in Madrid “essential works” Ana Mata lays out to the Government
to Improve Mobility
The mayoress highlights the urgency of essential projects in a meeting with the Directorate General of Road
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), has presented the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility in Madrid with a series of essential measures to improve traffic flow both within the municipal area and on the access roads to the A-7 motorway. These initiatives include road widening, bypassing population centres to access the motorway and basic connections designed to alleviate daily congestion in the metropolitan area.
At the meeting, held with the deputy director general of Plan-
the need to minimise the traffic problems that local residents experience every day
ning and Operations of the Directorate General of Roads, Rosalía Bravo Antón , the mayoress was accompanied by the head of Infrastructure of the Town Hall, Fernando Jiménez . The most advanced of the projects is the widening of the A-387 (MijasFuengirola road), which received the relevant approval at this meeting. The project for this work has been drafted and, with this authorisation, is now entering its final contracting phase.
This work will convert the road into a boulevard with two lanes in each direction, separated by a central reservation, on the section between the Camino de Campanales roundabout and the AP-7 motorway junction. Currently, it is a single-lane road with no separation, which slows traffic and can lead to a higher accident rate.
Connection between residential areas
Another project discussed at the meeting is the connection between the Mirador de la Sierrezuela and Manzanilla residential
areas via an underpass beneath the AP-7 motorway. This project, which is essential for improving mobility between the two urban areas, must receive first authorisation from the Public Water Authority (DPH) of the Junta de Andalucía, after which the Directorate-General for Roads will process its approval. It will prevent the continuous use of the Camino de Coín and shorten journey times.
In addition, Mata stressed the importance of the Ministry of Transport approving the demolition of the Las Lagunas pedestrian bridge over the A-7, near the church of San Manuel González, and its replacement with a bridge for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This action will connect the urban areas to the north and south of this route.
Feasibility study
Furthermore, the Mijas Town Hall will shortly award the ‘Feasibility study for improving the permeability of the A-7 motorway in the urban agglomeration of Mijas Costa’, which will consist of a series of measures aimed at ensuring that access to this road does not necessarily have to pass through urban centres, as is currently the case, offering alternatives that avoid long delays.
In this regard, the councillor explained that one of the projects included in this study is the construction of an acceleration lane to join the A-7 from the La Cala roundabout towards Malaga.
Similarly, the Town Hall considers it essential to remove the solid line that currently prevents vehicles leaving the La Butibamba area from accessing the A-7 directly, forcing all traffic to enter the town centre and causing constant congestion. Mijas is requesting that a broken line be installed to allow traffic to bypass the town and join the motorway, as is the case in the area around the Fuengirola Castle.
Meeting with the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.-
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, has travelled to Madrid where, together with the head of Infrastructure at the Town Hall, Fernando Jiménez, she held a meeting with Rosalía Bravo Antón, deputy director general of Planning and Operations at the Directorate General for Roads, in order to convey that “Mijas’ demands, which are fair, have been technically studied and justified, and will greatly help to alleviate the constant traffic problems experienced daily by tens of thousands of Mijas residents” / Mijas Town Hall Press Office.

The ‘Feasibility study for improving the permeability of the A-7 motorway in the urban agglomeration of Mijas Costa’, which will be awarded shortly, promotes actions that minimise the impact of the A-7 passing through urban centres.

The improvement of the A-387 road linking Mijas and Fuengirola, specifically the section running between the Camino de Campanales roundabout and the AP-7 motorway junction, has been authorised by the Directorate-General for Roads to enter the contracting phase. Currently, there is a solid line at this point, forcing vehicles to enter the town centre of La Cala in order to rejoin the motorway towards Málaga, causing constant traffic problems. In this regard, Mijas is requesting a solution similar to that in the Fuengirola castle area, where a broken line allows drivers to join the A-7 without entering the municipality.

The La Cala Lions Club is organising a new edition of its popular ‘Move Against Diabetes’ walk, which will take place on the 2nd of November along the Coastal Path. In addition, the Lions have arranged a full day of festivities and awareness-raising activities to collect funds for their diabetes prevention group.
To mark World Diabetes Day, celebrated annually on the 14th of November, the club is organising the seventh edition of this walkathon to combat the disease and promote healthy living. The walk will start at 10:00 hours. It will cover a 2.5 km route along the path, followed by a large health festival featuring information stands, free glucose testing, stalls, musical performances, Zumba, batucada, and a market.
According to Mercy Chapman, one of the club’s volunteers, “we are organising this walk again because many people still do not know they have high blood sugar and have nerver had a glucose test. We invite everyone to attend this event to raise funds so the Lions can continue offering free tests. Any donation is welcome. The event is being organised in collaboration with the Foreigners and Sports Departments, with the aim of raising funds for the free glucose prevention and monitoring work carried out by the club’s diabetes support group.

The club conducts glucose tests on the last Wednesday and Saturday of each month during the charity market held in front of the La Cala Branch Office, as well as in some establishments in the area.
World Diabetes Day was established in 1991 by the World Health Organisation and the International Diabetes Federation in response to growing concern about the increasing health threat posed by this disease. As every year, events are organised to highlight its importance. This day, November 14th, was chosen because it is the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, together with Charles Best, discovered insulin in 1922.

Many people travelled to CAC Mijas to see the artist’s work, which stands out for its great realism and attention to detail, sometimes making the paintings indistinguishable from photographs. Soroptimist Leadership
Mijas hosts the first Academy for Women
Soroptimist International Costa del Sol will bring together 24 women of 17 nationalities from November 5th to 11th for training in Mijas
M. Fernández / B. Martín
This is a pioneering project and, for the organisation, “a dream come true”. Soroptimist International Costa del Sol is launching the Soroptimist Leadership Academy for Women (SLA), which will be held for the first time in the municipality from the 5th to the 11th of November. Mijas will host this transformative international event, with the participation of 24 young women of 17 different nationalities from across Europe, aged between 20 and 30.
“It is finally going to be a reality to organise a leadership academy for women in Mijas. It is a dream come true for me, and for the club too, because what we want is to create opportunities for young women. And as we are an international organisation, we invite women from all over Europe to participate”, said the president of SI Costa del Sol, Daphne Theunissen, at the presentation. Report by Beatriz Martín and Nuria Luque / Design: Carmen Martín
On Monday 20th, Mijas hosted the Third Andalusian Congress on Families, Childhood, Adolescence and Youth, a space for dialogue and reflection at the Manuel España Theatre (Las Lagunas) which focused on leisure and free time as tools to enhance family wellbeing. Organised by the Regional Ministry of Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality of the Junta de Andalucía, the congress brought together families, professionals and organisations from the social, educational, health and associative sectors to examine the “challenges and opportunities” involved in promoting healthy, inclusive leisure activities that fosters emotional bonds within families.
At the congress, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), highlighted the role of families as key to learning values and emphasised the importance of safeguarding childhood and adolescence. “We have to put all our energy

The councillor stressed that this recognition “is the result of the joint work of hoteliers, residents and the various municipal departments, which have made it possible for Mijas to be today an example of commitment to recycling and caring for the environment”. Similarly, Belmonte explained that the amount of glass collected during this period represents a saving of more than 70,000 euros for the municipal coffers, “which, otherwise, would have had to be paid by the residents of Mijas, due to the waste disposal tax that the municipality must pay if that glass had been deposited in the general waste containers”.
Belmonte expressed special thanks to the hoteliers for their daily efforts, as well as to the various local associations and groups that actively collaborated in the campaign, including the taxi drivers’ associations, the municipal fleet, the cleaning fleet and the street cleaning staff. “Mijas has demonstrated that when we work together with unity and responsibility, we can achieve results that transcend borders”, he said.

Nine establishments join the IV Las Lagunas Tapas Route
The new edition kicked off on Saturday 18th, and will offer a tapa and a drink for 3.50 euros during each establishment’s opening hours until 29th of November
The fourth edition of the Las Lagunas Tapas Route has already fired up the kitchens of the nine participating establishments. From Saturday 18th until the 29th of November, locals and visitors alike can enjoy a tapa and a drink (a small beer, a glass of house wine, water or a soft drink) for just 3.50 euros.
The initiative, launched by the Commerce Department of the Mijas Town Council in collaboration with the Federation of Associations of Mijas (FAM), kicks off this new edition with some new features, running every day for both lunch and dinner according to the opening hours of the participating venues. Year after year, these establishments improve their gastronomic offerings. “We are very happy with this fourth edition; the bars are getting better and better. This year the level is impressive, the tapas are delicious. I invite everyone to come along because it’s worth

The Mijas Craft Association presents its new charity calendar in aid of AFA
The distribution points for the calendars include the headquarters of both groups
C.L. On Thursday 23rd, the Mijas Craft Association (AAM) presented its charity calendar for 2026. On this occasion, all proceeds will go to AFA Mijas, a collective with which it has collaborated on
previous occasions and which it always keeps in mind. The calendar celebrates the process as much as the final pieces, the time, effort, love, and dedication that each artisan invests
to bring a creation to life. This is what the photographs in the 2026 calendar presented by the Mijas Craft Association show. According to its president, Sonia Lekuona, “This year we are going to show the hidden side of craftsmanship. We are going to highlight the work, the hours artisans devote to each piece, all the

costs involved, the daily effort, attending markets, loading and unloading merchandise. We want to show the day-to-day that people don’t see, because they only see the final piece”.
The association is once again producing its charity calendar with the support of the Culture Department, Mijas Comunicación and several sponsors. The councillor for Culture, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), thanked the artisans for their solidarity and highlighted “the important work of AFA Mijas, which reaches all families. I would also like to thank, on behalf of the Culture Department, the artisans for their ongoing collaboration, and Mijas Comunicación for producing and designing this calendar.
Destination of the funds
In this 2026 edition, all proceeds from this calendar will go to AFA Mijas to support its various social projects with the elderly. The director of the day centre, Mari Carmen López, thanked the artisans “for remembering our work. We are going to use the money raised to buy cognitive stimulation materials for the treatment of people with dementia”.
Lekuona assured that “AFA meets all the requirements to be beneficiaries. They are local, ac-

to Friday from 8 to 20 hours. They will also be entered into a final draw with great prizes. “We come to the route every year”, said María Martín. The tapas are a real draw: “They offer great quality, and on top of that, a drink and a tapa for 3,50 euros. You can’t get that anywhere else”, said Isabel Becerra
Distribution POINTS
Calendars can be purchased at the association’s headquarters Puerta del Ágora, and at AFA Mijas on Avenida de Méjico number 11. Both groups request the support of all residents through a small or large donation when collecting their calendar. In Mijas Pueblo, the celebrations organised by the Youth Department will begin at 16:00 hours in the Virgen de la Peña Square, while in La Butibamba park in La Cala they will start at 17:00 hours and at the Las Lagunas fairground at 17:30 hours.
The department encourages young and old alike to dress up in traditional Mexican Day of the Dead costumes, such as mariachis and catrinas.
Mijas Comunicación will broadcast a special programme with the best moments of the festivities. You can watch it on Mijas 3.40 TV, Facebook, and YouTube.
I.M. In order to offer a fun yet terrifying activity, as well as to raise funds for its activities, the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s Patients in Mijas (Afa Mijas) is organising a haunted house on the 31st of October, open to all citizens. It will take place at 20:00 hours at the association’s premises, located at Avenida de Méjico, number
11, in Mijas Pueblo. “The volunteers themselves take care of everything, from the cost of materials to preparing the decorations... without them it wouldn’t be possible”, said the manager of Afa Mijas, Mari Carmen López. This year, as a new feature, the association will organise a costume contest through social media. The councillor for Social
Inclusion, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), encouraged “people to come to this haunted house. The donation is very welcome to the association, with it they can meet their demand and carry out the great work they do with the elderly”.
