fashion forward thinking

It wasn’t that long ago when we wrote about the future of robotics through the vision of Elad Inbar, the founder and CEO of Southlake-based RobotLAB. Now we’re thrilled to share the story of Meison, another locally-owned multimillion dollar business that is staring down its future, this time through the eye of a sewing needle.

Meison CEO Steven Wang and his brother Eric, the sons of the fashion house’s founders Eddie and Ming Wang, successfully moved operations from New York’s fashion district and settled in Grapevine nearly two decades ago. As many businesses were facing challenges in the post-pandemic landscape, so too was Meison who also witnessed how remote work was turning the fashion world upside down.

However, despite the adversity, Meison doubled down under Steven’s guidance and continues to expand— a happy occurrence if you consider the fact that the majority of family businesses struggle after a second generation takes over.

Anyone who lives in a tight-knit community such as ours invariably finds themselves rooting for the local mom-and-pop shop. This month is no different for our small family business as we celebrate Meison and others who make our lives better through auto purchases, landscaping and, of course, that slow-smoked brisket.

Through it all, what we find most enjoyable is sharing the diversity of business stories that continue to make Southlake’s story more colorful.

Yours in Southlake Style,

Mike

WEIGHT LOSS EXPERTS Q&A:

Ashley, Nutrition & Lifestyle

Q: How can I lose weight but still enjoy life?

A: Traditional diets are overly restrictive, so instead of trying to be all-or-nothing, find an appropriate balance between eating healthy and indulging in fun foods. The most effective weight loss comes from consistency, not perfection.

“If you want results that are permanent, then don’t start a marathon by sprinting.”

Preston, Sports Nutrition & Exercise Physiology

Q: What are the best workouts to lose weight?

A: Weight loss is driven by burning more calories and exercise simply enhances the ability to achieve that calorie deficit. Consistency in your workout routine is more important than the specific type of exercise you choose. So, whether it’s resistance training, pickleball or a group class, find what you enjoy and can do on a regular basis.

“Never do anything to lose the weight that you’re not willing to continue doing to keep it off.”

Angela, Nutrition & Psychology

Q: How do I stay motivated during my weight loss journey?

A: A successful weight loss journey not only focuses on food and exercise but also addresses the mental and emotional components associated with cravings, emotional eating and overall mindset.

“The mind and body are connected, so you must nourish them both.”

Dr. Bryce, Lead Practitioner

Q: What’s the truth about weight loss injections?

A: GLP-1 Injections have revolutionized weight loss with their promising results but they have also raised concern for negative gastrointestinal effects, losing muscle mass and rebound weight gain after treatment. The truth is, these injectables can be extremely helpful in any weight loss journey but they must be managed properly. Biweekly check-ins, customized dosing strategy and proper nutrition intake are necessary to ensure the injections are safe and effective.

“A crutch is only a crutch until the body heals and you can then walk on your own.”

Making The Market Work For You

Southlake Real Estate Agent Helps Navigate The Local Housing Market

What are the current real estate trends in the area?

The market slowed down after summer 2024, but it’s now on the upswing. More open houses are popping up and are packed with foot traffic. Buyers are back, mortgage applications are increasing. DFW has the #1 housing market in the country, fueled primarily by relocations. Inventory is still low, which means housing prices remain strong. However, as a buyer, you still have tools. You can ask for concessions, negotiate the price and negotiate repairs before closing.

What is the current housing inventory in Southlake?

In the fall of 2024, on average, the inventory was around 120 houses for sale. As of January 2025, the inventory had decreased to an average of about 40-50 houses.

Do you have tips on how I can get top dollar for my house? It involves a mix of strategy, smart investment and some good old-fashioned elbow grease. Curb appeal is key! First impressions matter, so be sure that your lawn is manicured, your driveway is clean and your house is freshly painted. Simple touches like flowers or a new mailbox can also make a big difference.

Remember that potential buyers want to imagine themselves living in your house. Consider removing personal photos and excessive decorations – maybe even renting a storage unit for extra furnishings. It's also important to fix anything that’s broken, like leaky faucets and cracked tiles, and consider minor upgrades that can offer a high return on investment like new countertops, updated light fixtures or a fresh coat of paint. I would also really recommend hiring professionals for photos and for home staging. Both are an investment that often pays off.

How can I most effectively market my house?

Work with a knowledgeable real estate agent who knows your local market well. They can help you price your home competitively, market it effectively and navigate negotiations. Timing can also make a big difference -- typically, spring and summer are the best times to sell a house. I can’t stress enough that you should make your house available for as many showings and open houses as possible. Flexibility can help attract more potential buyers.

The Southlake Carroll Cheer squad placed 12th at the University Interscholastic League 6A Division 1 state championships, held Jan 16-18 in Fort Worth. The Dragons finished with a score of 85.37. Carroll scored 44.03 points in crowd-leading chants and 41.33 in its performance of the band chant and fight song. Carroll scored an 89.90 in 2023-24, good enough for seventh. The Dragons placed eleventh in 2022-23 with a score of 80.97 on the heels of a second-place finish in 2021-22. Later in the month, the Dragons placed third at the NCA High School championships and were also awarded the Vocal Excellence Award.

VEHICLE CHARGERS COMING TO GRAPEVINE MILLS MALL

As electric and hybrid vehicles maintain popularity in Dallas-Fort Worth, more and more vehicle charging stations continue to pop up around the Metroplex. Already sporting a handful of chargers within city limits, three new stations were approved by the Grapevine City Council at the Jan. 21 public meeting. Currently, ten electric vehicle charging stations are located within Grapevine's city limits. The new stations will be located in parking spaces at Grapevine Mills Mall next to Meow Wolf, per city officials. They will be available 24 hours a day. Each station will be able to charge two vehicles at one time. A timeline for construction and installation has yet to be announced.

NUSR-ET STEAKHOUSE IN DALLAS PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Internet-famous restauranteur Nusret "Salt Bae" Gökçe announced that his Dallas restaurant, Nusr-Et Steakhouse, will close for good. It was initially announced that the restaurant, formerly located at 1900 Pearl Street in Downtown, would only be closed temporarily after Gökçe himself said a closure was needed due to a "maintenance issue." Per reports, a new Nusr-Et will open in Mexico City later this year. Gökçe’s Nusr-Et brand was awarded The Five Star Diamond Award in 2014 from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences. This was the first time a restaurant in Turkey was recognized internationally for such a high level of quality.

SOUTHLAKE TEEN WINS FIDDLE CHAMPIONSHIP

Southlake resident Thomas Paskvan, 17, won his second straight Fiddle Showdown at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Jan. 26, walking away with a $2,500 scholarship for his first year of college and free admission to a master class at the Texas Fiddle Clinic. Paskvan isn't the only fiddler in his family: his younger brother, Tristan, also plays. Tristan competed in the first-ever National Online Fiddle Contest back in 2020 and earned first place in his category. Both fiddlers are classically trained. Thomas Paskvan has been playing the fiddle since he was eight years old. He's currently a member of the Carroll High School varsity swim team and plays guitar in the Carroll Jazz Band.

CARROLL JAZZ BAND SELECTED TO PLAY AT PRESTIGIOUS NYC EVENT

The Carroll Jazz Band will be packing their bags and heading to New York City in May, as they were recently named a finalist for the seventh time at one of the most competitive jazz competitions in the nation. Every year, the Essentially Ellington Festival, currently in its 30th year, assembles jazz programs from around the country to participate in a weekend-long event. This year, Carroll Jazz was one of 30 bands from around the country to receive the distinction out of a record number of applicants and will be making the trip in May. Carroll's jazz program currently includes four All-State players among the 21 members, a nearly unheard-of feat. The group plays as a big band as well as in smaller ensembles like the "Blue Moon Quartet."

NEW PICKLEBALL COURTS OPEN UP IN TROPHY CLUB AND ROANOKE

Pickleball popularity has certainly not waned since the sport burst onto the scene five years ago, and area municipalities are working to stay in lockstep with public demand. Six new courts will be built in Trophy Club at Harmony Park after the town council approved a builders contract at a January meeting. The courts will be built behind the current tennis courts. Per the contract, the six courts will cost approximately $1.12 million. The Roanoke Recreation Center also opened pickleball to all skill levels on January 1, with beginner, intermediate and advanced players able to play in two-hour increments on Mondays and Wednesdays.

GRAPEVINE SETTLERS PARK OPENS NEW AMENITIES

Park-goers rejoice: Phase 1 of Grapevine's Settlers Park is complete. Visitors can now walk, jog, bike and hike on an updated concrete trail and walking path. New restrooms and a pavilion are now open to the public as well. While on the path, residents can get an up-close look at the spring-fed pond and the wildlife surrounding it. In all, Phase 1 cost the city around $3.3 million. Phase 2 of the park's makeover, which will include construction on remaining amenities within the park, is expected to cost around $4.5 million. A non-urban outdoor grant in the amount of $750,000 given by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission will go towards Phase 2, according to TPWC officials. Included in the Phase 2 construction will be upgrades to the fishing pier expansion and lighting along the trail.

TWO DRAGON WRESTLERS WIN CLASS 6A STATE TITLES

Dylan Ota and Keagan Sieracki accomplished something that no other Carroll Dragon wrestlers have ever done: two individual state championships in the same year. Ota, a junior, won his second consecutive state title last week in the 106-pound weight class. He was joined by fellow junior Sieracki, who won state in the 138-pound class. Luke Burgar placed fifth in the 150-pound class, as did Cora Hayes in the 132-pound class. Ota, Sieracki and Burgar all won their individual regional championships on Feb. 9 to advance to state. Carroll finished in fourth place overall in the UIL standings. In all, the Dragons came home with a team trophy, four total wrestlers who placed and two individual state championship trophies.

SOUTHLAKE RANKED SECOND BEST SUBURB IN THE COUNTRY

According to a new study released by Canadian real estate firm View Homes Team, Southlake is the second-best suburb to live in 2025. With an average of 233 sunny days per year, top-tier schools and a thriving housing market, Southlake beat the rest of the 600 contenders, falling just behind Vienna, Virginia. The study examined 12 key factors using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, including housing market conditions, employment rates, poverty, education levels, average commute time and crime. Southlake ranked highest in terms of median income and sunny days, and also had some of the highest rates of insured residents and those with at least a bachelor’s degree. Colleyville also made the list, coming in at no. 36. Other DFW suburbs to make the list are Grand Prairie at no. 37 and University Park at no. 49.

The restaurant will anchor a new six acre mixed-use development located at State Hwy. 114 and Kirkwood. Southlake Mayor Shawn McCaskill said on his Facebook page that the restaurant would be across the street from Varispace, cover 8,955 square feet and seat 248 people. There will also be outdoor seating

ANOTHER BROKEN EGG CLOSES

What was once deemed just a temporary closure is now permanent for Another Broken Egg Cafe. The Southlake eatery will not reopen, confirmed a restaurant spokesperson via telephone. "Permanently closed" is noted on the restaurant's website under hours of operation. The first Texas location, the Southlake branch offered fresh, Southern-inspired dishes as well as healthy and vegetarian items for brunch and lunch. The restaurant was also a finalist in the "Breakfast" category of Southlake Style's 2020 Reader's Choice awards. Another Broken Egg Cafe opened in Southlake in 2016. The locations in Dallas and The Colony are still open.

POPULAR REWARDS PROGRAM RETURNS TO SOUTHLAKE

After a successful debut in 2024, Southlake's Open Rewards program has returned. The program provides an opportunity for both DFW locals and visitors to explore the Southlake community while earning 5% cash back. “With just a quick download of the app, folks can effortlessly earn 5% cash back while supporting local Southlake businesses,” said Daniel Cortez, director of economic development and tourism. With over 200 retail stores and 170 restaurants accessible through the Open Rewards App, earning incentives while supporting local businesses is simple and easy. MEISON CEO STEVEN WANG USHERS A SECOND-GENERATION BUSINESS INTO THE FUTURE FROM GRAPEVINE HEADQUARTERS

PHOTOS COURTESY MEISON
Meison CEO Steven Wang and co-founder Ming Wang

Meison CEO and Westlake resident Steven Wang grew up watching his parents, Eddie and Ming Wang, build a business out of their two-bedroom apartment in Queens, New York, that they shared with another family. After emigrating from Taiwan and attending the Fashion Institute of Technology, the husband-and-wife team started a women’s apparel line, Ming Wang.

With Ming acting as the sole designer and Eddie promoting the business by going door-to-door to different stores on 7th Avenue, the two started producing knitwear products out of the apartment and slowly created a name for themselves in the industry. Steven looks back fondly remembering the hustle years of the late ’70s and early ’80s that established the current company, Meison: a group of brands valued at $45 million that will celebrate 39 years in business this year. Now, the company is forging into the future by embracing initiatives like influencer collaborations to celebrate its loyal customer base.

Meison, which moved its operations to Grapevine in 2006, furthered its investment in the local area by opening a lavish 15,000 square-foot showroom in Southlake in 2020. Operating out of passion for building upon his family’s legacy, successfully running a second-generation business and looking toward the future, Steven says Meison has always been an important part of life. His parents’ work even shaped some of his earliest memories.

“As early as the age of 3, this is all I remember them doing,” Steven says.

Eddie and Ming moved the family and the company to South Florida in 1986. Steven and his younger brother Eric spent their free time after school and over summers helping with Ming Wang. After graduating high school and studying accounting and finance at the University

of Michigan, Steven ventured on his own path. But in the early 2000s, Steven moved home and started to help out.

“One project led to another,” Steven explained. “I kept saying, ‘I will leave after this.’ But then I thought, ‘I think I can add value to the organization.’ That was 22 years ago, and here we are.”

Eddie and Ming said in a joint statement they felt fortunate Steven decided to join the business, but were cautious, knowing how challenging the work could be.

“He said he saw a bright future for the company and that being part of the business would allow him to stay closer to us as a family. That meant so much to us, and his enthusiasm and commitment gave us new confidence in the future of the business,” Eddie and Ming Wang said.

Steven never expected to hold the family business’ reins, but he's grateful to contribute to the legacy.

“I lucked into it,” Steven says. “I won the genetic lottery. My dad never pushed this on me, but I feel like it was always a dream of his for us to take on something they built.”

Steven’s brother Eric joined the business soon after, which Eddie and Ming said felt like a natural addition. Eric now acts as Meison’s president and director of administration.

“Seeing Steven’s passion and the progress he had made with the business helped inspire Eric to contribute as well. While their roles are different, knowing that both of our sons care about the family legacy and want to be part of it in their own ways is something we cherish deeply,” Eddie and Ming said.

BUILDING OUT THE BUSINESS

After Steven joined Meison, Eddie urged Steven to first learn how to sell the products, saying no one would

respect him if he couldn’t. So Steven moved back to New York and became a company salesperson.

After finding success in sales, Steven realized there were other business priorities that needed attention. His role organically evolved to include product development and design, marketing and new business ventures.

“Over the years, I started taking on more and more, and [my parents’] started taking on less and less,” Steven says. “On top of that, as the business evolved into new things, I became the subject matter expert on those new business aspects.”

Under Steven’s leadership, the company evolved from one singular brand, Ming Wang, found in boutiques and specialty stores to a collection of brands stocked in major department stores nationwide. The company also invested in e-commerce to service customers directly.

Over the years, Meison grew its portfolio of brands, all catering toward the same customer. There are currently five brands underneath Meison’s umbrella: Ming Wang, Misook, Masai Copenhagen, Kasper and Jones New York. Each brand has its own DNA — with Kasper offering occasion and career suit pieces while Jones New York features more businesscasual items — but they all cater toward the same customer.

It has a major airport. I think the local government is very supportive of businesses. Moving from South Florida to North Texas was game changing for us. I do not think we would be in the position we are in today if we did not make that move.”

Meison first moved into its current headquarters, warehouse and distribution center in Grapevine, an almost 50,000-square-foot location. After more than a decade of successful operations in North Texas, Meison took on its next real estate venture in 2020: a lux 15,000-square-foot showroom in Southlake where Meison engages with customers and hosts major market retailer appointments.

“ ” I come to work every day trying not to be the guy who ruined the business his parents started.
Steven Wang, Meison CEO

“We’ve always been focused on women as our main customer and have been more on the occasion side,” Steven says. “Our goal is to provide the most curated assortment of quality products. We try to make sure to sell products that, if a woman is trying to make an impression somewhere, we have products to help satisfy that.”

Through Meison’s growth, Steven has never lost sight of the responsibility behind running the family business.

“I come to work every day trying not to be the guy who ruined the business his parents started,” Steven shares. “That’s a lot of pressure. Granted, the current business is nothing like the business I walked into, but still – the odds are not in my favor. I work really hard to make sure I don’t ruin their legacy.”

Steven continued by referencing the disconcerting statistics behind second-generation businesses. In a 2021 article, The Harvard Business Journal referenced a commonly quoted study that states, “only a third of family businesses in this study made it through the second generation.”

Steven credits Eddie’s and Ming’s willingness to new ideas and openness to his and his brother’s leadership to a reason they have found continued success.

“They built this together side by side,” Steven says. “Both of them worked like crazy to get to this point. When you have an entrepreneurial mentality, a common thing that occurs is a lack of willingness to let go. So the credit has to go to both of them.”

COMING TO TEXAS

Alongside Eric, Steven took the next big leap and moved Meison to North Texas in 2006.

“We saw all the benefits of North Texas that everyone else in the country saw, but we just saw it in 2006,” Steven jokes. “It’s centrally located. It has great infrastructure.

“We offer experience-based retail. It’s less of a traditional retail space and more of a stylist showroom,” Steven explains. “It’s designed to be a full retail environment, but it can be done by appointment or invitation-only events.”

With the showroom investment and COVID-19 affecting how people dress, Steven admits 2020 hit the company hard.

“It was really rough.” Steven says. “We sell products for people to go see other people, and that’s the opposite of what was happening in 2020.”

This wasn’t the first time Meison experienced the ebbs and flows of running a small business, so the project continued and the storefront opened in December 2020. Now, the Southlake storefront hosts exclusive events, like the February 22nd kick-off party for the Ming Wang collaboration with Dallas-based content creator Tanya Foster.

Tanya, a fashion and travel influencer and blogger who has more than 116k Instagram followers, first worked with Meison in 2018 on a video Misook project. Tanya says the craftsmanship behind each garment stuck with her, so when the company approached her for this project years later, she says it was a quick yes and ended up being a “winwin.”

This collaboration marked the first time Meison partnered with an influencer to create a collection. The February event offered a tangible experience for Tanya’s followers and Meison customers to experience the garments.

“I want them to come in and get to touch and feel the product,” Meison Director of Retail Performance Katie Kittrell says.

Katie says after Meison decided to collaborate with local influencers, Tanya was a natural fit for this hands-on project.

“We really wanted to find someone who embodies the body and spirit of Ming Wang,” Katie says. “We are a very timeless, polished brand, and I thought Tanya was the perfect fit. She’s timeless, classic and polished.”

The collaboration kicked off in early 2024, when Tanya met the team in the Southlake studio. The team asked Tanya about her closet’s essentials, inquired what resonated with her audience and discussed upcoming trends. The group then went on a shopping discovery day, where they watched Tanya move through and interact with different items and ended up in Tanya’s closet discussing her go-to pieces.

“The discovery meeting is the most important part of the process,” Katie says. “It enables us and our design team to

CONTINUING THE FAMILY LEGACY

While Meison has a large footprint in the local community, Steven says North Texas customers are often surprised to learn the company is headquartered in Grapevine.

“There’s a lot of individuals out there, even in our local community, that we serve with our products that don’t know we are in their backyard,” Steven says. “When people visit both our facilities in Grapevine and Southlake, they are shocked, not only by how nice they are but by the overall community around us.”

The whole Wang family now calls themselves locals: Eddie and Ming live in Westlake, Steven lives in Westlake with his two daughters and Eric lives in Colleyville with his wife and three sons.

“Everyone is within 15 minutes of each other,” Steven says. “That’s one of the benefits of owning a small business – you get to choose where your office is and then you usually get to choose the areas you want to live in.”

tings where each piece was meticulously tweaked to meet everyone’s expectations. She even attended retailer meetings where she helped present and sell the collection into stores.

“I talked about where I would wear the different items,” Tanya says. “To watch the retailer place the order was so satisfying. I loved it. The brand was so phenomenal to work with; they trusted me to be myself.”

Katie says actively including Tanya provided an authenticity that comes through in the final product. The collection features 19 individual pieces including jackets, skirts, pants, a few blouses and suiting pieces, with most prices retailing for under $300 per item. Katie says Meison wanted to keep the pricing consistent with the rest of Ming Wang’s offerings so it felt like a natural extension of the brand.

“I curated a collection that works well with itself, but it was super important to me that it worked with what you already have. I feel like I stayed true to myself and what I like, and that’s going to resonate really well,” Tanya said. “I learned so much through this partnership and have a whole new appearaction for the business.”

Evolving from a two-bedroom Queens apartment to owning two Texas business facilities, Steven says he cannot believe how the business has grown into itself. Steven says Eddie and Ming’s primary focus was to put food on the table, and now the business has become a nationally recognized enterprise.

“We lived week by week, month by month, quarter by quarter,” Steven says. “The idea that they have an organization like this today… I don’t think they would have imagined it.”

In a joint statement, Eddie and Ming said, “We never imagined it would grow as much as it has, but our hope has always been to pass something meaningful to our children. With both Steven and Eric now involved in the business, it brings us great pride to see how it continues to evolve for the future.”

Looking toward the future, Steven stresses Meison will continue creating wardrobing solutions for women in career and occasion settings. He also suggests Meison strives to eventually have 8-12 brands within its portfolio.

“We would like to build a strong portfolio of brands that account for the variety of choices that our customers want,” Steven says. “Our job is to put the best iteration of each particular brand in a manner that’s understandable and simple for our customers to shop.”

LG’s New Transparent 77-Inch Television Is A Sight To Behold

If you’re the type to eschew spring vacation and stay home to binge watch the newest streaming true crime documentary, there’s a television currently on the market that puts all others to shame.

DETAILS

LG Signature OLED 77-inch TV

4K Picture and Smart technology

Price: $59,999 LG.com

Enter: The 77-inch OLED transparent television, the first of its kind, providing a jumbosized level of entertainment and encouraging homeowners all over the world to experience something that’s literally never been seen before.

Upon setup, two viewing options are available: full transparent viewing, or high-definition images portrayed on a black shade curtain, reverting the viewer back to a standard OLED television. The virtual-shade rises and lowers easily with the touch of a button. The transpar -

ent option for viewing is certainly eye-opening, but viewers can easily switch to a comfortable backdrop for more traditional television consumption.

In keeping with the clean, minimalist look, adding multiple devices to run on the television is a cord-free endeavor. All televisions come with LG’s Zero Connect Box, a wireless cord bay to connect gaming stations and other devices. The box can then transmit a 4K signal from up to 30 feet away to the television. Despite a rather high price, these televisions are still flying off the shelves – reminding us that little can get in the way of a group of Netflix-enthusiasts, and a room with a view is always in demand.

Family-Owned BUSINESSES Family-Owned BUSINESSES

When you work with your loved ones, family is at the heart of everything — especially when it comes to business. Not only have these family-owned businesses stood the test of time, but they’ve also done it while staying true to their roots.

FEEDSTORE BBQ

For almost 25 years, FeedStore BBQ has been serving up more than just incredible barbecue—it’s been serving up a sense of community, family and tradition. Founded in 2001 by Papa Bill and Phyllis “Mema” Lafavers, FeedStore BBQ holds the distinction of being Southlake’s oldest continuously operated retail site.

The Lafavers family has been at the heart of the business since day one. Managed by Mike Lafavers, with the support of his son, West Texas, and daughter Kamy, AKA Princess, along with his nephew Cameron, FeedStore BBQ is a true family affair. But the family’s dedication doesn’t stop at the restaurant.

FeedStore BBQ has become a staple of the Southlake community, catering events, fundraisers, and Dragon football games and supporting countless local organizations. When you visit FeedStore BBQ, you’re not just enjoying a meal—you’re experiencing the pride and passion of a familyowned business that’s been bringing people together for over two decades.

CLASSIC KIA OF CARROLLTON

As a family-owned business and parents to three Southlake Carroll graduates, Jesse and Kathy Hull take great pride in providing exceptional customer service at Classic Kia of Carrollton. Thanks to their loyal customers in and around Southlake, the Hull family won Kia’s Presidents Club Award for the second consecutive year in 2023. With only 50 winners in the entire country, this award means more than any other to the Hull family.

Since purchasing the dealership in 2020, the Hulls have been overwhelmed by the community support that enabled them to set consecutive all-time sales records for the past three years. Kia has exploded in popularity in recent years, and now is your best chance to come and test drive one for yourself. So come on down and take the short 15-minute drive to the dealership — you won’t regret experiencing the classic difference at Classic Kia of Carrolton.

Behind The Smoke And Mirrors With Magician Zak Mirz

Grapevine High School alum Zak Mirz is no stranger to secrets. In his field, that’s a very good thing. For over 15 years, this first-generation American has been enchanting audiences around the world with his indelible talent for sleight of hand, together with a flair for storytelling. After tragically losing his father when he was just one year old, Zak eventually sought comfort in an unexpected place - magic. These days, Zak’s career is on an upward trajectory. Not only has he acted as an advisor on David Blaine’s series “The Magic Way,” he left Penn and Teller spellbound on “Penn & Teller: Fool Us!” and launched his first special “Ticket for One,” which is streaming on YouTube. His current tour, “Flashes of Magic,” is heavily inspired by what he considers his most magical creation to date – his 2-year-old daughter.

MY UNCLE FOUND A MAGIC SHOP… in the Yellow Pages. He took me [there], and I met this magician who helped me navigate through the books and theory. Because the temptation is just to buy magic tricks rather than understanding the theory and the foundation and why the tricks work.

WHAT I LOVE IS… storytelling. I found that what I love to do and what I'm really good at is telling stories to people. So everything I create and everything I perform is through the lens of a story.

WHEN I GRADUATED… from Grapevine in 2010, I packed my bag and started hitting the road. I went to a small town in Minnesota [to perform a show], and it was there that I met my wife. She was helping us with merchandise, and by the end of the night, in my head, I was like, I would love for her to be my wife.

I COULD HONESTLY SAY THAT I’VE MET… all my mentors and heroes in my life because magic is a very small circle. I got to work with David Blaine on his special in 2020, so I got to learn under this guy that I idolized as well. It was the most amazing experience in my life -- to see how he works, how he talks to people, how he interacts, how he sees magic.

DAVID BLAINE TAUGHT ME SOMETHING I’LL ALWAYS REMEMBER… Basically, he asks himself, “Would I do it for $1,” and if the answer is yes, he'll do it for whatever amount of money on the table. But if the answer is no, even if someone

throws a million dollars at him, he's going to say no. And that's how I approach my art form now.

FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO GET STARTED IN PERFORMING ARTS… the best advice is do the same thing that great athletes do. They rehearse, they practice, they play and then they watch film… It’s brutal, but the only way you can get good is from seeing yourself through that lens and then making small adjustments.

WHEN I’M WORKING ON NEW IDEAS FOR MY SHOW… out of 100 ideas, I might come up with one or two that are amazing. Then I try to figure out what the music is, what the script is. Then I might go to open mic night and try it out at an improv or a two-minute [set]. I'll listen to how the audience reacts. I’ll see how they engage with a trick. If I feel like all those things are in place, it might have bones to actually go on my show.

A LOT OF MY MATERIAL NOW IS INSPIRED BY… the playfulness and youthfulness of my twoyear-old daughter. Even doing magic tricks with letter blocks that I would have never considered before, because it's all magical to her.

ONE OF THE MOST INSPIRING THINGS… my daughter has shown me is that magic still exists. We just have to find it… My new show is a reminder that the greatest magic trick you could ever give to yourself is seeing the world through the lens of a child.

Chumley House Charms Cowtown

uro Hospitality partners Benji Homsey and Chaz Martin have always wanted to open a restaurant in Fort Worth.

And why wouldn’t they? The western half of the Metroplex has quietly – or maybe not so quietly, depending on where you live – become a hub for quality food and drink.

Homsey is a Texas Christian University graduate, and Martin’s family lives in the city. So even when the two lived and worked elsewhere, the North Texas city – now riddled with popular res

taurants – was still in the back of their minds.

“The city has always been near and dear to our hearts,” Homsey said. “And there’s a lot of really cool things happening in the Fort Worth culinary community right now. We knew we wanted to be a part of it.”

Enter The Chumley House, Duro Hospitality’s newest restaurant in Cowtown – a 3,500 square foot European-inspired steakhouse with a British influence to the menu, Homsey said, and architecture that lends itself to an Old World-inspired atmosphere.

Homsey and his team were realistic: they knew trying to upend the popular Fort Worth choices of Tex-Mex, Bar-B-Q, seafood and classic steak-and-baked potato eateries was a tall, nearly impossible task. That’s why the menu at The Chumley House emphasizes the quality cuts of steak available – while also offering other non-traditional, European dishes to go along with favorites like pasta, seafood and wine.

“We started thinking that Fort Worth needed another top-end steakhouse, but our goal wasn’t necessarily to compete with those established restaurants,” Homsey said. “We wanted to offer a culinary experience where people could still get their steak, but also unique appetizers or some really great pasta, too. We wanted to give people something different. I think people will really enjoy our menu.”

At The Chumley House, patrons can order the same classic steaks that are available throughout Fort Worth – filet, New York Strip and bone-in ribeye, to name a few – but can also enjoy other British and globally-inspired dishes like scones and tea; a butter chicken pie with ginger yogurt; a Hilbut Porterhouse with chimichurri; a side of Herb Popovers with salted butter; and for dessert, a salted caramel biscoff trifle or blackberry cobbler crumble and Mimi’s Icebox Pie. Customers can also order from a wine list featuring domestic selections from Napa, along with Bordeaux and Burgundy vintages from France.

The space itself features study-style rooms with dark, mahogany walls and a fireplace. One room, the Trellis Room, features what restaurant officials call “dramatic architectural elements” that mimic a classic British manor – all in place to give patrons a cozy yet upscale experience.

There’s a full bar in the main dining room for customers to sit at while waiting for a table or just enjoying a drink, along with intimate and family-size booths and side-by-side table seating. In all, the restaurant gives off an aura that is inviting, yet important.

“Our dedication to research and exploration led us to the most exciting concept we felt would thrive in this incredible city,” Homsey said. “When we conceptualize a menu and a restaurant, we consider two things. One, what do we like? Because we’re consumers, too. Is this a place we would want to eat at?

“And two, how can we create a fun and soulful place for people to go to? People go out to eat to have a good meal, but having fun is really important, too. If you’re not having fun, you’re not going to go back.” Photos by Manny Rodriguez

Take A Pull

At Grapevine’s Hoppin,’ You Can BYOB (Be Your Own Bartender)

The newest craze in bar-hopping is now on tap in Grapevine.

Hoppin,’ located off Grapevine Mills Parkway, pres ents to patrons a pour-your-own-beer tap wall that has become increasingly popular across the country.

The bar boasts more than 40 taps from which to choose – including 34 beers, ciders and seltzers –and four cocktails, four wines and two THC seltzers. Plenty of locally-made beers are on tap, including the Civility Manners Decorum sour beer from Bedford, Miracle Wheat from Grapevine and the Fenris Park wheat beer from North Richland Hills. A few national names appear on the tap wall too, like Colorado’s Bamm Bamm Rubble Rubble sour beer and the Wild Herd beer from Chicago’s Goose Island Beer Co.

Upon arrival, beer lovers receive a wrist band with an embedded electronic scanner, which acts as a tracker for the drinks you enjoy throughout the night. You’re charged by the ounce, so pour as little - or as much - as you like. When it’s time to go, Hoppin’ charges the credit card attached to the wristband.

“There’a a real seamlessness to what we do,” coowner Blake Martin said. “The most time you’ll ever spend with an employee or a server is 30 seconds just to check in. We give you your wristband, you give us a credit card to scan, and you’re off to the races.”

Hoppin’ can seat up to 80 people inside and another 50 on the outdoor patio, which Martin said is warmed with space heaters during the winter months. A cornhole area is adjacent to the patio.

There’s also a full kitchen, but the pour-your-own beverage is the main attraction, as Hoppin’ fully embraces the new fad popping up at bars all over the country. Besides not needing to summon a server to get a drink, customers can sample small amounts of different beverages before committing to a full glass.

There’s also the lure of getting to pour your own drink at a bar, Martin said. And with prices determined by ounces poured – most beers cost between $0.35 and $0.50 per ounce – it can make for a very affordable good time.

“We were so excited to bring this concept to Grapevine,” he said. “It was a real no-brainer. People love pouring their own drinks.” Food photo Courtesy of Hoppin'

Living close to the city has its pros and cons. What you give up in space and privacy is returned in proximity to arts and entertainment. For those who are looking to have it all in an exquisite ranch setting, they need to look no further than Willow Wood Horse Farm. From its 10-acre wooded lot approaching Lake Grapevine, the three-bedroom, four-bath custom-built ranch boasts both sweeping views and short commutes. Recently built in 2022, and currently listed at $7,200,000 this elegant equestrian property comes complete with luxury finishes ideal for today’s modern cowboys.

EXQUISITE YET EFFICIENT DESIGN

This fine example of sustainable architectural design is constructed primarily of insulated concrete form supported by a network of steel joists. Its many glass walls and windows not only offer amazing views, they also provide superior thermal insulation, which keeps the property’s GeoThermal heating and cooling system at its most efficient. The entire 4,353 square-foot home can be sustainably powered by either its Kohler water-cooled, natural gas generator or its array of solar panels atop the three car garage, hidden to the eye, but not the sun.

OPULENT OBSERVATORY

One doesn't choose to live on such a property without taking full advantage of its scenery. Beyond the glass walls and open-concept living lie bucolic views of the property from both the living room and the primary bedroom. However, a trip up the metal and glass framed spiral staircase to the second story glass encased observatory offers the ultimate views overlooking the many grazing and training pastures, a pond and a barn with six 12 x 12 stalls.

WATERS FEATURED

If the lake views aren’t enough, the design team has included two additional features for water lovers to enjoy. In the front of the home, visitors are greeted by a thoughtfully incorporated koi pond that extends beyond both sides of the main entry. And in the back, lies an-immense 3,000 square-foot patio that surrounds an 80-foot long salt water swimming pool, perfect for relaxing or competitive laps.

Deep In The Heart Of Texas

SXSW Is The Perfect Excuse To Revisit Austin

Known for its eclectic spirit, Austin has been a magnet for artists, foodies, outdoor enthusiasts and tech titans alike for decades.

There's a good reason for that -- this truly is a city with something for everyone. Whether you’re exploring the bustling downtown filled with eclectic shops and lively music venues, savoring some of the best barbecue and Tex-Mex around or enjoying the picturesque landscapes of the Town Lake or the nearby Hill Country, Austin promises an unforgettable experience that showcases the heart and soul of Texas.

While any time is perfect to experience Austin, mid-March couldn’t be better. The warm spring arrives along with South by Southwest (SXSW), one of the most coveted music, film and tech festivals in the

world. Relax and rejuvenate surrounded by the city’s abundant nature or dive headfirst into the fevered energy of the festival. Either way, you’re in for a treat.

South by Southwest (SXSW)

For nine days every March, Austin becomes the epicenter of the cultural universe when it hosts South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference & Festivals. During the event, which happens this year from March 7-15, musicians, filmmakers, comedians, tech entrepreneurs, policymakers, students, industry leaders and a slew of celebrities from around the world descend upon the city. Attendees take advantage of film and show premieres, musical performances and interactive conferences led by top experts on topics ranging from film, AI and climate to health, civic engagement and new tech.

With a lineup guaranteed to impress, highlights of this iteration are sure to include the star-studded world premieres of Seth Rogan’s new series “The Studio,” Jenna Ortega’s new comedy “Death of a Unicorn” and Nicole Kidman’s latest thriller, “Holland,” as well as keynote speakers like IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, Grammy-winning musician John Fogerty and Dr. Chelsea Clinton. Catching a set by one the 2,000 performers, like up-and-coming hip hop star Samara Cyn or Japanese musical legend Shiho Yabuki, is also sure to earn you “cool” points.

While a wristband is requisite if there are specific events you want to attend – definitely for any of the events mentioned above – one of the great things about SXSW is that if you are willing to go with the flow and see where the day can take you, there are plenty of free and even family-friendly options. Especially if you’re willing to get in line early.

Where to stay

While Austin has no shortage of incredible hotels, there are some that stand out. Built for the spirited adventurer, the 193-room tommie Austin is a new urban hotel experience that hums with youthful energy and draws inspiration from the colors, materials and sensations of its West Texas surroundings. The adjoined luxury contemporary Thompson Austin stuns with its clean, modern design and incredible restaurants. However, the rooftop infinity pool with its vista of the city will make this an unforgettable stay.

For a quintessentially “Austin” visit, the ivy-covered Hotel San José is the place to be. Especially if you can manage to grab one of their simple, but perennially in-demand rooms during SXSW, when the hotel has well-earned a reputation as the host of some of the most legendary courtyard concerts. No matter when you go, its prime location on South Congress Avenue in the midst of some of the city’s best vintage shopping, music and dining is unbeatable.

Where To Eat

From dive bar to Michelin-star, Austin is paradise for foodies. When the Michelin Guide swept into Texas in late 2024, there was no city more lauded than this one. Receiv ing seven one-star accolades, 15 Bib Gourmands and 23 recommended eateries, it’s safe to say that the bar is set high when it comes to food. If you want to try the best of the best, the unassuming Barley Swine stands out as a new Texan restaurant, celebrated for its innovative use of local ingredients.

Craft Omakase offers an intimate dining experience where patrons can indulge in a meticulously curated 22-course omakase selection. The live-fire cooking at Hestia elevates traditional dishes with unique flavor profiles, mak ing it a must-visit for food enthusiasts, and for those crav ing Southern cuisine, Olamaie, provides a refined take on beloved classics. Barbecue lovers are well catered to with award-winning establishments like Interstellar BBQ, La Barbecue and LeRoy & Lewis Barbecue, each renowned for their exceptional smoky meats and mouthwatering sides.
