Long live the Virgen de la Peña!
The 8th of September was once again the big day for all Mijeños. The Virgen de la Peña, patron saint and perpetual mayoress of Mijas, filled the streets of the village with joy on her return to her hermitage after an emotional procession with farewells, decorative premieres, musical novelties and anniversaries. The meeting of the patron saint with the faithful, neighbours and tourists took place during the Mijas Fair, which concluded Monday 9th and which has been described as “a great fair” by the mayoress, Ana Mata / Amanda Gijón. THE SCHOOL YEAR In Mijas Over 7,000 children start
The figure is slightly lower than last year’s due to the drop in the birth rate, according to the councillor for education
Report by Irene Pérez and Carmen Martín
In Mijas, more than 7,000 children started the new academic year on Tuesday 10th, children in the second stage of Pre-school and Primary Education. Las Lagunas has received the largest number of children, some 4,800, followed by La Cala, with nearly 2,000, and Mijas Pueblo, with almost 400.
This first day was a good opportunity to get back in touch with teachers and classmates, and to find out what the coming months are going to be like. In general, students were happy and excited about going back to class, eager to learn and to meet up with friends, at least those who at the entrance of CEIP Las Cañadas, in Las Lagunas. “I was really looking forward to the start, especially to see my old friends again, but also because I’m going to meet new ones”, said Brianny González, as was Sara Jurado, who said she was very happy to be back at school “because I love it”. Although some of them feel that the holidays have been too short, that is the case of Alfonso Moreno who was less enthusiastic but optimistic “I really enjoy learning”, he said.
Nerves have marked this first day of school, and not only among the little ones, parents and grandparents were also nervous to say goodbye to their kids. Susana Cueto was “very nervous, my three children studied at this school and now I am here with my grandchildren”.
The elder siblings, who will start secondary school next week, also accompanied their siblings on this special day. This was the case of Aitor Cabello, who said that “I am a bit nervous and sad to be here, because I know I will miss the teachers and my classmates”.

children go to sleep earlier, because last night they were up late”, said Inmaculada Martín, also a mother at the school. The challenge for the student Alfonso Moreno will be to “only use the tablet for one hour a day, and the rest of the afternoon I will be studying, and I think I will be able to do it”.

Finally, Rojas wished all the children a “happy new year, in which they enjoy and learn a lot”. For her part, the councillor for Education emphasised “the service provided by the entire educational community, from the teaching staff to the caretakers and our employees, who work every day to ensure that children feel good, comfortable and in the best possible conditions”.

The Junta estimates at 23.5 million Education units
the investment in educational centres in Mijas since 2019
I.P. The Department of Educational Development and Vocational Training of the Junta de Andalucía has announced in a press release that, since 2019, the Junta de Andalucía has executed 23.5 million euros in up to 11 actions related to the construction, expansion and adaptation of educational centres in the municipality, being the “largest investment ever in education in Mijas”, stressed, adding that “until this period, the last educational centre built in the municipality dates from 2008”.
This academic year 2024/25, according to the Junta, will mark the opening of the Ana Carmona ‘Veleta’ Secondary School building, which will soon be operational without the completion of the finishing touches to a project costing more than 6 million euros “interfering in the development of its activity”.
They also value the arrival of Ana Mata (PP) as mayoress of Mijas “has allowed the reactivation of pending projects, offering alternatives and solutions to the problems arising from the proposed plots of land offered by previous

Thus, both the plots proposed for the extensions of the CEIP Jardín Botánico, which has a budget of 1.8 million, and for the IES La Cala (3.8 million), did not fit in with the necessary educational uses, according to the Junta. In this sense, they affirm that since 2019, despite the decrease in the number of students in the municipality in both pre-school and primary (some 600 students less), the same number of units has been maintained: 284. At the same time, the growth in secondary education (700 more students) resulted in the expansion of the available units, from 144 to 169.

The Mijas Town Hall, through a collaboration agreement signed on Wednesday 11th with the Malaga Veterinary Association, will have a Pet Identification Register, which is compulsory in all Andalusian municipalities. With this database, the town hall will have a record of the number of cats, dogs and ferrets with microchips in the town, as well as their health condition, “a figure close to 35,000 animals, of which almost 27,000 are dogs”, said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who received the president of the Malaga Veterinary Association, Juan Antonio de Luque , at the Town Hall to formalise this agreement, also accompanied by the councillor for Animal Welfare, Marco Cortés (PP).
About the registration, the mayoress of Mijas stressed the importance of “having this control to avoid possible diseases, especially considering that

For his part, De Luque stressed that “this municipal database also allows us to control the number of potentially dangerous animals in Mijas and the town hall to carry out actions to improve the welfare of pets”.
The agreement establishes a duration of four years and can be extended for a period of four additional years. It determines, among other aspects, that the Veterinary Association will be in charge of creating and managing the Municipal Pet Register, in the terms regulated by Law 11/2003 and Decree 92/2005; that it will carry out the computer processing of all data incorpo -

The Registry of Identification of Pets is mandatory in all municipalities of Andalusia and will allow the Town Hall to have a record of the number of cats, dogs and ferrets with microchips in the city, as well as their health status.
OBLIGATIONS FOR PET
OWNERS
Since 2005, it is mandatory to identify dogs, cats and ferrets with microchips. Since 2010, pet owners are also obliged to deworm and vaccinate them against rabies. In this sense, the mayoress insisted that “everyone who has animals must be responsible for passing these health controls, not only for the animal, but as a matter of public health”.
HEALTH GUARANTEES
This control helps to prevent possible diseases and to control the number of potentially dangerous animals.
The agreement includes six microchip readers for the town hall, which will allow the identification of any abandoned animal and the location of its owner.

José Luis Torrecilla , user of Afesol, read a manifesto approved by the entire corporation in

the last plenary session which showed the commitment of the municipality in the fight against this public health issue. The aim is to focus attention on suicide prevention by investing in the community, as “prevention must be aimed at the entire population through awareness-raising actions on warning signs, risk factors, myths surrounding suicide, maps of resources, etc. Because information and knowledge can save lives”. The Town Hall, according to the manifesto, is aware that “involvement and commitment from the community is necessary to make this problem more visible”. In this regard, it is essential to study, research and coordinate different sectors, such as security forces, health, education and social sectors. “In Mijas we are going to provide all the necessary tools for prevention, always supporting life and people so that they do not feel alone and helpless and have all the professional support but also the support of society”, said the mayoress, Ana Mata.
Prevention, key
The text also urges the Junta de Andalucía and the Government of Spain to allocate more resou-
rces to guarantee early diagnosis, dignified care and rapid, quality intervention for people with mental health problems. For his part, the president of the organisation, Francisco Cristian González , explained that this year they are working on suicide prevention under the title ‘Changing the narrative’, as today “there are many myths surrounding suicide and it is something that needs to be tackled in a clear and comprehensive way, which is why we need more resources from the system”. The councillor for Social Inclusion, Melisa Ceballos (PP), also stressed the importance of “making the problem of suicide more visible. We want to prevent people from having suicidal ideation, and reinforce in their heads the idea that life is beautiful, that we must enjoy it and that we must know how to manage certain emotions and certain thoughts that we may have had at some point in our lives”. The councillor from the Socialist Municipal Group, Hipólito Zapico stressed the importance of “making visible the problem of suicide, because in some way it has been hidden and it is a very serious situation that we need to make visible”.

The Mijas Pueblo Fair came to an end on Monday 9th of September after six intense days of celebration, from the fisrt day, on Wednesday 4th until Monday, which was a public holiday in the municipality as it fell on the day of the Patron Saint, the Virgen de la Peña, Sunday 8th September.
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata , made a very positive assessment and expressed that “it has been a great fair, in which we all enjoyed a great atmosphere. The days have passed by without any incidents and respect has prevailed above anything else. The concerts have been a great success and the procession, with the dome that we have premiered this year, was beautiful, with hundreds and hundreds of people accompanying the Virgen de la Peña”. We have had activities for children, adults, teenagers, and for the whole family. On Thursday we also had the celebratory dinner for our
elders and then the performances, which were very well received by the public. Of course there was also the day fair, where families, children, grandparents and young people could also enjoy, because parents went to the fair knowing that they could enjoy dancing while their children were in the play centre”, said the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín, during her visit to the Mijas Comunicación set to assess these days. “It has been a fair in style”, concluded the councillor.
