Back-to-school season in Southlake means more than sharpened pencils and packed lunches—it’s also time for tennis racquets to return to local courts. As classrooms refill and teams rally for fall, our community’s spirit finds new life across campus hallways and hardcourt rallies.

For many, August is about reclaiming old routines—like the thwack of a tennis ball at the Southlake Tennis Center. In “Courting the Long Game,” we serve up a story about Southlake’s first family of tennis. Mia and Stephen Poorman have dedicated their days into making their facility more than a destination for drills and tournaments—but also a second home where players of all ages and abilities build friendships that last long after the game is over.

Meanwhile, for Dragons of every age, the back-to-school rush comes with a renewed sense of pride in a singular symbol. In “Dragon Tale,” we relive the surprising, storied journey of Carroll’s fiery mascot—from its 1950s roots to the legendary logo guarding our entryways, jerseys and hearts. The Dragon’s legacy is about unity forged through shared history and a trademark that everyone from kindergarteners to varsity champions wear with Dragon pride. Tennis leagues and team traditions may look different, yet both remind me what makes Southlake special: the spaces, symbols and rituals that bring our community together.

Expert Plumbing For An Exceptional Community

What is a PRV?

Many people live with underwhelming water pressure and assume that it's just what the city provides. This may not be the case! Residents whose homes were built after 2003 have a device on their water line called a Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV). Water pressure in the home is like blood pressure in the human body. It needs to be within a certain range for everything to function properly and avoid sometimes serious consequences. The water pressure to the home should be between 40 and 80 pounds per square inch.

What are the symptoms of a bad PRV?

Low Pressure is one. Sometimes, when the PRV fails, it decreases the pressure and water flow across the entire system. If you observe poor water pressure at different faucets throughout the home, this could be the reason. Pressure Reducing Valves can also cause weird noises whenever different faucets are turned on. This sometimes sounds like a humming, squealing, or knocking sound.

The PRV can also fail by allowing high water pressure into homes. Although this won’t affect your experience as much as low water pressure, this high pressure is wearing out the plumbing in your home. Finally, PRVs can fail by simply leaking. Because they are usually installed in the front flower bed, it will create a wet, soggy spot where this valve is located.

What repair options do I have for my failing PRV?

If any of these issues sound familiar, just give us a call. We can run some tests to determine if you have a PRV and if it is starting to go bad. If it is, then we can replace it for you. After the work, we put any disturbed landscaping back as neatly as possible, making it look like we were never there. You’ll have a brand-new PRV that can be easily adjusted and serviced in the future and a new stainless steel ball valve that you can use to shut off the water to your home without needing any tools.

Why should I choose Legacy Plumbing for PRV work?

We specialize in PRV repairs and replacements and have extensive experience handling expansion tanks. We have helped hundreds of homeowners replace their PRVs.

OCourting The Long Game

25 YEARS OF TENNIS, FRIENDSHIP & COMMUNITY

n any given day at the Southlake Tennis Center, the soft thwack of tennis balls echoes across sunlit courts, mingling with chatter from the shaded patios. Newcomers and regulars arrive for drills, lessons, and league play. But behind the daily routine is something deeper: a 25-year legacy shaped by Mia Gordon-Poorman and her husband, Stephen Poorman.

Together, the Poormans have built more than a tennis facility. They've created a welcoming hub where players find friendship, confidence and community - both on and off the court. That spirit is especially evident in Mia’s work with local women. By designing leagues and lessons around their busy schedules, she’s helped transform casual play into lasting connection.

“I’ve heard women tell newcomers, ‘Join a club, get involved in PTO, and find a team at the Tennis Center. That’s how you build a social life here,’” Gordon-Poorman says. “And we love that.”

FROM CALIFORNIA LOVE TO TEXAS COURTS

Stephen Poorman first picked up a racket in Southern California when he was eight years old and never looked back. His junior career was elite, and his collegiate career was decorated—a three-time All-American at Claremont McKenna College, NCAA team champion and eventual professional player traveling the international circuit. But perhaps more impressive is what came after.

"After I retired from the tour, I started teaching because I genuinely love the game,” Poorman says. “But more than that, I love helping people build self-confidence through it.”

“Tennis is a tough sport,” Poorman explains. “It’s a game of mistakes. You're out there by yourself, and you have to learn how to handle errors, problem-solve in real time, and stay mentally strong. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced player, those are the life skills that tennis teaches.”

It was those life lessons that eventually led him to coaching, and in 1995, after Stephen and Mia relocated to Texas for her consulting job, he landed a role at a local country club. When the Southlake Tennis Center

opened in 1999, Poorman was hired to direct the junior program. Then in 2002, the city of Southlake put the center's management up for bid. The Poormans, now with a toddler in tow, submitted their vision as a team— and won.

“Our goal is always the same: to help people make social connections through tennis,” says Gordon-Poorman. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing that happen. We’ve had teams who’ve been here since we started. Those teams become your core people. And to me, that’s the greatest thing about this sport.”

AN ELITE FACILITY THAT FEELS LIKE HOME

Thanks to the work of the Poormans, Southlake Tennis Center is more than a place to hit a ball—it’s a homecoming. Nestled in Bicentennial Park, the award-winning center features 17 lighted hard courts, two indoor climate-controlled courts, and a 1,500-square-foot pro shop. Men’s and women’s locker rooms mirror the amenities of a private club, but with a community-minded mission.

“That sense of family is part of our culture,” says Gordon-Poorman. “Everyone who works the front desk understands their role is to make people feel seen and wanted. Our coaching staff is the same. Our expectation is mutual respect and collaboration. Here, that sense of

connection is built into everything we do.”

Southlake Tennis Center welcomes people from surrounding communities with open arms, but it pri oritizes Southlake residents, ensuring locals enjoy the benefits of city-appointed amenities. Neighbors come together through shared interests, strengthening the community with far-reaching connections.

From a facility standpoint, the city’s investment shows. Courts are resurfaced regularly, landscaping is pristine and front desk staff greet each visitor like a member. The USTA has taken notice, too, naming the facility one of just 50 USTA Premier Facilities in the country.

“I think we’re most proud of the USTA Facility of the Year award, because we did not nominate ourselves. The Texas section nominated us. The USTA national [committee] reached out to the individual regions and asked, ‘Who do you think represents what we think of as an example of what a tennis center should be?’ After conducting interviews and reviewing paperwork, we discovered that we had been named. We’re one of only fifty in the United States and one of very few public facilities,” says Gordon-Poorman of their prestigious designation. That kind of recognition is a reflection of

Match play is built into the curriculum from the start, teaching kids how to self-officiate, compete respectfully and stay composed under pressure. The lessons extend far beyond the court, permeating other aspects of their lives.

“You really see the mental side of the game come into play. Players are starting to challenge more calls, push boundaries, and it can get pretty intense out there,” says Poorman. “But that’s also part of the learning. There’s pressure to win, yes— but also pressure to stay composed, to manage doubt and confrontation, especially when someone questions your call. That kind of mental fortitude is invaluable—not just on the

Poorman adds, “We focus on effort and attitude. Those are things you can control. If your kid tried their best and kept a

CHANGING THE GAME FOR ADULT BEGINNERS, TOO

That same European-inspired framework that built a worldclass junior program eventually led to one of Southlake Tennis Center’s most successful adult programs: “New to Tennis,” which started in August 2023. The program was born out of a simple observation—too many beginners were walking away from the game after just a few lessons, challenging the Poormans’ goal of helping people connect and build community.

“We wanted to change that,” says Gordon-Poorman. “We designed ‘New to Tennis’ as a long-term progression, helping adults build confidence and skills step by step. It’s not just about learning strokes—it’s about feeling capable and welcomed so that, by the time someone joins a league, they’re ready. That’s what makes them stay.”

The Poormans applied the same logic to “New to Tennis” that they used with kids: low-compression balls, smaller courts and developmentally appropriate progression to help adult players succeed from day one. Players focus on movement, timing and coordination without the pressure of mastering advanced techniques too soon.

The results have been transformative, particularly for the women of Southlake, many of whom have built deep, lasting friendships – something many adults struggle to achieve. Aside from lessons, league play, tournament play and volunteer opportunities abound, providing myriad connection points in one place.

“New to Tennis” participants not only improve faster but also stay in the game longer. Many graduates are going on to join leagues, form teams and even bring their children into the junior program, building a generational love of the sport. While the program is creating fresh bonds on the court, it’s far from the first time the center has sparked lasting connection. Over the years, entire teams have grown up together here— some playing side by side for decades. For those, it’s about far more than tennis.

“We’ve had teams who’ve been here since we started,” says Gordon-Poorman. “When I talk to them, there’s this beautiful nostalgia. Those teammates were there for the highs and the lows. They were there when a spouse passed away, when a child didn’t get into their dream school and for every birthday and milestone.”

A TEAM BUILT ON TRUST, TALENT & TEACHING

Behind every great program is a great team—and the Poormans have built one that reflects their values. Many coaches hail from collegiate or international backgrounds, but what truly sets them apart is their shared commitment to community and growth.

“Our coaches care deeply about improving,” says Gordon-Poorman. “They constantly collaborate, support each other, and ask for feedback. It’s a bit like a school—everyone follows the same teaching philosophy, but the personality of the coach makes each experience unique.”

Coach Diana Carvajalino, a former top junior from Venezuela and Division II college player, says the environment plays a big role. “Southlake is incredibly welcoming. The players are committed, and that makes coaching here so rewarding.”

Stephen continues to mentor the staff, often bringing in outside experts to help them grow. “That culture of curiosity and support is something we’re really proud of,” adds Gordon-Poorman. “It’s part of what makes this place feel like home.”

THE BUSINESS OF BELONGING

Behind the Southlake Tennis Center’s success is the strategic and deeply personal partnership of the Poormans. While Poorman focuses on coaching and player development, Gordon-Poorman manages operations, programming and the long-term vision—bringing together their complementary strengths to create a thriving hub for both sport and community.

Their teamwork has helped the center grow into a powerhouse of local and regional play. With over 30 adult league teams and 10 major tournaments each year, including USTA playoffs and sectionals, the facility doesn’t just serve residents—it draws players from across Texas, generating substantial economic value for Southlake. Visitors book hotel stays, dine locally, and explore the city’s shops, giving the tournaments a far-reaching impact beyond the courts.

“We run 10 major tournaments a year, three that are really significant, including USTA Playoffs for 18 and over teams in May, and USTA Sectionals for 18 and over teams in August. And we’ve always thought that was our way of giving back to the city because people stay in hotels, they have lunch or dinner and they go to Southlake Town Square,” says Gordon-Poorman, who estimates that each adult player spends an average $350 per tournament, including lodging, meals, shopping and other incidentals.

THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL

The Poormans’ approach is as thoughtful as it is effective. Whether organizing match schedules or managing a national tournament, they lead with purpose, empathy and excellence. “Rather than just providing open courts and hoping people would show up, we focused on organizing activity. We built leagues, created junior programs and helped people find teams. Most public tennis centers don’t do that; they just provide space,” explains Gordon-

As the Southlake Tennis Center celebrates its silver anniversary, it’s evident that the Poormans have created more than a tennis center. They’ve created a place where newcomers meet friends, parents find connection and kids grow into confident young adults.

“That’s really the philosophy at the heart of the Tennis Center: meet people where they are, give them what they need, and set them up to succeed,” says Gordon-Poorman. “Once they have that solid foundation, they can go on to enjoy tennis at any level they choose—and come back to it through -

WHAT'S ONE MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT PLASTIC SURGERY THAT YOU'D LOVE TO CORRECT?

That it’s all about vanity. In reality, plastic surgery is about restoring confidence, balance, and sometimes even function. Whether it’s breast reconstruction after cancer or a facelift to match how someone feels on the inside, it’s rarely “just cosmetic.”

WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A COSMETIC PROCEDURE—AND WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE PEOPLE WHO ARE STILL DECIDING?

A good candidate is someone who’s healthy, has realistic expectations and is making the decision for themselves. If you’re still deciding, we encourage you to ask questions, take your time, and think long-term. Surgery is not a shortcut—it’s a tool when used thoughtfully.

WHAT SHOULD SOMEONE EXPECT WHEN THEY WALK INTO YOUR OFFICE FOR THE FIRST TIME?

Warmth, honesty, and no pressure. Our team is here to listen, educate, and build a plan that aligns with your goals and lifestyle.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE SCIENCE, PRECISION, AND EMPATHY IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY WORK?

Plastic surgery is the perfect blend of science and artistry—but empathy is what grounds it all. We use precision and evidence-based techniques to get natural, long-lasting results, but we never lose sight of the person.

WHAT’S IT LIKE SERVING PATIENTS IN SOUTHLAKE, AND HOW HAS THE COMMUNITY SHAPED YOUR PRACTICE?

Southlake is full of busy, high-performing people who want to look and feel their best. That’s shaped our practice into one focused on efficient, natural results that fit into real-life schedules and goals.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WORKING IN NORTH TEXAS?

The connection. It still feels like a small town where relationships matter. We see familiar faces, support local families, and feel truly honored to be part of such a warm, driven community.

“Helping patients overcome what once felt impossible is an incredible privilege.”

TOP DOCS

Nicholas Ferraro, M.D., FAANS

IS THERE A PARTICULAR CASE OR CONDITION YOU FIND ESPECIALLY REWARDING TO TREAT?

The most rewarding cases are those where I can offer hope after others have said, “There’s nothing more that can be done.” Helping patients overcome what once felt impossible is an incredible privilege.

WHAT’S SOMETHING OUTSIDE OF YOUR PROFESSION THAT YOU LOVE DOING?

I love to cook. There’s something both relaxing and deeply satisfying about creating a meal from scratch.

“BRAIN SURGERY” CAN SOUND INTIMIDATING. HOW DO YOU HELP PATIENTS FEEL CALM AND CONFIDENT?

Patients take cues from my demeanor, so it’s important they know they’re in steady, capable hands. I believe in full commitment – I personally manage every aspect of my patients' neurosurgical care. Patients feel reassurance in knowing I will be by their side every step of the way.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A NEUROSURGEN?

I knew I wanted to become a neurosurgeon as early as third grade. I did a book report on the brain, and it sparked a lifelong fascination. That early moment of discovery turned into a passion that has never faded.

“We love it when we can alleviate a patient’s pain and provide a comfortable experience."

Advanced Endodontics of Texas

WHAT’S ONE COMMON MYTH OR MISCONCEPTION ABOUT YOUR FIELD THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SET STRAIGHT?

A lot of people assume having a root canal is very painful. However, with adequate dental anesthesia, having a root canal can actually be a comfortable experience.

WHAT’S ONE RECENT ADVANCEMENT OR PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY THAT HAS CHANGED THE WAY YOU APPROACH CARE?

The advent of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) technology has truly allowed dentists and specialists to see in the “3rd” dimension, which traditional radiographs do not provide. We can see and learn so much more about the tooth and surrounding bone, which helps us diagnose and treat more accurately.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WORKING IN NORTH TEXAS?

The people! We are super blessed to have an amazing, kind, compassionate and respectful team to work with us. We love helping our patients - that’s the best part of our job.

WHAT MAKES YOUR WORK DIFFERENT FROM A GENERAL DENTIST?

We are dental specialists that perform root canals and root surgeries. We typically see patients who are experiencing pain, and our goal is to help alleviate that pain while saving the tooth, so it does not have to be extracted.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON ISSUES YOU SEE WALK THROUGH THE DOORS?

Low back pain is extremely common. It is estimated that 85% of all adults experience back pain at some point.

WHAT MAKES THE APPROACH AT SPINE TEAM TEXAS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PRACTICES?

The treatment of back pain typically takes a siloed approach where a patient might see multiple health care providers without much communication amongst them. We take an approach where we have all medical subspecialists and treatment options in one setting to allow for comprehensive management.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO WATCH SOMEONE FINALLY FIND RELIEF FROM BACK PAIN?

This is the reason I love my job. It is the most gratifying feeling to know that you have helped a person resolve a very painful episode in their life.

WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO HELPING PATIENTS WHO ARE NERVOUS ABOUT INJECTIONS OR SURGERY?

We have a philosophy of trying to get patients better without surgery. If surgery is required, we utilize a minimally invasive approach in the vast majority of our patients. Less than 10% of patients require surgery and we have patient satisfaction scores of 96%.

STATE-OF-THE-ART BODY CONTOURING

North Texas Plastic Surgery Is Your Trusted Aesthetic Partner

Harvard Medical School graduate Dr. Sacha Obaid founded North Texas Plastic Surgery with a small boutique office in Southlake 17 years ago. His focus from the start has been on providing exceptional breast and body contouring results in a state-of-the-art environment. His passion and attention to detail has grown North Texas Plastic Surgery to five locations across the metroplex, four attending plastic surgeons, a dedicated anesthesia group, five medical spas and a flagship surgical center in Southlake with six fully accredited operating rooms. Last year, North Texas Plastic Surgery placed over 2,000 breast implants and sculpted the waists of hundreds of women in Southlake through their unique mommy makeover, making them an easy choice for plastic surgery.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Casey Anderson specializes in natural-looking results. His patients rave about his attention to detail, his eye for proportions and ratios and his drive to get every patient looking fantastic. His tummy tucks feature not only great curves but also some of the best-looking belly buttons around.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Grant Bond recently joined the team after training at Duke University, Meharry Medical College and the University of Alabama Birmingham.

“I love North Texas Plastic Surgery! I’ve done several procedures and I’m super happy with the results.”
— Daniel M.

He specializes in both facial and body aesthetics.

Board-eligible plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Arvind Manisundaram, or Dr. Mani, recently completed his fellowship with us at North Texas Plastic Surgery (2024–2025). His background includes medical school at UT Southwestern, general surgery training in New York, and a plastic surgery fellowship at UT Health Houston. He has a well-rounded skill set with interests in rhinoplasty, facelifts, and body contouring.

Associate and board-eligible plastic surgeon Dr. Jeremy Bosworth is a father of two with a passion for fitness. This passion has led him to dedicate his body contouring skills to delivering slender athletic waists.

Fantastic surgical results and experiences are dependent not only on the surgeon but also on the anesthesia, and that’s where Dr. Maulik Parikh comes in. As a board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Parikh knows the operations, the patients and the recovery and ensures that everything runs smoothly.

Beyond surgery, North Texas Plastic Surgery also offers a full range of Med Spa services such as Botox, Juvederm and Restylane, laser treatments such as Sciton’s BBL, Halo, Coolsculpting and Morpheus 8, and surgical recovery aids such as the Balancer Pro.

Dragon Tale

HOW CISD'S LEGENDARY MASCOT BECAME A SOUTHLAKE ICON

In Southlake, the Dragon doesn’t just breathe fire—it breathes life into a tradition of excellence.

School spirit runs deep at Carroll campuses, and there’s one symbol that unites students, alumni and fans alike: the iconic Carroll Dragon. But few know the fiery tale of how this legendary mascot came to be.

The story begins in the 1950s at the then-small Car roll Common School. In search of a team name for their co-ed softball squad, a young student named Tony Eu banks suggested something bold and fierce: “The Drag ons.” The name stuck.

Decades later, as Carroll Independent School District was officially formed, the hunt for a signature Dragon logo began. The inspiration came from an unexpect ed source: the U.S. Navy’s VAQ-130 Electronic Attack Squadron, famously known as the "Zappers." Founded in 1959, the Zappers were an elite electronic warfare unit whose emblem featured a fire-breathing dragon— an image that captured both strength and agility.

In 1984, Carroll freshman Shawn Lynch was asked by a teacher to redesign the Zappers' logo to fit the school’s growing identity. The result? A fierce, modern dragon set against the outline of Texas. “The next year it was on the football helmets,” Lynch recalled. “I was pretty proud of it.”

Carroll Hall of Honor Inductee and Former Football Coach and Athletic Director Bob Ledbetter embraced the new symbol, and from that point on, the Dragon was a movement as well as a mascot.

By 1986, Lynch’s design graced the school yearbook cover. Today, more than 40 years later, that same dragon lives on, proudly displayed on everything from letterman jackets and sideline banners to coffee mugs, pillows, and smartphone cases.

Carroll isn’t alone in its portrayal of the mythical beast. Today, across Texas, the Dragon stands tall as a surprisingly popular school mascot—at least eight high schools and junior colleges sport the fiery symbol. From Nacogdoches High School’s “Golden Dragons” in East Texas to Dallas’ Seagoville High and Southwest High in San Antonio, the creature is a time-tested favorite. It’s also the mascot of Dawson High in rural Welch, Texas, as well as Paducah High in the Panhandle and Bangs High in West Texas. This statewide fascination with Dragons makes Carroll ISD’s own Southlake Dragon not just homegrown history, but part of a broader, roaring Texan legacy.

The high school and senior high school are not the only guardians of the Dragon’s Den, either, with the mascot found all throughout the district at elementa-

artwork—it’s sacred turf. Eighth-graders pass down a “guard-the-dragon” tradition – stepping on the mosaic is unthinkable. And every fall, new kindergartners join Club Charlie, welcoming them into Dragon Nation with yard signs and a chance to meet Charlie himself—the friendly dragon mascot named in honor of legendary coach Charlie Stalcup.

Today, the Dragon logo is officially trademarked by Carroll ISD, making it one of the most recognizable and protected high school brand identities in the nation. It’s a hot-ticket design that adorns everything from bumper stickers to YETI coolers to designer-level spiritwear. It’s worn with just as much pride by debate champions, choir members and robotics teams as it is by statechampion athletes.

To wear the Carroll Dragon logo is to carry more than just school spirit—it’s to embody a legacy of excellence, pride and unbreakable unity. It means standing on the shoulders of champions, honoring decades of tradition, and fueling the fire that drives future generations. Whether you're a kindergartner in Club Charlie or a senior under Friday night lights, being a Dragon is a badge of belonging.

The Founder Of The Gatehouse On Hope, Healing And Giving Women A Hand Up

Longtime Southlake resident Lisa Rose knows that transformation starts with more than good intentions. After years of community engagement through First Friday, a free motivational speaker series for women, she realized that inspiration alone wasn’t enough – women navigating crisis needed a system of support: legal advice, childcare, career training and counseling. In 2015, Lisa launched The Gatehouse, a first-of-its-kind residential community in Grapevine offering single women and their children a chance to rebuild their lives through long-term, sustainable change. Ten years in, The Gatehouse has now helped more than 800 women and children take meaningful steps toward independence. Now, Lisa is expanding her vision again with a new vocational education initiative aimed at launching careers that stabilize women and the families who depend on them.

SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE… a woman reaching a family-sustaining wage without government assistance, seeing her children begin to thrive socially, academically and emotionally. That transformation is permanent, and that is the definition of success.

IT ALL STARTED IN 2008 WITH PROJECT HANDUP… which hosted a free monthly event called First Friday held at Hooky Entertainment [then called Harkins Theatre], featuring speakers who addressed important topics for women - giving them a hand up to positively navigate life’s challenges. Through those years, it was clear that many women needed more than a speaker event and book signing. They also needed practical resources and relationships for help with finances, resolution of legal issues, healthcare, childcare, transportation, professional counseling and more. We needed a physical place for their transformation to be permanent.

FROM THERE, THE IDEA OF THE GATEHOUSE… was born. Our community was built in 18 months, debt-free. Through the years, we have constantly evaluated the program, doing everything possible so each family leaves with new hope and experiences the dignity of earned success.

THE GATEHOUSE PROGRAM IS KNOWN AS… the very best place for single women to experience real hope, receive the opportunity to achieve their goals and experience the dignity of earned success.

THE NEW VOCATION TRACK IS… designed for those completing trade or vocational school programs or pursuing an associate’s degree in STEM-related fields. The new program includes a scholarship to help with school costs for every incoming Vocation Track woman, thanks to an initial gift to the scholarship fund from the mikeroweWORKSFoundation. With the Northeast Texas area becoming the third-largest growing area

in the country, this is a prime time to help both women who need to begin a career and local businesses who need to expand their workforce. It’s a win-win for everyone.

I HAVE WITNESSED FIRSTHAND… what receiving a hand up versus a handout does for one’s dignity. Confirming what research shows, which is that a large part of our happiness in life comes from adding value to the world around us through work. We definitely need a system for those who cannot work and for those who need emergency assistance during their trying circumstances – but for those who are ready and have the ability to work, true happiness and dignity is the result.

THE 800 WOMEN AND CHILDREN WE’VE SERVED… are important because each number represents a person, who might be our neighbor and who is worth every bit of the investment.

WE’VE DISCOVERED THE SCIENCE OF… hope. Hope has been defined as the belief that your future can be better than your past, and you play a major role in making it happen. [It’s] this inward belief that causes some people to be resilient in order to overcome trauma and some to be stuck. We’ve seen this to be true – one can learn resilience and hope.

ONE STORY THAT STILL GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS… happened while I was at a pharmacy waiting on a vaccine. The woman working at the counter stated she attended First Friday, and she was so happy it led to the creation of The Gatehouse. The pharmacist behind her began to cry, and as she gave me my vaccine, told me she was a Gatehouse graduate.

WHEN WE SEE WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY… who have come through the program and the academic, emotional and social success of their children – that’s our letter to the world.

Iif you’re looking for an unforgettable dining experience, Nuri Steakhouse in Dallas needs to be on your radar.

Step inside, and be instantly transported. Designed by AvroKO, the 9,500-square-foot space pulses with elegance: gold-leaf ceilings, mood lighting, a wall of Korean ceramics and a glass wine vault. With its modern interiors, expertly curated wine lists and sizzling plates that blend Eastern finesse with classic steakhouse indulgence, Nuri offers a refreshing take on upscale dining. Whether you're a devoted foodie or simply looking to elevate your night out, step-

ping into Nuri is like entering a world where flavor and atmosphere reign.

Recently named one of the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants – no. 84, to be exact – Nuri stands out as a must-visit destination for steak lovers and dining-out aficionados. Among the top 100 restaurants, Nuri is one of only 19 listed U.S. restaurants and three in Texas.

Steakhouses are near-sacred entities in Dallas and the surrounding metroplex, and Nuri is at the forefront. “Words cannot express how humbled and honored we are to share this recognition,” said Wan Kim, owner. “We are immensely grateful to our dedicated team and to

the guests who have supported us from day one. This milestone is only the beginning.”

The usual steakhouse staples are also available at Nuri: ribeye, filet and New York strip. But they come with a passport.

At the heart of Nuri’s acclaim is its Akaushi beef, a rare Japanese Wagyu breed known as the “Emperor’s Breed.” Taking a bite of the famous Akaushi beef is like experiencing luxury in its purest, most primal form. The moment your fork glides through the cut, you know it’s different—velvety, almost butter-soft, with just enough sear to give a whisper of smokiness. As it hits your tongue, the rich marbling melts effortlessly, releasing layers of deep, umami-packed flavor that linger long after the bite is gone. There’s a balance—intensity without heaviness, decadence without overindulgence—that makes each bite feel indulgent, yet refined. It’s not just steak; it’s an awakening for your palate.

While all Akaushi is Wagyu, not all Wagyu achieves the level of excellence that Akaushi brings to the table, Kim said. And if steak isn’t your thing, there’s king salmon, a 14-day dryaged Australian lamb rack or Japanese miso sea bass to wet your appetite.

The menu itself is the result of a unique collaboration between Michelin-recognized Chef Minji Kim from South Korea and Executive Chef Mario Hernandez. Together, they merge Asian traditions with Southern flavor, crafting dishes that are sophisticated, adventurous quality

Texas and Aussie-Japanese Wagyu seared in a 1,600-degree Jade broiler, paired with Kostyle mac and flavored

The impeccable dining experience at Nuri doesn’t stop at its food. Their wine program, curated by Master Sommelier Barbara Werley, elevates every meal. Werley is one of just 34 female Master Sommeliers worldwide – and one of only 14 in Texas – with expertise that ensures every wine pairing perfectly complements the flavors on your plate. With curated selections designed to match the intensity of Nuri’s dishes, diners can expect nothing short

Nuri’s inclusion on the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants list wasn’t by chance. The evaluation included nine steps of criteria that needed to be met, including meat quality, service, menu transparency, international online presence and overall restaurant design. Nuri aced each category, solidifying its reputation as a world-class dining destination in just eight

Welcome To La La Land

Southlake’s Newest Obsession

Pouring Kindness With Every Cup

Bright, sun-soaked and unapologetically cheerful, La La Land Kind Café is Southlake’s newest obsession — and it’s easy to see why. From its iconic white-andyellow palette and cascading chandeliers to its signa ture drinks and warm “Love you!” send-offs, this Dallasbased concept has quickly become more than just a coffee stop. It’s a full-on experience where you come for the matcha and stay for the mood.

What most locals don’t know? Southlake almost got its own La La Land years ago, when founder Francois Reihani seriously considered Southlake Town Square for the café’s second-ever location back in 2019. “I’ve loved Southlake from the beginning,” he says. “The community just felt right — family-oriented, welcoming, inspiring. We knew it would be a perfect fit.”

While the stars didn’t align at the time, the Southlake store is now everything Reihani envisioned and more. “The first time I walked in, I almost cried,” he says. “It finally felt like we had created the space we always dreamed of — a place where people genuinely connect.”

That spirit of connection flows straight into the menu. La La Land offers an imaginative selection of drinks ranging from classic lattes and pour-over coffee to standout house creations like the Lavender Bloom, Butterfly Matcha and Activated Charcoal Latte. Every order is customizable, and everything is made with organic, clean-label ingredients. The food menu leans light and fresh, with toast, overnight oats and colorful pastries perfect for pairing with your morning pick-meup. Simple as it sounds, the Classic Avocado Toast, with mashed avocado, chili flakes, lemon zest and cilantro, regularly tops the menu charts for good reason.

Nestled just off Southlake Boulevard, La La Land’s Southlake location feels like something out of a feelgood movie. With whimsical signage, polished interiors, communal seating and bright yellow accents, the café invites lingering, whether you’re meeting friends, taking a call or just enjoying a solo iced latte.

While La La Land’s deeper mission supports foster youth through internships and wraparound care, Reihani says the Southlake café is really about something simple and lasting: atmosphere. “People walk in and feel good,” he says. “That’s the magic.”

JENI’S

SPLENDID ICE CREAM

A cult favorite for a reason, Ohio-based Jeni’s, founded by James Beard award-winning cookbook author and ice cream maker Jeni Britton, brings bold, nostalgic flavors with unexpected depth. Southlake shoppers can scoop up popular picks like Brown Butter Almond Brittle or dig into seasonal stunners like the Root Beer Float, which earned high praise from Southlake Style’s marketing and sales director Nicole Tesoriero: “I wasn’t expecting it to have so much real root beer flavor! So good,” she says. With rotating flavors and a super-premi um texture, it’s a reason to visit the frozen section on the regular.

VAN LEEUWEN ICE CREAM

What started as a Brooklyn food truck is now a freezer-aisle favorite — and for good reason. Known for its ultra-creamy French-style base and uncon ventional flavors, Van Leeuwen delivers decadence in every pint and bar. The Strawberry Shortcake ice cream bars are a must-try, blending silky texture with crunchy coating and bursts of real fruit. Even staff writer Tim Glaze was floored by how good they are. “I’m not the biggest fan of strawberries, but these are delicious.”

KAURINA’S KULFI

Rooted in Indian tradition and crafted in Dallas, Kaurina’s offers a South Asian twist on frozen des sert with their ultra-creamy kulfi bars and pints. Unlike standard ice cream, kulfi is denser and slower to melt, with a luxurious texture that’s more like frozen custard than soft serve. The flavors are where it really shines, especially the Malai Cardamom Cream, which gently teases the taste buds with its delicate infusion of warm spices and floral sweetness. According to Southlake Style office manager Kelly Rose, “This is a pure delight. I did not expect that much of a yum factor with the cardamom.” The Mango is another standout, bursting with bright, tropical flavor that instantly transports you to a sunny day. Family-owned and made without eggs or preservatives, Kaurina’s is proof that tradition never goes out of style, especially when it tastes this good.

HELLENIKA CULTURED CREAMERY

Greek-inspired by way of Seattle, Hellenika brings a Mediterranean twist to traditional ice cream. Made with a creamy cultured base, these pints pack a rich tang that’s perfectly balanced by inventive flavors like Honey Lavender and London Fog. If this editor had to pick a favorite, it would be their Lemon Curd Cultured Gelato, hands down. It’s a grown-up treat that feels like a summer vacation in every spoonful.

Bayside Bliss In Rockport

Coastal Charm and Artful Living In South Texas Beach Town

Known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Rockport is the perfect getaway for those seeking relaxation, adventure and a dash of Texan charm.

Tucked along the Texas Gulf Coast, about 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi and a mere six hour drive from Southlake, Rockport is the kind of place where time slows down in the best way. With its laid-back allure, delicious local fare and soul-soothing scenery, this beach town has quietly transformed from hurricane recovery story to small-town triumph—and

travelers are taking notice. From captivating seaside views to its vibrant art scene, there is no shortage of activities to fill your days.

THE LIGHTHOUSE INN

No visit to Rockport is complete without a stay at The Lighthouse Inn, where every day begins with a breathtaking sunrise that colors the sky in hues of orange and pink. Enjoy your morning coffee on a private balcony or indulge in the inn's delicious daily breakfast spread featuring local favorites.

Hurricane Harvey ransacked The Inn – and the lighthouse, specifically – in 2017, but a rebuild that finished in 2019 includes what is now a totally refurbished hotel on the rocks of Aransas Bay.

Even if you aren’t staying for a night or two, The Inn is a must-visit and a perfect spot for an Instagram

From fresh seafood caught daily to Texas-style BBQ and locally crafted beers, the town offers a variety of dining experiences that reflect its coastal heritage and Southern charm. Be sure to catch a breezy dinner at one of the waterfront

Rockport is tailor-made for those who like to catch their own dinner – or swim alongside it. Embark on a fishing expedition to reel in redfish, speckled trout, flounder, or even venture offshore for tuna and snapper. If fishing isn’t your scene, dive into water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding. The area's walking trails and nature preserves are a spectacular place where you might encounter diverse wildlife. Finally, birdwatchers will be in heaven on a walk along the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, a top tourist spot where migrating hummingbirds, snowy egrets and blue herons can be seen.

As an added bonus, Rockport was one of the first beaches in Texas to be named a Blue Wave Beach, meaning the beach has been certified by the Clean Beaches Coalition as clean, safe and well-managed, with a focus on protecting human health and the environment. So spend all day on this breathtaking beach if you want – it’s one of the cleanest in the state.
