Farm Life - return to social life by Roger Hill
We recently attended three large social events. All of them had a farming flavour and thus a chance to ‘chew the cud’! Subjects included the spiralling cost of living, the war in Ukraine, bird flu and of course English cricket. Also a possible water shortage which, considering it rained every time we ventured out, seems impossible. The problem is that ground water levels are at their lowest since 1976, with bore holes on Exmoor already running dry. Reservoirs too are a third down on last year. Our enjoyment of each day off was not diminished though. Firstly, we celebrated ninety years of Devon Young Farmers. A very proud moment and achievement for the youth movement of the countryside, instigated by Lord Amory all those years ago. Secondly, we attended the Devon County Show with highlights again being the YFC marquee, the young handlers showing their livestock and schoolchildren singing their hearts out on stage. Thirdly, our neighbour’s wedding (photo opposite), postponed from 2020, served up a feast of food, festivity and hope for the future. All three occasions demonstrated that we are in good hands with such youthful enthusiasm to face the aforementioned woes. Overall it is young people who will drive us forward. ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (website: quoit-at-cross.co.uk)
