gotcha day! From chewed-up shoes and little accidents to long walks and even longer bark sessions, choosing to share a home with a dog is often a young family's first big joint decision. When area families are ready to bring a furry friend into the fold, many head a few miles west to the Humane Society of North Texas’ Keller facilities. As the day’s anticipation reaches its peak, they collectively catch a glimpse of the city’s most loveable piece of public art. From the tip of its upturned tail to its shiny but not-wet nose, “Playful Puppy” measures in at 8-and-a-half feet long and stands well over 6 feet tall. A gift to the city from former Keller graduate and Dallas sculptor Brad Oldham, this fetching Fido mirrors the joy and companionship found as we embark upon life’s journey with a new best friend. And when Gotcha Day eventually leads to milestone moments, like when our Stylin’ Pets turn 6, it begs the question, “Is it time to throw a puppy party?” With help from readers and our friends at Haute Dog Photography and The Barkday Planner, we did just that, showering our favorites from this year’s photo contest with cake, hugs and plenty of photos.

Setting Up Your Financial Future Merit Financial Advisors Offers Wealth Management Tips What steps should I take to prepare for my retirement? First of all, take care of your spouse or partner — retirement is a big change for them as well. Secondly, understand that your financial life is going to feel different. You will not be getting those weekly or bi-weekly paychecks, so you’ll need a plan to replace that income. Thirdly, stay connected. I have seen so many retirees disconnect — they have so much time and become paralyzed by it all. Stay connected with friends and family and enjoy the fruits of your labor. How should I invest my money? My mother never trusted people who didn’t eat their own cooking, so be sure your advisor is invested in the products they are recommending for you. If they are staying away from an investment but recommending it for you, find out why and be sure you understand. If you don’t know what part of your goals the investment recommendation satisfies, you can’t feel like all of your financial needs will be addressed. How do I set my family up financially when I pass away? Preparing your family for anyone’s passing is emotional. When it comes to finances, host a family meeting and get your loved ones comfortable with an advisor and understanding how planning works. You don’t have to get into the specifics about how much you have, but be sure to share your wishes for any assets you want to leave behind with your loved ones. Also, have them documented in your estate plan. What does an initial consultation look like? We ask clients a lot of questions about their family, their loved ones, their fears, their concerns — all of the things you typically don’t talk about at parties. No one is going to care more about your money than you, so you want an advisor who will answer all of your questions and will even ask the questions you should ask.

MAN OF STEEL Local Sculptor Crafts Larger-Than-Life Metallic Icons BY DAVID DUNN

SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

A

rt can be created from anything. Whether you paint a canvas, shape a clay mold or draw on a sheet of paper, every piece of carefully crafted work tells its own story. Regardless of the medium, art is only limited by the artist’s imagination — and Brad Oldham’s is limitless. Working in DFW for over 25 years, Brad Oldham is an award-winning sculptor from Keller who primarily works with various metals, including brass, aluminum, bronze and stainless steel. Brad’s creative and crafty pieces can be found throughout the Metroplex, whether it’s a trio of traveling men in Deep Ellum, a 6-foot-tall playful puppy in Keller or a furious dragon at District 114 in Southlake. From sculptures of people and plants to animals and dragons, Brad’s vision for larger-than-life icons remains as grandiose as ever. FEB 24 • 15

MOLDING HIS PASSION Creativity runs in the Oldham family. As a child, Brad’s father Jack worked for several companies as an efficiency engineer and consultant, including General Dynamics and Bell Helicopter. His brother, internationally acclaimed fashion designer Todd Oldham, launched his own clothing line in 1989, and Brad worked at his brother’s business from high school until after college. “I made buttons,” Brad explains. “They were everything from ceramics to plastics to metals. The metal casting in particular was really fun and kind of what I enjoyed most.” After Todd Oldham was licensed to Jones Apparel in 1999, Todd introduced Brad to New York architect David Rockwell, whose design firm worked on highend restaurants for chefs such as Bobby Flay, Nobu Matsuhisa and Emeril Lagasse. With newfound inspiration, Brad expanded his metalworking skills from small buttons to larger and more involved products. “I did everything from door handles to light fixtures to railings to columns,” Brad recalls. “It was all decorative stuff — just highly intricate, detailed items with small sculptures for fun.” Brad continued manufacturing metallic structures for high-end businesses across the country until he and Reel FX’s Brandon Oldenburg were commissioned in 2007 to design a public art piece celebrating Deep Ellum’s arts scene. The end result was “The

Traveling Man,” a trio of statues depicting a blues musician emerging from the ground and walking around the city before sitting down to strum his guitar while waiting for the train. “The Traveling Man” cost $1.4 million and took two years to complete. But once it was finished, it quickly became a prominent icon in downtown Dallas, with people coming to admire the 40-foot wonder and take pictures with it. A year after it debuted, the sculpture was included in “Americans For The Arts’” year-in-review program, while Brad later won the prestigious Artisan Award from the Texas Society of Architects. “There aren’t a lot of really large sculptures in the world, so it felt freeing to work on a piece of that magnitude,” Brad says. “After that sculpture, I saw a direction there that I really enjoyed and wanted to go. My focus was on sculpture work from that point onward.” ANIMAL ARTISTRY Since pivoting to sculpture work, Brad’s many innovative installations can be found across the state. One of his most notable ventures includes “Running With The Moon” in San Antonio, a 31-foot statue that’s made out of 508 handmade butterflies. He also created sculptures for Hall-of-Fame-caliber athletes, including Texas Rangers pitcher Nolan Ryan, NHL great Wayne Gretzky and Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki. He even did a statue depicting a bird skateboarding for his Dallas headquarters that represents the leap of faith that artists and entrepreneurs such as himself take every day. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

One recurring motif throughout most of his pieces is his use of animals. From his “Stacked Friends” piece depicting a dog, rabbit and bird sitting on top of each other to a squirrel conducting like a maestro to the “Miss Llinda Llee Llama,” Brad’s depictions of animals are as clever as they are cheeky and fun. “The animals are something we really enjoy,” Brad says. “The playfulness and approachability of them is something that people really respond to.” And he never works on his art alone — his wife and partner of 23 years, Christy Coltrin, is usually the one researching and coming up with sculpture concepts. One of his favorite contributions of hers is with his piece titled “Princess Pig,” which includes a quote that says “She never really took to the farm.” “She comes up with a lot of great ideas,” Brad says. “How we build it, the installation and how we get from point A to point B is mostly me after we finalize the design and narrative.” While Brad appreciates every opportunity that comes his way, he relishes every chance to work on a piece closer to his home. He especially takes pride in the “Playful Puppy” piece he constructed for the city of Keller back in 2021, which is a 6-and-a-halffoot stainless steel statue that reminds him of his own four-legged family member, Pete. “It was a pleasure to work out there,” Brad says. “It’s just nice to give something back to your hometown.” The same sentiment applies to his Southlake piece as well. In 2020, Brad was commissioned by resident and business owner Jeff Medici to create a piece for the Dragon community. The result was “Fury,” an 8-ton dragon sculpture that overlooks Kimball Park. At 28 feet tall with a wingspan of 41 feet, Fury is one of the biggest pieces Brad’s ever made. “We got to play around with the dragon concept and make it fierce-looking but approachable — it’s kind of like Southlake’s protector,” Brad says. “It was really fun to create a dragon that’s beloved by the community and the local alumni. We took it very seriously because the dragon is an icon that’s going to last hundreds of years. We want generations to look back at it and say ‘That’s my dragon. That’s my hometown.’” SHAPING COMMUNITY From dogs and dragons to towering titans, Brad’s come a long way from his days of molding buttons for his brother’s fashion business. Yet for him, the process has always been the same. “When you make a shirt, a skirt or a pair of pants, you start off with a pattern and fabric and you just go through the steps,” Brad says. “Art is the same way. Whether you’re making thousands of small sculptures or one large one, the same effort goes into it. Even when you work on a button, it’s still kind of a small sculpture.” Brad is always committed to delivering the highest-quality piece he can to every one of his clients. Yet, Christy says the best thing about him is that he doesn’t make art for himself — he makes art specifically for the people he serves. FEB 24 • 17

Christy Coltrin and Brad Oldham alongside the Galveston Beach Trio

“What sets Brad apart is his unique blend of experience, knowledge, artistry and confidence,” Christy says. “We enjoy collaborating on the design and creation of public art sculptures that actively connect with communities. I don’t think there is anyone else working in the public art space today that has his extensive range of skills and creativity.” Christy likened their consultation process to dating — getting to know their clients better and understanding what makes them special so they can create a piece that speaks most to their community. “We don’t just create what we want — we make what works for the community that we’re building and working in,” Brad says. “You gotta build it in such a way that it’s appreciated.” What brings Brad the biggest pride is seeing how well communities receive his work and how quickly they are to welcome it as part of their home. “That’s one of the greatest things about putting sculptures out to the public,” Brad says. “We love hearing the feedback and watching people take photos and make it their own. Because it’s not ours anymore. Sure we created it, but it’s theirs now. We may be a small company, but we can do really big things.”

GRAPEVINE-COLLEYVILLE STUDENTS BUILD RAMP FOR SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS Engineering and robotics students from Grapevine-Colleyville ISD put their technical prowess to the test for a good cause. According to GCISD, students modified a ramp for Special Olympics students to use for the very first bocce ball tournament taking place this April. Using PVC pipes and polycarbonate material to make a simple bowling ramp, it took students two weeks to design the attachment. “To think of something and be able to draw it up on a sketch and to watch it come to life in a bigger aspect, it definitely feels like an accomplishment,” junior Trevor Bahlenhorst says. The solution-based program offers single moms in Grapevine and throughout DFW the tools they need to complete their college degree without working full-time. Education Track resources include providing housing, childcare, financial planning, professional counseling, legal assistance and more. “Not only will this new Education Track help single moms achieve more and change the trajectory of their children’s lives, but this program can also help address some of the trained workforce gaps in our community,” CEO and founder Lisa Rose says. “This is a win for everyone.” 22 • FEB 24

SPOTLIGHT business CLASSIC CHEVROLET NAMED WORLD’S TOP DEALERSHIP Grapevine’s Classic Chevrolet has been recognized by the company as the best Chevrolet dealership in the world for 2023. With a focus on customer satisfaction, industry-leading pricing and a large selection of new and pre-owned cars, Classic Chevrolet sets itself apart in a highly competitive market. “The thriving economic landscape of Texas has played a crucial role in our success,” owner Tom Durant says. “Our customers have learned that when we say something, we do it. This is a big win for us and the thousands of customers who have trusted us over the years.” GRAPEVINE FAITH UNVEILS NEW BASEBALL STADIUM Grapevine Faith Christian School hit a home run with the grand opening of its new baseball stadium. In previous years, Grapevine Faith’s baseball teams practiced off-site at Oak Grove Park, but as the team grew, families and sponsors began funding to develop a home field facility. With new batting cages, home and visitor bullpens and a berm that provides additional seating, Grapevine Faith has a new home for its ball players. “Not only does the new baseball stadium provide a top-notch facility for our athletes to excel on, but it will also bring people together,” athletic director Patrick Reents says. “From hosting games and tournaments, we are confident this field will become a gathering place for families and baseball fans all over the community.” BUZZED BULL CREAMERY REBRANDS TO SCOOP & A SHOT A scoop and a shot are waiting in Grapevine. Opening in 2022, Buzzed Bull Creamery was an ice cream parlor that specialized in serving alcoholinfused scoops using liquid nitrogen. But last month, the store announced its temporary closure to rebrand to Scoop & A Shot. According to the announcement, the store will no longer be a made-to-order liquid nitrogen creamery, but offerings will still include alcoholic and nonalcoholic ice cream served in martini glasses. Scoop & A Shot will reintroduce itself to the community later this year.

A Gift Of The Heart Show Your Love With Carolina Bucci’s 18-karat Hoop Earrings

F DETAILS

Carolina Bucci Small Cuore Hoop Earrings Dimensions: 1.37” W x 1.37” L Material: 18-Karat Gold Price: $1,830 CarolinaBucci.com

28 • FEB 24

inding the perfect gift for your special someone can be a challenge, yet Carolina Bucci’s small cuore hoop earrings have everything you could look for in one dynamic and elegant piece. Carrying a romantic touch in its namesake, “Cuore” translates to “heart” in Italian, perfectly capturing the design’s shape and origin. With traditional ties and a modern aesthetic, these lovingly-shaped hoops are more than just an accessory — they’re the focal point of any style. Using the Florentine Finish, a signature technique hailed from 15th-century craftsmanship in Florence, Italy, Carolina Bucci artisans hand-forged 18-karat gold metals with a diamond-tipped tool that yields luminous and eye-catching indentations. Designed

by a fourth-generation jeweler, each distinctive creation is interwoven with the rich heritage of the Bucci family and hand-crafted in the goldsmiths’ quarter of Florence, where the family’s lineage of fine jewelers remains. Complete with any style, plenty of color variations are available in yellow, white, pink or black gold for those who mix and match or stick with a uniform look. Hoop sizes also range from large to small and “huggies” for those wishing to stand out or add a more delicate touch. Extra flair can be added with Carolina Bucci’s 1885 links that extend the length and broaden the style of these shining staples. While they may be a centerpiece to any look, the small cuore hoop earrings will surely bring out the beauty of the real main event – your beloved.

ANYTHING IS PAW-SSIBLE As a mom of seven dogs, Amanda Shaw understands the unbreakable bond between pets and their owners. That’s why she left her Ph.D. program in neuroscience and put her mind toward something she found more fulfilling – helping people make lifelong memories with their pets. Combining her two passions of pets and party planning, Amanda began her own business, The Barkday Planner, to create any custom-themed pet celebration you can think of. “I’ve always been a planner at heart,” Amanda explains. “I plan our vacation itineraries, a lot of friends' birthdays and bachelorette parties, [but] planning for me was never something I saw I could do full time in an industry that I loved. I didn’t want to be a wedding planner, I didn’t want to be a party planner for kids – I wanted to immerse myself with pets. So when I put those two together, it was perfect.” At the same time, Robyn Pope retired from the FBI after 14 years to pursue a career driven by her passions – photography and animals. Robyn started by taking end-of-life portraits of her own beloved dog, then transitioned into taking portraits of rescue animals for adoptions. As more people fell in love with her craft, she leapt at the opportunity to start her own business Haute Dog Photography. “I realized life could literally be puppies and rainbows every day,” Robyn remarks. “I’ve always been obsessed with my dogs and horses. They are my life, and I’ve realized how many other people out there feel the exact same way.” After connecting through social media, Amanda and Robyn saw an opportunity to amplify their impact with a partnership. By combining their skills in professional photography and luxurious party planning, this dynamic duo creates and captures special moments that families treasure forever. Based in Dallas, these ladies travel across the Metroplex and beyond to make custom-themed parties come to life. “Both of us create core memories, and that's the thing that really brings our work together,” Robin explains. From conception to execution, they can bring any fur-friendly celebration to life, whether indoors or outdoors, maximalist or minimalist, thematic or randomized. Their celebrations aren’t just centered around birthdays either. Your pup can jump in on an Easter egg hunt with a few hidden treats, pose for the family holiday card or chow down during a pet Friendsgiving – the possibilities are endless. "We put it all out there," Robyn says. "Everything that we have goes into every client that we work with, because we genuinely want other people to be as fulfilled and have the memories and experiences that we want to have with our own pets." Although the idea of a pet party may seem a little far-fetched to some, Amanda encourages others to not knock it until they try it. Naysayers will quickly change their minds once they see their pup’s eyes light up, tongues out and tails wagging. “[Guests will] pull me aside and they're like, ‘Really? This is all for the dog? I'm a little skeptical [about] this,’ and then they find me at the end and they're like, ‘This was freaking awesome,’” Amanda remarks. SOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

As pet parties are becoming more popular, going allout for our canine companions seems less unconventional. According to the Pew Research Institute, 51% of pet owners consider their pets to be part of their family. To many people, having a party for your fur baby is no different than throwing a party for a child. “It’s one of those things where people are becoming a bit more accustomed to it than they were five years ago,” Amanda says. “It’s acceptable for human kids. Why isn’t it acceptable for my kids?” PLANNING A POOCH PARTY Planning a pup party is not far off from organizing any other celebratory event. When deciding on a location, the most important thing to remember is your audience – slobbery, vocal and rambunctious. The larger the party, the more likely it should be held outdoors, such as a park, pet resort, backyard or off-leash venue. For smaller gatherings, homes and pet-friendly patios offer the perfect space if you’re OK with replacing goody bags with doggy bags for emergency cleanups. “There are several factors that come into play to ensure the pet is comfortable, the setting isn't too overwhelming for the pets and that it's an overall good fit,” Amanda notes. Once you’ve picked a spot, it’s time to invite the pack. Buddies from the dog park, neighborhood pals and furry members of your family and friend groups can get their wag on, but beware of the party poopers. Dogs who tend to be aggressive or territorial may be a biting risk, while young puppies or ill dogs pose a risk to themselves and others. And although it’s a pet party, don’t forget the humans. Designated dog-free places to sit, mingle and eat are essential to ensuring everyone has a ball. “Make sure it's safe and fun — I'm super big on those going hand in hand,” Amanda says. “We monitor the play, especially if it's off-leash, to make sure the dogs are safe throughout. If we see any [aggressive] behaviors, we need FEB 24 • 57

to remove them from the situation, allow them to calm down and have fun.” Creativity knows no bounds when it comes to choosing a theme, and dog parents are willing to spend several hundred to thousands of dollars to spoil their pup. Your pet could have a “Mean Girls” or “The Office” party, a gathering of cowboys and princesses, a “Super Mario Bros.” celebration, a Chanel and Prada bash (or “Chew-nel” and “Paw-da”) and even a retrothemed social with record players, roller skates and rotary phones. “It's just like the children's party you see on Instagram or the beautiful Pinterest party — it’s just literally tailored to a dog,” Amanda describes.

UNLEASH THE FUN Decorations like light-up marquee numbers, party hats, backdrops, balloons, signage and other thematic touches are great attention-grabbers, but what makes your pet’s big day truly special are the details that reflect their personality. Engage partygoers and pets alike by having an area where they can play games, including frisbee, catch and tug-of-war, as well as a photo booth and pawpainting space for fun keepsakes. While the humans are entertained, your pet and their pup pals can enjoy activities such as a ball pit, inflatable pool, bubble machine, race and obstacle courses and a treat-driven scavenger hunt. Mark the occasion by praising the good boys and girls with homemade dog-friendly treats and a cake for the cutest frosting-covered nose moment. Incorporating stations with your pet’s favorite treats, toys and activities will keep the paws moving and good times flowing. “Stations are a fun and interactive way to keep the guests entertained, both the furry guests and the humans,” Amanda exclaims. With a celebration of this caliber, you’ll want to have the cameras on hand and ready. Whether you’re equipped with a smartphone or professional camera, endless photo opportunities await with all of those precious puppy-eyed looks everyone loves. “Partygoers can grab great snapshots by getting down to the pet's eye level and watching for the perfect head tilt,” Robyn explains. If you’re not as confident in your photography skills, enlist the help of a professional so you can focus more on making memories rather than documenting them. “It's more than just a party — it's an emotional moment and a memory-making experience,” Amanda says. “[Parents] can reminisce and look back on the videos [and] professional photography that captured them diving into their first birthday cake.” After a fun-filled day with all of your pet’s favorite people, treats and toys, give yourself a round of applause for celebrating them with loads of love and style. No matter the age or occasion, our furry family members deserve the same care we show ourselves. Whether you take on paw-ty planning from start to finish or have a professional assist in making the magic happen, your closest companion will raise the woof with joy every time.

acos and tequila go hand in hand, especially in Dallas’ eclectic foodie scene. While many renditions of Mexican cuisine are considered unhealthy, they don’t all have to be. In fact, West Village’s newest restaurant aims to reinvent the way we see and are inspired by Mexican fare. Created by Local Favorite Restaurants, owner and operator of neighborhood originals such as El Fenix, Del Toro BBQ and Twisted Root, UnaVida is a modern Mexican concept that emphasizes a fresh, innovative approach to traditional Mexican cuisine. Speckled with a diverse

range of books and wall art, UnaVida’s quaint and inviting space sits in the middle of West Village’s vibrant dining scene, featuring a large covered patio that connects guests to the hustle and bustle along McKinney Avenue. Inspired by the culture and communities of Oaxaca, Mexico, UnaVida is adorned with colorful fabrics, hand-brushed murals and artisanally crafted art that harkens back to the cuisine’s origins. Many furnishings are also made with repurposed organic materials that impart a warm and naturalistic feel, from wooden sofa frames to live plants scattered throughout. Its open-kitchen de-

LOCALFLAVOR review sign and full-service U-shaped bar also offers a frontrow seat to the food and drink preparation, while a semi-private room accommodates parties of 12 for more personal gatherings. While the setting is as intimate as it is authentic, UnaVida’s menu is nothing short of a food mecca. Curated by award-winning chef Matt McCallister, many dishes fuse classic Mexican flavors with sustainable and locally sourced ingredients that cater to every kind of diner. “We believe in letting the ingredients take center stage, telling their own story on the plate,” Matt explains. “It’s not just about serving great food — it’s about how food can bring people together, creating lasting memories around the table.” Start out with one of its lively libations, which are uniquely created and refined through boiling, extracting and dehydrating to yield one-of-a-kind combinations. “From the onset, the strategy was to create a culinary-focused brand and that did not exclude the bar,” Matt expresses. “A mixologist can mix drinks and pair spirits. We took this a step further and started in the kitchen.” Drinks like the Cantarito pull from the region of Jalisco, melding ingredients like tequila blanco, grapefruit, Jarritos, lime and orange for a fun citrus fix. The Guava Cooler takes a tropical approach with vodka, lime, grapefruit, pineapple and guava, while the Cactus Caipirinha with cachaça spirit, kiwi, jugo verde “green juice,” lime and agave make for a more refreshing sip. A full selection of wine and ice-cold Mexican craft or domestic beers are also available for a simple starter. When it’s time to eat, order a shared plate for the table, such as the heartcakes made with heart of palm and sliced avocado, salsa Veracruz, cabbage slaw and lime aioli for a creamy, indulgent taste. For the main course, “platos de la casa'' or “house plates'' include a variety of classic options with a twist, such as the vegan smothered burrito stuffed with tricolor quinoa, refried lentils, black beans, melted peppers, onion, zucchini and topped with cashew queso, pico de gallo and guacamole. To mix things up, bowls like the Sedona start with your choice of Mexicali rice, cilantro rice or quinoa, then toss in black beans, sweet potato, pickled golden beets, roasted corn, purple cabbage slaw, jalapeño ranch, queso crema, chili-dusted tortilla strips, ginger pepita and jícama, aka. Mexican turnip. Translating to “one life,” UnaVida brings together the essentials of living well – good company, indulgent food and memorable experiences. “We only have one life, and we’re meant to enjoy it fully,” Local Favorite Restaurants founder and owner Mike Karns says. “That means to us - eat the best foods made from the highest quality ingredients to fuel you to live your best life. We believe in eating all of the good things - and drinking tequila too.” Photos by Kayla Enright

Roanoke Rifts On Nightlife

Rock ‘N’ Roll Lounge Vibes Loom At The Rô On Oak Energetic vibes combined with eclectic and luxurious designs will have lounge lovers heading west, not east, to Roanoke’s new nighttime hot spot, The Rô On Oak. Founded by childhood friends Gabriel Miller and Jonathan Condos, The Rô On Oak is a hip new concept that delivers incredible cocktails, delicious bar food and an unparalleled club experience for those looking for a fun night out on the town. Invoking the swankiness of Upper East Side New York with the cool comfort of Hollywood Hills, Gabriel says they aimed to bring a unique high-end social scene to the area. “People want to see other people dress up, what their haircut is like, what they’re drinking and eating, what kind of overall vibe they have going on,” Gabriel says. “We designed this place so that people can be the artwork too.” Guests experience The Rô On Oak’s level of luxury right away with a wood-clad entryway accented with hints of burnt copper. A moiré silk ceiling blankets over the entire venue, while custom plush booths fill the spaces in between with style and splendor. Perhaps nothing is more stylish than the club’s violet marble-topped bar that awaits thirsty patrons. And at the center of it all is The Rô’s fireplace that casts a warm golden glow throughout. Inspired by the rock ‘n’ roll icons from Gabriel and Jonathan’s youth, The Rô’s drinks are all named after famous rock songs, including Led Zeppelin’s “Ramble On” bourbon cocktail, Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” scotch and the Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up” espresso martini. A variety of shareables that include deviled eggs, chili garlic shrimp, Wagyu meatballs and bruschetta with goat cheese are all served with flair. For those looking to liven up their atmosphere, a grand piano is positioned in the main foyer ready for anyone to come in and play their favorite tunes. “A lot of people come here for the food and the drinks, but they’ll stay for the playlist,” Jonathan says. “I’ll find them still here two or three hours later — they canceled their reservation because they wanted to stay for the vibe. I love that people want to be here.” Photos by Chase Hall

Cookies For A Cause Girl Scout Cookie Season Is Here

The boxes are back in town. Whether you’re a fan of the classic flavors or the newest varieties, you can now find your favorite Girl Scout cookies across Southlake and the surrounding cities. From a grassroots project that began in 1917 to becoming the largest female entrepreneurial program in the world, the Girl Scout cookie program has been an American staple for generations. According to the Girl Scouts of the USA, nearly 700,000 Girl Scouts build courage, confidence and character through the cookie program, which sells around 200 million boxes every year. This year’s theme, “Unbox The Future,” focuses on removing the social barriers that keep girls boxed in while inspiring them to create a more equitable future. Each purchase creates opportunities for young girls to learn, grow and thrive while proceeds go toward local Girl Scouts troops. When it comes to the best flavor, cookie-loving consumers have no shortage of favorites. Newer variations include Adventurefuls, a decadent brownie-inspired cookie with caramel-flavored cream and a hint of sea salt that perfectly balances its sweet flavor. Another fan favorite is the Toast Yay!, a French toast-inspired cookie coated in a layer of icing whose shape and flavor pay tribute to the breakfast staple. Of course, you can never go wrong with classics such as Thin Mints, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Patties, peanut butter sandwiches, Lemonades, caramel chocolate chips, Girl Scout S’mores and Trefoils, which are shortbread cookies inspired by the original Girl Scouts recipe. Boxes can be purchased online or at local booths in participating locations across North Texas. Southlake storefronts include Kroger, Tom Thumb and Anthropologie in town square, Albertsons in Grapevine and Starwood Cafe and Tom Thumb in Trophy Club, among many others. Those iconic green booths we all know and love are serving up smiles from January through April, so stock up while you can!

Trophy Club Advocate Rescues, Rehomes And Reunites Animals

A

s a child, Susan Edstrom was allergic to cats. It goes without saying that she never expected to become an animal advocate. Yet when her home town of Trophy Club was in need of a program to rescue stray animals in 2012, Susan stepped up to create a robust foster network to support animals in need. With over a decade of advocacy and more than 90 dogs, cats and critters currently in their care, Susan continues to find forever families for pets as the founder and president of her nonprofit, Four Paws One Heart. MY ANIMAL ADVOCACY JOURNEY BEGAN WITH… the Humane Society of North Texas. One day, I was walking between buildings at my office, and I saw all of these animals in cages. The Humane Society brought these animals for employees to adopt, and I wanted to volunteer for future events. I just couldn’t resist those adorable faces. After getting more involved, I ended up managing the adoption alongside my colleagues. WHEN TROPHY CLUB MOVED TOWARD A… part-time animal control officer (ACO), we needed to find a solution to take care of animals outside of shelter hours. The ACO only worked four hours a day for four days a week, so it really came down to filling a need. I started dipping my toes into social media and created a Facebook page called Trophy Club Animals to post lost and found pets, help them get cared for and reunite them with their owners. IT ALL STARTED WITH… me and one other foster mom taking in two to three kittens at a time. Everybody knew me because they kept contacting me about stray animals they would find. Eventually, I decided to start my own 501c3, and in 2019, Four Paws One Heart was born. MY GOAL FOR THE FIRST YEAR WAS TO… rehome 75 animals. We got off to a strong start with six kittens getting adopted at our first event and our first foster mom taking in 11 kittens. When everything went virtual in 2020, so did we. I got together all of our fosters and told them everything would be online. We would host events and post bios, videos and pictures so people could ‘meet’ their future adoptions remotely. We still host those virtual meet-andgreets to this day.

AS WE CONTINUED RESCUING ANIMALS, I GOT… a scanner to help reunite owners with their lost pets in the field. If they have a microchip, I just scan the animal, call the number on their file and reconnect them with their family without ever having to take them to the shelter. I always advocate for people to microchip their animals, because you can’t lose a microchip. Just be sure your information is up to date. SINCE STARTING FOUR PAWS ONE HEART, OUR NETWORK HAS… grown to about 30 active fosters throughout the Metroplex, including in Trophy Club, Carrollton, Garland, McKinney, Keller, Fort Worth, Roanoke and Southlake. Last year was one of our biggest years yet with over 538 kittens, cats, puppies and dogs adopted. To date, we’ve adopted out, reunited and rehomed well over 700 animals throughout the Metroplex. WHEN WE TAKE IN MOTHERS AND THEIR LITTER, WE’LL USUALLY KEEP… the adults for much longer. Moms typically stay with us for six to nine months, whereas babies usually fly right out the door. I would love for people to rethink that. Just because they’re 1 to 2 years old doesn’t mean they’re not going to bond with your family. If you treat them well, they’re going to love you and be yours. I HOPE PEOPLE REALIZE THAT… everybody can do something. Whether you foster, volunteer or transport animals, every effort put in is very much needed and necessary. Even something as small as a post on social media helps us because you have access to an entire audience that we may not even know about. Find out what it is you’d like to do to help in whatever small way because small contributions make everything that much easier.
