Local Police Day

A blue-distinction medal was awarded, along with 29 white-distinction medals and more than a dozen commendations

The events in honour of the Local Police’s patron saint, San Miguel, whose feast day is celebrated on the 29th of September, took place on Thursday 30th of October in Mijas. They began with a thanksgiving Mass and continued with a ceremony at the Manuel España Theatre in Las Lagunas. Attendees included members of the force and their families, as well as the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), the councillor responsible for the area, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson (Vox), members of the municipal corporation, the chief inspector of the Local Police, Juan Manuel Rosas; senior officers, including the captain of the Civil Guard in Mijas, Miguel Ángel Fernández, the commander of the Civil Guard in Marbella, Francisco Javier Gómez, the chief commissioner of the National Police in Fuengirola, Juan Cabas, as well as representatives from the Mijas Fire Brigade, Civil Protection and the local police forces of neighbouring municipalities, in addition to representatives of associations and social groups.

Mata highlighted the “closeness and approachability” of the Mijas Local Police, as well as the “enormous trust” they inspire among citizens. “They are always there, in good times and, of course, in difficult moments”. She also praised the training, vocation, professionalism, specialisation, psychology and improvement of technical resources as the defining features of the Mijas Local Police, expressing her deep gratitude for their public service.

Cuevas Dawson offcially opened the event, thanking the officers for their dedication and highlighting the commitment of the Department of Security and the government team

to strengthening the force. He noted that “there was much to do. Accumulated shortcomings urgently needed to be corrected, and we have done so through the largest investment in recent years, a 200% increase, because we believe in this Police”.

The chief inspector of the Local Police then reviewed the past year, highlighting the constant efforts of the officers to improve safety, coexistence and service to the residents of Mijas. He thanked all the honourees for their years of service, describing them as “some of the

best professionals” he has had the privilege to know.

The mayoress closed the ceremony, during which one blue-distinction medal, 29 white-distinction medals, and more than ten commendations were awarded to officers. “We know we are in good hands, we know we are safe with the Local Police of our municipality”, said Mata, noting that “the Mijas Town Hall has announced 13 posts to reinforce the Local Police. The objective is to ensure a closer and more effective service: ten positions for new recruits for senior officers through internal promotion”. She added that efforts will continue “to request proper Civil Guard facilities for our municipality”.

Political representation

The municipal corporation highlighted the importance of the Local Police as a pillar of security for the residents of Mijas. For Mario Bravo, spokesperson for the PP in the Town Hall, it was a “day to thank

those dedicated to protecting us in traffic, security and public safety. I think today is the perfect day to say thank you to each of those more than 140 police officers”.

The deputy spokesperson for Vox, Francisco Jerez, added that “the officers collaborate with the Mijas Fire Brigade, Civil Protection and Operational Services. From Vox, we want to emphasise that this cooperation between municipal services ensures citizen protection”.

“A very important day”, added Juan Carlos Maldonado, spokesperson for Por Mi Pueblo Mijas, “to recognise and thank the Local Police for upholding regulations and safety, together with the Civil Guard, making Mijas a safe municipality”.

More than 40 officers were awarded distinctions and commendations for their work, not only in safety but also in other areas where the Local Police play a key role.

“I completely support the distinctions that have been awarded”, said Josele González, spokesperson for the PSOE in the council. “I also want to note that today marks the one-year anniversary of the DANA disaster in Valencia, and I very much missed that the work of those Mijas officers who were there wasn’t recognised”, he added.

The spokesperson for Cs Mijas, José Carlos Martín, also wished to “congratulate all those who received decorations”, as well as “the entire Local Police force for the outstanding work they do, as well as the administrative and civilian staff who work with them”.

votes in favour of the government team, the abstention of Ciudadanos and the vote against from the PSOE.

“When we took office at the Mijas Town Hall two years ago, one of the main issues we found was the delay in the payment invoices for various reasons. One of them was that money was sometimes being spent beyond the

available credit. Over the past two years, we have sought to correct those excesses, and this is the final budget amendment we are making in order to pay many of those outstanding invoices”, explained the councillor for Economy and Finance, Mario Bravo (PP).

Mijas definitively approves its new General Subsidy Ordinance

I.P. During the October plenary session, the new General Subsidy Ordinance of the Mijas Town Hall was definitively approved. The councillor for Citizen Participation, Silvia Marín, presented the motion / M.L.

Marín spoke about some of the new features included in this ordinance, among them that from

now on, subsidies will be granted through a system of competitive tendering. She also clarified that “this government team will not cut back on the human resources of this Town Hall, and we will continue to include in the budgets those items that can support the projects submitted by the associations and groups of the municipality in all areas”.

Mijas hosts the III ACE Málaga Contest under its wings

N.L. / A.L. Last weekend, the Cortijo Don Elías hosted more than 600 birds from Spain and Portugal in the third edition of the ACE Málaga 2025 Competition, an event that brought together breeders and enthusiasts of psittacines and lovebirds. The competition was organised by the Department of Livestock, together with the Agapornis Club España Association (ACE Málaga) and the Andalusian Ornithological Federation (FOA). “We are very pleased with this third edition, especially because they counted on the Town Hall to organise it”, said the councillor for the area, Eloy Belmonte (Vox).

‘‘What we focus on most in the competition”, added the president of ACE Málaga, Salvador Martín, “are colours, which in technical terms are called mutations. Here, we admire the beauty of the bird”.

On the final day, the birds were

evaluated and prizes were awarded to the best participants, recognising the quality and diversity of the birds taking part. With specimens from Spain and Portugal, visitors were able to enjoy this exhibition.

Everyone helped decorate the school, which looked absolutely “to die for”. Students came dressed as witches, Draculas, vampires, blood-stained doctors and nurses, werewolves, evil clowns, zombies, mummies and even Death itself. Everyone contributed one euro for wearing

Beginning with a welcome drink and a delicious three-course meal, followed by live entertainment from violinist and vocalist Crissie Ryan, the event was sponsored by Ibex Insurance and Costa Connection Magazine, and raised 2,100 euros to help feed and care for the more than 500 dogs and 200 cats at the shelter.

The event also featured a charity auction and raffle with great prizes donated by members of the community and ACE supporters. The president and founder of ACE, Fabienne Paques, delivered a heartfelt speech about the ongoing cha-

The Town Hall updates the municipal Territorial Emergency Plan

The local government highlights that the main improvement is a faster response time from the emergency services

The Mijas Town Hall has completed the review and update of its Municipal Territorial Emergency Plan (PTEM), a document that incorporates the new provisions of Decree 69/2024 of the Junta de Andalucía, which establishes the declaration of a state of emergency of general interest in the region.

The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP); the councillor responsible for the Fire Brigade, Francisco Jerez (Vox), and the head of the Local Police, Juan Manuel Rosas, were briefed on the drafting of the PTEM on Tuesday 28th during a meeting with the deputy chief of the Mijas Fire and Rescue Service, Francisco Manuel Mérida, and

Wednesday 29th marked the first anniversary of one of Spain’s most devastating natural disasters, the DANA storm, which ravaged much of Valencia and other parts of the country, including some towns in Malaga. Soroptimist International (SI) Costa del Sol commemorated the anniversary to “remember the victims and reaffirm our commitment to continue supporting the survivors”, they said.

SI Costa del Sol did not hesitate to show its solidarity with those affected. The club organised food and fundraising collections, local charity events and reached out to Soroptimist clubs across Europe to request donations. Among its initiatives, the launch of ‘Soroptimist by your side’ stood out, a programme through which the Mijas club has helped one woman from Cártama and six from Valencia to rebuild their businesses and their lives. Many noted that “the people helped the people when institutional support was slow to arrive,’ said SI Costa del Sol.

victims of the DANA Soroptimist stands with the

The group has helped a woman from Cártama and six from Valencia to rebuild their businesses after the floods a year ago

A year after the storm, with the programme now completed, the group reviewed this solidarity effort in the magazine programme ‘Mijas Hoy’ on Mijas 3.40 TV . The vice-president of Soroptimist, Aura Roderick, recalled the aim of the project: “To help businesses run by individual women entrepreneurs affected by the DANA, whose businesses were destroyed, and we have supported them to get back on their feet and stay standing”.

Trip to ground zero

Identifying the women the club could help was a difficult but not impossible task In January, some members travelled to the affected areas to meet them in person and establish contact, which was maintained over time through phone calls, financial assistance and legal advice. Soroptimist treasurer Cornelia Albadalejo

described the harsh reality of the first visit: “although much had already been cleared, there was still a lot of desolation” and people shared “very traumatic stories”. However, on a second visit in September, the team was able to see the progress made.

One of the most notable cases was that of Carol García, owner of an art academy in Paiporta (Valencia), who lost everything. Thanks to the club’s support, including funding for a professional ceramic kiln, her business was rebuilt. In September, they vi-

sited the newly reopened academy to witness the success of the programme.

During the visit, which was also attended by councillors from the Paiporta Town Hall, the focus of the project was

discussed. Its methodology has been simple but effective: offering a listening ear, encouragement and direct financial support without unnecessary paperwork, requiring only a few photos of the damage and an invoice to expedite aid.

The visit also initiated a new artistic collaboration. Soroptimist connected the academy with José Ángel Ruiz González, master ceramist at the Alfajar Gallery in Malaga, who will support Carol by giving a master class at her premises.

SI Costa del Sol also highlighted two other stories. First, Vi, a yoga teacher who photographed the destruction of her studio, creating a powerful visual testimony to the impact of the floods. SI Costa del Sol is currently seeking an exhibition space for her work, anyone interested in displaying it can contact them at soroptimist.costa-

delsol@gmail.com.

The second story is that of María, a physiotherapist from Utiel, who lost both her home and workplace. Although she has returned to her profession and continues to rebuild her life day by day, she has not yet been able to return to her home, encouraging her children with words of hope. In her community, recovery is progressing slowly: traffic lights remain out of service and the train station is still closed.

Appeal to the public

SI Costa del Sol has urged the public not to forget these people. In addition, the Mijas club is preparing a detailed report for the Soroptimist representatives at the United Nations, outlining the main needs, challenges and recommendations arising from their work with the people affected.

Roberto’s Grill and Sports Bar organises its sixth charity lunch in aid of Mijas Felina

This establishment raised funds for this association dedicated to the protection of feral cats

This is the sixth year that Roberto’s Grill and Sports Bar in Calahonda has organised a charity lunch in aid of Mijas Felina, an association that has been working for a decade to protect feral cats in the municipality. “We are delighted with the turnout this year, it has been a great day. New people have come along and we also have those who return year after year, which makes us very happy. We have been doing this for six years now”, said the bar’s owner, Roberto González

The establishment prepared two paellas and held raffles for the occasion, while Mijas Felina also set up several stalls selling merchandi-

se and second-hand items. “They have always been very supportive of us here, and all the funds raised go entirely to the association”, said the president of the feline collective, Cristina Sánchez

Selfless work

Mijas Felina highlighted that their work is entirely voluntary. “We started by controlling the street colonies, that is, neutering the cats so they wouldn’t reproduce”, explained Sánchez, who went on to say that their work now goes much further. “We also care for sick cats, we have a network of foster homes, and a group dedicated exclusively to adoptions. We’re growing all the time, and the

workload keeps increasing. We’ve been doing this for ten years now. We also receive support and coordinate with the Town Hall, and things have improved considerably”, she said.

“I love animals, it’s something my parents instilled in me and it’s what motivates me to organise this event. We try to support Mijas Felina, which uses its resources to manage and mediate in matters related to colonies and so on. Within our means, we do our best to help every year”, added González.

Those who wish to collaborate with Mijas Felina can contact the association by email at mijasfelina@hotmail.com or through its social media channel.

‘Women Invest in Women’ brings together sixty female entrepreneurs in Mijas

This is the first time the initiative has been held on the Costa del Sol after selling out in major cities such as New York and Toronto

M.F. After successful editions in cities including New Orleans, New York, Toronto and Miami, the ‘Women Invest in Women’ tour arrived on the Costa del Sol for the first time, with Mijas as the chosen location. The event took place on Saturday 25th at the Play Restaurant, where sixty female entrepreneurs gathered, the venue’s full capacity.

“For us, it was also important to hold this kind of event here because we have a hub of very talented women with many businesses. We wanted to give them visibility and offer them a safe and inspiring space”, said one of the members of the organising committee, Yasmina Stitou Messaoudi-Moussi

“I am very happy to host this women’s gathering”, said the co-founder of Play Restaurant, Ana María Ignat Berget, where the event was held. As an entrepreneur herself, she recognises how challenging it can be to develop a business.

Female empathy

opportunities. Participants attend workshops and sessions on topics such as “self-care and self-knowledge, which are very important when we talk about women in leadership positions”, said Stitou Messaoudi-Moussi

Women from sectors as diverse as consulting, real estate, beauty and fashion came together in Mijas. “The percentage of capital invested in women-led businesses in Europe is 1.8 per cent”, she said. That is why, she added, “the only way to improve this figure is for more women to invest in women. Ultimately, we share a common empathy and understanding, we must support each other, create connections and build community, that’s incredibly important”, she concluded.

Women Invest in Women

“Animal shelters depend on volunteers; we don’t receive any subsidies. Our dogs go for walks thanks to volunteers.

Everything depends on them, on those who come and give us their time, however little it may be. Some people make small financial donations, donate food, help us spread the word on social media. All of that really helps”, added Alberto Rosado.

José Miguel García a PAD volunteer explained: “We are here to help an association that does exceptional work with animals. I first got to know PAD when

“All the stalls are run by volunteers and everything raised goes to PAD. We are very grateful to the Town Hall for providing us with the space, because here we can raise some money”, said PAD’s president Cristina Alberto Rosado. The aim was to raise funds to care for the dogs and cats at the shelter, but also to raise awareness of PAD’s work.

I went to adopt my first dog. I have also been a foster home, which I think is very important, and I have adopted other dogs as well. For me, PAD does excellent work”, he said.

Rosa María Martín, another volunteer, had her own stall at the autumn fair. “We have a little bit of everything, jewellery and various items that people give me. I ask for things wherever I can, and we sell what people donate and whatever else we can”, she explained. Would you like to collaborate with PAD? You can. Just contact them by email at padmijas@ gmail.com, or find them on social media.

‘Women Invest in Women’ is presented as a movement that connects women entrepreneurs, leaders and creatives from around the world. Its aim is to offer women training, information and networking

Each meeting of the ‘Women Invest in Women’ movement, they say, “creates unique opportunities to promote collaboration, growth and connection among women who are redefining the future of business, leadership and investmen”. The movement ended its season in Spain, in Mijas, and promises to return with new initiatives.
