The Mijas Town Hall is moving forward with the internal organisation of its administrative processes to streamline financial and budgetary management and improve essential services for citizens, such as payments to suppliers. According to the executive, this objective will be achieved thanks to the Town Hall’s Budget and Accounting Management Body, headed by Cristina Martínez Santiago, a local government official with national accreditation. This body is established in accordance with the Law on Large Population Municipalities, a category to which Mijas has belonged since 2012.

Town Hall

The Mijas Town Hall is moving forward with the internal organisation of its administrative processes in order to streamline financial and budgetary management and improve basic services for citizens, such as payments to suppliers. The government team thus aims to improve administrative procedures with a view to “achieving faster and more efficient administration”.

This will be possible, according to the executive, thanks to the launch of the Mijas Town Hall’s Budget and Accounting Management Body, which will be headed by the nationally accredited Local Administration officer Cristina Martínez Santiago. The new head took office on Tuesday 30th of September at the Town Hall, where she was welcomed by the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP).

Mata stressed

her administration’s commitment to the administrative regularisation of the obligations under the Law on Large Population Municipalities

The mayoress stressed that the appointment of the new head is “essential for the Mijas Town Hall”, as she will be responsible for streamlining all budgetary processes, “in line with this government team’s policy of strengthening the management and improving services for taxpayer”.

Administrative standardisation

The Budget and Accounting Management Body is an entity provided for under the Law on Large Population Municipalities, which had not yet been implemented in Mijas despite the municipality having acquired this designation in September 2012. The measure was already

The Budget and Accounting Management Body is “essential for the Mijas Town Hall”, as IT WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR STREAMLINING ALL BUDGETARY PROCESSES, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP). It will also oversee the management and organisation of the council’s financial matters, such as fees, public charges and fines.

First tasks

In addition to managing and organising the council’s accounting for all financial matters, the new body is already working on the design of the preliminary

the requirements of the Law on Large Population Municipalities. “Mijas has been classified as a large population municipality since 2012 and, therefore, must meet certain requirements that ensure the provision of quality services to citizens, particularly regarding transparency and accounting”, said the mayoress of Mijas.

Mata explained that a qualified public servant has been appointed to head this new body and will be responsible for managing and organising the council’s accounting for all financial matter, such as taxes, public charges and

fines. “We are putting our management in order to be worthy of our municipality”, said the mayoress, who described the creation of this body as “an urgent necessity for the municipality” and a key step in ensuring that the administration meets the standards of a municipality like Mijas and that all residents, regardless of where they live, receive the same high-quality services.

Streamlining payments to suppliers and managing municipal budgets are among the tasks that this new body is already undertaking.

procedures for processing the draft Municipal Budget for the 2026 financial year, with the aim of bringing greater “coherence” to management, said Mata. Another of its priority objectives will be to reduce the average payment period to suppliers, which Mata acknowledged remains lenghtly. “One of our priorities is to ensure that the suppliers who meet our needs are paid on time and in full”, said the mayoress, linking past delays to a lack of staff and an inadequate administrative structure, an issue that is now beginning to be addressed.

From Friday 26th to Sunday 28th, La Cala de Mijas Boulevard became a showcase for producers from Malaga with a new event of the seventh edition of the Sabor a Málaga Fair, which stopped off in the coastal district after visiting other towns in the province. The results were more than positive, with a large turnout and a turnover of 120,000 euros. What’s more, according to the organisers, Mijas is the second fair in terms of turnover for Sabor a Málaga, surpassed only by the one held in Rincón de la Victoria.

This was also the fourth time that the event has been held in the municipality and the second time in a row after last year’s event in Mijas Pueblo. The organisers highlighted another important aspect, the visibility given to 350 artisanal products from 36 companies from Málaga representing 20 different municipalities, in addition to the businesses in La Cala itself.

36 companies from 20 different municipalities showcased up to 350 artisanal products at the food fair

Mata (PP), who praised the success of the event on the boulevard, emphasised the significant economic impact generated by this event organised by the Provincial Council in collaboration with the Town Hall: “It has represented an economic impact of 120,000 euros for those producers who have the opportunity to showcase the products they make with great care and delicacy, while also maintaining the tradition of recipes handed down from great-grandmothers, some

presented in a modernised way, others kept with the original secret and naturalness that characterises these products”. The fair featured stalls selling oils, sweets, wines, cheeses, honey, cured meats, pickles... In fact, the event was so successful that “several

producers ran out of stock to sell on Sunday”, according to municipal sources. “One producer alone sold 1,200 “molletes” (a type of bread) stuffed with Malaga cured meats, which is a remarkable figure”, noted Mata.

The mayoress of Mijas also highlighted the boost the food fair gave to commercial activity in the area: “The restaurants along the rest of La Cala Boulevard also benefited from the people who came to shop and took the opportunity to have a beer and even stay for lunch”, she said.

Revitalising the economy

The mayoress had already predicted the success of the fair on Sunday 28th, as did the director

of the Sabor a Málaga brand, Leonor García-Agua, who, like the mayoress, attended the fair every day. “Everywhere we go, not only in Málaga and Andalusia, but also nationwide, Sabor a Málaga demonstrates that it is a recognised brand, known for quality and, above all, for the great variety of products our land produces; it is always a public success”, said García-Agua. “It has been wonderful to see people strolling, shopping and discovering the gastronomy from other towns in Málaga, which we need to promote and make known”, said the councillor for Public Roads, Melisa Ceballos (PP), who also attended the Sabor a Málaga Fair every day.

From Friday 26th to Sunday 28th, La Cala de Mijas LAID OUT ITS TABLECLOTHS TO SHOWCASE THE PROVINCE’S DELICACIES. The Provincial Council and the Town Hall highlighted the opportunity the fair provides for producers in Málaga.

Music and dance also had their place at this fair, with a large presence of groups and soloists from Mijas, many of them from the UP or trained there, such as pianists María Victoria Maldonado and Iván Santiandreu, who performed on Saturday. In addition to them, there were dance groups from the UP led by Remedios Leiva and Víctor Rojas, as well as from the Expresión academy, musician Jesús Miguel Navas, the group Meraki Flamenco Fusión and Mami Curl.

The event also featured workshops and tastings, which attendees enjoyed while learning and cooking, and which entrepreneurs used to showcase their products. “Producers are selling a lot, and, as I always say, not only at the fair but also afterwards, because here they promote their products both at their stalls and in the workshops and tastings held on stage”, said the technical director and gastronomic advisor of Sabor a Málaga, Ignacio Carmona

“We had to be in Mijas because all the producers from the province of Málaga want to go to places where their effort, producing more to sell at the Sabor a Málaga Fair, is rewarded. Here, all that effort pays off”, highlighted the president of the Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, at the inauguration. At this fair, “producers from the various municipalities in the province have a showcase to sell products that are made, in many cases, artisanally, organically and with full guarantees. Some of these products are even generating significant international attention”, added the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP).

presented their specialities

Four local establishments participated in the Sabor a Málaga Fair. Chefs Domi González from Seixis; Salvio Cantón from La Catedral, and Guadalupe Rodríguez from El Panal de la Reina, held showcookings, while Miguel Escalona took part with a stall for his brand, Mesura, which “offers three products: one called Mesura; another, the banoffee cream, made with banana and toffee; and ON, which is orange with a hint of wood. We also do wine-based cocktails and one very unique to us: the Málaga mojito,” explained Escalona. From El Panal de la Reina, Rodríguez created a delicious dish with figs, blue cheese, honey and pollen. González prepared one of his traditional cheesecakes, presented in individual small cakes, although they also sell full-size cakes, offering “a wide variety of flavours”. Finally,

from La Catedral, chef Miguel Ángel Almendral explained that they prepared “two types of sushi that are very popular in the restaurant, a Málaga salchichón tartare, a tuna tataki, and cod cooked at low temperature with pil pil foam and guacamole”. The owner of La Catedral, Salvio Cantón, highlighted “the visibility this fair gives to all restaurateurs and people working in gastronomy”. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), thanked all participants for their contribution to the event.

A MESSAGE IN a bottle In case of emergency

The Lions Club and the Foreigners Department launch this campaign aimed at saving lives

M. J. Gómez / Translation: C.Arroyo

Use in case of emergency: this is the aim of the campaign presented on Tuesday 30th of September by the Lions Club of La Cala and the Mijas Foreigners Department. It is an initiative that already has 5 million users in the United Kingdom. Called ‘Message in a Bottle’, its aim is to help save lives. “The idea is that if someone falls ill, especially those who live alone and need help but have difficulty communicating, emergency services (firefighters, police, medical staff, etc.) arriving at their home can have information to know what medical issue they may have”, explained the former international director of the Lions Club, Luis Domínguez

The system is very simple: fill in a form with your medical history and place it in a sealed

bottle, then keep it in the fridge so that when emergency services arrive, they can act more quickly and have this vital information at hand. Why in the fridge? “Because everyone usually has a fridge at home”, explained Domíguez.

And you may be wondering, how do emergency services know that the bottle is in the fridge?

“It’s simple: a sticker from this project is placed on the front of the house, on the door. So when emergency services arrive, they will already know that there is a

bottle with a message inside the fridge,” added the Lions Club representative

Goal: saving lives

The councillor responsible for the Foreigners Department, Mario Bravo (PP), said that “this gives people peace of mind. Many live alone or do not speak the language, making it very difficult to explain their situation. That is why the Mijas Town Hall supports this initiative, and we want to congratulate the Lions Club of La Cala for introducing it in Mijas”.

The Lions Club makes this kit available to all residents and encourages people to join the programme. “As you know, the Lions Club runs three shops where anyone interested can go for more information and, if applicable, obtain a bottle”, explained Bravo.

An art academy is reopening in Paiporta with the support of Soroptimist

Ed. Dept. Eleven months after the devastating floods caused by the DANA, Carol García’s Art Academy in Paiporta (Valencia) has reopened its doors thanks to the support of the ‘Soroptimist by your side’ project. Members of Soroptimist International Costa del Sol visited the renovated premises this weekend, an example of resilience that already has a new ceramic kiln for its classes and community projects. The initiative has offered direct financial support without bureaucracy to the women affected to help them rebuild their businesses.

During the visit, the members also formalised a new collaboration with Malaga-based master ceramist José Ángel Ruiz González, who will give a masterclass at the academy. Aura Roderick, from Soroptimist, emphasised that the credit goes to “extraordinary women” like Carol, whose “resilience, gratitude and determination” are an inspiration.

They noted that municipal projects such as the Los Santos car park in Las Lagunas, the replacement of water distribution networks in neighbourhoods such as El Coto and Doña Pilar, and, among others, the municipal indoor swimming pool in La Cala, the refurbishment of the Molino de Viento car park and the La Cala Coastal Path have benefited from this type of financial transfer.

I know that the president of the Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, is managing the Diputación, which belongs to all the people of Malaga, very effectively, and that is why this distribution must also reward municipalities like Mijas”. Mijas launches an awareness campaign on scooter use

The initiative focuses on informing users of these vehicles and promoting safer, more responsible mobility in the municipality

On Wednesday 2nd, the Mijas Local Police presented its new campaign on electric scooter use, promoted by the Mijas Town Hall through the Public Safety Department with the aim of informing and raising awareness of current regulations on personal mobility vehicles to improve road safety. The campaign will be implemented in different phases, with the first phase focusing on providing information.

In response to the increase in scooter use, the Mijas Town

Hall initially approved the Municipal Traffic and Circulation Ordinance at its plenary session in July 2024, which was finally ratified in April this year with the aim of ensuring public safety. Following its publication in the Official Gazette of the Province this past summer, this campaign is now being launched. “With this campaign, we are seeking

more than just compliance with the regulations. Our goal is to work together to create a much safer and more responsible public space, where pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and scooter users can coexist without risk”, explained the Councillor for Local Police, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox).

Regulations and penalties

The ordinance does include penalties, which will be applied at a later stage. Minor offences include riding without a bell, wearing headphones, or riding without adequate lighting. More serious violations include riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The penalty system provides fines ranging from 50 euros to 500 euros for serious cases.

The regulations also include other obligations. The councillor highlighted that “many people do not know that the minimum age for riding a scooter is 15, that riding on pavements and in pedestrian areas is prohibited, and that traffic rules must be respected. Riders should not wear headphones and must not exceed the maximum speed of 25 km/h”.

Finally, they emphasised the importance of being aware of the risks posed by these vehicles, which have already caused accidents. They also pointed out that “some of the recommendations we are making, such as helmet use by adults, are not yet mandatory. However, the Directorate General of Traffic plans to make them mandatory soon, and in Mijas, we want to get ahead of the curve with this awareness-raising campaign”.

St. Michael and Calahonda,

On the 29th of September, many municipalities celebrated the feast of the archangels Saint Michael, Saint Raphael and Saint Gabriel. Mijas marked the occasion on Sunday the 28th in Calahonda, with the traditional mass, followed by a procession of the small statue of Saint Michael around the church and a charity lunch, with proceeds going to Cáritas.

How could one not celebrate Saint Michael in Calahonda, when the archangel gives his name to the church and is venerated by the community? Once again, in keeping with tradition and faith, this area of Mijas paid tribute to the saint, who has a strong presence in the Bible and is full of symbolism, being considered the “companion on the journey, walking with believers”, as described by the new parish priest of La Cala, Fernando Luque, whose priesthood has not yet reached a month in Mijas: “Saint Michael is one of the archangels who, at various moments in the Bible, ppears as the angel who is always close to God, in God’s presence, and who, at specific points in the history of the Bible, accompanies people in their search, in their journey towards God,” the priest highlighted.

Once again, the feast welcomed

many residents, most of them foreigners or from other parts of Spain who once chose Calahonda for their holidays and ended up staying to live and share in the community. Like Ruth Holgado, a woman from Cadiz who has been living in the urbanisation for 20 years, who said that “the fact that we come together for the feast means that, with the people we share a common belief with, and share the Eucharist, we can also spend time outside the church to get to know each other better, to build community, and ask the person sitting next to you how their life is going”.

Another neighbour, Cristina Guzmán, from Madrid, who mo-

ved to Calahonda 35 years ago, emphasised that this celebration “is a way to pay homage to St. Michael and also to bring together people of different nationalities ”.

Charity celebration

After the Holy Mass and the procession of the archangel’s statue around the church, a lunch was held, turning the day into a charity event, as the funds raised will go to Caritas. This charitable aspect was highlighted by the spokesperson for the PP at the Mijas Town Hall, Mario Bravo, who said that “with so many needs and few funds avai-

lable, it is good for all of us to do our bit. For this reason, I would like to thank both the parish of Saint Michael and all the residents of Calahonda for their presence and support in these events”.

For other councillors attending, the feast also holds a deeply personal significance, as they feel a strong connection to Calahonda. This was expressed by the spokesperson for Vox at the Town Hall, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson, who pointed out that “what St. Michael the Archangel represents to me is important, as is what this church represents, which the Ur-

family and my family, including my father, helped to build, where I got married; and these pine trees, alongside which I spent my youth playing”.

For the spokesperson for the PSOE, Roy Pérez, “it really is a special day, especially for people like me, who have lived many years here in Calahonda and who come here year after year to maintain the tradition alongside all the residents”.

Just like the saint, these residents are also there to accompany and guide everyone who continues to choose Calahonda as their home.

Following the success of previous editions, the Las Lagunas Tapas Route returns this autumn. This initiative has been launched by the Commerce Department of the Mijas Town Hall in collaboration with the Federation of Associations from Mijas (FAM). The event will let the public sample the culinary offerings of nine establishments in Las Lagunas through elaborate tapas and desserts. This initiative will run from the 18th of October to the 29th of November, every day during the

opening hours of each establishment.

To announce it, on Thursday 2nd of October, Bar Gaby hosted the presentation and tasting of the tapas featured on the route. “This edition follows in the footsteps of previous ones. We would like to thank the FAM for its helping revitalise the town centre through this initiative, giving our shopkeepers and restaurateurs the opportunity to showcase their businesses and allowing residents and visitors to enjoy our cuisine and restaurants”, said the councillor for the area, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP).

For her part, the president of the Federation of Associations from Mijas, Rosario Cortes, explained that “it’s a slightly quieter time of year for businesses, so this is a way to give them a boost during these weeks and, at the same time, liven up Las Lagunas”. As every year, residents and visitors taking part will receive a tapaporte (tapas passport) which they must stamp each time they try a tapa. Once full, it should be handed in at the library of the Manuel España Theatre. Each tapa costs 3.50 euros and includes a small beer, a glass of house wine, water or a soft drink.
