Twelve Lancefield residents have until December's end to tear down their fences and gardens to accommodate a new council footpath.

The High Street residents discovered, in May, their properties encroached the road reserve and they would need to foot the bill to correct it.

Some are being asked to shift entire front fencelines for as little as 30cms, an ask that residents have called "ludicrous" and "beyond unreasonable".

Macedon Ranges Shire Council issued warnings last month as it progressed plans for a 1.5m wide concrete footpath that stretches 265 metres.

Fourteen properties will be fronting the works.

Council's acting director of assets and operations, Colin Marshall, said a title surveyor verified 12 of those properties were encroaching into the road reserve.

"The fences on these properties are currently within the road reserve ranging between 300mm-800mm," he told the Express.

"In order for the council to deliver a functional footpath for the community,

achieving the correct alignment is key for pedestrian comfort and for controlling efficient overland stormwater flow.

"Council has resolved to apply a consistent approach to these type of works, whereby encroachment is addressed ahead of construction."

Residents told the Express they felt stressed about the impending cost, and saddened at the loss of established gardens.

More frustrating for some is that many don't want the footpath and say there is not the foot traffic to justify the works.

Safety upgrades urged

Woodend's St Ambrose Primary School community is urging pedestrian safety works to be prioritised in Macedon Ranges Shire Council's 2022/23 Budget.

Adding their voices to the budget debate earlier this month, parents relayed horror stories of near misses with cars while crossing roads and expressed their distress at the lack of: safe crossing points, warning signs and slow points.

More than 150 parents lodged concerns with the council outlining the need to address three dangerous pedestrian points in the precinct earlier this year. Five years before that, a similar campaign launched.

While the school has been discussing possible solutions with the council, the school community was disappointed to see no new funding had been awarded to the project in this year's draft budget.

The school community's budget submissions to the council are among 65 that will considered before the final budget is adopted later this month.

Woodend Golf Club is eager to see safety and accessibility upgrades of their rundown clubhouse.

The club welcomed news of $417,000 allocated in the 2022/23 Macedon Ranges Shire Council Budget for the long-awaited works.

WGC secretary James O'Brien said the current clubhouse was constructed in the 1950s and was "now at the end of its life".

"The job of restoring it or building a new clubhouse is well beyond the capacity of the club," he told councillors earlier this month.

"We're investing what we can with our limited resources to keep the grounds in excellent condition... however, our clubhouse is very tired, is inaccessible and often feedback that we get from members and businesses is: great course, terrible clubhouse.

"Without this investment the clubhouse will continue to deteriorate to the point that it won't be habitable, leading to its inevitable closure. This is a scenario that would unfortunately threaten the very existence of our club with our proud 114-year history."

The club has been in the community since 1908 and currently has about 230 members – a figure that grew during pandemic lockdowns.

For years the club has been a place for social connection with a thriving juniors' and women's program. It has also been open to other passive community uses.

The upgrade will meet the minimum required to ensure the building complies with contemporary building codes and disability access requirements.

WGC president Barney Hearnden said the club had been working with the council since 2000 to address clubhouse deficiencies.

"We know that councillors, council officers and club volunteers have been working for many years on this issue and the scale and complexity of the problems to be addressed is significantly larger than when council first recognised the club as a council asset," he said.

"At this stage we feel the safety accessibility issues are preventing the clubhouse from being used in other ways by other community groups.

"We're doing as much as we possibly can to improve our facilities, we need assistance with the clubhouse."

One of the letter recipients, John Matthews, said many of the fences were at least 40 years old with established gardens behind them. Most were existing when the properties were purchased.

"Everyone put their fences along the original fencing of the street that was here, which goes back many years. We've never had any dramas before now," he said.

"It's not just as simple as moving a fence, there's a lot more involved in this. For some people it will mean having to move water/gas services, established gardens and pathways.

It's going to be costly.

"The other problem is that no one's told us how far we're out. We've sent emails and tried to call. There's at least a three metre gap between the fence and the kerb and channel for a footpath."

But the council plans to tender these works in the new 2022-23 financial year.

Mr Marshall said, once a contractor was appointed, the council would advise residents on the planned start date for construction.

He said residents with concerns are encouraged to contact the council as soon as possible so that individual circumstances can be discussed further.

Western Region Crime Squad detectives are investigating a series of burglaries in Gisborne earlier this year.

Two thieves attended a strip of shops on Aitken Street about 3am on Thursday, March 17.

Using a jemmy bar, the duo broke into two cafes and a hair salon. Money was stolen from cash registers at each location.

It’s believed the pair fled the scene in a Ford Ranger utility with a canopy.

Investigators have released CCTV footage and images of two men they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

Both men have been described as caucasian with one believed to have a slim build and the other, a solid build.

The pair were wearing what appeared to be hooded jumpers, jeans and sneakers.

A 22-year-old man has had his car impounded after he was detected travelling at 151 km/h on the Calder Freeway in Elphinstone. Police clocked the Toyota Aurion at excessive speed on June 12.

The man from Sunshine West will have his car impounded for 30 days and will be required to pay fees of $1172.

He faces charges relating to excessive speed and probationary offences.

Dog attack devastates

A Baynton farming family has been left devastated after a neighbour's dogs attacked their sheep last week, killing two and maiming 33 that later had to be euthanised.

Farmer Daniel McKenna discovered the gruesome scene on his property last Wednesday.

"When I came to the paddock it was like a battle scene, there were sheep lying down kicking in the air everywhere," he said.

"The dogs had crushed their spines at the back of the neck or damaged their vertebrae so they couldn't stand, they could only kick.

"There were six wedge-tailed eagles circling them so I came home and got the rifle and we had to start putting the ewes down straight away."

Within his legal rights, Mr McKenna found and shot the two dogs, both of which were hunting breeds.

"It's irresponsible to bring this breed of dog up to the country," he said.

"If you own these kind of dogs you're taking a big risk because their natural instinct is to kill and the law is quite clear in the responsibility of the owner to contain the dog to their property."

After euthanising the most badly injured ewes, Mr McKenna sought veterinary help to begin treating the wounds of a further 36 of his dohne merino weaner ewes that were injured in the attack.

"It's the first generation of pure-bred dohnes that I had," he said.

"It's at least $5000 worth of sheep at a minimum."

East Trentham is among 10 areas to receive new weather stations across the state to help fire agencies respond to bushfires and support safer and more effective planned burns.

The new automatic weather stations will improve Victoria’s weather observations to allow firefighters to generate more accurate predictions of where a fire might spread, and use more precise local data for community warnings.

These remote automatic weather stations are transmitting their data via 4G or satellite iridium technology, which will appear on the BOM website.

In addition to continuously providing weather data, these static stations will also be used for detailed analysis of weather during bushfires, planned burns or other emergencies.

Trentham hub works begins

Demolition of sections of the Trentham Mechanics Institute has begun, as the building is transformed into the new $6 million Trentham Community Hub. Works are ramping up on the site, with tree removal, sewer realignment and removal of asbestos now completed.

The works will deliver a library, council customer service centre, visitor information services, large community hall, and function and meeting rooms.

Regional Development Victoria has provided $3.5 million through the Regional Infrastructure Fund and $1.1M was from the federal government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure grant.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of June 2023.

Contract awarded for plant upgrade

An upgrade of the Gisborne Recycled Water Plant to meet the needs of the region’s growing population is one step closer with Greater Western Water appointing a delivery partner to start work on the major project.

Comdain Infrastructure, part of the Service Stream Group, will design, construct and operate the new facility, with works expected to begin late 2022.

GWW is investing about $35 million on the plant upgrade.

The Gisborne RWP was built in the 1980s and treats wastewater from Gisborne, New Gisborne, Macedon and Mount Macedon.

It produces Class B recycled water that is used for local agriculture and recreation irrigation. The remainder is released into Jacksons Creek under an EPA Victoria licence.

GWW's general manager of growth and infrastructure, Amanda Smith, said population growth meant the plant was approaching its capacity and the upgrade

was necessary to better serve the community and protect the environment.

“The plant is a vital community asset treating community wastewater since the 1980s, but the region is growing and the local population is expected to increase by around 40 per cent by 2036,” she said.

“We’re meeting this challenge by investing in the plant upgrade, to ensure we can manage the increasing volumes of wastewater by turning it into fit-for-purpose recycled water.”

“The plant currently has the capacity to treat close to two million litres per day and when the upgrade is completed, this will increase to 3.65 million litres per day.”

“The upgrade will benefit all existing and future customers, improve the health of our waterways and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By using latest technology, we will improve the quality of recycled water and improve the plant’s energy efficiency by almost 40 per cent.”

The new facility is expected to be operational by 2025.

Scaffolding is up and workers in high vis vests are busy on site with Bendigobased construction company BLR Provincial carrying out the works.

The VicTrack project will revitalise both the old Newstead railway goods shed and Harcourt's vintage railway station building, transforming the atmosphere-drenched, but long languishing, local railway heritage buildings into new community spaces.

"The historic railway building restorations at Harcourt and Newstead are progressing well, and on track to be open to the public in the coming months," a VicTrack spokeswoman told the Express on Friday.

“The restored buildings will provide the communities of Harcourt and Newstead with new community meeting spaces, including modern accessible facilities.”

The works are being funded through the state government’s Community Use of Vacant Rail Buildings Program, which refurbishes vacant station buildings statewide so they can be opened and used by local communities.

BLR Provincial has experience in carrying out heritage restorations on many

buildings in Bendigo and was awarded the contract for the works following a competitive tender process.

Last year it completed works to upgrade the Bendigo Station waiting room.

Works on both the Newstead and the Harcourt buildings include carrying out structural repairs and refurbishment, as well as installing a kitchenette and accessible toilet so the buildings can be used for community events and meetings.

"They are beautiful old buildings," BLR Provincial's Dan Bahen told the Midland Express.

"We're just rapt to help reactive these old buildings and bring them back to life for the next hundred years."

Once the works are complete, Mount Alexander Shire Council will be the head tenant of the Harcourt Station building and the building will be managed by the Harcourt Progress Association as a community neighbourhood house with meeting, training, office and performance spaces.

Community Bank Maldon and District will be the head tenant of the Newstead Station Goods Shed and the building will be managed by the Redshed Arts Workshop Inc as a community arts workshop, learning and skills centre.

Both projects are being delivered in conjunction with an expert heritage architect, to ensure the restorations are sympathetic to the historic values of the buildings.

The weather may be making many feel Nordic lately, but for an increasing number of local souls that's a good thing.

In fact Nordic pole walking seems to really have hit its stride in both Castlemaine and Maldon with many keen locals picking up the poles and joining the warming weekly walking program sessions run by Dhelkaya Health.

The classes started up just before COVID struck back in 2019, and resumed earlier this year – with gusto.

But as of last Friday there's an added spring to their stride after the Castlemaine Rotary Club donated six flash new aluminium and carbon-fibre walking pole sets, worth hundreds of dollars, to the program.

"It's great to support people and organisations that support wellbeing," Castlemaine Rotary president Lyn Ellery said.

Lyn says the Rotary Club decided to support the program after members heard firsthand from a local person whose health and wellbeing were transformed for the better after she took up Nordic pole walking to help with recovery after a serious injury.

In addition to that, organisers of the popular sessions that are all led by specially trained volunteers, are about to introduce a brand-new additional after-hours option for those with day jobs to maintain.

"At the moment we have weekly volunteer-led sessions in Castlemaine and Maldon, but in spring we'll also be running sessions in Harcourt and Newstead as well," Dhelkaya Health health promotion officer Liza Shaw said.

"And in July we're also introducing a new 6.30pm evening session in the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens for workers as well."

five hours later, the 'woolly mammoth’s' daring escapades came to an end in a scene worthy of the Man from Snowy River, except the colt from old Regret was a wayward sheep.

“I am just so proud of our team and their tenacity to bring a good outcome for this abandoned animal," Pam said.

"She surely would not have survived another winter with all of that wool burdening her down."

Now relieved of 26 kilos of matted, twig, blackberry and insect-infested wool, an operation that took local Castlemaine shearer, Ray Sharrock, just under an hour to complete, Victoria is as defiant as ever and is in surprisingly great condition.

Victoria will now live out her days in peace at Edgar’s Mission, where she will never be abandoned again.

Yarns don't have much better endings than that if you are a sheep.

A Castlemaine shearer has played a key role in the triumphant yarn of Victoria the overly burdened sheep, relieving her of a massive matted fleece following her hairy rescue from the wild.

It took 18 kind hearts a total of five hours on steep and rugged terrain in the bitter cold and rain, but lost sheep Victoria, carrying a whopping 26 kilos of wool, has finally been brought to safety.

About four years ago, Kilmore East local Vicki spotted eight abandoned sheep roaming in the rugged mountainous area just shy of the Monument Hill Reserve. As time passed, that number had dwindled to a lone one, with Vicki’s concerns mounting.

“With her fleece growing longer and longer by the day, I didn’t know how much longer the poor animal would survive,” Vicki said.

Reaching out to multiple agencies for assistance, the final call landed on the kind-hearted ears of Edgar’s Mission, notfor-profit haven for formerly farmed animals based in Lancefield.

“After a previous failed rescue attempt in summer, we’d all but given up hope of finding the sheep as she then went missing,” said sanctuary founder and director Pam Ahern.

Their second attempt was met with the challenges of a bitter winter’s day, complete with heavy fog, chilling winds and rain, while they tried to navigate the mountainous terrain.

“It was indeed the hardest rescue we have ever undertaken,” Pam said.

“We knew this would be our last chance to catch this poor sheep, so we gave it all we had.

"Our rescue team of 18 split into several groups, with scouts stationed at strategic points across the rugged terrain."

Small acts make a big impact.

The latest exhibition as Castlemaine's newest arts space, Artpuff at The Mill, was unveiled on Friday evening.

Puffpaper II features the works of Ginny Grayson, Debra Patterson and Kynan Sutherland. All on paper, all drawing on subjects close to home.

Ginny Grayson has exhibited nationally and internationally, was awarded the 2008 Dobell Prize for Drawing, and has been included in publications on Contemporary Drawing. Her work is held in various Australian collections including the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

She lives, draws and walks dogs in Fryerstown. Talking about the work on show, Grayson says she adores animals, especially dogs.

"The works in Puffpaper II are of my beloved mates, past and present. I love watching and drawing them. They always manage to keep me spellbound. I only wish they lived for much longer….don’t we all,” Grayson says.

You can feel this adoration in the work, in the gentle constant movement of charcoal across paper, and the familiarity that comes through in how the form (sleeping, watching, waiting …) is captured. The result of quiet observation and an accomplished drawing practice.

Alongside are drawn landscapes by Kynan Sutherland, completed en plein air in the local landscape around Castlemaine.

Sutherland describes the work and the process of making it...

“Sitting quietly in the bush I let the natural rhythms of the landscape guide my hand, using a soft pencil and an old calligraphy brush I bought from Japan," he says.

"I've always been fascinated by the way particular marks speak for the whole. The

It speaks to the inherent rest at the heart of all things. These spontaneous and unselfconscious watercolours are celebrations of the natural world and our place within it.”

Sutherland has exhibited widely. He has received numerous prizes including the AME Bale Painting Prize (finalist), Dominique Segan Drawing Prize (winner), Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing (finalist), John Leslie Art Prize (finalist) and the Castlemaine State Festival Art Award (twice winner).

Also inspired by what’s around her, Debra Patterson has on show a collection of studies, of both domestic and landscape environments. Abstracted still life and quietly observed charcoal sketches, honouring the beauty of drawn line and warm, sustained looking. A show to take in slowly, and not to miss.

Puffpaper II will feature until July 10. You can find Artpuff at The Mill in Walker Street.

Soulful songstress heads to the ‘Maine Soulful songstress Hannah Acfield is bringing her debut solo album to Castlemaine, one of the limited regional dates on her upcoming national tour.

The Melbourne-based muso faced a few epiphanies during the ‘lost years’ of COVID. But in direct opposition to the physicality of being locked down, she discovered a freedom and revitalised sense of purpose through a total change in artistic direction.

The late 2021 release of her debut solo LP No Light Without Shade, was her blossoming.

The album saw Acfield move beyond the folk sounds that defined her early career as part of The Acfields duo, and into the warmth and passion of soul music, a genre that's allowed her to explore new song-writing styles.

The response from media and fans alike has been strong, with the I Heart Songwriting Club calling the album a “masterpiece”.

The Courier Mail compared her to Linda Ronstadt, describing her voice as “extraordinary,” while City Hub declared that “Acfield owns soul”.

St Ambrose Primary School student sustainability leaders Patrick and Ben were devastated to find the hens gone.

Four isa brown hens were stolen from St Ambrose Primary School in Woodend over the Queen's Birthday weekend.

Staff and students were devastated to make the discovery with signs of damage to cyclone fencing and an open coop.

"The top of the cyclone fence in which the coop was enclosed was damaged and the coop was opened, the latches and pins opened. Four out of five hens were stolen," principal Bronwyn Phillips told the Express.

"We will have to put in security cameras in our garden area as a result of this."

Ms Phillips said students had completed the chicken coop as part of their sustainability unit and STEAM /inquiry project and were upset to learn the news.

"A parent donated the hens three weeks ago and the students were enjoying looking after them and waiting for eggs to be laid," she said.

"We also got the hens to support our student's mental health and wellbeing. They were bonding with the hens whom they had named and feel upset and sad that they have been stolen."

The school has reported the incident to police and is urging anyone with information to report it to the school or police.

Romsey-based security firm, Pacific Security Services Pty Ltd, has been penalised for failing to back-pay employee entitlements.

The Federal Circuit and Family Court imposed a $18,900 penalty against the company earlier this month.

Pacific Security Services failed to comply with a compliance notice requiring the back-payment of entitlements to a worker who performed work for the company as a security officer between November 2017 and May 2019.

The court has also ordered the company to comply with the notice to back-pay the worker in full.

Fair Work Ombudsman Sandra Parker said business operators that failed to act on compliance notices needed to be aware they could face court-imposed penalties on top of having to back-pay workers.

“When compliance notices are not followed, we are prepared to take legal

action to ensure workers receive their lawful entitlements,” Ms Parker said.

“Any employees with concerns about their pay or entitlements should contact us for free advice and assistance.”

The regulator investigated after receiving a request for assistance from the affected worker.

A Fair Work inspector issued a compliance notice in February 2020 after forming a belief that Pacific Security Services had underpaid the security officer his entitlements under the Security Services Industry Award 2010.

The inspector believed the security officer had been underpaid minimum wage rates, casual loadings, a vehicle allowance and penalty rates for weekend, public holiday and night work.

Survey goes quarterly Macedon Ranges Shire Council will move Community Satisfaction Survey interviews from being conducted annually to quarterly.

The council says the move will provide a more accurate reflection of key themes and opportunities for improvement or development.

Chief executive officer Bernie O’Sullivan said the survey would still involve about 400 interviews being conducted by phone among a representative sample of residents.

These will be over the course of the year compared to only once per year.

“The survey is an important method of assessing the council’s performance across a range of measures and to identify ways to provide improvement or more effective service delivery to residents,” Mr O'Sullivan said.

“Our hope is that in spreading the survey across the year, the data will enable even greater insights and ultimately responsiveness from council. It is one of the ways we are seeking to strengthen our engagement with the community this year.”

About a dozen councils in Victoria are now undertaking quarterly interviewing and have found it to be beneficial in capturing community sentiment at different points throughout the year.

The first round of quarterly interviews for the next survey began on June 16 and will run until July 3.

Some households may receive a call from independent market research agency, National Field Services, which has been commissioned to conduct the survey on behalf of the council.

Calls will only come from a fixed line number, not a mobile phone and the caller will always identify themselves and state that they are from National Field Services.

Learn to play bridge

The Macedon Ranges Bridge Club is looking for new players.

If you enjoy playing cards or making new friends, you are invited to go along to its Learn to Play Bridge classes that begin on July 11.

“Bridge is a fantastic card game that challenges the mind and keeps us mentally active," said the secretary of the Woodendbased club, Cate Carr.

"It can take a little effort to learn but provides years of enjoyment, social interaction and friendship.

“It has been a difficult few years for the community and the club struggled through COVID like everyone else.

“We had to play online during the lockdowns but now we are back and looking for new players."

Bridge is played around the world, with clubs in the major cities and most regional centres. The Macedon Ranges Bridge Club attracts players from Kyneton, Woodend, Gisborne, Macedon, Lancefield, Daylesford, Sunbury and all places in between.

Bridge is sometimes likened to chess

with cards – it requires brainpower and logic but also partnership skills and perhaps a little luck. It is therefore both social and challenging – so fun for all.

“It is a partnership game but you don’t need a partner to come to the lessons, as we can match you up with another learner,” Ms Carr said.

“If you have played 500 or solo, bridge might be for you, but you do not have to have any card playing experience to learn the game.”

The 10-week Learn to Play Bridge classes start on Monday July 11 at 12.30pm in the meeting room at the Woodend Library.

The cost is $70, which includes refreshments and class notes.

Trentham Fire Brigade received $17,000 for a new generator through the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program.

One year on from devastating storms that rocked the region, Trentham Fire Brigade has received a boost to support its response efforts.

The brigade received $17,000 for a new generator through the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited the station to announce the funding last week.

“Recovering from a disaster is complex and takes time – we’re continuing to provide support to local families, businesses and communities who were affected by this unprecedented event," she said.

“We can’t change what these communities have been through, but we are doing what we can make recovery that little bit easier and build back better and stronger.”

The Trentham station was used as a Local Command Facility for four days following the storm event, operating 24 hours a day to help coordinate local response efforts. The station was a central point for those assisting on the ground, including CFA, VICSES, Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police.

The storm and flood had a significant impact across the region.

In Hepburn Shire, more than 45 per cent of the shire experienced damage, with 10,000 trees down and 220 roads damaged. In Macedon Ranges, 345 properties reported asset damage.

The free cleanup of damaged and destroyed structures and debris on residential properties was jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments.

CASTLEMAINE SMILES

The $105 million project cleaned up more than 1000 residential properties statewide, including 133 in Hepburn Shire and 167 in Macedon Ranges Shire.

To manage the large volumes of fallen trees and debris, an innovative green waste facility was established in Romsey.

Since its opening, the facility has processed more than 13,000 tonnes of trees and storm debris which have now been returned to the community as timber, fence posts, sleepers, stakes, firewood, mulch and sawdust.

Ms Thomas said the government had invested $8.2 million to help affected councils coordinate and drive recovery locally, including to help process planning matters quickly.

The government will also invest a further $4.76 million to extend this funding to eight affected councils for another 12 months, including Macedon Ranges Shire and Hepburn Shire, ensuring they are resourced for the long-term recovery journey ahead.

The $13.8 million recovery support package announced following the disaster provided dedicated and ongoing recovery case support. It has since provided a gateway for 2200 Victorians seeking advice, accommodation, insurance, health, wellbeing and financial support.

The government has also streamlined planning requirements and the application process to help residents rebuild faster and will continue working with locals on the challenges people are facing – particularly where rebuilding in bushfire-prone areas when material and labour are in high demand.

Healthy future for farm program

Healthy Landscapes’ holistic grazing graduates at participant Sam White’s Sidonia Beef farm.

In the past 12 months, the program has delivered popular grass identification workshops, a holistic grazing course, a small property management course and many other events and webinars to more than 875 participants.

The program was recognised with a 2021 Premier’s Sustainability Award for its success in facilitating practice change on properties.

Healthy Landscapes is a collaboration between Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Hepburn Shire Council, City of Greater Bendigo, Melbourne Water, A Healthy Coliban Catchment project, and the Upper Campaspe Landcare Network.

All parties have committed in-kind and financial support for another two years.

The program supports farmers and rural land managers with regenerative agricultural training and advice.

The theme for this year's event is 'Realise the Possible' and the team behind this year's event has once again gone above and beyond to source an array of films that feature 'Real stories. Real issues. Real characters. Real conversations'.

Festival director Claire Jager said many of this year's films tackled the big, hefty ideas that consumed us and were told through the distinctive and intimate lens of each filmmaker's vision.

"True stories about people who create change, who are driven to rebel. They help us to see what is possible, telling us real stories with all the drama and complexity that we humans face," Jager said.

A fine example of this is Writing With Fire, which will screen on Saturday July 2 at 1.30pm and is a rousing documentary about tenacious grassroots reporting and galvanising resistance.

Armed with smartphones, a fearless group of trailblazing journalists from India's only women-led news outlet risk it all, including their own safety, to confront social injustice while fighting for marginalised voices in the world's largest democracy.

Chief reporter Meera and her journalists break traditions, be it on the frontlines of India's biggest issues or within the confines of their homes, redefining what it means to be powerful.

Born into an impoverished Dalit (‘low caste’) family and married at 14, Meera went against her conservative culture to study and become a journalist.

Meera leads her team of 28 semi-literate, professionally trained reporters, to transform the newspaper into a regional digital news force. As her team experiences its first taste of digital democracy, their video stories on corruption, violence against women, broken roads and inadequate public healthcare begin to become popular, unsettling bigger news agencies that are run by men. In the film, we see this journey – fraught with threats, danger, hope and sacrifice – through the eyes of our central protagonist Meera and her feisty protégé, Suneeta.

"It is the first time modern Dalit women will be seen on screen, not as victims of their circumstances but as writers of their own destiny," they said.

"India is a deeply complex country. For over 3000 years, we’ve had a social hierarchy in place that divides Indian society into four distinct groups of people, known as the caste system.

"Like racism, it is a system of exclusion but only worse, because caste is invisible.

"A person is considered a member of the caste they are born into and remains within that caste till their death, caste sticks to the deepest part of your being – your identity," the directors said.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion led by

moderator and long-time Castlemaine arts broadcaster Suzanne Donisthorpe. She will be joined by artist Tracey Naughton and lecturer and documentary practitioner Shweta Kishore.

Naughton's foundation interest is in textiles arts, public art and technology, specifically the content it carries, as a means of fostering democratic participation, communication and development.

Kishore lectures in Screen and Media at RMIT University and is a documentary practitioner and author of Indian Documentary Film and Filmmakers: Independence in Practice (2018). Shweta’s research focuses on Indian documentary, feminist film, and film festivals.

Sacred Heart College students at work planting native vegetation along the Little Coliban River.

Students from Kyneton's Sacred Heart College planted native vegetation along the Little Coliban River as part of their year 11 retreat in May. This partnership project with the Victorian Government’s 2021 Victorian Landcare Grant involves rehabilitation of native vegetation along riparian areas of the Little Coliban River.

The project allowed students an opportunity to volunteer in Tylden Landcare's community project along the Little Coliban at PGL during their retreat.

Along with planting 300 trees, shrubs, grasses and sedges, the students participated in a reintroduction program for a local rare species – Discaria pubescens or the Australian anchor plant.

Teacher Andrew Dunne said the students did a good job in the conditions.

“Participation in a landscape and river rehabilitation program such as this local one will help us to reduce our ecological footprint to more sustainable levels,” he said.

The North Central Catchment Management Authority has identified that only two per cent of the vegetation along the Little Coliban River is in good condition. This leaves 98 per cent of native vegetation in marginal to poor condition.

The primary objective of rehabilitation works is to improve the quality and extent of native vegetation along the river.

Weed invasion, lack of native vegetation and stock access have direct impacts on the water quality. This water flows to the Upper Coliban Reservoir and is town drinking water.

The area has been planted with indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses. Once established this vegetation will create a filter zone between the stream and its surrounding catchment area.

The plantings will provide many ecosystem services including the filtering of nutrients and will control streambank erosion inputs from reaching the reservoir.

Unworthy of support Janine Mc Dougall, Riddells Creek Once again, the Victorian Government’s Kangaroo Harvesting Program has proven it is unworthy of consumer support (‘Bad kills need to stop', Midland Express, June 7).

While the government refuses to monitor night shooting or mandate daylight surveillance of the land where shooting will take place, this cruelty to our native icon will continue unabated.

The government’s apparent preparedness to accept this trade off of ‘bad kills’ to further its aim of extending the kangaroo meat and skin market is out of step with 21st century best animal welfare practice and contemporary community expectations.

Consumer boycott of kangaroo meat (pet food and human) and skin products is the answer.

Best interests?

Peter, Macedon John Shaw wrote about the lack of integrity in business these days ('The rule of law? Opinions, June 7).

The rot started with Ian Narev from the Commonwealth Bank, which allegedly rorted millions from its loyal customers and he walked with 40 million. Some punishment!

What about our current politicians and their refusal to explain ‘the red shirts’ saga.

And spending a million or so stopping the ombudsman from investigating!

Heritage trees protected Gisborne’s Bunjil Creek Bridge may have been destroyed before heritage controls could be applied but the precinct’s trees will not suffer the same fate.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has moved to protect the remaining two oaks and one elm with a heritage overlay that was also intended for the bridge.

The 148-year-old bluestone bridge and channel was demolished for road improvements at the Melbourne and Kilmore Roads intersection in March.

Regional Roads Victoria dismantled the structure one month before it was found to meet heritage standards despite strong council and community opposition.

In April, a planning panel assessing the council’s request for the bridge’s heritage protection determined it "appropriate and

When young people are given opportunities, wonderful things can happen. This was highlighted recently when Year 11 students studying VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) hosted a large group of Grade 5 students from Kyneton Primary School to collaborate on a STEM Project.

A feature supplied by the students of Sacred Heart College showcasing all matters important to our younger generation

Each Monday over a four-week program, Work Related Skills (WRS) classes became abuzz with excitement as students partnered together to explore the world of electricity and gears by imagining, designing, creating and doing. Working progressively through a purpose designed module, Sacred Heart College VCAL students mentored their counterparts to learn how forces and energy can control movement, sound or light in a designed product.

Combining elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), race cars were created, impressive in their artistry and function. Of course, a race car needs a race track and the final week four session culminated in Race Day, where passion and competition was fierce, revealing the fastest car and its designers. “I’ll never forget this day” commented one of our Grade 5 guests, a sentiment echoed by the VCAL cohort.

Year 9 Paddock to Plate

Mock Interviews

Our Year 9 Paddock to Plate students were finally able to journey to Tuki Trout Farm to put a line in and chance their luck! Each year we take the Paddock to Plate students for an immersive treat to Tuki where Rod, the owner, takes the students for a farm tour, and gives them a first-hand experience of how a true Paddock to Plate farm works.

The students then go for a fish, catch a trout, prepare it for lunch, cook it, then eat it with freshly made bread and salad courtesy of the Tuki vegie gardens. As you can see from the photos below, a great day was had by all and the weather was sensational!

During the week of 23 – 27 May our Year 10 Semester One VCE Industry and Enterprise students undertook their Mock Interviews.

Students prepared applications, including a cover letter and resume, for a specific role.

The students met with an employer via Zoom for the ‘mock interview’.

The feedback from our employers was very positive, and many students commented how the experience gave them more insight and confidence to undertake an interview in the real world. This program is an excellent example of the real life learning that is provided at Sacred Heart College by our dedicated Careers Team.

We would like to thank our employers for their generous contribution of time and experience. Programs like this only run with the support from our wider school community. Well done to the Year 10 students on the way they presented themselves both in person and on paper.

Shave for a Cure

On Friday 20 May I organised the Shave for a Cure event at Sacred Heart.

I was passionate about this because when I was in Year 9 I made a deal with my mother that if I grew my hair I’d cut it in three or four years to fundraise money for the World’s Greatest Shave. Suffice to say it worked, and now we’ve raised nearly $4,000!

The Shave for a Cure was one of my projects for VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning).

There were many tasks to organise, some of which were organising a date and time, booking the location of the event, securing a hairdresser to shave our heads, applying for the day to be a casual clothes day for students, and organising other people who wanted to join in on the

shave.

It was a huge success that drew in a large crowd, and even Dr Egberts himself made an appearance, but didn’t shave his head! The day was great and we had a number of brave people who cut their hair.

A big thank you also to Ms Matricardi-Old for taking charge of the clippers. I would also like to thank Liam Cowburn, Kejsi Use the Schulz, Oscar Broadbent, Dylan Azzopardi, QR Code Marissa Fisher, Annette Fisher and Hunter if you Daw for cutting and shaving your heads would like for blood cancer. GOLF results Hynes, Campbell win tournament Mount Macedon’s Jim Hynes and Marty Campbell combined to win the 23rd annual Ian Davies Memorial event at Woodend Golf Club on Saturday.

They came in with 44 stableford points for 18 holes, two better than their nearest rivals, to clinch the feature event at the Woodend club’s winter tournament.

The Davies family is a very important part of the club’s history, and the drawcard event is special each year, this time being favoured with ideal weather conditions and many visiting players from near and far among the 60 who teed off.

Low-marker Hynes and Campbell showed a liking for the course, and were pleased to add their names to the winners of the event from past seasons.

Appreciation was expressed to the Davies family for sponsoring the event, to all who had contributed in any way, and to Mount Macedon Winery for its support.

Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson and Cr Mark Ridgeway were thanked for attending the presentation and showing a keen interest in the club’s future.

The Lions were determined to continue their form after a fantastic win over Maldon in round seven.

The home side made a great start, kicking three unanswered goals in the first term to four points and leaving the Redbacks shellshocked.

The visitors recovered in the second term, booting six goals to the Lions three and trailed by just four points at half-time.

An even third term followed as both sides grappled for ascendency. Carisbrook managed to peg through two more goals and the Lions one to see the Brook edge in front by two points at the final change.

The final term saw both sides throw everything they had into the contest, but in the end the Redbacks proved to be more accurate in front of goal kicking six goals to the Lions 3.4 to win by 16 points.

Final scores Harcourt 3.3, 7.4, 8.7, 11.11 (77) to Carisbrook 0.4, 6.6, 8.9, 14.9 (93).

Newstead made the trek to Hedges Oval to take on Royal Park and had a top day out recording a 49 point victory.

The Steaders opened with a four goal first term while holding the Tigers to just one goal.

The second quarter was more of an arm-wrestle with both sides kicking three goals each. But after half time the Roos upped the ante and went on to kick another 4.6 to two points to secure a comfortable win.

Castlemaine won four of its five netball matches against Kyneton on Saturday, but the Tigers still had reason to celebrate.

Kyneton B-graders broke through for their first win of the season, defeating the Magpies 43-36.

Miriam McIntyre’s standout defensive pressure led to turnovers, intercepts and rebounds aplenty. The Tigers showed increased composure down the entire court.

Goal umpires were kept extremely busy as Trentham’s two senior football teams kicked a combined 77 goals 35 behinds on Saturday.

On a perfect day for footy, the Saints travelled to Jubilee Oval and secured two percentage-boosting victories.

Maryborough Rovers kicked the first goal in the main game, with the Saints then indulging in a scoring spree against undermanned opposition.

Bombers pass the test Bill West Second-placed Riddell survived a testing encounter against Woodend-Hesket at Gilbert Gordon Oval on Saturday, and now face what coach Justin Belleville describes as “a massive challenge” against a visiting Wallan this weekend.

The Bombers were forced to work extremely hard to overcome the Hawks, who virtually had their season on the line, and fielded possibly their strongest side for the season.

In the end, Riddell had more run than their opposition, and drew away in the latter stages to win by 18 points.

It was one of the best contests for the season.

“The standard we set for ourselves sets us up,” a pleased Belleville said after the match.

Overall he was very pleased with the intent shown by the Bombers, and singled out mobile captain-ruckman Josh Grabham and Dylan Tarczon for their special efforts; he also praised young defender Jordan Riordan for stepping up the challenge against Hawks’ top liner Tom Gawthorp.

In contrast to Belleville, Hawks’ playing coach Josh Pound, who snapped the opening goal less than 30 seconds after the first bounce, said he was "sick of honourable losses".

The Hawks have a litany of missing out in close finishes this season, and the obviously frustrated coach questioned whether some players had put in the necessary

High drama

There was high drama at Gilbert Gordon Oval in Woodend on Saturday, as an injured Riddell player lay on the football ground awaiting an ambulance for over an hour.

Tended by trainers and medicos, Jordan Williamson – the youngest of three brothers playing for Riddell – was immobilised after colliding with another player during a marking duel during the third quarter of the reserves match.

The ambulance that eventually arrived and drove onto the ground had been responding to another local call when the urgent call was made after the football mishap.

After being thoroughly assessed by paramedics, Williamson was conveyed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Fears that he may have incurred any serious or permanent damage were dispelled, and severe whiplash was confirmed.

Much to the relief of family and friends, and the wider football community, he was allowed to return home on Saturday night.

The match could not resume due to the time that had elapsed, with Riddell, narrowly ahead, declared the winner.

Living, breathing footy …

Bill West On his own admission, Jimmy Hepburn is someone who has ‘lived and breathed football’ from a very young age.

“My highlights have been playing for the club I grew up loving, and making lifelong friendships,” he said on Saturday, after playing his 200th senior game for Woodend-Hesket.

A homegrown product, the skilled, quick and versatile utility player has been one of those loyal footballers country clubs just love to have around.

Before the match, he ran through a large banner at Gilbert Gordon Oval with a contingent of very young girls and boys decked out in the brown and gold of the Hawks; his daughter Ivy, 5, and son Indy, 3, were among what looked like a fan club following.

Wife Jess was among the cheerleaders, as the Hawks honoured one of their favourite sons.

After the high-pressure match against Riddell, Hepburn was chaired from the field, probably still reflecting on what might have

been until the home side faded late in the game.

“It’s a very even season … really anyone could end up winning it,” he said.

A shop fitter who travels to Melbourne, he had extreme doubts he would play at all this season after experiencing headaches in the lead-up months, possibly from an accumulation of knocks sustained on the field over the years. There is much more concussion awareness in sport today.

In recent weeks he said he had begun to feel 100 per cent again, and with Woodend-Hesket battling COVID and injury problems, decided he would pull on the boots again and help out.

“I remember when I was an eight-year-old, I began playing with the Woodend Under 10s," he said.

“Going down to the local ground was like I was going to the MCG, I just loved footy.”

Hepburn graduated through junior ranks with the Hawks, and has fond memories of being in the strong Woodend-Hesket Un-

In the seniors, premierships proved elusive, the closest he came was being in the 2008 preliminary final when still a teenager.

Having seen plenty of very talented players in the Hawks’ senior lineup, he rates present key position star Tom Gawthrop (another

local) as the best.

And maybe some of the youngsters who ran through the banner may end up being stars in the future.

With a grin, Hepburn predicted that Ivy (now female footy is booming) may be a real chance to make an impact.

Shock defeat for Gisborne

Seemingly cruising on top of the ladder, the previously unbeaten Gisborne senior footballers suffered a reality check at the Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday.

The Bulldogs had opened the season with a 10.12 to 6.10 win over Sandhurst; this time the rampant Dragons turned the tables with a stunning second half.

Gisborne led by a point at half-time and the match was up for grabs; no one could have predicted what was to eventuate in the second half.

The Dragons lifted all over the ground, monopolising the ball and scoring eight unanswered goals at one stage.

Outside the top five, Sandhurst was desperate for a win and the 37-point victory revived the Dragons’ finals hopes.

For Gisborne, despite being below full strength – prime

mover Brad Bernacki was a big ‘out’ – the defeat may be a blessing in disguise.

It takes away the chatter about going through the season unbeaten, and coach Rob Waters and the hierarchy at the club realise this loss may well be just a very temporary hiccup.

In the second half, Sandhurst outscored Gisborne by kicking 11.4 to a meagre 3.2.

It was a performance that other top sides may well study as they try and find a way to find a chink in Gisborne’s armour in the second half of the season.

The Bulldogs will certainly be looking forward to playing Kyneton at Gardiner Reserve on Saturday. It is a Pride Round match for the ‘Dogs.

Pride Cup to Magpies The winner of the Pride Round Cup between Kyneton and Castlemaine football netball clubs went down to the ninth match – women’s senior football – on Saturday.

Locked at four wins each, the outcome was decided when the Magpies romped home by 89 points under lights in the women’s footy at the Kyneton Showgrounds.

The Cup was initially won by the Kyneton club in 2019., and also played host to special guest umpire Di Phyland, who passed an incredible 1500 games.

“We can’t wait until the next Pride Cup and are proud to be supporting diversity and inclusion in sport within our region,” a Magpies’ official said, with the Tigers echoing this sentiment.

Coming off a victory over Bendigo Thunder, the Castlemaine Magpies showed their class by defeating the Tigers 14.12 (96) to 1.1 (7).

It was a hard contest in muddy conditions.

Kyneton’s Heidi Erasmus reached her 50 career game milestone earlier this year.

After the match, the Magpies’ Tia Davidge was pleased to accept the Pride Round medallion; Bee Hately was chosen as best on ground for the Tigers. Davidge was also best against Thunder a week earlier.

Shannon Prendergast was the sole goalkicker for the Tigers, and the six special awards for individual Tigers went to Shannon White, Maddy Stott, Nikita Jamson, Jordan Savioa, Natalie Korinfsky and Neve Brissenden.

Kyneton senior footballers turned on a clinical display to overwhelm Castlemaine by 126 points on Saturday.

The sixth win in a row was highlighted by nine goals from the irrepressible Rhys Magin, and six from Guy Dickson in the Pride Round encounter at the Showgrounds.

Kyneton’s victory sets up a blockbuster against ladder-leader Gisborne at Gardiner Reserve this Saturday – the Bulldogs suffering their first defeat for the season against Sandhurst at the Queen Elizabeth Oval.

On April 9, in the first round of the season, the Tigers defeated Castlemaine 18.15 to 7.6 at Camp Reserve, and they had every intent of gaining a percentage booster again on Saturday.

The Magpies fought hard but did not have the firepower to seriously challenge the Tigers on a fine, sunny day with the home crowd in full voice.

Tony Horne and Declan Slingo were great contributors for the visitors, who went to the half-time break 50 points in arrears.
