          pool cues
I’ve made a name for myself amongst family and friends as someone who gets the most out of his pool. For the Tesorieros, the fun starts with January hot tub sessions, then hits its peak in June and continues all year long. When you add up the summer heat with family values and our amazing real estate, it’s not hard to see why so many families invest heavily in their pools.
Forget about swimming holes — today’s pools are master designed right alongside the homes they adorn. This month, we dive into the latest trends in pool design with several custom builders who know how to bring lasting memories and value to their customers.
With or without pools, it’s no surprise that home valuations in Southlake continue to be on the rise. The city of Southlake reported the median home sales price in 2022 was $1,290,253. Thanks to robust home prices like these, Tarrant County realtors collectively sold over $10 billion in real estate for the second year in a row.

The market is still as hot as ever, so we once again worked with real estate brokers to highlight the area’s most successful and soughtafter agents. For those planning to traverse new waters in home ownership or those who just want to stay abreast of the market, we hope our annual 2023 Super Agents listing will be a helpful resource.

Gaylord Texan’s SummerFest Splashes Into 20th Season

For over 20 years, the Gaylord Texan has been creating wonderful summertime memories for families at its 10-acre waterpark and resort. That tradition continues through this year’s annual SummerFest, which brings more thrills, adventure and fun than ever before.
Running through Sept. 4, the Gaylord Texan’s SummerFest features a variety of pirate and princess-themed activities that the whole family can enjoy. At the Adventure Kids’ Clubhouse, your swashbuckling crew can tune into their inner artist and create treasured pieces that would make any young pirate jealous. The Hidden Treasure Hide and Sea-K allows treasure hunters to follow a long-lost pirate map and uncover hidden gems throughout 4 acres of gardens and winding waterways. Young adventurers are also invited to an interactive live show as they discover the wonders of summer alongside Sophie the Adventure Kid and all of her Texan pals.
Back by popular demand this year is Summer Cirque, a live show where performers achieve daring aerial feats and show-stopping balancing acts that will take your breath away. The Junior

Chef’s Camp allows the young aspiring chef to become a culinary apprentice, while the Buccaneer Bash dance party allows everyone to get loose on the dance floor. Families will have to race against the clock if they’re trapped inside one of the escape rooms, and the Ahoy, Matey! Animal Encounters brings you up close to some of the resort’s most exotic creatures. Plus the all-new Illuminate The Night Light Show fills the atrium with a stunning kaleidoscope of colors that will entrance you with its beauty.
Even more summer fun awaits at Paradise Springs, the 10-acre outdoor waterpark that has everything from a 600-foot-long lazy river and winding waterslides to a 6,000-square-foot family lagoon and a giant water treehouse. Private cabanas provide additional shade, TVs and soft seating for extra comfort, and the Relache Spa offers soothing treatments for the body, mind and soul through its rejuvenating massages and sauna. And while the kids are away, the adults get to play with chef-curated food and spirit pairings and sommelier-led wine dinners.
So what are you waiting for? Grab your swimsuit, dive into the Gaylord Texan and make this SummerFest an unforgettable one!

DIVE INTO THE LATEST TRENDS IN POOL DESIGN
Summer is all about ice-cold drinks and backyard barbecues with the family. But when the heat of Texas summer kicks in, there’s nothing quite like splashing into your own pool to cool off.
From diving boards and sun decks to steamy spas and gorgeous water features, the average pool in Southlake looks much different from 20 years ago. Today’s pools feature a wide variety of exciting amenities that transform your backyard into your own personal oasis.

“You’re talking travertine stone. You’re talking topof-the-line cascades and waterfalls. You’re talking spa jets, heaters, motors and silky smooth walls. Things are a little bit outside of the norm for swimming pools right now,” says Steven Fultz, whose company Metroplex Pools has been building area pools for over 10 years.
But it isn’t just the features that are changing — it’s also the appearance. As an established pool builder for nearly 20 years, Platinum Pools president Adrian Griffee says earthy tones are becoming more popular to match the style and splendor of luxury homes and their outdoor environments.
“The earthy porcelain is beautiful but not flashy, blending with its environment and letting the lush greens and blues pop without being overwhelming,” Adrian says. “The minor details speak volumes.”
Charlie Claffey of Claffey Pools sees this shift as well. Building luxury pools in the area for over 35 years, he sees projects shifting towards more movement, naturalistic colors and an organic aesthetic that breathes life into their designs.
“We have discovered that less is often better, and we strive to create light, airy and fresh projects,” Charlie says. “Modern and simple aesthetics are more prevalent in our current design trends compared to the past.”
With over 800,000 residential pools and growing, Texas continues to be one of the nation’s hottest markets for the pool industry, and it isn’t hard to see why. From award-winning luxury pool builders to familyowned and operated businesses, there are several skilled area professionals who know how to personalize your pool and make it feel unique to you.

        HAVE A SEAT
The spa isn’t the only place to relax in the pool. Thanks to ledge lounger seats, you can work on your tan while dipping into the pool at the same time. Simply position them at the shallow end of your pool, and you’re ready to lean back and bask in the sun while your feet wade in the water. Umbrellas can be hoisted to provide extra comfort and shade as well.

        SLIP AND SLIDE
The only thing kids love more than diving into a pool is sliding into it — that’s why more pool projects are incorporating slides into their designs. Equipped with their own spray nozzles, waterslides allow children — and the child in you — to find a new level of excitement splashing into the water. With some designs including their own waterfalls and zip lines, adding a waterslide can make your pool feel like a personal waterpark.
          ON THE EDGE
Gone are the days of simple inground oval-shaped pools. With more and more homeowners making use of their outdoor spaces, there’s a preference for customized looks that bring more style to their spaces. Many pool builders find their customers are investing in additional water features to make their pools feel even more exotic. Negative edges, or infinity pools, provide a seamless blend with the environments around them, while waterfalls and fountains create an even more refreshing ambiance. And if bubbles bring you joy, then there’s no limit to how much fun underwater jets will bring to your swim session.

        SPA TREATMENT
Swimming is fun, but sometimes you just need to unwind in the warm waters of a spa. Ranging between 90 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, spa temperatures can be adjusted to your liking depending on the season. Further complementing the overall design, spas can come either flush and level with the rest of the pool or be raised for higher elevation and a better view. Plus extra turf can be installed to provide a spot to dry off before you go inside.

            ROOFING IS AN ART
Meet DFW’s No. 1 Roofing And Solar Concierge Service

Roofing is not an easy business. From the decking to the shingles to the drainage, you want a trusted roofing expert that knows how to get the job done right. That’s where Artisan Roofing comes in.
Founded by Luis and Lorena Estorga, Artisan Roofing is a minority and women-owned roofing business that has been completing roofing repairs and replacements in the metroplex for the past 15 years. While its original focus was on residential roofing and contracting services, Artisan has since grown to provide even more services, including commercial roofing, claim assistance, finance options and solar system repair and installation.
“We’re like a one-stop shop for all of your roofing needs,” partner and Carroll alumni Jeremy Gilbert says. “Residential, commercial roofing, solar systems, real estate — all of this is under the Artisan brand.”
Artisan’s expertise ranges from the steep slopes of residential roofing to the flat surfaces of corporate
construction. Partnering with the best brands in the industry, Artisan knows the materials it needs to make sure your roof has strength and integrity, all at a cost that won’t break the budget. Size doesn’t matter when it comes to the project either, with the Artisan team delivering on every front from townhomes and HOAs to business developments.
The quality and craftsmanship are one of many reasons why Artisan is accredited by the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating, demonstrating its work ethic and commitment to its customers. As a member of the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas and a GAF Master Elite Company, Artisan is a proud winner of the Triple Excellence Award and is in the top 2% of roofing contractors in the U.S.
No matter what your roofing or solar needs are, Artisan can help you weather any Texas storm.
“Our dedication to delivering quality service and attention to detail has won over many satisfied customers,” Luis says. “We truly believe that roofing is an art.”

FOUR CARROLL STUDENTS WIN INAUGURAL CHANGE BOWL
Nine winners emerged from House of Shine’s inaugural Change Bowl this past spring — and four of them are Southlake Carroll Dragons. Taking place on April 1, the Change Bowl had local students ages 8-18 pitch their community improvement projects to local leaders in a “Shark Tank”-style format. Over $8,000 were awarded to teams and individuals based on their pitches. Dragon sisters Shaadana and Sanah Rajesh were one of them, and they were awarded $1,000 for their in-person and online curriculum on developing good habits and breaking bad ones. Meanwhile, Carroll Senior High School students Raghav Katta and Mubashir Jafry also received $1,000 to devise a 10-week plan to deliver 3D-printed toys and care packages to children in local hospitals.
CARROLL ROBOTICS COMPETES AT VEX ROBOTICS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The Carroll Robotics Program went national last semester. From April 25 to May 5, the top 800 high school teams from over 40 countries competed for the gold at the 2023 VEX Robotics World Championship. This was the ninth consecutive year Carroll Robotics had a presence at the world championship, and the first time that two teams reached the division finals, placing them among the top 0.1% of teams worldwide. Seven students even won the Judges Award for their engineering notebook and team interview. “The incredible performance of all Dragon teams has elevated the reputation of our robotics program,” instructor Leah Schwedler says. “The future is bright for this growing CTE program.”
          SOUTHLAKE HONORS MEMORY OF 9/11

The city of Southlake’s newest piece of public art pays tribute to the lives impacted on Sept. 11, 2001. Sculpted and designed by award-winning husband-and-wife team Mark and Diane Weisbeck, the 15-foot tall statue “Remembrance And Renewal” honors the memory of those who were affected by the attacks on the World Trade Center. The installation consists of two stainless steel towers lightly textured in green patina brass that emulates the color of the Statue of Liberty. The new statue can be seen in Liberty Garden on the eastern entrance of Bicentennial Park.

A reception for the exhibit will be held 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, July 23 in Southlake Town Hall.

The Grapevine-Colleyville-Southlake Moms League and its 300-plus members gathered for an evening of fun and fashion at The Great Gala 2023. Featuring couture gowns, an avant-garde fashion show and a raffle and live auction that featured over $40,000 in prizes, the evening was hosted by former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and bachelorette Melissa RycroftStrickland. This year’s gala raised over $70,000 for at-risk youth through the Stepping Stones Foundation in Keller. “Our league is passionate about giving every child the opportunity to have a safe and fulfilling life, and Stepping Stones gives local children the critical help they need to live a better life,” gala planner Brooke Kronschnabel says. Green says. “His continuous dedication to DWI enforcement goes above and beyond in all aspects.”

Despite a slightly reduced home sales volume in Tarrant County, the local real estate market remains strong. That’s because the average price of a home sold in Tarrant County has risen 15% to a peak of $427,820 in 2022, according to the Texas Real Estate Research Center at Texas A&M University.

Thanks to robust home prices, Tarrant County realtors have collectively sold over $10 billion in real estate for the second year in a row — a feat worth celebrating through our 2023 Super Agents program.
Using brokerage-provided sales data for 2022, the field of qualified realtors was narrowed down to 87 individual agents and 32 teams whose sales stood above their peers.

Mizzen+Main President Buttons Up Southlake Town Square Retail
Every guy has been there before — you start the work day with a crisp, freshly-ironed shirt, only to end up wrinkled and sweaty by lunch. By using athletic wear fibers to create comfortable and moisture-resistant clothing, Mizzen+Main feels they have the answer for today’s performance-minded men. The Dallas-based company is changing the face of menswear through hundreds of retail outlets throughout the country. We rolled up our sleeves with Ryan Kent, the company’s president, to talk shop about their newest location in Southlake Town Square.
I WAS A MIZZEN+MAIN CUSTOMER… long before joining the company. As an on-the-road business consultant traveling 40-plus weeks out of the year, I was wearing a suit and tie most weeks and usually ended my days quite disheveled. The thought of a dress shirt that was wrinkle- and water-resistant that you don’t sweat through by your first meeting at 10 a.m. was just super valuable to me. Being a customer was the first thing that drew me in.
          JOINING MIZZEN+MAIN CAME ABOUT
BY… unintentional networking. I was big into CrossFit at the time, and I met founder Kevin Lavelle during my workout. We became buddies and built a relationship. He was getting Mizzen+Main off of the ground, and we identified an opportunity where we both felt I could help the company. I became their seventh employee eight years ago, and I haven’t looked back since.
THE PERFORMANCE FABRIC IS THE CORE OF… making the shirt sweat and wrinkle-free. It’s made from a combination of Polyester and Spandex, giving it the feel of a gym shirt more than a work shirt. What makes us different is that we care about all of the shirt’s details, not just the fabric. We think of construction, fit, stitching, the evolution it’s had over the years. We’re very confident that the consumer won’t find a better shirt on the market than ours.
THE BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT… balancing physical with online retail. Some people prefer to shop online, while some prefer shopping in a storefront. The key is being where the customer is. Having our own brick-and-mortar stores and having hundreds of retail partners across the U.S. is a good way to increase brand awareness and get our product into more consumers’ hands. A customer who shops online and instore also has a higher lifetime value than those who are just single-channel shoppers — that’s why it’s important to do both really well.
WHAT EXCITES US SO MUCH ABOUT OPENING IN SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE IS… that we’ve always been a Dallas-based company, but we haven’t intentionally maximized the value of that. Opening our Southlake store allows us to serve our customers who know and love our brand while simultaneously introducing our product to potential customers in the Metroplex who aren’t aware of us yet. It’s a win-win either way.
DURING THE SUMMER, WE SEE CUSTOMERS NATURALLY TREND TOWARDS… casual shortsleeves given the Texas heat, then we see that trend backward to long-sleeves during the fall. One trend we’ve consistently seen in the past 12 to 18 months is that people really like to look good when they’re working. Whether you’re on a Zoom call, going to the office or pitching at a sales meeting, the days of just putting on a T-shirt are over. They want to look and feel good, and Mizzen+Main helps them to do just that.

THE EYE-OPENING PART OF THIS INDUSTRY HAS BEEN ITS… complexity. When I was an outsider, I thought it wasn’t that complicated — you just cut and sew fabric and make shirts. What I’ve learned once I got into the business is that there’s a lot of science that goes into it. There are a lot of people that hold very high degrees in textile manufacturing, going down to the yarn level with these fabrics to try and get these enhanced performance characteristics.
WE WANT MIZZEN+MAIN TO BE… every man’s favorite thing to wear every day. That’s our North Star. We believe that long-term value is created by customers who build a connection to the brand, and that connection is built emotionally not just through a great product, but through a tone of voice that speaks to them. We’re in the best position to be every guy’s favorite thing to wear every day.

For over 10 years, Wolfgang Puck’s Five Sixty restaurant faithfully served diners with rotating sky-high views from Dallas’ Reunion Tower. But after it closed in 2020, the search for a new fine dining experience began. The world-renowned Blau + Associates has risen to the occasion by setting Crown Block atop the Dallas skyline.
Opening in April, Crown Block is a worldclass steak and seafood concept by Chef Kim Canteenwalla, who previously served as executive chef at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. With a prime-grade menu, a buzzy bar scene and 360-degree skyline views from the top of Re-

union Tower, Crown Block has already become a big hit with over 10,000 reservations booked before it even opened.
“Since the initial stages of imagining this concept, it was imperative for us to be part of the local culinary culture,” Chef Canteenwalla says. “From working closely with small, local farms, ranchers and purveyors, Crown Block will offer the highest quality farm-raised meats and wild-caught seafood, capturing the true spirit of the Texas frontier and Gulf Coast.”
While it doesn’t spin like Five Sixty used to, Crown Block boasts stunning skyline views of Dallas nonetheless. Upon reaching the top floor,

you’ll first want to swing by the bar, which overlooks downtown and serves a bevy of carefullycrafted cocktails from the in-house mixologist. The Midnight Rambler is the restaurant’s signature cocktail. Made with Bulleit bourbon, Peychaud’s bitters and candied ginger, it’s a refresh on a classic drink. Meanwhile, the Orange Vesper provides a sweeter alternative with Lockwood Texas-style Gin and fresh blood orange juice. Its floor-to-ceiling wine display is equally as impressive with over 100 bottles that also include some sake options.
When it’s time to take a seat at your table, you won’t be disappointed by Crown Block’s extensive menu. Its beef menu brings out all of the best cuts, from Certified Black Angus to Japanese A5 Wagyu. The croquettes are deep-fried and served with hot mustard, while the bone-in striploin, tomahawk and dry-aged porterhouse are the biggest steak stars. If beef isn’t your forte, the grill offers other seasonal meats such as a duroc pork chop and a salmon steak stuffed with blue crab. You’ll want to make a special request for the triple-cooked fries, which are brined for 16 hours and served with a rich black truffle mayonnaise.
The Reunion Seafood Bar has even more exciting coastal offerings as well. The Texas-style seafood boil comes with a generous helping of Maine lobster, jumbo prawns, Alaskan King crab and grilled sourdough bread, while the iced seafood tower brings scallop ceviche and coastal oysters into the mix. If you really want to get fancy, the Regiis Ova Caviar delivers a savory sensation with a side of blue corn johnnycakes and citrus creme fraiche. You’ll want to explore the sushi menu as well, which has everything from rolls and sashimi to original creations like salmon toast and tuna cones.
If you have room, or even if you don’t, commemorate the special evening with one of Crown Block’s photo-worthy finishers. The Turtle Creek peanut butter bar is made with a dark chocolate mouse and a hazelnut crunch, while the creme brulee donut holes are filled with vanilla cream and complemented with maple sugar cotton candy. But the most luxurious dessert choice by far is the Society Party Cake, which is a layered chocolate cake with caramelized banana, pink peppercorn dust and a gold leaf placed on top.
With an event space one floor below called the Crown Room that can seat over 200 guests, even more people can see what it’s like to dine at Reunion Tower.

“We are proud to open our doors and welcome guests to an unmatched culinary experience that transcends a typical steakhouse,” owner Elizabeth Blau says. “It’s an honor to be part of the Reunion Tower story and have the privilege of serving a menu that brings forth the best of Texas hospitality with breathtaking views.” Photos by Bill Milne

Bawk & Boba Fried Chicken And Boba Tea Star At New Southlake Restaurant
Head chef Mingge Zhang has fond memories of her university days, going out with friends and discovering the newest fried chicken and boba tea restaurants. Now thanks to Boba Chicken, both of her favorite things have come together under one roof.

Opening in April, Boba Chicken is the newest restaurant to hit Southlake Boulevard. Located inside the former Beanvoy Coffee Lounge next door to Pokeworks, the restaurant focuses on serving both Asianstyle fried chicken and boba tea to hungry patrons.

With a culinary background that includes working in Michelin-starred Chicago restaurants Grace and Blackbird, Mingge felt inspired to bring something unique to the Southlake area.
“I always thought they both go together really well,” Mingge says. “I went to all of these boba tea stores and fried chicken restaurants, but none of them combined the two together. I was thinking, why don’t we do both? It’s a really good combination.”
The fried chicken is breaded in-house and uses an original spice and flour mix to create wings that are as crunchy as they are juicy. While the original spicy wings are flavorful enough on their own, what really makes the chicken pop with flavor are the homemade sauces. Mingge’s favorites are the Spicy Korean BBQ, which is made with a Gochujang paste and garlic mixture, and the saltier Soy Sassy made with Kikkoman sauce. Other flavors include Garlic Parmesan, Honey Mustard, Sriracha and Snowing Sweet Cheese.
But if boba is what you’re after, then its tea offerings do not disappoint. Using premium loose-leaf tea leaves, real fruit and tapioca balls, Boba Chicken’s refreshing beverages help balance out your meal whether you order a traditional milk tea or a frozen slushie. Even original creations like the Black Sugar Dirty Boba, which uses brown sugar syrup instead of regular boba pearls, bring a new spin on the beloved Asian staple.
“This concept really goes beyond generations, especially when it comes to the younger ones,” owner Chuck Lo says. “We hope this is the only place people go to for boba. We also hope this is the only place people go to for fried chicken. We want to become the go-to destination for both.”

But if you’re looking for a more elegant pitstop filled with inspired options, you’ll find Fig & Favor in Dallas to be a place you’ll want to stay a while.

“It’s more than just your typical marketplace,” design director Melinda Clark says. “We designed the space to feel intimate, fresh and cozy, as though you’ve left Dallas and found yourself in a corner shop on a charming street in Bordeaux, France.”
Chips and hot dogs don’t cut it here. Fig & Favor’s culinary offerings include a variety of refreshing handmade goods, including salads, sandwiches and pastas. THE 30-YEAR LEGACY OF THE GRAPEVINE VINTAGE RAILROAD

    BY CLAYTON TRUTOR

The city of Grapevine has always kept history at the forefront as it continues to grow and expand its long list of family entertainment options. It was in keeping with this philosophy of old meets new that inspired the city to purchase and restore a vintage 1896 diesel locomotive and several Victorian-era inspired coaches. Now celebrating 30 years of traversing the rails of North Texas, the Grapevine Vintage Railroad (GVRR) is still chugging along and bringing smiles to passengers of all ages.
The GVRR primarily relies on two engines for its travels — a 1953 diesel GP-7 engine called “Vinny” and a centuries-old steam engine named “Puffy.” Almost every week, the train takes off from downtown Grapevine’s Cotton Belt Railroad Depot at Main Street and rides around the metroplex. With two open-air touring coaches and four fully-restored and air-conditioned 1925 day coaches, passengers have several ways to ride on the rails in style.
“It's a very family-friendly experience,” says Leigh Lyons, the managing director of sales, marketing and communications for the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s a great way to experience how folks would have traveled across the western part of the country many years ago.”
It all came to be in 2000 when the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau purchased the railroad steam engine and six vintage passenger cars from the Fort Worth and Western Railroad (FWWR). Since 1993, the FWWR ran a route from Eighth Avenue to the Stockyards under the name “Tarantula Train” in recognition of the route’s many legs around Fort Worth. However, the word “tarantula” scared younger riders, and just as the cars were remodeled, so too was its name.
          TOURING THE TRACKS
The GVRR’s signature ride heads from the Grapevine Depot through Tarrant County into the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. Known as the Cotton Belt Route, this 65-mile weekend excursion connects Grapevine and Fort Worth’s historic districts, offering riders a unique window into the past.
While disembarked in Fort Worth, visitors can watch the twice-daily cattle drives through the Stockyards National Historic District, as well as the Stockyards Station, which has become a festival marketplace replete with food, entertainment and vendors.
With two hours to explore, kids can have fun interacting with the goats and sheep at the Fort Worth Petting Zoo across the street, while horse-

back, stagecoach and carriage rides can be booked at the Stockyard Stables nearby. When it’s time for a treat, a scoop of ice cream at Melt in Mule Valley always hits the spot. And if you and your little cowboy or cowgirl are looking for new boots, Old Gringo’s new flagship store will get them fitted just in time for the rodeo.
When it’s time to leave, the engine rides onto a turntable and switches tracks for the return ride home. Trips depart at 12:30 p.m. and return to Grapevine by 7 p.m., allowing passengers plenty of time to see all of the stockyard sites.

Two shorter trips are available regularly on the GVRR as well. The Grapevine Bear Creek Short Line lasts roughly one hour and is well-suited for younger children. It has a built-in storyline about stopping the notorious Mustang Jones from robbing the train. There is also the Trinity River Train Excursion, which departs from the Fort Worth Stockyards Station for a 45-minute ride. All three of the GVRR’s rides offer a unique view of the region and many smiling, waving onlookers along the route.
Beyond the standard rides, a series of special excursions dot the calendar and further punctuate the GVRR’s reputation as a fun attraction for passengers of all ages. This month, dads will enjoy hopping aboard for a Father’s Day train ride, while wine lovers can enjoy sipping varietals along to the tunes of ‘60s surf music along the Summer Wine Train in July.
However, many of the special excursions are tailored specifically to children.
Young fans of “Thomas The Tank Engine” can enjoy “A Day Out With Thomas,” in which the famed British locomotive takes passengers for a ride. This annual event is hosted in conjunction with Frisco’s Museum of the American Railroad. Riders can also get their pictures taken with Thomas, play games, win stickers and prizes and meet Sir Topham Hatt.
“We have a lot of families that come whose children really love trains,” Lyons says. “They’ve spent some time watching ‘Thomas The Tank Engine.’ They really want that authentic train experience.”
Proof that the GVRR is indeed a train for all seasons is the fact its most popular event celebrates the Christmas season. Running from the day after Thanksgiving until December 23rd, the North Pole Express began in the early 2000s as the Polar Express route, building on the popularity of Chris Van Allburg’s book and the subsequent film. Youngsters on the hour-long round trip wore their pajamas and listened to a reading of “The Polar Express,” with the ultimate highlight being a visit from Santa Claus. The GVRR has expanded on this framework to create an even more memorable Christmas excursion experience that includes caroling, cookies and a special visit from Mrs. Claus.
With a longstanding history and providing more than 300 rides each year, the GVRR continues to provide lasting memories for area families.

Seven For Swimming Swim The Week Away At The Arizona Biltmore

Built in 1929, the Arizona Biltmore lies on 39 lush acres just south of the Phoenix Mountain Preserves. The resort recently completed a major renovation, yet the Frank Lloyd Wright influence and its reminiscent Hollywood glamor still reign supreme across 700-plus well-appointed rooms and suites.
With the updates came many new sophisticated dining destinations, wellness centers and yes, a pool for every day of the week. That’s right — guests who plan their stay at this five-star resort would be smart to bring a multitude of bathing suits since this property boasts seven pools ranging from family-friendly to adults-only.
          Family Friendly
Waldorf Astoria is a brand recognized around the world for its commitment to elegant service across its global portfolio of ultra-luxurious properties. It may not be the first place you think of to bring the kids on vacation, but those who do won’t be disappointed. At the family-friendly Paradise Pool, there is ample decking and seating providing more than enough room for the entire family around its adjacent pools. This means everyone will be able to witness the joy of the pool’s main attraction — The Twist. Kids of all ages will want to make their way down all three of the slides shooting down this 65-foot-tall water slide. Even though the slides close by

6 p.m., the fun will last all day with temperatureregulated pools, air-conditioned cabanas and a splash pad for the little ones. Families who fancy water slides may choose to book a poolside room that keeps them steps away from the action, a distinct option the kids will never forget.

    Just Relax
The classically-tiled Catalina Pool is the longest-running pool that rests in the heart of the action on the property. Known historically as a platform for pool-side fashion shows and peeks at Hollywood royalty, many celebrities frequented the elegant retreat that lived on to become a star of its own — including Marilyn Monroe.
The Ocatilla Pool is where guests go for a more intimate lounging experience that includes open-air canvas cabanas and deluxe poolside loungers. The Ocatilla Pool bar keeps the fun flowing, but then again, you’re never far from food and drink no matter where you are at the resort.
Peace and seclusion rule at other villa pools such as the Bougainvillea, Saguaro Villas and Terrace Court Pool. If you’re looking to take a break from the poolside, the newly-reimagined spa and wellness experience awaits at Tierra Luna Spa and Sol Garden, which has since been named a 2023 Four-Star Spa by “Forbes Travel Guide.” There you can get a Grounding Quartz Massage, where the energetic healing powers of warm quartz will calm your mind and soothe your body. Or get in a workout through either a game of tennis or pickleball, or take advantage of the expansive fitness facilities with or without a trainer.
          Adults Only
As you would expect, the adults-only Saguaro Pool is smaller than its family-oriented counterpart, but that’s what helps give it its luxurious feel. Properly named after the 140-year-old Saguaro cactus that stands guard, the pool is just 3 feet deep, perfect for a relaxing dip that doesn’t disturb your drink from the nearby bar.
When it’s time to relax, renting a cabana at this quiet oasis is an investment in pure bliss. They suit up to six people and include televisions, chaise lounges, mister fans and mini-fridges to house your complimentary bottled waters and fruit.

Perhaps the best thing about The Saguaro Pool is that it’s temperature-controlled to 82 degrees and open 24 hours a day. In the evenings, escape the heat and the sun with mood lighting and water features that make for an entirely new date night vibe.

At Home With… Mark And Terri Messing Southlake

Couple Brings Santa Fe Style Home
Enlisting the help of Dallas-based Kitchen Design Concepts, the remodel took four months to complete. Residential designer Katie Bacon says the biggest challenge was mixing all of the different aesthetics together to make it cohesive.
“Santa Fe style has a lot of depth and textures,” Katie says. “It isn’t cookie-cutter. It’s a conglomeration of several different things.”
Luckily, she says Terri has been very collaborative and accommodating to her team throughout the entire process.
“Terri’s been incredibly courageous in mixing all of these different materials together,” Katie says. “I don’t get many clients that are that flexible, so it was really fun to plan all that out and bring it together with her.”
Those mixtures can be seen in the cabinets, which are made with poplar wood, and the backsplashes that utilize a mix of natural greystone and golden glass. The bronze CopperSmith range hood complements the walls and cabinetry, while the dark wood island brings another layer of contrast to the overall aesthetic.
There are two things Mark and Terri Messing love more than anything else: art and traveling. They wanted to ensure both of these passions were reflected in their kitchen during its most recent remodel.
Moving to the Coventry Manor neighborhood in 1996, Mark and Terri were quick to establish their roots in the area. Mark started working as a gynecologic surgeon for local health systems, while Terri began volunteering for the Southlake Arts Council and Art In The Square. Her involvement with the local arts scene grew tenfold when she co-founded the Apex Arts League in 2007. Since then, she’s helped organize live music performances, theater shows and art festivals all around Southlake.
“I’m very involved in the arts community,” Terri says. “I consider myself instrumental with what’s happening with the arts in this part of the Metroplex.”
After their two kids graduated from high school, Mark and Terri were looking to renovate their 27-year-old home, and they agreed the kitchen needed the most attention. Equipped with a butler’s pantry and a raised bar, Mark and Terri wanted the kitchen to match the style of their summer home in Santa Fe with natural wood patterns and earthy hues.
“It’s all about the little details,” Terri says. “We wanted everything in the kitchen to fit with what was already here.”
But appearance wasn’t the only thing that was important to Katie — she also wanted the new kitchen to be convenient for the Messings and their guests. That’s why she installed new features such as a wine fridge, a sliding door and rolling shelves for larger appliances inside the pantry.
“If it’s accessible, you’re going to use it more — that’s just a fact,” Katie says. “That’s why we spent a lot of time making sure everything was where it needed to be.”
The finished project didn’t just impress Mark and Terri. It also impressed the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, earning a perfect 15 out of 15 score and winning the Contractor of the Year Award for Residential Kitchen over $150,000.
“They liked how the space transformed from what it was and how we were able to utilize the different angles while making it an open space,” Katie says. “At the end of the day, we really take pride in building something that’s going to serve our clients and work for them.”
That’s exactly what this new kitchen has done for the Messings. Whether she’s cooking a nice meal or hosting a large group of people, Terri says the new kitchen is perfect for any occasion.
“It’s unique, beautiful and so much easier to use now,” Terri says. “I walk into my house all the time, turn on the lights, look and say with pride ‘That’s my kitchen.’ I’m still amazed by it. It does everything that we wanted it to do and more.”

            Santa Fe Form Meets Function
It’s one thing to design your kitchen to visually stand out with bold colors and beautiful tiled backsplashes, but it’s another thing entirely to make it functional and easy to use. This recent award-winning remodel in Southlake manages to do both. Masterfully designed by the homeowners alongside Dallas-based Kitchen Design Concepts, this kitchen remodel is the gold standard not only for its sandy tones and Pueblo-style architecture but also for its convenience and accessibility. Whether you fall for its Santa Fe influence or practicality, you’ll want your next kitchen remodel to look like this.
          KITCHEN CONVENIENCE
Adjacent to the refrigerator is the kitchen’s miniature pantry, which makes spices and appliances readily available with just a push of its sliding door. Equipped with rollout shelving and LED lighting, this pantry conveniently houses all of the large appliances you need at a moment’s notice. Gone are the days of picking up heavy mixers and blenders and haphazardly placing them onto your countertop. Cleanup is just as easy when your trusty appliances are slid back in place for safe storage.
          ISLAND DINING
Once dinner is ready, serve your spread on the kitchen’s central island. With a black walnut wood base and a quartz countertop, this island is the perfect spot to bring people together for a selfserve setting. The temperature-controlled wine fridge provides easy access to your finest bottles, while the attached dishwasher allows you to conveniently deposit dirty plates. The overhead pendant lights are also hand-crafted from stone by Santa Fe company Mostly By Nature, further exemplifying the kitchen’s natural aesthetic.
          BACKSPLASH OF TEXTURES
The one thing that embodies the kitchen’s Santa Fe style more than anything else is its mixture of materials, and you see that most in the kitchen’s dual backsplashes. With one backsplash made with natural greystone bricks and another made of golden glass diamonds, all of the patterns align in this mesmerizing display of textures.

Willie Nelson's Outlaw Music Festival Rides Into Dallas

Th is year marks the 90th birthday of legendary singer-songwriter Willie Nelson, and what better way to celebrate than to take his renowned Outlaw Music Festival on the road for the largest tour to date? On June 30, the Dos Equis Pavilion will host an unforgettable night of music featuring Willie Nelson and The Family, as well as a lineup of talented musicians including Whiskey Myers, Flatland Cavalry, Brittney Spencer and Particle Kid.
As the face of the outlaw country music movement, Willie has captivated audiences with his unique sound and style for decades. The East Texas native launched multiple albums during the 1960s, including “And Then I Wrote” and “Country Willie — His Own Songs.” But his breakthrough didn’t come until 1973 when he released his highly-acclaimed album “Shotgun Willie.” He went on to produce a series of successful hits such as "Red Headed Stranger," "Stardust" and "Honeysuckle Rose," which gar -
nered Willie numerous No. 1 singles, Grammy Awards and a devoted fan base. Over 50 years in the music industry later, Willie is still on our minds with his landmark 99th studio album “I Don’t Know A Thing About Love” coming out earlier this year.
Throughout his career, Willie has teamed up with many big names in music, including Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Ray Charles. Now he’s teaming up with some of the best performers in the industry for an unforgettable day of music and celebration. After a day full of folk and fiddle, stop by Outlaw Village where local artisans will be selling their crafts, clothes, art and jewelry. The only thing more legendary than this festival are the outlaws that you’ll see performing in it. Photo by Bob Tilden
