As Nicole and I recently slid into a familiar booth at Wildwood Grill, a family favorite for years, it was readily apparent we were embarking on some less familiar territory. With two kids now officially in college, dinner time has begun to take on a whole new flavor.
At home or at any one of the many amazing Southlake area restaurants, we’ve made the most of family meals. As my girls take in ramen noodles and the like, our only hope is to steer clear of TV trays and Jeopardy! answers as long as possible. ‘What is Taco Tuesday’ without the kids, anyway?
The kids may not be at our table as often, but there still is plenty of promise. We are likely to dine out more often, exploring Southlake’s ever-expanding restaurant scene, especially those found in this month’s annual Dining Guide.
No matter where you dine, the real value of family meals is not found in the food itself, but rather in the bonds of simmering mealtime conversation. Southlake resident Courtney Johnson, through her nonprofit Culinary Care, has proven once again how powerful a shared meal can be. Her work in providing meals for families in the throes of healthcare reminds us all that sitting down to eat together nourishes more than our bodies — it creates memories, comforts in hard times and even heals.
As Nicole and I adjust to this new chapter, we find ourselves more grateful than ever for the years of noisy, crowded tables — and hopeful we’ll still create new memories across smaller ones. Southlake’s dining options may keep changing, but at its heart, the experience is the same — meals are mostly about who you’re with.

The Power of a Meal
CULINARY CARE FOUNDER AND CEO COURTNEY JOHNSON TURNS GRIEF INTO A LASTING LEGACY
Culinary Care CEO Courtney Johnson knows connecting over meals creates core memories. Whether she was finishing homework at the table watching family members cook or whipping up another rendition of her claim to fame — “stir-fry Fridays” — Courtney grew up valuing the comfort and connection that a good meal can bring.
That love originally found in her childhood kitchen has since grown into a national nonprofit that supports thousands of people undergoing cancer treatments. What was once an idea is now a 12-year-old operation that delivered more than $275,000 worth of free, restaurant-prepared lunches to 1,041 patients in both Chicago and Dallas last year.
Through Culinary Care’s growth, the current Southlake mom has learned great things start with small acts of kindness.
THE START OF CULINARY CARE
Courtney grew up in the Chicago suburbs, where she fondly remembers a childhood filled with nights cooking alongside her parents and younger siblings.
“We had the good fortune of living our lives centered around meals,” Courtney says. “Food has always been my love language, and meals were the focal point of everything we did.”
When her father was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer as Courtney headed into her senior year of high school, everything changed.
“He was the first person in my life I was close to that was going through this diagnosis in such an aggressive way,” Courtney says. “I knew people in our community who were navigating a cancer diagnosis, but it’s very different when it’s happening to you.”
While her family was with her dad in the hospital, loved ones brought them daily meals. Alongside countless lasagnas and casseroles, Courtney remembers one family dropping off a big pot of chili. Instead of leaving them with plastic cutlery, the family friends suggested they eat it using Tostito scoops.
Those small gestures gave Courtney’s family something to look forward to during an otherwise emotionally draining period.
“It changed the mindset of our day,” Courtney says. “We were excited to share this moment of normalcy and talk about something that wasn’t cancer.”
After Courtney’s father passed, she realized the world was not going to stop; she remembers sitting at the kitchen table studying for the ACTs while her mom planned her father’s funeral at the other end.
“There was a lot of time I wasn’t able to process how I was going to bounce forward and grieve,” Courtney says.
Courtney grew up volunteering for different organizations. She credits her parents for instilling the importance of giving back. After graduating from the University of Arizona with a BA in Communications and Creative Writ-

ing in 2011 and moving back home to Chicago, Courtney sought out opportunities to support people who had been diagnosed with cancer.
“I wanted to bring meals to people going through the same thing I did. Whether it was preparing the meal or getting it, I wanted everyone to have the level of support I had,” Courtney explains. “I found there was nothing that existed.”
After talking about the gap in support with her nowhusband, the two considered how they could help. With her dad’s legacy in mind, Courtney founded Culinary Care in 2013 with a mission to nourish cancer recoveries through community support and good meals.
“My dad loved food and loved the experience of dining out,” Courtney says. “I was in a place to give back, and I wanted to be involved. I thought, ‘Let’s try to help one person, and we can keep building from there.’”
After filing for the organization’s 501(c)(3), Courtney reached out to local restaurants. She found interested vendors willing to donate dishes and put up flyers in cancer centers sharing a simple but powerful message: “Take the time to nourish and heal, let us deliver you free meals.”
It didn’t take long for the first participant, a woman who had just moved to Chicago and was diagnosed with breast cancer, to sign up. Courtney hand-delivered the first meal in March 2013 during her day job’s lunch break. After a few days, Courtney sent a check-in email, and the woman responded with a four-page thank-you letter.
“She wrote, ‘your goodness, grace and kindness have restored my faith in humanity,’” Courtney remembers. “If that was the difference we could make with just one meal, I knew we had to keep going.”
With a proof of concept, Culinary Care grew slowly. In the nonprofit’s first year, Culinary Care delivered around 240 meals to 22 patients thanks to the help of three restaurant partners.
“We took it one person at a time,” Courtney says. “The biggest challenge wasn’t necessarily the logistics. Rather, it was having the confidence. There were plenty of times I questioned, ‘Why me? Am I the right person?’ Very early on, many people would pat me on the back and say, ‘Good luck. Call me in three years.’ But that only fueled me.”
As Culinary Care expanded, Courtney gained a deeper understanding of the significance of nutrition for individuals undergoing cancer treatment. According to a 2024 study published in Cancer Biology and Medicine, “approximately 20% of cancer patient deaths are directly attributable to malnutrition.” That, topped with the fact that studies indicate “loneliness may be associated with an increased risk of mortality in cancer patients,” pushed Courtney forward.
“This is more than a nice gesture; it has the potential to save someone’s life,” Courtney explains. “It’s easy to think of us as a meal delivery service, but that’s only half our name. We are a lifeline for our patients far beyond the food: checking in, making phone calls, writing birthday

cards, making chemo care kits for people. We want them to see us as their neighbor and friend. Someone they can count on unconditionally for as long as they’re in treatment.”
After two and a half years of spreading awareness, building connections with treatment facilities, increasing the number of participants served, and delivering meals, Courtney joined Culinary Care full-time. In 2016, she hired the nonprofit’s first part-time driver. A few months later, Culinary Care received a grant from Tyson Foods, which supported the hiring of an additional employee. Today Culinary Care has 10 employees.
“Every year, we’re reaching at least 30% more families,” Courtney says. “We were very intentional about when we hire, when we make bigger investments, and how that helps families currently in our program and families who we know are waiting for our programs to reach them.”
In 2022, Courtney’s family relocated to Dallas for her husband’s work. Culinary Care’s board of directors always aspired to grow the nonprofit beyond the city’s borders. Having Courtney on the ground presented the perfect opportunity.
“Based on the requests we received nationwide, including from Dallas, we knew the need was there,” Courtney explains. “We always envisioned being national. It wasn’t a question of if, but when.”
She trusted the Chicago team she built to carry out the nonprofit’s mission.
four to twelve hours of treatment, leaving patients with limited options.
She found locals eager to join the team, like Kelly Kemp and Jim Yates, Culinary Care’s community relations and program managers, respectively. With their support, Courtney contacted treatment facilities and launched the program.
“Dallas has amazing restaurants and cancer centers committed to comprehensive care,” Courtney says. “The restaurant community has opened its arms to us.”
John McBride, the owner of El Vecino Tex Mex in East Dallas, was one of the first to join Culinary Care’s Dallas efforts. Kelly frequented the restaurant, with a fitting name that translates to “the neighbor” in English. When she told John about the nonprofit’s mission, he was immediately interested.
“If that was the difference we could make with just one meal, I knew we had to keep going.”
— Courtney Johnson
“We have an incredible team on the ground in Chicago. They go above and beyond to ensure our families have one less thing to worry about,” Courtney boasts.
When Culinary Care looked to its 10th anniversary in 2023, Courtney set their most ambitious goal yet: deliver 10,000 meals — an 80% increase from the previous year.
“Being able to say that our team was able to hit this goal without my full-time presence, that was incredible to see as a founder,” Courtney says.
BRINGING CULINARY CARE TO TEXAS
When looking for where to establish roots in the Metroplex, Courtney’s family felt drawn to Southlake.
“The first time we were driving around, we noticed people would wave at us,” Courtney says. “That was not something we had experienced elsewhere. People just made us feel like we were a part of a community.”
After the young family settled in, Courtney established Culinary Care’s North Texas presence. With major Texas cancer centers just a short drive away from Southlake, Courtney knew she could make a difference for people undergoing treatment in Dallas.
Courtney found the same need in Texas, witnessing patients going through a day of chemo without access to quality food and needing more support. Most hospitals do not provide meal services unless you’re spending the night, and chemotherapy can consist of anywhere from
“We are helping satisfy people in their time of need with immediacy, which I really like,” John explains.
The process is simple: Kelly emails John a few days before the scheduled pickup with how many people they are looking to feed, and he fulfills orders. Patients select from the expansive menu; the El Cuenco Salad and Spinach Enchiladas are currently the most popular dishes. Kelly also sends John pictures, so he can see the impact.
“It’s seamless,” John says. “It’s nice to see people who have a lot on their plates simply just enjoy a different kind of meal.”
Breana Mobley, a licensed master social worker at Texas Oncology-Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center in Dallas, learned about Culinary Care last August and knew it would be integral to the facility’s patient care and improving patient outcomes.
“I was blown away with what I saw,” Breana says. “We know how pervasive food insecurity and isolation are to our patients for a number of different reasons, but there was nothing that addressed it.”
After going through the integration process, the nonprofit slowly began bringing meals to the cancer center. Now, Culinary Care delivers meals twice a week to those registered.
“It’s a night and day difference,” Breana says. “You can see [the patients’] body language relax knowing they have someone there who cares about them. And our patients get to pick what they get, which brings back a sense of autonomy – something that’s diminished while you’re going through cancer. ”
Kelly is now a known face at Texas Oncology-Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center.
”The team has a heart for the mission and dedicates the time to build relationships,” Breana says. “It’s just somebody who cares about you, who puts a smile on your face, and who brings you quality food. But the impact cannot be overstated: It nourishes our patients on the basic level of needing food to fuel their body but also having that need for connection.”
Breana says Culinary Care has improved the sense of community amongst the patients.
“Having meals delivered encourages our patients to interact with each other more,” Breana says. “It’s like the food ends up breaking a barrier between the patients.”
Culinary Care recipient Sharhonda Deloach knows how Kelly’s smile can brighten up the treatment room. After being diagnosed with multiple myeloma during her pregnancy, Sharhonda began treatment at the Texas Oncology-Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center in January.
“I remember I was coming [to my treatment] alone because my support system was caring for my daughter,” Sharhonda explains. “In walks Kelly with her bright personality and bright smile. [Culinary Care] was one of the most painless and selfless things that’s entered my life at this time. It’s something that feeds not just your body but feeds your spirit.”
A GREATER IMPACT
In 2024, Culinary Care delivered more than $270,000 worth of free restaurant-prepared meals to 1,041 patients, located across Chicago and Dallas, with the help of 15 restaurant partners. Courtney believes the nonprofit is on
pace for an 88% increase in demand this year, with nearly 2,000 families seeking services. While the nonprofit has grown, Courtney strives to take a human-centered approach, so each individual feels valued. While she started the organization out of a personal need to keep her dad’s legacy alive, Culinary Care has blossomed thanks to the nonprofit’s supporters.
“In 2013, we didn’t have a program. We had an idea,” Courtney says. “The people, donors and volunteers have turned Culinary Care into what it is today.”
What once was a spark of an idea has grown into a national nonprofit changing lives. Courtney proves a single person has the power to transform someone’s day, outlook, and future with a small act of kindness.
“Courtney may never know how many people she has impacted,” Sharhonda says. “I am really inspired by her taking her pain and turning it into purpose. I can’t imagine how proud her family must be for what she’s started.”
Hear from Courtney herself at our 2025 Women’s Luncheon on Oct. 17.

TOP Lawyers 2025
RACHEL MONTES
BOARD CERTIFIED PERSONAL INJURY TRIAL LAWYER
When the unthinkable happens to your family, you need more than just an attorney – you need a fighter who won’t back down. Rachel Montes is that fighter.
Rachel is among the fewer than 1% of Texas attorneys board certified in personal injury trial law – the highest and most demanding credential in the field. This elite certification signals more than expertise; it’s a promise that when corporations and insurers try to minimize your suffering, she’s the advocate you want in your corner.
Based in Southlake, where she’s raised her son and built her practice, Rachel has spent her career leveling the playing field for families facing overwhelming odds. Her record includes multiple seven- and eightfigure verdicts and settlements across Texas and New Mexico, each representing lives changed and justice achieved.
In 2024, she became only the sixth woman elected President of the prestigious Dallas Trial Lawyers Association – a role that reflects the respect she commands among her peers. As a faculty member at the Trial Lawyers College, she not only wins at the highest level but teaches others how to do the same.
Rachel has gone up against trucking companies, negligent drivers, pharmaceutical giants and corporations responsible for nursing home abuse and workplace injuries. But her courtroom success is only part of the story; what truly sets Rachel apart is her personal approach. Her clients aren’t case numbers; they’re people she fiercely fights for.
“I learn your story, the story of your family and your loss – so I can put it all back together,” she says.
With relentless preparation, deep compassion and unmatched legal skill, Rachel Montes delivers what powerful corporations fear most: an advocate who never settles for less than full justice. When tragedy strikes, Rachel doesn’t just represent you – she stands beside you.

Whata-Time To Be Alive
From Curb Service To Cult Status, Whataburger Celebrates 75 years
Swarms of students from nearby towns are crammed into booths, rehashing events from their football games and discussing plans for the weekend. The fries are hot, the burgers are made to order and the shakes are creamy.
It’s Friday night at the Whataburger in Grapevine.
This isn’t a scene specific to our area. Whataburgers all over the state have become the official clubhouse of post-Friday night football. Win or lose, each town’s restaurant sees an influx of students following a game, as they pile into booths still wearing jerseys, letterman jack-
ets and sparkly drill team uniforms. Flash back seventy-five years, to a Corpus Christi man with a vision.
That man was Harmon Dobson, and his dream was simple: create a burger so big it takes two hands to hold, and so tasty it makes you exclaim, “What a burger!” Fast-forward to 2025, and Whataburger has become a full-blown Southern institution, boasting more than 1,100 locations across 17 states.
“For three-quarters of a century, we’ve been more than just a burger stop – we’ve been a part of family road trips, late-night cravings and hometown traditions,” said George Gonzalez,
Whataburger Brand Leader. “In Dallas, and across the Lone Star State, Whataburger has become woven into the fabric of our communities. It means the world to us to see generations of Texans come together around the table for a meal that feels like home.”
So, as the orange-and-white stripes celebrate their 75th anniversary, we take a bite out of their flavorful past, sizzling future and cult-like following. Somewhere, the Dobson’s are smiling.
75 YEARS: STILL HOME, STILL HERE
Despite Whataburger’s enormous popularity and ever-expanding footprint, the restaurant is still family owned and operated. Dobson’s wife, Grace, took over the business in 1967 and expanded Whataburger from a small hamburger shack in South Texas to a behemoth that’s still expanding across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Florida.
The food, of course, deserves top billing. Devotees praise not just the burgers, but the breakfast taquitos, Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits and the ability to customize orders down to the last pickle. This is not an exaggeration: there are over 36,000 ways to customize a Whataburger which is good news for the chain’s 60 million customers.
Disciples of the Dobson’s burgers know Whataburger isn’t just feeding people – it’s also feeding our local memories. Those sentiments became virtual law when the Seventy-seventh Texas Legislature recognized Whataburger as a “State Treasure” in 2001.
Currently, there are four Whataburger restaurants within a 20-mile radius of Southlake. Expand the search to a 30-mile radius, and that number jumps to 15 locations open 24 hours a day every day except Christmas.
GRAB YOUR SWAG
No matter where you indulge your cravings, Whataburger’s yearlong celebration includes a ton of specials on limited-edition merchandise, with certain items available in-store and online.
For the truly faithful, the standout collectible has been the 32-ounce commemorative cups, which are now available in four vibrant, limited-edition collections each celebrating a different slice of Whataburger history and seasonal themes.
The online Whatastore has also been releasing monthly limited-edition merch drops priced at $19.50, a nod to the brand’s founding year. Additional swag includes a stylish Wrangler x Whataburger capsule — denim jackets, graphic tees, ball caps and more, though not all priced at $19.50 — drawing rave reviews for its authentic Texas flair.
And then there’s the merchandise available daily. From iconic orange-and-white striped socks and retro tees to spicy-scented candles and YETI tumblers, every Whataburger item captures the spirit of the beloved burger chain. Whether you're rocking an orange-and-white hoodie on a chilly day or sipping your morning coffee from a Fancy Ketchup mug, the merch lets fans carry their love for Whataburger into their homes and lives.
Whether you're craving some merch or a classic Whataburger, crispy Whatachick’n strips, a fresh Garden Salad, or a Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit there’s something for all appetites to enjoy.
“Celebrating 75 years of Whataburger isn’t just a milestone,” Gonzalez said. “It’s a moment of deep Texas pride.”
Bistro Bliss
At ELLA, Comfort Fare
Master Mixology Take Center Stage
Step through the softly lit patio and into a space where old-world charm meets modern allure. Earthy green paneled walls wrap around rosy red tile, globe chandeliers float nearly 12 feet overhead and a warm hum of conversation spills from cozy booths and the polished marble bar. Welcome to ELLA, Dallas’ newest neighborhood bistro, designed for lingering evenings, exceptional cocktails and food that comforts as much as it impresses.
Opened in June in the former home of Chido Taco Lounge, ELLA is the latest concept from local restaurateur Blaine McGowan. Intimate yet elevated, the 2,500-square-foot space features 63 seats (plus a 600-square-foot mezzanine) and a feminine design aesthetic that feels both polished and personal. Upstairs, guests can sneak behind velvet drapery to find Customs Speakeasy, where bartender Jairo Castillo crafts cocktails using premium Mexican spirits.
At the helm of the beverage program is Julian Shaffer, recipient of the 2024 MICHELIN Guide Texas Exceptional Cocktails Award for his masterful mixology at Rye. From the umami tang of the Shiso Gin & Tonic to the Salsa Verde Ranch Water with its tantalizing blend of tequila and mezcal with tomatillo and citrus, his creations blend technique with surprise.
In the kitchen, Executive Chef Kyle Farr (formerly of Sachet and Boulevardier) delivers elevated comfort fare, like Short Ribs with smoked sweet potato and red wine jus, or Shrimp & Masa Dumplings with roasted peppers and broccolini.
“We wanted to bring something to the neighborhood that wasn’t there — something welcoming and refined. Harvest Hall's Dock Local Channels East Coast Vibes
Throughout my years living in New York City, the one saving grace of sweltering subway days was the knowledge thatat some point each summer - I’d escape up the East Coast with friends, and we’d find some hidden gem to feast on lobster rolls. Warm, buttery, impossibly fresh, it was more than a meal. It was a seasonal rite of passage. Who would have expected to find that same experience just steps from Main Street in Grapevine?
Sure, it’s September, but this is Texas, and judging by the temps outside, we’re still firmly in summer territory. En ter Dock Local, tucked inside Grapevine’s Harvest Hall at Hotel Vin. Their Connecticut-style lobster roll (personal fa vorite) is everything it should be: claw-and-knuckle lobster drenched in garlic butter, tucked into a toasted roll and finished with chives. It’s decadent, salty-sweet and tastes like the vacation from your vacation you didn’t know you still needed. And even this far inland, the price still rivals those on the East Coast.
And if you think you’re just stopping by for the roll… well, good luck. The Garlic Lobster Fries are unmissable - crispy, cheesy, herby and generously piled with lobster. The Hot Crab Queso is rich and comforting with a Texas-style smoky kick, served with thick, house-made kettle chips that are practically addictive. Whether you’re ordering tacos, lobster mac or the over-the-top Lobster Grilled Cheese, the flavor that Dock Local delivers feels coastal and completely elevated.
But Dock Local isn’t just about what’s on the plate - it’s about how it makes you feel. From the casual vibe to the friendly team behind the counter, it’s clear this place was built to bring people together over seriously good food. Every dish is made from scratch using high-quality ingredients, with coastal classics reimagined for Texas cravings. And yes, their beach-loving pelican mascot, T.D., may prefer ocean views, but they’re a little easier to imagine with a lobster roll in hand.

Stella Ristorante Chef Shares Her Recipe for Success
For Paola Pedrignani, creating memorable dining experiences isn’t just a business—it’s her life’s calling. The architect-turned-restaurateur is the heart and soul behind Southlake’s Stella Ristorante where warmth, authenticity and Italian hospitality greet guests at the door. With a new café concept opening soon in Grapevine, Paola sat down with us to share what brought her to Texas, how her Italian roots and years in New York City still influence her, and why she believes food should feel like home.
IN 2019, I STARTED DREAMING OF… opening a restaurant somewhere more welcoming and with more potential than New York. I’ve owned a Mediterranean restaurant on the Upper East Side for 26 years, but after COVID, I knew I needed a changefor myself and my daughter.
THE FIRST TIME I VISITED SOUTHLAKE… I immediately felt something special. The community, the energy, the corner where Stella now stands — it all just clicked. After a long COVID delay, I came back in 2021 and found my spot. It felt like fate.
THE COMMUNITY HAS EMBRACED ME… with so much kindness. Texans have been unbelievably generous, and they appreciate authenticity. I try to give them a true Italian experience — not just through the food, but through the feeling. People come in and tell me they feel like they’ve traveled to Italy for the evening. That’s the best compliment I could receive.
SOUTHLAKE IS… warm. People smile, say hello, and truly want to connect. In New York, people are a bit more guarded. The pace here is healthier - for my daughter, for myself and for the business.
I’M AN ARCHITECT… by training, and I love designing my restaurants to feel like an extension of home. Stella was built with intention — every element was about creating comfort and warmth. I love it because I can do more with the space and the design here.
WE’RE OPENING STELLA CAFÉ ITALIANA… in Grapevine. It will be a more casual concept, offering Italian-style breakfast, pizza al taglio [by the slice]
and daily pastas, plus a full bar. It’s designed for takeout but has a beautiful space for sitting down with a spritz or a panino. I love that Grapevine is walkable - it reminds me a little of Europe. Eventually, I’d love to open something in the Fort Worth Stockyards, too. But for now, Southlake is my mothership.
I WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL JOY… real, Italian joy. When I was young and working as an au pair in the U.S., I fell in love with how people here greet you with a smile and a "hello." I never forgot that. So I aim to create that same sense of welcome and connection at Stella. Food is important, of course. But the feeling? That’s everything.
I’M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT… expanding Stella’s reach - but only in ways that feel authentic. Every detail matters to me: the tile, the color palette, the texture of the napkins. I want each location to reflect my personal touch. We’re also introducing new seasonal menus and chef’s dinners to bring more of that Italian storytelling to the table. Whether it’s a quick espresso or a lingering dinner, I want guests to feel transported, even just for a moment.
SEEING PEOPLE GATHER AND CONNECT… in the space I dreamed of - there’s nothing like it. I watch guests linger over wine, celebrate birthdays, introduce their kids to real Italian food… and it fills my heart. After so many years in New York, I was craving community, and here, I found it. I’m proud to be part of something that brings people joy and makes them feel at home.

MIRACLE LEAGUE SOUTHLAKE CELEBRATES A DECADE OF JOY, BASEBALL AND COMMUNITY
BY CYNTHIA NAUGHER: WITH PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE TEXAS RANGERS
On Saturday mornings each spring and fall at Bicentennial Park, something extraordinary happens. The sound of walk-up music echoes from the Miracle League Field, followed by raucous cheers as each player steps up to the plate. But this isn’t your average baseball game. It’s a place where every child, teen and adult with disabilities is celebrated like an all-star.
This year, Miracle League Southlake celebrates its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of transforming lives through baseball, inclusion and unshakable community spirit.
LA Field Where Everyone Wins
Founded in 2015, Miracle League Southlake is part of a national nonprofit movement that began in Georgia in 2000. Its mission is simple but powerful: give children and adults with disabilities the chance to play baseball in a safe, welcoming environment, and to surround them with a community that celebrates their strengths.
Since
2015, Miracle League Southlake has been part of a nationwide effort to give kids and adults with disabilities a safe, joyful way to play baseball and build community.
The heart of Miracle League? The buddy system — matching players with volunteers who offer support, encouragement and lasting friendship.
“The motto is that every child deserves a chance to play baseball,” says Mike Hutchison, president of the Southlake chapter. “Our players range from age five to over 50. We play two innings, everyone bats and the last batter always hits a home run. All games end in a tie - and in lots of joy.”
The field itself, which officially opened to much fanfare - and the help of the Texas Rangers - in 2013, was specially designed with a rubberized surface to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers. With 19 teams and over 260 players in the most recent season, the league has grown exponentially from its first year when organizers hoped for 75 players and ended up with 150.
“We were shocked in the best way,” recalls board member Joanne Terrell. “It was one of those good problems. We had to immediately rethink our setup to handle that many kids and volunteers. But we figured it out. We always do.”
The Power of Buddies
At the heart of Miracle League’s magic is the “buddy” system - a one-on-one pairing of players with volunteers, often local teens. Buddies don’t just assist on the fieldthey build lasting friendships.
Gabriella Tesoriero, a Carroll alum and former National Charity League volunteer, recalls the bond she formed with her buddy, Xavier. “We were paired together every game for two years. He loved dance battles and Fortnite. We had so much fun, and I learned how to be more patient, compassionate and open-minded,” she says. “It really got me out of my comfort zone.”
For many other high school athletes, volunteering with Miracle League is a transformative experience.
“I coach the Majors - the adult league - and I’ve had some of my players for the full ten years,” Johnny says. “They’re like family now. They root for each other, show up with smiles, and honestly, I don’t know who gets more out of it - them or me.”
While some divisions require buddies, Coach Johnny’s players are mostly self-sufficient. But that doesn’t mean the joy is any less.
“You see improvement, growth and real competition,” he adds. “They want to play, and they want to win. It’s beautiful.”
Ultimately, Miracle League is about more than baseball. It’s about belonging.
“These kids get to be on a team, wear a uniform, and hear their name called with walk-up music just like the pros,” says Mike. “We give them socks, windbreakers - even wristbands. They wear it all with pride.”
“It’s not just for the kids. The volunteers, the parentseveryone leaves feeling better."
— Coach John Finlayson
“We wanted to bridge the gap between the neurotypical community and the disability community,” Joanne explains. “And it worked. By week three of our very first season, kids at Carroll who used to pass each other without a word were high-fiving each other in the halls.”
Stories of transformation are woven into every game day. Both Mike and Joanne recall the same unforgettable moment from an early season: a young girl who was nonverbal and had never spoken before picked up a ball and said her first word: “Ball.”
“There wasn’t a dry eye,” says Mike. “Mom was crying, we were crying. That’s the kind of thing Miracle League does. We can’t cure what these kids are going through, but we can give them joy.”
The players’ excitement each Saturday is palpable.
“We’ve had parents tell us their kid wakes up five hours early, already dressed in uniform,” says Mike. “We also do a Parents Day, where the players can thank their parents for showing up. And then we feed everyone. We want this to be a break, a celebration - not another thing on a long list of hard things.”
Coaching With Heart
Coach John Finlayson, known to most as simply “Coach Johnny B,” has been there since the beginning. A former collegiate player and longtime Southlake resident and business owner, he was recruited by the then-president of the Southlake Parks Development Corporation, John Slocum, before the field was even built.
More Than a Game
Miracle League’s growth wouldn’t be possible without the tireless support of volunteers, sponsors like the Texas Rangers, and community organizations like National Charity League (NCL), Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) and Students and Athletes Serving Others (SASO). On any given Saturday, you’ll find over 150 buddies, dozens of coaches and dugout parents keeping things running.
“I’m not a morning person,” Joanne laughs. “But when I get out there and see those kids, I remember exactly why I do it.”
She estimates that about 95% of teams have been “adopted” by volunteer groups who commit to showing up weekly. Others sign up through the league’s website as individuals and are matched with a team. Some become “permanent buddies,” coming every Saturday, season after season, forming close bonds with their assigned athlete.
“Some kids need two or three buddies - we’ve had kids with endless energy who literally run back and forth the entire game,” Joanne adds. “It can be a workout! But it’s worth it.”
And when the baseball season ends? The friendships and impact linger.
“It’s not just for the kids,” Coach Johnny says. “The volunteers, the parents - everyone leaves feeling better. You show up thinking you’re doing something good for someone else, but you get so much more in return.
Looking Ahead
As the league enters its second decade, the focus remains on keeping the joy alive -- and making room for even more miracles.
“We’ve never turned anyone away,” Mike says. “And we never will. We’ll figure it out, grow a little more each year and keep showing up. That’s what community is.”
For those who haven’t yet experienced the magic firsthand, the invitation is open.
“Just come out and watch one Saturday,” says Coach Johnny. “You’ll get it. You’ll be hooked.”
As Gabriella put it best: “You realize how much these kids can do, and how much fun you can have just showing up. It really is a miracle.”

WHAT TYPE OF LAW DOES YOUR FIRM PRACTICE?
We take all family law, estate planning and probate cases. My staff and I focus on keeping clients out of the courtroom as much as possible by utilizing alternative dispute resolution methods such as collaborative divorce.
WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER FIRMS?
I am board-certified in family law and hold a master of law in dispute resolution. I am also master credentialed in collaborative law. Litigation is sometimes necessary, and being board-certified means I have lots of courtroom experience.
WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE KEEP IN MIND WHEN SEEKING AN ATTORNEY?
Litigation is expensive and generally doesn’t result in a “win” for anyone. If you can resolve your dispute using collaborative divorce or mediation, it will save you time and money, and you can avoid the stress of being involved in the court system.

ARTEMIS KOUROSH
WHAT TYPE OF LAW DOES YOUR FIRM PRACTICE?
I focus on estate planning, but I also practice probate and business law. On a daily basis, I work on wills, trusts and asset protection to ensure my clients have tranquility.
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH LAW?
As a small child, my parents took me to meet with their estate planning attorney, and he showed me the guardians I would have if something happened to them. I never forgot that meeting, because it showed me that even if the worst-case scenario happened, I wouldn’t be with a stranger. I strive to give that same peace to my clients.
WHAT AWARDS OR ACCOLADES HAS YOUR FIRM RECEIVED?
I have been named to Southlake Style’s Readers’ Choice and Top Attorneys list numerous times. I was also named to “D Magazine’s” Best Lawyers in DFW for 2023 and was nominated as Southlake’s Person of the Year in 2019.

WHAT TYPE OF LAW DOES YOUR FIRM PRACTICE?
We protect people being investigated or prosecuted for state and federal criminal offenses. Our proactive group of experts defend allegations ranging from capital murder to white collar crime.
WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE KEEP IN MIND WHEN HIRING AN ATTORNEY?
Find an attorney with a plan. If a lawyer is afraid to tell you about their strategy, they’re not ready to handle your case. At Cofer Luster, every client leaves the initial consultation with a detailed action plan. You can take it down the road to another attorney, but no one else can replicate the way we execute it.
WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER LAW FIRMS?
Two things: we don’t wait, and we live for the fight. While many lawyers react to the prosecution, we launch our own investigations immediately and push the case forward. This isn’t just our job — it’s our passion, and there is nothing we would rather do.

Refined dining in the heart of Oxford, MS
From Grits To Global
Four Foodie Havens Redefining The Southeast
From Michelin stars to down-home comfort food, the Southeast is a culinary playground of flavor, heritage and innovation. From the soulful kitchens of New Orleans to the creative charm of Oxford, Mississippi, each destination offers a distinct palate shaped by its culture, history, and local bounty. Whether you're craving refined Southern staples, fusion flair or iconic regional eats, these cities deliver.
CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA
Southern charm meets serious culinary clout in Charleston, where cobblestone streets and antebellum architecture set the scene for some of the country’s most innovative food. Charleston elevates Lowcountry cuisine. Think shrimp and grits, she-crab soup and fried green tomatoes — with refined technique and locally sourced ingredients. The city’s culinary renaissance is led by restaurants like Husk, where heir-
loom recipes are reimagined with a modern twist, and FIG, a James Beard–winning staple that champions seasonal flavors. For fresh oysters and coastal vibes, The Ordinary hits the mark. James Beard award winning Rodney Scott’s BBQ, meanwhile, is a pilgrimage site for whole-hog barbecue done right. But the magic of Charleston lies in its contrasts: fine dining lives comfortably alongside family-run joints like Bertha’s Kitchen and Hannibal’s Kitchen, where generational recipes feed the community. Farmers markets, food festivals and a deep-rooted hospitality culture round out the experience, making Charleston a must-visit for anyone who loves food with a sense of place.
Even if you aren’t staying for a night or two, The Inn is a must-visit and a perfect spot for an Instagram photo.
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA
In New Orleans, food isn’t just sustenance — it’s identity, ritual and celebration. This vibrant city
blends French, Creole, Cajun and African influences into a cuisine that’s uniquely its own. You’ll find iconic dishes like jambalaya, crawfish étouffée, and red beans and rice on menus from corner po’boy shops to white-linen restaurants. Commander’s Palace sets the bar for classic fine dining, while spots like Coquette and Compère Lapin showcase modern interpretations rooted in local tradition. Beignets from Café du Monde, muffulettas from Central Grocery and a cold sno-ball on a hot day are practically rites of passage. But it’s not just the dishes - it’s the vibe: jazz brunches and late-night bites that turn into memories. Markets like St. Roch and Frenchmen Art Market offer small bites with big flavor, and neighborhoods like Bywater and Treme are full of hidden culinary gems. New Orleans is a place where food is culture and eating well is a way of life.
OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI
Oxford shines as a foodie city thanks to its bold blend of tradition and innovation. The Mississippi town’s dining scene is anchored by culinary heavyweights like James Beard–winning chef John Currence — founder of City Grocery (a legendary shrimp and grits eatery) and Snackbar, where IndianSouthern fusion dazzles under chef Vishwesh Bhatt. But Oxford isn’t just fine dining. Cozy institutions Ajax Diner deliver soulful Southern staples — think chicken-fried steak and meat-and-three sides, with home-cook authenticity. Meanwhile, Bottletree Bakery and Oxford Creamery satisfy a sweet tooth with freshly baked breads, oversized cinnamon rolls, and artisanal ice creams. Saint Leo serves wood-fired Italian fare, while upbeat spots like Proud Larry’s combine gourmet pizzas with live music. And, of course, Oxford’s downtown Square offers open-air markets, local roasters and BYOB pasta joints, all within a charming college-town backdrop.
MIAMI, FLORIDA
The NFL home of Quinn Ewers is a premier foodie city, with more than a dozen Michelin-starred establishments and the most 4.5-star restaurants per capita. In January, the Michelin Guide also added Miami to its “most exciting foodie destinations,” spotlighting 64 starred restaurants, including gems in Little Havana and the Design District. But what makes Miami truly special is its cultural authenticity: Cuban cafés serve emblematic medianoche and cro, Venezuelan bakeries offer Latin-French pastries, and Jamaican-Caribbean eateries bring island flavors. Meanwhile, high-end spots like L’Atelier (two Michelin stars) and serene omakase bars like The Den at Azabu showcase international finesse. In just about every neighborhood - from Wynwood to Little Haiti and Brickell - food lovers can explore global tastes, from street-food authenticity to avant-garde cuisine. This seamless blend of value, variety and quality makes Miami a
