confessions of a holiday homebody We’re officially marking the start of the holiday season. For some retail outlets, the season started in September. For Southlake at large, it starts with the lighting of Southlake Town Square on Nov. 18 during the annual Home For The Holidays Celebration. If you’re like me, one of the first holiday purchases are tickets to a festive show or two. In the past, my family has enjoyed all kinds of area events, from “The Nutcracker” at Bass Hall to hometown holiday revelers Pentatonix and every Gaylord ICE! display in between. It’s exciting putting together our events sections as we discover so much to see and do over the next few weeks. However, my absolute favorite holiday activity is inactivity. After a day of football and parade watching, I prefer to indulge in some classic holiday shows and movies with my girls. Cue up some Charlie Brown, Chevy Chase or Buddy The Elf, and I’m content huddled up by the fire like we're surviving those Northeastern-level snow storms of my youth. As we embark on the only time of year when it's socially acceptable to spend entire days in comfy clothes, enjoying elaborate family meals, we feature some local wine entrepreneurs, a sectional couch that redefines “rear speakers” and a few other ways to help get in the holiday spirit.

Sleighing the Season READY OR NOT, IT'S TIME TO GET MERRY The holiday season is a magical time filled with joy, laughter and festive cheer. But let's be real, not everyone feels like Buddy the Elf from the get-go. So we’re here to ease the transition from Grinch to merry-maker. Fear not, we have some thoughts, tips and a tasty holiday punch that will have your heart growing three sizes in no time.

Say No To Elf Envy For many children, the countdown to Christmas officially begins with the first sighting of an Elf On The Shelf. The hide-and-seek-styled phenomenon has kids scouting for elvin magic and parents sweating the details since they first hit the market in 2005. Stop losing sleep over what your elf will do next and join in on the fun by purchasing one of many creative activity kits found online. Each 12- or 24-day kit comes with a flurry of costumes, props and scenes that will amaze your kids all season long.

Getting It All Done With A Smile With so many wonderful holiday and year-end events on the horizon, it can be overwhelming to wrap your head around all the possibilities and responsibilities coming your way. If baking teacher’s gifts, sending holiday cards and attending every event leaves you forgetting to replace your Elf On The Shelf, it’s OK — you’re not alone. Two out of three people describe their stress level as “very or somewhat” elevated during the holidays, according to a Harvard Medical School study. When stress levels are peaking, do like Santa and make a list. Jot down your holiday-related tasks and your family’s favorite activities complete with deadlines on the calendar. Then, check it twice to ensure things are prioritized according to your goals. If and when things get hectic, ask yourself if there are any elves to whom you could delegate tasks like gift wrapping or general errand running. Getting organized can help ease your mind while you happily check off those festive to-dos. Remember, it’s OK to politely decline invitations and requests, especially when those commitments interfere with your own to-do lists. Don’t forget to schedule some much-deserved peppermint latte metime to keep your own spirits bright.

Tis’ The Season For Quality Time Childhood memories are lasting memories that often come from the greatest gifts and attending amazing shows. However, the hours spent finding that gift or those perfect seats are often done alone and leave you drained. Don’t forget that it's not always about what you spend but rather how you spend your time together. Be sure to carve out time to slow things down and really connect with loved ones during every moment, big or small. Quality time starts with decorating your home, and even the most daunting tasks can be made fun. Start early and enlist the entire family to take part in placing heirlooms and beloved decorations throughout the house. Special ornaments, photos and other trinkets provide the perfect opportunity to share stories your kids will remember for a lifetime. Baking with your children is another great way to get into the festive spirit while filling the house with the scents of your most treasured recipes. Bake an extra batch of cookies for a friend or neighbor and make a point to deliver it together as a family. A movie or game night is the perfect complement to a plate full of fresh cookies. Pull out an old board game and give it a spin, then follow up with an airing of mom or dad’s most beloved holiday specials from their childhoods.

Holiday Habits Worth Having A few small moments together can add up to a season’s worth of special memories. Read your favorite holiday stories before bedtime. Fill out and send a few greeting cards together each night. Set out and complete a winter-themed puzzle in the family room. Bake and eat some Christmas cookies. Instant cocoa equals instant smiles. Shop for distant family members together. Drop off some unwrapped toys and games to a worthy charity. Take the scenic route and enjoy more decorated holiday homes. Choose a holiday series to binge-watch together.

The Spirit Of The Season It goes without saying that giving is receiving, especially when it comes to the holidays. While you’re out shopping around Southlake Town Square or Park Village, make a point to give a little extra when you can — it goes a long way. Many families are lacking in food and presents during the winter — that’s why several area nonprofits are hosting donation drives to directly support those who need it most. One of the longest-running campaigns is GRACE’s Christmas Cottage, which has given thousands of toys, home goods and appliances to families every year since 1986. Big givers can donate items directly at their donation station in Grapevine, or take a shift at the cottage anytime before Dec. 22. Southlake DPS will also be hosting its own food and donation drives at its central, North and West facilities up until Christmas Eve, and you can volunteer to drive either for Metroport Meals On Wheels or Call A Ride Southlake. If you’re looking to get even more involved, SafeHaven of Tarrant County has several opportunities to serve families in crisis, whether that involves preparing and serving meals or helping children with tutoring and homework. Whether you’re donating time, treasure or talent, there are several ways to pay it forward this time of year — and you’ll be grateful that you did.

Giving With GRACE Wondering what to donate to your local drive? The GRACE Christmas Cottage has put together this helpful list. Don’t underestimate the power of gift cards, which are great for hard-to-shopfor teens. And don’t forget to add batteries when needed. Board, party and card games. Stuffed animals. Children’s and young adult books. Bicycles, scooters and skateboards. Electronic tablets. Extra comforters and blankets. Handheld toys and sports balls. STEM and discovery sets. Remote control cars, planes and helicopters.

A Cocktail With Some Punch Serves 8-10 people 1.5 cups gin 1.0 cups champagne 1.0 cups club soda 0.75 cups fresh lemon juice 0.5 cups simple syrup 8 dashes of Old Fashioned Bitters Garnish with whole star anise and grated nutmeg

Cheers To Holiday Hosting The holidays are the best time to gather with family and friends. And as the host, that should mean you too. You’ve set the scene, sent the invites and pre-planned the menu. So when the party starts, break away from the kitchen and bartending duties and get into the festivities. To ensure an easy transition from party planner to partygoer, try these simple steps. Having a themed drink upon arrival is a great way to welcome guests without the awkward “what will you have?” line of questioning. A thoughtfully curated holiday punch or two can be made in advance, providing a timely and festive option as everyone settles in. Strategically place some heavy hors d'oeuvres, charcuterie and desserts throughout your home to encourage guests to mix and mingle. Take the same care with wellplaced waste baskets, and the cleanup crew (you) will thank you later. If you’ve invited groups who’ve never intermingled before, try the great icebreaker game Jingle Mingle Bingo. Printable holiday bingo card generators are available online for free. With a few worthy prizes and scoring spaces like “loves peppermint,” “collects snow globes” and many more options, your guests are sure to find common ground and lots of laughs in no time.

Popping The Christmas Question Finding the perfect gift for your loved ones can be a daunting task. You want to give them something meaningful, but asking them directly might spoil the surprise. Thankfully, a few workarounds make it easier for you to take hold of the reins so your sleigh and shopping cart keep soaring. For starters, sticking with something they already love is an easy win. Replacing worn-out running shoes, beloved sweatshirts and pajamas or long-used yoga mats, they’re sure to appreciate a new and upgraded version. Take special note of any new interests or budding hobbies casually mentioned in conversation or through their favorite social media accounts. Your gift could be a thoughtful nudge toward something like gardening, crafting cocktails or a new sport — maybe even pickleball? AI can also help fill in the blanks for you. Just answer a few simple questions with the “gift-finding tool” at UncommonGoods.com or WTFDoTheyWant.com, and harness the power of the internet. The story alone is worth it, and if it goes sideways, you can always blame technology. You can also gain some insight by asking around. Try a friend or coworker who may have some ideas you haven’t considered. Or alternatively, ask your loved one what they might buy for their own pals to broaden your scope. And if all else fails, enlist the kids. What you’ll lack in subtlety will be made up for in cuteness.

Tipping Points Whether it’s your babysitter, hair stylist, housekeeper or anyone else who makes your year better, tipping service providers a little extra during the holidays is a great way to show gratitude and appreciation for a job well done. Roughly half of U.S. adults say they typically give higher-than-usual tips to at least one special service provider this time of year. Of course it’s the thought that counts, however, a good rule of thumb is to gift the equivalent of one day’s pay or an amount that is equal to what it would cost for one of their regular services. Tip amounts from mail carriers to child care providers generally range between $20-$50.

Hallmark Moments Whether you’re filling out Christmas cards or watching overly romantic holiday movies, there are many ways to fill your days with a joyful holiday vibe. Reminisce with classic movies like “Miracle On 34th Street” or share your inner child with specials like “Frosty The Snowman” and “How The Grinch Stole Christmas.” Create a playlist of your favorite yuletide songs and take Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole or, dare we suggest, Taylor Swift’s “Christmas Tree Farm” along for the errand run.

A Minimalist Makeover From the twinkling lights to the ornaments on the Christmas tree, part of the holiday magic lies in its presentation. But you don’t have to stick to traditional reds and greens to feel festive. Feel free to embrace new ideas and re-elevate your seasonal decor. Becca Anderson, owner of The Christmas Shoppe in Southlake, has seen a gradual shift from traditional vibrant color schemes to more monochromatic themes filled with hues of champagne, silver and platinum. Just like the colors themselves, less is more when it comes to decorating your tree. Instead of overdoing it with the ornaments, many are choosing a minimalist Scandinavian approach that is gaining in popularity. Accent your tree with simple garlands, craft paper decorations and frosted pines for a warm, natural and oh-so-simple look. “In general, the trend is leaning more towards simplicity,” Becca says. “People just want to be less busy, both literally and decoratively.” Home decorators don’t have to feel limited to just one aesthetic. Whether you combine glass ornaments with paper chains or jingle bells, Becca encourages people to combine different styles and discover what works best for their own winter wonderland. “It’s actually really popular right now to mix upscale and homey aesthetics together,” Becca says. “People shouldn’t be afraid of trying something different.”

After the recent legislative session did not provide additional funding for school districts at large, the Carroll ISD board of trustees made the decision to both help balance the budget and provide a short-term cash flow for the school year. Properties listed for sale include the first schoolhouse building at 1009 N. Carroll Ave., the administration office at 2400 N. Carroll Ave., a site located west of Carroll Senior High School and additional property located south of Johnson Elementary School. “We don’t wish for a budget shortfall to negatively affect our academics and opportunities for our students,” CISD superintendent Dr. Lane Ledbetter says. “We’re looking to close the gap so we may offer pay raises for our teachers and continue to provide a high-quality education.” Bids for these properties can be submitted online at SouthlakeCarroll.IonWave.net.

Uncorking Wine’s Pure Pleasures Dr. David And Derek Meadows Help Consumers Rediscover Their Love For Wine From Their Southlake Headquarters

I

t’s a tale as old as wine — waking up with a pounding headache the morning after enjoying a glass (or two) of vino. While overconsumption and dehydration can often be the cause, many suffer from such reactions even after a single glass. Colleyville natives Dr. David Meadows and his son Derek knew this feeling all too well. Instead of settling with suffering, the two put their heads together to find a better way. With a background in research, development and pharmaceuticals, David and Derek hit the lab and founded PureWine in 2013 to keep the good times flowing. The initial result came in the form of a convenient wine filter — The Wand, a single-use wine purifier that sits in your glass, silently removing histamines and sulfites without affecting the vintage’s flavor profile. Now a decade after incorporating, the family business is still changing the way people enjoy their favorite beverages.

ISOLATING THE PROBLEM At first, David and Derek were unaware of how many people also suffered from wine headaches. “We felt isolated at the time,” Derek says. “We wanted to figure it out.” The pair realized a gap existed in the wine industry for those who enjoyed savoring a casual drink but were burdened with wine intolerances. After looking at the science behind alcoholic beverages, David and Derek went to work to find the root of these headaches. “The genesis of [PureWine] was we had seen and read a lot of myths of what was causing these interactions,” Derek says. “We had to do our homework. We looked into them and found a lot of [the myths] were not necessarily correct. We started to put the pieces together.” David and Derek realized a majority of these negative side effects came after drinking bold reds, which led to an “aha” moment – histamines. Histamines are a chemical compound naturally created in the body in response to injury, allergy or inflammatory reaction. They are also found in a variety of foods and beverages – especially in fermented items like alcoholic beverages. Reds have a higher level of histamines because producers use the skin of the grape in the winemaking process. Red wines with thicker, darker skins also normally carry a higher concentration of histamines. Histamine reactions can greatly differ depending on the individual. 48 • NOV 23

While some may muster through a few glasses with high histamine levels without any significant side effects, there’s a large number of consumers who have histamine intolerances, with symptoms ranging from skin reactions to respiratory concerns. “It was causing people a lot of pain,” David says. “We found a problem that needed to be solved.” The two set up shop at the University of North Texas Center for BioHealth and spent countless trials trying to selectively remove histamines and sulfites without affecting the beverage’s flavor profile. “We found a lot of ways to ruin a lot of wine,” Derek says. After unearthing the technology and incorporating the company, the two found a few angel investors in Southlake that allowed them to share their scientific discoveries with the world. “We found living in this area gave us a lot of resources,” Derek says. In 2016, the two launched The Wand, a portable filter that uses ionic technology to pull out problematic compounds like a magnet. After drawing out the molecules, the histamines and sulfites stick to The Wand’s resin thanks to its nanopore absorption. PureWine quickly grew, gaining press attention while also being quickly utilized by customers – both online through Amazon and in big box wine stores. In fact, Derek SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

says they have been able to see PureWine’s The Wand stand strong as Amazon’s bestselling wine accessory for three years running from 2021 to 2023 thanks to a thirdparty source. “We found a blue ocean where there were no competitors,” David says. “It was all new. We were essentially trying to build a new industry.” In 2019, PureWine launched its next product – The Wave, a whole-bottle purification product that is inserted into the stem segment and purifies and aerates the blend as you pour. Two years later, PureWine dropped its next product – The Phoenix, a reusable purifier that uses a disposable Bio-Pod filter cartridge made from eco-friendly plastic. These whole-bottle solutions opened up a new door, not only removing histamines and sulfites but also improving wines that had been affected by oxidation. “We call it making a good wine great,” David says. PureWine users have also shared positive experiences using these products on other alcoholic beverages, including beer and dark spirits – which are also known for their histamine levels. David and Derek now hold more than 25 global patents and trademarks, protecting their intellectual property, innovations and cornerstone place within the industry. A FAMILY BUSINESS After the business started to grow, David and Derek knew they needed to bring on additional help. PureWine’s head of sales and marketing, Greg Anderson, originally worked with David and Derek as a consultant. After hearing about their concept, Greg knew he wanted to be a part of PureWine. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

“When David started talking about his vision and what the product was, I told him, ‘I know your consumer because I’m married to her,’” Greg says. “My wife was a consumer before we had consumers. She used to love red wine, then after a period of time, she said, ‘I can’t drink this anymore.’ She had given it up.” Greg has been able to see firsthand the impact PureWine’s products have on the wine community. “People are passionate about wine and the lifestyle it brings,” Greg says. “If you read some of the testimonials we receive, you can see it really makes an impact. Customers would have gatherings with friends and ladies’ nights out and couldn’t participate. It left a gap or void for people. And they now say, ‘Thank you for bringing this back to me.’” That impact can be seen through PureWine’s sales across the world. “The validation is that we have now sold more than $15 million globally,” David says. “We are in over 40 countries. We are in 11 out of the top 15 wine retail locations, including Costco, Total Wine, Bevmo!… we are in just about every wine retailer.” PureWine has also been recognized for its business and innovation endeavors. Some of its recognitions include winning the 2017 State of Texas Innovation Award, being named in the Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship’s Dallas 100 Entrepreneur Awards from 2020 to 2022 and becoming finalists for TechTitans 2023 Emerging Company Innovation Award and Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year 2023 Southwest Award. The pair even pitched in front of an infamous panel of “sharks” in 2021. David and Derek are proud of all the impact they have made from their offices in Southlake. By partnering with NOV 23 • 49

manufacturers across the country, the company is proud to be sourced and manufactured 100% on U.S. soil. But disrupting an industry brings challenges. While they originally were the sole solution for the market, PureWine now often has to protect its product line from knockoffs that infringe on its patents. But they are not letting others in the industry slow them down. “It’s a never-ending process,” David says. PureWine expanded its product base in August to include an eco-friendly The Wand, proving David and Derek continue to look for new ways to improve the drinking experience for customers. “There’s been a yearning for more earth-friendly products,” Derek says. “We have our Bio-Pods, and now we [have] a fully biodegradable product using biorenewable material – plastic that’s made out of sugar cane.” While the innovation, recognition and sales help David and Derek continue to grow PureWine, the two say they continue to be driven by their mission of helping people rediscover a passion for wine. “We have touched millions of people’s lives with our products,” David says. “They have lives that felt diminished. There are people who struggled to drink a glass of wine – who wanted to be a part of a social gathering. And we can bring them back to something they live. What we 50 • NOV 23

found is that it brings fulfillment into people’s lives again.” The product and vision sparked that initial interest in PureWine, but Greg says it’s the family environment that keeps him inspired to be a part of PureWine. “The family element is really important to David and Derek,” Greg says. “They are passionate about what they do, and they have high standards. They are both scientists, so we are all very much driven by data and analysis. But they make it fun.” While David and Derek have pioneered a new innovation in the world of wine thanks to their scientific backgrounds, they know that they are also building off of an industry that has roots that go back centuries. “Wine is one of the healthiest beverages ever invented,” David says. “It’s been around 9,000 years, so hopefully nature has proven it can be a helpful beverage.” That thought process allows PureWine to channel its true place within the business world. “We view ourselves as a health and wellness lifestyle company,” David says. So next time you are grabbing a bold Cabernet Sauvignon or plan to order a Syrah to pair with your steak, come prepared with the latest technologies— cooked up right here in Southlake.

It all begins on Nov. 20 with the annual Carol of Lights event, where the entire stretch of Main Street will light up in a dazzling display of seasonal greetings. Although snow has yet to be included in the forecast, winter sports are abound at this family-friendly festival. Returning from its initial debut last year, the ice rink will be the perfect spot to show off your skating skills, while the snow tubing hill will give you the chance to sled with your friends. For those who prefer a challenge, head over to the world’s largest inflatable maze or the rock climbing wall to put your grip to the test. If you’re after a more leisurely outing, Santa will be stopping by with his reindeer to grab a memorable moment on your camera roll or listen to what you really want this Christmas. Speaking of gifts, the Christmas Market offers several shops perfect for your holiday shopping spree. The

Live From New York…

It’s The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade!

F

loats packed with fun and wild characters, celebrity-laced performances and balloons as big as 40 feet tall. Since its first march in 1924, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has been part of America’s most iconic holiday traditions. Close to 30 million households tune into NBC every year, but over 3 million people brave the cold and the 6th Avenue traffic to experience the parade up close — including the Emerald Belles every once in a while. If you’re looking to celebrate the magic of Macy’s while enjoying New York’s take on turkey dinner, venture out to where The Great Pumpkin meets The Big Apple.

CHECKING IN After landing at JFK or LaGuardia airports, it’s time to unpack your bags and settle into your hotel. There are plenty of options nearby the parade route like The Mandarin Oriental, which is closest to the start of the parade at Columbus Circle and boasts spectacular skyline views from its MO Lounge and Mandarin Ballroom. Parade-view rooms can also be reserved from the JW Marriott Essex House on West 59th Street, and for rooms as pricey as the views are priceless, the Ritz-Carlton’s corner suites can’t be beaten.

With the rest of the route being a straight shot from Central Park to Macy’s Herald Square, there are plenty more great hotels to be found along 6th Avenue. The historic Warwick Hotel was built in 1926 and has been providing a prime front-row seat to the parade for almost its entire history. Meanwhile, the New York Hilton Midtown is one of the tallest hotels in New York with rooms offering a top-down view of the balloons passing by. For those hungry for more, 1 Hotel Central Park’s Thanksgiving breakfast feast from chef Jonathan Waxman is the perfect accompaniment to a beautiful parade view with croissants, parfaits, scones, bagels, eggs and breakfast katsu sandwiches. FLOATING ON AIR Staying within walking distance of the route is the best way to go if you’re seeking to get closest to the action. Even though the festivities don’t start until 9 a.m., you’ll have the best chances to secure a prime spot before 6 a.m. Don’t forget to dress in layers, bring a chair and pack some snacks for an energy boost. Avoid West 34th and West 38th as that’s where the telecast will be recorded and bystanders won’t be allowed. The good news is once you’ve secured your spot, the front-row visibility to the parade will have been well worth it. Fan favorites such as Kermit The Frog, Pikachu and Ronald McDonald can all be expected, but updated balloons such as Beagle Scout Snoopy help make the parade feel new yet familiar. Tom Turkey will be gobbling up everyone’s affections in his float, and be sure to wave to Santa as he swings by on his sleigh. TURKEY TIME Once the parade is over, it’s understandable to pack a nap in before continuing the festivities. You’ll want to be rested up to take advantage of New York’s eclectic foodie scene that is sure to serve up Thanksgiving in new and exciting ways. Experience a West African fusion at Lagos TSQ with habanero pepper turkey wings or plantain-stuffed chicken, or try the sausage and mozzarella-stuffed roast turkey at Fresco by Scotto. If you’re looking for a more traditional Thanksgiving dinner, The Garden at The Standard offers a spectacular three-course turkey meal for the family, while Jack & Charlie’s No. 118 has roasted heritage turkey with a seasonal chestnut stuffing. No Thanksgiving meal is complete without dessert, and there are several bakeries and shops that will guarantee your meal is properly polished off. Junior’s Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake has three delicious layers of pumpkin filling, cheesecake and pumpkin buttercream, while Milk Bar’s nine-layer pumpkin coffee cake is filled with crunchy cinnamon streusel, vanilla cake and pumpkin frosting. But if pie is where your heart is, Le Pain Quotidien bakes all of its pumpkin, pecan and apple pies from scratch. However you spend it, Thanksgiving in New York has never been sweeter.

A New Kitchen And Bar Concept Comes To The Hilton

ince 2007, the Hilton Southlake has served as the preeminent hotel in Southlake Town Square, offering everything from luxurious rooms and meeting spaces to convenient access to town square’s many shops and restaurants. While its long-running restaurant, Copeland’s of New Orleans, closed earlier this year, the Hilton was quick to introduce a whole new restaurant for hungry diners. Holding its grand opening earlier this month, The Henley is a new kitchen and bar with a focus on American infusion cuisine. Don’t let appear-

ances fool you — while it looks like the same Louisiana restaurant as renovations are underway, The Henley is an entirely new concept from the Driftwood Hospitality culinary team that emphasizes small plates and locally sourced ingredients. “We wanted to give Southlake Town Square something different that would compete with existing restaurants,” corporate chef Joe Thomas says. “Southlake is a very health-conscious community, and I feel this direction is what they need and what they’re looking for.” While its approach to fine dining may be different, not everything in The Henley is completely

overhauled. The centerpiece 360-degree bar is still intact, as is the dispenser that pours vodka, tequila and Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey. What’s new is the 100 bourbon varieties in stock, a fresh lineup of cocktails that includes an Aperol Spritz & Chill and Texas-Tini and an elevated wine program that has varietals from Italy, France and New Zealand. “We’re upping the game with our new wine program, emphasizing quality, curation and crowd-pleasing vineyards,” chef Thomas says. “It’s a win-win all around.” With the menu divided between small and large plates, there’s something for everyone. And all plates feature exciting infusions of Italian, Asian and Mexican cuisine with an American twist. “It’s not straight American cuisine,” chef Thomas explains. “America is a melting pot, and it’s a collective of many cuisines. We wanted our menu to reflect that.” Those influences are immediately apparent in the hickory salmon bites, which are glazed in either hot honey barbecue sauce or roasted garlic aioli, as well as the whiskey barbecue chicken wings. The crab cakes and ahi tuna poke come with a passion fruit or yuzu aioli for a delicate balance of flavors, while the bang bang shrimp explodes with heat thanks to the togarashi spices. The creamy Mexican Street Corn Dip is not to miss either if you’re looking for something more indulgent. For heftier appetites, The Henley spares no expense when it comes to its large plates. The salmon is topped with an extra helping of crusted chorizo, while the Texas Strip Steak Sandwich is served on a spicy jalapeno-cheddar ciabatta loaf. The Black Angus Sliders are topped with a thick pork belly slice, while the 8-ounce brisket burger is complemented by a side of truffle parmesan fries. The pappardelle and bucatini pasta is not to miss either, especially since they’re served with a topping of blue crab, shrimp or scallops. But the star of the menu is the butcher-cut steaks, all of which are sourced from the premium beef company Meats By Linz. From the 10-ounce New York Strip to the 16-ounce cowboy ribeye, all of the steaks come with a choice of either cracked black pepper demi-glace, chimichurri sauce or smoked bone marrow butter for an extra savory taste. “The presentation is top-notch,” chef Thomas says. “It’s one of the best beef programs I’ve ever worked with.” Make sure to save room for dessert, because these delicacies end every meal on a sweet note. The Whiskey Cake is layered with salted caramel and pecans, while the Ice Box Tart has a light summery flair with lemon meringue and raspberries. The beignets put a pep to your step with a Kahlua coffee pot de creme filling, and for those looking for a lighter bite, the Salted Caramel Budino comes in a stemless martini glass where you can see the layers of toasted hazelnut throughout. “The Hilton is the center focal point of the square,” chef Thomas says. “This was the original hotel in Southlake, and a lot of people love staying here. To give back to the community with a gathering spot like this is really important to us.”

Steeped In Tradition Celebrate With Tea Time At The Adolphus

Dine like royalty as the oldest and most revered hotel in Downtown Dallas welcomes the return of its seasonal tradition, Holiday Tea in The French Room. A window into 20th-century European architecture, The Adolphus invites guests to absorb 100-plus years of rich history in one glamorous and indulgent afternoon. Running seven days a week from Nov. 1 to Jan. 7, guests are served a three-course meal complete with two artisanal teas and a glass of champagne or a non-alcoholic sparkling cider. Accommodating British royalty in the late 1900s, The Adolphus is the perfect place to indulge your inner “Downton Abbey” while you sip on the finest teas in a castle-like atmosphere. Produced by local purveyor Zakti, The Adolphus' specialty tea blends are curated for every course. Grown in Zhejiang, China, the Shi Feng Ling Jing green tea blend has a complex floral and nutty profile, while the Mangalam's Estate Superb Tippy Assam harvested in India yields a full-bodied malt and fruit flavor with notes of spice. The seasonal Puerh blend from Yunnan, China, is both sweet and fragrant with a licorice aftertaste, pairing well with any fare. This year’s festive menu offers simple chef-prepared sandwiches that are sure to keep your specialoccasion attire looking fresh and clean. The cucumber cress with herbed cream cheese and the truffled egg salad on a butter croissant are just as tasty as they are convenient. If you would like to explore beyond the holiday menu, browse other teatime savory indulgences like the beet-cured salmon with preserved lemon labneh and pickled onion, as well as the coronation chicken with mango chutney in a lettuce cup. Afternoon tea wouldn’t feel the same without scones and pastries. Fortunately, The Adolphus offers expertly crafted confections to top off the palette. Cherry citrus and French lavender scones are served alongside seasonal preserves and English double cream for a crumbly delight. For sweeter cravings, the carrot cake with cream cheese icing, raspberry pâte de fruits, hazelnut tart and blueberry cheesecake makes for a divine dessert.

Love At First Bite The Cookie Society Comes To Park Village

If you feel a sweet tooth coming on, look no further than this Texas-based bakery. Coming to Park Village later this month, husband-and-wife duo Marissa and Jeff Allen are serving up gourmet creations that will take your tastebuds back. From tackling a lifestyle as an NFL family to creating a multi-million dollar baking business, the Allens aren’t your average entrepreneurs. It all started with a fateful trip to a famous New York bakery, where Marissa grew determined to formulate the perfect cookie. Through trial and error, her passion for baking prevailed. "When she started making these cookies, everybody was telling me the same thing – all my teammates, friends, family, that these were the best things they had," Jeff says. "Once we started getting these words of affirmation from other people outside of our household, that's when it swept the thought that maybe we should start a business." Inspired by childhood memories of store-bought cereals, snacks and homemade goods, flavors like peach cobbler, hot cocoa and frosted oatmeal are just a few unparalleled options Cookie Society offers. "When we go out to eat, I always like to look at a dessert menu,” Marissa says. “I just want to know what people are eating, and [if I] can turn it into a cookie." If the menu is any indication, Marissa's concoctions have yet to meet their match. Monthly rotating flavors will have you questioning whether you’re consuming a cookie or an indulgent dessert. The pumpkin-stuffed french toast is filled with a soft center of pumpkin cream cheese, while the apple pie is packed with a scoop of sweet cinnamon apple filling. "We want to become the cookie of Texas," Jeff says. "When you think of Texas, when you think of cookies, I think we should be in the conversation." As Cookie Society continues to expand in retail locations across North Texas, Southlake felt like the perfect next step on its journey to becoming a statewide staple. "We have a soft spot for the suburbs," Marissa says. "We love the family aspect of it. We live in Frisco, and we love that it's very community-driven, kind of a tight community. Southlake has those same things, so we're looking to find other families that can spread the love."

Miss Southlake Is Authentically Herself

P

ageant life for many starts at an early age, especially in the South. While most adolescent contestants busy themselves with evening gowns and interview questions, a young Annette Addo-Yobo was adjusting to life in a new country after her family emigrated from Ghana in 1999. As the former Miss Dallas and the newly-crowned Miss Southlake, Annette looks back at how far she’s come and the people who helped her along the way. I WAS A YEAR AND A HALF OLD WHEN… my parents brought me to America with just two cases and a few hundred dollars. They had everything in Ghana — their own business, their own house, all of their families. They left everything behind and gave it all up just to pursue a better life for themselves and me and my siblings.

tive of a young boy and everything he missed out on because his dad was in prison. I walked up to the stage with an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs on, and I spoke from the perspective of losing my mom and feeling chained to my experiences. It was different and unexpected, but it made me stand out and the judges remembered me for it.

I ALWAYS WANTED TO… compete in pageants while growing up, but when I looked up the requirements, I found out that I had to be a U.S. citizen. I knew citizenship was going to take a long time, so I just kind of threw that dream out the window.

WHEN I COMPETED IN MISS SOUTHLAKE… I had a lot more confidence and knew what I was doing the second time around. Last year, I was the rookie who didn’t know what to do and was always asking questions. This time, I was the expert in the room and I was the one answering the questions. It was a full-circle kind of moment, and it showed how much I’ve grown over the past year.

AFTER I BECAME A CITIZEN LAST YEAR, I… was eligible to compete in my very first Miss competition. I had no prep and no idea what I was getting myself into. I just showed up with a travel-sized suitcase, my purse and a plastic bag for my garments. I saw all of these girls with wheeling closets and tons of suitcases, and I was thinking to myself ‘I’m not going to win.’ To my surprise, I ended up winning Miss Dallas on my very first try. I DIDN’T GROW UP COMPETING IN... pageants. I didn’t know there was a pageant brand or look. I wasn’t pretending to be anybody else or fill in some type of role. I just went in as myself. Looking back, I think that’s what helped me to win. MOST CONTESTANTS WILL USUALLY… sing, dance or play an instrument for the talent portion. WINNING MISS DALLAS AND MISS SOUTHLAKE… has given my family something they can hold onto. My mom would have loved to know this was worth everything they left behind. To be able to see her children are all successful and doing these incredible things, it’s a great honor to kind of give back to my parents for all they had to give up just to be here. THIS ORGANIZATION REALLY… changed my life over the course of two years. There’s so much you gain, from personal development to the confidence to talk to people and the opportunity to build your own platform. To be able to say I’m a regular girl who is also Miss Southlake, I think that’s opened doors for a lot of people to feel they don’t have to grow up in pageantry in order to do something special.

Robert Tyson, 817-980-0683 Melissa Tyson, 214-449-7020 “We love supporting the Me Squared Cancer Foundation, a Southlake-based nonprofit founded by cancer survivor and local resident Mimi Tran. The foundation helps newly diagnosed adult cancer patients via emotional, educational and financial resources.”

“For me, a big part of being a real estate agent is being able to give back to the community. In addition to the North Texas Food Bank, I love supporting GRACE, the Me Squared Cancer Foundation and the American Heart Association.”

Great agents. Even better neighbors. These are the agents who care… about the community you share.

Kim Bedwell, 817-229-9445

“Two charities I love are the Texas Old English Sheepdog Rescue, which supports a breed that is near and dear to my heart, and Second Chance Farm, which rescues animals that have been abused or neglected as well as those with health problems.” (Pictured: Kim with her dog, Bentley)

Nancy Dennis, 817-992-7889 “Timarron Country Club’s Charity Classic golf tournament is one of my favorite annual events. With proceeds going to Folds of Honor and the Employee Care Foundation, this tournament is a fun sporting event for a great cause.” (Pictured: Nancy with Russ Anderson, brokerage president and CEO)

Brian Edwards, 817-300-0658 “Saving Hope Animal Rescue is a great local organization and is foster-based, which means all their rescue pets are in loving homes while they wait to be adopted. We found our rescue pup, Whiskey, through Saving Hope, and she has brought so much joy to our lives!” (Pictured: Brian with his sons and their rescue dog, Whiskey)
