fl avor of the month
As the holidays descend upon us, there’s a welcomed chill in the air and a familiar flavor on our tongues: peppermint. It’s the classic taste of the season — sweet, cool and joyously uplifting. Much like our community, peppermint has a special place this time of year, weaving a sweet sense of nostalgia through everything from cozy coffeehouse lattes and festive desserts to the very trees that adorn our family rooms.
As we savor the season each year, it’s also the perfect time to celebrate the businesses — both new arrivals and perennial favorites — who define the flavor of our town. Our annual Best Of section showcases the dedication and spirit behind Southlake’s thriving local market. Quite often it's the smallest brands who have the biggest impact in our city, creating jobs, building our community and supporting the positivity we all share through this magazine each month.
As we close out another remarkable year, we ask that you also take a moment to recognize our many small businesses, local organizations and individuals who continue to make our hometown exceptional. Spread good cheer and positive reviews online, thank a loyal staffer with a gift card and make conscious efforts to shop local when you can. However you do it, now is the perfect time to show some gratitude for their support to our community. Is there any better way to enjoy the spirit of the season?

Tips From A Breast Surgical Oncologist
What Every Woman Should Know About Prevention And Screening
What steps can women take to maintain good breast health?
Any healthy lifestyle choices that benefit your overall health also benefit your breast health. For example, studies show that getting 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week can help lower your risk of breast cancer and other cancers. Eating a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and lean protein — and limiting alcohol and smoking — can also lower your risk and support overall well-being.
What breast changes are normal, and what should be a cause for concern?
It’s very normal for breasts to change slowly in size, shape and texture throughout a woman's life. These changes typically happen so gradually that most women don't notice them. However, any sudden changes that are noticeable over a few weeks or months, such as changes in size, texture or skin dimpling, should be evaluated by a doctor or breast specialist. This is especially important if the change occurs in only one breast.
What are the key risk factors and early symptoms of breast cancer?
Many women assume they’re at low risk if they don't have a family history of breast cancer. However, breast cancer risk is "multifactorial," meaning it’s influenced by many different factors. Your risk is determined by your personal gynecologic history, body mass, breast density and family history, among other things.
It’s surprising to many that most women with early breast cancer don’t experience noticeable symptoms or pain, which makes regular screenings critical. That said, certain symptoms do require medical attention. If you experience nipple discharge while not lactating or find any new masses, lumps or bumps, these should always be evaluated by a medical professional.
Why is an annual screening mammogram important for women over 40?
The fact that most women don't experience symptoms makes annual screening mammograms crucial for women over 40. For those at higher risk, screenings may need to start sooner. A mammogram remains the best way to detect breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable.

THE JOY OF FAMILIES BACK TOGETHER
At Christ’s Haven, Healing Often Means Letting Go And Celebrating Love
“It’s my job to be the middle man but love like the main character.”
— Christ’s Haven Houseparent
Sometimes, the most beautiful stories at Christ’s Haven are also the most bittersweet. Earlier this year, one of the organization’s houseparents experienced the deep mix of emotions that come when children she’s loved and cared for return to the safety and love of their biological families.
For five years, she provided the stability, comfort, and consistency those kids needed. When the time finally came for them to reunite with their family, there were tears and celebration in equal measure — a reminder of the heart behind Christ’s Haven’s mission.
“It’s my job to be the middle man but love like the main character,” the houseparent said. “They’re worth it, and my hurt will never compare to what those little hearts went through.”
Reunification is central to Christ’s Haven’s Guiding Principles, which emphasize restoring families whenever safely possible. Each child’s journey is unique, and the team thoughtfully assesses each situation to determine when reunification can happen. While not every case leads to that outcome, Christ’s Haven houseparents remain steadfast in providing “Normalcy, Dignity and Hope” for every child in their care.
For more than 70 years, Christ’s Haven has provided a family model of care for displaced children, teens, and young adults — a voluntary placement option outside traditional foster care. Located in the north Fort Worth/Keller area, the organization creates nurturing, trauma-informed homes where children can heal and grow.
This holiday season, Christ’s Haven invites the community to make a difference. Visit christshaven. org/christmas to learn how you can support displaced youth and local families in need.
There’s something magical about the hunt for the perfect Christmas tree — the crisp air, the scent of pine and the satisfying moment when you find “the one.”
But as the holidays fade, so does that beauty. Needles dry out, branches sag and before New Year’s, you’re dragging what was once the centerpiece of your celebrations to the curb.

Mint Condition
Long before pumpkin spice claimed its spot as fall’s reigning flavor, another aroma was already signaling the holidays ahead: peppermint. No longer relegated to your grandfather's pocket, Winter’s frostiest flavor is enjoying a full-on glow-up with brands, cafés and creators everywhere jumping on the bandwagon. Whether swirling in a mug, folded into chocolate or perfuming a room, peppermint remains the unmistakable essence of holiday cheer — and this year, it’s trendier than ever. Here are a few of our favorite ways to sip, snack and scent our way through the happiest time of the year.
Sip The Season
One seasonal sip you won’t want to miss this year is La La Land Kind Café’s Peppermint Latte. It’s a dreamy blend of bright peppermint and velvety espresso that feels like a holiday hug in a cup. The balance is spot-on: not too sweet, not too strong, but full of cheerful winter flavor. For longtime fans of the classics, Starbucks’ Peppermint Mocha continues to deliver its iconic, chocolate-mint warmth. When you want something a little more spirited than hot cocoa, the Peppermint Bark Martini at the Holly Jolly Bar inside Hotel Vin steals the show. Creamy, minty and delightfully decadent, it’s a sure fire way to warm you up inside and out.
Sweet Bites
Peppermint lovers, rejoice! This is truly your year to indulge. Milkshake Factory’s Peppermint Bark delivers cool crushed peppermint folded into creamy milk chocolate, creating a nostalgic, melt-in-your-mouth treat that doubles as the perfect stocking stuffer. Of course, the original classic still holds its crown: Williams Sonoma’s iconic Peppermint Bark, beloved for its rich chocolate layers and satisfying peppermint snap. For something more decadent, Nothing Bundt Cakes’ Peppermint Chocolate Chip Cake offers rich chocolate, studded with chips and bright peppermint in every bite. And for a show-stopping seasonal dessert, Emporium Pies’ Father Christmas Pie — a peppermint white chocolate custard topped with peppermint whipped cream in a chocolate cookie crust — is worth the trip to Bishop Arts or a Goldbelly delivery straight to Southlake.
Sip The Season
If you want your home to smell like pure holiday cheer, start with Voluspa’s Gourmand Crushed Candy Candle, sold at Anthropologie. It delivers a luxurious swirl of sugary mint that’s festive without feeling overpowering. The scent is crisp, clean and just sweet enough to warm up the room. Bath & Body Works’ Twisted Peppermint Candle brings a bold, playful hit of mint that instantly energizes any space, while Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Peppermint Soy Candle sold at Target offers a fresher, more natural take on the seasonal fragrance. Light any of these and your home instantly transforms into a winter wonderland.

In its first year, the group delivered more than 50 meal baskets and over $1,750 in donated items to local families and nonprofits. Five years later, the impact has multiplied: The Candy Cane Project has raised about $18,000 and provided food and gifts to around 550 children.
Today, an 11-member student board leads the effort, supported by dozens of volunteers who show up on packing and drop-off days to wrap boxes, assemble treats and load cars.
“It’s taken time to find the right people for each role,” says Sriya Badireddi, Project Candy Cane’s head of marketing. “But seeing the community rally around these families makes all the work worth it.”
This season, the Candy Cane Project’s annual toy drive runs through December 12, collecting new, unwrapped items like plush toys, LEGO sets, art kits, board games, sports balls, headphones and gift cards for infants through teens. One gift at a time, these Dragons are making sure more North Texas kids feel seen, celebrated and cared for this Christmas.
Drop-offs will be accepted at Southlake Style’s office (520 E. Southlake Blvd., Suite 100) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 2, 4, 5, 9, 11 and 12. For a full list of needed items, visit SouthlakeStyle.com.

Building A Book-Lover’s Haven In Grapevine
When Grapevine’s Talking Animals Books first opened its doors in 2023, co-owner Katy Lemieux never imagined the little indie shop would need to expand so soon. But as community book clubs multiplied and author events began selling out, she and partner Valerie Walizadeh realized they’d outgrown their cozy space. This fall, the pair unveiled a second location farther down Main Street, complete with exposed brick, a coffee-and-wine bar, and room to accommodate their ever-growing list of popular live book events. We sat down with Katy to talk about their new chapter that isn’t just about growth; it’s about strengthening the vibrant reader culture that’s taken hold across North Texas.
WE REALIZED LAST SPRING… that our events were ramping up faster than we could manage. The shelves were packed, we were constantly moving product just to make space, and our off-site events were getting bigger every month. When a friend at the city sent us a listing for this space, we almost dismissed it. It felt too far south on Main. But once we saw it, we knew: this was it. It already had a built-in bar, plenty of open space and the character we love. We basically decided on the spot because opportunities like this don’t wait.
OPENING A SECOND STORE WAS A RISK… but also a relief. We can finally spread out and dream a little bigger. The new location lets us host larger author events for up to 150 people and compete for national tours we couldn’t accommodate before. It’s also given us breathing room creatively. The exposed brick, the art, the bistro tables on the patio; it all feels like the kind of literary café we always envisioned.
OUR FUNDRAISER HELPED… make it possible. We originally launched a Kickstarter that raised nearly $30,000 before we shifted donations to our own site. The mural in the new store includes the names of donors who contributed $500 or more. It’s a beautiful reminder of how this community literally built the space with us.
WE LOVE BEING PART OF… Grapevine’s downtown energy. We’re right next to Hotel Vin and surrounded by festivals and concerts. During holidays, we stay open late because people are already out enjoying the plaza. It’s not a bar vibe — it’s where you can have a quiet glass
of wine, browse or talk books while the rest of Main Street winds down.
THE BOOK WORLD IS HAVING A MOMENT… Everyone talks about AI, but there’s been a massive resurgence in reading since 2019. People crave real connection and conversation. Bookstores became safe havens during the pandemic, and that sense of community never left. The idea that “no one reads anymore” just isn’t true. We see proof every day.
THERE’S A PHENOMENON CALLED… the “decline at nine.” That’s the age when reading starts to feel like homework instead of fun, and a lot of kids never come back to it. Now, as adults, they’re rediscovering that joy — often through stories filled with adventure, imagination and heart. Whether it’s fantasy, romance or something in between, those books remind people how powerful it feels to escape into a world where anything is possible.
OUR BOOK CLUBS KEEP GROWING… We host six: fiction, romance, fantasy/sci-fi, horror, a banned-books club and a high-school club. The banned-books group started when a woman new to town wanted to meet people by reading the titles she’d missed in school. It’s always packed now. It’s now one of our biggest proofs that curiosity builds community.
AT THE END OF THE DAY… this place is for curious people. We may not have something for everyone, but we have something for anyone who wants to learn, imagine and belong. That’s what keeps us turning the page.

Rooted In Hospitality
From Manhattan To Main Street, Kevin Lillis Is Building Connection
BY CYNTHIA NAUGHER
PHOTOS COURTESY HOSPITALITY ALLIANCE
On a golden Texas evening, Kevin Lillis stands at the edge of a soccer field at Southlake’s Bob Jones Park, a whistle hanging loosely around his neck. His 9 year-old daughter’s team is laughing its way through drills, the sound of cleats and chatter mixing with the faint hum of the occasional passing car.
“This,” he says, smiling as he watches the chaos turn to teamwork, “is the best part of my week.”
It’s a scene you might not expect from a man who once oversaw the glittering ”Great Gatsby” premiere at New York’s Plaza Hotel, hosted Prince at a ”Saturday Night Live” anniversary party, or helped launch one of Dallas’ most ambitious urban redevelopments. But for Lillis — restaurateur, developer and founder of Hospitality Alliance — life in Southlake has brought a new kind of satisfaction, centered around connection, roots and a chance to build something lasting close to home.
A LONG WAY FROM QUEENS
Lillis grew up in Bayside, Queens, where community wasn’t a concept; it was a given.
“If you came home and your parents weren’t there, the neighbor made you a sandwich,” he recalls. “Everyone looked out for each other.”
That early sense of belonging would shape everything he later built.
After college and a stint producing live events, including large-scale sports and entertainment experiences through his own production company, he found his way into hospitality, where creative vision met logistical precision. By his thirties, he had joined Hampshire Hotels as Executive Vice President of Real Estate and Food & Beverage, overseeing properties across New York City.
Soon after, he became Head of Real Estate, Food & Beverage — and the only U.S.-based executive for Sahara, the majority owner of both the Plaza Hotel and Dream Downtown. When the Plaza’s famed dining rooms fell into disrepair after a failed condo conversion, Lillis was asked to restore their shine.
“It was the Plaza,” he says, shaking his head. “You don’t turn that down.”
The job was equal parts glamour and chaos. The hotel’s majority owner was later the subject of a Netflix documentary, and much of the management team had vanished. Lillis was effectively on his own, responsible for bringing a legend back to life. He leaned into the property’s Jazz Age mystique, helping reimagine the Fitzgerald Suite, reviving the Eloise Suite with designer Betsey Johnson, and reintroducing glittering events that made the Plaza the talk of New York once again.
“It was like bringing history back from the dead,” he says. “And once it was stable, I knew it was time to build something of my own.”
That decision would eventually lead him south. After years of building and managing iconic spaces in Manhattan, Lillis saw an opportunity to grow his own company — and his family — somewhere with room to breathe. Texas, with its business-friendly climate and central location, offered a perfect base for projects on both coasts.
But it was the people who made it feel right.
“Southlake has this rare mix of drive and kindness,” he says. “Everyone’s working hard, but they’re also looking out for each other. It reminded me of where I grew up.”
BUILDING THE BUSINESS OF BELONGING
In 2015, Lillis founded Hospitality Alliance, a Dallasbased development and management company that designs, builds and operates restaurants, hotels and entertainment destinations. His vision was simple: to create spaces where great food, music and atmosphere came together naturally.
His first major opportunity came when AT&T invited him to partner on its Discovery District in downtown Dallas. The flagship restaurant, JAXON Texas Kitchen & Beer Garden, quickly became a hit, followed by The Exchange, a two-story culinary collective and

event space that earned Lillis the ICSC Development Project of the Year Award.
“Hospitality can’t be faked,” he says. “If you genuinely care about people — your guests, your employees, your partners — they feel it. That’s what makes a
Even amid the uncertainty of COVID-19, he and his team persisted, adapting JAXON’s expansive beer garden for outdoor concerts and community events. “We realized that what people missed most wasn’t food or travel,” he says. “They missed being together.”
That philosophy continues to guide projects across Texas, from Victory Social in Dallas’ Victory Park neighborhood to Shoals Smokehouse, Pistil Lounge, and a 25,000-square-foot event plaza at Toyota Music Factory in Las Colinas. Rather than chasing trends, Lillis and his team design each venue with a singular goal: creating environments where people want to
One of his favorite projects, 1519 Main, captures that ethos perfectly. The building itself dates back to the 1870s — one of the oldest surviving structures in downtown Dallas — and Lillis felt a responsibility to
“We didn’t want to put anything new in the space,” he says. “You can see the history in every brick, in the layers of paint, in the way the light hits the original
Rather than erase its past, his team embraced it: torching tabletops to bring out the grain, refurbishing cast-iron table bases from early-1900s factories, and filling the room with antique fixtures sourced from old Dallas warehouses. The walls remain raw and imperfect, their texture telling the story of the building’s 150-year journey from a 19th-century dry-goods store
“You can feel the soul in those old bricks,” Lillis says. “We just tried to listen to it.”
FINDING HOME IN SOUTHLAKE
Lillis and his wife, Janna, moved their family to Southlake several years ago, drawn by its schools, location and strong sense of community. “We had projects on both coasts,” he explains, “so being in the center of the country made sense. But once we got here, it quickly became home.”
He laughs remembering the early adjustment from New York to suburbia. “I grew up walking everywhere, hopping on the subway. Southlake’s the opposite. But it’s safe, it’s intentional, and it’s full of people who care about the same things we do.”
That shared focus on family, education and excellence resonated with him immediately. “There’s a kind of alignment here,” he says. “Everyone wants their kids to have opportunities, to be kind, to work hard. It feels like a town built on shared values.”
Those values now guide his daily rhythm. By day, he’s in meetings about design, construction and operations; by night and weekend, he’s on the field or at a local restaurant with his kids.
“It’s definitely double duty,” he says. “But I’ll never get another chance to coach my kids. Sleep can wait.”
DESIGNING FOR CONNECTION
Even as his company continues to expand — from projects in the Toyota Music Factory to hospitality part nerships nationwide — Lillis’ creative energy is increas ingly focused on community spaces.
He’s been deeply involved in early discussions about Carillon Park, the long-anticipated Southlake develop ment that has captured imaginations for more than a decade. His hope is to help shape it into something truly special.
“I’d love to see a space that feels alive — where fami lies can gather for concerts, charity events, or just to be together,” he says. “A green space that’s walkable, safe, and full of music and life.”
It’s an idea he’s already proved can work. At Toyota Music Factory, he re-energized the district by curating live-music programming and activating public areas that once sat dormant.
“You don’t need a massive footprint to create com munity,” he says. “You just need the right energy — food, sound, and a reason for people to stay.”
For Southlake, he envisions something on a more intimate scale. A park that feels like an extension of the neighborhood. “I want to build a place my kids and their friends can work someday,” he adds. “Somewhere they can learn, whether it’s in culinary, design, or event production. That’s the beauty of hospitality — it touch es everything.”
THE CHARACTER OF PLACE
Spend a few minutes with Lillis and it becomes clear that his passion isn’t just for restaurants; it’s for storytelling through space. Whether it’s a 150-year-old building in Dallas or a new family-friendly park in Southlake, he approaches design as narrative.
“but I think what people crave is authenticity — not just shiny and new, but places that mean something.”
“I love when a place has layers,” he says. “When you walk in and can feel what it’s been through — the people who built it, the moments that happened there. My job is to respect that and give it new life.”
That perspective also explains why he gravitates toward projects that merge old and new. It’s similar to the philosophy that Southlake Town Square’s developer, Brian Stebbins, had in mind decades ago when the city’s now-beloved central hub was just a concept. “Dallas and Southlake have so much growth,” he says,
Authenticity is a word he returns to often. Maybe it’s the Queens kid in him — the one who grew up around neighbors who told it straight and cared deeply. Or maybe it’s simply what decades in hospitality have taught him. “If you’re in this business for the right reasons,” he says, “you’re not chasing trends. You’re creating experiences that last.”
LEGACY AND BELONGING
As his kids grow — his daughter, Evelyn, is a 3rd Grader at Rockenbaugh, and his 11-year-old son, Grant, is a 5th grader at Eubanks — Lillis is thinking more about roots than reach. “In ten years, they’ll be out of the house,” he says. “Right now is the window to build something they can be part of.”
That means creating spaces close to home that embody the same sense of belonging he once felt in Queens. It also means showing his children what passion and hard work look like up close. “I want them to see that great things are possible when you care about what you’re doing,” he says.
When asked if he misses New York, he smiles. “I’ll always love it. New York is where I learned everything. But Southlake is where we’re growing something new. It’s where my kids are Dragons. It’s where we can build the kind of community I grew up with.”
He glances back at the field, where the last of the evening light glows across a tangle of orange jerseys. “Hospitality, at its heart, is about people feeling at home,” he says quietly. “That’s what I want — whether it’s in a restaurant, a park, or right here.”

ELSA KACKLEY
Caring, Savvy, Smart and Knowledgeable
Elsa is an extraordinary realtor! I have witnessed Elsa work her magic in a variety of scenarios and price points, each with its unique challenges. She is always professional and endlessly attentive. Real estate is her calling. During the sale of my most-recent house, we had a very difficult buyer’s realtor to contend with, but you would never know it. Elsa handles everything that comes her way with grace and ease. Her professionalism and focus on my goal to sell my home never wavered. Having COVID and being out of the country didn’t stop her from working my sale every single day of her “vacation.” She is unstoppable! She has sold three homes for me, all for over asking price. She is a super star, she is caring, she is savvy, she is smart and she knows real estate law. Do yourself a favor and hire her as your real estate agent. The Best In The Industry
Custody and divorce battles are never good, but I can assure you that the services provided by Kate Smith’s law firm are the best in the industry. I wanted Kate Smith with me at all times during my court hearings simply based on her experience and having a resume that is overqualified. She is a bulldog in the courtroom when she needs to be. I’m a very satisfied client, and I believe you will be too.
— John C.
Providing A Smoother Path
I have recently started services with the Law Offices of Kate Smith and was very refreshed with the plethora of ideas and concerns that Kate brought to the table. On an initial prepaid office visit, she exceeded the allotted time by almost an hour to make sure I understood what things I needed to do and what I would encounter with the plaintiff’s representation.
I enjoyed our meeting and we shared many interesting stories that related to the divorcee experience. Family matters are at the top of my priority list, and she had specific recommendations that will help our family heal. I’m just starting on the tumultuous journey, but I already feel that a smoother path has been provided for me.

Incredible Pizza
This place has one of the best pizzas I've eaten... I love the pizza and salad that we get so much that I end up getting it every time. All the other food looks and smells good, but I just can't bring myself to get anything else!! I love the decor. It's like an old-style Rat Pack era bar. There is outside patio seating that is heated in the winter as well. Add it to the Love List!

SWEET ESCAPE
Kate Weiser Chocolate lands in Grapevine
Texas Chops, Italian Soul
Raised on the Upper East Side and steeped in the aromas of New York’s Little Italy, chef John Tesar learned at an early age how to move comfortably between refinement and familiarity.
Knife Italian Steak
4150 N. MacArthur Blvd. Inside The Ritz-Carlton Dallas, Las Colinas
The James Beard–nominated, Michelinstarred chef, once featured alongside Anthony Bourdain on “A Cook’s Tour,” has long been known for his bold creativity, unapologetic confidence and unmatched skill with a steak knife. Now, he’s blending his razor-sharp skills with Texas-sized flavor at his newest concept: Knife
Where Italy Meets Texas
Step inside and the air is thick with the scent of seared ribeye, garlic and rosemary. Diners can start with ultrathin carpaccio dressed with shaved truffles, smoked tallow aioli and mustard cress — a dish that feels both delicate and indulgent.
From there, the menu moves seamlessly between Italy and Texas: lobster agnolotti folded by hand and bathed in saffron cream, a peppery cacio e pepe that hits just the right balance of bite and creaminess, and a 44 Farms ribeye seared in rosemary butter until it melts in your mouth.
The restaurant exclusively sources its premier angus beef from nearby Cameron, Texas— the home of 44 Farms. Since 1909, five generations of experience combine with science and family values to produce cuts dry-aged up to 240 days, known for remarkable depth and tenderness. Seafood lovers will find the menu is also full of lighter fare, including seared scallops and Mediterranean branzino, crisp salads and seasonal vegetables. House-made desserts like tiramisu and olive oil cake round out an impeccable experience where every plate captures the harmony of two worlds — rustic Italian comfort and polished Texas luxury.
Tesar describes his culinary philosophy as “progressive yet grounded,” a reflection of decades spent pushing boundaries while respecting tradition.
“When I created Knife Steakhouse a decade ago, my goal was to build a steakhouse for everyone,” he says. “But diners evolve — they want experiences that feel both fresh and familiar. That’s exactly what Knife Italian Steak delivers.”
Redefining Fine Dining
It’s a fitting evolution for a chef who’s spent his life redefining what American fine dining looks like. From his early years in New York kitchens to appearances on “Top Chef” and “No Reservations,” Tesar’s career has been equal parts grit, reinvention and precision. With this latest venture, he’s not reinventing himself so much as refining the essence of what’s made him a standout all along: bold flavor, impeccable technique and a willingness to make fine dining approachable.
Soft lighting bounces off olive-green booths and rosetoned accents, creating an atmosphere that’s intimate yet lively. Guests can unwind over dinner from 5 to 10 p.m., or stop in for breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., when the café serves Italian-inspired morning bites like espresso, pastries and savory breakfast paninis.
Private dining rooms, valet service and The Ritz-Carlton’s hallmark hospitality make it ideal for gatherings and celebrations alike. Sophisticated yet unpretentious, the restaurant delivers refinement with ease.
Just 20 minutes from Southlake, Knife Italian Steak bridges the distance between the East Coast and North Texas. It’s an homage to where Tesar came from and where he’s landed — a place where Texas chops meet Italian soul.
Much like its creator, the restaurant feels elevated but never fussy — the kind of place where a perfectly seared steak is right at home next to handmade pasta and a glass of Barolo.

Authentic Argentinean-Style Empanadas At Bariloche
Slip inside Smallcakes Keller and follow the savory scent wafting past the cupcake display. At the counter’s edge lies a glass case of golden, hand-crimped pastries.
It’s arguably one of the area's best-kept secrets: Bariloche Empanadas, a Patagonian treasure hiding in plain sight.
Empanadas have long been a staple across Latin America, each region shaping the handheld pastry into its own reflection of home. In Patagonia, they’re defined by their tender, rich dough and slow-simmered fillings. It’s a humble comfort food meant to be eaten warm, by hand and savored with your nearest and dearest.
Brothers Ivan and Pablo Segovia grew up in a family where food was both livelihood and language. Their roots stretch from Chile, where their family still runs a beloved Chinese restaurant, to the windswept lakes of Argentina’s Patagonia, whose flavors inspired Bariloche’s name and menu.
“We wanted to share what we grew up with,” Ivan says. “Simple ingredients, folded with care.”
Each empanada begins with dough rolled thin and folded over fillings that balance tradition and invention. The Beef Empanada tucks a tender onion-stud-
ded stew and a slice of hard-boiled egg inside a rich, flaky pastry crust. The Chicken Empanada carries their family recipe of bell peppers, onions and six secret spices; the Shrimp and Cheese melts mozzarella into wild-caught shrimp; and the Vegan Empanada is a mouth-watering mix of mushrooms, corn, olives and potatoes. Other favorites, like the Spicy Chorizo, Italian Style, and Corn and Cheese, prove that everyday comfort can still feel artisanal.
The Segovias sell their creations daily inside Smallcakes, through DoorDash, and every Saturday at the Bear Creek Park Farmers Market in Keller. They also pop up at events like the Trophy Club Market, where locals quickly learn to arrive early. The flaky, delectable turnovers disappear fast.
The concept is humble. A few trays, a small oven and flavors that make the short drive from Southlake an easy yes.
Hitting The Sweet Spot Kate Weiser Brings Edible Art To Grapevine
Grapevine just got a little sweeter. The scent of cocoa once again drifts through the air along Main Street, leading straight to Kate Weiser Chocolate’s newest boutique. Once home to Dr. Sue’s Chocolate, the space has been transformed with Weiser’s signature blend of whimsy and precision.
Known for her hand-painted bonbons that are equal parts beauty and flavor, Weiser has become one of Texas’ most celebrated chocolatiers, named among Dessert Professional Magazine’s Top 10 Chocolatiers in North America and featured on Oprah’s coveted Favorite Things list. For the Dallas-based chocolatier the location was a long-held dream.
“Grapevine Main Street has always been on my ‘stop everything you are doing and open a store if a space becomes available’ list,” Weiser says. “As soon as I heard this space was vacant, I had to jump at it.”
Inside, the shop promises an atmosphere that’s as nostalgic as it is modern. With an inviting balance of warmth and polish, the glass cases glisten with meticulously hand-painted bonbons and truffles that look almost too beautiful to eat.
“It’s been so fun figuring out how to blend my modern brand with the charm of Grapevine,” Weiser added. “This store has such a warm and nostalgic environment.”
One of its star attractions is the all-new Lil’ Carl Melting Experience, an interactive ode to Weiser’s cultfavorite creation, Carl the Snowman – a hollow chocolate snowman filled with cocoa mix and marshmallows. Guests can watch as Lil’ Carl melts into a steaming mug of hot chocolate, releasing ribbons of rich cocoa and sweet vanilla into the air.
“Carl belongs in Grapevine,” Weiser says. “He’s all about families celebrating the holidays together and sharing those core memories.”
This winter also marks the debut of Lil’ Carla, a pink, peppermint-flavored version of the beloved Carl. Alongside her, Weiser’s new collection of cookie-inspired holiday bonbons — think Snickerdoodle, Gingerbread Cookie and Sugar Cookie — will round out the menu in dazzling, edible colors.

HOLIDAY WANDERLUST
Berlin’s Christmas markets offer the ultimate winter escape
A Season of Light
Exploring Berlin’s Christmas Markets
Berlin in December feels cinematic. The air smells of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine, the streets shimmer with frost, and laughter from nearby carousels carries through the night. It’s a season made for wandering, where every corner seems to hum with the warmth of the holidays, even in the snow.
The German capital hosts more than 80 markets, but four truly epitomize the city’s vibrant spirit. One is steeped in history, one is a foodlovers paradise, one hums with creativity, and one made for long wine-filled evenings.
The Historical
Few places capture Berlin’s winter romance like the historic gardens of Charlottenburg Palace during the Christmas Market. Violet lights wash across the baroque façade, reflecting in the glass of
nearby stalls where artisans sell everything from handblown ornaments and wooden nutcrackers to candles molded into winter shapes. The scent of caramelized almonds mingles with roasting bratwurst, while choirs fill the courtyard with carols.
Beyond its beauty, Charlottenburg’s market offers a distinctly local touch. Many of the vendors are small German craftspeople. Think woodworkers from the Ore Mountains, candle-makers from Saxony and local chocolatiers from Berlin, creating an atmosphere that feels both regal and rooted in tradition. Families sip hot cider as children ride the old-fashioned carousel, and couples linger over plates of potato pancakes and fresh gingerbread. For visitors who crave more of this timeless magic, the Spandau Christmas Market, one of Berlin’s oldest, offers a similarly enchanting blend of history and old-world charm.
The Gourmand’s Haven
If there’s one market that turns the season into a feast for all senses, it’s the WeihnachtsZauber at Bebelplatz - Berlin’s most elegant Christmas market, currently set against the grand facades of Bebelplatz while Gendarmenmarkt undergoes renovation. Beneath strands of golden lights, the square hums with quiet opulence. It’s a culinary wonderland where Berlin’s celebrated chefs reimagine street food into something artful and indulgent. Heated champagne tents invite guests to linger over oysters and sparkling rosé, while the aroma of truffled spaetzle drifts from the gourmet stalls. That dish alone – even better with a flute of champagne in hand – is reason enough to brave
Beyond the food, artisans fill the surrounding tents with hand-carved ornaments, glasswork and intricate lace. The whole scene feels less like a market and more like a European salon: cultured, luminous and utterly unforgettable. For those who crave a similar blend of culinary artistry and atmosphere, the Rotes Rathaus market offers regional specialties beside its towering Ferris wheel.
The Creative
For two days in December (this year, Dec. 13-14), the former Colosseum cinema in the über-trendy Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood, transforms into a lively holiday expo called the Weihnachtsrodeo Design Market. The scents of cedar and coffee take over the space once home to a carriage house and now reborn into a striking blend of restored brick facades and modern glass. The Weihnachtsrodeo Design Market is Berlin’s answer to the handmade revolution: part art fair and part winter party. Designers sell sleek ceramics and bold prints beside tables of knitwear, jewelry and minimalist home décor. It’s lively, unpredictable and distinctly Berlin. If you crave more of the city’s creative pulse, stop by Holy Shit Shopping or the sustainable Zero Waste Xmas Market at Atelier Gardens.
The Unexpected
In a city of grand squares and glowing palaces, Berlin still knows how to do intimacy. Hidden in a quiet Schöneberg courtyard, the WEINachtsmarkt – a clever play on Weihnachtsmarkt (aka Christmas market) and Wein (aka wine) – offers a slower, richer kind of celebration. Candlelight flickers against brick walls as visitors sip mulled vintages spiced with clove and cherry. The market feels like a secret, with maybe a dozen vendors and small tables scattered between wine barrels. It’s the ideal spot to linger over Riesling and platters of cheese, charcuterie and dark chocolate. For a livelier twist, head toward the river to YAAM on Ice, where Jamaican street food crackles beside lively shows and skaters glide to reggae beats. Photos courtesy VisitBerlin.de
The Joy Is In The Journey
JSX Has Redefined Luxury Air Travel
If you’ve ever sighed at the sight of a long TSA line or found yourself languishing on the tarmac wondering why flying feels more stressful than special, JSX has rewritten the script. Short for Joyful, Simple Experience, JSX is the air carrier that makes travel feel like a privilege again — especially for flyers like us coming out of Dallas Love Field
Founded with the mission of returning delight to air travel, JSX offers semi-private flights that merge the swagger of tarmac selfies with the accessibility of commercial routes.
From the moment you arrive at one of their 20-plus well-appointed private terminals, the difference is clear — no endless hallways or shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. Instead, bypass the angst, and check in just 20 minutes before departure. After drop off at Dallas Love Field, you’re greeted by the check-in desk that whisks you and your two free pieces of checked luggage through TSA-approved security protocols with ease. A few more steps and you’ll find your way to the bright, modern cabin where every seat feels first-class.

Even connecting to the free inflight Starlink wi-fi is a breeze, so go ahead and video chat your children, stream a movie or work on that allimportant presentation.
It’s not just the seating that sets JSX apart; it’s the thoughtful extras, too. Beyond staying connected via wi-fi, you’ll enjoy complimentary drinks, cocktails and snacking at a level beyond brittle biscuits. And what can taste better than the feeling of two free checked bags? Golfers, skiers and adventurers alike appreciate that JSX counts oversized equipment — like golf bags and snowboards — as normal luggage, making it easier than ever to indulge your passions across the country.
Appreciating your passion for pets is just one more way JSX proves your needs are not an afterthought. JSX understands pet love and stands out as one of the few carriers that accommodates medium and even larger, well-behaved dogs in the cabin.
