and families who venture far offshore. However, the twin outboard option is also becoming popular among owners who appreciate the security of having a backup engine in case of unforeseen circumstances.
Additionally, there has been a growing preference for the extra deck space that a
sterndrive offers around the transom, but with slightly enhanced performance. This is where Tristram Marine collaborated closely with Yamaha and now offers a single Yamaha outboard option. Other available single outboard options include the Yamaha 450 four-stroke V8 outboard and the 600hp Mercury V12.
The Tristram 821 Offshore is built from an impeccable heritage and puts a new perspective on trailer boat luxury.

The New Innovision IV656 Explorer, with its plumb bow and high bow shear contribute to an exceptionally smooth, dry ride and overall seaworthiness.
When a boat builder names his company Innovision, you immediately get the sense that he is pursuing something evolutionary and different. When I first heard the name, two notions sprang immediately to mind: Innovation and Vision. Simply defined ‘Innovation’ is a new solution for something that has a high demand or an unmet need. The best way to think about what is innovative is simply; “Why didn’t I think of that?” ‘Vision’ is the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination and wisdom - definitions which aptly sum up the new Innovision IV656 Explorer.
BY RON CZERNIAK, MARINE JOURNALIST
Earlier this year, the team at Pacific PowerBoat Magazine asked me to undertake a sea test and report on the new Innovision IV656 Explorer.
I confess that at the time, although I was aware of this boat building company, I really didn’t know a lot about them, even though they had been around for over a decade. So, in preparation for writing this article, I started scrolling the internet regarding Innovision and their products. First immediate impression? “Well, these boats are certainly different from most other trailer boats currently on the market”. As I continued to scan their website, I became more and more excited about getting out on the first of Innovision’s “Latest Generation” IV656 Explorers.
The actual vessel we tested was only launched in early January and Grant, the owner of this new craft, had barely clocked up several hours prior to us taking the boat out of Mangawhai Inlet, situated about 100 km north of Auckland’s CBD, for this boat test review. A few days before we were due to get out on the water there had been a north easterly storm in the region and even though the day before the test the wind had changed to a sou’wester, by the time we got out to sea in the afternoon, a moderate northly wind had clocked in making for a very confused and lumpy ocean. However, it turned out to be a gorgeous sunny day and fortuitously the weather gods provided
ideal test conditions, enabling us to put this unique craft through its trials in the resultant rough seas off Mangawhai Beach.
But before we talk about our time out on the water, a bit about Innovision and specifically the first of their “Latest Generation” IV656 Explorers - ‘Nauti North’.
THE BUILDER AND THE BOAT:
Innovision Boats pride themselves on constantly looking for improvements in their designs. In discussions with Simon (Director) and Vicky (Business and Marketing Manager) it became quickly apparent that design evolution is core to Innovision’s philosophy, and they made it clear that it takes commitment and investment to deliver better on water performance, safety and the ultimate boating experience for their customers. Innovision believe the latest 656 Explorer design changes will ensure their new IV656 Explorer is the best all round 6.5m trailer boat on the market, delivering exceptional stability and performance, maximum internal space, and a contemporary, but uniquely stylish shape.
So, what are these IV656 changes and how beneficial are they when it comes to making the craft “fit for purpose” as well as living up to the company’s “as promoted” vision?
When you first see the IV656 Explorer the two distinct features that immediately
emblazon themselves in your mind are the plumb bow combined with the impressively raised bow height. You certainly get the impression that this craft is meant for business.
Breaking It Down: The raised bow height leads to a smoother transition into the newly developed shear line, offering an increased flare for a drier and more stable ride in rough conditions. In addition, extending the foredeck over the flared bow side sheets by half a metre, better deflects the waves in extreme conditions. With more flare around the helm bulkhead, it not only looks better, but it also helps when running in rough conditions, improving overall stability, comfort, and handling.
In brief, the longer waterline length improves ride and performance with the finer plumb bow entry reducing pitching and slamming. In addition, the higher bow with more volume ensures safer bar crossings while the extra length at the transom gives added stability at rest.
That’s the performance side, but it is obvious that a boat must also look good and although I acknowledge that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, aesthetics’ are important factors when it comes to one’s buying decision. Being a firm believer in “form follows function,” to me the IV656 fits the bill.
The helm station is well designed, simple and easy to use.
Ron discovers that the uniquely high bow shear and plumb bow contribute to impressive seaworthiness.
An extremely comfortable forward cabin with extra space created by the plumb bow for overnighting
Discretely installed electric toilet fits functionally under the removeable centre bunk squab.
Split lid, pull out chilly bins provide additional seating when withdrawn half way out.
Appearance and Function: The streamlined new shearline gives the craft a softer more contemporary look, embodying Innovision’s dedication to both aesthetics and performance, while offering a timeless appearance which will endure well into the future. The quality of workmanship is unrivalled and if one wants to focus on but one example, look at the welding. So smoothly done that a final grinding down or finishing is largely unnecessary. But, good looks be damned, the formidable bow design aspect screams, “Bring it on!”
The new larger forepeak and hard top cabin offers a higher roof height (1950mm at the helm position) and can be customised to individual customer height requirements, providing additional cabin workspace and storage and allowing for a 1.85m V-berth, which is more than adequate for overnighting when required. At the same time, the roof rod holders are now 75mm lower, making it easier to get rods in and out of the holders.
The transom wall has been moved aft by 50mm, so that the Portofino transom (a design where the transom is extended with a large swim platform, often incorporating a step-down feature for easy access to the water) is the perfect size for one person to fish off whilst still allowing enough space to cross in front of the engine to the other side. This also increases the cockpit space ensuring that captain, crew, and guests have ample room for on water activities – especially fishing and diving (note the sturdy port and starboard, swing down, three rung boarding ladders), while the length overall (LOA) has been increased to 6.65 metres.
The cockpit on ‘Nauti North’ is similar to a standard IV656 but has been thoughtfully laid out to Grant’s
specific requirements in several respects. For example, the seats and seating configuration consists of two Relaxn Mako Series Adjustable Swivel Seats with under seat, slide out, split lid Icey-Tek 90l chilly bins. The list goes on. I am an ardent believer in the “KISS” (Keep It Simple Stupid) philosophy when it comes to design and function and there are many subtle features hiding in plain sight in the IV656’s cockpit. Listing but a few (see also the accompanying images), the drop down port and starboard stern washboard panels (preventing water coming into the cockpit when backing into a sea), the convenient cabin shelves running port and starboard, allowing you to rest your forearm while underway, the numerous rod and cup holders on both port and starboard cockpit gunwales, the sturdy Portofino transom safety ‘cages’, etc. etc.
THE SEA TRIAL:
Background: I rendezvoused with the owner of Innovision’s first ‘latest version’ IV656 Explorer, ‘Nauti North’ at the Mangawhai Inlet boat ramp late in January, eager to get out on and experience this somewhat revolutionary new alloy boat. Grant is a seasoned and experienced seafarer – both recreationally and commercially. It did not take me long to appreciate that this taciturn character knew boats and knew exactly what he wanted in his latest vessel when he commissioned Innovison to build his new, ‘somewhat customised’ IV656. Having previously owned an Innovision IV808 Explorer and conducted sea tests on numerous Innovision 656 models for the company, he possesses extensive knowledge of boat performance in general, and of Innovision’s vessels specifically.
After launching ‘Nauti North’ from its custom Innovision trailer we slowly motored out towards the Mangawhai bar at about half tide, the Honda 250 Hp four-stroke outboard making a barely perceptible sound. As I chatted with Grant about the features of his boat and why he had decided to down-size to the IV656, several key words stuck in my mind, funnily enough, all of them beginning with an ‘S.’ Stable, safe, solid, simple and seaworthy, to name a few. I could not help thinking, “Shouldn’t every boat live up to these descriptors?”
On test day, despite the confused sea conditions outside the bar, the bar itself was reasonably calm and although I had prepared for a rough transit from inlet to open sea, crossing the bar was uneventful; without any doubt, largely helped by the raised bow giving extra buoyancy in the front making it harder for the bow to go under when navigating tricky bar crossings. However, once out in open water it soon became apparent that the IV656 was going to get a workout. Before taking over the helm, Grant ran me through the basic controls and features, not least of which being the Zip Wake automatic trim tab system. A control that we utilised quite a bit in the tumultuous sea conditions. I have learned, while doing boat tests, that I need to trust my initial impressions. The IV656 was no exception. Anticipating the sea that we were going to be hammering the boat around in, basic instincts kicked in. In my case, most importantly remembering that I had prolapsed a disc in my lower back years ago and that one of the worst things that could happen to me is to have my spine suddenly jarred while slamming off a wave! So, instead of sitting on the comfortable
Mako seats, I stood up, letting my legs and knees absorb any impact. These seats have a flip up bolster that makes the standing position that much more comfortable. The bolster, once flipped up, sits in the small of your back as you stand either gripping the wheel when driving the boat or holding onto the conveniently and ergonomically placed handrail, if you are utilising the passenger/co-pilot port seat.
The first thing I wanted to ascertain was how sea-kindly this craft was in managing the rough conditions on the day. Turns out, I was most pleasantly surprised. The hull's chine lines are designed to create hydrodynamic lift, ensuring a stable and safe ride in rough conditions. In heavy downwind conditions, the chine design significantly reduces broaching, making the boat one of the safest on the market. The plumb (vertical) bow gives the hull a fine entry while increasing the water line length compared to conventional bow designs, thus riding more like a 1 to 1.5 metre longer boat. These two factors significantly reduce slamming and pitching in rough seas.
Here comes another ‘S’ word. This boat literally slices through waves. As I became more comfortable driving the boat I also got more adventurous with my manoeuvres and with full blessing from Grant, really began to slam the IV656 around on the erratic surface of the ocean. Between the already turbulent sea and the extra opposing wake waves which we were creating with sharp port and starboard turns, I could see that on one memorable manoeuvre, we were going to really slam off a high wave into a particularly steep trough before hitting the next sharp wave. Bracing myself for a spine jarring thump it all turned out to be gratifyingly
The impressively raised bow height and plumb bow set the IV656 apart from other mid-size trailer boats.

anti-climactic, with the plumb bow simply riding through the trough and slicing into the next steep wave as though it wasn’t there. But wait, there’s more! Even though we were throwing water everywhere, extraordinarily little was coming into the boat or even spraying the windshield overly much; the iconic Innovision high bow shear and hull design contributing hugely to keeping boat and crew comfortable and dry. The single Exalto wiper managed any water on the starboard, three-panel contoured windscreen, in front of the helm. Later, I inquired with Grant, "What is the reason for having just one wiper?". In typical laconic understatement he said, “I’m the only one that needs to see what’s going on, so why spend more money?” Got to love it.
While assessing the IV656, I occasionally caused the propeller to cavitate during sharp turns in steep waves. Being a bit surprised about this, Grant pointed out that I hadn’t quite mastered the Zip Wave trim tab system, which he proved to me was true when he took over the helm again and, imitating the same manoeuvres I had executed, only cavitated the prop once.
Having really put the craft through its paces I asked Grant if we could just idle and put a couple of fishing lines over the side, not really expecting to catch anything, but wanting to see how this vessel behaved while just drift fishing on the lumpy sea. Once again, the IV656 impressed! But let us put this into perspective. There is no way that any trailer boat of this size is going to sit smooth and flat. Wave physics and floating objects just don’t work that way. However, what the IV656 demonstrated is that it sits comparatively more comfortably, with less “rocking and rolling”, than similar sized craft. The Hydrodynamic Stability Chines (HDSC) are particularly important to the performance of the hull at rest as well as on the plane. At rest the combination of the HDSC and plumb bow produce an extremely stable platform, while the increased buoyancy in the chines

maximises stability. In fact, and I am going to go out on a limb here, the only other style of boat in this size range that I believe might manage the seas as well as, or even better than the IV656, is a catamaran hull design. Enough said.
Sea trials complete, it was ‘up anchor’ (so to speak) even though we hadn’t actually used the Lone Star drum reel anchor winch, which was nicely installed and concealed in the forward anchor locker. Once we had motored back over the bar, retrieving the boat was surprisingly easy with the custom built Innovision, dual axle trailer equipped with both manual and automatic electric winch and Boatcatch System (automatic bow locking mechanism). After backing the trailer down the boat ramp, Grant simply drove the IV656 up onto the trailer and “Bob’s your uncle”.
SUMMARY
For over a decade Innovision Boats have been working hard to develop the best alloy hull design on the marketculminating in their latest ‘Gen.design’.
Innovision’s point of difference is very noticeable compared to other brands in Australasia. Tapping into their experience in other marine industries, both in business and out on the water, they have developed an utterly unique hull design for the Australasian trailer boat market. Their latest generation hull has been developed to produce the softest ride and biggest internal volume compared to equivalent sized alloy trailer boats, resulting in one of the most stable boats currently on the market. ‘Nauti North’ is just the first of the Latest Generation hulls and one more is currently in marine fit out while another has just come out of fabrication and is off to be painted. And if you are still not convinced that this is a craft worth considering, how about the fact that every Innovision boat comes with a 10-year structural warranty proving that Innovision has full faith in the superior quality and strength of their boats.
Nauti North' heads out over the Mangawhai bar for sea trials.

PROPSPEED
FROM PIONEER TO INDUSTRY STANDARD IN FOUL-RELEASE COATINGS
Propspeed® began with a passionate fisherman, his entrepreneurial mindset, a paint factory, and a problem—nothing on the market protected his running gear from the fouling growing on his sportfishing boat moored in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Determined to find a solution, he teamed up with a local boat painter to develop what is now known as Propspeed.
Guy & Eryn Jacobsen
As soon as people started seeing the clean, gold-painted running gear after a full season on the water, word spread quickly across boatyards, and it started to take off. A quarter of a century later, Guy Jacobsen and his family still own Propspeed, and are proud to have built a business that adds value to the marine industry and boaters alike.
In 2000, the superyacht industry came into view when the yacht Sally Ann arrived in New Zealand heavily fouled. Upon hearing about a new foul-release coating that improved performance and efficiency, Captain Dave Andrews was keen to put these claims to the test and had Propspeed applied to Sally Ann’s propellers before relaunching.
“A year and a half later, when I dry-docked in Miami, the props looked like the day I’d launched in Auckland!” Captain Andrews recalled. This success marked the beginning of the company’s international expansion into the USA.
Strong investment early on in sales and technical staff was a key part of building the foundation in which the business would inevitably scale. Getting into the boat yards and training the applicators on how to apply the Propspeed system guaranteed the highest product performance and customer service. This investment paid off, and now Propspeed has a highly experienced global team of in-field technical sales staff supporting their expanding distribution network, boat yards, partners, and end customers in over 60 countries.
After spearheading global expansion, leading the international sales team to success, and implementing systems and processes for Propspeed’s evolving business needs, Marcus Hamilton officially stepped into the CEO role in 2023.
Reflecting on the company’s journey and future potential, CEO Marcus Hamilton remarked, “As an industry leader in foul-release coatings, we have a responsibility to solve customer and industry problems, and that means we need to continually evolve and innovate as a business. We have always done this through strong loyal partnerships, listening to the market’s needs and putting our people in winning positions where they can excel and deliver on their strengths.”
At the core of Propspeed’s product range is Propspeed, a foul-release coating system designed to prevent marine growth from bonding to underwater metals. The iconic gold coating improves efficiency, reduces fuel consumption, and minimises maintenance costs by protecting running gear from fouling and corrosion. Lightspeed™, endorsed by Lumishore, is a transparent coating for underwater lights that applies the same foul-release technology to protect underwater lightings. Foulfree™, certified by AIRMAR, is a specialised coating for transducers designed to keep them clear of marine growth and operating at peak capacity. The latest addition to the product line is Stripspeed™, a solvent-based paint stripper for underwater metals.
To elevate confidence, increase accessibility, and empower all marine businesses and boaters alike with Propspeed’s industry-leading foul-release system,
support, and service - Propspeed launched its Like A Pro™ Toolkit. It includes the Propspeed Coverage Calculator to eliminate the guesswork in determining how much product is needed for a given vessel. Stripspeed, selected as one of Boating Industry’s Top Products for 2023, ensures an easier, faster and safer way of removing old foul-release coatings and prepping the surface for reapplication. The final part of the Like A Pro approach is an all-new Propspeed Application Kit and a new application technique. The new application kit includes two paint trays, a roller handle, and two four-inch (10cm) Propspeed rollers, one for use with the Etching Primer base and one for use with the Clear Coat. The rollers accomplish a more consistent finish than brushing, whether done by a professional applicator or a DIYer. The new application technique is easy to learn and, when done properly, requires less time than the previous application technique.
“On every vessel we’ve owned and designed, we’ve always used and recommended Propspeed. It just works.”
Bill Upfold, Managing Director at Elite Marine
INDUSTRY BACKED, PERFORMANCE PROVEN
Propspeed’s reputation for excellence is reflected in its partnerships with leading yacht manufacturers.
Nautor Swan, an iconic name in yachting, applies Propspeed to all new Swan Arrow units and recommends it for existing owners.
“Our goal is to uphold a standard of excellence for all our customers, and Propspeed plays a key role in guaranteeing this level of quality for our power boats.”
– said Fabio Marcellino, Power Boats Chief Technical & Operations Officer, Nautor Swan.
Riviera Australia has also adopted Propspeed as a factory standard, applying it to all new motor yachts while continuing to use it in its aftermarket service—a relationship that has spanned over a decade.
Other esteemed OEMs, including Horizon Yachts, Palm Beach Motor Yachts, and Fairline have also chosen Propspeed to ensure the performance and longevity of their vessels' running gear.
“On every vessel we’ve owned and designed, we’ve always used and recommended Propspeed. It just works.” – said Bill Upfold, Managing Director at Elite Marine.
These collaborations underscore Propspeed’s industrywide recognition as the go-to solution for protecting underwater metals, maximising yacht efficiency, and
delivering sustained performance season after season.
Beyond its adoption by leading OEMs, Propspeed continues to prove its effectiveness through independent testing. In partnership with Techbinder, a data-driven vessel optimisation technology firm, Netherlands-based shipbuilder Padmos conducted a third-party test of the Propspeed system on one of their vessels. The results concluded that Propspeed significantly reduced fuel and power consumption as well as the load on the vessel.
“The data we gathered suggests a clear improvement in performance with Propspeed from the day it was applied,” – said Ing. Maurits van Maaren, Naval Architect at Padmos. “Impressed by these results, we’re now implementing Propspeed on all of our vessels and recommending it to our customers.”
Since 1999, Propspeed has been dedicated to solving real-world challenges for boaters and the marine industry. Looking ahead, Propspeed remains focused on addressing the industry’s evolving needs and bringing value to its partners and customers. As part of this commitment, Propspeed will be at the Auckland Boat Show at Stand 108, connecting with industry professionals, celebrating its partners, and showcasing new business tools for success.

The new M600 Offshore Black Edition Flybridge Motor Yacht fuses the latest advancements in motor yacht technology and design with all of the legacy features of the iconic flybridge models past.
BY JOHN CURNOW
Don't you wish you were in this picture?
A very useful and stylish foredeck lounge and forward facing seating arrangement.
You’re simply either an enclosed transom kind of boater, or you’re not. That established, the next item to take in is that there are two kinds of boaters that will flock to Maritimo’s glorious M600 Offshore Motor Yacht. They’re either multigenerational boaters, which very much includes fur kids, or fishos. That too is pretty simple in the grand scheme of things.
I’m an enclosed transom kind of boatie. Must be the old school in me. Happily be on one of Maritimo’s magnificent Adventure Decks, any day of the week, but as a preference, I would always gravitate to one of their craft with three numerals in the model designator. Always the notion that I will once again back down on a big fish…
My first encounter with a Maritimo M600 was in O is for Oh Yeah!, which was very much set up for fishing. A couple of years on, and the new Black Edition has arrived, which was featured in WorldMarine. Media News Show. Now the bonus about being out on the new one is that this one was set up as the multigenerational style of vessel, so it was a great chance to not only look at the advancements of the Black Edition, but also assess the transformability of this terrific platform.
Maritimo’s Marketing Manager, Simon Stewart, explains the rationale of the new Black Edition (available on the hugely popular M55, M60, and M600 and soon the 'S' Series variants). “It came down to how can we put this in a form that the buyers can easily recognise, and therefore simply choose the items that will maximise their usability of the boat. To do that, we considered all the input and options, and then put them in a package form that the customer can select to meet their particular expectations.”
HOW TO ARRANGE IT ALL
The complexity was that the nine key areas of focus meant there were several thousand noticeable, and not so noticeable items that received the Black Edition enhancements. Those permutations and combinations are so wide and varied, and by way of example it ranges from deletion of washer and dryer, to the addition of consoles up on the now even larger bridge deck, to installing a very useful and stylish foredeck lounge and forward facing seating arrangement, that when combined with the demountable shading makes great use of an oft forgotten space.
However, by and large there are two main categories for the never-ending list of developments, and they essentially fall into two categories; aesthetic and then ergonomic/functionality. I think the two biggest items (and maybe that is because they are the largest) are the foredeck arrangement, along with the cockpit console, which has just elevated all of that space and utilised what is a gargantuan area to even greater degrees. It is all about seeing the options, evaluating which ones you need, then ticking the boxes.
Another of the brilliant additions are the teak inserts on the steps in the walkaround deck, that are also lit, and the nice little bullnose treatment will add to the ease of use. So, in this one development we can see form and function being the guiding lights for the entire process. Another may be the white, louvered engine room vents that not only but look even better, but let more air into that most crucial of spaces.
Inward swinging gunwale doors are pretty much mandatory in locales where there are a lot of fixed docks. This option has now been incorporated so that you don’t lose access up the side deck, nor pay a penalty in the size of the rope locker.
An even larger Juliet deck above meant the upper cockpit lounge could be placed some 600mm further aft, and still be under the direct line of shade from above. The extra room can be specified with an array of seating and storage/refrigeration modules depending on the style of saloon doors you select.
MORE IS WELL, MORE!
The winner is the lounge itself with its angled returns, which are simply brilliant for allowing
conversations between the occupants. They also provide for non-impeded access around the lounge and table, and the entire entertainment console it is part of still tilts for entire access to the lazarette, but the real bonus is in all the other things the unit provides for. Having the transom gates swing back into their recesses is so, so good. A larger ‘boot’ as it is often called, also means there is a bigger fridge and BBQ. However, the ‘standing’ access to the lazarette is very cool. Yes, the 700l of fresh water is now in a tank in the for’ard part of the laz (with more made by the watermaker of course so that everyone gets a Hollywood shower), and yes that means the additional bunkering is now only 1000l to take you out to a still very commendable 5500l in total. All of which means you could be looking at up to 3000nm, depending on your speed
The new floating dash is a thing of beauty and customised to meet your selection of screens.
Sublime new headlining and mood lighting.
and engine choice. Even if you are getting busy with it, you still are looking at 500nm, which is Sydney to the Mooloolaba in the one hop, with some to spare.
If you are fishing, you still have room for a small fighting chair, and there is the live bait well in the coaming, and fish well in the cockpit sole, which is now a bit shallower, but still ready handy and able to take good size captures.
Up on the ‘outside’ section of the bridge you still get the ability to enclose it all, but the flexibility of arrangement expends to wrap around seating, with infill, selection of consoles to choose from or the additional head to Port, and the optional aft helm position for total visibility over the cockpit and amazing sightlines to every other angle. Inside, and the new floating dash is a thing of beauty and customized to meet your selection of screens – no one size fits all here. Maritimo’s bespoke electric seats and new footrest round out the essential changes. Think M75, and you are there. Elsewhere and the cruising lounge now has its own coffee table, which will come in more than handy.
Some of the changes in the interior are so sublime that you could miss them. Like the all-one-material headliner, and mood lighting strips, or cozy little home for the safe, to say nothing of the slightly lower bed in the VIP Stateroom and new drawers. The galley has the new ‘waterfall’ island bench that can house all manner of utilities you could require.
However, the pièce de resistance is glorious in both its form and appearance. That would be swapping of the tower pantry to the other side, with the 600mm longer return in the galley delivering more workspace, and placing overhead lockers above the stove has meant the galley now has direct access to the aft section of the famous Vista Windows. Let there be light! Winner. Winner. Chicken dinner. For sure…
Did someone say optional wine fridge? Don’t worry. It hasn’t gone, it is just that now it is housed facing into the main saloon, under the end of the bench that houses the sink. Phew!

TAKING THE GIRL OUT DANCING
Best to think of the M600 Black Edition as 35 metric tonnes with full fuel and water. Four engine options exist. Twin Volvo-Penta D13 straight sixes delivering 800hp a side with the ‘more easily available’ ZF boxes behind them, then a pair of Scania’s Di13 inline sixes with 900hp each and your choice of ZF or Twin Disc final drive. Climbing up the scale and you can opt for the Volvo-Penta D13 sixes at 1000hp a side, or the brilliant Scania bent eights at 1150hp each. The PTOs on the boxes will power the hydraulic thrusters, and one of the engines will supply grunt to Maritmo’s race inspired power steering.
Surprisingly, the difference between the base offering and the range-topper is not that alarming. Seriously.
The M600 has a real cadence at 24 knots. This sort of cruise pace will require you to look to the upper end of the powertrain list, but often you find you do better elapsed trip time versus overall fuel usage when you go down that route. If you are four knots faster for 10 hours as you undertake a passage in daylight hours, for instance, you will be 40nm further down the road each day. That’s Gold Coast to say Brunswick Heads.
We had the twin 900hp Scanias, which do a marvellous job of the initial launch onto the plane in the midteens, and like to hold 20 and bit knots for a cruise, going through to the high 20s WOT, with the latter consuming 170l a side.
Our day off the Gold Coast was quite benign, but that was only because it was building to the crescendo that arrived in the latter part of the afternoon. There
was the typical, barely one metre rolling swell out of the Sou’east, with maybe a 10-centimetre chop on top of that. There was meant to be a super-vague Nor’wester around somewhere, and its imperceptible strength is probably a result of the fact that when we turned to come back, it had become a soft Nor’easter.
Running downwind, but into the swell, we were at 20.5knots consuming 110l a side, and very much wet ship, with all that fuel and water on board. The 30-inch wheels below made for a typical Maritimo super-smooth ride, and the gentle roll (stabiliser off) was close to lullaby material. Oh the joy, but this is a job, not a folly.
A CONVERSATION
It did serve as an entrée into a discussion about stabilisation, however, and how these days, any roll is too much. Little wonder there is so much going on in that market segment right now, as companies work to have the lowest power draw, and being the most effective across a wide speed range, which is nowhere near as simple a task as that last phrase was to write! The entire active trim aspect will be more critical as we move forward, not just for comfort, but also consumption/range.

actuation going
The Scania DI13 900hp inline-six engines deliver high performance and ef ciency for marine applications. These 13-liter turbocharged engines offer exceptional power and torque while maintaining a compact design for optimal weight distribution. Built for durability, they ensure low fuel consumption and emissions. Their advanced fuel injection system enhances reliability and longevity, making them ideal for demanding conditions. A twin-engine setup provides smooth propulsion, excellent manoeuvrability, and robust power, making them a top choice for commercial and highperformance vessels.

It is important to have this chat. Historically, the bridge was small, a place for work, and not a lot else. Make it bigger, enclose it in glass, entice people up there, give them fridges and TVs so they don’t miss out on anything, then put Sat domes and tuna towers above that, and well the CofG has gone skyward too. To say nothing of your overall mass.
After being in the background for some time, about five years ago the stability question really took off. Make boating more accessible, and all… So if you’re the kind that needs to know how many cup holders your car has, then stability is really something you need to look at when it comes to your boat. If not for you, then do it for the others, which in turn will make your whole boating life way, way better. Capiche?
SEND IT HOME (OR IS THAT SAIL AWAY FOREVER?)
Having been on both versions now, I can truly attest to the adaptability of Maritimo’s M600 platform to meet the needs of the two market segments it serves. In the new Black Edition, Maritimo have made the process of creating your own waterborne dreams that much more specific and pleasurable.
What I can also say is that the delight in the process of selection will only be surpassed by sheer joy as you consume sundowners on the foredeck lounge, or back down on a giant tuna at 12 knots that you are going to land and have fresh sashimi only moments thereafter. Break out the cold Sake…

STOP MARINE PESTS CATCHING A FREE RIDE
Let’s protect the places we love visiting in Summer.
Making sure your boat is clean before travelling from place to place isn’t always easy, but it’s important. A dirty hull doesn’t only cost you in fuel and speed - it can also be a haven for marine pest hitchhikers that can travel on our hulls, anchors and equipment, and cause havoc in the coastal places we love.
Many regions - and some marinas - have rules about hull hygiene and biofouling, and more recently, restrictions related to exotic caulerpa have been added to the mix affecting all boats, including those on trailers, jetskis and kayaks.
We don’t want you getting turned away from your destination, so here is some useful info from the experts to help you stay on top of marine biosecurity rules.
WHAT ARE MARINE PESTS?
Plants and animals can accumulate as biofouling on any underwater surface. Sometimes, these hitchhikers are invasive species, known as marine pests, which travel with us to our favourite spots. This includes species like Mediterranean fanworm, Australian droplet tunicate and Asian kelp/ Undaria. Some species, including exotic caulerpa, Asian paddle crab, and Clavelina sea squirt can travel as larvae, juveniles or small fragments attached to our gear. While they can sometimes also disperse in currents, they move further and faster when they hitch a ride aboard our boats.
HULL GROOMING A FOCUS FOR MOORED BOATS
Hull grooming is the new buzzword for boats that live in the water all the time, says marine biosecurity advisor Sam Happy of Auckland Council.
“This means regular hull grooming - antifouling and cleaning with special attention to props and niche areas.”
While most regions have slightly different rules relating to biofouling, she says that ensuring your boats hull has no more than a light layer of slime onboard, means you’ll be good to go wherever you are.
She recommends becoming familiar with the Level of Fouling (LOF2) scale which is now in wide use throughout New Zealand and being adopted abroad.
“If you are getting close to LOF 2, it’s time to arrange a clean, making sure you really pay attention to those hard-to-get-to spots like the keel bulb and intakes that can be easy to miss.”
She says it’s especially important to do before you head away - whether it’s to an island close by or somewhere much further afield. “Just like mice or skinks can jump onboard, it would be easy to carry marine pests with you, you likely wouldn’t even know they were onboard.”
SOME MARINAS HAVE RULES TOO
Many marinas, including those in Northland, the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty, may ask you to take extra steps. For example, Whitianga Marina has strict rules to help keep Mediterranean fanworm out, because if it gets into the marina, its next stop could be the gorgeous fanworm-free Coromandel coast.
To visit these marinas you may need to provide evidence (i.e. receipts) of either an antifoul within the previous six months, or a lift-and-wash within one month of leaving an area infected with marine pests. They might ask for details of where you have been recently, and if you are coming from a risky area, even get you to haul out on arrival.
Marine biosecurity specialist Samantha Happy.
Mediterranean fanworm can hitchhike in hard to clean places, like the bottom of keelboats.
ALL BOATS: CHECK AND CLEAN YOUR IN-WATER GEAR
All boats, from humble kayaks to superyachts, should be aware that pests can spread as small fragments on in-water gear and equipment. This includes exotic caulerpa, the newly discovered red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis, Asian paddlecrab, and others.
Sam recommends that boat owners make a habit of checking their anchor, chain and gear for any weed before moving locations. Anything found should be ‘bagged and binned’ or if that isn’t possible, only ever dropped back in the same location it came from. “Doing it before you move is key, so that you don’t take it with you,” says Sam.
“If you are visiting anywhere that exotic caulerpa has been found, or close to where it has been found, please do some research before you go to ensure you are familiar with the locations, what to do if you find it, and the legal restriction including places where you can’t anchor or disturb the seafloor.”
A dirty boat doesn’t only slow you down... it

FREEDOM AND CONVENIENCE… Adventure Awaits
BY DOUG DUKESON
When invited to join the Haines Hunter team to experience the OP725 Overlander, I didn’t hesitate—especially when the plan was to circumnavigate Waiheke Island (a 100 nautical mile adventure, 185 kms), stopping for lunch at the impressive beachside Man ‘O’ War Restaurant and Vineyard. It was the perfect opportunity to use the boat for its intended purpose - adventure.
The Overlander’s three-wheel-drive system allows it to travel on land at speeds of up to 9 kph.
The Haines Hunter OP725 Overlander is the company’s first foray into the amphibious market, merging its premium, award-winning Sport Pursuit 725 (SP725) model with Anura’s proven S25 electricover-hydraulic amphibious technology.
Built on Haines Hunter’s flagship SP 725 platform, the OP725 (with OP standing for Overlander Pursuit) positions itself as a high-end, production amphibious vessel. From the moment you step aboard, the refined craftsmanship and premium fit-out of the top-of-theline SP725 are evident.
Even with the wheels down, accessing the stern is easy either side of the motor and finally onto the roomy boarding platform. Moving through the transom, you step over the hatch, which tidily houses the Anura electric-over-hydraulic pumps, hydraulic reservoir, and motor controlling the wheels.
Stepping into the UDEK-covered cockpit, it’s clear this boat is set up for serious fishing. It features six rod holders in the coamings, another six in the folding rocket launcher, and collapsible Haines Hunter factory game poles on either side. Additional rod storage is built into the side trays, featuring built-in steps for easier access to the side decks, offering access to the foredeck. Up on the foredeck, you’ll find a Viper drum winch and a split bow rail for easier boarding from the bow. Also added for the fisho, a live bait tank in the port transom, a starboard transom sink with 40 litres of fresh water, and optional hot water for overnighting
and showering. A canvas backdrop provides additional weather protection and privacy when overnighting. There’s comfortable seating for six, including the removable rear fish bins. If I had to request one extra, it would be a sliding seat with a bolster for the skipper, I’m getting fussy now, though. The interior is tastefully finished in Haines Hunter’s signature teak, with black vinyl-trimmed upholstery. A freezer sits under the queen seat to port, which can be easily adjusted to fridge temperature if desired. The starboard queen seat houses the 48V 60Ah lithium-ion batteries for the Anura system. Throughout the cabin and cockpit, there are ample grab rails for safety and floodlights for early morning or evening outings.
At the helm, visibility is excellent, and the electronics setup ticks all the boxes. The Simrad NSS16 Evo3 displays the front wheel position when in land mode. The Overlander is also equipped with C-Zone digital switching and a convenient external C-Zone keyboard in the cockpit. The amphibious control joystick and display are within easy reach, along with the Yamaha Helm Master autohelm joystick. Overhead, a Uniden VHF radio and Fusion stereo system are neatly integrated into the newly designed hardtop. The upholstered dash with a windscreen demisting system is a nice standard feature - perfect for early winter morning adventures.
Thanks to the side windows and hatch, the cabin is naturally well-lit. Inside, you’ll find a generously sized V-berth, suitable for two adults or a cosy three,
Left: The Anura S25 workings are compact and hidden under the centre transom walkthrough.
Left: Offering up to 1.5 hours of runtime, the batteries that run the 48V Anura system are stored under the starboard cockpit seating.
Clockwise: The cabin has a generous sized V-berth, suitable for two adults or a cosy three, with the infill added.
Under a seating squab, is a twinburner LPG cooker with a vented gas locker.
At the helm, visibility is excellent, with the throttle and joysticks ergonomically positioned for effortless control.
The enclosed head is a welcome addition, especially for those who appreciate privacy.
“The Haines Hunter Overlander OP725 is an exciting fusion of marine and amphibious technology. This exceptionally well-handling
7.5-meter hardtop combines high-performance marine capabilities with seamless land mobility, offering versatility. ”
with the infill added. There’s ample storage under the bunks and in the side pockets. The enclosed head is a welcome addition, especially for those who appreciate privacy. Opposite, under a seating squab, is a twinburner LPG cooker with a vented gas locker. At just under 3.5 tons (including the trailer), the Overlander can be easily towed by a suitable vehicle. A recent road tour around New Zealand demonstrated just how transportable this vessel is.
AMPHIBIOUS INNOVATION
Adding an extra 600kg of Anura S25 amphibious workings to transform the SP725 into an amphibious vessel wasn’t just a matter of bolting on wheels, hydraulics, and electrics. The hull had to be engineered to withstand weight distribution across three external points. Structural reinforcing included the addition of carbon fibre to the hull and high-load areas to ensure strength without excessive weight gain. The Anura and Haines Hunter teams worked closely to make this integration seamless. Within the cabin, there is little visible evidence of the amphibious workings, as hydraulic hoses and electrical cables are neatly concealed within conduits in the lower side pockets. The Overlander’s three-wheel-drive system allows it to travel on land at speeds of up to 9 kph. The quiet, user-friendly 48V Anura system offers up to 1.5 hours of runtime. By my calculations, that equates to
an impressive 13.5 km of land travel. We tested the Overlander on loose sandy terrain of Garden Cove, which the Overlander handled effortlessly, with no sign of wheel spin.
With up to 1.5 hours of runtime at 9 kph, the Overlander is capable of up to 13.5 km of land travel.

PERFORMANCE
Haines Hunter’s long-standing motto, “The secret is in the ride,” has stood the test of time. Having experienced the SP725, I expected a similar ride from the Overlander, and I wasn’t disappointed. Despite the additional weight of the amphibious gear and extra batteries, the balanced 21-degree hull maintained a smooth, dry ride. Our day on the water was relatively calm, but the Overlander proved its seaworthiness as we passed through the notoriously choppy Motuihe Channel. While the Overlander is fitted with Lectrotab trim tabs, we barely needed them. Approaching the beach was a breeze. The Overlander climbed ashore effortlessly as we pulled up to our lunch stop at Man ‘O’ War Restaurant and Vineyard (which, by the way, is a must visit if you are in the area - by road or sea). Departing, I was impressed by the Anura system’s tight turning lock. With six people onboard and a full 240 litres of fuel, the Overlander, powered by a Yamaha 4.2-litre V6 350hp, had power to spare. At 6000rpm WOT, we reached a top speed of 40.8 knots. Under lighter loads, speeds of 44+ knots have been recorded. At a cruising speed of 23 knots, running at 4000rpm, fuel consumption was 42.9 litres per hour. At this pace, the Overlander had a range of 129 nautical miles. Navigating with technology is now an integral part of boating. The Radar Operator course teaches you to understand and safely operate radar systems for collision avoidance and improved situational awareness. Meanwhile, the GPS Operator course provides in-depth knowledge of chart plotters and navigation techniques, helping you stay on course even in poor visibility.
Breakdowns on the water can quickly turn dangerous. The Outboard Engine Maintenance and Inboard Engine Maintenance courses guide you through essential care, troubleshooting, and repairs, ensuring your engine is always in peak condition. The confidence you’ll gain could save your day—or even your life—in a tricky situation.
What happens when the skipper can no longer lead? The Suddenly in Charge course empowers passengers with the basic knowledge needed to take control in an emergency. It’s a fun and interactive way to boost confidence and ensure everyone aboard knows what to do if the unexpected happens.
For sea kayaking enthusiasts, the Sea Kayak course delivers everything you need to know about safety, weather, navigation, and trip planning. Whether it’s a scenic paddle or an adrenaline-filled exploration, being prepared can make all the difference.

The new Azimut 51 Atlantis recently arrived in Auckland.
From the largest luxury yacht builder in the world, Azimut, their 51 Atlantis model is an impressive luxury sports yacht that perfectly balances performance, comfort, and sleek design. The first unit recently arriving in Auckland this summer.
BY DOUG DUKESON
Large screens adorn the helm featuring VolvoPentas Glass Cockpit system, full integrations of all of the onboard systems with fingertip control.
A spacious galley sits to the port side in the lower saloon.
Extra table seating can be added by pulling out the two poufs which form the base of the starboard side sofa.
Azimut Yachts is an Italian luxury yacht manufacturer, renowned for producing high-end, stylish, and technologically advanced yachts for the global market.
The company was founded in 1969 by the late Paolo Vitelli in the city of Avigliana, Italy. Now with five production yards in Italy, Azimut has since become the world’s leading yacht brand, known for crafting sophisticated vessels with cutting-edge design and exceptional performance.
The company now boasts a range of 27 different models across seven ‘collections’ , the largest boat the company now produces being a 44 metre of which one has been ordered by a New Zealand buyer. Add to that, Azimut also owns Benetti, which builds yachts from 34 metres through to over 100 metres.
Azimut is known for its elegant and contemporary designs, which blend modern aesthetics with classic nautical elements. The company works with renowned exterior and interior designers, including the likes of Alberto Mancini, M2 Atelier, and NEO (who have designed 51), to ensure that its yachts are both luxurious and functional.
Like the rest of the Azimut range, their Atlantis collection which consists of this 51 and smaller 45
model, is known for its bold, aggressive looks and highperformance features, this vessel is an ideal choice for those who want both style and functionality on the water.
This particular example, has freshly arrived in New Zealand, pre-sold to a repeat Azimut customer who stepped up from the smaller 45 Atlantis model. The brand has established itself as one of the top selling European brands in New Zealand.
“The brand does strike a chord with buyers here in New Zealand,” says Azimut Yachts NZ Brand Manager, David Hawke.
“I think New Zealanders are more aware of luxury brands and products and we’re seeing that with the uptake of the number of new late model Azimut’s now in New Zealand. They are more aware of international style and design trends, but also the shipyards ability to blend cutting edge technology with Italian style.”
“A lot of our clients are now onto their second or third Azimut’s, one has just ordered their fifth from us.”
OUTDOOR DESIGN
What strikes you first is the exterior. The boat features sharp lines and an angular, dynamic profile. Its large, expansive windows and sleek lines give it a modern, aerodynamic feel that stands out in any marina.
The Azimut 51 Atlantis is designed with a spacious and functional layout, optimized for socializing, relaxation, and enjoyment. One of the standout features of the Azimut 51 Atlantis is its attention to outdoor living.
The aft deck is designed to provide an inviting space for al fresco dining or lounging. A large retractable roof in the cockpit area will add extra light and ventilation if needed, as will opening the windows on either side.
A cockpit canopy/enclosure has been added to this boat on its arrival, which is easily fitted when the boat is not in use, but also encloses the boat nicely for winter boating excursions. The cockpit area is also air conditioned – ideal to maximise those brisk but sunny winter days.
There is a large dining table with comfortable seating, perfect for hosting guests or enjoying meals together. The aft deck seamlessly integrates with the swim platform, making it easy to access the water for a swim
or other water sports activities. The platform can lower down to a depth of 1.2m, and creates a nice ‘beach club’ setting, and also aids with the launching of the tender or a PWC should you wish.
Azimut also provides a variety of options for guests to enjoy the water. The yacht’s design includes a tender garage which is rare for a sport style yacht of this size, where you can store a small tender or a personal watercraft. The owner of this Azimut 51 has a TruKit inflatable dinghy with electric tiller motor in the garage, while he plans to carry a SeaDoo Spark PWC on the hydraulic lifting platform.
On the bow, you’ll find a spacious sunbathing area which you can access via side passages which are wide and safe,- this forward area is ideal for soaking up the sun while at anchor. A retractable bimini shade can be added as an option.
In fact, facing the classic C-shaped sofa is a second one, which can be split if needed to form two poufs, arranged around the dining table, creating a fullyappointed dining area.
Next to the table there is enough space for a bar, a cooler, an ice-maker and a sink which can be fitted into the modular unit as an option. The helm has two adjustable seats for the skipper, and co-pilot.
LUXURY DOWNSTAIRS LIVING
The interior of the yacht is divided into three primary areas: the main salon, the galley, and the cabins. The main salon is bright and airy, with large windows that let in natural light and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding water. It’s an ideal space for socialising or relaxing, with ample seating and entertainment systems available for guests.
The galley, situated to port, is a well-appointed and fully equipped, perfect for preparing meals while on the water. It features modern appliances, ample counter space, and smart storage solutions, ensuring that everything you need for a comfortable stay is within easy reach.
In terms of accommodation, the 51 Atlantis features three beautifully appointed cabins: an owners cabin forward with its own ensuite bathroom and two guest cabins aft. The master suite is spacious and features a
full-sized bed, plenty of storage, and large windows that provide excellent views across the water. The guest cabins are equally well-appointed, with comfortable sleeping arrangements (one with two singles, another with a double) each offering high levels of privacy. The design of the cabins maximizes space, ensuring that guests can enjoy their time on board without feeling cramped.
The bathrooms are equally luxurious, with modern fixtures, stylish finishes, and full showers. With a 450L water tank, there is also provision to fit a water maker should you wish.
There’s a sense of sophistication in every corner of the yacht, offering a level of comfort that surpasses typical expectations for a vessel of this size. Azimut Yachts offers limited customization options for the Atlantis 51. Essentially, being a production boat, you can’t change the general layout of the boat, you can however choose from a range of finishes and upholstery choices.
PERFORMANCE
Performance is at the core of the Azimut 51 Atlantis. Powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS800 600hp engines, the yacht is capable of reaching impressive speeds of up to 35 knots. The IPS system offers efficient fuel

consumption and excellent manoeuvrability, especially at low speeds. The joystick control enhances handling, allowing for precise docking and navigation, even in tight spaces.
The advanced hull design and stabilization systems provide excellent stability, even in choppy waters, allowing the yacht to cruise comfortably. Having been on other Azimut’s the advanced hull design and heavy duty construction (the 51 weighs 22,000kg), means they are more than capable in rougher conditions.
Whether you’re navigating through busy marinas or cruising at full speed across the open sea, the Azimut 51 Atlantis delivers a responsive and enjoyable driving experience.
The Volvo engines kick it on to the plane with urgency but remain smooth and refined, and amazingly quiet, onboard we could not believe just how quiet the engines were. Though its steering is light, positive and responsive. The boat’s ability to cruise between 18 and 32 knots, is most appealing with some very impressive fuel figures.
At the helm, the 51 features the Garmin/Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit system which integrates all of the vessels onboard systems along with engine information, Humphree auto trim control, GPS/Chartplotter, sonar and radar – all customisable via the dual touchscreens.

AMPHIBIOUS BOATS BUYERS GUIDE
Currently, nearly 75 amphibious boats are available from 17 different manufacturers in NZ, and the numbers are growing.
REPORTED BY RON CZERNIAK , MARINE JOURNALIST
The market share is dominated by Sealegs International, which uses its own system on eleven models, but the competition continues to grow fast from manufacturers using the Anura and Aquix (Tectrax) Systems, as well as many continuing to use the Sealegs Systems. The sizes range from the 3.8m Sealegs tender to the 12.3m Sealegs 12m cabin, with other builders focused on various sizes between these two extremes. These Amphibious boats from other New Zealand boat builders are available in alloy, fibreglass and as RIBs in open, centre console, walkaround cuddy and full cabin boats. New Zealand built Amphibious boats allow you to travel on both water and land. These boats are
designed to function as vehicles that can seamlessly transition between navigating water and driving on roads or land surfaces. In New Zealand, where there's a unique blend of coastlines, lakes, rivers, and rugged terrain, amphibious craft come in handy for both recreational and commercial uses. They are also used by the military in New Zealand for certain logistical and transport needs, where they can easily navigate coastal areas or flood hit zones. The combination of New Zealand’s geography and the versatility of amphibious vehicles makes them especially practical in areas where roads may be limited or difficult to access, and water travel is important. We take a look at what options are available for 2025.
Assault (Family Boats)
Assault offers two amphibious RIBs, the Pursuit 8 and the Pursuit 920, fitted with the Anura Retractable Wheels System. Built in NZ, the fibreglass hull and hardtop are moulded to perfection, creating a sleek, sporty silhouette. You can choose 1100 or 1670Dtex Hypalon inflatable tubes to complete the match. Below the waterline, a 25.5-degree deep vee hull gives the Assaults a ride second to none with exceptional stability at rest and underway. The Pursuit 8 features a ‘short cabin’ with a walk-through to the bow, offering excellent storage space without compromising functionality. The Pursuit 920 can be optioned with the same ‘short cabin’ style, or a long cabin version (with an optional bow seat) making it a suitable overnighter. Both models offer a spacious cockpit lending itself to a variety of uses - add a tube ladder for diving trips, bait station and rocket launcher for the fisher folk, or a comfortable bench seat for additional passengers. The Assault Pursuit 8 and 920 are high-volume RIBs offering all-weather protection while comfortably carrying upwards of 10 passengers: making them the ideal choice for recreational day trips or commercial operations. McLay
The McLay 741 Raptor amphibious boat is the only amphibious boat in the world that hides all 3 wheels while on the water. The front wheel retracts into the boat’s bow and a door, that runs on 3 tracks and is hydraulically operated, closes the wheel cavity off completely. The rear wheels retract into fenders, taking away the risk of the anchor rope or fishing lines getting caught up in the wheels. This complete retraction of the wheels ensures
that there are no spray issues when out on the water and making the boat more attractive compared to boats with exposed wheels
Using the Tectrax Electric System the wheels are driven by electric motors, which are much quieter than having a petrol or diesel motor inside the boat to drive the hydraulics. Recharging the battery after a day’s use is simply carried out by plugging into a standard 240-volt 3 pin socket – fully

The Osprey Hard Top Amphibious is available in several sizes from the 700HTA through to their 950WHT (2.85 “wide series”). The 750HTA on the Osprey ELERT alloy trailer comes in at 3200kg, making it eminently towable. Sealegs
While boats with wheels have been around for a long time, it wasn’t until the early 2000s, with the introduction of Sealegs that they became a commercial reality. Sealegs began as an idea on a napkin in 2001 which quickly turned into a prototype, a fibreglass inflatable with electric wheel motors, which evolved into a manufacturing company producing Sealegs amphibious craft using a hydraulic powerpack and drive motors. Based in Auckland, New Zealand, and founded by locals Maurice Bryham and David McKee-Wright, Sealegs has constantly been pioneering the way forward for amphibious boating since the first Sealegs came off the production line in 2004. Today there are over 1850 Sealegs craft spread over more than 52 countries around the globe, and the company have dedicated offices in the United States
and Australia as well as a wide network of distributors and service agents.
Twenty years ago, Sealegs introduced the boating market to a simple concept, enabled by clever engineering and technology, using powerful motorised, steerable wheels driven by an onboard powerpack. The amphibious craft can be driven from a storage location, down a boat ramp or beach and into the water – all with the occupants remaining in the boat completely dry. All current amphibious wheeled boats have utilised this same basic Sealegs principle regardless of the brand.
For several years Sealegs also fitted their systems to other New Zealand boat manufacturers, but today (apart from custom craft over 9m) all boats with Sealegs technology are designed, manufactured, and assembled under one roof at their Auckland factory. However, the System 70 and System100
Profile Boats
Designed initially as a safer beach launching vessel, the Profile Boats range has developed to provide craft from family recreation to seriously good dive and offshore fishing boats, as well as commercial vessels. The inherent safety of the unique alloy chamber design offers superior stability and makes all Profile Boats virtually unsinkable. Profile Boats are manufactured in Napier, New Zealand. The company currently has a Profile 835HW in build using the Anura system. This will be completed around May/June 2025. Profile Boats works with both Anura and Tectrax systems. PROFILEBOATS.COM
kits (soon to be followed by System 80 kits) are available to export markets and Sealegs will continue working with other builders to co-design and integrate Sealegs amphibious systems into their new craft builds.
The Sealegs range of boats is extensive and growing, both in the traditional RIB, full alloy cabin hardtops and more recently the Sealegs 3.8m electric tender. Sealegs offer several different size amphibious systems from the smallest electric System (System 20E) through System 70 petrol/hydraulic, System 70 Electric, System 80 petrol/hydraulic, and at the high end – the System 100 diesel/hydraulic.
With over 1850 craft shipped worldwide, coupled with ongoing development of new models, the future continues to look bright for Sealegs, the originator in amphibious boating.

Smuggler Marine
The Smuggler boat name has been well known in New Zealand and Australia for over 50 years. They now also build amphibious RIB models from 6 metres through to 11metres. Combining the Anura S25 amphibious system fitted to Smuggler’s proven deep vee hull, results in a comfortable, safe ride with great performance on the water. The forward wheel retracts into a bow recess while aft, the wheels withdraw into the D-tubes, keeping them hidden from sight when underway, providing a safer, drier ride, while retaining a streamlined-looking hull. Additionally. lifting points can be
added should the craft be used as a tender.
The Smuggler 800 Mid Cabin model can be optionally fitted with Anura’s electric drive amphibious system.
The Smuggler Strata 780 Super Sport brings an exciting concept to the Smuggler range. Access to the forward lounge area is via the walk-through bow, with twin consoles, two seats aft and a low sporty profile. The Strata 780 SS is suitable as a tender, a day boat, or fishing and diving companion. Many options are available including inboard, outboard, twin engines, as well as all the accessories you want. With the iconic Smuggler 27-degree hull, this

valuable deck space. At 8.2m overall and with a massive 5.1m2 of deck space, the Senator 770 Stealth is a boat that means business. Whether fishing out wide or a 1km drive from the beach to the channel, the Stealth will take you just about anywhere. Senator's function combines
Tectrax’s electric amphibious technology to create a formidable package. With beefedup construction, the width, depth and size of the RH 690 give room for full-length bunks and the option of spacious lockup forward and main cabins.

With its well-earned heritage in mind, White Pointer takes the design of its boats seriously to create the ultimate amphibian. In a boat like this, they didn’t modify an existing model in their range but chose to invest in starting from a clean sheet of paper. With initial on-water tests loaded with the same weight as the eventually to be installed Tectrax system, they could better understand what is required to
(7.1m) and the FF2600 (7.8m). The FF2600 is available in a Walkaround configuration now made possible with its extra width 2.75m beam. THE 2025 AMPHIBIOUS BOAT SYSTEMS GUIDE
When Sealegs introduced the first amphibious craft in 2001, they opened the door for a revolutionary and exciting market shift in this unique New Zealand boat manufacturing segment. The ‘wheelie’ market has since grown to encompass three brands of retractable wheel systems and nearly 75 amphibious boats from 17 different ‘Kiwi’ boat builders. Sealegs remains the market leader in volume, with Anura fast gaining popularity with many boat builders locally and overseas. AQUIX (Tectrax) has focused on all-electric systems and is proving popular with builders supplying boats meeting their customer’s demand for a quiet “land” craft.
Sealegs Amphibious Enablement Systems (AES):
THE AMPHIBIOUS SYSTEMS ORIGINATOR
Sealegs International, headquartered in Auckland New Zealand remains the originator of amphibious boating and continues as the world’s most popular brand by sales numbers alone. The Sealegs Amphibious Enablement System (AES) kits today provide amphibious capabilities for craft from 3.8m long through to their range-topping 12.0-meter Cabin RIB. Today’s range of kits span the System 20 electrically driven system (System 20E) through System 70 petrol/hydraulic, System 70 Electric, System 80 petrol/hydraulic, and at the high end – the incredible System 100 diesel/hydraulic capable of supporting craft up to 10,000 kg in weight (operating environment dependant).
The System 20E is used exclusively on
the Sealegs 3.8m electric tender - the system providing up to 50 minutes of continuous on-land run time. The System 60 is designed for vessels with a maximum gross weight of up to 2500kg, the System 70 being designed for vessels with a maximum gross weight of up to 3500kg and is powered by either a Briggs & Stratton 35hp petrol engine or in electric form, by a 48-volt battery system. The System 80 supporting vessels with a maximum gross weight of up to 6500kg and at the high end the System100 is capable of handling up to 10,000 kg gross weight depending on operating conditions. Power to run this system is provided by a 97hp Kubota turbo-diesel engine. All systems come standard with switchable two wheel/all-wheel drive (AWD) built-in, power steering and
automatic braking system (ABS). All Sealegs amphibious systems have a run time of at least 35 minutes within every hour, without overheating.
Some years ago, Sealegs debuted their fourth-generation electric concept craft combining the latest advances in lithium battery and brushless electric hub motor technology. In 2023 this same technology was introduced in the 3.8 Tender, the world’s smallest amphibious boat and Sealegs continues to innovate developing additional electric over hydraulic systems.
Sealegs remains the largest manufacturer of amphibious systems designing, manufacture and assembling over 120 Sealegs craft per year at their facility in Wairau Valley on Auckland’s North Shore. SEALEGS.COM

Aquix:
Tectrax have been developing electric amphibious systems for 10 years, and their systems have been adopted by various leading alloy boat builders in New Zealand. This year the company enters a new era, with the launch of AQUIX, their second-Generation system and the world’s first Fully Electric Amphibious System. The NEW GENERATION 2 AQUIX system has built on Tectrax’s popular All Wheel Electric Drive technology with numerous other advancements, enhancing reliability, safety and performance.
The AQUIX System is fully digital and easy to operate via its intuitive joystick and modern touch screen. The option of an autonomous launch and land function means that the transition from water to land is easier than ever!
With no ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) propulsion motor, the system is quiet and really doesn’t compromise on internal boat space, ensuring a great on-water experience. At the core of the system, there are three independent axial
Flux motors driving reduction gearboxes. These efficient and powerful drives deliver significantly more power and Torque to the wheels than traditional hydraulic systems. This means easier launch and recovery, better traction and hill climbing. Each rear motor has an integrated electric parking brake for safety, and all motors have regenerative braking (re-charging the batteries). Additional standard features include traction control and an electric differential. Further advancements include Triple Seal Technology and advanced moisture sensing in the IP69 rated motors to provide peace of mind out in the water.
AQUIX’s new system uses electrically driven actuation to deploy and retract the legs. This unit is compact and has enabled AQUIX to remove all the hydraulics
contained in their previous systems. This means less weight, less maintenance and less compromise on boat space, making the system significantly easier for boatbuilders to install! AQUIX’s new electric steering removes the traditional steering arm seen on amphibious boats and replaces it with an integrated steering motor, much like power assisted steering on modern cars. This steering provides a quicker response than hydraulic steering, and it also improves range, giving your boat unbelievable manoeuvrability on land. The new system is powered by a 48V LiPO4 Batteries covered by a 10-year warranty and providing a run time of up to an hour.

KINGFISH LIVE BAITING TIPS
Catching a kingfish is high on most Kiwi anglers list and autumntime offers plenty of opportunities as these tough fighting fish are found in close cruising the shallow harbours, out lurking behind surf beaches and over deep-water reefs in good numbers to target.
WITH MATHEW HEWETSON
The first thing you need to do when trying to catch a kingfish is to head out and target them. Don’t go snapper fishing, you need to spend the time looking for and targeting kingies. Some people find this hard as they can often be a challenge to locate, and anglers want to catch something for the bin. Kingfish will turn up if you spend the time looking for them, you need to have plan with good tackle to take them on.
Live baiting is one the best methods for targeting big fish like kingfish. Nothing appeals more to a large predator than a struggling baitfish on the end of the line that can’t easily get away.
KINGFISH
The writer scored this kingfish on a kahawai slow trolled in close off the
Tairua coastline.
Keep checking your live baits in the tank over the day with seawater top-ups to help keep them fresh.
The following are my go-to tips for using livebaits:
1 FOCUS ON LIVE BAITING
As mentioned already, you need to head out with a plan to target kingfish on livebaits and stick with it. Don’t try snapper fishing when the action is quiet, stick to your plan of either drifting livies over reefs, slow trolling them or deployed under a balloon while at anchor and the kings will eventually turn up.
2 LIVEBAIT TANK
A good livebait tank is necessary and will keep your baitfish alive all day. If you don’t have one on the boat, there are plenty of good options such as a portable Hi Tech 30L tank that can be used in the boat or even off a wharf or rocks
3 BAITFISHCATCHING
Make sure you spend the time early catching a good supply of fresh livebaits. Kahawai, mullet, sprats, piper, or mackerel are your best baitfish to deploy with a hook attached. Try using sabikis, small jigs, softbaits and even nets in harbours or off beaches to gather your livies first. The larger your live bait the better it will stay alive on the hook, mid-sized kahawai or large mackerel are using the harder livies to deploy. While sprats and piper need smaller hooks and lighter leaders to help keep alive in the water.
4 SOUNDER KEY
Using your sounder to locate the schools of baitfish such as mackerel will help by catching your baitfish a
approach and ensure your
lot quicker and then enabling you to fish for longer. It can be frustrating when you can’t locate any baitfish, so once you find a good reef or spot where you can catch livies mark it on your sounder to return to. When on the water make sure you look out for feeding birds such as terns, petrels or gannets that also signals live baits and kingfish in the area.
5 HOOK POSITION
Ensure you use a circle or recurve hook and if slow trolling, hook through the top of the livebait’s mouth (as shown on kahawai image), so the fish can swim easily behind the boat and still breathe. If deploying the livie under a balloon at the surface while anchored or to the bottom on a sinker on running rig, hook through the back of the head in front of the dorsal fin.
Use your sounder to find the baitfish schools to catch your live baits and locate predators underneath.
Slow trolling livies is a good
hook is through the top of the mouth.
Slow troll your live bait just offshore, over reefs or around bait fish schools where kingfish prowl.
This kingfish had been feeding on small Jack mackerel which it coughed up upon hitting the deck.
6 CHECK LIVIES
Over the course of the day, keep an eye on the state of your live baits in the tank and top up with fresh water often to ensure they are healthy and ready to go when you need to deploy them.
7 BACK UP ROD
It is a good idea to have a second back up live bait 24kg rod/combo ready to go for another crew member as often once hooking a kingfish, another fish or even several will appear to follow their struggling mate around. This gives you another chance to land a kingfish by tossing down a second live bait while the first angler fights their fish.
8 DRAG SET
When preparing the day before, set your drag on your reel using a pair
of fish weight scales before heading out so you can trust your live bait combo when you need to battle it out. If using 24kg line, then around 8-12kg is ideal drag. If fishing shallow or in rocky terrain set it higher to help prevent fish busting off in the foul. Remember, kingies are one of the dirtiest fighters and look for any structure they can find to end the fight and live to fight another day!
9 CHECK LEADER
After landing a good kingfish, make sure you check your leader for any fraying or knicks and the knots to the hook and leader to the mainline. If in doubt it is best to retie a fresh hook and/or leader after a strong fight on a large fish, as you want peace of mind when the next green and gold torpedo arrives to chase your live bait around the boat.
10 TAKE ONE FISH
Many charter operators who target kingfish have a strict one fish per angler limit, returning other landed fish over the day’s fishing. This is a good approach for all Kiwi anglers to remember, as even a 12-15kg kingfish provides a lot of fillets for a family and friends to enjoy. By using recurve or circle hooks the fish are typically mouth hooked and you can lift a fish into the boat gently for quick photos and then releasing. It is a great feeling battling kingfish and then watching them swim away after the fight.
Remember the bruises from the battle are part of duking it out with one of the hardest fighting fish in the sea and wear them proudly.
After battling a good kingie it is wise to recheck your leader and knots.
If your boat doesn’t have a live bait tank, there are portable options such as this Hi Tech Plastics tank.
Remember to limit your catch as just one nice sized kingfish provides a lot of fresh fillets, return healthy fish hooked in the mouth.
