The hustle of the holidays is upon us. There is much to be done, and, too often, we fall into the trap of watching the season fly by like it’s a Netflix series. The next episode will start in 5, 4, 3… Press pause. Remember to take a moment to uplift yourself, someone you love and a complete stranger too — that’s what Melissa Page would do. For 23 years, the director of the award-winning Emerald Belles has been bringing joy to the sidelines of Southlake Carroll games. Each year, she teaches squads of nearly 100 girls the mindset to keep their heads up high and their boots higher. For a few weeks this summer, that light shined on the national stage of “America’s Got Talent.” Millions watched in awe at the routines we know and love, and the Emerald Belles became America’s drill team. It was only fitting that their televised accomplishments led to a community parade in Southlake Town Square — the heart of our city developed by the late Brian Stebbins. As a publisher, father and fan, I’ve seen many products of Melissa’s mentorship first hand. Thanks to the discipline and positivity she instills, these young women, now numbering in the thousands, go on to do great things in our community and across the globe. For these reasons it brings me and the Southlake Style team great joy to recognize Melissa Page as our 2019 Brian R. Stebbins Award recipient for her enduring community impact. She is proof that one’s legacy transcends when they willingly share their gifts with others. This award comes at a special time as we reflect on the year that was and look ahead to the promise of another. Through Southlake Style, our gift is to praise and inspire the deserving souls who continue to uplift our community.

Yours in Southlake Style,

Mike Tesoriero | Publisher Mike@SouthlakeStyle.com

ask A. . JOEL JUST MANAGES AND SINGS WITH THE UPTOWN CAROLERS EVERY CHRISTMAS IN SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE

... CAROLER

Joel Just

WHEN DID YOU START UPTOWN CAROLERS? It all started in 2013. Several of us were already members of another caroling group in 2012, but we decided to branch out and start our own.

WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR EARLIEST CAROLING GIGS LIKE? We started off at the Premium Outlets in Grand Prairie. From there, we spread out all across the Metroplex. The first year, there were just four or five of us. Now we have 17 carolers. Wherever the gig is, we have people close to there who can handle it.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOUR QUARTET COMES TO SOUTHLAKE? We pretty much wander all around Southlake Town Square. We have a couple of stops where we spend some time, like outside Town Hall and around Santa’s Village, but generally, we’ll sing in front of a crowd for a while.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMMON CAROLS YOU’LL PERFORM WITH YOUR QUARTET? The ones that are most requested are ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.’ We may get tired of singing it, but we don’t act like it.

14 • DEC 19

HOW HAS THE CAROLING EXPERIENCE CHANGED FOR YOU IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS? We upgrade our costumes a little bit every year — make them look a little bit nicer, add a little more Victorian flair. We usually add one new song each year, depending on which songs we’ve gotten requests for that we didn’t know. The ones we add are usually more modern ones, like ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ by Mariah Carey. We like to say we’re a caroling jukebox.

WHAT MAKES YOUR GROUP DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CHRISTMAS CAROLERS? We try to involve the audience. Whenever we sing ‘Jingle Bells,’ we’ll invite a kid to come up and play the jingle bells with us. We also perform all of our songs from memory. Not a lot of groups do that. It’s more fun that way because we’re more engaged with each other and the crowd. We aren’t just looking down at a book and singing the notes.

ith a bright smile, energetic spirit and kind heart, Melissa Page has become a respected Southlake name over the past two decades. It’s not because of the hardware that populates the Emerald Belles locker room or the team’s time on this season’s “America’s Got Talent.” Melissa draws people in with empathy and a determination to help others. For the past 27 years, Melissa has acted as a drill team instructor for high school students. Now, in her 23rd year with the Emerald Belles, Melissa takes on a higher calling than high kicks. She is gradually shaping sympathetic leaders who will make the world a better place.

Setting The Stage Melissa spent her El Campo, Texas, youth developing a passion for dance. After pursuing that on the collegiate level and graduating from Texas State University, Melissa knew she wanted to teach. While other dancers might immediately look for professional roles, Melissa was always drawn to education. “Right when I got out of college, it was more about me just teaching,” Melissa says. “It’s not always about the perfection of dance. I just always felt like I had a different connection with the kids.” So she took on a drill team director position in Brenham and started working with young women on their technique. Four years later, the Carroll Emerald Belles job became available, and she jumped at the chance to take on the responsibility. After meeting with 1997-1998 Emerald Belles captain Erin McFarland, Melissa started to see the team’s potential for growth. Whether it was pushing the officers to try new routines or amp up their costumes, Erin says Melissa didn’t hesitate to make adjustments that bettered the squad. “We told her about the kinds of routines we like to do — we had never done a lyrical dance because it wasn’t our thing — but Melissa was like, ‘Oh, that’s my favorite thing, and we are going to do it,’” Erin says. “Thanks to her, we won all these awards at competition, and we won top honors for our lyrical routine.” But it was more than the physical changes. Melissa quickly taught the Emerald Belles to have pride and pleasure with every step of their process. “She showed us there can be true joy in everything you do,” Erin says.

Leading By Example Melissa demonstrates how to do that by showing others how much joy the team brings her. Those hours spent choreographing routines, overseeing practice and traveling to games and competitions can be seen as draining, but Melissa doesn’t think of that time as a chore. It’s an investment in her girls and proof of her passion. And her positive outlook, despite the time commitment, builds a strong respect that acts as a foundation for the Emerald Belles. “It would be different if I was just standing up there and barking out orders,” Melissa says. Beyond her role as a teacher, she emphasizes being an outlet for anything the girls may need. Whether it is meeting outside of practice to talk about stressors or just offering an open door to her office for those who need a listening ear, Melissa doesn’t think twice about giving more of her time and heart to students in need. “I am still just as disciplined, but I am kinder in the way that I do it. I just know that everybody is struggling,” Melissa says. Melissa has always been able to relate to the girls experiencing hardship, but after her son Reed passed away last summer, Melissa could see even clearer that everyone is working through something, which the girls were quick to notice. The 2017-2018 Emerald Belles captain Molly McKinnon knows she learned more than technique while on the team. “Mrs. Page doesn’t just teach us high kicks,” Molly says. “She has taught us so much about life. It’s how to be kind to one another. It’s how to recognize how to help someone.” 20 • DEC 19

“I think I now have more to give,” Melissa shares. “This past year, I had so many kids that I think would have never talked to me about the things they do now. Because they have seen me go through so much and keep going.” That perseverance, and continuing kindness through it all, has acted as an educational moment that Melissa’s teams, both past and present, have been able to see up close. “[The Emerald Belles] knew how difficult it was for me to come in, and I still did, and I was still positive,” Melissa says. “My mother is my angel, and she told me no one can steal your joy. The older I get, the more I realize that.” With that strong sense of self, Melissa is creating empathetic leaders who can go out and continue her legacy — not only in the dance world but also in their everyday lives. “I don’t get mad about a lot of stuff, but the one thing that I will not tolerate is if you don’t treat each other right,” Melissa says. “My older girls know that. They know how I do things, they know what I expect and they know how I treat them. That creates a ripple effect.”

Rippling Out To Others The Emerald Belles have built a legacy under Melissa Page’s leadership. With alums doing everything from teaching dance at adjacent schools and dancing professionally to leading TED talks and starting businesses, it’s safe to say Emerald Belles continue to thrive after graduating from Carroll. Karis Van, the 2007-2008 Emerald Belles captain, is now the Colleyville Heritage High School drill team director. By drawing on those impactful Carroll experiences, Karis hopes to recreate the direction Melissa provided. “She is just a positive role model for all her girls because she is so relatable,” Karis says. “She was able to help me grow as a leader, and I still use her as a mentor every single day.” Karis says that she often stops when an issue comes up with a dancer or a parent and asks, “WWMPD: What Would Melissa Page Do?” That foundational leadership reminds Karis just how impactful compassion can be for others. Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader All-Star and 20122014 Emerald Belles captain Lacey Munoz also credits Melissa for her success. “I owe so much of where I am today to Melissa Page and the [Emerald Belles] program,” Lacey says. “Those were some of the best and most educating years of my life, and I truly cherish that team.” While Melissa says she was proud to watch Lacey dancing on the NFL sidelines, she was especially proud to hear about how others perceived Lacey’s character. “I know [Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader director] Kelli Finglass because I have worked with the [Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders] on their high kicks, and they just rave about Lacey,” Melissa says. “They say she’s so disciplined, but they also compliment how she treats people, how people like her and how she is kind.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

And while the list of successful girls goes on — like how Molly is currently pursuing a career in dance in Las Vegas — Melissa is more proud of the kinds of people the Emerald Belles alums have become. This football season, Melissa started the #BeKindBeABelle award, handed out at every football game. On top of awarding one of her girls for dance ability, Melissa started giving the girls the chance to nominate one of their teammates they saw doing something for someone else in that past week. It could be as small as helping someone carry another person’s books down the hall or tutoring a fellow classmate. Melissa just wanted to continuously encourage the girls to live for others. “I love awarding what I want our culture to be,” Melissa says. “But it’s also reminding them daily to do something for someone else because we never know what people are going through.” While Melissa says it’s still hard to say goodbye to seniors year after year, she says it’s always fun to see what her former students can accomplish in their next stages of life. And she’s happy to see when that light she shares with them goes on to better others and stretch out the ripple effect. “Ever since I was a little freshman, I was like, ‘I want to be like her some day,’” Molly says. “Our legacy as a team is incredible, and we would not be the team we are if it weren’t for the effort she puts in. She doesn’t just shape dancers. She shapes leaders. She shapes girls who go on and do amazing things, not only as dancers but as people.” For all this and so much more, Southlake Style is proud to award our 2019 Brian R. Stebbins Award For Community Impact to Melissa Page. We could all work on being a little more like Melissa. But thanks to Melissa’s guiding light, she’s inspiring more girls to make Southlake a better place, one Emerald Belle at a time.

As the city’s shopping and dining hub, Southlake Town Square has identifiably made an impact on this small town. The district's founder and developer, the late Brian R. Stebbins, saw Southlake Town Square as a destination for locals to come together and live in community. That mission was palpable this summer with the Emerald Belles Community Celebration, pictured above. It is only fitting that Melissa Page is the latest recipient of the award named after Stebbins' community impact. Every year, we hope to honor Stebbins' influence that's still felt in Southlake by recognizing those who emulate his mission and strive to make this city a better place.

RONELL SMITH PORTRAYS BOB JONES DURING 2019 GHOSTS OF SOUTHLAKE PAST CEMETERY TOUR A big focus for City Council Place 4 member Ronell Smith is bringing attention to Bob Jones and the nature preserve that bears Jones’ name. In line with that goal, Smith portrayed Bob Jones in the 2019 Ghosts of Southlake Past Cemetery Tour on Nov. 2. Bob Jones, who was born a slave, grew up to be a landowner in the Roanoke-Southlake area, according to the Southlake Historical Society. Walnut Grove Elementary School is named after the school he built for his grandchildren who couldn’t attend white schools. The Bob Jones Nature Center, Bob Jones Park and Bob Jones Road are all named after him. Smith became involved in this year’s tour after reaching out to the Southlake Historical Society. Smith already has plans for how he'd like to continue to honor Bob Jones' legacy and has talked with the city about placing plaques at every school honoring its namesake. CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN TO PLAY CLARA IN NORTH TEXAS YOUTH BALLET’S PRODUCTION OF ‘THE NUTCRACKER’ Carroll High School freshman Sydney Fraser will take on the iconic role of Clara for the North Texas Youth Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker.” The Dana’s Studio of Dance student has performed more than a dozen different roles in “The Nutcracker,” but she was especially excited to learn she got this role after auditioning in September. The current Emerald Belle will trade in her hat and boots for pointe shoes on Dec. 15 when she takes the stage at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth. The performance will feature more than 70 dancers from the Southlake area who have been training with the North Texas Youth Ballet. For tickets and more information, visit NorthTexasYouthBallet.com.

SOUTHLAKE CITY COUNCIL AND PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION HOLD TOWN HALL MEETING ON 350 APARTMENT PROJECT The Southlake City Council and Planning and Zoning Commission held a joint town hall meeting last month regarding a proposed development that would build 350 apartments on approximately 13 acres in Southlake Town Square. According to the town hall agenda, the apartment units would be built on 7.3 acres south of the police and fire headquarters building, and various improvements would be built on 5.7 acres adjacent to McPherson Park. While no formal application has been submitted as of publication, the city stated in a media release that the applicant is expected to do so by the end of the year. Once the application is submitted, the developer will present their proposal at a Southlake Program for the Involvement of Neighborhoods meeting, then the case will be put before the Planning and Zoning Commission for a public hearing before it is brought to council.

SOUTHLAKE RANKED IN TOP 1% OF BEST SMALL CITIES IN AMERICA Southlake has come out on top once again. The city ranked in the top 1% of WalletHub’s recent 2019 Best Small Cities In America list. The personal finance website evaluated more than 1,200 cities with populations between 25,000 to 100,000 people. By looking at 42 key factors including housing costs and school systems, WalletHub decided Southlake should be placed in the 99th percentile. Cedar Park was the only other Texas city in the top 1% in the 2019 list, which is a better showing than last year’s ranking. In 2018, Southlake was the only Lone Star State city in the top 1% with Sugar Land acting as the second-highest scoring town, coming in the 97th percentile.

Eighteen teams represented 14 local police departments for its first public competition at the AirHogs Stadium. Anderson and Duco took home top honors in the “hard dog” and “top narcotics dog” categories and almost won the overall award but lost the tiebreaker. “I tell people all the time that I am blessed to be in the position that I am in, to have the partner that I have and to have the full support of my department,” Anderson says. “I love what I do and I push Duco and me to be the best team that we can be.” CLASS OF 2019 CARROLL ISD ATHLETICS HALL OF HONOR INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED The 2019 Carroll ISD Athletics Hall of Honor inductees were announced in November and includes 12 inductees across the football, baseball, basketball, swimming, soccer and track teams. YOU’RE AT HOME WITH HAWKINS-WELWOOD

The Metairie provides luxury and low-maintenance living

F

or more than 60 years, Hawkins-Welwood Homes has been building upscale homes throughout the Metroplex. HawkinsWelwood is now bringing its high-quality homes to Southlake in an exquisite new neighborhood development, The Metairie. The Metairie is a 29-acre development near White Chapel Boulevard and Dove Road that offers 56 well-crafted homes equipped with the latest smart technology. Homes, approximately 4,500 square feet, will be priced at around $1.4 million. With an enhanced focus on luxury and low-maintenance living, Hawkins-Welwood Homes President John Hawkins says the development caters to both families and empty nesters. “There’s a large part of the market who are empty nesters that want to lock and leave their homes and prefer little to no maintenance responsibility,” John explains. “With empty nesters moving closer to be near their children and grandchildren in Southlake, Hawkins-Welwood offers one of the only opportunities for new custom housing.” The community, complemented by a heavily-treed park and landscaped common areas, blends traditional European styles with modern details. It won’t be unusual to see traditional homes feature more current materials. The customizable floor plans give homeowners the chance to build out the interior of their dreams, and homes will be pre-wired for surround sound speakers and security. State-of-the-art building techniques and materials combined with tasteful home design provide the opportunity to build a home bringing pride and comfort for years to come.

“Great architecture creates long-term value for our homeowners,” John says. “ We use grade-a building material to make a home that is structurally sound. We want our homeowners to enjoy the livability and design of their home and to have confidence that they’ve built a lowmaintenance home of a lifetime.” The Metairie celebrated its groundbreaking on Nov. 20, and construction on the first community’s home will begin in late 2020. The Metairie’s team recommends prospective residents make their deposits today to take advantage of the community’s initial lot pricing and get their choice of lot. For more information, call 972.757.1870 or email at Kelly@hwhomes.com. “There is such a demand for new, exciting luxury neighborhoods in Southlake,” John says. “We’re very excited to build homes here. Our hallmark is great architecture, but even better customer service.”

HIRE SANTA’S HEAD ELF TALKS BUSINESS

S

anta Claus is a busy guy. That’s why he needs a strong support system to assist with all his responsibilities — like public appearances. Thankfully, head elf Mitch Allen is here to help. Mitch is a Southlake entrepreneur who had a moment in the spotlight last year when he pitched his business, Hire Santa, on ABC’s “Shark Tank.” The digital marketing company, which secured a deal with shark Barbara Corcoran, connects clients to Santa actors and brings the joy and wonder of meeting St. Nick in person to children around the world.

I’VE ALWAYS… been hustling. Even way back in high school and college, I would buy and sell comic books and baseball cards with one of my best friends. In grad school, we would manage rental properties together. And when we graduated, I joined his law firm and took over the advertising. Most of the things that I’m associated with are related to internet marketing in some way or another, whether it’s web design or search engine optimization. I’ve been doing internet advertising for over 15 years now. COMING UP WITH HIRE SANTA… was completely accidental. One Christmas company party, my assistant asked me to dress as Santa while the COO dressed as Rudolph, and we would hand out Christmas bonuses and gifts. That same year, a friend of mine asked me to come by and be Santa for their little 1-year-old. In retrospect, I was a terrible-looking Santa, but it was a lot of fun. We did it again the next year, and some people actually offered to pay me to appear as Santa. I BOUGHT THE DOMAIN HIRESANTA.COM… in 2012. I was already getting more business than I could do, and I started sourcing jobs out to other Santas. That was when I started Hire Santa and really started doing search engine optimization around the keywords ‘Hire Santa.’ Business took off from there, and it started expanding from local Santas to regional to across the country. We’ve now sent Santas all over the U.S., Canada, Mexico, China and the Caribbean. THERE ARE A LOT OF SANTAS… but there are not enough Santas. From a business perspective, our limiting factor is high-quality Santa entertainers. Most of our bookings are done in January and February. Then it slows down for a couple of months, then in the summer, we’ll get lots of rebooking. Once we hit December, it just spikes through the roof. We always need more Santas. IN 2018… I saw there was an open casting call for ‘Shark Tank’ in Dallas at a small business expo. I went, stood in line with about 500 people and

DEC 19 • 34

waited all day to get an audition in front of six junior casting agents. My number came up, I presented, and when I was done, the agent said, ‘Don’t call us. We’ll call you maybe in a month or two.’ I got a call back in a week. From there, we started having these weekly calls with two producers working on my pitch. ‘SHARK TANK’ IS SORT OF… like the Super Bowl. What was interesting about the show is that when you watch it, it is entirely about the entertainment. But once you as the entrepreneur enter into the tank, it’s all business. There is no second take, it’s exactly what you see for 30 minutes to an hour and a half. Yes, the sharks are playing a role, but they’re all about business. I spent hundreds of hours preparing. I’ve done four or five mock ‘Shark Tank’ presentations to other business owners, watched every episode and wrote down all of the questions that they might ask. We filmed for about 45 minutes, which was edited down to eight minutes. MY NO. 1 GOAL... was to get a deal. About 15 minutes in, everyone was out except for Mr. Wonderful himself, Kevin O’Leary. I negotiated with Kevin for about 15 to 20 minutes, then Daymond John came back in, and I negotiated with him for another five to 10 minutes. Then finally Barbara jumped in and accepted the offer I made to Kevin and Daymond. It was a special, once-in-a-lifetime experience. SINCE ‘SHARK TANK’… Hire Santa rankings have really improved, and our web traffic is 300% more than it was last year. We’ve also increased the number of Santas in our database. We recently filmed a ‘Shark Tank’ update, which will probably air later in December. IT’S REALLY AMAZING... to see the love, hope and joy that children have around Christmastime and show that to Santa. I still appear at several events as Santa every year. Managing all of that is actually the hardest part because when I’m at an event, I can’t fix problems, so other people have to deal with those while I’m gone. Seeing the love and joy of Christmas from the children is the reason why I keep doing it.

SALLY LYNN HOME Wanted to Be Wowed I would highly recommend Ragan and Oscar of Sally Lynn Home! We hired them to decorate our entry, kitchen, living area, dining and master bedroom. Boy did they knock it out of the park! We were blown away at how awesome it looked. They also surprised us by decorating our office and keeping within the budget. We loved all the special personal touches too. The furniture and accessories are unique, things you don’t see anywhere else. My husband told them at our consultation that he wanted to be wowed, and they did just that. We love our home! – Mike and Denice P.

You Will Not Be Disappointed Ragan and Oscar had a tall task finding common ground between my rustic style and my wife’s preference for a modern flair. From the very first meeting, they both embraced this challenge head-on and ultimately far exceeded our expectations. The result was a complete transformation of our new house into all of the comforts of home, all the while appealing to both of our styles. We can’t sing enough praise about our experiences and the professionalism shown by the Sally Lynn Team, especially Ragan and Oscar. We highly recommend Sally Lynn for your next project, regardless of the complexity involved. You will not be disappointed! – Trey and Kristi S.

Fun and Easy I followed Sally Lynn Home on social media for quite some time and loved their work. So when we moved into a new house, we hired Sally Lynn to furnish and decorate the entire house. It was a big job, but Ragan and Oscar along with their staff were amazing. We were given several decorating options for each room to choose from, all beautiful. Ragan and Oscar made the process fun and easy. They along with their staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. They know how to make a house a home. We left for a weekend to come back to a beautiful home that we are so very proud of and was exactly what we wanted. – Terry and Belinda H.

Nailed It I reached out to Ragan and Oscar at Sally Lynn because I shop their store in Southlake all the time and absolutely love their eye for design. But I had no idea that I was in for the best experience of my life. Ragan and Oscar absolutely nailed it! My house now reflects who we are as a family and is stunningly beautiful at the same time. If you want an easy experience with fabulous results, call Sally Lynn! – Judy C.

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER

Pleased With the Progress We are so pleased with the progress our firstgrade daughter made during her time there. She was way behind her reading level, and we were completely unable to help her at home. Every day she told us her tummy hurt because of the anxiety she had from struggling to keep up at school. Only a few months later, she is now keeping up with where she needs to be and on track to start second grade all caught up. We will not hesitate to bring her or any of our other children here in the future. – Nichole E.

Keep Huntington in Mind Thanks to your center, my son has greatly improved his mathematics scores, and he feels he can finish off the school year on his own. We will definitely keep Huntington in mind in the future. – Andrea L.

A Second Family We feel very lucky to be part of the Little Sunshine’s Playhouse community. The teachers, who are seriously the backbone and soul of the school, are nothing short of fantastic! The administrative staff is always available to ask questions or even seek guidance from. It’s a warm, loving, caring and wonderful environment for your little ones. – Shannon M.

THE CHRISTMAS CAPITAL OF TEXAS, 20 YEARS IN THE MAKING HOW GRAPEVINE GOT ITS BELOVED HOLIDAY TITLE BY AS H L E Y M A D O N N A P H O T O S : S U P P L I E D BY T H E C I T Y O F G R A P E V I N E

trings of colorful lights, sculpted ice displays, familiar Christmas music playing through countless speakers — it all transforms Grapevine into the Christmas Capital of Texas each December. The tagline may sound like a catchy way to draw in tourists interested in holiday festivities, but the city has the paperwork to prove it. With Senate Proclamation No. 556, the Texas Senate recognized Grapevine for providing “one of the most enjoyable experiences of Christmas in Texas.” The declaration, which was issued in 2009, acknowledged the city’s decade of dedication to its Christmas activities — approximately 1,400 distinct events within 40 days every holiday season. Now, 10 years later, Grapevine still prides itself on not only its array of festive events but also the community spirit it displays year after year. Despite its glitzy finesse, the organized seasonal series came from humble beginnings. And with time and commitment, Grapevine’s Christmas run has become one of the biggest in the state.

Starting Out In 1998, the Grapevine Festival and Events department took a big step by hiring its second employee, a longtime volunteer and current Director of Festivals and Events Gayle Hall.

1994 Proclaiming It To The State

With knowledge of the area thanks to her upbringing and a desire to give back to her hometown, Gayle sought out opportunities to get people excited about downtown Grapevine — even when it meant being a part of the entertainment. “Our staff would put on these costumes and stand out on the curb and wave at people who went by,” Gayle reflects. “We would walk up and down the streets for photo opportunities; we would walk into the stores and entertain the merchants with their customers.” By building on what worked — like Grapevine Vintage Railroad’s North Pole Express — the city slowly grew a reputation for holiday fun. Thanks to the distinct vibe of Main Street, both locals and tourists started venturing out of their way to spend more time celebrating Christmas there. Gayle says that’s due to downtown Grapevine’s authentic energy. “That’s something that we have that so many cities don’t,” Gayle says. “They build their authentic buildings. We have authentic buildings.” With large entertainment locations like Gaylord Texan Resort and Great Wolf Lodge, and smaller companies and local organizations upping the Christmas ante, it was easy for the city to keep reinvesting in the project. Every year, the city added just a little more holiday decor or another activity to incentivize families to come out again next year. Soon it wasn’t just locals within driving distance stopping by Grapevine to sightsee. People from across the state came to experience pop-ups like ICE! at Gaylord Texan and Snowland as well as entertaining carolers, carriage rides and elaborate city-spread decorations. 66 • DEC 19

After curating more than 1,000 annual events, Grapevine staff got into the habit of calling the city the Christmas Capital of Texas. While it was at first just thrown around, Gayle and her team looked into ways to validate all the department’s hard work. “After years of saying this, we were fortunate enough to meet with and communicate with State Senator Jane Nelson about what would it take for us to get proclaimed as the Christmas Capital of Texas. Because after all, we do all these things,” Gayle says. State Senator Nelson, from Flower Mound, knew of Grapevine’s Christmastime efforts, so she worked with city officials to bring the position to the Texas Senate floor. “Christmas is an especially magical time for families to explore all that Grapevine has to offer," State Senator Nelson says. With persistence and patience, Grapevine city officials were able to see their efforts come to fruition in 2009 — 10 years after first expanding the city’s holiday series. But even a decade after receiving the proclamation, Grapevine hasn’t slowed down. “The Christmas activities that we promote, support and do ourselves has continued to grow,” Gayle says. That devotion to improvement has not gone unnoticed. "In the 10 years that have gone by since I filed the senate proclamation recognizing Grapevine as the Christmas Capital of Texas, I have seen thousands of Texans come to Grapevine to experience the joys of the season — beginning with the parade and lighting of the tree on Main Street, including Gaylord’s ICE!, the train ride with Santa and so many other family-friendly activities,” State Senator Nelson says. “It is an honor to represent Grapevine and its historic buildings and charming shops — which go all out for the holidays.” Senate Proclamation No. 556 gave the Grapevine Festival and Events department more than a marketing tool. It provided authentication for the years of work it took to build the city’s offerings. “While this is just a piece of paper,” Gayle says while holding up a copy of the state proclamation, “it has some real meaning to it. It validates something that we continue to grow year after year and try to make it better every single year.”

What Continues To Work Grapevine isn’t the only local city to host holiday amenities like carriage rides, a tree lighting or even a parade of lights, but Director of Marketing and Brand Management Kimberly Foster says keeping the Christmas Capital of Texas spirit alive is less about the physical offerings and has everything to do with the energy of Grapevine and the people who come out every holiday season. “It’s not going to be crazy laser lights everywhere and those things you may see in bigger cities trying to do more technology-related things,” Kimberly says. “We are just traditional with a warm feeling and welcome vibe.”

SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

Gayle says she loves to see the multi-generational families taking advantage of Grapevine’s Christmas activities. And while some groups might be larger than others — like a group of 40 pajama-matching people Gayle saw hop off the North Pole Express one year — Kimberly says everyone who comes out embodies the energy the city emulates. “Everyone is just so embracing,” Kimberly says. “You experience that great spirit of community.” But, at the end of the day, Gayle credits her colleagues, not only in her department but also throughout city government, who help make each Christmas season shine. It doesn’t matter if they are a part of the public safety or parks department, those who buy in and believe in the Christmas Capital of Texas spirit make sure it happens year after year. “Truly this community is different from many because everybody pitches in to help each other and make it work. That also makes it extra special,” Gayle says. “Because when you feel like someone is helping you, then I would hope you intend to give more or do more to try to help each other.”

Local Name Takes The Reins In The Big City Jason Harper Developing Heat At Fort Worth’s Toro Toro

fter beloved Colleyville executive chef Jason Harper announced he was closing his restaurant TRIO New American after 10 years, he hinted exciting news would follow. His next announcement delivered on that promise. Jason is now leading the charge at the first Toro Toro Pan-Latin Steakhouse in Texas as the location’s chef de cuisine. While Toro Toro has 35 locations from Denver to Dubai, this Lone Star State venture offered a distinct opportunity for Jason. By working with a culinary giant like Richard Sandoval, Jason was given the chance to customize the Pan-Latin concept to match the feel of not only Fort Worth but also Texas.

“Richard loves to give each one of his chefs freedom to put their own spin on that city’s mindset,” Jason says. “That was probably the most enticing thing.” After opening in The Worthington Hotel in Sundance Square last month, it’s safe to say Toro Toro has added heat to the Metroplex’s dining community — partially because of its unique offerings and stunning techniques. Jason says Toro Toro gets its distinction with its fire. As soon as guests walk in the restaurant, they will not only see Toro Toro’s dishes but also immediately smell what’s cooking thanks to the centrally positioned grill. With the hotel’s precisely placed ventilation, Jason and the Toro Toro team can create an intimate grilling expe-

rience, which helps guests engage with the food before it’s served. After being enticed by the intoxicating aromas, guests should make their way to the wrap-around bar to enjoy one of the hand-muddled Latin cocktails. After taking in the space and the ambiance, a quick glance at the menu proves there isn’t one way to build out your meal — but that’s part of the fun. As a top-notch Texas steakhouse, there are plenty of impressive cuts like 44 Farms filet mignon and 52 oz. Tomahawk ribeye on the woodburning grill. But small plates featuring Central and South American specialties promise an array of bold flavors and textures. “Toro Toro Fort Worth will be a destination fueled with Latin fire and passion that also embraces the city’s cowboy legacy, historic architecture, dynamic arts and entertainment scene, and toasts its champions of industry,” Richard says via press release. “I love Fort Worth’s pioneer spirit.” Those familiar with Toro Toro will see menu staples like smoked swordfish and chicharróns gracing the appetizer options. But new starters like the Niman Ranch pork belly skewers elevated with a bourbon-tangerine barbecue sauce and creamed corn bring Texas’ southern flavors to the forefront. Jason believes that is part of Toro Toro’s charm — that guests can experiment as they embrace the sharing experience that comes with dining out. “When you are excited about food, that’s what you want,” Jason explains. “You want to try about as many things as you can before you get full.” The Chipotle Char Siu Pork Ribs and Tamarind Glazed Smoked Brisket are ideal introductions to the essence of Latin-style Texas barbecue. But even those who keep a safe space between themselves and red meat can find plenty to get excited about, like the Chilean sea bass served with Japanese rice, toasted pecan, dashi, white miso, Peruvian yellow pepper and shiitake mushroom. While those ingredients may not sound compatible at first, those who are familiar with Jason’s creations know his passion to mix flavors to create transformative dishes. That, on top of Jason’s desire to join the Fort Worth food community, made Toro Toro a move that Jason couldn’t pass up. “It feels like a coming full circle and completion for me,” Jason says. Whether you come out for the sizzling steaks or the array of small plates, each Toro Toro trip promises to not only captivate your taste buds but also your experimental spirit.

Modern Mediterranean PIAF Brings Locals Together In Style After two decades of successfully running Main Street Bistro & Bakery in downtown Grapevine, owners Fabien Goury and Yasmine Bohsali decided to reinvest in the dining district. And thanks to Yasmine’s Middle East upbringing, it didn’t take them long to build a new concept and fresh menu. PIAF, a modern take on the Mediterranean bistro, offers seasonal menus that showcase the region’s zest. With influences from France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, North Africa and Turkey, the restaurant provides big flavors in a swanky environment. Whether you settle into the moody main dining hall downstairs, enjoy your meal on the enclosed upstairs balcony patio or try out the posh second-floor lounge featuring a hand-drawn mural highlighting spots in the Metroplex, you can quickly feel transported after taking a seat. “We wanted to create a good vibe and really a home away from home,” Fabien says. “We have two different vibes between upstairs and downstairs.” By working with local vendors and farmers, PIAF creates fresh takes on classic Mediterranean dishes. The beef carpaccio topped with shaved Parmesan, field greens and capers offers a subtle start to the meal, while the wagyu meatballs, served with a Moroccan tomato sauce, provide those juicy, hearty flavors you expect from the plate. Meat lovers can enjoy the lamb shank or filet mignon, while vegetarians can savor filling entrees like the mushroom risotto or the Mediterranean flatbread topped with artichokes, feta cheese, tomatoes and caramelized onions. And vino aficionados have plenty to be excited about with an expansive wine list featuring bottles that range in price from $27 to a couple hundred. “I want people to travel the world with wine,” Fabien says. “We have a diverse menu that includes French, Italian and Spanish wines.” With bright flavors and exquisite decor, PIAF provides something new to Grapevine’s hottest restaurant row. Whether you wander in for your next date night or drinks with the girls, it’s easy to ease back in your chair and make the most of the experience while dining at PIAF.

Those looking for a heartier entree should order the braised pork cheek, served with tomatillo and tequila jus, watermelon radish, crème fraiche, cilantro and charred scallion. While each of these dishes provides new flavors and textures, one thing stays consistent: precise presentation. RyeMcKinney.com

t’s Christmastime in Southlake. Carolers are singing, Southlake Town Square is sporting beautiful lights and wreaths and locals are unpacking their trees and decorating them with ornaments. But there are plenty of nights ahead before St. Nick clocks on Officer Brad Uptmore’s radar. If you’re looking for a fun way to pass the time with your family, friends or neighbors, here are nine Christmas movie classics to enjoy before the big day.

SCROOGE (1951) Alastair Sim shines in this 1951 British adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless story. While countless actors have taken on the Ebeneezer Scrooge mantle throughout the years, Sim possesses a sour bitterness that feels especially sinister every time he spits out “bah humbug.” This makes his eventual redemption all the more fulfilling when he’s cheering and jumping with joy, intoxicated with Christmas spirit. Noah Langley’s captivating screenplay also expands on Dickens’ material, adding backstory and context to how Scrooge became the grumpy old man that he is. Whether you’re a fan of the Muppets or animated Christmas Carols, “Scrooge” is an essential Christmas classic that you owe yourself to experience.

A CHRISTMAS STORY (1983) We all know somebody a little bit like the spectacled Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) — maybe you were even as mischievous and misbehaving as he was during your own childhood. In 1983’s “A Christmas Story,” Billingsley is innocent and endearing in Ralphie’s pursuit of a Red Ryder BB gun, which every adult warns will shoot his eye out. He’s reminiscent of Dennis the Menace’s silly Sunday comic antics. But what makes this movie so memorable is its hilarious vignettes, one of which includes one of Ralphie’s friends sticking his tongue on a flagpole. Quirky, lighthearted and endlessly charming, “A Christmas Story” is fun for the whole family.

THE SANTA CLAUSE (1994) We’ve all felt like Santa Claus at one point or another. Whether we have graying hair, declining eyesight or Christmas milk-and-cookies weight we can never seem to shed (sorry, New Year’s resolutions), we all embody some element of Santa’s physique. Perhaps that’s what makes Tim Allen’s transformation into the jolly old soul so enjoyable, because we know we’ll look the same by the time we’re 60. Tim Allen is hilarious as this toy manturned-Kris Kringle, but his adorable chemistry with Eric Lloyd as his on-screen son Calvin is what makes the movie wholesome. Sweet, sentimental and wildly entertaining, “The Santa Clause” is one Christmas fan84 • DEC 19

tasy that’s sure to satisfy you and your dad — especially if he’s Santa.

WHITE CHRISTMAS (1954) Irving Berlin’s iconic Christmas tune may have debuted in 1942’s “Holiday Inn,” but “White Christmas” shines thanks to its leading stars Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, who play two Broadway entertainers after the hearts of two singing sisters. Kaye’s hotshot charisma blends nicely with Crosby’s laid back, polished attitude, and their duets are heavenly. While “White Christmas” is the most recognizable holiday tune, the film’s other singles including, “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep,” have a vintage aesthetic that feels like they're coming straight from a record player. Every Christmas is a White Christmas every time you pop this classic into your DVD.

NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION (1989) If you’re looking for a sillier Christmas ride that is equal parts wild, zany and a tad bit raunchy, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” has it all. Chevy Chase stars as Clark Griswold in this wacky Christmas comedy where the Griswold family comes together for the holidays, only for it to go horribly wrong. Burnt turkey dinners, lightning-fast steel saucers, exploding Christmas lights and Christmas kidnappings are only a few funny obstacles in this preposterous and over-the-top holiday special. It might not be the most grounded Christmas classic out there, but it is definitely one of the funniest.

ELF (2003) It may have only released 16 years ago, but “Elf” has cemented its legacy as a Christmas classic regardless of its young age — and rightfully so. Will Ferrell is whimsical and outgoing as Buddy, a human who grew up in the North Pole believing he was one of Santa’s elves. He’s so convincing in portraying Buddy’s childlike joy and enthusiasm that he feels like an actual elf stuck in a man’s body. The sets and the costumes in the North Pole feel especially authentic, just like SanSOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

ta’s Village in Southlake Town Square. It’s easy to fall in love with Buddy all over again every time you watch this movie.

HOME ALONE (1990) Whatever you do, don’t leave Kevin McCallister home alone for the holidays. Otherwise, he’ll outsmart two clumsy burglars trying to break into his home through a flurry of traps and gizmos more confusing than the construction on Southlake Boulevard. Macaulay Culkin does a great job portraying this rascally and rambunctious little 8-yearold that spawned from Supernanny’s nightmares. John Hughes’ trademark slapstick humor is prevalent throughout the film, and he pulls at our funny bone more effectively than Kevin orchestrates his schemes. Whether it’s your first viewing or your 50th, “Home Alone” is the Christmas classic that will keep you laughing over and over again.

MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (1947) It’s every child’s dream to meet the real-life Santa Claus. Yet in George Seaton’s 1947 film “Miracle on 34th Street,” that’s exactly what happens to Susan Walker (Natalie Wood) when she meets Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) on 34th Street in New York. Edmund Gwenn steals the show in his Academy Award-winning portrayal of Kris Kringle, as he feels more jolly and carefree than even the big man himself does in Santa’s Village (sorry St. Nick!). But what really sells the movie is his chemistry with the bright-eyed and cheerful Natalie Wood, who actually believed Gwenn was Santa Claus while filming. As Kris Kringle says to Susan’s mom in “Miracle On 34th Street,” Christmas isn’t just a day — it’s a frame of mind.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) “It’s A Wonderful Life” is one of the best Christmas movies ever released, partially because it’s more about life itself than it is about Christmas. James Stewart shines in arguably his greatest performance of all time in this film, and that’s saying something for the guy who starred in “Vertigo,” “Rear Window” and “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.” Writer-director Frank Capra also takes us on a transformative journey that could potentially change your outlook on life, much like it does to George Bailey himself. Surprisingly, this movie underperformed during its initial theatrical run in 1946, only receiving its much-deserved love and affection when it went into the public domain in the 1980s. “It’s A Wonderful Life” isn’t just a great Christmas movie — it’s one of the greatest movies of all time, period. No wonder Clarence was so happy to get his wings. So what are you waiting for? Grab the hot chocolate and snuggle up on the couch — there’s plenty of movies to get through before Santa stops by.

Holiday House

T

he cookies are out, the milk is all set and the Christmas tree and stockings are just waiting to be adorned with presents by jolly old St. Nicholas. While there’s no doubt that he will stop by — that is, if you’ve been good this year — he may come just a little quicker if you mark your house with holiday decor. If you are looking for opportunities to make your home stand out this season, here are some top tips for making your residence pop.

LIGHT IT UP First things first: If you want to brighten up not only your home but also your street, you need Christmas lights. Thankfully, they come in several colors ranging from classic reds and greens to translucent whites and blues. Despite the hue, placement is key. Several holiday hounds go all out and decorate every inch of their homes with lights. But if climbing up on the rooftop sounds more frightful than merry, there’s no reason to worry. There are several groundlevel opportunities for lights that include trees, shrubs and doorways.

WREATH IT AND WEEP You can’t have a complete Christmas home without a traditional wreath. Thankfully, hanging them on your front door is a simple task. There are plenty of shapes, styles and sizes to choose from, which gives you a chance to show off your creativity. For a more traditional feel, go for an evergreen wreath adorned with pine cones and a red bow. Or for a glitzy look, decorate your wreath with bright ornaments and LED lights. Whichever you choose, it’s sure to make a statement all on its own.

GARLAND GREATNESS If your interior aesthetic embraces greenery and natural beauty, bring that outside this holiday season with cascading garlands. These pretty leaf chains provide more flexibility than wreaths because they can be placed just about anywhere. Most people line their window sills or door frames with them, but feel free to wrap your house’s columns or fences to amp up the look. There isn’t a wrong way to prepare for the holidays, but with just a little bit of time and attention, your home has the potential to shine. Happy decorating!

War. Heartbreak. True Love. Fall In Love With ‘Miss Saigon’

W

hoever said “all is fair in love and war” obviously never experienced either. Both can be tragic, painful, heartbreaking — sometimes all three at once. Nothing captures these feelings more beautifully than the award-winning musical “Miss Saigon.” This iconic show (which contains mature content) is about a bargirl named Kim who was orphaned because of the Vietnamese War. It’s practically love at first sight for her and the handsome American G.I. named Chris — until the fall of Saigon tears them apart. Kim tries to find him not only to reconnect but also to tell him that he has a son. When they finally reunite, Chris is married, and the future isn’t as clear as they once thought. Written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, the creators of “Les Misérables,” “Miss Saigon”

is an adaption of Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Madame Butterfly,” in which an American naval officer falls in love with a Japanese geisha. The inspiration for “Miss Saigon” came from a photograph published in 1975 of a Vietnamese woman dropping off her daughter at an Air Force base, so the little girl could have a better life with her American father. Since it opened more than 30 years ago, “Miss Saigon” has won more than 30 major theatre awards (including three Tony Awards), has been performed in 25 countries, has been translated into 12 languages and has had a revival featuring a new song, “Maybe.” With a cast of 42 amazing men and women performing hits like “The Heat is on in Saigon,” “The Movie in My Mind,” “Last Night of the World” and “American Dream,” it’s easy to see why this show is so loved.

A Look Back On David’s Life

T

he bond between a mother and son is unlike any other, and losing a child is one of the toughest things a parent can endure. My son accidentally passed away in December 2018. He was 15. My life changed in an instant. Because of his untimely death, the only organs we were able to donate were his “ocean eyes.” Two blind people can now see. When we moved to Southlake in June 2014, David was starting sixth grade. I am the first to admit it: He was not an easy kid and hated us for moving him away from Connecticut, the only home he had ever known. He gave us grief, had depression and anxiety and didn’t always make the best decisions. We persisted. We got him all the help he needed. Finally, about a year before he passed away, he told us he was finally happy. And he was. Yet it wasn’t until after he died that we found out how happy, kind, loving, compassionate, funny, caring and just how real David truly was through the help of his friends. At the celebration of David’s life, we asked people to write to David — an inside joke, a story, anything they wanted, but it had to be written to David. After hundreds of people came and went that weekend from across the country, I sat down one morning and read them all. The constant theme was how he helped his friends through dark places: to make up with other friends, to

forgive, to get over the things they couldn’t change, to just be happy. He made them laugh when they were sad. He gave great advice. He was the best friend they could ask for and then some. He had so much to give to the world, and the world had so much to give to him. It was enlightening to know that he was such an incredible person. Even knowing all of that, I didn’t know how to function, and honestly, I’m still working through it. I wanted to honor his memory. I got a tattoo of his signature — one of the coolest signatures I’ve ever seen. I made his urn, or as I call it, his vessel, in my pottery class. I see a grief counselor. I take Pilates classes to get the pain out of my system. I’m training our middle dog (we have three golden retrievers) to be a therapy dog. I am trying every day. And I get up every morning, put my mascara on and face the day as best I can. As I reflect on this first year without him, we survived a lot of firsts: His 16th birthday when we released 16 butterflies, Mother’s and Father’s Days, even the start of his junior year. We miss him every second of every day. The night before he died, he gave me a hug, and said, “Good night. I love you, Mom.” Those words will forever live in my head and heart.
